Home Remedies for Dogs with Mange

I am a 66 year old senior with an 11 year old dog. We are both a couple of old dogs. I just used a home remedy of Apple Cider Vinegar & mayonaise on the hot spots on my dog & (mange) his itiching seemed to go away immediately. I then put the ACV in a spray bottle with water and a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide and sprayed the carpet and his bedding. I gave my dog a bath and shampooed the carpet. I put 2 tablespoons of ACV in his food and he licked his bowl clean. took him to the park and dabbed mayonaise(2 tablespoons-suffocates the Mites)on his chest where the red spots were and the itiching and then brought him home and gave him a good bath. I washed his bedding and then sprayed it with ACV, water, H202. I have not heard him scratching since. Lou

I was reading that you can help with the mange with MSM-that comes in milk -can you give a dog milk -my vet said no

Hello my name is Koron from Jefferson Oregon. I have a Golden Retriever named Benjamin. He got red bumps and flaky skin on the back of his legs, and at the base of his front legs. He was scratching it raw creating sores that would scab over and create black and gray flakes. I thought it was an allergic reaction to fleas, so I treated him with a liquid flea chemical that you drip down their back. It did not change, and I never saw any fleas, so I looked up his symptoms and decided it could be mites (mange). I found your website and tried the Borax and white vinegar treatment. I followed the directions I read. I used about 2 1/2 tablespoons borax per cup of vinegar, mixed it in a blender, and used a spray bottle to soak his whole body with it and then just let him drip dry. I've been treating him (almost every day) for a couple weeks, and it is ALL GONE except a few little red bumps in his front arm pits. Do dogs have arm pits? :) Thank you very much for your help! AWESOME website! I can't believe how great it worked! I spent about $3.00 on a box of borax, and $1.67 each for three 32oz. jugs of white vinegar. I still have over half of the borax and vinegar left, and he is not scratching anymore, and is pretty much cured. I almost took him to the vet, and I almost spent a lot of money on brand name mange treatments. You guys saved me a lot of money and headaches. Thank you very much.

Chronic Mange

I have been reading Ted's remedy for mange and I would like to contribute with some more information.
I have been treating an abandoned dog for over 6 years now due to demodesic mange. He didn't have a permanent home, so I had trouble in keeping the medical routines. Now I brought it to my house decided to finish with his disease. I've been shooting him with Ivermectin and bathing with Amitraz for long time, though I have stopped in some periods when he got better or when he was too infested to take the baths.
Finally, I decided to try with homeopathy and wrote to some vets and got some directions.
- I started giving him Sulphur & Psorinum everyday (20 little globules of each diluted in milk, yougurt or water) on empty stomach. Can feed him after 20 minutes.
- Daily massages with Almond Oil mixed with drops of Lavender Oil. 5 drops of Pure Lavender Oil in 30 cc of Almond oil. He loves the massages.
- A weekly bath with a shampoo of peroxide that my vet says it can be prepared by the pharmacy, and it's cheaper than buying it ready with a brand name. Basically, the shampoo has to have an ingredient able to get rid of the excess of serum of the hair follicles which is the main food of the demodex mite. (In the dictionary is called follicle mite: any of several minute mites of the genus Demodex that are parasitic in the hair follicles).

- I give him Omega3 in capsules every day or two, I gave him Echinacea (1/2 capsule) for 7 days, to reinforce his inmune system.
- I apply Omega3 Pet oil (two puffs) in his daily food.

He had big and smelly pimples that made awful bleeding after he scratched them. Researching about mange, I discovered that Mange itself it is not smelly. Bad smell is not because of Mange, but definitelly because some oportunistic bacteria has started living in the wounds produced by so much scratching. Those pimples are infections that produce the bad smell and have to be treated with ANTIBIOTICS. I found out this now, and I was so surprised that none of the vets that saw this dog ever told me of this. Finally, one vet mention this important fact so she prescribed an antibiotic that had to be taken for at least 7 days,every 8 hours. CEFADROXILO is the name of this antibiotic in this country. It contains every 5ml, 250 mg of Cefadroxilo Anhidro (as a monohidrate). It comes in powder and has to be mixed with water. One bottle of preparation lasted only 5 days, so I gave him 2 bottles =10 days. The smell dissapeared 99% and also the pimples and now he looks much healthier, doesn't scratch and his hair is growing little by little. He still has some black spots and some red areas but no open wounds, no pimples, no smell, besides the normal dog smell.Finally, researching on the properties of the Aloe Vera plant, I discovered that one of the properties of the aloe gel is that it can help tremendously in the serum control of the hair, so I started to rub the black spot areas of his skin with this, and it seems to be working fine, cause besides hydrating the area, it is a powerful antiseptic.

