Natural Treatment for Epilepsy

Cysticercosis

Posted by Frank (NY, NY) on 08/22/2009

Interesting causes of seizures on this thread. Another condition that can cause seizures is cysticercosis, an infection from ingestion of tapeworm larvae.

From the CDC website:

"Neurocysticercosis (cysticerci in the brain, spinal cord):

Symptoms of neurocysticercosis depend upon where and how many cysticerci (often called lesions) are found in the brain. Seizures, and headaches are the most common symptoms. However, confusion, lack of attention to people and surroundings, difficulty with balance, swelling of the brain (called hydrocephalus) may also occur. Death can occur suddenly with heavy infections.

Dietary Changes, Bio-Identical Hormones

We have done a lot of different things to recover my daughter from her seizure activity, and she is now 95% seizure free. Dietary changes that removed her triggers were key, along with optimizing her vitamins and minerals. She also uses natural bio-identical progesterone for her catamenial seizures, and has had great success with that as well.

Dietary Changes, Challenging the Brain

Now I have moved from America to Indoniesa, I found that all natural foods I can eat lower the time of the seizures, and staying happy and organized, making the brain operate in high levels of thinking process, because seizures cause the brain to run in high speed so use this quality for life, it causes process of info much faster then the normal human, so use it and this will lower the levels of seizures and I believe it will cause your child to stop seizures. I am 53 and my seizures have almost gone, just from increasing the amount of info I make myself process, force it to work harder and soon you will see how fast your brain will operate at high speed, much faster then normal,, it works for me < but eat much natural foods only , no processed foods, of any kind and low on sugars, force your brain and body to work much hard, and you will see it likes it, and it will love this, it's like a food for the brain, read on foods for the brain, this is how I found and what I am doing now.

my wife suffered seizures before we were married and has now been seizure free for 13 years of marriage. well she did stop the aspertame but I can't say if that is what made the difference as she stopped eating a ton of other junk as well. I follow an 85% raw fruits and veggies diet with no refined sugars or carbs and she just started to eat with me reluctantly at first and wala. if this story seems hard to believe just think, I left out the long list of chronic illness that went away from her body and mine like bad dreams. check out the haleluya diet.

Eliminate Mercury

A friend started having seizures as an adult and couldn't understand why. All the scans and tests came up negative. He was put on medication but it just gave him bad side effects and didn't really help so he stopped taking them. Then he was sitting in a theatre eating thick taffy candies when he felt something happen on one of his back teeth but it was so fast he swallowed it. Turns out a candy had stuck to a loose mercury filling and pulled it off his tooth. He figures he pooped it out because after that all his seizures and mental issues went away.

Eliminate Wheat, B Vitamins

I recently brought my son to Portland Family Homeopathy in Portland, Oregon. He's had seizures for the whole first year of his life. Sometimes hundreds at a time. We were given a pretty bad diagnosis from a neurologist who wanted to put him on all sorts of meds. I asked her if there had ever been research about the long term developmental side effects of giving these meds to babies... She said no. So we chose to try to find other treatment options.

A friend of mine had recommended that I try Portland Family Homeopathy and so I did. We went and were given some really basic dietary information about what is good and bad for kids with seizures. Since we've cut out wheat and been giving him vitamin B supplements daily, he has been seizure free for 6 months now. Sometimes the answer is so simple.

Epilepsy Protocol

I suffered with mild epilepsy for 14 years, only ever had 20 seizures before being medicated. I am depending upon tegretol but never really feeling myself, I could write pages on pages on how I figured out how to fix my epilepsy and my passion behind getting off the medication that I later found out was making the epilepsy worse when I was not depending on it. Anyways I am not trying to sell anything nor am I saying it will work for everyone.

I am only posting this because I wish I had have found this out 14 years ago and if I could help anyone that is going through it that is all I want, but here it is straight up:

*Vitamin b6 200mg twice a day ( whatever your body doesn't use , you pee out)

*vitamin d3 every second day (tegretol depletes your vitamin d levels ..)

