I first noticed evidence of Grover's disease in 2011 with spreading lesions on my torso both back and front. Visits to dermatologists in London and New York including biopsies confirmed that the lesions were caused by Grover's Disease which I was told was incurable. However, I noticed that the symptoms were far less noticeable in the summer months and guessed that sunshine and therefore Vitamin D may be effective. In 2012, I started to take 4 x Vitamin D3 (Potency 10ug = 10 micrograms equivalent to 400 IU = 400 International Units) per day.

I immediately noticed an improvement to such an extent that after some months the symptoms and the scars had completely healed. I then experimented by coming off Vitamin D3 in the summer of 2012 but after some weeks the symptoms returned. I then stayed on Vitamin D3 for six or seven months over the winter of 2012/2013 and once again the symptoms disappeared following which I stopped taking Vitamin D3 for approximately eight months with no further symptoms. However, as I write this in February 2014 the symptoms have once again returned and I have therefore re-started the Vitamin D3 which once again has suppressed the symptoms.

The conclusion to my experience is that if not a cure, Vitamin D3 in the dose that I have used is a highly effective way of treating this unpleasant and irritating disease. I hope this works for you.

Hi Timothy,

Can I just check your dosage of Vit D3? Is it a total of 400IU, or is it 4 x 400IU? I'm expecting it to be be the latter, but just thought I should check.

cheers

I was diagnosed with Grover's by biopsy in Dec 2015. Symptoms began in 2013. I had itchy red spots on lower legs. In mid 2015 I started to feel itchy but I could ignore it. In the fall I figured it was allergies. It progressed in the winter which was when I had the biopsy. I was also very stressed. I took benadryl every day from Late Dec thru April. I decided that was not good for me.

I continue putting emollient creams on my skin, I eat healthy, I don't drink alcohol, I take vitamins, during the past week I increased vit d from 1000 iu to 3000. My scalp, arms, legs, back, face, stomach, are all affected. It seems worse before seeing the red dots. The itchiness is always with me. I've tried cortisone creams, neosporine, vicks, etc. I get most relief when putting on rich Eucerine cream then by adding Alocane. Still itchy but tolerable!! I also stay in AC. Heat and sweating make it worse! It's hard to work out during summer months. I am able to walk indoors with AC most of the time. Any other tips? I wish it would go away.

Grover's Disease - Hydration!

Drink much more water and keep hydrated the itchy areas until the inner hydration kicks in. I was diagnosed, tried everything and end up with this simple recipe. Now if a papule pops up, "Geez not enough water?" And grab a glass or two or three. Basically until it is gone.

At first, give it a few days and the 15 to 30 minutes. I think we become more susceptible to contaminants, processed food, pills, and they all increase our water (and fruits and veggie) demand.

Grover's Rash

Witch Hazel stops the itching and fades the rash almost completely. I just put some on a clean cloth and thoroughly wipe the rash down with it, at the first sign of the itching starting back up I use it again.

I was diagnosed with Grovers last September. I'm 67 and have never had any skin issues, I'm in great shape but I was very stressed for months when this Disease hit me.

I've tried all the cortisone creams and they have been useless. I tried Chinese medicine, brewing a prescription of dried herbs and roots from an herbalist who cured my fibroids 20 years ago, but gave up after two months of that. My dermatologist tried antibiotics and Zyrtec, but didn't help. It's progressed from my back to stomach to one leg and two shoulders and forearms. It is really uncomfortable, unsightly, and ruins my quality of life.

My doctor injected me with Dupixent last week and it worked for a day. I'll try another injection in a week. It costs $3300, but my health insurance covers it. Has anyone had Grovers go to their face? Or privates? I'm dreading that. I tried the zinc oxide and that seems to have stopped the itch as of today. Thank you, bloggers who suggested that. And, I made my first cilantro smoothie, which tastes great. I am praying this goes away and never comes back. Has that happened to anyone? Why can't they find a cause and a cure for this awful disease?

