Natural Remedies for Chronic Sinusitis Relief

Apple Cider Vinegar

Unbelievable! I just tried organic (mother) apple cider vinegar (2 Tbsp) and honey (1 Tbsp) in an 8 oz glass of warm water about 30 minutes ago. The honey made it very palatable. After drinking that down and waiting for about 15 minutes I decided to have some lunch. I haven't actually TASTED food like I tasted it today for a LONG time! It was cashew chicken and brown rice, and I tasted every spice and flavoring in it! What a difference! My sinuses started clearing immediately, but the big surprise was how much better my throat felt right away. This may be from the honey coating my throat, but who cares what's doing it when it works this well? This drink will be part of my daily routine from now on. Thank you to Earth Clinic & everyone for all the positive comments!

Cayenne

Cayenne Pepper is curing my sinusitis. Absolutely crazy and I would have never thought of snorting lines of cayenne considering the burn it must deliver, but it works. I've taken some powder(1/6 of a pinky nail) and soaked it in water(1 teaspoon) and use my finger to drop it into my nose. I did it this way so as to get used to the feel. It works just as good causing my sinuses to discharge profusely and thereby loosening all phlegm in the sinus cavity. I feel that in the next few days I will be rid of this thing.

Cayenne

I have suffered sinus problems for most of my life. A few years ago I awoke to a badly swollen face, it was painful to touch. I seldom go to the Dr. but this was serious. The medical assistant said I had a sinus infection and the best cure was to irrigate my sinuses, she suggested I use a Neti pot and warm salt water. I took her advice and a few hours later the swelling was down, my ability to breathe was enhanced and I have never had a serious problem since. I use salt water most days but if the problem is more pronounced I use Cayenne, ACV or H202. The wonderful thing about sinus irrigation is how rapidly it works, for me it's a matter of minutes. You don't want to use a large dose of Cayenne, just a hint will do the job.

Hello John, Usually it is an allergy or intolerance causing the blockage and the blockage causes the infection. Try leaving off all hair sprays, after shaves, colognes, paint fumes, etc. & avoiding all of the above on other people as much as possible and see if it helps to keep your nose/sinuses open. I used to work with a guy who had surgery on his sinuses (2 times that I know of & may have had some before I met him). Poor guy, he always smelled like he had marinated himself in some strong smelling aftershave &/or cologne, but he was averse to leaving his smelly stuff off, when I suggested that it might be the cause of his chronic sinus problems.

Xylitol Nasal Spray
Posted by Dianna (Austin, TX) on 02/06/2009

oh wow. i love xylitol. i am diabetic and have not been able to eat sugar for years. since i found xylitol i have occasionally used it for mouth rinses and also on foods when i want a sweetener. you know that it is poisonous for dogs?

well, i just want to say that i ate a tablespoon of xylitol (hahaha) mixed with VCO and cocoa powder and peanuts.... you probably know what happened...

i had very bad cramps and diaharreah (sp?) the next day... be careful with the amount of xylitol you use - i don't know if snorting it into your sinuses can have this effect - but it is a crazy side effect IMO.

i also use a home-made version of a neti pot. what i do is put sea-salt (and occasionally a little baking soda too) in a glass of warm water and hold one nostril closed and stick the other one in the solution and inhale it. it comes out my mouth and washes down my throat. i can't get it to come out my other nostril using this method - but it does seem to wash allergins, etc. from my sinuses.

Oil Pulling

I always had Sinus issues as far as 12 years now. Allergies manifested as really quickly. Oil pulling is a god send for people with any of these issues. It became a routine for me before brushing and makes my day a whole lot better. It loosens up the phlegm in the sinuses that accumulates overnight and make it easy to sneeze it out. It seems to also take care of the stubborn plaque and teeth cleaning. Sometimes, if the brushing in the evening does not make me feel clean on teeth, i get to another round of oil pulling to clean up.

However, do not oil pull without at least 3-4 hours after eating and 30mins after drinking anything. This is also mentioned elsewhere. Please follow the instructions meticulously. One thing i noticed is that the amount of time you swish it in mouth depends on how stuffed you are. If you are good, oil takes a while to liquify and if you are stuffed, it liquifies quickly and you can feel it thinning.

This also helps me manage my allergies and I stopped using the sprays and now i am on accupucture treatment to completely get rid of these problems.

If you have that feeling of phlegm stuck in your lower sinuses even with oil pulling, you may want to use netipot. Use kosher salt and warm water. That should give you relief for atleast 24 hours, free of any stuffing what so ever. There are advanced techniques with neti pot (drug stores call it sinus rinse) which can effectively clean every part of sinus over time. Good luck!