* magnesium complete 1 tab per day

* 5-htp natural amino acid 1 capsule per day

*excercise at least half hour a day to boost positive hormones

* the main thing is: meditation!

Gain control of your own mind through letting go and you will be able to control anything; this being said I understand many people won't try it as it has been portrayed to be "alternative " and "hippie " and even I laughed when I heard about it for the first time, but not a word of a lie it works for me. * I also eat a healthy natural diet and use fluoride free tooth paste, as fluoride is a neuro-toxin which can not help things .and I try to avoid things with chemicals when I can help it . Don't get lazy, be strict with it, make time to meditate. I would like to add that I have been seizure free for 4 years now with no medication. It was scary at first and I failed twice only to learn that I did need to supplement as majority of the problem is just being deficient in b6 , magnesium , serotonin , and vitamin d3. I hope this helps someone or their parents who are desperately searching for answers to something that until recently they knew nothing about, or someone looking for answers that no one will post anywhere on the net.

Hi, just in regard to your article about the use of 'meditation' ... I have temporal lobe epilepsy and was advised by my Neurologist that meditation could be more harmful to someone with this condition due to our hyper active minds, it could be hard to silence our mind? He suggested using repetitive tasks, like walking, writing etc or any task that involves using methods which assist the body, to become more 'grounded' Long story, but finding a 'meditation with movement' seems to work for me ... ex: I study a lot of philosophy and I have read that 'Einstein recommended that (for a man) ~ early morning shaving was a great way to focus the mind at the beginning of the day ...

I had a breakthrough seizure at 3am after starting on epsom salts a little over a month ago...I take tegretol twice daily. Is there a bad interaction btwn epsom salts and tegretol per chance?...from what I keep reading epsom salts are supposed to be the cure all for seizures and that doesnt seem to be the case in my situation...I was seizure free via tegretol until I started on epsom salt...what are your thoughts?

Someone in my family developed grand mal seizures just over a year ago at the age of 52. He had 4 big seizures within a 6 month period, lost part of his memory & he refused to take any form of meds. I read here on EC about Epsom salt and I immediately bought food grade Epsom salt. He takes half teaspoon in the morning & same in the evening with pure orange juice. We also had to cut out on food additives & went on natural food.

It's now 8 months of seizure free & we thank God & EC for this forum. It will take a while for the body to rid the toxins so don't give up. Epsom salt is natural and has no side effects.

I hope this post will help someone & save lives.

How much Epsom salt should be added to the bath? My son has had seizures since he was 12 or 13, we have only tried medication (Tegretol) and at one point he would be seizure free for close to a year he is now 24 and they are more frequent, maybe 3 times a month, I'm going to try most of what I've read from others on this site. Can't be any worse than what we are already experiencing.

Thanks everyone, God Bless you all.

T.He most common trigger for seizures is the neurotoxic substances used as favor enhancers in food.. msg, aspartame and the worst, modified food starch are all neurotoxins which excite the neurons in the brain literally to death. Dr Russel Blaylock has studied these substances and labels them excitotoxins. He has found that aside from giving seizures, many forms of cancer and migraine from hell that these neurotoxic substances literally kill neurons in the brain.

Cancer researchers are astounded at the speed of growth and ferocity exhibited by cancer cells when exposed to these neurotoxic chemicals.

Msg, modified food starch and aspartame cause cancer cells to grow pseudopodia octopus like tentacles which they use to invade nearby tissue when they wish to become more aggressive and metastatic..

Brain tumor has a potential of inducing seizures and these chemicals encourage cancer growth and development..

These same chemicals help to induce seizures therefore restricting the diet of all forms of free glutamic acid is the best starting point to control seizures Read the writings of Dr Russel Blaylock about these dangerous neurotoxins.

Here is another good article for you about diet and how to control seizures naturally

My son 23 and has been having seizures since he was 1year old. He ran out of one of his meds and could not get it until today. He started having seizures back to back all night and I found this article and decided to try the Epsom salt and I am happy to say after giving him the Epsom salt mixed with orange juice he has not had one seizure since 8:00 this morning. Thank you!

