i read in a book that swedish woman use horseradish on their faces to cure brown spots. I tried it and i will have to say it really worked. Not only did it take away brown spots instantly but it made my face glow and took away my sleep crease .definately give this a try i haven't heard anyone talking about horseradish but it works. Just get the kind at your local store that is crushed and put it on in a circular motion, leave it on for a few minutes and rinse.

Shark Cartilage Oil
Posted by Mesem (Toulon, France) on 12/22/2010

Some species of sharks are being hunted to extinction to satisfy the needs of self-obsessed people like you with no environmental conscience. Don't increase the demand for products from WILD animals, are you sure you wouldn't like a bit of rhinoceros horn thrown in? Try and see a little further than you nose. The sharks taken for cartilage are not eaten just wasted.

Turmeric

I drink turmeric powder in almond or coconut milk every day - 1/2 teaspoon - and I also use it my facial masks at least once a week. It is a wonder spice. I never have breakout since taking it. Turmeric is great for cleansing the blood and detoxifying the liver and it is also amazing skin brightener. My favorite is a simple turmeric and raw honey mask - 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric in 1 tablespoon of raw honey mixed well. Apply to face and neck. Leave on for at least 20 minutes and wash off. Be careful not to get turmeric around light coloured clothes since it stains.

Aging Hands Remedies
Posted by Cat (Tauranga, New Zealand) on 09/05/2013

Hi David, thanks for advice.... No, the problem with the hands isn't bruising - it's skin tears. Even very small ones last 6 months. I'm sure doing the dishes without gloves doesn't help but I am careful not to put my hands into the water too far when doing them. I do stay clean otherwise though as far as washing my hands when necessary. Also I have very dry skin so if a wound does try to heal, it becomes so dry, I have a tendency to pick at the forming scab so rush to get some coconut oil lathered into my hands asap! I really think I need to take some flaxseed internally as I read on here and see if that can help from the inside. P.S. Your hands sound fantastic!

Turmeric

Hi Earthclinic. Some of you know me form other posts. Ive tried every remedy for beautiful skin in and out this site. I happen to have sensitive skin with freckles, coupled with rosacea around my nose. Plus I live in a very dry weather so the situation in my face was discoloration around that area redness, dry, rough skin coupled with large pores and dead cells.

I've had sucess using remedies from this site like the oil cleansing method, ACV, hidrogen peroxide or EVCO, borax urine therapy.

Some of those remedies helped cleansing my skin or diminishing wrinkles but none of them and I say NONE has worked like turmeric.

I read that turmeric needs a fat to be absorbed. I use it in 2 ways. First is mix some turmeric with skim milk in a little cup and apply it to my face. I let it dry for 5 or 10 min and rinse with cold water.

The other way is mixing it with coconut oil or sesame oil and massage my face as if it was an exfoliator. Again let it sit for 10 or 15 min and wash it off. This time you will need bathroom tissue to wipe it off. Be careful of using any towel cause turmeric will leave it yellow.

RESULTS

Ok guys IM 30 years old and I had just accepted that my skin was going to be red, dry and rough to touch around my nose forever. Tried every natural and cosmetic product on planet earth including snake creams, aloe soy products, lemon, exfoliators. I just cant list all the products I have used thru the years.

After 1 application I couldnt believe what I saw. The redness was almost gone It didnt light my freckles they were more noticeable cause my skin was clearer. When I touched my face it felt amazing just like new skin, like the skin I had when I was a child. All the damage I had on my skin for years was gone in a few minutes.

Usually after exfoliating, dead cells start to peel of around my nose nostrils, netween my eyebrows etc. I was amazed that no dead cells or dry skin not even 2 days after using turmeric.

I have also noticed the skin on my forhead softer- it used to be dry and a horizontal wrinkle line begins to form. Today when I touch my forhead I see nothing but hydrated skin.

I've found truly a new skin, people you can buy a new skin to your face in the supermarket and its only2 dollars- its called turmeric.

