I just tried the oil thing but with olive oil. I put a good coat on and brushed with the thing on back of the toothbrush. I left it on for about 3mins then put another coat on and brushed again. Left it on for another 3 mins then I added toothpaste to breakup the oil and brushed again. I immediately rinsed and my tongue was beautiful and pink. I had never seen it this clear I almost took a pic to send to friends then I thought of how stupid that may look lol

Yes, you are dehydrated. Visit the watercure online and you will find out. Celtic sea salt is needed to keep your body hydrated. Otherwise you allow your body to be leached of vitamins and minerals. That is the beginning of many diseases. Our medical system profits from it.

Great to hear the salt worked for you? How long did it last? Did your family notice your breath wasfresher? (I am concerned that the reason people instantly get pink tongues is because the salt burned their tongue and that's just blood under the surface showing.

Acidophilus helped me cure a white tongue. It took about a month of taking a high count of acidophilus first thing in the morning and last thing at night before I saw results. What makes it come back: Dairy! Hydrogen peroxide helps clear the tongue, but probiotics and diet changes necessary.

For years I stuggled with white tongue. I tried so many different therapies from this site and others with marginal effect. It appears I found the problem for me... An allergy to dairy. After about a month avoiding dairy I have a healthy pink tongue, no more phlegm in my throat, and a happy outlook. I don't know if this will help anyone, but hopefully it will... there may be nothing that you can put in your body to cure your white tongue, but maybe there's something you can stop putting in your body that will help.

Make sure you buy RAW, LIVE, UNPASTEURIZED sauerkraut sold at health food stores- not the processed kind with no nutrients sold at supermarkets!

Chinese Medicine Diagnosis of the Tongue

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to post another interesting interview with Dr. Victor Zeines who is a dentist who actually left the profession dismayed by the standard methods of dental practice. During that interim he left, became a psychotherapist and was led on a path to learn all sorts of information on alternative tooth care. Re- invigorated with this knowledge, he returned to dentistry to serve his patients with herbs, nutrition, vitamins, etc. And their teeth thrived. He also speaks on the coating of the tongue, the various colors, the thickness, the state of the tongue which is all information he learned from studying Chinese medicine. The tongue is extremely important in diagnosing one's health in Chinese medicine and can help indicate where problems may lie within your body. I do hope you take the opportunity to hear what he has to say:

Fantastic overnight results by using a small amount of probiotic dissolved in a spoonful of water and flooded over the tongue. I've been taking probiotics regularly with no effect, but this method introduces the probiotic strains in mouth, tongue and throat, instead of down in the gut.

The Cure: Brush teeth. Open a high-potency probiotic capsule. Dump a small amount (about 1/4 the contents) into a tablespoon of water and stir to dissolve. Reseal the capsule and swallow it as normal. Now take the tblspoon of dissolved probiotic and let it flood over your tongue and down your throat. Swallow. Go to bed. Observe pink tongue in morning.

I have no idea as yet whether this will have a lasting effect -- but I'll gladly do this daily if needed. This is the first time in a very long while that I have not had a white tongue without vigorous brushing, scraping and gagging... and THAT method was never more than partially successful.

High potency Probiotics are usually found in a refrigerator case in pharmacy or healthfood store (e. g. Wholefoods).

Hi Carly, I personally would not use glycerin in my mouth. I suppose if you want to use it for your tongue, keep it isolated to that only and then rinse. When I was doing research on natural care for the teeth and re-mineralizing tooth enamel, it was emphasized not to use glycerin which is in almost all toothpaste. What it does is coat the teeth and the saliva cannot reach them to re-mineralize and heal the teeth. Anyway, just a thought, Lisa

Lie Bumps
Posted by Anonymosaurus Rex (Somewhere, Alone, Listening To Radiohead) on 08/30/2012

Lie bumps or pimples on the tongue are almost completely overlooked in the medical profession. They are known as either eruptive lingual papillitis or fungiform papillary glossitis. There is one study indicating that lie bumps may be contagious, but there is also some evidence that it can be caused by irritation and minor damage to the tongue. People who have eczema, asthma or other allergies are more likely to suffer from lie bumps.

