Natural Cures Using Cinnamon and Honey

The combination of cinnamon and honey has long been not only a tasty favorite but a trusted home remedy for a large number of ailments going back to Ayurvedic medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The antiseptic and protective attributes of each ingredient are well-respected, and science is continually uncovering anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and other additional benefits from each of them. However, combining honey and cinnamon together seems to enhance their value as natural remedies beyond what they can do alone.

Caution: Not all cinnamons are made equal. The most common form of cinnamon contains relatively high levels of coumarin, a chemical that can cause liver damage over long-term usage. Please see these posts.

If you are going to use Cinnamon, make sure it is pure Ceylon Cinnamon, and not Cassia which contains 5 % Coumarin, a toxin that is very harmful to the liver and kidneys. Ceylon Cinnamon only has .05% Coumarin. The Cinnamon you purchase in the stores or Supermarkets has little or no curative properties... I had to send away to Sri Lanka to get the TRUE CINNAMON Good Health...

The better way to avoid Coumarin is select only cinnamon from Ceylon. As I know the 'Coumarin' in cinnamon only from Cinnamomum cassia Presl Spicy =Lauraceae(Cortex Cinnamomi) Cassia Bark (The State Pharmacopoeia Commission of P. R. China. I read all your remedies using a teaspoon or more of cinnamon a day, but then when I did an internet search, I found all sorts of wanrnings about long-term usage of cinnamon. There can be a real danger of liver damage. Here is one link I found, but you can do a simple Google search yourselves.

I think you should post this warning on top of all the posts indicating large daily intake of cinnamon powder. Thanks.

wow, thanks Leah...a constant dilemma for us omnivores...what is and isn't safe to eat. according to this, ceylon has much less coumarin compared to cassia.

I'm responding to Leah from NY's post with the link attached describing the danger of cinnamon. I read it but it doesn't give enough information to figure out what is a safe or dangerous amount. They give measurements of milligrams and we use measurements of teaspoons. It is impossible to convert their milligrams into our teaspoons because they are using a weight measurement and we are using a volume measurement. much cinnamon is a safe amount? We can't tell by the article you submitted. Therefore we need to find another source with American measurements to help us. Get searching people! FYI...according to the article the liver damage is temporary. You may suffer some jaundice which will clear in a matter of weeks and it only happens to some people, not all according to the article.

No reason to FEAR THE Cinnamon and Honey cholesteral Cure,

Leah must work for Lipitor to scare everyone back to statins which can really kick the wazooo out of your liver, but its ok to take so says the rubber stamp FDA.

Cassia Cinnamon is a close relative to Real Cinnamon which is native to Ceylon.Cassia Cinnamon is also called Saigon Cinnamon or Chinese Cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon contains COUMARIN which is the problem for the liver. Real cinnimon from Ceylon has only .0004%coumarin. The zeros to the right of the decimal point indicate an extremely small level or one heck of an intake of cinnamon before worrying about liver problems.

Saigon cinnamon on the other hand contains 5% COUMARIN this is alot and is not good and this form of cinnamon should not be used for this formulation. Go figure this is the cinnamon all the big bakers use. Why? Cheaper. So if your eating a lot of cinnabuns you pounding your liver as well as your cholesteral.

So the formula would appear to be safe as long as you use real cinnimon from Ceylon. Lets get started lowering cholesterol with out the use of statin drugs listen to the disclaimers in the ads. They tell you what their going to give you along with your cure in a pill.

FYI about volume measurement: A teaspoon of cinnamon is alomost exactly 3 grams equivalent. Also, I read a wellness letter in 2005 that with only a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, they observed total cholesterol numbers drop from 18 to 30 points in a 30 day period.

