Oil Pulling Side Effects   0  0

Hi, so I would assume oil pulling would not be a good idea to do while breastfeeding in case toxins and other gunk might start leeching their way out through my breast milk?

And another question, is there any way you can overly cleanse yourself through oil pulling and rid your body of the good bacteria inside? especially when some. Of the people on the forums of oil pulling are talking about cleansing your body out with apple cider vinegar first for about 2 weeks before starting oil pulling to have a lesser chance of having a herxheimer reaction. Soo idk how and when to jump into oil pulling.

Dear Krysten,

You asked about oil pulling and detoxing while breastfeeding. Is there something specific you wish to detox from, or just general detox? How old is your baby? With a young breastfeeding baby, I would be more cautious about detoxing. No matter what the age of your baby, you will want to take detoxing slowly and gently.

I think some gentle detoxing is okay with an older baby. Your body is detoxing in sense all the time. Your blood, kidneys, and liver are all working to keep your body clean. Drinking water is a form of detoxing and we do that daily.

I would say that no matter what you try, if you start having a strong reaction to stop or slow way down. Better yet, just take it slowly. If you start with Apple Cider Vinegar, take 1 teaspoon in 6 oz. of water for a few weeks. Gradually work up to 1 Tablespoon in 8 oz. of water each day. At some point, if you add oil pulling, try it with 1/2 Tablesppon of oil for 5 minute a day. Maybe move up to 1 T. for 10 minutes a day.

I have used Apple Cider Vinegar all through pregnancy and breastfeeding. I have done oil pulling while nursing a toddler. I have never noticed any reaction in my children. At the same time, I have never done any detoxing during pregnancy or breastfeeding that have ever caused me to have strong (herx type) symptoms.

Hope that helps!

I did oil pulling for 20 minutes for my first time today. Was this too long and should I notice any side effects?

Hi. I want to get started with oil pulling. I remember reading here a good while back that it can make you sick, if your body is not ready for it, and that you can get it "ready" with baking soda? I'm reading around here, and can't find that general information. Thank you, oh wonderful, EC.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Thank you so much, I just discovered this site and oil pulling. I have used plain EVOO not organic is this okay?I have been doing OP for 2days. Yesterday before I started to do yoga I had a coughing fit and kept coughing up phelgm and it lasted for 15min. I kept spitting out lots of phelgm. I did my yoga at about 9pm.

That has never happened before, is it from the OP and by the way I stopped smoking on Friday. I thought about the connection... I drank half a shot glass in the morning, after I read about OP. This was mid-morning and today about noon. I thought about the coughing maybe it does have to do with the smoking.

Oil Pulling Tips   0  0

I've been trying oil-pulling for a week now and still cannot do more than a few minutes before I start gagging and need to spit. I've read all your tips and try to implement them but it hasn't helped yet. Is there any benefit from doing 3-4 minutes?

Yes, Shelly, even a few minutes each time (preferably twice a day) gives benefits.

I just started oil pulling also. The first time I tried I had to spit it out cause of the need to gag. The second time I tried it I MEASURED a Tablespoon of oil and it was indeed easier to handle. I do it about 10 to 15 min. Folks talk about how the liquid changes and it does. I see it more as my saliva 'digesting' the oil and in fact saliva does break down the oil in that manner. It was much easier since I measured the amount of oil I use. I just use motor oil (hahahaha...) no, I used olive oil because that is what I have available most of the time. ~jillery

Hello Jillery,

Re oil pulling...

If I could also add to make the experience more tolerable...use a high quality coconut oil. That is, if you like coconut.

Shelley,

Re oil pulling tolerance.

You and about everyone has to overcome the gag reflex. One has to be conditioned to tolerate. If one has the gag reflex then do NOT try to hold as long as you can. Instead, use a good tasting oil (coconut oil) and hold for only a minute. Ten minutes later, do it again...for only a minute. Then quit for a day. Next day, do it again but see if you can go two minutes but never go to the point when you are choking. Try to go a couple of times but never if you are getting nauseous from it. The point is to overcome the gag sensation is to gradually build a tolerance and you never force the issue on your reflexes.

