Natural Remedies for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Herbs

Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) is a discouraging problem that affects many women. In addition to the inconvenience it causes, month after month of heavy periods can cause anemia. However, natural remedies like apple cider vinegar, blackstrap molasses and dietary changes can often reduce the heavy menstrual flow and improve overall health.

Natural Remedies for Heavy Periods

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper powder helps to stop bleeding. Interestingly, it can also increase circulation. This seeming contradiction is explained by the fact that cayenne pepper restores balance. For acute bleeding, 3/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper can be added to a glass of grape juice. Consuming the juice and cayenne pepper with a straw will keep from getting cayenne pepper on the lips, which can burn. Cayenne pepper capsules can be taken. These are often combined with ginger to reduce the “shock effect” to the stomach when the capsule dissolves and releases cayenne pepper to an unexpected fire.

Shepherd’s Purse

The herb shepherd’s purse can be used to reduce bleeding. Tinctures work the fastest. When the bleeding is heavy, take 1 dropperful (1/4 teaspoon) shepherd’s purse in 1 tablespoon of water. Repeat the dose after 30 minutes if needed. Then take another dose every few hours until the bleeding has slowed down. For even faster results, hold 1 dropperful in the mouth without diluting it in water. It will immediately begin absorbing into the bloodstream and doing its work.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium essential oil helps to reduce bleeding. It is used topically. Massage 2-4 drops of geranium essential oil onto the lower abdomen several times a day to reduce bleeding. For sensitive skin or to make it easier to apply, use a pea sized amount of coconut oil with the geranium essential oil.

Warm Baths

For acute heavy bleeding, warm baths will sometimes bring relief.

Blackstrap Molasses

Full of a variety of nutrients, blackstrap molasses can often restore balance to health with regular use. Blackstrap molasses is also high in iron, which is helpful to women who are regularly losing significant amounts of blood through menstruation.

A tablespoon daily is a typical “dose” of blackstrap molasses. It can be added to coffee, oatmeal, tea or taken right off the spoon! Iron absorption will be maximized if it is taken with vitamin C or a vitamin C rich food, like orange juice.

Dairy products consumed at the same time as blackstrap molasses may reduce the amount of iron absorbed by the body. This is something to consider if blackstrap is taken in milk or in coffee with cream.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is another popular home remedy for heavy menstrual bleeding and many other health issues due to its overall alkalizing effect on the body and the nutrients that are concentrated in the vinegar. 1-3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar can be added to a tall glass of water and sipped throughout the day for full benefit. Apple cider vinegar can be taken with or away from meals. Taken before meals it can help with weight loss. Taken with or after meals it improves digestion.

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Red raspberry leaf tea is famous for its benefit to women’s health. Red raspberry leaf is ideally taken in a tea. The beneficial nutrients in red raspberry leaf are best extracted in hot water. Tinctures and capsules are less beneficial. 3-4 cups of red raspberry leaf tea can be consumed on a daily basis to improve overall reproductive health. It not only can help to normalize periods, but tones the uterus, help with PMS and reduces cramps. Red raspberry leaf tea is a pleasant tea to consume, not dissimilar in taste to black tea.

Vitex (Chasteberry)

Vitex is another herb that is useful to women’s health difficulties, including heavy periods and adenomyosis.  Vitex is usually taken in capsule or tincture form. The dried berries can be used however, also. Simply chew on ¼ teaspoon of vitex berries over the course of each day.

Iodine

Iodine is essential to health. It is needed by the ovaries and thyroid, to name just two of many. Inadequate iodine levels can help to regular menstrual cycles and reduce reproductive problems like heavy bleeding. Iodine is also helpful in reducing ovarian cysts and fibroids. Iodine is best utilized by the body if “companion nutrients” are taken as well. These companion nutrients include selenium, zinc, vitamin C, magnesium and B vitamins.

