I had been dealing with severe bleeding gums for the past 5 to 6 years, each year getting progressively worse. I knew the consequences of this continuing long term and was desperate to try every natural or otherwise remedy. I tried more toothpastes I can remember, brand name mouthwashes, “organic” whatever washes, powders, hydrogen peroxide, ACV. Nothing worked. Every day brushing my teeth was a bloody mess. I kept imagining I would lose my teeth some day and resigned to the inevitable. Until I did some research which changed my life forever. I know people are looking for a “natural” remedy on this site. I have found a couple of remedies for other ailments which worked for me, but unfortunately in this case there is nothing posted here which worked.

Let me begin by stating the obvious, which many people don't realize regarding gum diseases. The root cause of nearly all gum ailments--caries, gingivitis, bleeding gums, etc are caused by a bacterial infection in your mouth. These bacteria colonize your gums and teeth and live and multiply by consuming the food we eat, but especially sugars and carbs which is why we are told since birth how bad it is to eat sugar and not brush your teeth before going to sleep for example. The reason why gums keep deteriorating despite our best efforts to brush and use washes (and in my case, years of increased hygiene on my part) is because this is ultimately a progressive infection. Like all bacterial infections, if left untreated at the source they can and will progress towards irreparable damage. We all know some infections can kill you in days like anthrax, or slowly for 20 years like syphillis. Gum disease is like the latter. We can cure those infections and plenty more with antibiotics, so why then I thought is there no obvious treatment for gum disease which is caused by a bacterial infection in the same way? Well...it turns out there actually is a cure. It has been known since at least 2002 and since with numerous studies published by Walter J. Loesche et al. Look up "The nonsurgical treatment of patients with gum disease: results after five years.” From the article:

"RESULTS: The initial treatment benefits were sustained, as the number of teeth needing periodontal surgery or extraction was 0.06 teeth per patient after 1.1 year, 0.22 after 2.3 years, 0.51 after 3.6 years and 0.86 after 5.1 years. CONCLUSIONS: A noninvasive treatment regimen for an anaerobic infection in teeth seriously compromised by gum disease resulted in a reduced need for surgery or tooth extraction for at least five years after completion of the initial treatment"

What is the treatment? A one week course of 500mg of Metronidazole twice a day. A cheap and readily available antibiotic in since the 1960s. This cured my gum disease exactly as this study proved. 3 days after beginning treatment I noticed a reduction in blood after brushing of 75% and by day 7 there was not a drop of blood when I spit out the toothpaste for the first time in at least 5 years. I broke down and cried before I could even swish my mouth with water. I was that overcome with emotion. I literally could not believe what I was seeing. Not only has the bleeding stopped completely but the tartar buildup has gone away as the bacteria was exterminated. I did not even remember what a healthy mouth tasted and felt like anymore. You do not need to try anything else, and you do not need to get your teeth pulled out before it is actually the very last resort, which orthodontists do not tell you since they are not even aware of these studies. There is a cure for gum disease. It is called Metronidazole, and in one week it cures it. Beg your GP for a prescription or acquire some through one of the better known overseas pharmacies. It is dirt cheap. It works. It is a miracle. It has changed my life and if you've kept reading this all the way to the end and I manage to change someone else's life before it's too late and the damage is irreparable I will be happy.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Christina (FL) on 11/21/2023

Food grade hydrogen peroxide, (diluted with water, of course, 1 capful to 1/2 c water) is exactly this: food grade, more compatible with the body. I feel a night and day difference with this over store bought hydrogen peroxide. 'You' may call it 'regular' hydrogen peroxide, but I would call the store bought 'irregular', it is loaded with heavy metals, it's not meant to be put in the body. Food grade hydrogen peroxide, 3.5%, isn't too far off in price and you don't need as much of it. Also, I've read a Pubmed research study that one should only use this once every 3 days as it can cause dental enamel erosion, adding onto the concern from what the scientist stated above.

