Treatments of mold exposure are numerous and include lifestyle remedies as well as natural supplements and cleanses. Effective treatment regimens involve specific treatment to eradicate the mold as well as supplementation for returning health. Natural cleaners are effective for eliminating mold much like supplements treat mold allergies.

What Is Mold Exposure?

The term mold is used to describe a variety of types of fungi that grow in filaments and reproduce via spores. Mold can occur almost anywhere and thrives in warm, damp, humid environments.

Exposure to mold can lead to a variety of adverse health effects including skin rash, itching, runny nose, eye irritation, cough, congestion and asthma. Additionally, excessive exposure to mold may lead to immune suppression and progressive lung conditions.

Natural Treatments for Mold and Mold Allergies

Effective mold treatment involves eliminating the mold at the source as well as treating allergies and other symptoms caused by mold exposure. Natural options safely eradicate the issues without causing additional harm. Borax is an effective mold cleaning agent while apple cider vinegar and colloidal silver are powerful supplemental health agents.

Borax is a natural cleaning agent composed of minerals. When diluted in water and sprayed or wiped on mold, borax eliminates the spores and prevents further development. Cleansing the affected area prevents further irritation.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a natural detoxifying agent complete with a variety of vitamins and minerals. When used as a tonic, diluted with water, apple cider vinegar flushes the system of mold spores and other irritants. Additionally, apple cider vinegar supports overall health by delivering several key nutrients to the system.

Colloidal Silver

A known antibiotic used for centuries, colloidal silver is antimicrobial and eliminates toxins from the body. As such, when taken in appropriate amounts, colloidal silver eliminates mold spores from the body as well as any associated irritants or toxins. Silver is also particularly effective as it does not create resistance or immunity in pathogens it kills.

Mold exposure is common and has detrimental health effects. When treated appropriately, however, mold can be eliminated as can the debilitating symptoms.

Hey Ted, I have lived in a house that has had been infested with mold for about ten years and I have started to see more and more hard as a result. I just had a question about Ammonia chloride. I am currently using ammonia chloride 99% and I was wondering if this is safe to use? and if not what % of ammonia should I be using? where could I buy it? Thanks

I live in Ann Arbor too and there are serious mold problems all over this city! Here's just one example:

Hi, I personally would not recommend taking Ammonia baths, particularly if you have Lyme. Ammonia is a neurotoxin left behind after killing Lyme along with Quinolinic Acid. I am very sensitive to Ammonia and when I get near an Ammonia bottle, I have head tremors. Most of us with Mycotoxin illness have faulty methylation due to mutations in our genes. Many of us already have too much Ammonia in our bodies because we have a faulty Ammonia and Sulphur detox ability. I would only use it to clean up mold on window sills or around the house, but remember our skin is one of the biggest organs and absorbs what we put on it.

Mold is a biotoxin, it is the equivalent of being exposed to agent orange, mold will eventually wear down your immune system because your body is fighting its invasion, You may became very ill, and it is seriuos t you can die from mold it can give you a heart attack I'm not trying to scare you but it is serious health hazard why do you think when the clean up team showns up to clean up mold they wear the hazmat suits an respirators. I kid you not get out of the house mold are found to be carcinagenic Find a doctor that trained with Dr Shoemaker and get treatment

An environmental doctor in Ann Arbor says to add a cup of 3% ammonia to your bath. And to bathe a few times per day. This along with a strict anti-candida diet and cleaning up your environment is supposed to do the trick. I am just embarking on this process so I can't testify to its effectiveness.

Once you're exposed to black mold and your body has a reaction to mold/mycotoxins then it is best to avoid it forever! I have read about taking a bath in like a 1/4 cup of ammonia I would wear protection Eye goggles if I was to do that, but I think it is too risky to me. The best thing to do to save your health is move out. It is suggested strongly to avoid re-exposure since the may cause permanent problems. My doctor suggested we move out of our house which we did. I washed all my clothes in ammonia, wiped all the furniture down and threw away tons of cloth furniture. Take Choleystramine four times a day; it is the most effective mold binder in the states.

Why aren't you using bleach on black mold? And does ammonia really work on mold and yeast ( in clothes) and fungus? I cant find anything on this.

I realize some time has gone by TN222222, I have become a bit of a mold expert out of nessesity and bleach does not kill mold. mold and bleach both have a positive charge, you need something with a negative charge to deal with mold. Bleach kills bacteria and bleaches mold but does not kill mold. "Clear Amonnia" (it says clear on the label) is what you want. It has a negative charge and will kill mold. This was taought to me by a pathologist Dr William Croft. 2 cups in full load laundry should take care of clothes or anything that will fit in the washer. in a spray bottle 50% water 50%amonnia to spray smaller arias, please note you still have to remove all contaminated materials, once the area is gutted and cleaned than spray again. Of course I am not reccomending anyone clean mold themselves but small areas, issues with mold throughout the rest your life this can come in handy. I periodically wash my clothes with amonnia to freshen. Just dont breathe it in:)

Lauriciden, Olive leaf extract, Colloidal silver, oregano oil are some of the best antifungals and probiotics.

Ammonia kills mycotoxins. We fogged our house with 2x this was after remediation . We of course wore a bunnysuit total face cover and eye googles. Ammonia kills the mycotoxins. Get this it does not kill the by-product that is gassed off from the dead mycotoxins. Nor can you get mold out of carpet and the walls completely it can travel deep into the walls it is invisible. The majority of patients from this doctors case studies showed that many patient return to remediated house. They all got sick and moved , except one family was going to go back there and try to live. The same happened to me we returned to our remediated home and I got sick we moved. Do not gamble with your health or your life.

You may want to take natural cures because steroids aren't the only thing to take. The 3% ammonia should work in a bath, as well as in washing clothes. I have found that tinctures such as Jojoba, Oregano Oil, Olive Leaf, Argon Oil, Grapefruit Seed, Kalmegh, Coconut oil all help. You can add these to tomato juice. Wipe down all surfaces with Colloidal Silver solution (Fungicide/viruside/anti-bacterial). Get an air cleaner with very good filters down to .003 microns. Get full testing and Infrared Thermography to check hot spots for mold and mycotixins. After remediation, get clothes cleaned environmentally with OZONE. Take lots of vitamins and little sugar. These things should help.

