Natural Remedies for Diverticulitis Relief: Safe & Effective

Aloe Vera Juice

Diverticulitis: Been doing the Aloe Vera juice, but never thought about adding papaya. My first bout with diverticulitis happened after I gorged on raspberries from my back yard. After waiting all summer, they seemed to ripen overnight, and I indulged a little too much. After 7 weeks of anti-biotics and still in pain, the Dr. suggested surgery. I went straight to the internet for alternative remedies and found Aloe Vera juice listed. That was 6 years ago. Now, when I feel a twinge, I hit the juice!

Seeds do not CAUSE diverticulitis. A low fiber diet can cause it to develop. Once you have the condition, you need to eliminate things like seeds from your diet as they will cause a flare-up, because they get caught in the pockets in the colon which causes inflammation and pain.

Having grown up on game meats, lots of elk, I want to point out that any lean meat especially dried, can constipate unless you get plenty of fat elsewhere, which is one reason native peoples like pemmican vs jerk. Add the large amounts of almonds certainly made matters worse. If liquids were low, that would make it worse still. I have done similar over the years and didn't realize the grip-gut I experienced was the start of diverticulitis. I now do the aloe vera juice, lots of mineral water, & slippery elm bark tablets to keep a healthy colon.

Hi, I am extremely interested in finding out where can somebody buy the GSE oil? I live in San Diego and I've tried different places. I found the pills but I've been told that the oil is for cooking, so is there a specific place where I can get it, or is it really the cooking oil the one you mention? Also, If I got the pills can I start taking them daily and how many instead of the oil? Please reply, I am desperate trying to help my boyfriend with his diverticulitis problem. Thank you.

Where to buy GSE (GRAPEFRUIT Seed Extract): 1) You can purchase it on the Internet. 2) Whole Foods carries it. 3) Some non-chain Health Food Stores carry it. I have never found it at a chain health food store. If your hometown healthfood store does not carry it, just order it off the internet.

I would love to know how your mother is doing with her diverticulitis now that it's been some time. Is the GSE still working for her? I'm having a light bout of it now. I've had to take the antibiotics 6 times since 2009. They are rough and I'm wondering if the GSE is a longer term way to beat diverticulitis flare ups. Wishing your mother well, Patrick T.

Good morning and thank you for your post on this nasty disease. I pray all is still well for you!

Unfortunately, my mother-in-law is in the hospital as we speak having already gone through the medical world's surgical process. However, having seen her pain etc., I want to make sure we are well armed to prevent any such attack on other family members. Would be so grateful if you could advise on what you did.

It is more likely that Psyllium & Bentonite clay stired up your current condition of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or even Demodex mites (parasites) both of which have been shown to cause Rosacea & Rhinophyma! Taking those 2 herbs WITHOUT combining them with an anti-parasite program or herbal "peristalsis" tonics will agravate diverticulitis in many people. Some people do have an allergy to these herbs but the allergy will subside after taking them. In your case it did not! As you claim they ruined your life? Did you self prescribe or did you consult a trained health professional? A Chinese herbal doctor can help with this problem! Both Rosacea & Rhinophyma are treatable with Diet changes & Chinese herbal medicine!

Diverticulitis

Having a flare up. I had two days worth of Levoflaxin and several days of Metronozole leftover from last bout. The Metro makes me dizzy and I already have vertigo, so I only take it twice daily instead of three times. I added aloe capsules, slippery elm, Irish Moss and Oregano oil. My doc office hasn't called back with more antibiotics, and I really don't want to go that route so I'm good at this point.

One question I have is that I recently started eating walnuts for anti-parasite properties. Is there a liquid form of walnuts? Nuts do not generally cause me gut issues. I eat Brazil nuts most days, but when I'm in an active flareup, I try to avoid.

I won't need to check with my doctor because I have enough experience to know this won't work. What a crock. If this worked for you, then I'm happy for you. But I know this won't work for my IBS-D. I've tried a lot of fly-by-night approaches, but this one takes the cake.

Hello Pay it forward, do you mean you take 20 drops of GSE on a daily basis even when you're not having a flare or only when you're having a flare? Then do you take some daily for maintenance? I have wondered whether it should be used daily nonstop in case then it wouldn't work as well when you need it, don't know if that's true though.

I have been thru the ringer on GI issues top to bottom. I literally hit the floor one day and couldn't walk. I had five abscesses, Peritonitis, sepsis etc. lived on antibiotics before five surgeries in a row. I had 18 inches of my colon removed and an iliostomy for awhile. I am alive but the antibiotics caused permanent tendon damage. No more surgeries or antibiotics for me!!! Some things I do for my digestion instead of scripts... drink lemon water before eating it alkalizes the stomach, great for acid reflux. I only drink distilled or reverse osmosis water. For inflammation, I make fresh ginger juice and add a bit to a 'lemon shake-up'. The lemon masks the ginger taste and has lots of vit. C.... Add more ginger for constipation, it will work better and faster than any medicine. I also take magnesium daily. My surgeon said eat nuts and such just do not get constipated ever. The ginger/lemon shake up is the best I have found. You could probably add the other remedies I read on here to the shake up. Especially the ones that do not taste good like aloe, grapefruitSE, Noni. For the shake-up honey is recommended, I use agave because i do not like honey and lemon & it mixes easily. Fresh lemon juice, water & for the ginger juice-I grind up the root with water, strain the ginger back out, freeze into ice cubes. I use one cube in a drink or more if constipated. They do sell lemon/ginger juice at the store but it is potent tasting.