Dietary Changes

Over time dietary changes can improve the menstrual cycle. Start with increasing whole foods and decreasing processed foods and sugar. If animal products make up a large part of the diet (meats and dairy products) consider reducing portions of animal products and trying to up the number of vegetarian meals each week. Animal products, even organic ones, contain hormones that compete with hormones in women’s bodies.

Castor Oil Packs

Castor oil packs used during the month can reduce some of the causes of heavy bleeding. Castor oil packs can reduce fibroids and ovarian cysts. Castor oil packs should NOT, however, be used during menstruation. It increases blood flow and could make the blood flow heavier.

Rest

Heavy menstrual bleeding can take a toll on the body. During days of heavy bleeding it is important to get enough rest and even take a day or two off. Be sure to include plenty of nourishing foods on those days to help restore what the body is losing.

What is Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

Heavy menstrual bleeding, otherwise known as menorrhagia, is a condition in which a woman experiences abnormally heavy or prolonged bleeding. While menstrual bleeding is common, menorrhagia is characterized by such heavy blood loss and cramping that an individual is unable to maintain normal daily activities.

While menstrual bleeding varies for most women, heavy menstrual bleeding can be characterized by specific symptoms. Soaking through one or more sanitary pads or tampons in an hour, needing to use twice the recommended amount of sanitary protection and needing to change sanitary protection during the night typically constitute abnormally heavy flow. Additional symptoms include bleeding for a week or longer, passing large blood clots, not completing daily activities and experiencing symptoms of anemia. Those who suffer with menorrhagia may find travel and recreation difficult or impossible during menstrual periods.

Causes of Heavy Periods

  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Adenomyosis
  • Uterine polyps
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Stress
  • Infection
  • Cancer
  • Blood thinning medication
  • Certain types of birth control, like an IUD

Using natural remedies for heavy periods can reduce the bleeding and even help to heal the cause of heavy bleeding and make this condition a thing of the past.

I had the same issue as many of the women with sudden heavy flooding, clots and a period that's won't seem to stop. No period at all in March(first time that ever happened ) April spotted, May had a period for a month. The heavy flooding and clotting started which scared me. I'm 47 and feel this is perimenopause. 1 T. ACV and teaspoon of (bsm) black strap molasses 3x day worked so fast and the clots and flooding stopped. I'm still spotting but can handle that.

This other site I was on said that I would have to keep doing this indefinitely in order to regulate my estrogen, hormones and thin the lining of the uterus. I'm afraid If I would stop doing this will it go back to heavy flooding and clots. Has anyone ever used Apple cider vinegar and BSM to help with this problem and then stopped? Have any of the people that have used these two remedies for any length of time, have you had any problems?

Love to hear from the people who posted in here years ago as to their outcomes. I would be grateful to hear your story. Thank you.

I am going through the same thing. I am 49 and blood clots, bigger than a quarter and heavy bleeding at times. I do take coconut oil, cayenne pepper, and apple cider vinegar...but, not enough every day...but I will start today. I do find when I take a lot of those products it helps, but am I bad with being consistent...

I was so worried about losing too much blood, but feel better knowing others have experienced this.

I am 49 and have always had heavy bleeding and quarter sized blood clots. This period I am experiencing very large blood clots and heavy bleeding for almost 3 weeks now. I feel like it won't ever stop! I do take ACV and cayenne, but not every day. I am going to start though, because when I take a lot I see results....I am not good with remembering to take this stuff consistently. I was worried, but after reading this post and others, I am not alone. Thanks!!

Shepherds purse herbal tincture is a tried and true remedy for heavy menstrual bleeding. It's also taken by women who are hemorrhaging after giving birth to slow the bleeding and prevent a fatal situation. I just ordered some from Amazon (brand Herb Pharm) to have on hand for when I gave birth. I read some of the reviews mentioning how well it worked to slow down or stop heavy menstrual bleeding. Shepherds purse has a very good safety profile, so it wouldn't hurt to try it! Blackstrap molasses and ACV are great too. Especially the mineral-rich molasses to help you restore mineral levels.

