03/18/2009: Susan from Oshkosh, WI: "Hello everyone! I have become addicted to the site like everybody else. I have a question about oil pulling. I made it through five pages and did not see anything about food grade Castor Oil. I kept thinking about the Cayce remedies and his great results for many ailments using Castor Oil. Has anyone tried it? Does anyone know of a reason it should not be used for oil pulling? My intuition keeps telling me to try it, and I believe that we are often led to the right thing for ourselves. To everyone who is working on healing themselves, don't give up! If one thing does not work for you try again and again. In the trying you reinforce the "health"vibration around you. You are not alone in your seking and all of us who read your posts are pulling[no pun intended] for you and with you!"Replies
03/18/2009: Dianna from Austin, TX replies: "it seems like i read somewhere about someone using castor oil for oil pulling. i don't think it would hurt you. if it did anything 'bad' i think it might just make you have to have a bowel movement. i might try it myself in the morning. usually i use VCO. if you try it please post your results."
03/19/2009: Sueli from Boston, MA replies: "Hello and thank you to all who contribute to this wonderful resource! I have a question regarding blood type and type of oil used. I read somewhere that there is a way to find depending on one's blood type a particular oil may work best for his/her condition (I don't know if this is only true for oil pulling, or if it holds true for ingesting the oil also). Does anyone know about this? Thanks in advance."
03/19/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello Susan, Most castor oil I have seen comes in 2, 4 or 6 ounce bottles which are clearly labeled for oral ingestion, so why would you need one that states food grade when it is clearly labeled to be taken orally for a laxative effect. I agree with the one who stated that the only adverse effect you would likely have with OP with castor oil would be a laxative effect and since you would be expectorating the castor oil it wouldn't be passing through the intestines whereby it causes the laxative action, therefore there should be no laxative effect as long as you don't swallow it.
For me the worst side effect would be smelling and tasting the castor oil because I despise both the smell and taste, even the ones sold as tasteless & odorless. I had too much of the castor oil forced down in childhood, because this was my parents answer to whatever ailed us. Must have been beneficial because most of my siblings are still alive and I am #8 of 10 children and the youngest who is 6 years my junior is now 70 years old. So if you can tolerate the smell & taste, just be sure to spit the used oil out and be sure to let us know what your opinion of it is. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us."
04/12/2009: Vince from Enid, Oklahoma replies: "I have tried caster oil while oil pulling. It makes me very sleepy. After I pull."
03/11/2012: Nightfire The Mad Alchemist from Danville, Illinois, United States replies: "Hi pibbles I use VCO in the mornings for OPing and in the evening before bed I use Castor Oil and like Vince it makes me sleepy.... other benefits I noticed is that it usually helps my teeth if they have been aching and it's so darn thick that when I'm finished my jaw is usually to tired to 'grind' in my sleep which I have had a problem with on and off at nights, that leaves my jaw sore, and with a bad headache but with CO haha, no more."
01/27/2013: Al from Alvena, Sk., Canada replies: "The only thing I have seen regarding blood type and things that are good and bad depending on it are a series of books by Peter J. D'Adamo, the first of which is titled Eat Right For Your Type. The diet information is invaluable to me. Perhaps the oils that are good for your diet/blood type are the same as for oil pulling."

[YEA] 12/10/2013: Lydia from Dallas, texas: "Hi All. I started oil pulling 2 weeks ago, with coconut oil. when I began the end result when I spit out was very foamy and white. NOw when I spit out , it's not foamy or white, it's just like spitting out oil and saliva... Is this goood or bad? or normal? My teeth still feel very clean afterwards, and I've had the best poops EVER, since I started oil pulling. Anyway just wondering about why there is no more white foamy stuff. thanks."
12/01/2013: Tony from Singapore: "I have been doing oil pulling for some weeks with coconut oil. recently when I spat out the oil, some spilled on toilet seat and after some time, I notced some ants on the seat. any explanation ? thank you. regards"
[YEA] 11/30/2013: Jenny from Brisbane, Australia: "Hi everyone, have been meaning to try oil pulling and finally started today. I have periodontal disease and broke a tooth recently about which I am terrified of going to the dentist - profit driven like medical - so I decided to try some self help. I am using coconut oil which I already use for cooking, face moisturiser etc. and I found it easy to do but accidentally spat it out in the shower about 10 minutes in. Even with this short time, I have noticed a difference in my mouth! Teeth feel cleaner, smoother, and my mouth is fresher. I heard its also good for chronic sinusitis which I have so we will see.