Salt Rinse

Salt rinse cures my sinus flare ups: I never had problems with sinus until recently when I was diagnosed with allergies from all outdoor things. I was taking shots but, had no luck. I moved and they wanted to start the damn shots over again from the weakest dosage. What a scam!!! So, I decided to do as I was always told. Spray the nose pathage with salt water. I first bought the solution from the drugstore and now, make my own and place in the bottle I bought. I spray up my nostrils in the shower, pinch my nose, shake and blow the crap out. Boy, the next few days I felt great. Now, I only use it as a monthly or so routine. If I sense I have an allergic affect or sinus flare up then, a spray or two a few days or a week or so will solve the problem. I've been sinus ache free and medicine free for a four years now. Darn glad I found your site to tell others and to learn how to take care of myself without a prescription (otherwise known as a low dosage poison). Thanks for the time,
Bob!!!

Food Allergies

For the last year and a half have been suffering from chronic sinusitus, but didn't realize how bad it was. Had headaches and light sensitivity in the morning upon waking, making it difficult to get out of bed. My head felt heavy. Sometimes my cheekbones would hurt. Sometimes a tooth would hurt, but it was fleeting and would shift around to different teeth. Felt fatigued and burned out by demands upon me. Didn't have any cold symptoms or runny nose, nothing to indicate allergies. (I think that my sinuses were so clogged that nothing was moving at all.) Also, I don't eat sugar at all as years ago I had a candida condition that made me give it up altogether. While I think that sugar is bad for immunity, I don't think it is the sole cause of sinusitus. There are very athletic people who eat very good diets that suffer from this disease. I had already given up dairy (milk, cheese etc.) as I knew they were mucous-forming, and I had lactose intolerance, but still had a lot of symptoms.

Tried Neti pot (spelling?) on the recommendation of a friend who said he thought I had sinusitus, but the pressure of the water running into my sinuses was too uncomfortable. I hated it.

Strangely, it was a psychic that clued me in to the cause. He said, you are in pain because of something to do with fertility/sexuality. I thought this was really strange and then I thought, could I be sensitive to eggs? I gave them up and within 3 days I was feeling profoundly better. Then I got a "cold", which I really think was the fluid finally draining from my passages. I went to my acupuncturist and she suggested that I might also have a fungal infection and began treating me with Phellostatin. That has really helped too. I think she was right and I read somewhere recently that a pediatritian who tested kids with chronic sinus problems for candida and other yeasts found them present in a huge percentage (something like 202 out of 290 kids). I would say to anyone suffering from chronic sinus problems is this, check out food sensitivities first. Eliminate the foods you eat most frequently or the ones that are most likely to be allergens or the ones that are more likely to be congestive. Don't overlook the possibility of fungal infection. Doctors tend to focus on bacterial infections and prescribe antibiotics. Don't forget that fungus infections can be the underlying cause.

I'm on the road to being cured. I'm going to try the ACV cure as well. It makes sense that it would work.

Oregano Juice and Salt

I know your question was written long ago, but in case anyone is wondering too, you can buy it online by the name Oreganol -not sure if it is company name. But if you have juicer that can juice greens, you could juice some of your own, however it probably wouldn't be as strong since that one is wild.

I tried GSE for my sinusitis, the result wasn't immediate, as is the case with most natural remedies, I believe. ACV helped a bit. Wanted to suggest something else, though. Try Malavit. It can be used for almost any ailment. It works for me! I get it from Russia, but I found a link in English, too.

Fennel, Flax and Fenugreek Seeds
Posted by Alexandra (London)

Just commenting: no idea about the tomatoes for sinusitis but will pass it on. Always avoid dairy products when you have any sinus congestion of any kind. This helps--plus try a infusion of a mixture of these herbs, readily available fennel seeds, flaxseeds (aka linseeds) and fenugreek seeds. Mix equal parts of each seed. It's really up to the person how much of each seed they buy and how long they are going to be taking the combination. It's a combination I keep around. I tend to mix up a 1/4 cup of each seed and mix them into a jar and keep them in a cool dark place until they are needed. When needed place a heaping teaspoon of the mixed seeds into a mug of boiling water. Allow to steep, or infuse, whatever you call it, then stir, (sieve if you like or better, eat the seeds) then drink copious amounts. Really does the trick for any congestion lung and sinus.

★★☆☆☆

I'm at the end of my rope with this chronic sinus and polyps. Can't smell. Can't taste. Constantly blowing my nose and or sneezing. I've been trying the TTO in my sinus rinses twice a day and doing the TTO and castor oil drops. I've started throwing in rinses with a couple teaspoons of ACV. Been 3 weeks now, and I'm not feeling much progress.

Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate

Hi Cheryl,

did you have to take dairy out of your diet, specifically, yogurt or maybe other dairy? I would so love to hear back from you as I have been suffering with post nasal drip with heavy mucus in throat 24 7, losing my voice for the first half of the day. I do netti pot with seasalt and can tell there is heavy congestion in my head mornings. Headaches when I wake up. So far I am only taking 500 mg of Magnesium Citrate 2 x per day, and Vitamin C powder 2 x per day and tumeric tsp 2 x per day.