Robo,

1st of all thx for sharing. Like you I'm in my 60's. I was diagnosed with Grover's 10 years ago. It is all over my back and on about 1/3 of my stomach. So back and front of core truck is 95% of where it appears. The other 5 to 10% of I I have isolated spots. Primarily on the high part of my thighs and a few around my belt line. But never ever on or near my privates nor ever on my face or neck. It's appeared but isolated on the collar bone part closest to my neck. But again never on face or privates by me or anyone I've heard comment. So think you're good there. You said forearms however...I have never had it there. So that was the only unique location comment of yours. I have heard everyone fails with what doctor prescriptions of any kind myself included.

I started the cilantro about 10 days ago. I love the taste and the other benefits (see my very recent post in the cilantro section of this forum.) So far no change. I will continue the cilantro routine forever regardless. Two days ago, I started the zinc oxide cream (16% active ingredient--Zinc oxide). It diaper cream. Covers it up nicely but almost is irritating the papules. So the 48 hour result for me is "not" working. I've heard others have miracles. So that's why I tried it. As I said in my other post, I do plan to comment back on here and let you know how it goes. I would hope you'd do the same. They say we have an "orphan" disease. So don't be a stranger. You and everyone's posts are helpful.

Kind regards, Robert from Chicago.

I have had Grovers for 8 years. It comes and goes. Mine is on my right leg, on the back and inner thigh. I just want to peel my skin off when it is flaring up.

Terri & Veronica, I have read all these "miracle stories" of zinc oxide cream. Thought I had the miracle too when I woke up and it was gone. Problem is, it was NOT gone. It was just merely hidden by the zinc oxide but when you washed it off, there is was again.

I will continue to try but no miracle yet for me.

Zinc Oxide 1000% definitely works. I am a 50 year old female and had Grovers rash on chest and stomach for about 6 months. I tried so many things (tea tree, antispectic cream, prescription cream) and nothing made any difference. After reading this page I tried zinc oxide and within 24 hours it is 90% better. Thanks to all who shared this info.

I have also just gotten a new flare up of "Grovers" and is getting worse with my workouts. The doctor prescribed a steroid cream to be used for 2 weeks. Was not seeing much difference. Did some investigating on this website and others and decided to try a different approach. Applied Triple Antibiotic on the spots and covered with Zinc Oxide..in 24 hours already see an improvement. Itching has decreased, spots not red and not as raised. Will also supplement with Vitamin A as I have read this is critical as well.

Will keep all posted over the next week or so of this :).

I have suffered from Grover's Disease on and off for years. I have recently found a remedy that stops it in it's tracks. ZINC OXIDE. I used the cream for diaper rash, and it immediately stopped the itch and was drastically improved by the next morning and gone within a couple of days. I cannot understand how the medical field does not know this. Please try it and I pray for you that it works as well!

Grover's Disease:

I purchased a Diaper Rash Cream with zinc oxide yesterday and rubbed it on my affected areas. When I woke up this morning, the rash is almost gone. I would recommend this.

I am a 36-year-old woman and was diagnosed with Grover's Disease after seeing 5 different doctors and having two biopsies. It began at the end of December and it's now the end of May and I'm just now healing completely.

When I saw the dermatologist who finally diagnosed me, I was at the end of my rope. The rash was all over my back, neck, and chest, and speckled on my hips, legs, arms--well, it was pretty much everywhere. It was burning and itching and I just wanted to peel my skin off. When the biopsy came back, I was so happy to have an answer but disheartened to know that there is no real cure. The doctor told me to take 10,000 iu of vitamin A and a vitamin E capsule every day, to keep the rash well hydrated with cetaphil cream, and to see him in 6 weeks.