LED Lights

I've been told since about age 24 that I would lose the bottom row of my teeth because they are crowded and prone to gum disease. I had one deep cleaning done at that time and started flossing. Though I continued to have bleeding when I brushed or flossed.

I could not afford regular dental care so I didn't go to the dentist again until my early forties. It was then I was told my gum disease was worse and that I would need deep cleanings every 3 months in order to save my teeth.

Once again, I could only afford one deep cleaning. With no insurance that costed about 1200 dollars.

I started researching like crazy what I could do on my own to help. I found information about blue LED lights killing gum disease bacteria (discovered after dentists noticing improved gum health after using blue lights to whiten teeth). Then about red light improving inflammation, circulation and healing. And infrared light that might even help regrow bone and gum tissue and help with pain and sensitivity. So I bought a DPL medical grade device mouth guard which has all three and started using it every day.

I finally went to the dentist again recently and was all prepared for more deep cleanings and bad news. I told her my grim history of gum disease and she almost did not seem to believe me! She said my gums were pink and healthy looking with little to no bleeding and that she wasn't "falling into any pockets" as she was cleaning my teeth. She said there was barely any plaque to clean off and that was after not going to the dentist in 6 years! I 100% contribute this to using the mouth light every night.

Unfortunately, I do have bone loss from my previous bout which showed on the x-ray and one tooth that has gum recession. She told me to put baking soda around the tooth twice a day and it would "strengthen" the bone that is there.

Between baking soda and the LED lights, my breath has never been better! I used to wake up with an awful taste in my mouth and I don't ever get that anymore. My teeth feel very smooth and look clean and white.

It seems that red light has many wonderful benefits to it and was discovered by NASA. It is even used by many practices now for all sorts of afflictions. I believe light therapy is at the forefront of future advancements to help many problems, gum disease being one of them.

I suffer from mild periodontosis, I developed a spot between my front teeth which was painful bleeding and raw red. I could not brush my teeth in this spot as I bled too much. I used the water pick which it made it worse. For weeks I was trying different approaches, oil pulling, turmeric, grape seed extract, colloidal silver, mouthwashes, etc, but nothing worked and the infection was getting worse day by day.

One evening I swished my mouth with pure apple cider vinegar. After a few hours, I went to the bathroom and looked at my gums. I could not believe it. The redness has gone in 80%, and it looked like the gum started to heal. I'm so surprised this was the best remedy in weeks, will continue to use for a few days.

I am glad you are having some relief from the Hydrogen Peroxide ... but IMO you need to get to the "root" of the infection (no pun intended). There is a reason for it! From someone who has experienced more dental work in my lifetime (I'm 64) than anyone should have to (due to bad dentistry), I have been "clean" for years now, due to a very competent biological dentist. The key is to take care and be proactive when it comes to oral health. Dental issues can linger for YEARS, possibly making things worse. Just my two cents.

Did you brush you teeth with the hydrogen peroxide or just swish it around your mouth? Did you do it mixed with water or straight from the bottle? Thank you!

Do not use peroxide in your mouth if you have any metal, especially mercury in your mouth as it will leach out the metals.

Hydrogen Peroxide for gum infection

After reading posts from this website for gum ulcer remedies, I came across one using hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide completely eradicated my infection. This was after my dentist gave me 2 rounds of antibiotics ( 2 months apart) and the infection came back a 3rd time. This infection was very difficult to be rid of as it was under a permanent bridge. I used the 3% store grade 3x a day at first, for a few months. Now I just use it 2x a day to maintain a clean mouth after brushing and using my Waterpik flosser. I swoosh it around my mouth for 1 minute, then spit it out and rinse. It has also done wonders for eliminating plaque. I just had a dental checkup and my hygenist was very pleased. She said I had very little plaque. I am so happy the infection has not come back, and it's been 6 months since the last one. I did not want to go back on antibiotics since they weren't doing the job.

According to the following link

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/collagen/

Several high-protein foods are believed to nurture collagen production because they contain the amino acids that make collagen—glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. These include fish, poultry, meat, eggs, dairy, legumes, and soy.

