Slowing Cataract Progression: Evidence-Based Natural Remedies

I have heard that a cup of Rue Tea once a day has had positive effects on Cataracts. Has anyone used or heard if this is true?

Get rid of cataracts without surgery.

Just have the eye doctor call the nearest compounding pharmacy and ask for the following formulation. DMSO 6.25% Glutathione 1.25% Vitamin C 1.25%.

The drops sting a bit, but the stinging passes after about 30 seconds.

The lenses of our eyes respond to high blood sugar levels by helping to remove some of the excess. Unfortunately , the lenses have nowhere to store this access sugar, so over time, it literally " condenses" into cataracts. In other words you could be suffering from sugar-insulin metabolism. So try the eyedrops as a preventative and as a cure. It works for most but not all.

CATARACTS ARE NOT A SURFACE CONDITION OF THE EYE - they are a clouding of the "lense" of the eye which sits behind the Iris and Pupil. (the above is a physical impossibility!!! )

As an FYI - I have spent many years researching cataract causes/hopeful cures. I had my 1st cataract surgery when I was 35 yrs old. As with any disease I believe there is a necessity to understand the "cause" which is often (and still is in my case) a mystery. Even with all the doctors I visited (and got educated from) the most valuable information I gathered was from NORD (the National Organization for Rare Disorders). I believe they list/describe about 19 different Cataracts. Though cataracts are far from "rare" the knowledge and descriptions listed there could educate more than a few of the doctors I have seen over the years and definitely enlightened me on my quest for a cause and a cure. YES, you do have to pay for any reports you order (this site is aimed at assisting Docs/medical community as well) but in my case it was well worth it and didn't cost that much!

Alpha Lipoic Acid for Cataracts

During the last two years I have been testing the effects of nutrients on my glaucoma and cataracts (not for my myopia and accommodation which have improved recently after I asked for weaker lenses and asigmatism ? but I don't know if nutrients made a difference). For me the cataracts went away in less than a year (both eyes; first evidence noticed in a week) with 100 mg of alpha lipoic acid per day. Last month (after having started pine bark extract [200 mg] for my tinnitus) the doc said I've got new ones ? so I doubled the ALA dose.

After the cataracts had gone away The first time the glaucoma (by retinal, optic nerve, and visual field evidence) went away after I had started 1 g fish oil (w/ EPA and DHA omega-3s).

For others the lack of those nutrients may not seem to be the problem, and it's worth knowing that I was already taking extra vitamin C (1 g for colds resistance), D (2000 IU for bone health, etc. ), Calcium (500 mg with Mg for osteoporosis), E (400 IU for benefits including eye health), and iodine-iodide (Lugol's soln. 12 mg for benefits including eye health). That's on top of a Paleo diet for ten years that is mostly raw, organic vegetables, sprouts, fruits, nuts, fish (wild salmon) And fowl. At age 66 now, my BP has been about 110/70 at 55, blood chem perfect, And I've had to continue prescription drops for my elevated IOP for lack of a natural alternative.

I researched a book called Physician's Reference Notebook and now have an excerpt from that book on what Edgar Cayce told some people to do:

"The following is a summary of the most commonly prescribed treatments. They are aimed at improving the circulation and eliminations and in allowing for better attunement to spiritual forces to provide coordination of the physical, mental and spiritual:

1. Osteopathy. Adjustments in the upper cervical and dorsal segments (C1, 2, 3; DI, 2, 3); sometimes in the lower dorsal coordinating with the upper lumbar. Frequency: about twice weekly for five to six weeks with rest periods of two to three weeks. This was by far the most commonly prescribed treatment.

2. Massage. With peanut oil (sometimes a combination of oils). Frequency is variable. Again twice weekly would be reasonable, though in one instance it was recommended on a daily basis before retiring. Emphasis to spine, mastoid, temple and chin areas.

3. Violet ray treatment. Sometimes recommended only after the first osteopathic series. Would be applied along the spine, head and neck areas for three minutes, then with the double-eye applicator over closed eyes for another one-and-a-half minutes about three times per week. A Glyco-Thymoline or Epsom salt pack may be used over same areas for 20-30 minutes prior to the violet ray treatments. * Discharge from the eyes may occur with these treatments. This should be wiped off with a non-irritating, antiseptic solution. * Potato poultice may also be used after the violet ray treatment. Wash off with weak eye solution that will remove inflammation drawn by the poultice.