I have asthma and allergies, and in my experience with lie bumps I have gotten them from scraping my tongue on my teeth (for example, if there is food stuck in my teeth) quite often. I also experienced oral thrush once in my life due to being extremely run down. I was also dating a person who was rather yeasty at the time, as well. While I had oral thrush I had many painful lie bumps on my tongue. This may seem to back up the idea that lie bumps are contagious, but that I had lie bumps for on occasions many years before this it would seem that I caught it a long time before then or that it is something else.

I have noticed that if I eat more sugar, I will get lie bumps more regularly. In my opinion, sugar, thrush, and all-too-often tongue abrasions along it seems as though lie bumps are opportunistic yeast outbreaks that take root in any small nick or scrap in the tongue, provided that your oral condition are favourable for any yeastie-beasties.

You need to avoid high levels of carbohydrates in your mouth, or at least keep it to the shortest amount of time. This means you need to:
- reduce your sugar intake
- chew your food well
- drink water, rinse or brush after eating (if you have eaten something acidic, leave the brushing for a bit to save damaging the enamel on your teeth)
- avoid sticky high sugar foods, like toffee

You also need to ensure that your mouth is alkaline enough to prevent/inhibit the growth of yeast. Avoid highly acidic foods and drinks, such as cola.

My advice to someone suffering from lie bumps is to take the above advice on lifestyle and diet, and to look into the symptoms of systemic candida overgrowth as it is likely that the lie bumps are just one symptom of a bigger problem.

If you want to get rid of a current outbreak of lie bumps, I would recommend you try:

- applying a small amount of salt directly on to the bump and leaving it as long as possible
- avoid rubbing the bump on teeth as much as possible
- gargle a drop or two of an antifungal essential oil in warm water (oregano, tea tree, lavender, mint, cinnamon, thyme, clove...
- gargle salt water or iodine in water
- gargle some cayenne pepper (if you can handle it)
- swishing live-culture yoghurt in your mouth
- brush your teeth a minimum of two times a day, and rinse after eating any food

Try applying salt, gargling 1-2 times a day, swishing yoghurt and brushing and rinsing your mouth frequently.

White tongue is mostly caused by Candida and to get rid of that, it is recommended to take oregano oil for two to threee weeks. Take a break for two weeks and then take olive leaf extract for two week. Take a break for two weeks and so on. Do that for a period of no longer than eight weeks in total. Candigest is a powerful supplement which digests the cellulose (of which candida is largely composed) and kills the yeast. You are also suggested to take Candigest for a period of 30-60 days. White tongue will not only cause bad breath but also acne so you might want to try take those supplements to get rid of Candida but seeks your doctor first before implementing it.

Acidophilus
Posted by Jane (Philadelphia, Pa) on 05/24/2012

Yes - the acidophilus is working well for me, too.

One important caveat, however:

The key (for me, at least) is to use the "deep down" version of acidophilus, known as "pearls, " which are coated, so that they are not destroyed during the digestion process (by stomach acids, etc. ). This way, they can really do the work they need to do much deeper down in the "gut" area of your system.

Please note: There are a few different brands of probiotics that have this kind of special protective coating, not just the ones known commercially as "pearls, " though these happen to be the ones I have been using, mainly because they were the ones available at my local store (and also because they do not require refrigeration, so you can travel easily with them). I will probably keep exploring all different brand options among these coated varieties of probiotics to see which ones I ultimately like best.

Listerine
Posted by Rick (Eugene, Or) on 04/27/2012

I can't use listerine or any alcohol-based mouthwash. Makes my situation worse. It dries out my mouth and so encourages the anearobic bacteria which hide out in a pocket behind a wisdom tooth ( I now keep it clean with a rubber-tipped thingy dipped in hydrogen peroxide). I thought I was doing good but not so. Please do not recommend Listerine.

