Hidradenitis Suppurativa Remedies

Updated: 11/19/2009

rss feed

Hidradenitis is a chronic disease of the apocrine glands (sweat glands found on certain parts of the body) and hair follicles. These glands become plugged or clogged. The condition causes chronic scarring and pus formation in the underarm, groin and/or inner thigh areas. In women it can also occur under the breasts. Hidradenitis begins with a red, tender swelling in the groin or armpit. Over time the lesions enlarge and burst open at the surface, draining clear to yellow fluid.

The poorly understood disease is under-reported by those who suffer from it. However, there is some research suggesting changes in diet, warm compresses and baths, and zinc gluconate supplements can relieve symptoms, bring about remission, and/or minimize recurrence.

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/23/2009: Cherie from Brockton, Ma writes: "I have had HS for 10yrs now. I've had surgeries which have helped it subside in certain areas. I have read on here that some people use dial soap and it didnt work...you need to use the DIAL LIQUID ANTIBACTERIAL Soap/bodywash. I use it and it helps a lot. I also found that using Gold Bond Baby powder triple action relief is a huge helper when irritation occurs. As for flair-ups...I just deal with them..it's painful but I do what I was taught to do; keep the area clean, dry and use Bacitracin ointment and I stay strong. Thats all I know how to do!"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/24/2009: Wossta from Jackson, MS replies: "Hi, i have been dealing with HS since I was nine years old, I am now 33. I have went to doctors after doctors, and I have had my sweat glands removed from my left arm pit and my left breast in which I have not had an outbreak in those areas since, but the cyst, boils, or legions have gotten worse in the right breast and arm pit and there now coming in my buttock area. I think my case is the worse because I have dealt with the disease for 24 years, and did not have a clue about what I had until about five years ago, and I have tried everything under the sun. After my surgery the doctor told me to use dail soap (antibacterial only) and hibiclens which is an antiseptic/antimicrobial skin cleanser that you can purchase from Walgreens. It cuts down of the spread of bateria in the infected area. I can honestly say prayer and hibiclens has made it more managable for me. Another helpful hint is when using hibiclens the order is not noticable."

08/07/2009: Contessa from Jackson, Ms replies: "My question is for Wossta from Jackson, MS. I have your same exact problem but I have yet to find the right doctor here in Jackson. I have had HS since I was about 11yrs. old although it was no diagnosed until I was 21! Now over the past 5 yrs. my condition has gotten so much worse that I have lost my ability to function in my everyday life. Please email me the names of any doctors that you have been to that were able to help you. Also, any medicines that have had a positive effect on your condition. I need any and all help from anyone. Doctors seem to minimize the effect this has on my life and the server pain I experience daily with no relief. Just one abscess after the next all in different areas."

09/02/2009: Btw from Seattle, Wa replies: "I have used the crystal before and it works great, however there are two forms I have come across one in a more classic shape and the other in a ball, I recomend the actuall deorderant and not the ball as the ball can become rigid and very painfull to inflamed skin."

[YEA]  02/05/2009: Ashley from San Diego, CA writes: "I have seen two doctors in the last two weeks in regards to my HS. I learned two things from these people. The first is that Dial soap is actually bad for the area. Dial is a detergent based soap which actually breaks down the skin and weakens its defense power. The both suggested Lever 2000 which is moisturizer based. I have actually seen a huge difference in my affected areas since I switched to the Lever 2000. I have also been struggling with the odor that has been associated with my HS and had seen somewhere something about a crystal deodorant. I did find the product and began using it. I asked both doctors their thought and both were rather excited to hear about the product and said that it may actually aid in the healing process as well. The crystal deodorant is a stick of mineral salts that is dampened for use. I found it available at both the grocery store and Wal-Green Pharmacy.

Good luck and hope this helps."

[YEA]  03/24/2009: Sonia from Christchurch, New Zealand replies: "I have had severe problems with HS and a couple of years ago required surgery to mend the lesions in my arm pits. I have since gotten onto using an antibacterial soap along with an antiseptic tea tree oil cream and had very few problems since. This has usually been when I have not kept up this routine. This indicates that it must be working. It is better by far than the countless antibiotics I was having prior.

At times I feel I smell of eucalyptus leaves (an Australian plant favoured by koalas) but it is well worth it and it smells much better than the putrid smell of a HS wound."