Hi Adelle,

I wondered if you have found a book that covers the material you stated about mold eradification:namely Ammonia etc. We too have found that bleach didn't work which surprised us and Ammonia did on our clothes and linens. Thanks to you, we now know why! it all comes down to yin and yang really ~ negative & positive charges.

Thank you for all your knowledge you shared!

We are at the beginning of trying to get well, even tho we've been at it for 2 years, no insurance but medicaid and no doctors that even want to do a fungal culture or zilch to diagnose the problem.

Now to try and get Medicaid to cover some of Dr. Berndtson's bill (he is trained under Dr. Shoemaker in Il.).

I have learned that the Choleystramine is a scam. It is the only thing that the conventional MDs know. It is NOT the answer. Ozone for environment, and holistic/homeopathic mold detox for the body is recommended.

First off, my MD attended a conference on mold illness. Detox, detox, detox is the key to healing from black mold . First, MUST move out of the mold environment if you want to get well. My MD has me on Cholestyramine and sure you can have the compounding pharmacy make it without sugar, but the price soars. My copay of $10. would suddenly be $200. I just took the one with sugar in it because of the cost . Since I was wheezing my doctor had me take a specialized test for my sinuses it was positive for mold so the compounding pharmacy made BEGS spray for my sinuses issue, so that took care of that . You can starve the mold in your body by cutting off their food source, so getting on a special diet helps, the anti-candida diet or look up mold warriors. If you have a rebounder jump on that for 10 minutes a day because it gets the lymph system moving helps detox.

As for Ozone it is oxygen with an extra 03 it does not kill mycotoxins, mold aspergillus etc. Ozone is great, but not effective against fungus/mold that is proven and it is simple science. My doctor has me taking different binders at different times of the day . Activated charcoal, Cholestraymine, Acz nanoparticle advanced cellular zeolite, Yerba Prima bentonite clay this is a super strong detoxifier this really grabs the mold and stops it from recirculating in your system . I seriously think it is way stronger than cholestraymine. Regular hot saunas ( not a fan of near infrared it does not cause the level of sweating that regular sauna does regular)if your too sick to stand or sit in sauna get a biomat and sleep on that . I got some extra cotton blanket and sweat out the toxins while I'm sleeping. I usually take the Yerba Prima bentonite clay to grab the toxins in my system while I'm sleeping and sweating. I always hydrate before going to use the sauna or biomat this way I never get a headache.

Also take a good mineral supplement/ electrolytes . I wash the bedding daily because sweating cause all the mold toxins and it's by products to be excreted onto blankets and sheets. I always wash in warm wash with ammonia . This is not something my doctor suggested I just did it I took a few ammonia baths a full bath and added clear ammonia in bath little less than 1/4 cup . I would wear eye goggles to be safe Washed all clothes in 2 c a clear ammonia (do not add detergent because it will alter the effectiveness of the ammonia) second wash with 1 c epsom salts. Do not cross contaminate your stuff and find a nice doctor that is educated in mold illness . Know there is light at the end of the tunnel.

What can be used in place of cholestramine? Thanks.

I used three other things that were suggested to me by my doctor. I think they are better than Cholestyramine, for me anyway because it seemed to make me feel better faster.

I got the big bottle of Great Plains, Bentonite Detox and G.I. Detox Bio-botanical research. I also took organic activated coconut charcoal. The longer the exposure to black mold the longer it may take for people to get well. My doctor told me it could take up to five years, that seems unbelievable. Most of the symptoms went away within few months to a year. However, some did not and it took much longer. Mold illness is very complex and it is good to get with a mold literate doctor because mold can causes body systems/processes to be disrupted that needs to be fixed. It is complicated and working with an expert helps in the detox program and they are able to suggest supplements to help the body function better. Cholestyramine is not a scam, it was the best that they had at that time.

I have recently discovered a website by an Italian Oncologist, Dr Simoncini, who has discovered that cancer is actually a fungal growth from candida and he has had great success curing people from all forms of cancer using baking soda mixed with molasses. I am thinking that as mould is a fungus, that this same procedure may work for those people infected with mould in their bodies. This is his website

He really needs the support of people who believe in other cures other than just pharmaceuticals!

Anti-Fungal Herbs and Foods
Posted by Sorrokine (Vs, Ny, Usa) on 11/23/2010

I was diagnosed by a Toxicologist in 10/09 with Late Stage Two Mycotoxicosis from a biopsy and a urine analysis. Doctors, Allergist and almost every doctor for an entire year could not do this. They told me it was allergies and such. I started to work in the basement office building May of 2008. The symptoms started in as little as three months there. Inside the mold contaminated building, I developed narcolepsy, boils, skin redness, yellow spots on my skin, white hair, vision disorders, depression, digestion issues, vomiting, jitters, shaking, mood swings, almost like a bi-polar disorder, lack of normal bowel movements, burning urine, really, the list goes on forever. Now before this building, and this job, I was a healthy 28 year old, with not one sign of any health issues. In fact I was fit, sound, and happy. Eventually these doctors I had visited each time told me that this is something they cannot investigate or they will loose their license as per the FDA. Found out normal studies in medical school do not include training on any type of mold sickness. What a Load of bull____.