Initially, this regimen did help a bit, as the itching went away almost instantaneously. However, after the bumps remained so I began to research other treatments and found the boards here at Earth Clinic to be the most helpful. I began taking many supplements in addition to the A and E, including garlic pills, copper, zinc, D, and a probiotic. I also began drinking bentonite clay and eating a lot of cilantro to do a heavy metal cleanse. During the time, I've been off of gluten and alcohol as well. At night, I would break open 3-4 vitamin A capsules and mix them with vitamin E oil I got at the pharmacy, and cover my rash in it. In areas that were prone to sweat, like my chest and neck, I would put a medicated powder that contained zinc.

The rash was improving, but very slowly. I had to stop taking the zinc tablets because I kept throwing them up when they interacted with the copper. My face began to break out terribly, and I realized that I was probably just putting too many supplements in my body, so I decided to strip it down to the bare minimum: A, E, and garlic, along with the clay and cilantro.

The rash was still there, but slowly improving. I discovered by accident that the zinc was the thing that was helping. On Mother's Day, I wanted to wear a dress but my back was covered in red spots, so I decided to try covering it up with a thick makeup I have: Dr. Jart Dis-A-Pore. It covered beautifully and I had the confidence to go out in public without worrying that people were staring at my back and shoulders, even though the texture was still very bumpy. I left it on for a couple of days and when I finally washed it off, I realized that many of the bumps had healed completely. I looked at the ingredients of the makeup, and Zinc Oxide was one them, which got me to thinking...

I went to Costco and bought two double packs of Honest Company's Mineral Sunscreen, which is 19% zinc oxide and have been covering my body in it since Saturday. Today is Tuesday, and I am happy to say that the bumps on my back are pretty much non-existent now and all the others are healing up very quickly. I also added the zinc supplements back into my diet, but am sure to take them on a full stomach with no copper. I have still been taking the clay and cilantro as well, but I really feel like the zinc was the thing that made the biggest difference. The results were dramatic, and practically came overnight.

Again, yes, I have tried many different supplements and therapies, but I honest to God feel zinc is the thing making the most difference. This whole experience has been such a nightmare, I wanted to share my findings here in case I could help one other person avoid the suffering I went through. I'm looking forward to seeing my dermatologist soon and reporting my findings and I can only hope that he takes me seriously enough to help his other patients.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Grovers Disease by a dermalogogist in Vienam (USA doctor) he did not explain the implications of the anti-biotics he subscribed to me, the RARE side effects being light sensitivity. This being me I did exhibit! He sunscribed several differant tablets & creams. None of them worked, I bought babies nappy rash talcum powder (Contains ZnO-Zinc Oxide) also read about GARLIC tablets, so bought them.

Within several weeks applying baby nappy rash powder and taking a 1000mg tablet of odourless garlic the rash had gone. I thought this strange so stopped taking tabs and using powder for a few days. GROVERS reappeared! Restarted using the powder and taking the tabs and GROVERS went away again!

I do not know if this will work for all suffers but it did work for me, don't know why it works, Zinc Oxide is good for all basic skin problems but how it works on GROVERS I have no idea!

Both treatments do not cause any harmful effects, the woese that cam happen is you develope an allergy to GARLIC!

It has been 4 months sonce the last signs of this terrible disease and I am glad this treatment worked for me!

Hi, when and how often do you apply the nappy rash powder? Are you still taking that tablets and having rash free skin?

I read about how baby powder with zinc oxide and 1000 mg of garlic pills helps with Grover's disease. When do you start to see results? How long does it take for the rash to completely go away? Is there any particulars on how and when to take this remedy? Is there a specific nappy baby powder to be used? Thanks!

Oh yes, this is the rest of my story. I read that Mayo clinic has linked Grover's to too much mercury in your system. So I ate garlic as my regular snack. I am now going to be tested by Quicksilver Labs with a new test for mercury. This might be why the garlic pills work. After I get the test results, I am going to a specially trained dentist to have my mercury fillings removed. I now understand your dentist has to be specially trained to remove mercury fillings from your mouth. Be sure to check this info out before you have any fillings removed.

Lawyers are filing class action lawsuits against sellers of talcum powder such as Johnson & Johnson. You may wish to research the reason for this, before going overboard with talcum powder use.