[YEA]  10/14/2008: Danielle from Fair Oaks, Ca writes: "a few months back i was on here and started taking turmeric spice in warm water, after a couple of weeks i was feeling better and had less "hurts" but one morning i got sick and couldnt take the turmeric since then. my hurts have gotten bad again so i decided i would take the pills, just started today! this time i will be taking 2 pills 2x's a day. and washing with plain old dial soap. after reading about the dial soap i did realize my HS got worse when i started using more body washes and not dial bar soap. i hope everyone that has this problem finds this website, and i would never wish this on anyone! the pain is unimaginable at times, as u all know! good luck to everyone! email me if anyone has any questions, or just plain support. bye!"

[NAY]  01/11/2009: Penny from Portage, WI replies: "Antibacterial soap: Liquid vs. bar. I am so thankful I read this! I have been so frustrated lately, as things have gotten worse. After reading this, I am wondering if it is not just a coincidence that things started getting worse at the same time that I started using Dial liquid soap! I am getting the bar tomorrow!"

[NAY]  03/13/2009: Shantavia from Miami, Florida replies: "Thank you for having this up there. I realized after about a month of using dial soap on and off that it has made my HS worst as well. I began to get more than one break out under my arm. I am going back to my regular soap and going to use colloidal silver to make it better."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/19/2009: Brandy from Troy, Mi replies: "I use Cetaphil Antibacterial soap. It is a bit more expensive than the Dial, but it works well for me. My issue is that washing twice a day makes my skin uncomfortably dry and itchy. Is it safe to use moisturizer on the affected areas? I have Cetaphil moisturizer - it is supposed to be pretty basic with no added perfumes or such. I just started taking Zinc Gluconate and Vitamin E to see what that will do to help. I have had success with taking Yaz birth control - the affected area is still spreading and infected, but I have not had any huge lesions in a long time and very few that break open and leak. I am also going to start taking Turmeric to see how that helps."

[YEA]  03/27/2008: Brian from Tampa, Florida writes: "Ailment: HIDRADENITIS SUPPURTIVA Remedy: ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP!

Ive been reading all the wonderful remedies and suggestions here on your site when i came across a section dedicated to HIDRADENITIS SUPPURTIVA and I just had to share my story as well.

I have a congenital birth defect that caused me to be born missing my left foot, I received my prosthesis by my first b-day. I grew up with NO problems with my leg what so ever and never considered myself to have any limitations. That is until i was in my very early 20's and began getting (what i thought at the time were) cists on my stump. This issue became worse and worse with each passing year and after doctors Lansing two or three of them I couldn't handle the recovery of each one anymore so I started dealing with them myself as they would appear. Nothing I did would work other then forcing my leg on, no matter how swollen I was and forcing them to break so that the horrible pain would go away. You see as anyone with HIDRADENITIS SUPPURTIVA knows the pain is unbearable so imagine having to walk on it. Most people who have HIDRADENITIS SUPPURTIVA suffer these sores in their armpits, groin, and under their breasts. I had never had any sores in any of those places. Only on my leg. Then as my leg got worse I began to get them under my arms as well.

After suffering through the pain for a few years I finally realized this issue I was having was way bigger then I could handle myself and truly feared doing more damage to my leg so I finally began seeing doctors to get answers. Honestly, this was a total waist of my time and my money!! I went to over 10 doctors, 5 dermatologists and NONE of them had any idea what was causing my sores. After being told that I would have to have the remainder of my leg removed, told that it was my hygiene problem and that I wasn't bathing properly, being told to stop wearing any prosthetics and be bound to a wheel chair for the rest of my life & even being told that I was too vain and needed to get over myself and realize that there was no need to wear a prosthetic I finally gave up on doctors once again and went back to dealing with the pain myself.

At that point in my life I was getting anywhere for 4 – 5 sores on my leg per week and had lost two jobs due to the inability to wear my prosthesis. I was just about ready to give into the doctor (dermatologist) who wanted me to have my leg amputated when I met a friend of a friend who asked me what was wrong with my leg that I wasn't able to put it on. After talking to her for only a few minutes and her begging me to see my sores she shockingly lifted her shirt and showed me the scars under her arms and explained HIDRADENITIS SUPPURTIVA to me. She had been diagnosed 5 years before after having two surgeries to remove her sweat glands.