Since being infected with mycotoxins and mold from a terribly poor quality office environment for roughly 18 months, which was covered with several different types of mold, (oozing with mycotoxins to the point they dripped from the walls to the floor - yellow color - they are the result of competing molds in their vicinity. ) I Finally began to look into some sort of cure. Prior to me meeting this amazing toxicologist, who is a leader in Mold sickness around the world, he was also the first to explain to me that the only way to kill mold and their toxins, is AMMONIA. (his info is on my site listed below) That's it. Ammonia kills the mycotoxins as well as the mold itself. TO MAKE THIS CLEAR - Bleach and peroxide cannot kill mold - they will just eat it as food. So He carefully instructed me to pour a 8 ounce cup of 3% clear ammonia into a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. This saved my lungs which were coated in mold and mycotoxins, as well as killed some of the yeast in my skin and body from absorption and contact. I highly recommend that if you know you're sick from mold, and near death, honestly, this is the first step. Ammonia baths. It saved my life. Also clean your house with it as well if you are not MCS (Multi-chemical sensitive - which is a result of chemical treatments for mold, and the mold itself causes this disorder - Baking soda kills mold on contact, however cannot kill the mycotoxins)

Also it is important to remember a few things on this subject. Washing all your clothing, sheets, towels and such in a cup of 3% clear ammonia is highly important since you release mycotoxins from your skin. They must be removed. Ammonia is the only way. Finally after two years of suffering, almost dying in December of 09, I had to quit the job and leave the premises that contained these terrible molds. My boss, my landlord all could care less. Great people. OSHA, cared little as well. I went to a homeopathic doctor who put me on an anti-candida diet, which is the main reason those who suffer with mold poisoning die so horribly. No carbs, no sugar, no yeast, nothing fermented. Candidas Albicanis is a yeast in our gut that can take over everything in our body when our immune system is compromised. It was eating away at my skin, my muscles, my organs, the toxin invaded my brain, and I lost sight partially in my left eye, and hearing in my left ear. It feeds off of all the sugar and carbs you ingest, starving your cells from the nutrients they desperately need. This diet didn't do much, but it did help with the nausea and vomiting issues. I also had a herbal tea mixture my friend and I researched. Bayberry root bark, Pleurisy root, gotu kola, nettles, Cinnamon and cloves. I was on this on and off in a two day cycle for about two months. Helped drastically, but not so much all the symptoms. Also catnip tea helped with the sleeping disorder and insomnia late at night. Teaspoon of each in a 32 ounce pot. Drank whole pot in one day, repeated next, then gave myself two days to recover.

So only as of about 3 months ago, I started a strict regimen of Supplements I heavily research to aid me in my recovery since all doctors said I was just going to die from this. The amazing realization is that what I had researched, is a cure to mold poisoning as well as candida infections. Yeasts, fungi and mold are not based on chlorophyll, they are single cell life forms based on a bacterial way of existence. Living off a host to gain nutrients. From Studying different anti-fungal herbs and foods, I created a regimen of supplements that has saved my life. They are:

Chlorophyll Supplements - (liquid gel caps, or liquid)
Alfalfa Extract - (for digestive and lack of appetite also lifts mood. )
Grape Seed Extract(breaks thru the brain blood bond barrier to clean out fluid inside)
Grapefruit Seed Extract - anti fungal
Milk Thistle - (Liver Function)
Oil of Oregano - Strong anti-fungal(only 3 wks on then 3 wks off)
Burdock (Liver function)
Dandelion (liver function)
Garlic - (Anti-fungal and heart help)
Onion - (anti-fungal)
Neem seed Oil (Exterior and interior treatment)
Rose hip Tincture

These I take in the morning when I wake up, and then again ever six hours. So far in as little as 3 months, All the skin abrasions, yellow spots, red boils, vision disorder, mood disorders, mood swings, bi-polar disorder, depression, hearing disorders, jitters, narcolepsy, brain fog, digestion issues, weakness of muscles, acidic body Ph, yellow nails, odor, omitted toxins after bathing left on towels, (Yes I smelled like mold, and after I bathed, the towel smelt the same way. It is a smell you can never forget. ) all of these symptoms - DISAPPEARING!! COMPLETELY FADING EACH DAY! I am so thankful I never gave up, and I am forever thankful for these wonderful aids in finding my recovery. I wanted to share this with as many people as possible since there are over 500, 000 diagnosed deaths from mold sickness each year, and thousands more that go on undiagnosed until autopsy.

Thank you and Here's to everyone learning we may have to live in a polluted world, but we don't have to live with polluted bodies!

I honestly feel like I'm drunk all the time, have been really dizzy, moody just not myself, vision changes (was wondering what kind of vision issues you have had also?), hearing issues, hair loss. It's been terrible! But I did go to a doctor recently who put me on an anti-candida diet as well, and am hoping it will make a big difference. I'm drinking milk thistle, burdock and dandelion tea everyday about 4x a day... Is there anything else you'd recommend? Regardless whether it was a hair test or other that determined you have too much heavy metals, here is an interesting tie-in to niacinamide you can start immediately to help with that part of your problems.

It's from the post on Alzheimers just sent in today.

You can buy a big bottle of niacinamide form of B3 (not niacin! ) for about $5 anywhere.

Article is from late 2009, high dose niacinamide in lab mice bred for brain amyloid plaques:

The tubules are like highways inside cells. Dr. Green said that niacinamide is "making a wider more stable highway. " Alzheimer's disease breaks down the highway (tubules). But niacinamide prevents this from happening.

I've previously told you how the toxic metal mercury also destroys these microtubules, potentially causing Alzheimer's disease. So anything that can prevent the damage or reverse it is a huge discovery.

You could also directly bind loose mercury, easily the worst offender of all heavy metals in the body, into the completely inert HgSe which will be excreted using a good selenium supplement, meaning preferably the organic form found right in plants and nuts, selenomethionine:

Selenium is a potent chelator of mercury (it binds to it and removes it from the body). Mercury exposure can therefore lead to a selenium deficiency.

Selenium at 250 mcg per day should be used in any mercury chelation program. Selenium has an unusually high "binding affinity" for mercury, making it a vital part of the support protocol when detoxifying mercury from the body.

You are exactly correct. Your account is 100% accurate. Having worked in the supplement industry, I learned much about different supplements that were on the market (mostly for bodybuilding). Then my boss and I decided that we should bring in natural products as it is a growing market and it's important. Seeing all of the things that you listed is great. Oil of Oregano is one of the strongest natural anti-fungal products out there; an excellent choice.