Now that he doesn't have any wounds, I will start with the Sodium Perborate & Hydrogen Peroxide treatment.
I will also try the tip of putting 1/8 teaspoon of Sodium Perborate/Borax in the drinking water.

With all the years I have been treating dogs with mange, I came to realize that in order to definitely finish with it, you have to give the dog all the time necessary for the cure of this disease, cause the almost full time treatment requires all the patience you can have. It is needed a big amount of love for animals in the main place.

Red Mange

I have discovered a treatment for red mange that works miracles! After only three hours the large strawberry like splotches turned dark brown. The red rash (about 60% of the dogs skin)turned light brown. The bloody places on her tail stopped bleeding and began drying up. Best of all she stopped scratching.

After three days her skin was smooth with a light rose tint. Ten days later you can still see the white skin through the short hair that is growing fast.

Here's how: Pore a 24 0z. bottle of any sugar base syrup into a large pot and bring it to a boil for three minutes. Add four heaping table spoon fulls of Arm & Hammer baking soda. Be CAREFUL,If your pot is not big enough (about 8 qts.)it will boil over! After a few minutes it will start to thicken. Add enough tap water to thin it to it's original syrup texture. Done properly it will not separate. I used a 2 inch paint brush to coat the affected areas. Next day it didn't look like it was needed but I painted her again. Also gave her a half cup to eat. Those little critters love sugar but the bicarbonate wipes them out. I got the idea when I googled breast cancer.

They said maple syrup but I figured any sugar syrup would do. After cooking the syrup will be dark amber.

My new dog Beulah, no longer abandoned and homeless looks great. I do hope this works as well for others as it has for Beulah and I. It cost almost $4.00

i have been giving my 9 year old german shepherd yeast tablets for just under two weeks and it is working his fur is returning n not scratching as much now this realy works thanks

Ted, or anyone else, have any of you tried food grade diatomacious earth (DE)? It sure SEEMS to dry everything up fast, including MY white heads, dogs white heads, dogs' black heads (which came pooping out themselves, to be combed out easily with a flea comb) much else. It seems to be so effective at drying out shells/bodies of insects (fleas etc) and so safe, it made me try to use it as a dusting powder on the dog at the site of demodex infection. It certainly SEEMED to work.

I was so pleased (this before Dx with demodex). The vet thought TOO drying and told me to stop as antibiotics were started. My little old shih tzu girl became worse and worse.

When I restarted, (after visiting dog dermatologist who also said not to use, and AFTER things were looking really bad again) once again it all seemed to calm right down.

I also contacted a holistic vet who endorsed it on the site that I purchased the product from and she said it could be used as a cure for generalized demodex, but that I had to purchase her "package" ($125) for her further help.

Somehow, that seemed funny to me--my experience is vets who have answers try to give out that info as much as possible. Am I overly suspicious?

hi to all just an update i have been showering marshal now for 8 days using the shampoo n conditioner and once he has dried of applying vegatble oil all over him and giving him brewers yeast tablets from health food shop twice a day for the past 4 days it seem this combination of products is working very well indeed his fur is growing back very fast as i explaind in my previous note he is 9 years old and had near 90% fur loss nothing would clear this up for many years till now im quite confidant that this method will work 100% thanks to all who have posted there remedies ezz n marshel

I have a pet male dog that is 10 years old, he is a half-breed pit bull. Pongo began biting his back area just above his tail one day and I would wash and treat the area with over-the- counter medication for dogs. But commercial products would not work. Eventually the area became so troublesome that I would find the hair on his backside wet and with some blood on it where Pongo bit the area with his teeth as the itching was so unbearable. It hurt me to see my dog suffering so much.

This is what worked for Pongo:

1. I would wash the itchy area with soap and water (Pongo felt happy with the soap wash) I washed the area with ordinary bath soap (Dove), then I would rinse the infected area with a solution of water and vinegar (half water and half vinegar! BE SURE TO RINSE OFF ALL THE SOAP!

I did this routine daily (once a day) and eventually the mange completely healed. It has never returned!

hi i have a 9 year old german shepherd dog he has sufferd with mange n has near 90% hair loss i have tried to cure this but in the last two days i have washed him with human shampoo n conditioner herbal essences then applied plain old veg oil to his skin which is now far less red n sore he is itching less too will keep treating this way every two or three days for two week if i have success i will post to let you now wish me n marshel luck this q n a site is great yours hopefully ezz.

Sarcoptic Mange & Allergy, Lime-Sulphur Dip

One of my two dogs (Rex) has got Sarcoptic Mange and has probably infected the other one by now. Unfortunately Rex is allergic to both Ivermectin and Amitraz. We live in Malawi and those are the only drugs available. I have now been able to get a lime-sulphur dip but it is for plants. The active ingredient is polysulphide sulphur 320g/l. Can I use that? If so, how should I dilute it? If not: what can I do?

