The Castor Oil application has not worked very well for me....still itching and pain with heat. I am looking for a cure but have not found any real help yet. I refuse to see a Dr or Ob/Gyn for assistance as I know what they will give me. I am looking for natural assistance. I am thinking about trying Hemp flower oil. I would make my own naturally.

Low Oxalates Diet

I have had lichen sclerosis for years, it got so bad I went to a Specialist at a Nuffield hospital, finally I found out the name of it. I'm 79 and 3/4!

I tried the "Emuaid" cream, it came from America and was nearly 68 dollars!!! I found out later that it's on "E-bay" much cheaper, it only lasted me a week but it was so good! So soothing, but I can't afford it!

I'm going to try the "Gluten free and Low Oxalates diet, I have done a lot of research on line, my ls is particularly bad at the moment. Wish me luck!! Margaret.

Another possible cause of LS...

I have had LS for 20 years and while it mostly stayed calm, lately the itch around my genital area is off the chart so I am delighted to find lots of options on your site to try out. I had a suspicion, which others have validated, that years of wearing sanitary towels is a possible contributor, especially if during the 70's, 80's etc.

Jodi, I think you've got something there. I've had LS for almost 30 years. It started in 1987. I was having sex with my ex-husband 5 years after we were divorced. I think mentally I was trying to stop and that was my defense mechanism. Thank goodness he met someone and stopped needing me. You mentioned Aloe Vera but didn't say if it helped. Please let me know.

For intense itching I use desitin maximum strength, wear white cotton panties with unscented panty liners, and drink organic apple cider vinegar all natural drink, ( found at health food stores and festival food store) 8 ounces 3 times a week. Also when I followed a gluten free diet and no artificial sweeteners my LS was gone. Now I restarted the gluten free diet and no aspartame.

Dear Nan,

When I use Lemongrass essential oil on the skin, I dilute it a lot. It is very strong and can burn the skin. Lavender is more gentle.

I would try a mixture of the following:

  • 1 tablespoon castor oil
  • 1 DROP lemongrass essential oil
  • 3 drops lavender essential oil

I hope it is helpful to you! Our family has certainly found the above oils to help with different ailments.

Baking Soda
Posted by Frances (Carbalah, Qld.) on 09/23/2016

Yes, in Austalia, probably same in Scotland, Baking soda is the same as bicarbonate of soda. I use bicarb. of soda in a spray bottle of distilled water after urinating. Easier than using heaps in a bath. It does ease the itch but doesn't stop the condition, which is an autoimmune disease according to naturopath. GP's just recommend the high-strength steroid ointment.

A major contributor to any autoimmune issue is gut dysbiosis... an imbalance of bad bacteria/yeast (too many) to the beneficial bacteria. Since yeast (candida) is part of the "imbalance", ridding your body of yeast is a great step in mitigating/reversing LS. I take Oregano essential oil internally (3-5 drops in a capsule), 2-5 times/day. Oregano oil is the number one "fungus killer".... got rid of the fungal infection on my husband's feet (thick yellow toe nails are an indication of a fungal infection) when used topically.

Oregano oil is a "hot" oil... it should be diluted 10:1 with a high quality vegetable oil when starting topical use.... see how you tolerate it...everyone is different. If you experience red, itching skin, dilute more or discontinue use if very bad.

I would NEVER put Oregano oil (even diluted) near my vaginal area... it hurts to even think about that... which is why I take it internally.

Again, 100% pure essential oils are mandatory for internal use.

I have never used the creams or vagisil and I have lichens sclerosis. I do eat primarily organic foods sourced from local farmers markets along with ranch raised eggs dairy and meat.

I find recent stress has aggravated my lichens, that had been in remission. I will go back to the obgyn for evaluation today.

I will seek more prp treatments and one of the topical treatments on this site. I can't tolerate the steroids. The platelette rich plasma treatment has kept the symptoms at bay for over a year. I will keep my hope and faith that it will push it back into remission. I am afraid I will have to change my work out routine as well. It's a life style thing, I'm afraid.