What prompts me to write this reply is that I am just discovering that my current sickness is due to black mold (Stachybotrys). It is a mycotoxin which gives of potentially deadly spores. I moved into my parents basement in a transition from moving from one city to another. It was an easy way to move and have somewhere for all of my stuff :) This winter destroyed the past records for snowfall which means, a LOT of snowmelt. Basements everywhere were being flooded. Luckily, my parent's house, built in 1987, withstood any water from penetrating into the basement. BUT, black mold can still thrive as the ground is saturated with moisture.

My gf, who is very healthy and has a great diet like myself, has become oddly sick. Not just regular flu or cold symtoms, but odd uni-lateral pains throughout her arms and legs. Very odd. After doctors just gave her prescription strength drugs (which did nothing), she went to a naturopathic doctor. They figured something else was up, something viral. They gave her many natural products to take and said to stay away from a high-arginine diet. Since we both have a high protein diet for our gym lifestyle, arginine is a very abundant and common amino acid. Her blood work also showed that she had high amounts of creatinine in her blood and another test that was supposed to be between 20-120, she was at 300. I can't remember the test.... Something like C/K, looks for broken down protein in the blood. Hers was high, which is odd because she supplements with branched chain amino acids everyday. When I had this ephiphany tonight about black mold, I researched it. Sore throat and respiratory problems is a major part of black mold sickness. Both her and I have had this nagging sore throat for about a month, and nothing can cure it. ALSO I read that black mold can prevent protein synthesis, which means, it prevents her body from chaining amino acids together to make muscle protein! This could explain the reason for the high amounts of this broken down protein in her blood which could relate to the uni-lateral pains in her extremities.

So I guess my message is, if you have these symtoms for longer than 2 weeks and there seems to be no cure or you aren't getting better, look at your environment. Colds caused by a virus tend to be fought off by your body in 12-14 days, as the affected cells in the nose, nasal cavity, and throat get replaced every two weeks(ish). Colds caused by a bacteria, like strep throat, can be treated with an anti-biotic and can be greatly minimized within hours of taking the first does. However, fungi are a different breed, especially when it comes to black mold. You are constantly being bombarded by spores which continually weakens or suppresses your immune system, not allowing you to get better. LOOK INTO IT.

Thanks for reading, hopefully this can help other so they don't have to go through something like my girlfriend did!

It is very important to remove mold from your home as soon as possible. Breathing in mold spores can be very dangerous to your health. Mold has been linked to asthma, respiratory issues, skin rashes, headaches, dizziness, SIDS and even cancer. We had mold in our home for years and didn't even know it. It does not always give off that typical "moldy" smell. Call in a mold professional to look over your home, they usually give a free evaluation and price quote for a cleanup. Then you will have a better idea of exactly what you are up against.

To Mike from Regina, Sask: Some of your girlfriend's symptoms, like the odd persistent sore throat, sound like they can be radiation-related. We are getting radiation from Fukushima since March of this year. It can cause sore throat, especially. The problem is mold sickness will be aggravated by radiation, so those unfortunate people may get sicker faster from radiation. The mold might also become more aggressive, from radiation. The symptoms of one can look like symptoms of the other, so be careful figuring out which one it is - it may be both, as well. I would think one way to tell is if the symptoms were there before March 11, 2011. If they were, and they are worse, it could be mold worsened by radiation. If they weren't, and suddenly came on after that date, especially after a few months so the radioactive particles had time to settle internally in your body from the food, water, and air, then maybe it's radiation (or radiation combined with some new mold exposure). Good luck to all of us getting either of these conditions properly diagnosed by doctors.

I am suffering from Toxic Mold Exposure and am severely ill. However, I have done a lot of research and contacted a lot of people over the last year and this is what I have found.

There is a toxicologist by the name of Dr. Thrasher. You can find them on the net for mold.

Also, for the the Ammonia, it works for some and not others. Remember it is a harsh chemical that will be soaked up by the skin, and if you have MCS it's just adds to your bodies toxic load. (you can use the non scented kind from the grocery store). Once a day for no more than 5 days. It's a hard thing to weigh. I personally won't do it.

As for losing hair, fungus on skin, etc. This can also be indicative of mold/fungus in the body. Detox may be required.

The most renouned mold doctors today are: Dr. Lisa Nagy, Janette Hope, Shoemaker, William Rae. They are the best in the field and have excellent protocals for detoxing the body.

There are specific Genetic defects that can cause a person to react so badly to mold, one of which is a gene MTHF genetic defect which does not allow the body to detox Environmental Toxins. Which can lead to mold poisoning susceptibility and MCS and other illnesses because you reach a "Toxic Load". Genetic testing can be done by Mold doctors to find out what genetic defects (if any) you are dealing with and how to work around them.

Do not remediate mold on your own, it will make you sick! It happened to me! Also, dont hire a cheap remediator, hire someone like This. Most local and cheap remeditors are horrible and dangerous. Go to FaceBook mold support forums and ask who is best.

Just thought I'd try to help.

Find an ortho molecular doctor or an integrated medicine doctor that will give you high dose (30 to 100g) of IV-vitamin C or H2O2. My son had toxic levels of mold VOCs, ochratoxin and trichothencenes. Must use C or HP because they will break up the biofilms that toxins (and microbes) are sequestered in... kinda like chelation treatments but C and HP is better than EDTA.

I have been doing the three that you mentioned and others for the last 5 years. The mold infection will just come back if you do not kill it at the source. I have been down that trail when my truck's A/C had a mold colony in it. I've had over 60 EDTA Chelations to clean out my blood vessels and heavy metals. We do HP I.V. to avoid the flu and colds. Vit C I.V. we do for just general good health and my current cancer situtation. =====RH========

Some of the known doctors who treat mold sickness in the U.S. are:

Dr. Michael Gray in Benson, AZ; Dr. Irene Grant in Tarrytown, NY; Dr. William Rea, an environmental doctor in Dallas, Texas; Dr. Janette Hope in Santa Barbara, CA; Dr. Mary Short-Ray, D.O. in Jacksonville, FL.

There is a website for Dr Mary Short-Ray called Toxic-Black-Mold-Syndrome. She also wrote a book called Surviving Toxic Black Mold Syndrome.

There is a website for Dr. Lisa Levine Nagy M.D. who recovered from a severe case of toxic mold syndrome called environmentalmedicineinfo.