For my Diverticulosis IMMEDIATE relief while waiting for these other things to work: a heating pad held firmly against your painful area works great. Sometimes it is all I need. I saw where someone wrote a warm bath helps. This is the same premise, only faster. Trust me, it feels great right away. HAPPY RELIEF.

I just want to thank everyone's post I read about aloe vera juice/grape seed extract/papaya juice combo. My man has suffered from diverticulitis for over a year and a half. After a final 3rd visit with no relief and a MD's confirmation to our suspicion we decided to take this into our own hands. With no insurance and no Dr willing to take on his case, in fact we were told that the Dr decides who he wants to see. So in a rage of desperation, I visited our local health food store and bought all the suggested ingredients. A day and a half later.... HOLY MOLY! He is back to normal. We even got to go out to breakfast and he actually enjoyed his food with no pain! So again thank you for all your input and we are most definately goin natural on the remedies from now on. -So grateful!

I tried a lot of these remedies. As for the Grapeseed Extract, I read that it could cause problems, but my other thought is, if it kills bacteria, then it could kill all the good bacteria too. I could be wrong.

What someone told me to do, as she had, is to take Paul D'Arco tea 3 cups a day and to take probiotics. I failed miserably on drinking the tea 3 times a day, but I took a lot of probiotics, and it helped. Then I had one small pain in my colon, and I didn't know what to do about that. It dawned on me that it could be gas, so I took some charcoal capsules, and it went away.

I am still drinking noni juice in case it can heal the pouch I have. But I also plan on buying some papaya tablets, but I am drinking the juice.

Personally, I think it was the probiotics that helped most.

Johanna, can one really get diverticulitis because of eating too many raspberries? I thought that were terribly healthy and the only thing you could get from eating too many was diarrhea? But diverticulitis, if I understand well, comes from constipation. I am interested in this subject because we are intending to grow raspberries in our new house so I might be tempted to eat a lot more of them but I don't want to get health problems!

I was just diagnosed with diverticulitis. Dr. gave me 2 shots in the rear. They gave me one bag of IV antibiotics and sent me home with Cipro and Flagyl oral antibiotics. Its day 4 since diagnosed and I feel better than when I went in but it still is hurting and I had alot of back and pelvic pain with mine. Did anyone else? My back still hurt and pelvis which is what I struggled with for months on end before my lower abdominals started really hurting. Actually my abdominals didn't start hurting until about 2 weeks ago but the backache has been 6 months at least. Just wondering if they are even related. I have to strain alot to pass stools whether they are hard or not. I always have to push to get out my BM's. I have internal hemorroids and that is part of the problem. But I wonder if scar tissue for passing too large BM has not happened. Anyway I don't know a cure for me as I will always strain and I think that is what cause the intestines to swell the pockets from pure pressure of straining at the bowel to empty. I need to fill up the pockets so nothing can get in. I heard Slippery elm helps coats the intestines and if the normal muscus coating fills in the pockets then nothing can get in. Short on me having them get rid of the hemorroids which is surgury that I don't want. I don't feel like I have a answer. Does anyone know of anything to get rid of internal hemorroids?

Reporting back after my 2nd day on the aloe capsules: read the label on the bottle; it says it's for relieving constipation (I'll vouch for that! ) which is also verified by other reading I've done. The bottle also says, "Not for long term use. " And I have to say, I think 1 pill 1 day was enough for me! So, back to the drawing board. I'm going to try the aloe juice and papaya pills; if that doesn't work, I'll try the Noni juice or maybe just have to cleanse regularly...

Psyllium and clay can cause constipation if sufficient water is not consumed while taking them, and some people cannot use this remedy at all without experiencing constipation and gastric inflammation. About 10 years ago I got diverticulitis and peritonitis and was hospitalized for a week. My doctor told me that I would need an operation on my colon once I got healthier. My friend gave me some homemade noni juice to drink every morning and I took it for the 6 months after my hospital stay. When I went back to the doctor for a 6 month check up and to schedule the surgery, I no longer had any bad spots left on my colon. There was no reason to have surgery. My doctor put up the before and current xrays of my colon and asked me "What the heck did I do to cure myself like that!" I now make it myself and take it every morning.

We were in Hawaii and went to an organic noni processing plant. We tasted the noni juice, bought the capsules and continue to buy the capsules. The capsules give me energy, and may have helped me avoid getting sick so far this winter. But I do want you to know that noni juice tastes terrible-people described it as a cross between pineapple and stinky cheese. Nevertheless, I am going to order the juice to try it on my diverticulitis. I have an episode now, despite taking the capsules. But I imagine the juice is more easily transported through the bowel. I can tolerate the taste of a few capfuls- you don't have to drink a lot to get the daily dose they recommend for general health. Good luck on healing yourself!