I had my period 2 weeks ago and instead of stopping after its usually 3-4 days, I have been light bleeding/spotting for 2 weeks. I am 48 years old, so I understand it is part of the change, but I would like it to stop already, usually natural remedies. I read on this website that blackstrap molasses and apple cider vinegar should do the trick. I have been taking 2 tsp Blackstrap Molasses and 1 tbl Apple Cider Vinegar since Thursday, but they didn't work. Sunday I took 2 tbl acv, three times, and 1 tsp Blackstrap Molasses - I thought that worked but this morning noticed alittle spotting. I admit I am kind of disappointed because these tonics seem to work almost immediately for many women on this website. Do the tonics take longer to work for some then others? Am I taking the wrong amounts of Blackstrap Molasses and/or acv? Should I just take one of them or continue with the amount I took on Sunday? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yesterday I bought Red Raspberry Leaf Tea, as I am concerned about the ACV and the enamel on my teeth. I will try taking 1 tbl of BSM twice a day and the Tea. Should I also keep taking 2 tbl of ACV, 3 times a day? I read ACV can actually bring on your period, is that wrong?

Which would be better to take to help stop a long period, ACV with the mother or ACV capsules? I know that "the mother" is the best part of ACV, but when it comes to wanting to stop your period/heavy flow, does it matter?

Sookiec, I had a similar experience except mine remained so heavy for well over two weeks I couldn't leave the house. I, too, was searching for help and discovered this remedy. It didn't help continuously right away, but out of desperation I persisted. I think it takes various amounts of time depending on the iron and mineral deficiency of the individual. I had to take continually every day twice a day for about two weeks. It made the excessive flow lighter then made it stop completely. It's been over a year since I had a cycle. This week it started again and it's excessive again. Went right away to get some molasses...came in here to verify I remembered the recipe correctly. Felt compelled to respond to your post. Hope it helps to encourage you or others not to give up too quickly. Best wishes. =)

Hi everyone,

My history: I've always had heavy periods, I've had check ups and seen specialist and they can't seem to find out why this is happening to me, my periods come every month but sometimes a few days late and they last 8 days. I only feel pain for the first 2 or 3 days but that goes away with Pain killers.

At the age of 16, I decided to stop my periods with the pill. I had 4 years of no periods and it was the perfect life. Then I decided to give my body a break and stop the pill. My hormones went crazy and I got hair all over my body including my face.... horrible.

I tried some natural remedies for a year but I always felt the natural remedies made it worse. I tried Apple Cider Vinegar for a couple months then I tried Blackstrap Molasses for a couple months and then I tried them together for a couple months and still no help.

So I went back onto the pill but a better one with less side effects. I am now getting break through bleeding and acne on my chin. I feel like the pill is making my health worse but I don't know what else to do.

I'm currently doing 1 hour of exercise a day. Stopped drinking soft drinks and am drinking water but not enough because I don't like it or feel thirsty. I'm trying to clean up my diet but it's harder then it looks, also I cannot afford healthy/organic food. I take cod liver oil and turmeric.

I'm thinking of stopping the pill but I need some help with bloating because when I get my period I look like I'm 4 month pregnant NO JOKE!!!

What can I do for bloating and the disgusting feeling I get while on my period?

How do I stop getting stressed and anxious while on my period? because it gets so bad that I don't leave the house in fear of spilling. How can I make my periods lighter? And how can I prevent my hormones from going crazy before/while I stop the pill?

Please help me, this pain has gone on long enough. I'm not working because of it and I really want to get out into the world and make something of myself. Please help me, Please.

Dear Nicole,

I am sorry for your trials with your cycles! Red Raspberry Leaf tea is something you can try. It would take daily use over some time (I would give it at least three months before deciding it does not work.) A one pound bag of the loose tea would last a long time.