Website for Dr. Irene Grant irenegrantmd.

Also a test we found to be helpful besides the Mycotoxin test from Realtime Labs was a Dark Field Microscopy test.

My family is sick from mold poisoning from a rented home we have lived in for over 5 years, the mold was hidden under the paneling and carpet in the basement. Long story, and not a good one.

We just went to NY to see Dr. Irene Grant, she is AMAZING and knows a lot. I would HIGHLY recommend her.

Over the last few years I have read tons and tons of posts regarding parasites and mold disease. I see Sorrokine's post is from seven years ago, but I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart. This is the most informative and uplifting post I've ever seen. I'm heading out for ammonia, (a couple cases), and will follow your herbal remedies to a "tea" ;). I hope you consider becoming a nutritionist. It's never too late.

Thanks to everyone for the info, and mostly for the good humor. When I get days as bad as today, I stay home from work, as I lose all sense of humor and feel like I want to belt somebody. My mother used to drink ACV (straight!) for various infections, and after reading all your testimonials, I decided maybe I'd try some for my respiratory problem. I am getting desperate, as no OTC or prescribed medications are helping. I've had a chronic, violent cough which sometimes results in vomiting, and almost always in loss of urinary control, caused from living in a toxic mold-infested apartment after Hurricane Ike (and this was one I moved to in order to get out of one that flooded). In short, I have been coughing since January of 2009. The doctors don't seem to want to think of my problem in terms of the mold exposure - not sure why they are resistant to that - so they've tried (unsuccessfully, but expensively) treating me with asthma and allergy medications. Today I got some N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) from the health food store, and am hoping that will give me some relief. Sleep would be nice, too. After reading many of your comments, I thought I should report that drinking ACV immediately caused me to BECOME congested, where I hadn't been before. It could be that it's not the thing to take for a mold infection (some hint of that on the mold forum, which I read AFTER I drank the ACV!). Thanks, better breathing, and best wishes to all.

Mold poisoning is serious and possibly will end in death. I have late stage two Mycotoxicosis which was from a contaminated building no outside ventilation. I had 18 months exposure. I was only 28. I was healthy before this. Started working there 05/08 3 months started the symptoms.

Surviving my almost death, I left job in 01/10 to try to live. Through careful studies I found this. I cured myself by finding that ammonia is the only known agent to kill mold and mycotoxins they leave behind including Candidas Albicanus. That's the worst part of Mold poisoning is when this yeast takes over from your digestive track. I have posted a remedy on this website explaining all the needed info, however, to give a short answer, and a website with my journey to healing, I will provide you with this.

Grapefruit seed extract, grape seed extract, Chlorophyll liquid or gelcap, Alfalfa Extract, Garlic and onion extract, Oregano, or oil of oregano (if oil 3 wks on 3 wks off harmful to liver if not done so), Milk Thistle, Dandelion, and Burdock root extracts. These combined together in a six hour regiment will cure you. I am living proof. Also if you are really overwhelmed with the sickness, taking a bath with an 8 ounce cup of ammonia will aid in removing the yeast and toxins from your body. Also ALWAYS wash all your clothing, sheets, towels and such in a cup of clear 3% ammonia (only use this kind of ammonia for all said treatments) in your cycle and spray out dryer with it as well. This will kill the toxins you ooze out from this sickness. If you continue to recontaminate your body you will never recover. I wish you well!

I live in South East Asia. It rains almost everyday. The walls of my house are always damp. Sometimes, our wardrobes would be covered with molds too. I would just wipe them away with dry cloth. But thank God none of us suffered from mold or fungal infections. I attribute this to our diet. I use onions, garlics, chillies, tumeric powder, tamarind juice and all other spices if necessary. I think these are the reasons why we are still healthy till today. Tumeric or tumeric powder is always used on skin rashes. Eucalyptus oil is also good on rashes and burns too, cos of its cooling and soothing effects on the skin which is immediate.

Shelly: Unfortunately, with mold illness/toxicity/exposure, the medical treatment regimen is very individualized depending on gender, genetics, exposure time and levels and mold type, and you haven't said anything about these.

Here is a generic reply given a month ago here. Look for my 12/31/2010 post 1/4 down the page:

The key site you want to visit is Dr. Shoemaker's newest one at the root URL

The specific area you want is under the "TREATMENT" tab, at:

His FIRST STEP is the most important by far! You will have to leave your moldy workplace or domicile immediately and permanently, since he claims that once exposure time reaches a certain length (again, highly individually specific), the mold toxin damage may be irreversible, even with the best current medical science.

If the patient feels fine with simple removal from exposure, no more steps are needed. There are a few people who are fixed with this step alone.

He uses cholestyramine, a Rx "old school" cholesterol-lowering drug that comes in a gritty powder, as the base of his treatment. It binds and holds, in the gut, the mold toxins that flood down into the gut with the bile after a meal! But for those so badly damaged that even the blood test markers are skewed, he uses all manner of other science, like Epogen the Amgen RBC regenerating drug (hormone), plus now many others.

IF you can print out some pages there, & IF you show some of his work to your PCP who sees the match in symptoms with yours, then perhaps you can get an "off-label" Rx for the cholestyramine right there without consulting with Dr. Shoemaker in the interim to get started on pulling out those mold toxins. The longer they circulate when unable to breakdown & excrete them, the more damage they do.