I literally began to cry!! Finally I knew what was wrong with me....after 10 doctors and 5 dermatologists there was someone who knew what the hell it was. WOW! The next day I made an appointment at the dermatologists who wanted me to have my leg amputated and told him of HIDRADENITIS SUPPURTIVA. He and 4 other dermatologists after him had never heard of it and didn't have any answers as to how to treat this condition. Finally I found this amazing dermatologists who did know and I am now happy to say that 6 years later I have only had 2 sores and those failed in comparison to the size or pain of those in the past. The only remedy I have used in the past 6 years is ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP!!! Not the liquid or body washes the only one that works is the good ole fashion antibacterial bar soap. It is truly a miracle worker where my sores are concerned and I swear by it. I have even gone on vacations and didn't have ___ soap and immediately after only one day of not showering using ____ I have gotten a sore.

I hope in some small way this story helps someone else out there cause I know how hard it was going through day by day in pain and no one having the answers to help!! Good Luck!!"

[YEA]  07/28/2008: Sara from Corpus Christi, Texas replies: "Tired of seeing the derm doctor for H.S. so I tried the dial soap (gold bar) and tea tree oil. Incredibly, within a couple of days, the lesions had decreased in size and pain. I also tried hot baths in epsom salts. A week and a half later, I feel like myself which I had not felt like in at least a year. Thank you all for your wonderful information. I am so thankful!"

12/15/2008: Zulfikar Panjwani from Atlanta, Georgia replies: "Hi Brian, I read your story here and many others I have had this problem since the age of 15. I am now 33 and still used to keep getting these cysts in my underarms and tail bone. When I read remedies on earth clinic I right away started with Dial Soap and Turmeric Pills. few days later I noticed that the boils did come back but much smaller and less painful. Now i have stopped using Dial soap but still take Turmeric Pills 2 X 1 daily as a routine. Being from India we always believed that Turmeric has antiseptic properties and I know now for sure it does.

...Just 2 capsules 2 times a day for a months and then 2 just before you sleep. Hope this helps."

ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP, IODINE

1 YEA

[YEA]  07/25/2009: Karen from Nashville, TN writes: "Here's what I have done to completely stop my Hidradenitis now for nearly a month and just for the record, I have had boils in different stages at all times. Some newly forming all the way to healing purple ones and in between. I have NONE now and my scars are actually getting a chance to heal. Morning and evening, I take a body brush and brush under my arms in a circular pattern all over, then reverse the pattern and do it again, both sides. Then I wash with ___ bar soap (antibacterial ____ ___), dry them then swab my armpits all over with Iodine. I use a q-tip to do that. I use the old brown stuff and so far it hasn't stained my clothes. After I put it on, I get in front of a fan and let it dry, which doesn't take long for Iodine, then put my ___'s natural deodorant on. I'm thinking I can go back to regular deodorant now. ___'s isn't so good on me. I get BO regardless by the end of the day. I was desperate and thinking it was my deodorant, but now I don't think that was causing it because I was still breaking out after I switched. You have to be diligient and don't forget. I have forgotten the morning or afternoon swabbing and was ok but I forgot to do it a whole day and started breaking out again. I read somewhere that researchers think it's caused by sweat glands becoming blocked and the dry brushing loosens it all up. I use a natural fiber brush. You can buy one in ____ in the section where they sell perfume and lotion. I would think any stiff brush would do. I figured after that the iodine would kill any bacteria waiting to get in. That's what surgeons swab you with before they make their incision. Lot of people are allergic to it though and I'm not sure what the alternative would be if you are allergic. If it stops working, I will come back and let everyone know, but so far it's worked for about a month now. I hope it brings relief to others like it has for me. If you're allergic to iodine, google search to see what the alternative to iodine is. I'm sure you'll find it somewhere on the internet."

ANTIOXIDANTS, VEGETARIAN DIET, HERBS

[YEA]  09/14/2008: Kim from Savannah, Georgia writes: "I went to a naturopath after suffering from H.S. for the last 20 years (since 6th grade) I found taking a trustworthy brand of antioxidants twice a day with food helped tremendously. I also take Echinacea and Goldenseal and eat a primarily vegetarian and organic diet. More than anything I believe a 12/12 probiotic supplement taken daily to be the most helpful for my HS. Do avoid smoking cigarettes or anything for best results. I plan on taking the turmeric and trying the tea tree oil. I experience the pain and embarrassment of this disease every day whether it's because of the scars or an outbreak. Good luck to all."