The other dog, (Pumpkin) apart from having been infected with the mange, is allergic to I don't know what. We suspect it is something in the garden. (The dogs stay outside.) She has wounds on her paws from chewing and red spots, like pimples on the soft part of her belly. The vet here recommended cortisone in low dosage given daily and ongoing. The other vet here suggested anti-histamines. On top of that we have been washing the paws regularly and applied antiseptic cream but none of this really works. I am not happy about that as I think she can't be on pills forever. I have now heard about homeopathic drops that might help but don't have a name. Do you know about these? Or do you have any other suggestions? Please help, my dogs are in really bad shape! Thanks a lot

Do you know what kind of mange your dogs had? My 1.2 lb Chihuahua Puppy has demodectic (sp?) mange over most of her body. She's missing a lot of hair and has scaly scabs all over. We've been using Ted's remedy, but she's so small and it's so cold here right now that she's caught a cold (kennel cough, we think). I really don't want to keep her cold and wet to wait for the Borax treatment to work and am hoping that Nu-Stock will work for her so she can be mite-and-cold-free! Thanks!

Used this and gone in three days !!!

That is what I am using right now, hydrogen peroxide shampoo left on for 10 mins, with no effect. I am gonna try something stronger this time.

We have a 12 year old chow/mix, 70 lbs. She was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent chemo treatment for 7 weeks at an vet oncologist. Her cancer is in remission; however, chemo treatment not only kills the cancer cells, her white blood cells were also destroyed. What this means is her immune system is not working. As a result, she developed Demodecosis (Demodex, Mite) and she has an ulcerated wound on her small claws. She looked like a victim of the black plague. The area around her eyes, muzzle, and all four paws turned hairless and black in color. Her mange is almost gone because of antibiotics and Ivermectin. There are only a few spots left and I read about using Desitin, the diaper rash ointment. It works wonders and kills the mites. In a couple of days, those spots have her fur growing back. Just another over the counter remedy. She is back to normal and no more Ivermectin.

WHERE DO YOU BUY THE PYRETHRIN?

After adopting a very sick cat from SPCA, he had ear mites, mange, ring worm. I first tried the borax mixture that I found on here, saw a little improvement but not much. Tried olive oil in the ears, was very soothing but didn't seem to do much.

Then I tried one capful of natural apple cider vinegar to a cup of water. I took a cotton ball, dipped it in the mixture, rang it out good. Then cleaned his ears with a slightly moist cotton ball. Within a couple of days I saw a big difference in his ear grime.

So then I thought I would try it for the mange and ring worm, I took the mixture, and soaked his ear good. I also wet the areas where there was the most flakiness and crusty flakes. Again within a week, big improvement! I highly recommend anyone to try this, but for him I couldn't use full strength. Just the smell made him puke on the spot.

One capful is all you need to one cup tepid water, it worked so well. I imagine you could also use it in a spray bottle and spray around the house, wherever he hangs out. They also liked me, so I used full strength on myself for ring worm and mange mites.

cat mange cure

I brought home a cat with mange and tried everything. I could not find Borax here in Brooklyn, but I came up with a remedy that worked, I mixed

1 oz. apricot kernel oil
1/2 oz. castor oil
2 dropperfuls Neem oil
2 dropperfuls Oregano oil

I applied it whenever I saw the cat scratching to the area being scratched. Took a week or two to get it all. Also important to vacuum bedding and I sprayed that with rubbing alcohol mixed with 10 drops Peppermint essential oil and 10 drops Thyme essential oil.

Mange Remedies:

Cooking Oil- The cooking oil will smother the egg mites. This will kill them before they hatch.

Tea Tree Oil- The Tea Tree Oil with stop the irritation and it will soften the skin stopping the itching. It will also smother the mites because they hate the smell.

Mange

I am in rescue & with 8-9 dogs most of the time I run into all kinds of problems. I have had serious side effects from meds so- I have mostly gone natural.

My Benji got ringworm 4 years ago & then mange & bacteria infection. Got rid of the RW but for 4 years the mange & bacteria has come & gone every few month. Yes I tried the borax 7etc & it works but he kept getting it back. Finally I insisted on an allergy test.The vet said no way is that the problem but i INSISTED!!!!!!
Sure enough he had lots of allergies & mostly foods. I had him on a really good holistic dog food. BUT His allergies were beef-fish-barley oats- potatoes - sweet potatoes- lamb - grass- dust mites to name a few.

I immediately changed foods. He now gets chicken & rice only - no perservatives & no treats unless they are chicken. Guess what he has been great for 6 months - back to his old self. Yes he has scars & always will as he had it so bad he bleed all the time from the sores. But this was the culprit. So if you have skin problems check for allergies - ivemectin & antibotics for 4 years without stop. That's not good.