Put 3 Tablespoons in a quart mason jar. Pour boiling water over the leaves. Steep for 15 minutes. Strain. Drink throughout the day. You can add some peppermint if you like.

If you have a heavy cycle, you could try cayenne pepper (1/2 teaspoon in some juice, drink with a straw). I have taken this and then repeated the dose in an hour and found it to be very helpful.

Liquid Chlorophyll, a Tablespoon every hour during heavy bleeding is also helpful.

Taking kelp daily may be helpful, too.

I have used all of the above remedies for various female issues with success.

You are already making positive steps for your health; good job.

For the bloating, the tea may help, and plenty of water, and light meals.

There are many stories on the Earth Clinic page about cycle problems. When you have time, read through them. Something may resonate with you and give you some more clues to what would help you the most.

Hi Nicole,

Stopping soda is for sure a good start. I have my moon now and had a raw soup all day and that yucky feeling is considerably less. I crave meat and carbs but raw is best imho. I also have been taking Vitex (chasteberry powder in coffee with unsulphured BSM) and believe it is helping. I read somewhere to only take it in the 1st half of the month, but read again somewhere to take it daily

(http://www.saraholeary.net/from-pms-menopause-vitex-may-be-your-next-best-friend/), which I started recently and see my flow stanch a bit. Another friend suggested staying hydrated (water def. not soda), Go with the Flow! Hope this helps.

Try dandelion tea. Just one cup in the evening (soak 2 bags 15 mins) every night made a difference for me and I've always had heavy periods.

Dear Mommy,

You can start with one or two of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a tall glass of water once or twice a day. Move up to a tablespoon in a tall glass of water twice a day if it suits you. With the Blackstrap, start with a Tablespoon a day. You can move up to two per day if you like. In an acute bleeding situation, you can take it more often. In acute bleeding situations, I have found liquid chlorophyll to work very well. I would take a Tablespoon every hour or two if needed. After a birth with heavy bleeding, some midwives suggest getting a whole 16 ounce bottle of chlorophyll down in a couple of days.

Hope you find great relief in these remedies!

Blackstrap molasses is a great tonic for building up iron which is being depleted by heavy periods, but it still has a high sugar content and causes weight gain taken regularly.

I found apple cider vinegar more helpful in regulating heavy menstrual bleeding as opposed to trying to replace lost iron. It worked miracles within a day by reducing the amount of bleeding and killed my hunger along with it. Having given it some thought I decided long term use of ACV isn't the goal, natural living is .. so decided to eat apples instead, seen as Apple Cider Vinegar is made from apples. And they work just as well. So I eat at least 2 apples a day and drink at least a litre of water throughout the day and it seems to have worked. No more heavy menstrual bleeding. It even cut my bleeding time down from 10 days to 4.

I had been bleeding moderately since Christmas (approximately 15 days) with a foul smell, which I never have during my period. I went to my gynecologist last Wednesday for an exam. Results pending (vaginal swab to test for infection). In the meantime, I found this site. I immediately drove to the supermarket for blackstrap molasses. I already had ACV on hand. When I got home, I immediately took 3 TBS ACV in a cup of water. 20 minutes later I took 3 TBS of the molasses in a cup of warm coconut milk ( added cinnamon, cayenne and turmeric to taste) then went to bed. The next morning, my flow was reduced considerably. Prior to this, the toilet water would be completely red like jello. I could now see just a small amount of blood wafting through the water. I have repeated the AVC/water and BSM/coconut milk drink every 8 hours. I am gratefully reporting that my flooding has been reduced to some light red spotting on tissue paper after urination. So, basically, after about 36 hours the bleeding has slowed SIGNIFICANTLY! I cannot express how thankful I am to have found this site. I have been devouring its content. I now realize the importance of keeping caffeine and sugar out of my diet as much as possible, keeping my liver toned and being aware of how I may be thawing my hormones out of balance. So, much of what ails us is directly related to what we consume and what we DON'T. I will be including ACV, BSM and coconut oil to my daily supplements. Good luck to every one searching for remedies. May you find your solutions! Have a wonderful new year, new you!