I am 55 and have had L.S. for one year. I am a naturopath so I eat super healthy and have a very healthy lifestyle. Cortisone creams helped a little, but it still never went away completely. I tried Lisepten by Clover leaf farm, which didn't work. I tried Emuaid, which soothed the itching but didn't heal. I have been following the extremely strict Candida diet for 5 + months, no sugar, no alcohol, no yeast, taking supplements to kill any yeast as well as a probiotic, with no results!

And now finally yesterday I tried this castor oil and lemon grass essential oil and lavender essential oil and so far so good. One small white patch that has been chronic is just about gone.

I am hopeful, I will keep you posted.

EC: Essential oils should always be diluted when used topically. Lemongrass can burn delicate tissue if it is not diluted sufficiently.

Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Therapy

After 5 years of suffering with Lichens Sclerosis, I must share what has given me relief and remission. My husband researched treatments and found an OB/ GYN in a neighboring county, who provides Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Therapy. This is an experimental treatment, and I am the 3rd patient she has treated with "PRP" for Lichens.

The 3 treatments with an out of pocket expense of $800 each have completely cleared all of my itching, Burning and white patches. Upon my follow up exam, my doctor stated she could not tell I had lichens! I do not have a reversal in vaginal tissue elasticity, but I believe my peri menopause contributes to that condition. My 3 outpatient treatments were completed in less than 2 hours each, and were non invasive. The process begins with your own blood draw that is put in a centrifuge for about 15 minutes. The platelet the rich plasma is drawn into a syringe and injected in the affected areas (with a large needle to protect the platelets) OUCH!, but the local helps a lot.

This 3 round treatment over 6 months completely cleared my lichens. No creams, steroids or prayers could do that. I was told to come back every 6 months, and that I may require more treatments. After a year I am still clear. This doctor was the first of 3 gynecologists to actually do a biopsy to confirm lichens sclerosis, I am forever grateful to her for taking the bold steps to help me.

FYI PRP is also known as the O shot and the Vampire Facelift, and is thought to restore healthy tissue and blood flow. Read up on it to see if this is an option for you. I know I would pay almost anything to rid myself of the agony of Lichens Sclerosis.

My (vaginal) LS completely went away for over 15 yrs. Clobetasol, then Aubrey's organic aloe gel (the ONLY one that won't burn, even compared to drinkable stuff), coconut oil, etc. So, I'm reading about LS all over again and the one thing I never see is any awareness about one's mental/psychological state.

My mentor acupuncturist's first comment 15 yrs ago was "this sounds like a boundary issue to me..." Why is the skin tightening, atrophying?? I was in a yucky relationship... keep him out, down there!!

I am currently dealing with boundary issues in my life and hello LS.....I am offering that, for some, straightening out there life and head may be part of the cure. I definitely believe we can cure ourselves of this. I say something you perceive as embarrassing and your skin turns RED!! The mind affecting the body....As part of your healing you may want to be kind to yourself and shift what you can in a positive direction.

I am working on a cream with Chinese herbs for a natural vaginal alternative.

Aine, If a person has an autoimmune illness, this would overstimulate the system to attack the body even more.

“Hyperimmune egg is an egg from a hen that has been vaccinated against certain infectious diseases. The hen develops specific antibodies that rev up the immune system to fight the specific diseases included in the vaccination. These antibodies pass into the hen's eggs. People harvest the eggs and remove the antibodies. These antibodies are then used to treat diseases in people.”

“How does it work? – Antibodies contained in hyperimmune egg are thought to stimulate the immune system and help the body fight disease.” – www.webmd.com

Dietary Changes, Essential Oils
Posted by Cindy (Newberry Fl) on 03/13/2016

I started with Lichen Sclerosis at 56 years old in 2014 with a spot on my breast and white patches starting on the underneath side. This diagnose came shortly after I fell and ended up with a par fracture and bulging disks in my back. I used whatever cream they had giving me along with eating 80/20 alkaline. I completely healed that area and it hasn't come back to this day and it's 2016.

Over the holidays I splurged eating too much of the good stuff and started with it in the vulva area. At first I thought I just scratched myself while wiping. I started getting worse in the next three weeks. Sleepless nights and the scratching and rubbing was getting out of control. I finally called the gyno. I couldn't get in until Monday so that meant go the whole weekend. I faithfully took me essential oils and immediately got off everything that had sugar in it. I was in and out of the tub with a few inches of water and baking soda at least 25 times or more to get relief.