Thanks for clarifying this subject, I had never heard of coumarin. Now I understand the dangers of cinnamon but the mini-beet protocol included taking cinnamon on a daily basis... I have tried the second protocol and I have to say that no matter how good it maybe for you I didn't like it. I don't like taking the same juice every day and I didn't like the cinamon either, it tastes awful. I will try to include more beet juice in my diet as well as asparagus, celery and fennel but not every day and not together. We do a lot for our health but... it has to stay a bit of fun otherwise we give it up! I still don't understand about the lower cholesterol.

I just wanted to add my two cents about the cinnamon during the mini beet protocol. Besides containing coumarins (and the amount is dependent on which type of cinnamon you're using), cinnamon helps to regulate blood sugar levels. So, when Robert advises you to start the cinnamon about 15 minutes before drinking the beet juice, he is trying to help you control the blood sugar and insulin response your body will have when drinking a juice made from beets. Beets, as everyone knows, are root vegetables and root veggies have a high sugar content (think potatoes, carrots, etc.) Then, by eating the carrots and apples immediately afterwards, you won't feel the detox effects as much because the fiber from the carrots and apples helps to eleviate and slow down that insulin response once more. So cinnamon plus fiber equals less blood sugar side effects from drinking the highly concentrated (but very effective and powerful) attributes of the beets. Please don't be afraid of cinnamon!

Here is what I found on Wikipedia regarding the toxicity of *Cassia*. As you can see, the most popular type, CINNOMUM BURMANII. which I get in bulk from Starwest Botanicals, is very low in essential oils, and therefore you should not worry about this liver damage scare:

innamomum burmannii, also known as Indonesian Cinnamon, Padang Cassia, or Korintje, is one of several plants in the genus Cinnamomum whose bark are sold as the spice cinnamon[1]. The spice is the least expensive of the three common forms of cinnamon as it has the lowest essential oil content. The most common and cheapest type of cinnamon in the US is made from powdered Cinnamomum burmannii. As a result of the low oil content, Cinnamomum burmannii may have less of the mildly toxic substance coumarin than does C. cassia[2].

Yes only use Cinnamon from Srilanka. The Cinnamon from the Philippines has the stuff that does the liver damage. Ok in small amounts but not good in large amounts.

Hi Charlie, be careful with too much carrot juice as well, they seem to help develop certain forms of cancer, at least that is what I read..... One almost comes to the conclusion that everything is bad for you! Maybe the truth is that everything in moderation is good for you and also food that is properly grown, not the type full of chemicals!


That's insane about carrot juice causing cancer..IT CURES CANCER..I KNOW a person who cured himself of cancer by drinking carrot juice only for one month and was cured..

Carrot juice does not cause cancer. Read of a lady who cured her lung cancer by drinking carrot juice only for like a month. Whenever you see claims like that you have to use common sense and also search for actual scientific studies and then analyze the study. Many studies these days are sponsored by big Pharma and set up incorrectly on purpose. For instance, you could have a study done with carrots that were not organically grown, that were filled with pesticides. Would you get bad results? Of course you would but the real cause wouldn't be the carrots but the toxins introduced into the carrots through pesticides.

Francisca, where did you read that carrot juice helps develop cancer? There are several alternative medicine treatments that use carrot juice as part of their protocol to treat and even cure cancer. Gerson Therapy is one that comes to mind

Be careful with using the phrase "everything in moderation is good for you". Doctors recommended moderate cigarette smoking in the 1930's for people with anxiety issues.

Oh my, Jay..... You know very well what I meant! Which is, that whatever you eat, drink, has to be in moderation or else it might still hurt you! Common sense, really.... Therefore it is sensible to eat a variaty of foods, not only focus on one or two that might indeed be very good for you but they cease to be if you eat them the whole time! Actually.... why am I even explaining this? Who talked about smoking? Come on....

Sorry I don't remember where I read about the carrot juice but I did a short while ago. No one is saying that you shouldn't drink it ever but the thing is maybe be careful with the amount! Anyway, my approach nowadays is exactly as I said: Everything can be good for you or bad for you depending on the approach (and no, I don't mean smoking, as I don't mean taking any kind of poison, or toxic chemicals.... sorry but no, I don't mean that! ).