Collagen production also requires nutrients like zinc, which is found in shellfish, legumes, meats, nuts, seeds, and whole grains; and vitamin C from citrus fruits, berries, leafy greens, bell peppers, and tomatoes.

According to the website https://healthyeating.sfgate.com/wheat-germs-vitamin-mineral-composition-9508.html, a quarter-cup serving of wheat germ offers 3.5 milligrams of zinc -- 44 percent of the recommended daily intake for women and 32 percent for men, according to intake guidelines set by the Institute of Medicine.

According to the website https://www.eatingwell.com/article/2052728/6-foods-with-more-vitamin-c-than-an-orange/ broccoli, kiwi, bell peppers, pineapple and papaya are high in vitamin C and other important nutrients.

sandy,

You can try Glycine as an amino acid to help build collagen in the body. Glycine is the most abundant amino acid in collagen. There are other supplements that help the body form collagen such as Lysine, Proline, Threonine and Vitamin C and these can all be used with Glycine to increase collagen production in the body.

Sorry, there is no such thing as plant-based collagen. It's a protein found in humans and animals. Peptides are also animal based. If it says hydrolyzed, they could have used hydrochloric acid to break down the collagen into peptides. The plant-based ones are typically called a collagen builder. If it says plant collagen, there is simply no such thing.

Oral Probiotics & Clove
Posted by Snow (UK) on 03/27/2022
★★★★☆

I have one deep infected gum pocket front top tooth. Have generally been struggling with periodontal disease for a long time with most gums. Recently this one pocket became really infected, (lots of gum recession too which is so depressing), it resulted in a root canal last November, but still the infection has continued even after two rounds of antibiotics. (Pus seeping out when pressing the gum).

I have been tearing my hair out trying all kinds of protocols that should have worked such as Hydrogen Peroxide, Propolis (sleeping with cotton all of propolis against the gum), salt water rinses to name a few.

Anyway, I finally decided to try two new things. Clove which I have been rubbing against the gum and sometimes just resting a clove again against the gum. This definitely helps and I am thinking it is because it is anti parasitic?

But the missing link that I am really excited about is probiotics! There are special ones for oral health that you suck. Look for good quality/good reviews. Also have bought a good probiotic for gut health too. I feel it's all interconnected. Two days later I have no pus coming out of the gum for the first time in months. At bedtime, my protocol is rinse mouth with sea salt water, brush with propolis toothpaste, a really good clean using a water pick with bicarbonate soda (PH). Or you can just gargle and clean with it if you don't have a waterpic. Then finally I suck the oral probiotic.

Do some research on gum disease and probiotics and you will see there are quite a lot of compelling evidence it can help re populate the mouth with the right kind of bacteria to fight the bad... I'll report back in a while to say if it has really worked but I am feeling very encouraged by the past few days.

I am also during the day time rubbing some clove 'dust' against the gum.. this can also be clove oil but I am just using crushed up cloves.

If I had the money I would go straight back to the clinic I used to visit who did 2 hr laser therapy (I did about 6 sessions over a few months). This brought my pockets down from 8/10 to 2/3 and some bone regrowth, but sadly it has all come back again as not been able to visit them for a number of years.

Good luck anyone suffering too. Its a nightmare and upsetting to have such gum loss and potentially lose teeth later down line if I dont' get on top of it but hopeful this new protocol might be the missing link! TBD

On the bright side, if you do lose all your teeth you might be protecting yourself from dementia. In former times probably most people had all their teeth removed and dementia was rare. Now we live for years with some degree of gingivitis and it's known that these gingival bacteria cross the blood-brain barrier and are associated with dementia. If, however, your teeth are in reasonable shape, do everything you can to keep those bacteria at bay by flossing, using wooden picks, water picks, etc. For a long-standing issue with an implant that has a deep pocket and is really hard to keep from being inflamed, I've found twice daily mouthwashes and coconut oil brushing most helpful, in addition to the above.