After doing the oil pulling, I brushed my teeth with borax and baking soda, and then rinsed with sea salt in water.
I plan to do it each day and get up to the required 20 minutes. What do I have to lose - this is a natural product.
Will post again in a couple of weeks to report on results.
[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 10/26/2013: Malismjau from United Kingdom: "Hello! I'm 24 years old female. I started coconut oil pulling about 4 days ago. At the beginning only 10 min in the morning whilst taking shower and didn't notice any particular changes. Last two days I have been doing it 20 min in the morning before breakfast and 20 min before bedtime. I had root canal done on two of my molar teeth 4 years ago. To start with I had infections and I couldn't get rid of them but than it just stopped and I was getting jaw pains every now and than.... yesterday my gums swell around the two teeth, my jaw pains are constant, I had sore throat. This morning I woke up with less swelling. Still feeling horrible. Also noticed that I stink of sweat and it was so intense I had to run to shower straight away. I feel so unwell. I smoke about 6 cigarettes a day. Today I could barely handle one. Feel like I have no carvings at all. Smoke makes me cringe. I am convinced that all toxins and bacteria is leaving my body and I feel very unwell. But happy at the same time and wont stop. I cannot believe I haven't fond this cure before."
[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 09/20/2013: Caitlin from Austin, Tx: "Oil Pulling REALLY does cleanse as well as make your teeth whiter and improve your oral health. When I started with coconut oil, it did a number on my eczema skin, making it worse. So... I stopped! But going back to it after a couple of weeks also brought another kind of detox I did not go through the first time - i.e., headaches, backaches, blurry vision, but, better skin. Now, the heavy detox symptoms (3 days) are wearing down; skin is definitely looking better, and more importantly, if I oil pull for 15 minutes before bed, I sleep like a baby. Finally deep-sleeping through the night! Getting enough sleep by oil pulling has really improved my mood, my foggy brain, and my dark, under-eye circles -- they have all but disappeared. So, a big YES that oil pulling works where nothing else natural that I tried, did."
[YEA] 09/12/2013: Billie from Washington State, Usa: "I started oil pulling with coconut oil about three weeks ago. I have a stubborn fibroid, and after being on six month herbal regiment to shrink it, while it helped, I just didn't want to take all those herbs anymore. It did help reduce my period from heavy and seven days to about five days, and lessened the flow -- sorry if that's TMI :)
Anyway, I researched oil pulling and what caught my attention was that a person who had a problem with shifting teeth, once they started oil pulling, their teeth stopped shifting. Mine have been shifting since I got my braces off 8 years ago. I have to wear my retainer at night. So I started oil pulling and I have not had to wear my retainer since; my teeth have stayed straight and are whitening beautifully.
Even better though, my most recent period only lasted three days, and it was extremely light. I don't have any joint pain, I feel refreshed. I am hoping that it helped shrink my fibroid a bit more, as I am combining this with Chaste berry and serrapeptase, as well as drinking ACV water.
I feel better than I did when I was in my 20s. I love oil pulling; it's easy, I do it in the shower, and after I spit out the oil I gargle with salt water to loosen the little bit of oil from my mouth and then brush. If you haven't started oil pulling and are still trying to decide, give it a try for about a week, especially if you are suffering from arthritis. A week won't hurt you, and sparing fiftheen minutes before breakfast to do this -- you won't regret it."Replies
09/13/2013: Elsa Easterly from Elsewhere replies: "Billie,
Great to hear of your success! I am interested in what you were taking for menstrual issues. Could you please be specific about the amounts of chasteberry (and any other herbs), serrapeptase, and ACV that you used? Thank you very much. Elsa"
09/16/2013: Billie from Washington State, Usa replies: "Elsa, I take two capsules of serrapeptase a day, as well as one capsule of blackstrap molasses for iron and two capsules of chasteberry. I only drink ACV and water throughout the day. I avoid soy, and I also try to avoid dairy unless it is organic. My periods have been consistent and now because of the oil pulling, light. I am very happy with the results."