I had called the doctor on call that Saturday morning she told me to use desitin. It helped a little along with the bath. I also took some Benedryl. I finally got a mirror out and looked down there. I knew right away the Lichen Sclerosis had got me. Saw the gyno next day. She wrote the script for a steroid. When I went to pick it up they wanted 250.00 I just about started crying. I have been out of work for almost two years from that fall.

Little did I know at the time this was in my favor. When I looked up the Lichen Sclerosis I read terrible things about what the steroid cream does to you. There was no way I would use that down there. That stuff shouldn't be allowed. What the doctors should do is hook up with a homeopathic doctor and get educated. I couldn't get it so I went home looked up lichen sclerosis vs alkaline and lichen sclerosis vs essential oils. I get them from a reputable company. Find yourself a health coach that knows how to use them.

I stopped all the sugar, flours, fruits and vegetables high in sugar. (No carrot-sweet potato-potato-rice etc.). When I cheat (like have a few organic gmo free chips) I know it because my lichen sclerosis acts up again. I also used a product called emu oil-then switch to emuaid. They helped a lot. I'm running out of emuaid so someone told me her oncologist told her to tell me to use bag balm.

I am using that now. I also got a squirt bottle and rinse every time I pee with water high in PH/alkaline water. Tap water makes it sting. I no longer have any splitting and cracking and my color is back. I barely have any scarring left. You must take care of leaky gut to get this to clear.

Oh by the way I've already been able to have sex again. I am on the road to recovery and feeling better than I have in many years and I've lost some weight and inches too. I also found stress can also add to this problem. From my experience so far I'm finding for me that changing my eating habits is the way to heal and get past this lichen sclerosis.

I can't begin to thank you enough!!! I've had LS for 11 years and I can deal with the pain and bleeding and all that but the itching!!!!!!! The kind where you want to take a knife and cut it out or the relief from scratching is better than sex. Anyway, I was having one of those episodes last night... It is always at night... And so came searching once again and found this. I use essential oils and have a bottle of lavender mixed with cedarwood, mineral water and witch hazel that I use on my pillows and thought maybe this would work. I added a few more drops of lavender and many drops of frankincense and all I can say is I was in heaven from the instant relief! I usually have itching in the morning also right after my shower and I used the spray again and what joy! THANK YOU THANK THANK YOU

Emily, Do you mean you have cured your Lichen Sclerosis by eating a raw food diet? How many weeks of eating the raw vegetables, including the greens, and berries as fruit did it take?

Are you still cured? Do you no longer have 'itch" or 'white patches" in the pubic area?

I bought a book called " LICHEN SCLEROSIS -HEALING THE DISEASE" by Ginny Chandoha...Helping the Body Heal Naturally" ISBN9781836711345, , , how she cured her lichen sclerosis..

Among other things, she used organic, unrefined, coconut oil on her itch and stopped the itch at that moment...etc She eats organically.. Also heard that Dermatologist Doctor prescribed steroid cream DESONOIDE CREAM 0,05% that took itch away..to be used sparingly.

Has anyone read this book or tried this cream? And cured themselves? I just got this book this week. Great ideas in it that helped me a lot.

Wendy, your post is so interesting to me. I have had skin issues since I was a teenage (40 years). My skin would itch and burn and small sores would erupt that were like a burn and sometimes would grow to and inch big. I have scarring all over my upper arms, upper back and legs. As a teenager, I was diagnosed with psoriasis. After many years of dermatologists and naturopaths, everyone was perplexed because nothing helped.

I developed LS a year ago and through research was led to Trying Low Oxalates. I went on a low oxalate diet and this has helped tremendously! Many vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, etc are not my friends.

Like you, the less food I eat, the better I feel! I only have LS breakouts, itchy, burning skin when I eat higher oxalate foods.

Thanks for sharing. I rarely run across anyone who has experienced the whole skin thing.