Finally some help I have not been made aware of. I live in south Orange County, Ca Severe mold poisoning. But as bowel is not functioning well enough to eliminate toxins that way due to thyroid not functioning properly, l I need an alternative. I am a little concerned about the ammonia though. Is there any risk? I am 65 and was in pretty good health prior. I certainly do not need any more problems. Would the ACV be just as good? The exposure caused a severe blood pressure rise and allergies to so many things. I have to be careful of a lot of herbs, etc. Really happy about the coconut water and chlorophil, etc. Many thanks. A lot of great ideas. I'll be trying, but will wait to hear more from you great people about ammonia. Also can you tell me what is the "6-hour regimen" mentioned by Sorrokine? Happy Holidays to all. Hi, I know exactly what you're going through; doctors here SUCK! Then I find they get high ALOT but went to medical school in Dominican Republic in the 1970s. That's like Med school in Port Au Prince right after the earthquake. I'm in the Hudson Valley. I went to Hahnemann Medical College in Philly until they closed our program overnight. Then went to Ivy League becoming epidemiology researcher. I am on day two of this Apple Cider Vinegar and my cough, which only hurts when I start to laugh; then I start coughing to point of passing out sometimes. My cat and I were exposed to black mold. We both breathe so loudly it wakes me up. You need to find a good pulmonologist /diagnostician and get proper tests and pulmonary function tests that take 45 to 90 minutes. This two big breaths into a plastic tube is a scam; it tells you NOTHING! I'm a professionally trained vocalist, former yoga practioner and athlete, so my lungs know endurance. My lung problems occur mostly at night or when laughing hard. Im changing insurance so Jan 2017 I'll be free to get better care. I hope this vinegar helps. Though its acid to drink, it's metabolised into a base which affects blood pH. We hope it works. Are you getting enough VitD? Best regards, Jaimie

I have been using a 1/2 tsp. daily of Bragg's ACV in my neti bottle to irrigate my sinuses for the last 6 months. I have known allergies to mold. Since nothing on your site cautioned people with this allergy NOT to use it, I thought it was safe. I am now dealing with the worst sinus infection/reaction I have EVER had in my life. My nose has completely shut down and I cannot breathe. It is scary and I cannot sleep. I cannot breathe out of my mouth for any length of time because when I swallow or it gets too dry I wake up. I have not slept for weeks and finally called the allergy doctor. The first thing they said was to STOP USING VINEGAR. I am very angry that there were no cautions about this either on your website or Braggs. I have also written to them. This ruins things for me every looking for alternative ways of dealing with chronic problems and doesn't say much for your information.

Michele, I'm sorry that you had such a bad reaction to the ACV in your neti pot - although it seemed a long time coming if you did if for six months before having problems. Maybe using 1/2 teaspoon of ACV daily as a sinus wash was too much - did you try a few drops first? Unfortunately, not every remedy works for everyone all of the time - just like anything else in life. Anything you do (or eat, for that matter, in the case of allergies) is your own responsibility. Please don't blame Earth Clinic or _____s - that's why companies have disclaimers . . . use at your own risk. I hope your problems resolve.

We moved out of our house and I had been taking the cholestyramine. For some reason my recovery seemed really slow. So I started taking more activated charcoal and chlorella. Then I accidently stumbled onto something that was miraculous. I began to notice I felt so much better! Then I realized about 10 days ago, I had started drinking 2 to 4 cans of coconut water daily that was made from fresh coconuts (NOT dried coconut since dried coconuts has mycotoxins in it and since mold creates mycotoxins dried coconut must be avoided) So I called the company to ask them about the coconut water and it was made from fresh coconuts. On the can is C20 this is 100% natural. Apparently, coconut is anti fungal, anti-viral and anti-parasitic, there is a long list of it's miraculous effects.

I read about this and they said don't remove the mold yourself, hire professionals. Since it is in your body you can use activated charcoal, from a health food store or pharmacy to help bind it. Hospitals use charcoal for poison and overdose cases. You can also desensitize your body with baking soda, follow directions on the box.

Johnelle: I live in the Dallas area too, and nearly died 5 times because of the toxic black/Aspergillosis/Pennicillian mold in the rental house about 15 months ago. For the past 8 months I have been obsessed with looking into the natural way to help myself and my family. I have had too many doctors not believe anything we tell them, 2 doctors tried to put me in the psych hospital, one doctor put me on Keppra that caused suicide and homicide issues, and it was the landlord's fault and no lawyers would help us, now I am disabled, epileptic, asthma, allergies etc... The most important thing I have found is liquid chlorophyll. I also take the basic vitamins abcdek, started sulfur, zeolite, selenium, and some mercola multi vitamins (just testing that one) I test every single month trying to find the right stuff to help my body. Each person behaves different, but I just keep trying. We had to move to an apartment, lost everything, lost 2 cats, and now I have learned how to never use chemicals in the house, eat organic/local foods. We are vegetarians now and try to stay away from process foods as much as we can. My kids got sick and my husband got sick, but they have been slowly getting better. Now if I am around any kind of mold (even small non toxic mold from food) my body will not stop shaking till I take kava kava. It is a nightmare to go through, please keep in touch with me I am always wanting to help or find out more information. I wish you luck.

It is important that you fix the mildew in your home as quickly as possible when you find it. Get someone to come out and assess the issue. It could just be a small patch of mold, but it might be growing in your wall and under the carpet too. Having somebody check it out will cost a personal loan, but you will get peace of mind knowing there aren't any problems.

I we had hidden black mold in our new new house and I began to get ill slowy first itchy eyes, tiredness, sinus issues, rash, nausea, dry heaves, dizziness , weight loss, stiff neck, tremors, heart palpitations, shortness of breath , blurred vision my brain was misfiring like it was on fire brain fog memory loss, and flu like feeling at this point I was totally home bound. It seemed like I saw a hundred doctors they had no idea of the cause. Two years later the wall cracked from water leak and the reason of my illness was made clear. I had black mold/mycotoxin exposure and inhalation illness. Most doctors do not know how to assess , test, or treat myctoxoins / black mold illness so if you suspect that you have this illness find a specialist . I have an MD that is an enviromental specialist. and another MD that knows how to treat mold illness. First thing both doctors told me was to MOVE OUT of the house we did. One MD subscribes to Dr Shoemaker's method of taking cholestyramine (3- 4x a day) which binds to the mold /mycotoxins and gathers it and takes it out of your body. I believe there is an alternative to Cholestyramine . Dr Shoemaker mentions some other things that are very effective being used in other countries but it is not used in the states, of course big pharma got the market cornered here

This is what I gathered from both of these medical doctors. One is get on a fungal free diet which I felt was pretty close to the SCD diet. Stop all sugar, grains, dairy, vinegars, cotton seed oils, hard cheeses, coffee, alcohol, peanuts and anything made from DRIED coconut oil. The list is longer you can look it up on the web. Nuts have mycotoxins on them and need to be treated before eating I just avoided them altogether. Take a high quality best probiotics take on an empty stomach for greater efficacy. The SCD diet has the method of making yogurt that was recommended that I use . This diet was imperative in healing the body. This diet is literally starving the mycotoxins of their food source so they die.