I think I'm on to something regarding magnesium for seizure control. Before you spend a fortune like I did on Liquid magnesium, transdermal magnesium and Magnesium oxide supplements, try this...

Buy a small quantity of Epsom Salt from the drugstore. In a coffee mug, crush it into a very, very fine powder. Stir 1/2 to one teaspoon of the powder into a small sip of orange juice, open your mouth wide and swallow, being careful not to leave any magnesium granules at the bottom of the glass. My seizures are cured. DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR SEIZURE MEDICATION UNTIL YOU HAVE DONE THIS SUCCESSFULLY FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR AND EVEN THEN TAPER OFF OF IT SLOWLY WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN'S ADVICE!

My father has a had severe night time seizures (not often) for a few years now that have become more frequent lately, we have gone to a neurologists and he is now on anti seizure medicine, Keppra - which he has had a severe reaction to including depression, suicidal thoughts and behavioral changes- needless to say they are changing his medication - now to Valproic Acid which we are concerned about as well. We would love to go with a natural remedy and get him off of all of these horrible medications. He is now also on Xanax which is making him act a little nuts, just trying to control his mood while weaning him off Keppra. This behavior is way out of the ordinary for him, he is normally a happy, smart, strong hard working man. He is now emotional, and miserable. I have read some amazing stuff about epsom salts and other remedies but there is a lot to narrow down in a hurry.

We are looking for a list and amounts of "must haves" for seizure treatment, in hopes of getting him off of all this horrible stuff quickly and as easily as possible. He has been on these anti-seizure meds for such a short period of time we hope to transition off of the quickly if possible. Right now he says he would rather live with seizures and forget the medications. Oh just FYI, he is a welder and has been exposed to heavy metals like manganese since the age of 13. Thanks for your help and information.

You need to find someone experience enough to help you detox your dad. There are many things today that can cause individuals to have seizures. Besides detox, diet and proper hydration with no doubt improve your dads situation. I know from personal experience. If you can't find anyone to help you in your area, Please send me an email an I maybe be able to point you in the right direction. Steve

Question for Steve... I live in San Antonio and I have a 3 yr old who's been on epileptic medicine for 2 yrs. He's been through 4 surgeries and is not seizure free. We're trying to find the right medicine and right dosage for him. I hate the way the medicines make him feel. I've been wanting to treat him the holistic way but I'm not sure how to or what to give him?? If you can refer a holistic doctor to me I would greatly appreciate it. He has simple complex seizures, he also had a tumor removed (which we though was causing them), but he's still having seizures.

Veronica, it would be a good idea if you read Linus Pauling's book "How to live longer and feel better". I could tell you what he says but it is maybe better to get the whole picture. He talks about children who had seizures and how they were treated with vitamins and minerals. A very interesting book by one of the greatest minds of the 20th century. When I finish I will post a review here. I hope this will help your son without the side effects.

Veronica, sorry to hear about your little boy. Please read the attached article. It is about someone recently diagnosed with epilepsy. They found out that she was hugely deficient in magnesium and something simple as magnesium (in large doses) was enough to get her off her medication.

Also the article says that anti-epileptic medication can deplete your vitamin E stores.

Has your son had blood tests for his magnesium levels? I would also now check his vitamin E levels.

You could also bathe him in epson salts (magesium).

Hope this is of some help.

Just a fyi, Patricia Murphy died a few years ago, 2008 I think, she was 55 approx. A seizure played a part in her death, whether it was SUDEP or an accident I don't know, its quite hard to get info on the net about it. I have her book and I think its great and I think she was a pioneer, there's lots of great info in it. I suppose whether we're on meds or using natural seizure control the possibility for breakthrough seizures is always there. People could easily use this death to dismiss the naturopathic model of epilepsy treatment (I think thats why there is such little info on her death), I don't, I think she did what was best for her and for a quality of life she could live with. There's no point in living a long life half asleep on meds, perhaps without adequate seizure control, when we can strive towards and hope for, a long life of quality, may she rest in peace.