Anyway, try drinking too much carrot juice and you will turn orange! Years ago a man died doing exactly that, far too much carrot juice!

There was a recent fad of taking whole spoonfulls of cinnamon powder. THAT will damage your liver and cause problems. Taking a teaspoon at a time in some water or ACV should not cause those problems. While there may be some truth in a quality difference in cinnamon being from different places in the world, the warnings on the internet are from when a lot of kids got sick/ER etc from eating gobs of cinnamon dry and undiluted. Look up "cinnamon challenge" on any news site and it will probably have an article from earlier this year on it. That is why there are cinnamon warnings, not from people using it holistically.

osteoarthritis -- I am 65 and am just beginning to have some pain in one knee. Since cinnamon doesn't disolve, would the honey and cinnamon be just as effective on oatmeal or toast?

Cinnamon/raw honey has done for my whole body I have been only taking it for 2 months and my skin complexion has improve, my hair is fuller, I very active now. I get it from vita cost its already made and the price is very reasonable that I brought 4 jars at once sometime I spread it on my toast in the morning and the kids love it instead of pnj they rather have cinna/honey plus its good for them its all natural.

Raw honey is honey that unheated, unpasteurized and unprocessed. Its consistency is much thicker than processed honey. (It doesn't pour from its container - you have to spoon it out.)

Regarding whether or not you could heat it - you could, but it would lose most of its nutrients and living enzymes, which rather defeats the purpose of buying raw honey vs. Processed honey in the first place, right? :)

This is a remedy I have seen other people use around me in India for arthritis. I teaspoon of ground cinnamon powder, mixed with 1 teaspoon pure, organic honey. Take it in the morning before you eat anything. And do not eat/drink anything for 30 minutes after. Drinking water is fine. You should see effect within a week, if not within days.

What about eating organic ceylon cinnamon mixed with organic raw honey? I just got mine today and mixed it together (1 tbsp honey, 1 tsp cinnamon) and ate it just by itself mixed together. Is it ok to eat it like this everyday?

I went to the doctor and they xray my knee and told me i had to have surgery because of osteoarthris. I heard about the honey and cinnamon for arthritis and thought i would try it. I drank it morning and night for 3 weeks and my pain was gone and i have more energy also. I have told many people about it and they are trying it too.

To Estel from Wheelersburg, Oh. Yea! I commend you on your wisdom for not going under the knife for knee pain. Your way of treating the problem is much cheaper, much less painful, and much more effective & longer lasting, as well as not creating more damaged tissue from surgery. For future reference you might also remember that MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is very good for joint pains and few, if any side effects, as our bodies require some of it to function.

Can anybody tell me what is better for hip joint pain and knee pain, asv and honny or cinnamun and honny. Right now I have been eating oat meal for breckfest with about 4 tbls of honny, I have not taken any pain medication for a long time for this problem.

1st I tried BSM remedy for a knee issue but I needed surgery for it. Arthritis was found in right knee and now is in left knee. For a week and some I have been doing the honey-cinn and I positively feel the difference. I have not taken any prescribed meds. for a week. I add 2 teaspoons honey and 1 teaspoon cinnamon and add this to a cup very hot water. I drink this morning and nite. I also love the fact that it benefits me in other ways. Hope this helps someone else.

For debilitating osteoarthritis where bilateral hip surgery is scheduled & the only "apparent" answer according to mainstream...

I am on my second dose of honey cinnamon right now. I did not need my crutches when I got up in the middle of the night -- bathroom break awoke me not pain.

Made another cup & will report back. I hope this helps someone else with joint pain.

Hi there,

I understand that the use of cinnamon before the taking of the beet juice will have a postive impact on the blood sugar impact of the beets as they are very sweet. Cinnamon is a known reducer of the glycaemic index of a meal.

At 4gms a meal i.e. 1 1/2 teaspsoons, it can reduce not only blood glucose but aslo LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

However it is a VERY POTENT blood thinner and some cinnamon in Europe carries warnings because of this.