Please if you read this and suffer from sensitive skin, dry skin in your face, dead cells, redness or rosacea run to your supermarket or indian store.

The best thing I have used period. Do it at night and wake up a brand new face.

Enlarged Pores
Posted by Beatrice (Vancouver, Bc/canada) on 01/06/2012

Coco, to eliminate the dryness after use of borax and soda, use apple cider vinegar as a toner to counteract the alkalinity of those washing agents. (the smell of ACV will evaporate quickly). I do this only at night time to clean all the makeup, in the morning, just wash your face with water, so you do not disturb the PH of your skin unnecessarily. Helps with acne and blackheads. My ideal moisturizer is a combo of rose water, fresh lemon juice and vegetable glycerine. No need for oils or creams.

Aloe Vera, Vitamin E

I have tried aloe with vitamin e every night for a month with no real changes. I have not noticed any changes in my skin whatsoever. The aloe vera really helps the skin to absorb the vitamin e. I am in my 30's with some acne and some wrinkles and this did not help either problem.

Dry Brushing, Oil

I stopped using soap of any kind, anywhere on my body and prior to shower I use natural bristle brush and in circular motions, start from feet and work my way up to chest. For Women chest and face are tender so use natural sponge. It sloughs old skin cells and I moisturize after with Cosmetic use, Sweet Almond oil and my skin is looking better day by day and skin feels exstremly clean and soft. I am 55 so my skin is looking less attractive than my youth. I am a proponant of only USA made products (start to finish)so I had to look at labels. Unfortunate challenge but I persevere.

Oil Cleansing Method

I came across the postings here regarding Oil Cleansing Method (OCM). I also browsed the internet regarding OCM. Although there were few negative feedbacks on this method, but the Positive feedbacks weighed much. So, yesterday I tried the OCM for the very first time. Today is my 2nd night of doing it, and really to my amazement, OCM really works! I have big, clogged pores and bad facial texture due to my acne problem when I was a teen-ager. I'm in my mid 40s and from time to time, still getting pimples/acne. For only 2 nights, my pores are cleaner - like more than 60% clean. Since yesterday, I could not stopped looking at the mirror because I could not believed the result of this simple, yet effective method. I always have the white/yellowish-thing that covers each pores. No matter how much I scrab and do facial cleansing, my pores were still clogged with dirt and hardened oil. Why did I not learn this in my younger years? For those people who didn't have good experience with OCM, be patient, probably, you were doing the wrong formula or amount of oil. Each person is different. I am glad OCM works for me. I finally found a natural way to clean and have good facial cleansing/treatment. Anyway, I thank the people who always contribute good information. Your postings are the catalysts for me to research and learn more about things that interest me and benefit my overall health. Thank you Earthclinic for a wonderful job!

Cucumber

Beautiful Skin

I had been using a 22 dollar natural chamomile cream on my face. I am 42 and take heavy medication for an autoimmune disorder. Btwn the meds and age, I was beginning to wrinkle. I do a lot of computer work and am into natural healing and looked up natural eye relief remedies for strained eyes. Cucumber came up and I also saw that wrinkle creams use cucumber extract. So, I decided to slice off 1/2 inch cucumber circle and rub it on my face as well as my eyes. I rubbed both sides of the cucumber circle all over my face til it was soggy and limp. It was an instant oil free moisturizer! My face has always been oily and the least bit of oil in something clogged my pores. I have dry parts on my face as well. Not any more! My skin absolutely glows, is super smooth and looks young. The wrinkles have been lessening and it's been about i month. I do this 2 to 3 times a day and the more I do it, the better my skin looks. I am African American and have uneven skin tone and it is evening out my dark eye circles. I dont even use the cream any more and just spend a 1.00 or two for naturally beautiful skin.