[YEA] 08/13/2013: Cadillacmatt from Los Angeles, Ca: "I came across oil pulling while looking for a holistic approach to oral care. I had a filling break from my tooth and I didn't want for it to rot out like ive seen in other people's. So I tried it, at the time I only had evoo, and although the results are awesome, the after taste made me gag. I did the evoo for two weeks, the difference was noticeable, whiter teeth, just an overall clean ( fresh from the dentist type of clean). Then I bought some coconut oil. Way better tasting, same results!! I'm glad I found this technique and recommend it highly!!!"
[YEA] 08/07/2013: Adnama from Urbana, Il: "I first heard of oil pulling about a year ago when I was trying to find remedies for dark circles. I gave it a shot for about a month, ran out of coconut oil, and didn't pick it back up until about 3 weeks ago. Since then I've been doing it twice a day for 20 minutes, with maybe one or two days I just didn't have the time for it. I started it up again because of a mouth sore caused by a decaying tooth. Oil pulling + peroxide + gargling with salt water made the pain go away within the night.
I am 21 years old, 5' 3", and 203 pounds according to my scale today. Since oil pulling, my keratosis pilaris has cleared up considerably. I still have a few bumps but my skin all over has a nice glow and I no longer have the red bumps that gave my skin the 'chicken skin' look. But I did recently have a visit to the beach, and I've always known that salt water + sun calms down my keratosis pilaris too. When I first started oil pulling I had the same effects but it took longer, but with the combined 'treatments' my skin is very smooth.
I've always had a glow to my face since I use the Oil Cleansing Method, but the added effect of Oil Pulling certainly helps too. My stretchmarks have faded, but I've been using organic unrefined virgin coconut oil (used for pulling as well, I got a pound of it off Amazon for fourty bucks, it's lasted me over six months and I still have 1/4 of it left) everytime I get out of the shower for over a year. I'm not sure if it has helped my dark circles. They're hereditary and have always been dark, like I got punched in both my eyes. I suppose I have been using less concealer lately...
My teeth are cleaner, whiter, and stronger. I have a tooth that is beyond being fixed, but I don't have the money to get it extracted. Oil pulling definitely keeps the pain away and helps keep food particles out. My tongue is always pink, my breath never smells bad. But I also use baking soda and peroxide to brush my teeth and tongue. I have a slightly crooked jaw caused by me chewing mostly on my left side do to my decaying tooth on the right side. It doesn't hurt anymore and I'm pretty sure my jaw line has gotten more defined. My left side is also the side that has fillings and the pulling doesn't effect them at all.
I have more energy. I'm really not a morning person but with a new job I started I have to get up around 6:30 am. Without oil pulling I don't think I'd be able to drag myself out of bed.
And since oil pulling, I haven't wanted to smoke marijuana. I actually stopped completely a week and a half ago. I'm not sure if it's because I'm oil pulling or because I stopped smoking weed or both, but I eat less and people have told me my over all appearance looks tighter like I've been working out. I have been walking a lot more, that's for sure. Probably because my energy is up. Yay!
Also, my dreams are a lot more vivid and I can remember them when I wake up. Also might be a side effect of not smoking anymore, but I have oil pulled longer than I haven't been smoking and know for a fact that my dreams started when I began oil pulling. I've probably had more energy because I have been getting a deeper sleep, and I only need 8 hours as opposed to the 10 hours I've been used to!