There was some study done that said in order for oil pulling to have an effect, it must be done 19 minutes. I would take an amount that doesn't make you gag. Too much in a small mouth and it will cause gagging.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I am on day 2 of oil pulling with Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) and its doing something-just not sure what. I do have questions though. This morning right after swishing I had a bowel movement. Then a small one again when I came home for lunch. About an hour and a half later I was at work & had to rush to the bathroom where I had a loose (and somewhat explosive) bowel movement that kind of scared me-sorry for the gross details. I suffer from constipation often & don't go this often & haven't eaten anything different so I guess I can contribute this to the oil. The most noticiable difference is my energy-I have none! Today I have been deathly tired-more tired than I've been in some time. I also experienced what seem to be faster heartbeats today. Is this normal? And I'm not using organic EVOO-is this ok? I have sesame seed oil in my cupboard but it's not organic & just says pure-can I use this? And what I'm most confused about is brushing afterwards. Is using your regular toothpaste ok? Hopefully I can get some help with these questions. I'll continue to post updates on my progress. Thanks in advance for the help!

The same tiredness and heart racing happened to me too with the oil pulling. After a couple of days of pulling and I realized what was doing it, I stopped oil pulling completely....... Haven't done it in months. I miss it but the increased heart rate scared me. I used olive, sesame, and coconut oil. All organic and it happened with all of them. Oil pulling should not be taken lightly for some people. MHO

It sounds like you both are experiencing some detox symptoms. This does happen with oil-pulling sometimes. Some of the side effects can be racing heart, nausea, headache, flu-like symptoms, rash etc. Take some time off allowing your body to clear the toxins, drink lots of water and start again when you feel good. It's worth doing since you are clearing so much junk from your system.

Val and TinyDancer: When starting oil-pulling you are using muscles that haven't been used in this way maybe ever. Altho we use our mouth muscles for eating and talking, oil-pulling is a whole new area. The tiredness and heart racing might possibly be the overuse of powerful muscles that haven't been conditioned to such movements. Jaw muscles are very powerful: witness people who can balance a heavy bench on their lower teeth!

For this reason I did not start the full 20 minutes as recommended. I barely made it to 3 minutes at first. Working up slowly, the muscles get stronger and can do more.

I finally decided to stop after day 4. I pulled in the mornings and only did it for 10 minutes or so. The heart racing continued and got worse; I even had an episode where I felt short of breath. The fatigue also got worse-I would come home for work & sleep for hours. I started on a Monday, stopped on a Thursday, and was so tired I basically slept the weekend away. My bottom lip also cracked & bleed-I'm guessing from the oil seeping out while I swished. The symptoms remind me of when I was severly anemic a few years ago & had to have a blood transfusion. In a few weeks I'll try again-probably with a different oil and do it every other day.

@ Vee and Tinydancer: You should be checked by your Doctor for the racing heart and fatigue. Could be an underlying heart condition. Do not just assume that it is from the OPing.

I saw news reports about cheaper oils being used to dilute OO and even EVOO. These cheaper oils go rancid and destroy vitamin K which is needed for blood to clot. I used a lot of EVOO and had become anemic due to internal hemorrhaging because I was not aware until I saw the news briefs. We are on our own to research and protect ourselves.

Tinydancer--thought I would mention when I took magnesium citrate my heart "fluttered" so bad I was referred to a specialist, had a stress test and was diagnosed with PVC (premature ventricular contractions). To make a long story short, I found out it was caused by the magnesium citrate I had replaced my magnesium with. The citrate is processed from corn and all of our corn has been genetically modified in one way or another. Since I went back on mag tabs or powder I no longer have any palpitations. Pay attention to any citrate or citric acid in any of your meds or supplements.

[YEA]  I wanted to comment and say that oil pulling with organic extra virgin Olive oil has worked for me in the 2 short days that I have tried it. I am very glad I found this website.

I suffer from standard sinus problems and I've found that I flush my sinuses multiple times hourly. 2 days ago, I averaged maybe 5 sinus flushes per hour (using saline spray). Then I tried oil pulling.

Day one after starting oil pulling, I flushed my sinuses maybe once an hour. Day two, I've barely flushed at all. I can breatheeee!!! I can inhale and exhale and feel deep clean breaths in my nasal cavities.

Regarding oil pulling for teeth... I have one amalgam filling and was hesitant to begin oil pulling. After research on various websites, I found that other people reported oil pulling with fillings and didn't experience issues. The general understanding is that if you do experience issues with your fillings, there was pre-existing damage anyway. I visit the dentist regularly and I know that my fillings are entact, so I went ahead and began my routine.

I have not experienced any metallic tastes or other abnormalities. I will send an update if I do. Despite only starting this routine within the last 2 days, my teeth are shiny. I floss regularly, and I don't experience bleeding, but my gums are slightly swollen. Since I've started pulling, I've noticed that my gums don't feel swollen anymore. They feel very healthy.

Here is my routine:

I oil pull first thing in the morning with 1TBL/3tsp of evoo. (The oil that I use is standard and found in the organic section of my grocery store. ) I typically pull for 10-15 minutes. I can really feel the change of the oil in my mouth once I reach the end of the swishing period.

I spit it out, and immediately rinse with warm water. I brush my teeth with a tooth powder solution consisting of baking soda and sea salt, and then I gargle again with the remaining warm water (with some of the tooth powder mixed in). I then gargle one more time with just regular warm water to ensure I've cleaned my mouth thoroughly.

In the evenings I floss and gargle with warm water and baking soda/sea salt. In the 2 short days that I've oil pulled, I've noticed that my floss is removing more plaque than before (despite not changing eating habits), so I am definitely happy with the results thus far.

If I do experience any negative effects, I will send an update, but overall I am very happy so far with my oil pulling routine.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Have been oil pulling for four days now with extra virgin olive oil cold pressed. Today went as usual then started to get a metal taste when I drank a glass of water. I was fine after oil pulling. Later I ate two marshmallows and after that is when I got the metal taste. Have looked all over but have not read anything similar. Has anyone experienced this? How long does it last?

"Y" from Chicago--please be advised that your olive oil has probably been diluted with a cheaper oil. I used to get brand named EVOO but it seemed to be going rancid in a very short period of time. My husband could not detect the odor but I could detect a very subtle one. Then I saw a report on the World News that many foods are being diluted to cut costs. Two of the products they reported on were tea and olive oil. I started using CO and am pleased with the results. I've only been doing it for a couple/few weeks. (I dunno exactly! ) I haven't read anymore replies here so I don't know if anyone else addressed your issue.

Add 1 - 250 or 350mg BHT to a newly opened bottle of any vegetable oil to prevent rancidity.

Hi Timh--I wouldn't be afraid to try the BHT but I haven't used vegetable oil for years because it is probably from corn. We were using olive oil until I coverted to the CO. We don't know where the cheaper oils to dilute the olive oil are coming from but I think it may be corn because it used to be cheaper. I had been informed that citric acid and citrate were processed from corn because it was cheaper than citrus fruit. I became aware of this when I started using magnesium citrate because it was supposed to be more readily absorbed (information from a neurosurgeon) and I started having palpitations so bad I was referred to a cardiologist. I was diagnosed with premature ventricular contractions (PVC). The person who advised me about the "citrate" was not a doctor but had been involved in having foods tested for hidden sources of MSG due to his severe sensitivity. I immediately stopped the mag citrate and went back to plain magnesium and the palpitations went away.

Because of my difficulty in processing information I am on SSD. I had been a drafting tech for fifteen years and the head trauma I had four years prior to my termination was the straw that broke the camel's back. I had multiple injuries (thrown from horses and kicked in the head twice) then thrown out of a car (coma for a month). That injury was prior to the one that prompted my termination.

[YEA]  I have been oil pulling with olive oil for six months. I would use a different toothbrush for oil pulling and another for normal tooth brushing, and alway rinse my mouth out with warm salt water (one teaspoon in a small glass). I feel I am less likely to cross contaminate my mouth by using a different toothbrush.

My mouth feels much healther and my teeth are stronger, my dentist recommended for me to use a filler toothpaste as I have sensitive enamel. I choose to oil pull instead, and six months later my teeth are not as sensitive. I would recommend everyone giving it a try as it is inexpensive. It's just getting into a routine, like brushing and flossing teeth. Soon it becomes second nature. Of course you should follow your dentist advice also, I just made my own decision that suited me.

[YEA]  I started pulling oil with cold pressed olive oil. It was about 3.00 for a container of it making it fairly inexpensive. I have asthma and anemia. My teeth are also super sensitive. I also constantly have green yellow crap coming out of the lower half of my lungs alot. Sorry to be graphic. Only when my lungs are open can I get the stuff out. It has been 3 days already. The first day I only felt nauseated. But my teeth were so clean. The second day I had clean teeth and I fell asleep. I just got done doing this and my gums are super pink my teeth the whitest they have been in years. The hard plaque is slowly removing. I feel alot calmer and relaxed. My muscles dont hurt as much (I have chronic pain from both a horse and car accident) and I feel like I can finally sleep. So far I have been doing this in the evening. I am hoping with the enzyme stimulation it increases my metabolism so maybe I will even burn fat while sleeping? I will post another update in a week or so and let you all know how it is going. But so far its great. I have no reason to lie or any company I run to support with this testomony. I really want my respiratory problems gone!

[YEA]  Ok I just want to report after few days I have those white teeth that when I look in the mirror I'm amazed.

I always had beautiful big teeth but yellow in color so my smile wasn't such a remarkable thing. I don't smoke or drink coffee but they were yellow no matter the toothpaste I used. I don't know if I should keep doing it cause people will really notice it's getting to be a hollywood smile lol!

First time oil pulling although been winning the battle with other detox methods I figured why not try another along with them it couldn't hurt alternating. Just tried olive oil, and let me say olive oil doesn't taste bad however that being said after swooshing it through my teeth and around my tongue I started vomiting and nasal drainage was pouring out so fast I had to blow my my nose and cough much mucous up. After vomiting a few times I felt better so I went another round hoping to make it more than 15 seconds and I did for near a minute although I hit that point again and when spitting out the oil it was foamy with still a yellow tinge although this was my limit for the day.

I noticed instant results and will keep you updated as I feel over the next couple weeks, btw I had to mouthwash afterward from vomiting and to get the oil residue out and using listerine was more painful than I have ever experienced the past 40 years. I'm winning the fight of having a brain tumor, abdomen tumor, and foot tumor, along with lead and mercury poisoning over the years that left dense metaphesial lines on bones in my wrist. I'm still waiting to see doctors for treatment after diagnosed last February. I'd be dead if I hadn't taken matters in my own hands. Since my several month on off detox regimen with pectosol, chlorella, selenium, ALA, and a couple others I have felt abdomen gummed getting smaller by 60% and look like I'm 27 and not 38 in this short time. Winning as Sheen would say!

Hi, I'm very new to this..... What type of olive oil to use for oil pulling (from supermarket shelf for cooking/salad)? When brushing teeth, do you use the same type baking soda as for making breads/dough (the type in small bottle) in the confectionery ingredient shelf of the supermarket? Thanks a lot!

Lynn, just in case you didn't get an answer yet... I've been using "extra light" olive oil which has virtually no flavor. I find it's easier to do the oil pulling with something flavorless--makes me much less likely to gag. I can just put my mind on something else and not think about what's in my mouth.

Baking soda is also called bicarbonate of soda and is normally used in baking.

To Lynn from Singapore: I recommend extra virgin olive oil, organic if possible but at least extra virgin. For the baking soda/sodium bicarb yes you are thinking of the same thing. In addition to the supermarkets and wholesale shops, I also have seen bicarb soda in bags at my local Asian market in my US city. Get as big a bag or box as you can, you will use a lot of it and it is better value than lots of little boxes. I am new to olive oil pulling just like you. Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes. Oil Pulling - From what I have read online, people with crowns and/or false teeth cannot use this method as it will loosen the teeth or come out completely. Is there any other method for a detox? I'm really upset that I cannot utilize this method because I do have crowns.

Hello,

I oil pulled twice today for 10 minutes each session (EV olive), I saw white foam at the corner of my mouth but both times I spat out it was yellow. Is this maybe because I can't press it through my teeth?

Also, does this help with sensitive teeth in time? Just at the time I was going to switch to natural toothpaste my teeth got sensitive & I switched to Sensodyne instead.

If it matters I am suffering from systemic Candida, & I am 39 yrs old.

This site is awesome & has given me new hope as I had no more money to spend on probiotics. Thank you & God bless.

I understand you oil pulled with EV olive oil, and it was still yellow after your session of 10 minutes. Well, in my experience, olive oil is the one type of oil for oil pulling that very rarely becomes white. Do not worry about it: You still get the positive effects.
After many years of oil pulling with sesame oil, sun flower oil and peanut oil, I have now added EV olive oil and coconut oil. The oils are all slightly different, but I like them all.

Hi Carolyn, I'm sure the OP will have great effect. For cheap and incredibly good probiotics, google kombucha tea. You can make it at home for a few cents/L. Very good against candida albicans as the yeasts that will also grow in the tea are not spore producers like candida and will help muscle that bad yeast from your system. It is also loaded with enzymes, B vitamins and beneficial acids. I take Kombucha after OP and it's a great daily treatment for health.

Carolyn, about your sensitive teeth... I had that problem years ago and it was getting worse and worse, to the point that I had to use Sensodyne and if I switched back to regular toothpaste even once, the pain would come right back. Then I happened to read something about fluoride causing or aggravating this problem (it's been over 10 years so I don't remember clearly what it said). I switched to non-fluoride toothpaste and have tried to avoid fluoride ever since, and my problem went away almost immediately, never to return. I still don't swish ice water or ice cream around in my mouth, but I can swish tap water--and certainly couldn't before. I also recommend CoQ10 if you have any gum sensitivity or problems.

As for candida, I recently determined that I have a problem (relatively minor, but some symptoms were increasingly troublesome and I didn't want it any worse! ). I found a great product called Threelac, and after one month have noticed great improvements. Actually I saw some improvements just in the first week and it continued... But yesterday was the one-month point and I noticed then that my brain function was better than it's been in years. I'm thrilled and recommending it to everyone. (Just do a search and you'll find it.)

[SIDE EFFECTS]  Has anyone experienced impacted wisdom teeth since beginning oil pulling? I Have been OPing with olive oil for four months and suddenly I have two third molars erupting on me at age 46! I lost a first molar to tooth breakage after a root canal about eight years ago. I do not have a bridge in that spot, so I'm thinking there is now room in the back of my mouth so the second molar has shifted which gives the third molar room to sprout. It is a whole tooth, crown, the works but it is lying lower than it should and is poking through the skin next to my tongue.

Also, I've lost a filling since OPing and another tooth has broken. LOL! What will happen next?

Posted by Teck (Las Cruces, Nm, Usa) on 01/29/2011

[YEA]  I've been OPing for at least four days with extra virgin, cold pressed olive oil, about 15 - 20 min in the morning after I wake up. I noticed an immediate difference after the first OP, just in my teeth being slightly whiter and the clean feeling all over my teeth. Each day, my teeth have gotten whiter and stayed white throughout the day. I've been having some MINOR sinus drainage, but it also seems my face has gotten clearer (I'm pregnant, so I've been having facial issues with pimples and dry, itchy, red splotchy areas). After a full 30 days I will post again my results.

What impact will OP have on my tooth implants?

Will it help lose weight?

No idea as far as losing weight but my one implant is ok. I asked the surgeon and he said that it wouldn't be a problem! I did it while I had a root canal with no crown and the filling kept falling off. Was it because of the OP? I don't know. Some experts say that it can be if the root canal has a problem. I ended up losing my tooth because after putting the filling back a few times it broke.

Unfortunately OP didn't seem to do anything for my dry eyes. What makes my eyes feel a lot better is putting a few cold slices of cucumber on them every day. I discovered that by coincidence when I decided to try the cucumber slices to get rid of the bags under my eyes! I have been doing OP for quite a while and to be honest I don't notice a thing!

[YEA]   "I have been oil pulling for the past 2 years and the first thing that I have noticed is that I have not had a bad cold since then, and using olive oil at first was harsh but, I have become used to it. Losing weight I am way over weight and since I have been oil pulling I have lost 50 lbs and feel much better. I oil pull every morning before I have breakfast for about 20 minutes. When I come home from work I oil pull again this time longer over one hour while on my computer. Oil pulling is a part of my daily life. My over all condition has improved a lot. No more asthma atacks or wheezing and with the loss of the weight I find myself getting around much more instead of watching TV all the time. I am not as tired as how I used to be after losing the toxins that plays a major roll in my life. At the beginning my body was purging out all the impurities and this does happen. Depending on your condition. Everyones condition is different.

[SIDE EFFECTS]  When I started to pull olive oil 3 days ago, next morning wake up with a BIGGG HEADACHE! Ok, when to the bathroom and do it again, finish the second day (morning)and some yellow mucus never seen before came out thru my nose. Headache is gone. After that was clear mucus and stuffy runny nose.

Today is the 3 day and have whole day with stuffy (and runny nose), sneeze and cold like, no taste. Dont know what to think. If I still feeling that way maybe I stop pulling and try to massage my gum with the oil (the way my Mom did with babies to clean their (our) mouth.

After 20 minutes I spit the oil into a little plastic bag with tissues, tie a knot in it and dispose of it. Then I brush my teeth with a toothpaste containing bicarb and other goodies, but here's the thing I have been wondering about: I get a strong taste/smell of ammonia in my mouth during and after brushing, until I rinse with propolis tincture. Any comments anyone?

PS My eyesight has improved so much I've had to replace my spectacles. And I don't need any glasses at all for reading now! My optician was amazed. he clearly didn't believe me until he had tested me.

Betty, the ammonia smell could be some kind of chemical reaction w/ your tooth brush formula as I have never read any report of this as result of O.P. so do your brushing at another time but do a post-clean w/ H2O2 gargle; then monitor for the A smell.