AVOID BUBBLE BATHS

1 SIDE EFFECT

[SIDE EFFECTS]  07/04/2009: Sherry from Central City, Ky writes: "I used to get boils in the groin area and just could not figure out why. I finally figured out what was causing this ailment after years and years of wondering. I had for years used bubble bath and I used many different ones throughout the years. Once I ran out and forgot to get some and again kept forgetting to pick some up. I didn't get any boils for a while. I bought some more bubble bath and I again got boils. I finally realized that whatever ingredient was in these bubble baths was causing my problem and I stopped using it altogether thank goodness. I am now boil free. So if you think that products are not harmful something as simple as bubble bath, think again. I won't use it ever again. I am a bath person as I like to soak and relax in a tub and I loved my bubbles.. but have learned to live without them."

10/25/2009: Blr from Moreno Valley, Ca replies: "More info on the black onion seed please. How do you take it, hot or cold water? do you grind it up? At this time I will try anything please help. I have a very bad case. Thanks"

10/26/2009: Dolly from Cairo, Egypt replies: "Hi, i read the post about "Black onion seed" you use it by getting 1 tsp to a boil in one glass of water keep it boiling until the white part of the seed shows, let cool off and drink it, its very simple you can add honey for taste. There are some people who prepare a lot to last a whole week, its best done fresh in my opinion - I have not used it yet, but I was told its very good for HS and it helps stopping the boils from occurring.

I use turmeric and sometimes add burdock root powder with it- 1 tsp turmeric 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp honey sometimes I add 1/2 tsp of burdock root and sometimes I use a few drops of olive oil.

I use this without the burdock root daily 2 or 3 times a day. I also use another mixture, 1 lemon with turmeric without the cinnamon and honey - lemon kills the taste and strong smell of turmeric and helps boost the immune system.

You can find the Black Onion Seed, in any middle eastern, Lebanese, herb shop.

I hope this helps someone out there, good luck.

Dolly"

BLEACH BATH, CLINDAMYCIN, PREDNISONSE

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/29/2009: Jo from Lafayette, LA writes: "I've only had HS for about a year now. After having about 3 lesions lanced and seeing so many different doctors, the dermatologist that I went to diagnosed me right away. He put me on an antibiotic(Doryx) and I started using Hibiclens. The antibiotic helps a lot since I was getting these lesions (boils) quite often. Instead of using the Hibiclens, I now soak for 15 to 20 minutes in a tub of water as hot as you can stand it with 2/3 of a cup of Clorox bleach once a week---more often when I have a flair up. The bleach helps to kill bacteria. I also use Clindamycin lotion after my bath at night. The HS affects my perivaginal region. When I do have a flair up my doctor puts me on Prednisone for a couple of days which softens the lesion and helps it to go away---much better and a lot less painful than having them lanced and less scarring. It's not a complete cure for HS but it sure makes it easier to deal with. Hope this helps!"

I'm 32 years old and I'm suffering HS for 10 years, I had read and try every antibiotic, and some natural remedies, but my worse situation now is, My husband is starting with the problem in his testicles after he started to drink ACV to lose weight? and I feel terrible and I don't knew the HS could be contagious.

every month before my period I have the ball, I'm using with good result a silver gel, the name is "colloidal silver" help me a lot to calm and restructure the skin and the ball gone after 3 days.

I hope you can try the colloidal silver.
I have try a lot remedies but the ball coming 3 or 4 months later.

I'm feel crazy because if I'm depress, sad, worry, angry even excited or happy the ball coming up, I'm can't stand my hormonal disorder.

Please try the colloidal silver maybe can help you.

Carol"

EC: "the ball" = large, recurring boil

02/11/2009: Sarah from Brisbane, Australia replies: "Hi - just reading the above comment on your husband getting cysts similar to HS.

I've been an HS sufferer for many years now but this message rang an alarm bell as my husband is a testicular cancer survivor. PLEASE get the doctor to check his cysts to make sure it is not testicular cancer.

The doctor will be able to see right away if the cyst is a tumour or not.

