TED'S REMEDIES

05/31/2007: Anonymous writes: "Dear Ted, You seem quite knowledgeable on the topic of strep throat, I'm hoping you can help. My son 8yrs old is experiencing reoccurring strep throat and has had three rounds of antibiotics in the last two years. He has it again, today, and I've begun the cayenne pepper rinse, in addition to essential oil steams. He has red splotches on the back of his throat and only minor pain but he looks quite sick. I know the long-term risks of antibiotics and am determined to beat this. I came across a comment you made regarding alkalinity for strep (baking soda?). Should I just rinse his mouth/gargle a few times a day? Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. I am considering a constitutional remedy (homeopath consultation) since I heard it is possible he could be a carrier and when he gets run down will get it over and over. Thank you for any time you can give to this."

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "You can do as many baking soda mouthwash rinse as you wish. When making a mixture, 1 tablespoon in 1/2 glass of water, should be a saturated solution enough, then add 3-6 drops of hydrogen peroxide 3% if possible. Do the mouthwash or sip very small amount so it FLOWS slowly down the throat (in amount of say 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon every 5 minutes - but try the 1/4 for a child. For an adult it is closer to like 1/2 to 1 teaspoon. If done for about 20 times, most of the pain should go away. Actually it is more like 10-15 times for me. The key is frequency of mouthwash rinse, and sipping that helps a lot.

Generally in a severe strep throat problem, I won't consider cayenne peppers. If you want to make a specialized mixture JUST only the mouthwash and no sipping, then add 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt, plus 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and 3-6 drops of H2O2 3%. If accidental swallowing, will cause loose stools, but sometimes the body needs to clear of itself of toxic buildup in the stomach.

There are many formulas I have against the strep throat, but much of the problem is actually obtaining the needed materials. Baking soda is perhaps the easiest to find. To increase the body's resistance, and in event of such sickness, usually 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with a small squeeze of lime (such as 4 teaspoon) and some 1/4 glass of water and let the child drink that. Wait for the fizz to finish reacting for about 5 minutes. This will alkalize the blood to prevent the strep or virus from entering the bloodstream. Usually a biofilm is formed before a major cold is underway and sometimes adding 1-2 drops of iodine tincture helps breaks down the biofilm in a mouthwash situation, if that were the case, but yours may not be necessary. Drink plenty of warm green tea, WITHOUT SUGAR AND WITHOUT MILK is necessary. You can do a swishing of green tea, in the mouth with a slow sip every minutes a much as you wish for this. The green tea will kill some strep, and break up the biofilm too. However, I will keep this green tea after the maximum mouthwash and sipping has been reached. Adding a pinch of sea salt in the green tea may further help kill, but this is usually not necessary unless the strep is aggressive and this kills the strep by hyperosmolarity.

I am not against homeopathy, but sometimes they put the homeopathic remedies in sugar cubes. Those are not recommended since the sugar fuels the strep throat. Avoid homeopathy that uses sugar. Keep homeopathic medicines away from mobile phones, t.v., radiator and microwave, they tend to get destroyed."

[YEA]  07/30/2010: Lindsay from Chicago, Il, Usa writes: "I used to get strep throat often and would have to get a prescription or a shot of penicillin from my doctor. It reached a point one year where the strep throat kept coming back and I was tested for and diagnosed with it three times in two months. I read about gargling with apple cider vinegar diluted in a glass of warm water and decided to try it rather than go straight back to the doctor again when I got sick for the third time. It worked. Now whenever my throat starts to hurt at all, I pour about 1/4 cup of ACV (just the cheap stuff from the grocery store) into a 16 oz glass and fill it the rest of the way with hot water just cool enough drink. I gargle and spit it out until the entire glassful is gone. The throat pain is dulled after just one use, and after gargling twice a day for a few days, all symptoms are gone. I have been using this remedy for the last 12 years and haven't needed to go to the doctor for strep throat since."