4. Eliminations. At least once or twice daily using natural laxatives, e.g. , Eno salts, Fletcher's Castoria, bicarbonate of soda with cracker crumbs, etc. ; colonics, if necessary.

5. Diet. A wholesome diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Seafoods are allowed but no meats or sweets. Raw carrots, lettuce, celery, watercress and the like are beneficial.

6. Vibratory treatment. Another way of stimulating blood flow is, first, rub the body with cold water to produce shock, followed by fast vibratory treatment (reading 3943-1). Frequency and duration not specified. Twice weekly treatment is suggested lasting 20-30 minutes.

7. Spiritual counseling, prayer, and meditation. These are other modalities available to ensure integration of the triune body, mind and spirit. "

An Osteopath that uses the "old school of thought" is hard to find these days - sometimes you will need to go to a Chiropractor instead. Hope this helps!

I read a study a while back that in lab rats scientists were able to create cataracts and reverse them through the use of Beta-Carotene. Carrot Juice (made fresh not bought) is very high in Beta-Carotene. Maybe you should try that or look for a reputable supplement.

Brook, you said that the 2 drops of cold pressed castor Oil in the eye at bed time will remove the cataract. How do you know this to work? I've read this also but no one has ever said something or some treatment really worked for them or someone they know. I know how I got the cataracts from taking baby asprin for Years for my heart problems and now I am on coumadin to keep my blood thin. The cold pressed castor oil does NOT hurt the eye but it lubricates it as when your eyes start showing they are getting dry the cataracts follow. I have been putting castor oil in my eyes for more than 1 1/2 years maybe 2 yrs. To keep them lubricated at night and upon awaking I put them in again and lay for an hour, also later in the afternoon to lubricate them again. If they start to dry out they get bothered and itchy etc.

They have "NOT" gone away but I am hoping that keeping them lubricated is slowing it down until "IF" there is something I can reverse them without surgery. There is some kind of eye drops developed by a Russian Dr that are suppose to dissolve them but they burn like the dickens and made my vision more blurry. It was $50 per month. I wish Someone who really knew how to dissolve or reverse them would post it out here for all us suffers. I think I heard ACV helps but I do ALL that!

Galactosemia Causes Congenital Cataracts most of the time! The Dairy products you eat during Pregnancy! Termed Galactosemic cataract!!!!

Thank you so much for the reply. In my daughter's case, cataract was there only in one eye. Her right eye is completely normal with good eye sight. So the problem of near and far vision is only for left eye. Please advise if the strategy will work in this case too.

To Guest Mother from Toronto, according to leading Sydney eye surgeon Richard Rawson, lens implants of different focus can be used, one side for distance and the other eye for near vision which generally avoids the need for glasses. Apparently the brain selects the correct focus at any distance automatically. He also discourages the use of variable focus implant lenses as they do not work and cause glaring.

My previous post sounded like a contradiction. When I said the castor oil did no harm I meant there was no burning or unpleasant effect to my eye when I used it. As to whether it made the cataract worse, I am not saying it did. What I conclude is that cataracts get worse no matter what you do.

Castor oil for cataracts—I have faithfully applied castor oil to one eye for three months. I very much hoped it would remove it, but my eye doctor did not find any improvement at all, and in fact, said it was worse. To those who wondered about it's safety, I can say it did no harm. My eyelashes became softer and somewhat fuller. I used the regular castor oil from the pharmacy because I didn't know how to get the cold-pressed. I don't know if that mattered.

In the phillipine this plant have several names: Ulasimang Bato | Pansit-Pansitan (Peperomia pellucida) -

It is effective in fighting cataracts, arthritis and gout. The leaves can be eaten fresh (about a cupful) as salad or like tea. For the decoction, boil a cup of clean chopped leaves in 2 cups of water. Boil for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain, let cool and drink a cup after meals (3 times day).

I have 2 questions for Dr J from Bombay.

1) What is the cause of cogenital cataract.
2) My daughter was born with. Docs removed the lens to remove the cataract. Is there any possible way to improve her vision as docs say that they can fix lens but she still needs to wear glasses to fix far off vision. Please help.