The bleeding has completely stopped. Now I can look forward to going away with my boyfriend this weekend and not having to worry about the inconvenience of such a heavy period. Though the bleeding has stopped, I will continue to take the TBS of ACV daily. I will stop the BSM today. I don't want the high glucose content to build up. However, I am going to work on my immunity with probiotics and fermented foods. I will post again next month to report on my next cycle. Best wishes to every one!

I have been drinking ACV and Black Strap Molasses for a month now, twice a day and it is an acquired taste but it has worked wonders for me so. Every month my period has been so heavy leaving me exhaused and depressed but this month has been so amazing. My period would normally be a 1week but it has been 4days and the heavy bleeding has been cut in half. I didnt know what to except but I decided to try these two products by faith and I have to say thank you Jesus and every one that have shared their testimony about using them. Even adding 1/2 a tsp of cayenne pepper to my grape juice made a difference for me. The taste is not great but I believe that it helped enormously. I thank God for finding this website and all the information it has to share.

Grateful, Nadia

Dear Nadia,

Try 2-3 teaspoons of Raw Unpasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar in 8 ounces of water once or twice a day. Some people take it six days a week, others daily. I have taken it almost daily for years with no problem. I got to where I liked my water better with a little vinegar. I haven't been using it so much lately as I have been drinking more herbal tea. I haven't had any ill effect from stopping. (In other words, I wasn't "addicted" to it.)

You can take 1 or 2 Tablespoons of Blackstrap Molasses a day. I would start with one. If you don't get the desired results, you can take 2. Some put it in coffee or tea. My children take it right off the spoon and like it pretty well. This can also be done indefinitely. If I take it all through a pregnancy, I don't get anemic. If you are taking 1 Tablespoon a day and are still having heavy bleeding, go ahead and take the second Tablespoon on heavy days. 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper in some grape juice is also really helpful to reduce blood flow. (An "at the moment" kind of remedy.)

Some people notice results quickly. For others, it can take many weeks or even a month or two to get the desired results.

I hope this helps you a lot. Please let us know what works for you!

I started taking the ACV and black strap molasses about a month ago, the first time I had my period there was no change, it was horrible and 3 break throughs and used about 5 packages of the ALWAYS over night pads in the purple, a total of 96 pads, this month I started my period and bought 4 packages, the first day was very light, the second day was very light and I really did have to change but 2 times during an 8 hr work day, but the 3rd day, I sneezed and has a big gush, but above all it has really not been that bad this time. I still have 1 package that I have not open and over half of a another package, so in 5 days I really only used about a 40 pads. I have a dr appointment with my gyn, so maybe next month will be even better, but I think the AVC and molasses works!!!

Hello, this is my first post. Thank you for your site and all the genuine advice, I love it xx I found this site when I was desperate to find a natural solution to my extremely heavy periods, ie. Flooding etc. This has gone on for 10 years. In my ignorance and embarrassment I accepted this as part of growing older I am now 45. It came to a head this summer when I felt ill and after a blood test I was told I was severely anemic 7.8, so doc prescribed iron sulphate for 2 months and then iron level back up to 10.8. Doctor prescribed transemic acid which my sister told me she and lots of her friends have been taking for years but I didn't want to take this as I am already on asthma medication and medication for allergen rhinitis.

Doctor sent me for a scan this showed extremely thick uterine wall and small fibroids and poss small cyst then they started to heavily push the mirena coil a type of hormone release internal mechanism which is implanted. I refused and was disappointed that my hormone imbalance was not being treated. I did notice that when I was taking the iron sulphate and not drinking coffee or having a glass of wine in the evenings then menstruation improved! But after I resumed old habits heavy menstruation became the norm.