HS is NOT contagious and his problem is unrelated so please don't feel guilty that you have given him something - you haven't.

I can't stress enough how common testicular cancer is in men or the necessity to have any lumps in the area checked. TS is a VERY fast cancer, but also one of the most survivable if you catch it fast."

04/18/2009: Beanie from Ontario, California replies: "In respnse to the lady that has HS and her husband now has it too...I have suffered with HS for 14 years, and i had to diagnose it myself (then my doctor said "oh you are right...UGH). anyway, I recently learned that a friend of mine suffers from what sounded to be a similar condition; however, her doctors did something that mine have NEVER done, which is to culture the bacteria. Turns out that she actually has community-acquired MRSA, which IS contagious. Oddly, my husband had a lesion on his inner thigh a few months ago and "suggested" that I was contagious (jokingly, of course). Now I'm wondering if maybe my problem is CA-MRSA, not HS, and am going to have my dr. culture my wound next time I have a flare-up that becomes severe enough to need his attention. Anyway, just thought that in addition to prior comments, this might be a good thing to have checked out as well in case it is something contagious such as MRSA, since their presentations can sometimes look similar."

09/15/2009: Kerry from Queensland, Australia replies: "I agree with you i was diagnosed with HS about 6yrs ago i have suffered with this for 10yrs i recently moved home and went to a new doctor about something unrelated (i gave up going to doctors about my HS along time ago) anyway i asked my new dc if the present condition could be related to my HS this dr took a swab and sent it away to be cultered the results have just come back today and i actually have MRSA! I'm happy and angry at the same time, that no other dr has ever done this when they have very similar symptoms im just hoping and praying now that the antibiotics i have recived today will put an end to this misery."

10/05/2009: Kate from Pensacola, Florida replies: "I have been diagnosed with both MRSA and HS. The symptoms of the lesions are slightly different, so stopping treatment for one because you think all symptoms are caused by the other might make things worse. When I have had MRSA lesions, they occur anywhere (mostly my legs or face). If they do open or drain, the drainage is thick with a greenish tint, and sometimes you can see the infection beneath the skin. When the wound is completely cleaned of bacteria, there is a definite hole where the infection was. With the HS, the lesions are boils. Just wanted to let you know that it is possible to have both (as I do)so don't neglect your HS remedies if you have a flare-up of MRSA. The MRSA antibiotics don't help with the HS at all, or at least they didn't for me. And I wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions, I've never found a better place for info about HS."

I'VE DECIDED TO TRY A COLONIC, I REALIZE THAT WITH OUR FIBERLESS, AND NUTRIENT LACKING DIETS THAT OUR IMMUNE SYSTEMS AND INTERNAL HEALTH COULD BE CONTRIBUTING TO THIS DISORDER. THE BUILDUP OF TOXINS OVER THE YEARS FROM NOT FULLY EXPELLING FECAL MATERIAL COULD BE CAUSING OUR IMMUNE SYSTEMS NOT TO PROPERLY PERFORM, THEREFORE ALLOWING SKIN DISORDERS SUCH AS ACNE, HS, ANEMIA FROM MALABSORPTION OF NUTRIENTS, FATIGUE, INSOMNIA, AND SO MANY OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS.

A HEALTHY DIET FREE FROM REFINED SUGARS, AND PROCESSED FOODS, AND PLENTY OF WATER COULD ONLY HELP THIS DISORDER. I'M GUILTY OF TERRIBLE EATING HABITS AND SMOKING WHICH COULD ONLY BE CONTRIBUTING TO THIS PROBLEM. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT A COLONIC WHICH IS LIKE AN INTENSE ENEMA RIDS OUR BODY OF OLD FECAL MATERIAL, PARASITES, AND TOXINS THAT HAVE BUILT UP IN THE COLON OVER THE YEARS FROM UNHEALTHY EATING HABITS, I THINK THAT COLONICS AND A DRASTIC CHANGE IN EATING HABITS CAN DRASTICALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE SEVERITY OF HS.