Hello Kelly, I went looking for the answer to your question and found one posted on Earth Clinic.com under castor oil cures. It was posted by another sharer and does state that a couple of drops of castor oil in the eyes nightly will dissolve cataracts. I found a lot of other interesting stuff while looking, including that castor oil also has antibacterial action.

I can't vouch for the removal of the cataracts, but I can vouch for it does no harm to the eye, only good, I have never had a painful eye from getting foreign object in it clear so quickly. I will use it first for eye problems in the future.

for Joyce in Joelton - castor oil: Joyce, I saw your comments on using castor oil in your eye. I had previously read something about using a couple of drops in the eye each night for cataracts. Have you heard anything about this? I was thinking of trying it on my dog who has a catarac. My vet says to try it, she doesn't think it could cause any harm. Thanks! Kelly

It seems that in Ayurveda, Peperomia pellucida "Skiny Bush" (its common english name) is it only used for infectious diseases of the skin. Although it is now being study as a possible anti arthritis drug its not traditionally used for that nor eye diseases. It is used in Africa for eye diseases and in Creole Medicine (Trinadad) for its antibacterial properties. As far as use for eye diseases it seems that the milky juice from stem and leaves are used traditionally for eye diseases. So tablet form may not benificial nor is it available that i can see so far?

Any natural cateract treatment like this must include cleansing dietary protocol to be totally effective. All forms of topical eye treatment for cateracts will fall short unless internal toxins are addressed.

There is a fantastic book in India called "Health in your Hands" By Devendra Vora which details a Cateract cure using a holistic protocol. He claims that poor flow of blood and "electricity", pituitary gland damage, and local lymph gland toxicity causes Cateracts. The sugar toxins that build up in the eye are not removed and "throw of carbon". The carbon causes this transparency! He also states that excess heat that accumulates in the liver has built up and due to suppression of fever and common cold etc. over the years with modern pharma drugs the heat never gets released from the body so over time the liver overheats. This goes in check with the Traditional Chinese Medicine view very well! Liver=Eyes!

Rx: Triphala powder internally as a eye wash diluted in water overnight acts to cure the problem combined with drinking colloidal mineral waters combined with hand reflex and local eye area acupressure treatment. Also cleansing diet of green juices and whole foods. Eye exercises are included such as looking into the sun at sunrise/sunset and doing eye rolling exercises and palming. He also mentions urine therapy also which was used by Indian Prime Minister Desai for his cateract problem.

At present i have given this treatment to several patients which is similar as above but more simple and easier to understand the complicated explanation in the book. At present there has been complete reduction of worsening of the condition and improvement is occuring but its not happening overnight.

Another bit of information for Helen from Long Island who wonders why castor oil bottles may say not to use near the eyes: I just read about pink eye in the ailments section on this (earth clinic)site -- and one of the cures given is drops of castor oil put in the eyes. The person recommending it said they used it repeatedly as needed for different instances of pink eye - so it would appear to be safe, as least from their comments.

Someone from Long Island was asking why the label on castor oil said not to use near the eyes. Well, I called 2 different companies that sell castor oil and asked about that. Both said that they do not actually know if is is harmful for the eyes or not, but the FDA or somebody requires they put that warning on the label if they have not tested to see if it is safe for use in the eyes. It is because they had done skin testing that it is legal for the bottle to say it is safe to apply to the skin.

I'd like to know if anyone else other than the one "yea" testimony has proof it is safe since I'd like to try it as well.

I went to the health food store to get the cold pressed castor oil and on the bottle it says not to get it near the eyes. I am a firm believer of castor oil and have used it for years, but not the cold pressed. What is the difference and why does it say not to use it near the eyes?

I am seeing my eye doctor to have him set up an appointment for the eye surgeon to have my cataracts removed. I would like to try this remedy. How do you go about it? Do you put it right on your eye? A couple of drops of Castor Oil (cold pressed only) put into the eyes right before you go to sleep will also get rid of cataracts.

Peperomia Pellucida is called Toyakandha and Varshabhoo in SANSKRIT, Mashitandu Chedi in MALYALAM. It grows in wasteland, along roadside throughout India and western ghat OF Maharastra during rainy season. Though used in Ayurvedic medicine I could not find any formulation yet. Try Ayurvedic medical stores in the south.

Glyconutrients were given to my mother on 15-dec-2007 for Cataracts and Glaucoma. My mom is blind in on eye and has 40% vision in the other eye.