I have read that one shouldn't exceed more than 1 1/2 teasps a day because of the blood thinning issues and the Beet protocol requires more than this.

Has anyone any thoughts or experience with this? I think it's very important for those on blood thinning meds.

I have a question instead of a remedy? I had nasal septoplasty and turbinate reduction in Oct. 2008. Still having some trouble with congestion and doctor says I have GERD now. Which is a type of reflux. I have been on Previcid for 2 months and even though I do not feel I have reflux he says I need to take pills two times a day instead of one. How does honey and cinnamon work with breathing issues? I always thought honey worked against asthma. I do not have asthma but how would honey and cinnamon affect this? Thanks

Have you tried apple cider vinegar for your gerd. Worked for me. I/2 teaspoon as required (or whenever your gut is really burning) which is usually twice a day and only for a short period of a few days

Which is more beneficial to take everyday? Cinnamon and Honey or Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda. Can these ingredients be put together for a cure all potion? lol I have Asthma, achy joints and high triglycerides. The 2 drinks both sound beneficial.

I use cinnamon (Chinese) and honey in a natural medicine protocol to treat high Blood pressure and High cholesterol level. It is part of a 35 day detox prog and I have a one hundred percent success rate. At the end of the period, every patient treated has been within the stated NORMAL levels. This includes blood sugar also. But I use Chinese cinnamon and only this.... as I was recommend to me by a former herbalist from Malaysia.

As mentioned above, the Chinese (Cassia) cinnamon may create health problems in longer use. But, some cross arguments are there.

Cassia contains 1200 times more coumarin than Ceylon cinnamon. It means Ceylon cinnamon is 1200 more times safer than Cassia cinnamon.

There is no danger in cinnamon! I am beyond convinced that it has extremely curative properties. My husband is a type 2 diabetic. His doctor initially prescribed Metformin for him to take, but we couldn't afford the co-pay ($300!! ), so he felt compelled to seek out a more natural, alternative method to lowering his blood sugar. He began taking organic Ceylon cinnamon along with a bit of a change in diet this week. His fasting blood sugar Monday, April 20,2015 was about 358. Today, which is Friday, April 24,2015, his fasting blood sugar was down to 236! Yes, there is still room for improvement, but that's a whopping 122-point drop within 4-5 days! POW! Cinnamon works! I will be trying the cinnamon-honey one-two combo for my issues with UTI. I'll let ya know how well it works for me!

* It is found that a mixture of honey and cinnamon cures most diseases.
* Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a 'Ram Ban' (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases.
* Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.
* Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients.
* In addition to that, Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, on its issue dated 17 January, 1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

Also those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder and three cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increases and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

Is it true that cinnamon may cause damage to the liver? How much cinnamon can I take per day that won't be harmful. Is it safe for children? Please tell me.

1 jambul fruit and seed.
2 fennel water,[not the seed].
3 spinach.
4 fresh figs.
5 barley flour. make soup, porridge or bread from it, [this item has many other great health benefits]. when using these items please remember to thank god so that you can also obtain his blessings.

EC: We wish people would name their sources when they send us emails! In the case of cinnamon and honey, these remedies are duplicated on hundreds of websites... it's difficult to tell where the material originated from.

the source of that article is the venerable Weekly World News, that paragon of truthful reporting and Supermarket Wisdom. Is it true? You'd think stories such as "Fountain of Vermouth Discovered' and "Alien Bible Translated' would be a bit of a giveaway. That is not to say that it is false, I am sure that some of the things may be true, there is just no evidence for it.

I would tend to be wary! I took the Cinnamon Honey cure for a UTI. I have a strong stomach, and can tolerate just about anything. But apparently two tablespoons of cinnamon was too much. I immediately felt nauseous, and vomited about 45 min. later. I don't doubt that there are some curative affects of cinnamon and honey. But even trying to swallow two tablespoons of cinnamon in water is enough to make you sick.

Reply to Robin of Rural, VA.: The amount of cinnamon you took (2 tablespoons) seems to be a lot more than all the others as seen in the other letters and suggestions. Most of them only take 1 or 2 teaspoons of cinnamon with double the amount of honey. Less is probably better. Maybe that amount you took is good for inducing vomiting! Marinah.

That the cinnamon and honey cure was supposedly first published in the Weekly World News doesn't mean that the cure does not work. While the WWN does print lots of obviously fabricated stories, it's not going to risk massive lawsuits by knowingly publishing a natural remedy (or alleged natural remedy) that could harm its readers or make them nauseous.

Here's what "Prescription for Nutritional Healing", Third ed. has to say about cinnamon:

"Relieves diarrhea and nausea; counteracts congestion; aids peripheral circulation. Warms the body and enhances digestion, especially the metabolism of fats. Also fights fungal infection. Useful for diabetes, weight loss, yeast infection, and uterine hemorrhaging."

Hi, I used a honey and cinnamon remedy that I heard about from my friend. If you use about a table spoon of raw honey in a cup of warm water (hot will kill the enzymes) and some cinnamon (I don't know exactly how much to use, I just use a couple shakes from the shaker)
It speeds up your metabolism, I've lost a little weight, I have yet to weigh myself, but I can already tell, so I suggest trying it.

Would there be any reason why one could not make a larger amount of the cinnamon "tea" (put the cinnamon in boiling water, allow to cool, add raw honey), and keep in in the fridge for several days, and take 1/2 cup every morning and evening? This instead of having to make it every day. It would save time. The proportions, I understand, are 1/2 teas. cinnamon and 1 teas. raw honey to 8 oz. water.

Also, I read some posts about it being damaging to the liver. Would 1/2 teas. cinnamon a day be damaging? Thank you.

Does the cinnamon need to be made into a tea, or can it just be mixed with honey (1/4 t. cinnamon and 1/2 t. honey) and chased by an 4 oz glass of water? Thank you.

Does The Cinnamon and raw honey have to be separate.. They have some that has RAW Honey and Cinnamon mix in 1 jar do you think it will do the same job on making weight lost?

Honey/cinnamon weight loss remedy really works, but there are a few things that need cleared up. I have read so many posts about "cinnamon" causing liver damage. Just to be clear, the normal "cinnamon" people have in their kitchen cupboards is NOT true cinnamon, it is from the Cassia plant, which contains coumarin, which IS toxic to the liver if taken daily in larger amounts than normal. (baking with it occasionally won't hurt you. ) The true cinnamon is CEYLON Cinnamon. It will not damage the liver. It can be found in health stores or I have found it on Amazon. True cinnamon is what you want for the honey cinnamon cures. It has an amazing flavor too, you won't want the other kind after you have tasted it! Also be sure you don't pour BOILING water over your honey/cinnamon as the heat will destroy the benefits of the raw honey. Warm to medium hot water is better. If you find you don't have time to make this, you can make a large batch of the honey/cinnamon/water and keep in a pitcher in fridge, drinking it cold is fine also.

Because our blood needs to maintain its ability to coagulate in times of injury, excessive intake of coumarins over a prolonged period of time can pose health risks. While the level of naturally occurring coumarins in Ceylon cinnamon appears to be very small and lower than the amount that could cause health risks, the level of naturally occurring coumarins in the cassia cinnamons appears to be higher and may pose a risk to some individuals if consumed in substantial amounts on a regular basis. For this reason, organizations like the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin, Germany have recommended that large amounts of the cassia cinnamons be avoided."


NOTE: Although cassia (grocery store cinnamon) has more blood thinning coumarin in it, true cinnamon (Ceylon) also contains very small amounts of coumarin. Just to be safe, you might want to discontinue the use of both kinds of cinnamons, if you are taking it regularly, if you have surgery or dental work coming up, or if you are on blood thinning medications.