All in all, I've had a positive outcome to oil pulling and I don't plan to stop. Even if it's just a placebo effect, I definitely feel better and healthier. :)"
[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/20/2013: Baaarb from Sumter, Sc: "My daughter and I started oil pulling about a week and a half ago. I have various health issues. Interstitial cystitis (aka painful bladder), heart disease, high BP and high cholesterol, allergies and arthritis, migraines. We use coconut oil to pull and I was hoping to feel better... Instead I have been really sick with the worst migraine ever and we both have this itchy rash. My daughter said she is stopping the oil pulling and I am wondering if I should do the same? My sinus did seem better, but now I have even more medicine to take (benedryl) because of the itching. Can you tell me what to do?"Replies
07/23/2013: Tracy from San Augustine, Texas replies: "With as many health problems as you seem to have, you need to be careful about how to correct them. A therapy such as oil-pulling may be too much for you to start off with, causing multiple reactions in your body that your system just cannot handle at one time. I would suggest you segregate your health problems & try some therapies that are specific to each health problem, for now. For instance, for bladder problems, try remedies such as parsley(tincture, extract, herb), cranberry, cornsilk tea & nettles. For high blood pressure, take aged garlic extract or garlic capsules to regulate, beet extract to lower bp, arginine & niacin, etc. For cholesterol, take flax seed (& oil caps), lecithin capsules, fenugreek extract, a weeklong juice diet, etc. For allergies, try Quercetin, local honey & bee pollen, alfalfa tablets, etc. For arthritis, try eating cherries, no white sugar or flour products, cat's claw herb, topical DMSO, etc. Migraines are often one of the ways your body is telling you that it needs cleansing, but they can also be caused by cleansing too fast. As you correct each of your health problems, you may have reactions to the cleansings or healings in the form of migraines, skin rashes, intestinal problems, etc. Two things that can help remove toxins from the body are Chorella & EDTA. Chlorella is a green algae. Spirulina is another algae that is similar to Chlorella. EDTA is much stronger & requires some studying to use properly for detoxifying the body. So, don't rush into anything. EDTA will also help with heart disease."
[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/27/2013: Mictre from Sydney, Nsw, Australia: "Two weeeks ago I commenced using coconut oil for 'oil pulling' and I'm just wondering if the bodily symptoms experienced since are related. After the first two days I contracted gastro-enteritis for a week (so did my 7yr old daugter who is not 'oil pulling'), so I'm thinking that was just bad luck.
On recovery I noticed a sore gland on left side of throat, so I reccommenced Oil Pulling.
Next day I woke with a dull bruised feeling on my left side above the hip and below the bottom rib. As the day wore on it got worse (never sharp). Sore gland still aching. Had two panadol mid afternoon and late that night couldnt sleep or lay on my side because of the discomfort. Wondered about likely hernia. So I got up in the middle of the night and opened up 'Earthclinic' for some self diagnosis. The pain in my side seemed to be in the Gallbladder/ kidney vicinity so after taking 2 more panadol I blended up some apples and mixed a glass with 2 tblspoons of ACV..... Slept very well and woke without pain. Have had same tonic once more today as well as baking soda H20 drinks (2).
Tonight gland still sore and dull side discomfort still present.
What do you think?
Will get GP to check me out tomorrow. Plan to keep going with alkalizing.

06/27/2013: Val from Birmingham, Uk replies: "You may be allergic to coconut oil. Try with sunflower oil."
[YEA] 05/16/2013: Sherbert from Houston, Tx: "I started pulling with olive oil on May 5th and didn't like a rancid background taste so I bought coconut oil and like it much better. I have to briefly warm it up to melt it and swoosh about 1 Tbls during my shower in the morning. I have already noticed a few changes in just this short period of time. Will get back with more details soon!"
[YEA] 04/03/2013: Dani from Adelaide, Australia: "I have suffered with very sensitive teeth for years and avoided going to the dentist for fear of the pain that comes with a checkup and clean. That is until I started oil pulling with coconut oil. After a week of oil pulling for approx 10 mins a day 5 days a week all sensitivity was gone and I stopped using sensitive toothpaste. My teeth became whiter and most soreness went, I just had a very slight tenderness around the my bottom 4 front teeth. So I went to the dentist expecting cavities and was told that there were none and I was doing a good job cleaning my teeth despite avoiding the dentist for many years. After having a proper clean my teeth look and feel amazing. The oil pulling sorted out my sensitivity and improved my gums and oral health so that I didn't suffer pain or feel embarrassment at the dentist. I will continue to oil pull so that sensitivity doesn't return. Thanks again earth clinic"
12/08/2012: Sue M. from Worden, Il, Usa: "There was an excellent article on Dr. Mercola's website about VCO and oil pulling, so I'd thought I'd post for everyone to read:
