10% BENZOYL PEROXIDE, NEEM OIL
[YEA] Marie from Sumter SC writes: "This saved my dog’s life. Mitaban was literally killing him. Neem oil smells like garlic, but when he’s dry, its not too bad. Give the dog a haircut so his fur is ½ inch. Mix 8 ounce bottle of 10% benzoyl peroxide (People) facial cleanser with 16-20 ounce bottle of dog shampoo. This will do for several baths. BENZOYL PEROXIDE BLEACHES JUST LIKE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE.
Use ‘dog’ towels and blankets and remove the nice bathroom rug. Wear old clothes. Wet dog completely. Drain bathtub. Lather dog with a generous amount of benzoyl peroxide shampoo mix for 10 minutes. Give dog a shower for 10 minutes to rinse very carefully. Benzoyl peroxide opens the pores-- mites live in the pores. Keep dog in tub. Add ¼ cup neem oil to gallon of warm water in a bucket. If the dog is small and you can find a container that he fits in, do that inside of bathtub. Soak him for 5 minutes, massage well several times and he’s done. For medium to large dog, put each foot in bucket and massage solution into dog’s leg. Use a cup to pour over dog repeatedly trying to save as much as possible in bucket to reuse. Massage into the entire dog. Be careful of eyes. Use a sponge for the belly and face. Wash 5-10 minutes, depending on how big the dog is. Do not rinse off. Do not towel off. When he stops dripping, wrap him in a blanket and stick him in his kennel or a small warm spot. Keep dog warm until dry. All his pores are open; he could take a terrible chill. Bathe every week. He can have baths twice a week instead if it is really bad. Every 2-3 days, rub neem oil on afflicted areas, more often if he won’t stop chewing. It doesn’t matter if he licks it off after a few minutes. They make neem oil pills. My dog also gets the skin yeast infections dogs can get with demodex so we had to soak him in vinegar. No soap, no scrubbing, just soak good. He has a wading pool. We always add a gallon of vinegar to it. He soaks himself in it and that cures his yeast."

I had a sinus infection on and off for the last 15 years! I have tried everything and more from the regular md's including pain pills for years to get rid of that horrible head ache around my eyes and cheek bones. A couple of years ago while walking, I Met a man' selling a book about Cancer cures/prevention. he had published the book himself and i was interested in prevention, and what he had to say. He told me that all Humans and animals would benefit greatly by drinking and BATHING in ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH THE MOTHERS... I found this to be very interesting and decided to do my own experiments and research, I have a dog who was beginning to get mange on her hind knee it was red and irritaded the vets wanted to give her some horrible medicine and she was clearly not feeling well.I held him over the sink and poured the Vinegar strait from the bottle over her infected knee she squirmed a bit probably from the stinging but a second later that smart pooch put her leg on my chest so i could at it better (as though she knew i was gonna fix her) after the first time it was 80% better and in two days that mange was gone! so I took a bath using the vinegar i probably used a quart as I buy it in gallon jugs ...I could not believe how I felt after one bath..."Reborn" is the word that comes to mind. after that one bath I began to take it orally, in the morning or anytime i had heart burn another ailment of mine...The ACV has worked wonders,also it took My skin tags off and made my skin and hair so much brighter.i also only use coconut oil for moisturizing and a small amount in my hair for dryness..."

[YEA] 12/26/2007: Mary from London, Canada writes: "My lab/mix suffered from mange and candida 1 year ago and thru this website and others, I was able to stop his paw licking/biting, smelly ears, hot spots, rashes and hair loss on his body with 3 simple ingredients - unpasturized apple cider vinegar (1 tbs per meal) 2 tbs. plain yogurt with acidophillus in it and local , not store bought, honey. The honey can be applied to red areas on their body, I've used the yogurt in his ears to help heal and the ACV also works for fleas and digestive problems. After spending thousands of $$ at my Vet's, the cures were at my health food store. One other mention, switch your pets foods to a Candida free formula. You'll save $$ not visiting the Vet's office"

My 6mnth old Amstaff pup developed dermodectic mange. At first just one spot on the top of her head, then moved to her cheek, eye and nose. Tried the conventional dip routine - didn't work, mite population wasn't decreasing after two weeks and the dip made the pup very drowsy and nauseous. Looked on this site and found the 'Acne cream cure'. I bought some from my local chemist - called 'Benzac' here. Applied it to the first spot on top of the head every day for a week. After two weeks the hair started growing back. Have since applied to all the bald spots and after approx two weeks of treatment, the hair is growing back on all the patches. She is also on homeopathic sulphur and immune boosters, but looking great.

He was also killing any plants in the garden he urinated on! I stopped the treatment as I believed ivermectin was worse than the mange. I found a remedy on this site Benzoyl Peroxide 5% gel, which you can get over the counter for Acne. I read some scientific study of this product for Mange and it has two affects. It opens the pours that the mites are living in and the product then kills the mites. After the first application we saw an immediate affect. My dog stopped biting and licking his paws. We carried on treating him for about a week, rubbing a small amount of the gel in to the affect areas. It all went ! It is amazing. The amount of time and money we have spent trying to treat him. I can't believe that an appalling product such as ivermectin is being used, when a small local application of benzoyl peroxide does the trick. If the mange ever comes back we just apply the gel and it goes. We have had the same tube for 6 months now, it is so economical (maybe another reason why vets don't recommend it!)"
09/30/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "I agree that commercial products are useless, but I worked for a commercial interest as an industrial chemist once (just moonlighting!), and the point in making certain products is NOT to cure, but to make sure the medicine is weak enough or useless enough so that people can keep coming back again and again for more.
Oh yes, one more interesting tidbit on "company policies" that I worked for. They have this policy that says UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES can anyone in the company claim a cure, even if it IS A CURE. The reason why this is so, is it HURTS business interest a WHOLE LOT. And here is the reason why:
A cure they can sell you only once, say make $5 profit, but it becomes a lucrative product, if you HAD to buy them every month for the rest of your miserable life. Instead of a $5 profit, it becomes $60 per annum - annuity! You have a choice of a $60 annuity for the rest of your life, or a one time $5 profit.
Any company would choose the $60 annuity, and so does banks. Hence, the pressure to sell GMO plants that cannot bear seeds, modifying your DNA (by horizontal gene transferring), making you more sick, so you can buy MORE medicine. It makes business sense and it kills us. It is the same with vaccines which as mycoplasma, monosodium glutamate, mercury & aluminum added, not on consent of the parents, but by mandate.
Hence, because I wasn't a genius in formulating this kind of twisted medicine, I was eventually fired since all the formulas I submitted was "just a cure". Also the formula had to be complicated enough to get a patent. Finally, it also had to be formulated in such a way that people keep will buying them for the rest of their lives. Those are the three major policies: no cure, complicated, and addictive!
Benzoyl peroxide 5% gel works quite well on mild cases of mange. It works the same way as hydrogen peroxide and borax, although the benzoyl won't kill the demodectic directly (benzoic acid and oxygen, when broken down is not an insecticidal), it kills them by oxidative properties of the peroxide portion. It works like a hydrogen peroxide, but without the insect killing properties of the borax. So simple cases of mange a benzoyl peroxide would do.
However, I would much prefer to mix borax with the benzoyl peroxide to get some insecticidal properties, at the very least. Still my dog had a bad case of mange, and it didn't work for him, perhaps it was because I didn't add borax at the time, but I decided it was safer for my dog to use a hydrogen peroxide with borax, at the very least borax had a LASTING effect on killing mites and fleas, as the borax powder continues to kill WHEREVER the dog goes.
A benzoyl peroxide used alone couldn't do this, but it becomes a mild preservative (benzoic acid) instead of an insecticidal borax that has essential mineral of boron in nutrition for mammals, such as my dog, if it does so happen on accidental ingestion. "

Once a day. In two days the area around his eyes had cleared and the strip on his nose is fading. No hair loss. Early diagnosis helped."

Brewer's Yeast, 10 Grain 650 mg - Vegetarian Tablets. I gave my 9 year old German Shepherd a hand-full of Brewer's Yeast, 10 Grain 650 mg - Vegetarian Tablets two times a day. (a handfull was between 12 to 20 tablets each time). In less than 2 weeks new hair was returning & within 6 weeks her hair was fully returned, and the black hair was no longer dull & grayish, (she was an older dog) it came back very black & shiney & very soft. She never had another skin problem after that.
Most dogs love these tablets & will happily eat them. I now feed them for treats as well. If you have a dog that doesn't like it, you can buy the Brewers Yeast powder & mix it in their food. Brewers Yeast is mostly B vitamins. Very natural & non-toxic. (Be sure to buy a very healthy product with the least artificial ingredients) I bought mine at the health food store, the kind for people. You will go through more than one bottle.
I have used this remedy for Demodectic Mange with great success on more than one dog.
(Side-note: my dog also had problems with her hips, & after a treatment with Brewers Yeast - her hips got better. She quit limping.) I don't mind answering questions about this. Feel free to contact.

