Bitters

Hi All: I'm from the island of Trinidad in the West Indies. Since I was a child, one of the standard remedies for alimentary disturbances - belly aches, gas etc. - has been a few dashes of Angostura bitters (AB) in a little cool water. AB is made only in Trinidad but is famous worldwide as a beverage taste enhancer. However, it was originally developed by a famous German doctor to treat his wartime patients for alimentary disturbances. Locally it is still used for same especially by "olden" folk. You can look it up yourself on the net. Regards

I was woken up by extreme stomach and even back pain due to gas. I just drank the baking soda (1/2 teapoon) and water (1/2 cup) maybe 5 minutes ago and I already feel 75% better!!! Thank you sooooo much. I remember my grandfather drinking the mix every night when I was a child. Now I know why!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have a high pain tolerance but this pain from gas was unbearable. I took about 1.5 tsps baking soda in water and I am so much better. I now completely understand why people show up in the ER when they don't know the pain is caused by gas.

I searched out this website by googling gas in upper back.

I ate spaghetti with tomato sauce two days in a row and both times I got sever pains in my upper back and I remember my mom and sister talking about gas in the back years ago, so right away I knew what was happening, I tried stretching and laying on objects to move the pain, and it helped for a second but the pain came right back. I decided to put 1 tsp of baking soda in an 8oz glass of warm water and it helped me to burp and it immediately took the pain away.

It is a miracle and I will make sure I always have it in my refrigerator. I use Apple Cider vinegar in some of my recipes and have always heard it is a good remedy for different ailments so I will start drinking it as needed after this last episode.

Thanks for all the information from this site. Natural is the way. Thanks so much!

It is baking powder that has the aluminum in it, not baking soda! But even baking powders today are leaving it out.

Peppermint Tea

I keep Peppermint oil in water near me at all times. Recently I was experiencing some severe flatulence. I reached for some peppermint water and took a swig and the gas immediately stopped. I found it extraordinarily effective. I recommend it!

Gripe Water was immediate relief for chronic belching/gas. I saw that reference in your 'remedies'. I put three droppers' full into any beverage after I've eaten anything. Thank you to the person(s) who recommended this. I found it in Walgreen's baby aisle.

Anise Seeds
Posted by Elaine (Valencia, Ca) on 01/16/2018

While I have no direct experience with anise seeds for gas or anything else, it is never a good idea to give any remedy to a one month old without first obtaining permission from a competent pediatrician. Many things that pose no problems for adults could be dangerous when ingested by an infant.

Oregano Oil

Hi, I'd like to add Oil of Oregano as an amazing remedy for smelly gas. I had tried everything - digestive enzymes, probiotics, betaine (HCL acid), garlic and nothing really worked that well. Or they worked for a while but then stopped working. Now I take a capsule of oil of oregano twice a day with meals. More if I eat a dessert. I've been doing this for over a year and I now rarely have gas. It's truly amazing. But, it may not work on its own - you may need other supplements/diet changes.

Sodium Bicarb instantly took away the pain from bloating caused by gas.It really works. After trying several things and feeling so nauseous with pain, I finally tried taking 1 tsp of baking soda with hot water. Within minutes it took the pain away. It taste really awful, but works like magic.

RE: Cure Gas Fast Angostura bitters remedy... I'm a night club dj. On several occasions I've gotten terrible stomach pain just before a gig at a bar. When I say terrible stomach pain, I mean eye watering, agonizing pain that comes in waves. Sometimes it feels like my stomach is in a knot and other times like it's being ripped apart. I've asked bartenders what I should drink. A few have suggested bitters. I'm not sure if this is the same as Angostura bitters, but it's the only thing I remember working. Generally after drinking something with bitters, my pain goes away in an hour or so. Without the bitters, I'm in pain all night and sometimes for a day or two after.

I had such terrible gas for 2 weeks straight I couldn't stand myself. I finally humbled myself and asked my midwife what to do and she said to take acidophilous. It worked awesome.

Took me a year to figure out that corn syrup causes me gas. I finally pinned my gas down to granola bars. Turns out they have corn syrup. Similar granola bars with sugar do not give me gas.

Get rid of corn syrup and get rid of gas!

Homemade Apple Juice

Given a few bags of apples, I decided to make some fresh apple juice using my juicer machine. It takes a little work straining them a few times to get rid of all the extra matter that comes along. But definitely well worth it. One night, awakened by stomach gases, running from the bed to the bath (I think you know what happened), I had to miss a day of work. The next morning still feeling horrible, I drank a glass of the juice. Immediately, I felt better. It cured my nausea and helped release all the gases and toxins in my system.

I started to take charcoal after reading about it on here. It is wonderful for bloating and gas. Helps every time. I take 2 capsules. If I do not get enough relief I take 2 more 2 hours after first dose. Do not take with other meds or supplements. Thank you earth clinic!!

Swedish Bitters

Swedish bitters have, in my experience, been unbeatable for the relief of bloating, gas and constipation.

The intial recipe for bitters was attributed to Paracelsus in the 15th century. It was then revived by Jonathan Samst in the 18th century and later made popular by Maria Treben.

The Swedish Bitters elixir's benefits are numerous. It promotes biliary, pancreatic and gastric secretion, disinfects the intestinal track, relieves bloating, flatulence, cramps and nausea, encourages toxin elimination and is a gentle laxative. A teaspoon in the morning and evening diluted in water greatly improved my digestive health following a long episode of bloating.

Baking Soda

I always use about a teaspoon of Baking Soda dissolved in about 1/4 cup of warm water, for heartburn/too much stomach acid. It works immediately unlike Rolaids, etc and is not only cheap but usually readily available at home.

I brush my teeth with it too. I first put toothpaste on the brush and dip it in a small plastic container I keep in my bathroom. It removes plaque instantly and helps to keep my breath fresher.

I sprinkle about 1/2 a cup each week on top of the cat litter in the cat box to keep it from smelling. It works great in humid or rainy weather.

Baking Soda

As I'm writing this I can feel my stomach bubble from the baking soda. I also took two mild charcoal tablets and I'm sipping on tea. I've only gotten this sort of pain twice in my life, the last time it felt like I had a baby inside me trying to rip its way out. That was intense. I went to the hospital as I was really worried - they couldn't do anything as the beds were full and told me to wait! I eventually got better after originally taking 5 pills of two different pain killers, but jeez I wish they gave me reassurance that it was wind!

Nonetheless, with my story told, don't sit around wallowing in pain like I did for the las half hour. Get off your bum and make some herbal tea, scull some baking soda mixture, and invest in some charcoal tablets.