Avoid Sugar

One important thing about the skin I have learned over the years is that sugar really affects it. If I have something sweet to eat at night, I wake up the next morning with dark circles under my eyes and dry, cracked skin that looks like it has aged something fierce overnight. I have been diligent lately and cutting back my sugar intake throughout the day and I can see a difference in my skin. You know the saying, you are what you eat? I believe it! What you eat immediately shows through your pores. I am also starting to juice every day too with greens like kale and swiss chard, apples and lemons. It gets expensive buying organic produce to juice, but the weight loss is great and my skin is glowing.

Oil Cleansing Method for Beautiful Skin

I have always had perfect skin... and then I had my baby who's now 2 years old...and suddenly I have skin like a teenager. This has been pretty rough for me, considering I am over 30 years old. I've always had great skin and suddenly having to deal with this has been difficult.

When I became pregnant I more or less swore off all the store bought skin care. Which is ironic because I am a cosmetician and make-up artist.

Oil Cleansing has been AMAZING for me...it took a little while to find the right combinations of oils for my skin. I have pretty normal skin that borders on slightly dehydrated. I'm a make-up artist, so I wear make-up almost every day. I'm not a fan of concealer/foundations so I rarely wear those but I ALWAYS wear at least mascara and blush. I hate having to use a make-up remover and then a face wash - I want it gone in one step. I've also always had black-heads on my nose. Tiny little black/brown/grey dots on the sides of my nose...driving me crazy.

So my mix (in a 3 oz bottle) is approx. 40% Castor Oil, 30% Olive Oil, 30% Coconut Oil, a few drops of Rose Hip Seed Oil, 3 or 4 drops of Lavender Essential Oil, and about 10 drops of Sage Essential Oil. I put about 3 pumps of this oil onto my dry face and massage for about 3-5 minutes. Then I soak a washcloth in hot hot water and squeeze out the excess. I bring it to my face and let the steam rise up out of the washcloth and as the washcloth cools I bring it closer to my face until I have it pressed against my face while still hot (but not too hot). I leave it there for about a minute then gently wipe the oil off. I repeat this process another 2 times until all traces of oil are removed from my face.

The week before my period I will add an extra couple of drops of either Sage Essential Oil into the mix in my hand or a couple of drops of Lemon Essential Oil for extra deep-cleaning.

After I pat my face dry I will use ACV as a toner. I moisturize with a mixture of about 60% Jojoba Oil, 39% Coconut Oil and 1% Sage Essential Oil. I use pure Olive Oil or Jojoba Oil around my eyes, and then seal that in with an organic home-made lip balm (you can use a store brought brand, just make sure it's all-natural/organic and free of mint).

I am completely wrinkle free, have an even and bright complexion. I don't wear sunscreen (as I don't believe in those chemicals), except when I go to the beach, in which case I *may* wear an all-natural sunscreen that uses Physical Sunscreens (Zinc Oxide/Titanium Dioxide) and a wide-brimmed hat.

The break-outs I've been dealing with are clearing up, THANKS TO THIS WEBSITE. I have been doing the Turmeric Masks, drinking ACV as well as using it as an astringent twice a day, I just started incorporating Blackstrap Molasses into my routine as well (internally AND externally). I just started with Organic, High-Lignan Flax Seed Oil from the refridgerated section. I am drinking at least 8 cups of water a day (I have been for a while) and am a pretty healthy eater...most of my meals are cooked at home from scratch and we rarely eat junk (we follow the 80/20 rule - healthy at least 80% of the time).

Thank you Earth Clinic (and everyone who contributes) for teaching me how to holistically take better care of me and my skin!

To Kavi from Trinidad - Tumeric for beautiful skin - I wanted to try this as her explanation of beautiful skin made me want the same. I had used tumeric for a boil and it worked so well! I had also read of coffee grounds for exfoliating. So I get a small cup and add coffee grounds, tumeric and a pinch of salt. I get into the shower and start rubbing this on my face. I look down at my hands and see how yellow they are!! OMG! It is not coming off, then I remember I had applied this to my face! As a very fair skinned hispanic women I remember that Kavi had stated she was Indian, which meant her skin was darker than mine! I was laughing so hard thinking that I was going to spend the next few days with yellow skin! And explaining that I read this great remedy on-line!! I continued my shower rinsing my face very well and then washing with store bought face cleaner. Much to my surprise my skin was not yellow! My hands were still slightly yellow but my face was not. I got a good laugh and my face felt very smooth and looked great!