I THINK THAT ANTIBIOTICS AND SURGERY ARE ONLY A BANDAID TO THE TRUE CAUSE OF HS. GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM IS THE ONLY WAY TO PINPOINT THE CAUSE OF HS. I WIL TRY THE COLONIC AND MAKE HEALTHY DIET CHOICES AND LET YOU KNOW THE OUTCOME AS SOON AS I SEE RESULTS. I HOPE THAT SOMEONE SUFFERING WITH HS AS I HAVE OVER THE YEARS WILL READ THIS AND GIVE OTHERS IDEAS ON WHAT WORKED FOR THEM, TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS."

DEODORANT CONNECTION

2 YEA

05/17/2009: Jan from Punta Gorda, Florida writes: "I have had Hidradenitis Suppurativia for many years. My doctor told me many years ago to use Clinique antiperspirant roll-on deodorant and I no longer have this problem under my arms but in other areas I still suffer from HS. They also have this deodorant for Men. This deodorant sometimes leaves markes on your clothes when you do not let it dry.

I also use Elizabeth Arden "Green Tea Cream Roll On". It does not leave marks on your blouses, etc when you roll it on. This works for me. It is pricey per bottle but it works."

[YEA]  09/01/2007: Jackie from Chicago, IL writes: "Hi. I wrote in last month about the wonders of baking soda for underarm body odor. Well I still agree that it's a great remedy, however I had a side effect that I wanted to share. A few days ago I shaved and after getting out of the shower, put baking soda under my arms. I guess I had knicked an area because it hurt like crazy after the baking soda hit it. That night, I started to feel shooting pain in the same area... it lasted all night. The next morning, still in pain, I looked in the mirror at my armpit and discovered a big ole boil forming. I am guessing that a chunk of baking soda got in and irritated the area. Knowing how great turmeric is for cysts and boils, I immediately went and got some warm water and put a teaspoon of turmeric in it and chugged it down. The shooting pain stopped in about 3 hours and the next day the boil was half the size. 2 days later it is gone. My suggestion is not to apply baking soda to your armpits if you have knicked them while shaving! I continue to use the b.s. but haven't had any more inflammation in that area."

07/31/2008: Rebecca from Woodbridge, VA replies: "Could you please email me, I would like to know if I could ask you a couple of questions concerning your allergy. I think that I may have found that the alluminum may be in other products, such as my body wash, etc. Thanking you in advance."

08/01/2008: Sam from NY, NY replies: "Baking Soda for BO- what to do when you shave

If Baking Soda is used after shaving your armpits will become extremely sensitive even irritated. I use VCO after shaving for a few days until any small wounds (invisible to the eyes but there nonetheless) heals. VCO's effect is not as long lasting as Baking Soda - so on a very hot day a few application might be needed. However, VCO expedites the healing then one can return to the Baking Soda. Hope this helps!

Anyone has a better interim solution than VCO - please share.Thank you."

[YEA]  08/11/2007: Chris from paris, texas writes: "i used to get horrible boils (golf ball to baseball size) under my arm pits. i had a doctor suggest that i may have a condition known as (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hidradenitis-suppurativa/DS00818) Hidradenitis Suppurativa, he said this was incurable. i do not believe in incurable conditions. After lots of research and a trip to a local allergy specialist i found that was actually allergic to aluminum zirconium, a very common ingredient in antiperspirants (see http://health.howstuffworks.com/question627.htm for more information) i switched to an antiperspirant withouts actually allergic to aluminum zirconium and the boils stopped.
My allergy Dr. told me that alot of people actually get misdiagnosed with Hidradenitis Suppurativa because of boils in the armpit when all that is wrong with them is their choice of antiperspirant. i also want to point out that i have seen this ingredient listed on several feminine hygiene products for moisture control."

DIETARY CHANGES

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/14/2009: Tony from Sydney, AU writes: "I have just stumbled across this site and am so happy to read all these cures i have yet to try, but for these 4 years i have realized that some things that i eat also affect the site that i got on my neck, for instance deep fried products, white flour products and anything that has hydrogenated oils and sometimes some red meat that i have eaten and many others that i do not realize. I found that cutting these foods out of my diet has greatly decreased the severity of HS but will not cure. But now hopefully i can try some of these remedies that might work and hope that they will work for everyone because none of us need to have these red spots on us."

ELIMINATE CAFFEINE

2 YEA

[YEA]  11/04/2008: Sarah Simpson from Brighton, UK writes: "Giving up coffee gave me back some control of the size of my sores.