Diet is key in addition to this concoctions as this Demodex Mange affects the Immune System. Doesn't anyone know this? I have heard no mention of Diet to boost and keep up the immune function."

Sarcoptic, the contagious mange that is on the skin surface, is generally easily and most effectively treated with "Revolution". Although not a holistic option it is quick, easy and most importantly for the dog - painless. What concerns me about some of the suggestions is that when the skin is raw and sore, adding solutions cause PAIN i.e. VINEGAR. When treating any creature for a physical ailment one must always keep in mind the behavioral impact of a treatment. If your touch brings pain, particularly when your dog isn't well and needs you most, you are doing harm behaviorally.
DEMODEX is something our rescue groups encounters almost daily. We have had over twenty cases of it just within the past few months. It is an internal disorder reaction to the mites that EVERY dog has and can be combated and we have found rarely with a reoccurrence, by combining modern medicine with holistic practices.
"Mitaban" is not available in Canada so we have never used it. The most recent demodex case we brought in was completely bald except for a tuft of fur on the back of her neck. 95% of her coat was gone, she was covered in folds of demodex wrinkles, and open oozing infected sores all over her body from itching. She now, 3 months later, has a beautiful coat, wonderful temperament, and will go up for adoption in a month's time.
Combining the prescribed medication (which may be different in the U.S. than in Canada - ivermectin) with a daily diet of : 2 tsp seakelp, 1 tsp olive oil, 1 capsule vitamin E, 2 tsp pure purred pumpkin....mix with high quality WHEAT FREE kibble.
Keep the dog's stress LOW, keep their immune system HIGH, and demodex can be a problem of the past for your canine. More information can be requested from www.arfontario.com, a volunteer rescue group."

The "Red Mange" is from a mite that lives and breeds in the hair follicle, meaning this mite is below the skin surface. So unless a treatment is actually attacking the hair follicle itself it's not going to do any good. If a surface treatment does work, then it shouldn't be thought of as the Red Mange.
Also, once the dog has been declared mange free, meaning 0 living mites from a skin scraping, there is not a possible re infestation from those mites living in certain places. If a re infestation occurs, the treatment was not successful. Your dog is sick again because not all the mites were killed during treatment, not because you forgot to throw its bedding in the washer. I had to take my Buddy to the vet due to a secondary skin infection that almost took his life. I questioned the need to clean to prevent a reoccurrence and that was what I was told by the vet and it makes sense.
That particular mite is a mite they are born with but due to any number of reasons, poor diet, stress, sickness and so on, their bodies can't fight off that natural occurring mite and the mites go crazy. While the latest treatment is not cheap and trust me, I really can't afford it but I'll make due somehow, it is not a toxic dip or repeated shampoo's. It is a liquid you add to their food and it kills the mites from the inside and that is the best way to attack this particular mite."

[YEA] Jan B from NJ writes: "topical -red vinegar (acedic acid 5%) & lime juice(citric acid) full strength (lesser w/ open sores) w/ internal supplements garlic,digestive enzimes,caprylic acid(aminos acids from coconut !) cured skin fungus that mimics mange, swollen cracked paws, yellow crusts w/ flaking, that resemble cold sores on face, ears, tail and rabies shot location.. ' It's been 6 wks and went from sulfodine, to vicks, to sulfur w/ turpentine, and it helped a while, but didn't really help, until i started using the garlic supplements internally (about 125 mg. per 4-5 lb. of body wt. 2 X a day., (some dogs are sensitive w/ the runs) along w/ human grade enzymes from mason natural brand, i think i got from pathmark or walmart, hartz brand vitamins,about a 1/4 tab per 4-5 lb body wt. ( i do want to mention that i read niacinamide is lacking when there are skin ailments), which i noticed that none of the dry foods have it ! nor do the vitamins.. i did have some nekton-"s" bird vitamins that had it, so i started that ,just a pinch on the tongue daily, oh, and a 1/8 tsp of kelp in the food.watch for iodine allergy though !& crypilic acid called caprylin from synergy plus brand, because it is the yeast overgrowth that can show itself with skin ailments such as these, but until we get rid of the yeast overgrowth, the skin ailments will be sure to reappear.. it is the underlying culprit, that causes such misery for us and our pets !! that can cause all kinds of external ailments & allergies ! its important to know the ph though ,through morning urine & ph paper. it should be around neutral or just below (so i've read) w/ 7 being neutral ..i did start giving chicken w/ skin (roticery cooked not fried, because my snoop dog lost weight (bony) and wasn't absorbing nutrition)..along w/ a little canned food & dry- the wellness brand,& natures variety raw instinct i use, but i hear alot of benefit from raw foods.. natures variety has it.. i haven't tried yet, but it states that it takes 6 hrs for our dogs to digest dry and cooked canned foods, but just about half that w/ raw foods.. but my breeder said purina pro plan( more oils to protect the skin she said) but i think less grain is better..(cause they turn into sugar in the gut ,and that feeds the yeast.. no good ! boy oh boy what a trip its been !! the cracks finally started to heal, i didn't think it would ever get better, i do want to mention i used externally- np.27 for atheletes foot 2X wk.also, no liking, and that did seem to ease the cracks & sore spots between & on his paw pads! also miconozole creme for yeast infects. it keeps skin soft & is very soothing! i'm sure you girls know, for down below..!! i think i would have died w/ out it !!making sure they don't lick it.. sooooo good luck to all of you who are trying your darndest to help your pet get well w/ out alot of expense.i think i've covered it all .. good luck ... !! sincerely , jan b. there is one think i want to mention ( ha ha,) phytoplankton the newest green food, kind of like kelp,but kind of expensive.. i do want to try that myself...tcfn."