This did it for me! I have had a white tongue basically my whole life. Nothing helped. After reading this, I went to a natural foods store and bought the most probiotic-filled probiotic I could find. I checked every label and got one with the most variety of probiotics (I can post the exact label and content if someone needs). It was in the refridgerated section, and came as a powder. I'm not going to lie, it was a lot more money than I felt like spending! You can just take the powder straight, or mix with water or juice. It tastes kind of like graham crackers. After the first day, I didn't see a difference, and was a little discouraged. But after maybe 4 days, while brushing, I realized that my tongue was a beautiful, healthy red-pink! It's been like that ever since. It's so frustrating having a white tongue when you know you're healthy and hygenic. I think it's just caused by a natural imbalance of oral flora, and the probiotic stabilizes the environment. I highly recommend this solution! And thank you to the OP!

To create such a toothbrush yourself, just take a lighter and set it to the smallest flame. Light it and hold the part near the brushes about 5cm from it. It will slowly heat up, making it bendable. Gently bend it in the right curve and hold the toothbrush under water to make it solid again. I did this with my toothbrush, and finally got rid of the bacteria at the back of my tongue: brushing with baking soda and glycerine, cleaning areas previously impossible.

Toothpaste Without Chemicals
Posted by Maura (Donegal, Ireland) on 01/22/2012

There is a pink herbal gum and toothpaste you get here in Ireland and UK - which used to be, and still is, sold under one brandname [not common] - but also seems to be copied or taken over by another well-known mainstream mouth hygeine brand. Its salty and has various herbs including echinacea and myrrh and sage - it does wonders for my mouth health, along with probiotic lozenges. After getting used to this toothpaste it is revolting to use those standard frothy ones that make my mouth and tongue feel disgusting. These things definitely keep BB and white tongue in check - they don't completely cure my BB, but am going to try other things mentioned on this site.

Strangely also try rice milk as an instant neutraliser of BB - [I am lucky enough to have a saintly being who doesn't mind checking my BB before and after trying these things.]

Have you ever noticed that when you speak to someone having bad breath, you will start having the same breath. It may sound strange but I found it in so many cases to be true. Then some research I could only found that people tend to close their mouth and reduce the air intake via mouth and generates less or no saliva. Saliva has the duty of keeping your mouth and tongue clean and so less saliva will aid dead/live bacteria and food particle buildup on the rear tongue. This all happens so fast (5 to 10 mins) that the person with the halitosis can suddenly notice the bad breath when the other person speaks. This is just that I noticed in few week's time. Try out keep breathing through mouth and keep mouth, lips and tongue wet with saliva. Try and tell us if it works ...

Then I added Dr Whitakers Ear, Nose and Throat Defense which is a probiotic lozenge and my tongue coating was in check all day. It bothered me that my tongue would return to white again so I started taking a tbsp. of coconut oil a day. The coconut oil kills the fungus in your body. Since starting the coconut oil my tongue is almost ALWAYS pink. And I no longer have to brush and scrape my tongue all day. I hope you find something that works for you.

Brushed the tongue with seasalt which removed the white coating on the back on the tongue, but a grey/white patch remained in the center of the tongue with elongated white lesions in front of the patch.

The tongue was pulled forward with a wash cloth and the patch cotton swabbed with 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide over a periode of 5 days. The pain was excruciating. Layer after layer came off the tongue. The tongue looks swollen but clean now.

Strangely, I have a white coating on the walls of my mouth, especially where the teeth join. I also have a white tongue and sometimes even the roof of my mouth turns white. I also have little red dots on my tongue and sometimes my tongue looks almost hairy. I recently found out that if I go through a whole pack of Lofthouse's Fisherman's Friend Lozenges, by the end of the day the white coating is gone and all that is left is the little red dots. I just bough two more packs and am going to go through them both over the next two days to see if I can get rid of this for good. I'm also going to rinse with salt water in the hopes of getting rid of bacteria.

I figured out the cure. I had years of white tongue that reeked out bad breath within 10 or 15 min of me brushing my teeth. No kidding. Now I have a semi pink tongue with only two days of me brushing with "the cure" ...........