The citrus bioflavonoid hesperidin has always helped my gums. I knew that citrus bioflavonoids helped my gums, but I didn't know which bioflavonoid. Then I searched hesperidin and it said hesperidin was useful for gums. I found this to be true.

In 2010 in my mid-50's, my gums would occasionally bleed and some of my teeth were slightly loose. A daily 500 mg capsule of hesperidin corrected both of these these problems. I would order capsules from SwansonVitamins or PipingRock, but now I order the 500 grram bag of hesperidin powder from BukSupplements and take just a level 1/4 measuring teaspoon which is about 500 mg mornings and evenings.

I also had sensitive teeth at the time, but 2 capsules twice per day of the NOW brand "Calcium Apatite Caps" corrects this and prevents cavities.

ACV as a mouth wash is a bad idea as the acid erodes your enamel. Charcoal, baking soda and H2O2 are all much better. And yes the store bought HP says it can be used as a mouth wash. I really doubt that something that can be poured on an open wound can harm you when used as a mouth wash. Please cite studies and references when claiming that regular HP is harmful in any way.

Baking Soda

There is no harm if you swallow some baking soda whatsoever. I take baking soda all the time to cure heart burn and also to stop a cold in its track. I haven't had a cold or the flu in many years. Also, people use baking soda in cancer treatment, sometimes as a mixture of black strap molasses and baking soda. Also baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is produced by your body to neutralize the strong stomach acid before food enters your small intestine.

To be honest, I don't know if what I have is gum disease but it's just bacteria causing a bad taste in my mouth that gets progressively worse unless I kill the bugs. I think it's due to dry mouth issues.

Anyway without getting into all that too much, I've found that tea tree oil diluted in high alcohol mouthwash does the trick. I don't know how toxic it is in this application though as I know the mouth absorbs things quite easily. Hopefully it's ok. But yes it does work about as well as chlorhexidine but without the change to sense of taste.

It's very odd because I find the high alcohol mouthwash on its own doesn't seem to work and the tea tree in water by itself doesn't seem to work either. So... I'm still experimenting!!

I am trying to find a better solution still though. Maybe hydrogen peroxide but I never had much success with that in the past. I'll try again :)

My husband had old crowns and he had to have them replaced. I can say honestly the new ones are very good.

Oregano Oil (or Oil of Oregano), the liquid, is VERY strong, and would not pleasant if used straight. I have found that diluting a couple of drops in water, is even difficult to swish around in my mouth. What I've done is put a drop or 2 (these are very tiny drops from the bottle's dropper) right onto the toothbrush bristles, let it sit there for a minute or two, then put the toothpaste on the brush. Then wet the brush with water, then brush your teeth with it. Yes, it will sting, but the toothpaste should help. Then rinse out your mouth real well. You'll still taste the Oregano Oil, but after about 10 minutes, the strong taste will go away.

When Covid-19 started going around I began taking an extra 500 mg of vitamin C and 50 mg of zinc picolinate per day to keep my immune system strong. After a month of this I ran out of the zinc picolinate and stopped taking it.

A couple of days later, I realized that my gums were more tender and bleeding a bit more than they had for weeks. This made me think that maybe the zinc picolinate had been helping my gums heal. I looked it up online to find that there are some studies suggesting a correlation between low zinc levels and bleeding gums.

I now take 100 mg of zinc picolinate in the morning and 100 mg in the evening and my mouth is loving it.

Oil Pulling
Posted by David (Chadron, Nebraska) on 04/03/2018

Interesting post, Lauraloo. Am oil pulling with a rounded teaspoon of coconut oil, finding this quite effective in keeping the areas between teeth much cleaner.

Am thinking that 20 minutes of brushing each day may well be on the excessive side. Please know that a dentist's technician had also informed me years ago that my gums were in critical need of the "peeling back and scraping", and that I was "at risk of possible heart problems" among other unpleasantness because of this. My intuition strongly shouted "No", and during a second dental exam at another dentist's office I was subsequently assured that my gums were all perfectly fine. There are way too many doctors and dentists who think we're all money cows. No surprise really, as the medical industry is the 5th largest on Earth.