GLOVER' S SHAMPOO AND CONIDITIONER, SULPHUR

I decided To Shampoo my dog with Glover's Medicated Shampoo, and I brushed all the scabs and flakes off. I then greased him with the Glover's dandruf oil for scalp and hair. It's available in liquid. I first noticed the next day he was flea free. Three days later I repeated my steps, shampoo with the Glover's medicated shamoo, brush away flakes and scabs and oil him with the liquid medicine for scalp and hair. Well, the fleas are gone, and the mange is leaving. Hair has started growing back in areas and he isn't scratching all night. This is an enexpensive treatment and it works. ALso, I went to the feed store and got some sulfur and put it out in the backyard where the dog is. SO far so good"

This is from "Mar Vista Animal Medical Center." THIS MEDICATION IS NOT SAFE FOR USE IN COLLIES, SHETLAND SHEEPDOGS, AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS, OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOGS, AND SOME WOULD SAY, ANY HERDING BREED.
Sensitivity to ivermectin may not be predictably limited to "collie breeds" and thus it is often prudent to use a lower test dose before initiating the relatively high doses of ivermectin needed to treat demodicosis. Not all individuals of collie heritage are sensitive to ivermectin and a test is in development to determine whether an individual should be able to safely take ivermectin or not. There is a range of ivermectin doses used in the treatment of demodicosis and it seems that higher doses do clear infection faster than lower doses. This means that if a lower dose has been ineffective, a higher dose may still work. This does not mean that a pet owner should experiment with ivermectin doses on their own as there is some potential for lethal toxicity if this drug is not used appropriately."

[YEA] 07/22/2006: Janice from Cleveland, TX writes: "The only thing that has worked for me through many years with dogs, is Lytar. It has sulfer and tar in it and it kills the mites. It only takes two or three washings. I wash them every other day for a week then one more for good measure about two weeks later. The tar kills the mites and the sulfer stops the scabbing and flaking. In really bad cases, it may take longer."

[YEA] 07/06/2008: Jean from Franklin, WI writes: "A number of years ago, we acquired a German Shepherd with a severe case of mange, covering about 1/3 of his body. The vet's expensive prescription products hardly touched it. After a lot of study, I found a product generally used for horses to heal wounds and rashes. It's called Nu-Stock. It cleared the mange up after only 2 applications and it has never returned. His hair grew back very quickly, and although he wasn't too thrilled with the first application, he WANTED the second one very much. The itching stopped immediately.
A couple years later, my daughter had a rash that no doctor seemed able to get rid of. We tried the Nu-Stock and it cleared right up and hasn't returned.
I've had a problem with athlete's foot for years. I tried all the other remedies and it got rid of "most" of it, but there was a spot on the ball of one foot, including two toes where it just wouldn't go away. One day it occurred to me to try Nu-Stock. After just a couple of applications, the skin was back to normal, all itching gone, and it appears to be healing permanently. I think this is going to finally kill it!!!
Doing a little studying, I've found that Nu-Stock is 73% sulphur, 25% mineral oil, and 2% pine oil.
I've also discovered that there are other health products made for pets that aren't available for people. For instance, in the local Farm & Fleet, you can buy a cheap package of electrolytes for your pet's water. 16 oz. of DMSO was only $5. And there were other things as well, most of them in the section for horses! Isn't it amazing that you can buy products for your pets, cheaply, and you can't get prescription products that work for yourself???"
EC: Yes, agreed! Years ago we bought a 5 lb container of glucosamine at a tack shop in Burbank, CA for about $45 to give to our dog for his arthritis. The tack shop also sold chondroitin in large containers too.