So is this imbalance due to a liver problem? The liver coping with caffeine and alcohol breakdown and not processing hormones correctly? Anyway when I found your site I decided to take I the ACV morn and night in water (2 table spoons) and 1 teaspoon of organic black strap molasses morning and night and during the day possible around lunchtime and 1 other occasion if bleeding heavy. So I am happy to report that this worked amazingly well for me. Thankyou so much this is a life transformer and I am responding in the hope that in turn I can help someone else. If anyone else has any comments or tips on hormone imbalance then I would appreciate them. My sister who also had this imbalance is recovering from breast cancer and has had her ovaries removed.

I was reading about the heavy bleeding and experienced the same thing several years ago. I found out I was hypothyroid. Then my sister experienced the same thing and found she was hypothyroid also. We called it liver chunks.

Please go and get your thyroid levels checked. If you are hypothyroid, make sure you don't consume goitrogens which interfere with thyroid function such as soy products, uncooked broccoli or cabbage, peanuts or fluoride.

I am very, very happy today because I prayed to God to help to find a cure to my promblem and he did. I suffer with fibriod and cyst since I was 25 years old. I had a myomectomy to remove them in 1997 and they grew back with a vengenace. I then had terrible periods with heavy clothing and excruciating pains. I had to be wearing pampers as pads were always causing my clothes to be messed up. I also had very irregular periods and infertility. After still having the same problem after my surgery I went to a Iredologist and Naturapathic doctor who gave me a 3 days fasting and cleansing along with her own medicines and instruction of what not to eat. My period regulated (I now had regular cycle which I never had since the age of 16)and the pain and heavy bleeding went away. Three years later I came off the vegetarian diet and two years after that the problem started again. I still was unable to conceive and worst my periods became very very irregular as the years progressed. In 2005 I saw my period and it never came again until middle 2006. Then once in 2007 then again three times April,May and June 2008 after I had used flaxseed oil recommed by my friend to simulate its arrival. I did not see my period after that and in 2009 I became very depress because the flaxseed oil was not working I then thought I was in menopause I then was led by God to this site and must say the ACV, Blackstrap Molasses and 2 Flaxseed oil tablet has now so far restore my period with no heavy bleeding nor pain. I hardly feel the bulky fibriods nor the symptoms of the fibriods or cyst. I however still have not gotten pregnant yet. I am still hoping and praying this will happen soon.

Can anyone tell me of something that can assist me in getting pregnant after having myomectomy surgery. Thank you all very much.

If you are not allergic to bees, there are bee products like bee pollen and royal jelly that will definately increase your fertility... Hope this helps.

I can understand your pain. this is my story..I have suffered with irregular periods since i was 13 yrs old(menstral began at 9. was in long term committed realtionship for over 10yrs, never conceived, always had heavy periods and cramping but nevr thought i was infertal. In 2007 after I demanded an ultrasound (had a tummy as if i was 4mths pregnant)to figure out why my abdomen was getting bigger and not getting pregant. I was informed i had a fibroid. 6mths later after another ultrasound, was informed the fibroid grew 3x in size and now i had an additional small fibroid. immediately my period became out of control! could not go to work or go outside during my first 3days(it was almost as if someone shot me!)the dr said the only resolution was to have myomectomy which i had jan of 2008. as i was healing and getting ready to return back to work, all of sudden wasnt feeling well, went to the dr and SUPRISE I WAS PREGNANT only 2mths post surgery. I delivered my beautiful boy nov 2009 pregnancy and delivery went vry well. so dont loose hope i wish you well.

Hi I have a fibroid 2.2 in my uterus as well as polyps and endo thick wall since last two years I was bleeding heavily for around 10 days five months back this worsened and my periods would not stop. The doctor did a D&C on me in August and there was no malignant issue after five weeks of D&C. I got my menses which did not stop I was again bleeding heavily and getting big clots. The doctor put me on primolut N to regulate. When I stopped after 20 days I got my menses and I was back again to heavy bleeding. Again the doctor asked me to take primolut. Two weeks back I came across this website and immediately went and bought ACV and soda bicarb and also unsulphured molasses and started having this along with primolut. When I stopped the pill and got my menses the first day was okay but the second day was the worst of my life I had HUGE clot of blood almost the length and breadth of my pad and when I went to the toilet it fell off on the potty I was scared seeing the size of that... But after that I felt as if my body has settled down I had no more clots but as always the bleeding did not stop until even the 6th day and I was told to take primolut again...