Thanks for the great website it has helped my family and I with numerous home remedies!

Korean Glove
Posted by Jonna (Los Angeles, California USA) on 06/10/2009
★★★★★

I've been going to one of the Korean spas in Koreatown once a week for the past month, mostly to dunk in the hot and cold baths that they have. One of the daily rituals that I noticed the elderly Korean women at the spa do is to to scrub their skin vigorously, every inch of it, with one of those cheap exfoliating gloves (sold in asian markets for $2). Their skin looks incredible, very youthful. I decided to try it at home and every day at the end of my shower I scrub away. Then I end with a one minute cold shower. It works, my skin is glowing! I don't do this on my face, I think the glove is too rough for that, but everywhere else on my body that I can reach.

I am very curious to know if, because of this daily ritual and staying out of the sun, Korean women don't get age spots. It would be very rude of me to siddle up to someone at the spa and inspect their forearms to check for age spots, lol, so I hope someone on Earth Clinic will be able to answer that!

Urine Therapy

Re the comments about urine for the complexion: A Russian nurse told me about a middle aged woman who had the most beautiful, clear ski. Apparently, she applied her own urine to her skin. When you think of it, it is not that strange. The most expensive facial creams contain uremia, basically urine. So, why not give it a try.

Multiple Remedies

Taking one tablespoon of flax seed oil (an omega 3 essential oil, meaning we cannot create it within ourselves) internally twice a day, and/or using ground flax seeds in smoothies, hot cereals, on salads and veggies will moisturize your skin from the inside out. It will take several months of taking it internally on a consistent basis to see a difference in your skin because your body will address its nutritional needs before it will address the skin. Beauty starts on the inside.

Be sure to store either the oil or the seeds in the fridge or freezer to prevent them from going rancid, which this oil does easily. This is also a good preventative against breast cancer.

Also, flax seed oil is an excellent moisturizer and healing agent used topically on the skin. I am experimenting with this oil in making my own lotions and creams. I remember using Noxzema on my face as a teenager and the compliments I got after using it to clear up a few zits. One of the main natural ingredients in Noxzema is linseed oil, aka flax seed oil.

Something else you can do is make a cream using shea nut or cocoa butter instead of coconut oil. Coconut oil is recommended as a moisturizer for those with oily skin. You can take 1 cup of nut butter, melt and add 1/2 cup of another oil like apricot kernal, rosehip seed oil, flax seed oil or jojoba oil plus a teaspoon of vitamin E oil as a preservative. Simmer only or use a double boiler so you don't destroy the healing properties of the butters and oils, then pour into jars for use. This thins the butter and adds other oils for more skin nutrients. The key in applying any cream or lotion on the skin is to apply it to damp skin to seal in the moisture.

Another thing to do that's highly recommended is to a body scrub with an oil and either salt or sugar or both added. In a container, add about 1/2 of the salt or sugar and add enough oil to cover about 1/4 inch above the mixture. This exfoliates the dead skin off so the water from bathing and the oils or creams applied after have a chance to penetrate into the skin. A few drops of an essential oil like rose, lavender, frankincense, carrot seed, or jasmine for dry skin will scent the cream and add healing properties to it.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of pure clean water to flush the body and rehydrate. Not drinking enough will lead to dry skin.

One last suggestion. Do an internal cleanse like Dr.Natura's Colonix internal cleansing system. I was amazed at what this product did for me, and I have written about this on a thread for heavy metal cleansing. The benefits go way beyond cleansing heavy metals. Getting rid of the accumulated gunk on your insides helps you absorb nutrients needed for your health and beauty. There are many testimonies on their website about hair, skin and nail improvements from this cleanse among many other things.