I had no clue what it was, but the poor little guy was a mess! he was completely bald and scabby.... I took him home with meds from vet and thought what the heck am I getting myself into. Well 4 months later.... I researched it and its a immune desease more then anything....I started bathing him regularly in oatmeal shampoo, giving hime lots of salmon and garlic and then I statrted giving him atratylodes rhizome 5gms daily also asian ginseng root, licorice root, and ginger root.... I took him for a check-up a month after I started all this with him and the vet couldn't believe the difference!He has hair again ....he has gained 12oz's and is doing much better I have also heard acne meds work it's a long road with this stuff but definitely working to boost the immune system is the key."

[YEA] Stephanie from Pipe Creek writes: "Hi everyone i just thought i would share my mange treatment with everyone. i have a great dane named emilli beautiful girl she came down with mange really bad and she was taken to a vet and they said to go ahead and put her to sleep because she isn't going to get better so i said let me think it over. i took her home and then the next day was on the way to the vets office when i broke down and started crying because emilli is only a baby and didn't even have a chance so i turned around and went back home called the vet and said i can't do it i am going to see what i can find for her so i called the breeder i got her from and told her what happened and she said for the first time in almost 30 years of breeding danes, she is seeing mange come up on them so we got together and looked up different things and decided to try a mixture of things -- almost everything is cheap.
Go to the nearest feed store and get yellow sulfur for pets then get pine sol and mineral oil mix one small bag of sulfur with two containers of mineral oil and 2 cups of pine sol (yes the cleaning stuff) you will need an air tight 1 gallon container to save the extra in. it is kind of yellow and feels really disgusting and rub it in really go to the dogs skin anywhere and every where even on their butts and peepee's because they can get it there to then go to the feed store and get ivomec for cattle and swine but do not inject it give it .1cc for every 10 lbs.give them this by mouth this also works for heartguard so it is expensive but you don't need to buy the heartguard or wormer. you will also need to get penicillin ask the feed store which one is best for dogs you will need to give them 1cc for every 20lbs into their muscle in the back leg ask someone who knows how to give penicillin to show you first. we have cured 8 dogs in 2-3 months by doing this. if you have tried everything else then try this -- it should work.

I found it helped but never cured and also was very difficult to apply to a large dog. Also i believe if I heal him from within it would be a long term solution. From what i read mange is due to w eakened system allowing the mites that are there anyway, but in very small numbers, to multiply into an infectious state.
By giving him all raw meat and bones and occasionally putting in shredded carrot and egg in his food, it helped. But what has finally done it is putting MSM powder in his food an drinking water. It is such a relief after struggling with this problem for around a year. i had seen two vets and got products sent from overseas. But the diet and the MSM is definitely the answer. It overall creates a healthier dog anyway. It is to me the only way, as washes and chemicals dont change the enviroment internally that let it happen initially"

She would go to a vet for 3 weeks, come back with no hair. the hair grew back 6weeks later and then the mange came back. after 2 times I was desperate. I researched out a holistic vet I found in N Miami beach (Dr. Bernstein). he and worked very closely with remedies and baths of coconut oil. he now tells me that she was hours from death. I thought of putting her down but I just could not give up on her. I got my remedy kit from him and fed her one kind of meat and nothing else. her ears were so swollen they didn't bend, her eyes were so swollen she could not see out of them and the puss oozing was terrible. her skin was bleeding and scabby and she was all bones. We used hepar, sulphur, other remedies. A year later she is happy playing, her hair has grown back, she looks great and I am so happy i didnt have to put her down. EC: Hmmm.... the name of your vet sounds very familiar. In fact, it may have been 10 years ago that I called Dr. Bernstein for a consultation about my malamute, who was having terrible neck problems. (I lost the name and # years ago unfortunately.) He also recommended a raw food diet and some homeopathic remedies, which did wonders for Rajah. It was plyable and stuck to skin and fur. I dont know exact ammounts sorry. But it worked and we never had problems again."