The was also given Gamma Detox FX the MD gave this to me is a very powerful detox formula with 50% zeolite laumontie, 50% calcium bentonite. A rare form of calcium based zeolites called laumonite, a form of zeolite for gentle and full body detox. Medi-Clay is a quantum-state, rare desert clay (calcium bentonite benonite clay zeolites) binding agent that carries all the toxins out of the body.

I was also given a few other natural things by my MD ZeoForce ( zeolite) , Mycotoxin inhibitor x20 , and ACZ nano extra strength this is activated cellular zeolite spray

Interesting when I got sick I had super low ferritin/iron and I was taking supplementS but iron was not building up. Ted on Earthclinic, nailed it he said fungus eats iron. When I started iron IV'S I had been on a fungal free diet so I know that I was getting the iron not feeding the mycotoxins.

Now here is the catch apparently cholestryamine has sugar in it. Please be aware of this fact , a good compounding he pharmacy can make it sugarfree.

The efficacy for Cholestyramine seems superior , to many other binding agents .

A couple other things is taking charcoal pills, and drinking 1/2 tsp baking soda in a glass of water daily helps kills fungus so does a couple drops of oregano oil in water kills fungus , Grapefruit seed extract is also great antifungal. Borax 1/8 tsp in a liter of water is helpful , you can also get the pellets in homepathic dept of the store

In order to not cross contaminate our new enviroment . We put everything in storage. Moved into all wood floor home. Since ammonia kills mycotoxins before moving I wore glove and eye goggles and we washed all of our clothes with ammonia and wiped out the dryer and washer with ammonia. That kills the myctoxins, I wiped down all our leather furniture, wood tables chair with ammonia and water and we tossed all fabric covered furniture pillow blankets

Mold/ mycotoxin poisoning disrupts many of the body processes /pathways. It can become very complicated , very quickly I think it is important to find a someone that is specialist that can slowly bring you entire body back into balance.

Be careful if you have pets in the home if you do some herbal bombs. It may be advised to mix w/ water in a spray bottle for topical application, but then again, household Ammonia cleaner would be best. And if the home or vehicle has been flood damaged, it would be almost necessary to do several days of Ozone shock while the place is vacated.

Because I've been homeless for 5 yrs because of severe chemical sensitivity & other extreme symptoms I had to consider mould. It is also one of my big allergants, amongst many many others. I tried cholestraymine for 2 mths. Mine had saccharine in it. But constipation was an even bigger problem than normal. So I thought I'd try charcoal. I've tried many enviro doctors but they are at a loss. Hope you are doing better. Vinegars - does this include acv? I have severe copper toxicity so coconut oil is a no go. But I can't find what can relieve the pain. I've known people wheel chair bound from mould. And someone who got better from cancidas IV daily - very expensive but she is now normal. No more living in a tent or in a car because you're allergic to all building materials. We can't get it in this country.

Precious Robyn: So sad you are dealing with so much! (Cyber hugs to you! ) And, sorry I am coming to this conversation so late!

Yes, stay away from apple cider vinegar, even the very best brand, as it is fermented! For me, after my very recent mold exposure, ACV was one of the things I was using to treat the symptoms (I broke out in a horrible case of hives---excruciating! ), totally unaware I was only feeding the problem!

I also can not eat naturally fermented sauerkraut, for the time being. That is really killing me, because I love the stuff! (And it was one of the things I purchased to help with the hives! ) Also, have to stay away from beer & wine, for the same reason.

I have done several things, including biofeedback (L.I.F.E. System), Bio-Electric resonance therapy & chiropractic. These 3, I feel, have been key for me. I feel the bio-electric resonance has done wonders for the mold issue. Another therapy, which I do not have access to currently, is RIFE treatments. Any of the better frequency-based treatments should prove beneficial, IMHO.

The bio-feedback session pinpointed some of the major contributing factors in my health crisis, including the fact that vinegar was excaberating the problem. (I can use distilled white vinegar with no problem. Use it in laundry & for household cleaning with no side-effects.)

Also, far-infrared will help. I used a friend's Bio-Mat and I feel that helped me as well.

I hope you can continue to explore ways to settle your body down, but I dare say that it is a daily challenge, since you have no place that is really 'home'. I am so hurt for you.....Hang tough.....Some of the best ways to heal our bodies do not cost all that much......And prayer does help, too......

Taking Chlorella is one of the best binders, and taking activated charcoal is another binder that my MD recommended to me. Along with Pectaclear detox. Cholestyramine is great, but I really prefer Chlorella since Chlorella is a natural binder .

I had a re-exposure to mold at a newer hotel we stayed at so I took a bath with a couple tablespoons of ammonia ... I did wear eye goggles while I soaked in the bath. This helps

I noticed now that so many places have water leak issues and /or mold so be mindful of hotels, restaurants, the work place, car, even going to old antiques stores or an old historical building can now trigger issues.

Kbugg, thanks for your thoughts. Would still like those that don't believe that someone would become so allergic they live in a car as a woman alone, in so much pain they can't get food. There are others.

These people are expressing their sadness and the facts. They're not just rants. Add another 8 yrs onto the woman crying with her mother for all her suffering for 13 yrs and she might not have any friends & family left, missed the boat for having her own family, some people cry for just that alone, & she might have become so allergic she has to live by herself in a car.I found where Ted has written about hydrocarbons; tiles and carpets so he believes it is possible you can't live around building materials and that the liver is compromised. Since I first read this years ago I have done and continue to all he has recommended + I have pages of other treatments which includes biofeedback, electrical regenesis, chiropractic. I am no better. The electrical made me much worse. I was probably too toxic. Anyway, to all those non believers I may have found a reason why I have such severe allergies, cell impermeability, unable to make atp, to digest proteins, carbs, fat, cannabilising body proteins, ammonia, xylene, metal poisoning, suffering liver, kidney, thyroid dysfunction, chronic infections, high ca, cu, inflammation & depression & such awful liver profile - I have almost no sodium, potassium and many minerals which were normal are now nil. Low sodium, potassium causes all these things.