Chinese Medicine Diagnosis of the Tongue
Posted by David (Adealide, Australia) on 03/02/2011

From my research white or yellow or dirty tongue indicates a heavy bacterial issue. Those with this issue usually have it persitently along with bad breath. I have suffered from this all my life. I have just had a deviated septum repair. I was hoping it may relieve my symptoms. But I now have the flu which make the tongue condition worse. Many old remedies dont kill the bacteria. Normal toothpaste also. My conclusion? The sinus's and or nasal cavity in these people are slightly defective. Advances in knowledge may find the problems in the future. I know people who dont practice oral hygiene at all and never have bad breath and always have a nice healthy tongue colour. Im going to try Thera Breath toothpaste and oxyd-8 to complete my research. they show good reviews but I am always sceptical.Cheers

Glycerin

I didn't know glycerin could be used like this! The only thing I've ever used it for is making fondant for cakes and restoring the consistency of icing when it dries out.

Wilton sells it in 59ml (2 fl oz. ) bottles in craft stores or cake decorating stores too. Usually about $5 (CAN), but if you go to a Michael's Craft Store with one of their 40% off coupons, it brings it down to $3.

I've had the white tongue problem for a while too, so I'm going to give this a try.

With the orange peel are you suppose to chew it or drink it as hot tea?

Glycerin

After trying H202 and several other remedies in vain I must say that I am extremely pleased with Glycerin for my coated tongue. I just bought some at my local drug store (not vegetable glycerin either), and upon first brush I could see it cleaning it up better than anything else did, and almost immediately! Granted I am only 10 minutes into this particular experiment but I am certainly optimistic! Thank you Earth Clinic.

Do you drink the providone iodine or just gargle it?

I suffered from tonsil stones for years and then decided to get the tonsils out. I feel that it was the best decision I have ever made. I do suffer from white tounge coating from time to time, but I think it has more to do with yeast overgrowth than anything else. I say it depends on the person. I am thankful to be rid of those nasty and annoying tonsil stones.

I had just read about medacation contributing to the "white coating" and was wondering if a. D. D. Medication, or reactive airways medication is contributing to my white tounge btw ive never smoked chewed or drank my stomach also hurts often I own 1 cat also I brush twice a day... So wut am I doing to cause the white coating? one more thing if I may add a question... Have you ever used chewing tobacco? no but it can lead to many tounge problems

Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda
Posted by Canuckboy (Calgary, Alberta) on 09/08/2010

My recipe for a nice pink tongue is as follows:

* Apple Cider Vinegar: Drink 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of ACV in a glass of water, preferably 3 times a day. *Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS): 3 drops of MMS plus 15 drops of ACV wait 3 mins add a bit of water and gargle, squish around for 30 to 60 secs and spit out. * Iodine: use Kelp in cooking as a spice - makes my mouth moist and clean. Or, drink a drop of Lugol's solution in a glass of water. * Tongue scraper

Hello Kevin, You stated that "Yellow means heat is inside "but didn't say how to treat this. I've only recently come up with a yellowish tongue and would like to get rid of it... any ideas?

It might be something in your diet causing the issue. I get a white tongue when I drink milk or soy milk and a brown tongue when I eat honey! Goat milk and rice milk is okay for me, no white tongue. Experiment by removing one food after another to find out what the culprit is. It could also be a sign of candida overgrowth.Good luck to you!

I had a white coated tongue for most of my life (52 years old). Yesterday I decided to follow some advice I read here and bought natural tooth paste with salt. It is more expensive than normal tooth pastes but well, it did the trick right away. My tongue was clean from the first time I brushed my teeth with it and it is still clean today. I think that all that stuff in tooth pastes is not good for you.

Hi,

I had the same problem with my tongue several months ago. I found out that I was taking too much cod liver oil, it had too much vit A and D in it. I quit taking the cod liver oil and started taking the flaxseed oil and I started brushing my tongue with tooth paste and peroxide,.... my tongue turned pink again. Hope this helps

im 42, ive had a white tongue for about 6 months, it also is now going brown, like ive been smoking (i dont smoke , use drugs and would be lucky to drink one beer a month), dont have massive sugar or anything overload in my diet

tongue tastes horrid and feels like ive burnt it, rear teeth coated, tried everything:
oral medicine from doctor (mild response but made stomach sore)
water drinking increase
mouthwash
now trying rock salt, which cleans it better, but it still keeps coming back

its driving me insane, waking to it every morn (i brush tongue with salt and gargle) then by afternoon its back.