I have suffered with HS for a long time and had to have an operation on my armpit 8 years ago but was not actually diagnosed until much later. Once I knew what I was dealing with I started to use tea tree oil and echinacea. But to be honest, particularly when I was stressed, the painful sores would still emerge. Finally a dear friend read on the net that coffee can have a massive effect on sufferers. So I gave up coffee (was on 3 or 4 large expresso's a day). And it worked. I'd occasionally get the odd little murmur of an outbreak but was able to control it with a dab or Tea Tree and up until this weekend, I'd been clear of any real offending sores.

Unfortunately I realise that I've been gradually reintroducing coffee into my diet over the last year (hubby got a coffee machine for Christmas) and I am now suffering for it. Safe to say, I'm off coffee again and will try the Turmeric and the other suggestions to deal with my current and extremely uncomfortable sore. I've also changed my deodorant and now use crystal spray which has been great. What a wonderful site. Thank you all for sharing and making me feel less of an outsider."

[YEA]  11/14/2008: Linda from Glendale, CA replies: "I was advised by my acupuncturist last year, after having been diagnosed with hidradentis suppurtiva (basically means recurring boils in areas around hair follicles and sweat glands...all the fun spots)to eliminate caffeine. I did, and for the past year, I have had no boils. Recently, I started drinking caffeine in small quantities and now have a new boil. Nothing else in my diet changed, so the connection is pretty clear.

No more caffeine for me.

I am trying the tumeric remedy now for the current boil as I detox from caffeine again.

Also, laser hair removal in areas like the armpits has been advised, the theory being eliminate the hair follicle, reduce the likelihood of a boil from an ingrown hair. I will be trying this."

05/10/2009: Joanne from Newcastle, England replies: "Hi ive recently been diagnosed with HS after 20 yrs of symptoms. I have had a recent flare up in my arpit area and my buttocks which I can only remember 2 occasions of this happening. I have been drinking a lot of coke lately and wonder if this is a trigger of my HS. I am currently using evening primrase oil which is an anti-inflammatory and have started using tumeric powder, which has good anti-bacterial properties, as does garlic. i have only had the tumeric once as i thought it tasted vile, but im sure i will become a fan of it as it seams to be very benificial to HS sufferers. good luck."

ESSENTIAL OILS

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/30/2009: DJ from Pensacola, FL writes: "I went through a period where I was getting genital boils or pimples that would be very painful and sometimes had to be lanced. I began to get them with ever increasing frequency until finally I was getting them every 2-3 weeks. They would take 7-10 days to develop and resolve and I would be relieved only to get a new one within a short time. That made it kind of difficult to work and I used up a lot of vacation time and annoyed my employers. The gynecologist thought I had something called hydradenitis suppurativa. My dermatologist agreed. There was no real treatment, so they said.

Looking it up on the internet I found lots of painful stories but not much help to be had. I did come across a doctor's explanation to a poster, though, that I would remember later. The doctor said that the problem was that the oil in the hair follicles was too thick and was clogging up the pores because the poster was not getting enough essential oils. That made no sense to me so I forgot about it. Later, at the height of my boil problems I decided that losing weight would help so I started the Atkins diet program. If you do it right, you take their supplementary oil capsules - esential fatty acids, ie. Omega Oils. I did that. After a period of months, I suddenly realized that I had not had a boil in a long time and I remembered that doctor's comment. Eventually I stopped the diet and stopped taking the oils. The boils came back. I started taking the oils again - they went away.

Connecting the dots, I now make sure that I supplement with Omega oils regularly and that keeps the little beasties away. If I get one, which is rare now, I usually realize that I haven't been taking my oils again and when I restart, they disappear. We need these essential fatty acids anyway for other reasons so why not? To me, it seems a reasonable trade and a very easy cure for a tough problem that I have discovered is a lot more common among women than I would have expected."

GET A CORRECT DIAGNOSIS

2 YEA

[YEA]  01/18/2007: Jan from Perth, Australia writes: "Several people have mentioned cures that did not work for their boils - particularly those people who had a number of boils in their armpit, breast or groin area. They may want to check to see if they have Hidradenitis Suppurativa which presents like boils in those areas but is not curable. There is a lot of information about HS on the web and it seems to be often misdiagnosed so it may be worth seeing a dermatologist for a second opinion."