You have to know what you're dealing with before you can try to get better.

I was very sick in 2005 from mold, arsenic and nickel. I got 70% well, but after doing my own stem cells in Dec of 2019, I got very sick 4 months later. I've lost 30 lbs of muscle with severe spinal pain and neurological issues. I've been terrified its invasive fungus but all docs say no.

I've been to Klinghardt and Simon Yu. I've spent 75,000 with no real improvement from docs. I soaked my mouth guard in Borax a few days ago and after wearing it yesterday, I feel way better. Borax tells you many things. Calcium out of balance, fungal issues, hormone out of balance and many other things. Borax releases calcium out of soft tissues. Calcium in soft tissues creates misery. Chanca piedra helps break stones up as they come out of soft tissue and I would use it daily. Xylitol also does wonders for mouth issues Go low dose and slow to keep misery from overwhelming you. William C,

While you are looking for a remedy for your spinal issue that is causing you significant pain, it may be worth discussing the use of a TENS unit with your doctor or medical care professional for the purpose of pain management until an adequate repair of your spine has been achieved by whatever remedies you attempt for spinal repair. Something like borax can take up to 3 or 4 months to reach its maximum potential for pain relief in arthritis according to Dr. Rex Newnham who founded the use of borax/boron as a potential treatment for some forms of arthritis.

I recently wrote about using TENS as a non invasive, non addictive and inexpensive approach to pain management here :

Best of luck with getting relief from your back pain, as it can make daily life miserable, I know from experience!

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey many people will have to deal with their flooded homes, many of which did not have flood insurance. The combination of high moisture levels in these homes combined with summer heat creates a very good breading environment for mold. An anti-mold treatment that is relatively safe, inexpensive and effective is a saturated solution of borax applied via a spray device such as a garden sprayer. Hydrogen peroxide can also be combined with the borax to help increase the anti-mold effect. Vinegar can also be combined with borax as an effective anti-mold agent. Vinegar mixed with hydrogen peroxide is a very powerful disinfectant, but is not nearly as safe to use as borax, borax with hydrogen peroxide or borax and vinegar. Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar creates peracetic acid which is too powerful a disinfectant to be used safely by most people and should be left to people who are experienced in the use of peracetic acid.

I have used a combination of borax and hydrogen peroxide in a spray to treat wood that had mold on it. Bleach will kill mold on the surface of wood and will bleach the mold color away but will not kill what is below the surface and is not anywhere as safe to use as the borax and hydrogen peroxide. This mix can also be useful to deter ants which appear to be a problem in some of the flooded areas.

Reconstruction should not start until the mold has been eradicated and proper safety and breathing apparatus should be worn whenever mold is present.

Our compound is 10 years old and has five floors, each level at one time or another has been ravaged by black mold. Water leaks from the roof and leaky plumbing in units has exasperated the problem along with no treatment for years. Ongoing employee illnesses are all the same as exposure to black mold symptoms. The top two floors are covered in black mold now and in our units mold creeps in. Wish I could attach a picture.

Will borax eliminate this type of severe mold issue? After a year of no response the company will now apply borax. The AC system is infected. I am really asking can this type of chronic mold infestation be addressed or is moving out the solution?

Please apply 3 coats of bleach (1/4 cup bleach powder in 1 quart water) on all the walls/ceilings/furniture/everything to kill the fungus. Then, scrape of the whole paint of the walls, ceilings. Re-paint with borax mixed in the paint.

Move out! Asap! If its in ur hvac then the mycotoxsin from the black mold have probably gotten in your belongings as well. Mycotoxsin are very dangerous to your health they are extremely toxic. I've been going through a similar situation. You need to read on black mold and its effects on ur health good luck.

Ok so Ted got back to me with an awesome reply on mold exposure chlorinated water causing hairloss, which I am greatful for... but I feel this is an important question that hasn't been asked on this site... I am about to be desensitized to mold via injections/drops under the tongue, but I am wondering if I start washing my hair with borax, and or injesting borax/clove oil/manganese/sodium ascorbate etc.. If it will have any effect on the desensitisation process?

Any reply would be greatly appreciated!

5 out of 5 stars

My daughter is a student and the house she shares is damp and full of fungus on the walls. Her room is the worst. When I went to pick her up for the Christmas holidays I took a plastic spray bottle of Borax and water (just put enough Borax in so that no more will dissolve). I sprayed the walls with it when I arrived and then wiped all the fungus off. After helping her pack I sprayed the walls again and just left them to dry. This was a last ditch attempt to make things better because the landlord would not do anything.

When I took her back after Christmas I didn't know what we would find but imagine my delight when we walked into her room to find not a trace of mould.

Thanks to all on this website who have written about Borax and how it kills fungus.

I hope this helps others in the same situation.

By the way, I live in the UK and it is impossible to buy Borax in any shop (even Boots). They are now selling something called 'Borax substitute' and no-one will give me a straight answer as to why they won't sell Borax. One assistant in Boots said that it was because old people used to put it in their eyes. Anyway, I eventually ordered a tiny amount from Amazon and to be honest you don't need a huge amount. Though one chemical company said they would sell it to my by the ton at a very good price.

Hi Angela - I spend a great deal of time trying to remember everything I read on this fab site. I too live in a building in Cheltenham (gound floor) which suffers from damp. I run a de-humidifier which soon soaks up 6-7 pints of water in about two or three days. I always suspect my clothes may pong of damp (although nobody else confirms it!). Another posting has suggested that inhaling the spores can cause all sorts of health problems, so Im really interested in your Borax suggestion.... so can you tell me where I can get some in the Cheltenham area. Thanks. Bev

Check out the ingredients in eye wash.
Borax is in it.
Thank God for old people who know natural remedies.
They most likely don't sale borax because they would rather have you buy something far more expensive.