I've been taking 10,000 - 20,000 mcgs of biotin for several years and still have sinus issues. I'm guessing that something else -- in addition to the biotin -- helped Dara, the previous reviewer from 2017.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Posted by Mcneillmama3 (Nc) on 01/17/2016

I have had problems with chronic sinus infections, had sinus surgery which did no good and tubes put in both ears. My doctors had me on round after round of some very serious antibiotics, erythromycin which gave me yeast infections and diarrhea; clindamycin while I was pregnant which carries a pregnancy warning; and doxycycline which had me so sun sensitive, I could not even walk out to the mailbox without using sunscreen. After reading that most sinus infections are caused by viruses, I wondered why those doctors kept prescribing antibiotics without even doing a culture. Now 20 years later my normal flora is resistant to several different antibiotics now. So I don't take them and I don't dare go to a doctor with a sinus infection. I just got a new infection right before Christmas. I got over it, but when I went back to the elementary school where I tutor, I caught something else from the kids that went right straight to my sinuses.

I'm currently using saline rinses and drinking lots of ACV+honey. I also use a Vick's personal steam inhaler with menthol/eucolyptus pads in it and breathing steam throughout the day. I'm taking Turmeric capsules as directed on the bottle. Now I'm going to try the ACV nasal rinse.

Coconut oil for sinus relief:

I melted 1 tablespoon of cold pressed virgin coconut oil and added it to the warm water and salt in my "nasal irrigation kit". The coconut oil came out of the bottle last and I have a pleasant aroma every time I breathe in through my now clear nostrils. I also ate a tablespoon and gave the dogs some too, they love it.

Strengthen Digestive System
Posted by Sam (Miami, FL) on 09/06/2014

Many of the sinus problems experienced today have their root in the digestive system, especially the stomach and upper small intestine which directly receives partially-digested food from the stomach. This digestive problem is described more specifically as a weakness in the digestive fire; in Ayurvedic terminology (3), the problem is manda agni: dampened ability to transform and metabolize. Why is this a problem in relation to the sinuses? Because the food is not as quickly and as thoroughly digested as it should be, leading to production of byproducts that affect the sinuses. An important step in remedying the chronic sinus disorder is external oeliation, or, more simply, oil massage.

A key to ultimately eliminating the problem of sinus congestion is to invigorate the jathar agni. The total treatment for the sinus problem is to increase the digestive fire.

Rose Hips

Rose Hips powder has been the answer to my chronic sinusitis. If you take the powder, make sure to get an organic brand and start slow - like 1/4 teaspoon. Build up to a higher dose you are comfortable. Keeps me up if I take too much, but that could just be me. I have an extremely sensitive system. Anyway, rose hips has totally cured the wretched sinusitis I've had for years already! I did get a little more stuffy the first few days - I guess it was a detox reaction. For me, I took pure Rose Hip powder alone - no added vitamin C or anything else. Rose hips powder is must try for sinus problems!! I can't emphasize that enough!

A cold head starts off sinus problems!

I was having all sorts of trouble with sinusitis and found that benadryl works better than any prescription I was given by doctors for sinusitis! And it is over the counter medication and inexpensive. Two tablets can make you drowsy! Don't drive or operate machinery while taking them. And most important DON'T ALLOW YOUR HEAD TO GET COLD!

I wear a double cap at night because if my head gets cold I will get a sinus attack and this leaves me very weak the next day!

Sinusitis attacks can weaken you. Use a blow dryer to warm your head and neck area if you are cold. This routine has me nearly well from Sinusitis!

I believe my sinus problems started by me foolishly placing drinks (of any kind) in the freezer and drinking freezing drinks down. Just my take. This coldness seemed to start my sinus problems off.

Amy, that's interesting. I remember my grandma having us wear a hat after a bath, even in the summer, for at least 1/2 an hour. I've done that with my kids and have rarely, if ever, needed to go to a doctor for ear infections with them, which, I think, is odd nowadays!

Mmsg Your Grandmother was wise!

I wish someone had told me this about the cold and the head!

I was ill from my sinuses for about 10 years and not one doctor could help me. I had ACID coming down the sinuses! I believe this acid type liquid was coming from my head, at least the head was throbbing at the very top when I had the attacks. Most people says that is not possible? I think it is!

It is awful to be on your own with a bad medical condition!

Isn't is strange that the Medical community insists that cold does not harm us? It does! At least some people are badly affected by the cold.

I have lived in Sunny California all of my life but cold drinks in the freezer devastated my life. I would forget about the drink I had in the freezer and when I drank the drink it was colder than having ice cubes in them! Not Good!