Can Ted or anyone tell me why this happened? I have been religiously having ACV twice a day and molasses once or twice a day but still am bleeding, can ACV and primolut be taken together? Thanks so much in advance for any response- appreciate it."

Further to my previous post I wish to tell my experience of my second menses after starting ACV and BSM. I was on the pill stopped the pill and after three days I got my menses which after years WERE NORMAL, NO HEAVY BLEEDING, NO BLOOD CLOTS and finally after four days I stopped bleeding and it's two weeks since and I did not need to take primolut to stop the bleeding. I am still in an unbelievable state for I have been bleeding since months, so ACV works for me, I now have 2 tsp everyday.

THANK YOU TED THANK YOU EARTH CLINIC AND ALL THE WONDERFUL LADIES WHO SHARED THEIR EXPERIENCES

Hi, Even I had over bleeding problem. I tried this remedy and working over bleeding.

Try out:

Wash hibiscus flowers well and remove the petals separately.

Heat a pan and boil milk and petals. Let it boil nicely until milk gets a pale lavender colour.

Add sugar and Filter it and drink hot or cold.

Thanks

I had the same problem. I have PCOS and had an ovary removed. I had fertility issues. I had to take Clomid in a pill form in order to get pregnant also going on the Atkins diet helped with the weight gain of this and allowed me to have three beautiful children with only one ovary. Please speak with your Dr. about this and good luck and God Bless!

I am 45 and have had a couple of very heavy periods due to perimenopause. Two years ago I had my first bad one due to stress with a family member. Period was really long but not that bad with heaviness until one night when it started gushing to the point that I got scared really bad. Called a family friend who is a Naturopath and she recommended I take Cayenne until it settled down which I did. That period finally ended after about 6 weeks and things were fairly normal until this period came.

It was about a week and a half late (not normal) and has been going for about 7 weeks now. Most days not too heavy but have had some really bad days too, with gushing and clots. I've tried ACV, blackstrap molasses, and some herbal blends which I'm not sure if I can mention on here. The ACV slowed it a bit, as did the blackstrap molasses but the latter gives me a bad headache. Cayenne makes me feel weird and I can't take that either.

What worked for me so far to slow the gushing is Arnica homeopathic pills. I've a huge fan of the cream for bruising and bumps and had the idea to try the pills for this bleeding. It worked and slowed it dramatically within an hour or so (I took a couple of doses). Flow stayed light as long as I took a couple more doses that day. So far, so good and I've only needed one thin pad all day today. Hoping it stops for good after all this time.

Hope this information helps someone else who may have tried all the other remedies listed - as I have - with minimal results.

Thanks for your mention of Arnica. I recently was told the same thing. I have a friend who took it postpartum to prevent heavy bleeding. I am 44 and suffer from PCOS and typically don't have periods often but when I do they are like 2-3 weeks long of constant spotting and a medium flow in the middle. But typically once a year I will get hit with the mother of all periods where I will lose about 3/4oz per hour. The reason I know this is because I use a menstrual cup and it has measurements on it. Which I know is way too much. I have been spotting now for about 3 weeks and was feeling quite bad tonight. I have started taking the ACV today in water and am hoping it will prevent any horrific flows tomorrow. If I can take this and Molasses to help with my cycle, I will gladly take it until I go through the change.

i either go swimming (with a tampon) or lay in the bath for an hour or so (with nothing) let the water in and push it back out. I did this and period SLOW'D down very fast... I was changing every 15-20 minutes with leaking too...before i got in the bath....so water helps me!!