LS and Hypothyroidism Connection
Posted by Kat (Florida) on 02/13/2016

I have LS and hypo/hyperthyroidism depending on thyroid med dosage :) It fluctuates all the time. I currently started using Ashwagandah for thyroid and adjust it according to hypo/hyperthyroid symptoms (Now using three a week - Mon, Wed, Fri). Seems to be a good fit for me. Haven't had a blood test since starting it almost a year ago; but according to the symptoms it is working well. It is good for many other medical issues too.

Didn't know LS and thyroid were linked. This is interesting. I use various combos of essential oils in emu oil topically for the LS ... the itching of LS is less with ashwagandah, but the rash and patches are still there.

I first had LS 10 years ago at the beginning of menopause. Someone once mentioned, what is the relation between a child getting this and an adult. All I could think of was I worked in the dirt and garden, which is the same as a kid playing in the dirt also. So I read about Perrins creme, tried that for a while, but found out about two capsules to try from talking to Perrins. For 5 years I have been taking Life Extension Super Bio-Curcumin and Red Clover capsule once a day. The skin acted better where the ripping open was almost gone and the itch had practically stopped. But a couple months ago I was still itching overnight, so I read your wonderful posts to figure out what can I add to this. ( Also a year ago I added Ultimate Flora probiotic and I regularly take 6 drops of colloidal silver 500ppm in 2 oz. of water once daily.) So I added a soft gel cap of Essiac Tonic twice a day on an empty stomach. I also have added ozonated olive oil creme once a day applied after my shower. Since Christmas I have NOT itched AT ALL!! That nighttime itch was awful! A month and a half of being itch free I wanted to tell everyone. Now, I am still working on un-fusing the sensitive skin. I will write updates if any changes take place. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck everybody, we will figure this out before any doctor does.

LS is an autoimmune issue and not a fungal or yeast issue despite the name (lichen. It just has that appearance when looked at under a scope).

Itched for months and finally was diagnosed with LS. I used steroid cream to get the itch, sores and bruising down. Now I'm just using zinc oxide diaper cream every few days and have not had to use the steroid cream again. I'm also squatting far forward to urinate straight down without it touching my genitals, as a precaution.

I am going to start using legal CBD oil as I read LS could be autoimmune and CBD is being used in autoimmune issues. Also, after reading here, I'm going to start gluten-free too.

I'm doing well with just the zinc oxide for now, but I really don't want this to get worse as I've already had some fusion and scarring and I'm pre-menaposal (45 years old). I'm with a wonderful supportive guy, so anything I can try, I'm going to give it a whirl! Will check in on CBD and gluten-free process as I experiment.

I began having 'cranky crotch' about 4 years ago. I went to about 6 doctors to find out what 'the dry patch' was outside my vag was as well as 'the hot spot' back near by butt was. I also had splitting skin near the bends of my legs, as well as something that looked like diaper rash. All of these issues were not concurrent but pretty much ongoing and varied. I see from reading about LS that break outs can be very different from one person to another. I also feel my vagina is smaller in the sense that some positions cause discomfort. I am 60 and highly sexual so LS is a bit of a problem to say the least. I finally got sent to a 7th doctor (gyno specialist) and had biopsies done. LS!

I find that something will work for a week or two and then my body does not use it as well as it had earlier. That might be just 'me' specific, I am not sure.

But so far I have found using Emu oil is the best oil thus far. I got mine at Vitamin Shoppe for about $20 for 4 oz. I do put coconut oil in me internally, esp as lube.

Itching is an issue esp on my mound area. Today I tried Oblas oil gently dabbed on and wiped off took care of that... TODAY.

I have also used some organic non hexene Castor oil topically and that has helped too, but so far the Emu seems to seep into my skin the best of all.

I take Red Clover pills- 3 in the am and 3 in the pm. That has seemed to help the area calm down A LOT. I have also ordered Red Clover ointment. Pricey at about $22 for a few ounces. I haven't received it yet, but I am thinking if the Red Clover is helpful internally it will be soothing externally too.

Here is a good yahoo blog to check out. A lot of the folks use traditional doctor stuff but there are also a lot of alternative applications.

It is a good community with much helpful information.

I hope this helps a few folks out. Best wishes!!

LS and Hypothyroidism Connection

What group are you on where they talk about using cannabis oil? I'm in Vancouver, Canada and that sort of thing is pretty available, with prescription of course. It's something I'd like to look into so if I can connect with those talking about it, it would be ideal. Thank you.