I love the suggestion about the AC vinegar. I've been researching homemade skin, body and hair care recipes and I would like to try that out. My only problem is that I do not have a bathtub. Would slathering it on my body with a sponge in the shower have the same effect?

Blessings and good luck!

I just want to thank Earth Clinic for such helpful health advice. I was already using ACV. (*1/2 cup in the morning). But I noticed my depression worsening I was thinking of going to a therapist. When one night I was internet surfing and found this site. I also kept having migraine headaches. (of course) no doctor, or medicines helped. I ran across the oil pulling remedies. So, I tried it. The results are great!!!! The oil pulling (first thing in the morning) *1/2 a cup its the BEST THING I could have done. Its healthy for me and has no negative side effects. My depression has gone away!!! I sleep better, I am not restless, my mood swings have diminished. I have so much energy its ridiculous!!! I can feel and see the difference. I have also tried the BSS (Baking Soda Scrub) I add honey and a little water until it thickens to my liken. (I have oily/combo skin). I used ACV as a toner,(diluted with water on a cotton ball). VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) as a moisturizer. (very thin amount) My face glowed. I only do it 3x a week. It is so great to have all these resources at hand. And they are so inexpensive. Thank You so much!!! Earth Clinic.

I know the feeling. I had to lie through my teeth after mixing HP with ACV instead of HP with borax......very embarrassing and all you can do is laugh. I have very fair skin with a lot of redness. When I want a tumeric mask I just mix it with VCO and leave it on for 10 min at the most and it always comes off quite easily. Maybe it was the type of oils that you used.

I was worried about turmeric staining as I have fair skin, but I put some turmeric with raw honey and used it as a mask (didn't measure, just threw some together). It washed off just fine, only problem was my fingernails stayed a bit yellow. It seems to tone the skin a bit, I'm hoping it will help reduce my acne.

I too have done the turmeric mask with coconut oil and honey and I haven't had any problems taking it off. I am thinking that when I make salads with cilantro I usually put lemon juice because it accentuates the flavor of the cilantro, so maybe the lemon juice had to do with it? Just try it without the lemon juice. Good luck!

I tried this last night on my fair skin using Che's recipe, and it washed off ok. After rinsing I used a microfiber cloth to get the last residue off due to the oil. Then I rubbed in some VCO and blotted off the excess. My skin was very smooth and felt well hydrated. The oil may be a key to preventing staining. I have also read of masks using turmeric mixed with yogurt...will have to look into that.

Turmeric for face mask

I've been drinking turmeric milk and am ready to try it for skin. I see some people have turned yellow using the face mask recipes. One thing I notice is that Lita's recipe only calls for a teaspoon of turmeric, while some of the people who turned yellow used as much as 1-2 tablespoons of turmeric--that's 3-6 times more! I plan to start with just 1/2 tsp and to do a test first on my inner arm near the elbow crease. Even natural remedies have to be used responsibly--no one thing works perfectly for every one. And that said, I love this site!

Oh-my, too much turmeric. As soon as I read the amounts, I thought, hoowhee, it should be more like a Tablespoon of honey and a Teaspoon of turmeric. Even with a teaspoon, it takes a bit of effort to get it all off, but a turmeric mask is definitely worth it. Just gotta remember, a little dab'll do Ya' ;)

I can't say whether the additional ingredients make it more inclined to stain the skin, but I will say it isn't necessary to doctor it up like that. Just the two simple ingredients, T/honey and t/turmeric make a wonderfully good mask.

WARNING!

Turmeric stains skin. Period. If you are fair, it can last for days. In India where a haldi mask is applied to arms/legs before weddings it gives a golden glow. Here in the US, when I do it it turns this pasty-pale chick yellow for days if applied straight. If I dilute a 1/4 tsp or so with besan and yogurt as a mask it will come off with enough scrubbing and not stain very deeply. But make no mistake, it stains. And the more of it you use, and the less it is diluted with other ingredients the harder it is to get off. Not a bad thing, but do be warned.