Having said that, you could well be in need of the procedure, though perhaps a second opinion from a reputable dentist's office may be in order for you. Am suggesting: Just saying "No" to the dark fear tactics so commonly employed by the medical industry as a whole. Darkness is parasitic in nature and it feeds on fear. Without fear it cannot feed and it flees. Am wishing you well.

Stumbled on this site after using castor oil after brushing for 20 minutes daily or pretty much daily. I have Medicaid which allows $500 per year for a dentist. The dentist wants to do deep gum cleaning because of 4 mm on 2 quadrants. I'm only allowed one quadrant per year on Medicaid! I don't know what effect castor oil has done on my gums but after much reading on this site, and seeing the whitening of my teeth for myself I can feel assured my assumption I'm helping my gums is correct with castor oil pulling. I love this site. I was glad to see some more recent posts so I hope the site stays up. I'm almost 50 and need what's left!

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Val9000 (New York, Ny) on 01/09/2018 2 posts

I believe most of the regulars who use and post on this website are referring to food grade peroxide when they say H2O2, which must be diluted down for specific uses. I usually use the 12% (because it's less volatile than the 35% F.G. H2O2), add about 1 heaping TBSP of Celtic salt and dilute the H2O2 to around 1 part per 6 or more parts distilled water for a mouth wash, shake & try it, adding more water, so the mixture is strong enough to be effective, but not strong enough to give a burning sensation after gargling several times in a row.

I believe the problem about killing more than just bacteria is what the NON-food grade kind of hydrogen peroxide sold at all pharmacies (that says on the bottle to dilute 1 part peroxide to one part water to make a mouthwash). It has toxic impurities, and you can't ingest it after diluting, but you CAN drink diluted F.G. H2O2. I got some kind of food poisoning after eating a tasty fried fish off a food cart in Mexico City and immediately got capsules with instructions to take 16 every 6 hrs to kill every kind of possible parasite, but after 7 days of that and still vomiting all day long, I remembered the instructions on my bottle of F.G. H2O2 that tells how much to add per litre of water and to drink each liter within 8 hrs, so I followed those instructions and was COMPLETELY healed in less than 24 hrs, like nothing ever happened. Nonetheless, I just read that raw, organic apple cider vinegar or even white vinegar kills 99% of all bacteria & viruses, and it is very good as a household cleaner when diluted and is non-toxic to smell it, or get it on your skin, and is edible, so maybe a certain dilution of ACV would be a better mouthwash to cure gingivitis than F.G. H2O2. I've heard many times that ACV kills the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers, so it may have cured my food poisoning, also. My mother used to put alcohol to hold for a minute or 2 in our ears if we got an ear-ache and that worked very well. I got great results with the same concentration of F.G. H2O2 as for my mouthwash minus the Celtic salt. I'm not so sure about putting diluted white vinegar in my ears with a dropper to prevent ear aches, as I occasionally do with diluted H2O2 in the amount I stated above. I believe the same people who say don't put peroxide on cuts, say not to put alcohol on cuts either. Perhaps after washing with soap(with ~40% of it, white vinegar I mixed in, which I already use for washing hands & dishes, and then putting some Neosporin on the cut could be a superior treatment for cuts. We can look further for vinegar mouthwash as a cure for gingivitis on this section of Earth Clinic and see how many votes it got for working for that. I've always liked hydrogen peroxide for cuts because it barely stings. They say that when peroxide stops bubbling that means it has killed all the germs. I've always liked the idea that when I put the diluted as above F.G. H2O2 (without salt) in my ear, I just waited until it stopped bubbling in side my ear canal before sitting upright and letting it come out. I'd feel better trying well diluted in distilled water, organic, FILTERED ACV, than some unnatural combination of toxic drugs purported to cure ear aches - I don't believe it would work - but I'd like to see several people on Earth Clinic say they've tried it in their ears or as mouthwash, and it WORKED, 1st.

Let's read all the experiences & votes about it on Earth Clinic!