I also sprayed him with collidal silver & it also works.

I am currently visiting family in Houston. The neighbor has 3 dogs (1 year old puppies) with mange. I am a colloidal silver user and I have my own machine. I am currently making up 1 quart batches for neighbor and they are applying to dog's skin and putting solution in their water and food. After 1 week, the skin is looking better and they are not scratching as much. Will be here 3 more weeks and will keep up with this treatment. If colloidal silver not available, I was also told that using just straight organic vinegar is also effective along with baby oil on inflamed areas.

Cat mange cure:

I rescued a cat with mange and struggled with it all summer. It seemed cured but kept on scratching, then my other cats began to catch it. I tried everything, advantage, hydrogen peroxide, Scratchex, ACV, essential oils.

Then last week I heard a doctor on the radio talking about Oregano oil to cure upper respiratory symptoms. I bought some tiny oil caplets, and in desperation, gave one to my cat with mange. In two days it's totally on the wane, no more scratching.

The vet only med, Revolution, is a heartworm med, Intervectin that acts from within to kill the mites. That's what gave me the idea to give them Oregano Oil, and it's been immediately effective. When they have mites on their face you cannot treat with other things, and bathing is definitely something they hate. This seems to be an immediate cure.

Our dog Coco who had this when we got her home. She was still a pup. She got this from the mother dog. Coco has a very delicate system. We first tried the vet's way with a dip that stunk like rotten eggs. We brought her home and tried that until the dips irritated her skin and she ran a tempature. We put Coco on local antibiotics one for her face and an oral one. The doctor put her on Ivermectin and it worked for a while until she started to throw up the meds. This is what is used in heart worm medication. Also the vet told us not to give her Ivermectin at the same time as we gave her heart worm meds. When we had stopped the Ivermectin within 3 months the buggers came back in full force. So, we did some research holitically that landed us here on this website. We went to a local pet feed store. They have a lot of holistic foods etc. At the store, I found a local over the counter medicine for sarcoptic mange for dogs and horses. It has linseed oil, pine tree oil and sulfur. It has a smell to it but not as bad as the other stuff from the vet. Asked if it worked and one customer tried it and it worked. I cleaned her with a well known flea and tick shampoo which had Pyrethrin in it. This one product had the highest Pyrethrin in it out of all the others. Pyrethrin is a natural insecticide. We wet her down scrubbed & washed her in our tub with warm water with the flea and tick shampoo and left it on her for about 7 minutes. Her scabs came off. We dried her off. I took a face sponge for make-up put the mange medicine on her. Around her face we used vegetable oil. It took a bottle of that mange medicine. After, I put the mange medicine we rubbed her with vegetable oil. I also used the spray vegetable oil which works well for "Hot Spots". We did this for about 3 weeks. Then we changed our regime and first washed her with some of our vet's shampoo for dogs for delicate skin. It is is a Hypo-Allergenic Shampoo. Then we still used the flea and tick shampoo. Then we stopped the mange lotion and put a biological natural flea and dog spray on her. It has avocado and other natural stuff for their skin as well as something for fleas & ticks. This worked well on her. She's an indoor dog. So far so good. Her hair is growing back and she's happy and playing. We also placed her on a dog food that has Salmon in it for her skin. We also put an insecticide for the yard to kill bugs, fleas, ticks. etc. We washed her bedding and cleaned our carpet with a carpet shampoo. I would suggest covering your furniture and pillows because of the mange medicine. This process takes about three weeks to a month. Ths skin will dry and flake off and the new skin comes in. 07/09/2009: April from North Florida, replies: " For mites on the dog -- try covering the dog with mayonnaise!!! Leave it on as long as you can before rinsing it off. After rinsing I like to shampoo the dog and rinse with vinegar and water. The dog may smell like a salad while wearing the mayo, but the mayo suffocates the mites. We run a dog rescue and take in babies with all sorts of skin ailments, and this works like a charm getting rid of mites. Lots of people claim dogs with mange are incurable - well, the mange caused by mites is taken care of with mayo every time."

April thanks for posting tis.. I did this twice in 12 hrs to my little female pooch

it is awesome.. and the mayo also made her coat smooth and the vinegar balanced out the residual redness of her skin .. I can't believe how well it worked and how calm it made her.. like she was getting a spa treatment .. the may gave her instant relief

guess the mites are less active right away?? And she just laid there I was able to leave the mayo on for over an hour each time. I put sterile gauze pads in the apple vinegar and let them stay on her deflated mite sites......again AWESOME.. about 75 to 80 percent better after the first treatment and a small gain after the 2nd on.. I am letting her skin recuperate and w ill do it again in a day or two

my question.. how often to you do this treatment.. how long does it take ( does it vary) to eliminate all the mite sites? and more specific instructions would be appreciated