Multiple Remedies

Have you tried coffee enemas? They help with autoimmune diseases and LS is autoimmune. Coffe enemas are also pain relieving and anti-inflammatory. I've been doing one or more a day for two weeks and am experiencing positive results, the condition is slowly improving. I also feel that there is a connection with the disease and the gut, hours before I have a bowel movement, the itching increases. I think that if I improve my digestive health and rebuild my gut flora, this may also heal the skin.

I READ YOUR INFO AND WENT ON A GLUTEN AND LOW OXALATE DIET. I was told I had Lichen S.Thank you to everyone that shared their advice about going on a low Oxalate diet and gluten free. It works, I no longer suffer with this condition.

I did use a steroid cream for several weeks. But I am all clear, skin is normal color now, my gp advice is to continue doing what I am doing.

Frankincense Oil
Posted by Mama To Many (Tennessee) on 10/20/2015

Dear Lisa,

Frankincense Essential Oil should be used externally.

I have used one or two drops neat (without diluting) unless the area to treat is a sensitive one, in which case, I would mix it one drop with a bit of castor oil or coconut oil and apply to the area one to three times a day.

LS and Hypothyroidism Connection

I had hyperparathyroidism, had parathyroid removed, which fixed that, but have lichens acutely. Used clobatasol and premarin cream for years and cannot get rid of it. It even hurts to urinate.

Thank you, I used the castor oil, lemongrass, & lavender, I added about 4 drops of Frankincense.

My niece has LS, after about 4 or 5 day putting it on liberally throughout the day, she called today and said everything is back to normal, her skin is back to normal, no more itching, bleeding and pain, hopefully it last, she is only 19, I hope this helps. Thanks again for your post giving me the original recipe.

Until you have figured out the cause maybe you could use a homeopathic cream such as Hypericum and Urtica. This is extremely mild and soothing and can be used for burns and stings etc, if it doesn't help, it certainly won't hurt.

I have had LS for 4 years. The clobetasol worked for the itch but I still and very sensitive there and cannot have relations with my husband I'm afraid the skin is too thin and It may tear. This is a problem! I recently got a book the autoimmune solution by Dr. Amy Meyers and yes a change in diet which she goes over in detail. I started 16 days ago and have been caffeine, sugar, wheat, dairy, and gluten free ever since and I am losing weight, and strengthening my gut. I have hypothyroid and want OFF of the medicine which in 30 days she can have you well on your way The recipes are easy clean and so nourishing that I am NEVER hungry I recommend the auto immune paleo cookbook. Made several recipes and I LOVE it

Ozonated Olive Oil

Ozonated olive oil has reversed my LS symptoms. I applied it to the labia area and it unfused the labia. I have applied a small amount 3 times daily for three weeks now.

I bought a small jar from a British Columbia company and when you receive it, keep it stored in the fridge. It's okay to ship via unrefrigerated mail though. It looks like solid vaseline. Reasonably priced.

There are many topical uses for this product, from acne to cuts and bruises.

Definitely. My sister read anything she could find on LS and our mother had thyroid problems, thyroid removal and in later life developed chronic crohns disease. Poor immune system.

Sitz Baths

I have recently been diagnosed with lichen sclerosis. I have had severe itching and after trying many things which seem to relieve it for about a week and then it is like it develops some immunity to it, I tried vagisil. This has given me the most relief as a cream. But what has actually been helping to heal it and give much longer relief is sitz baths. I use some epsom salt, lavender, chamomile, comfrey, yarrow, and marigold, steep this in a sitz bag for a bit and add it to a very shallow warm bath. Then I add baking soda to the water and soak for 20-30 minutes. Doing this twice a day is best. This is still very new to me and I'm horrified to find out it is chronic and the damage it causes. I haven't tried the steroid cream yet but after reading the many replies, I'm very concerned about using it at all.

Lichen planus or Lichen Sclerosus:

Aloe vera 99.9% plus coconut oil (not together) brings great relief

Stress makes me itch, otherwise there's only redness on: two white blister looking circles touching each other, taking vitamin B complex, turmeric, vitamin D, vitamin C and E

Gluten free pasta bread.