04/25/2009: momof2innewmexico from Farmington, NM writes: "So my throat is KILLING me. I couldn't eat this morning until a DOUBLE dose of ibuprofen kicked in, that's how bad it hurt!! Looked in the mirror - classic case of strep throat. I read about other users doing either green tea or ACV and honey in hot water. I combined the two, made a cup of hot green tea, then added 3 tsp of ACV and 3 tsp of honey (I might have even added a few more tsp of honey, I like my tea sweet!) I am gargling a mouthful for as long as I can, then swallowing it. My pain level was seriously at a 9 or 10, I could hardly swallow, and after only 1/3 of this cup of tea, I can feel it working. Swallowing still hurts, but I'd say it's more like a level 7 or so. I'll post again once I know how this works in 24 hours, but I plan on gargling/drinking with this concoction at least 3 or 4 times tomorrow too!! I'm so amazed that it's already working!!"

[YEA]  11/09/2007: Joyce from Joelton, Tn writes: "ACV used half & half with honey makes a very good cough syrup which will also cure strep. When my 3 youngest children got chickenpox at the same time, the older and younger to the 3 were faring much better than the middle one who kept running a fever. The next morning he had classic scarlet fever rash in groin to explain why. Yep, ACV / honey mixture to the rescue - I gave all 3 a tsp. every two hours or so. Next morning the ones rash in groin was decreased, and the other 2 never got it. I kept them on it for a couple more days.

After hospitals discovered they were spreading pseudomonas aurugenosis (?) via the oxygen equipment, they removed this "hospital scourge infection" by soaking the equipment in 1 part vinegar - 7 parts water, so who knows what else it will cure."

[YEA]  06/01/2006: Leslie from Seattle writes: "I tried this a few weeks back when I felt a horrible sore throat coming. I knew it would soon turn into strep as I have had it before plenty of times and when I get it, I get it bad! So I was worried since my baby was only a few weeks old at the time and I did not want to take any medications since I breast feed exclusively and did not want to have to stop and give formula because of antibiotics. I have never given any of my children formula and never plan to, so I wanted to find a natural cure to avoid having to do that. I tried the ACV method, gargling a few teaspoons w/ water a few times a day and it worked! It taste horrible, but who cares when it's natural and so much better for you (and in this case, my baby too!) I told everyone I know and my husband a few weeks ago did the same thing and warded off a sore throat this way too. I'm hooked and so glad I tried it!"

I wanted to avoid taking any antibiotics for a number of reasons, so I happen to come across your website and saw your apple cider vinegar cures. I'm a believer in home remedies, and I didn't hesitate to try it. As soon as I started sipping on ACV, my throat started to burn, and I continued sipping it throughout the day. Come to find out that I had strep throat. I knew I had to take some kind of antibiotics to cure it so I decided to look up some home remedies and read some comments on ACV. After using ACV the first day, I noticed that all my symptoms were gone by the next day. My other concern was what the acid in ACV would do to my teeth so I decided to buy a small spray bottle (travel size) and fill it with half ACV and water. With the spray bottle, I was able to spray just the back of my throat and avoid it getting on my teeth. I still rinsed my mouth out just to be on the safe side."

Went to the pharmacy and paid another small fortune for 4 medications. I began the medicine and by the next day I was worse. last night I google homeopathic cures for strep and found this site. I read about ACV, I thought that maybe ya all were crazy but I had no other choice I felt as if my head was going to blow off and the throat was on fire. I went to the store bought Heinz ACV, paid for it and got in my car and gulped some down. I began to sneeze almost immediately. Then my throat felt as if it caught fire, and within 30 seconds I could actually swallow without having to prepare myself for the pain. my sinuses are 100 percent better, my strep is not gone yet but I think I will add the diluted ACV and water sipping it today and will update on my condition in the morning. I am also going to try ACV on my young son who has had GERD since birth."

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  11/30/2010: Mia from Lyons, Ny writes: "I don't take any man-made medicines unless it is absolutely unavoidable. For a couple of days I had been sick with the sniffles, sore sinuses, a little cough. So I took two 1,000 milligram doses of vitamin c and as a result I felt like I was getting better the next day, which was Thanksgiving. I was able to cook dinner for 20 without feeling bad one bit. I felt so good that I had forgotten to take any more Vitamin C. The day after Thanksgiving it appeared that forgetting to take the Vitamin C had caught up with me. I went from sniffles and sinus pressure to the worst sore throat I've had in twenty years. And I don't remember ever having painful glands on the side of my throat but I had them now. I couldn't stand the pain in my glands so I came straight to Earthclinic (whose advice has practically saved my life in the past) and looked for a cure.

I did the cayenne remedy. I gargled with 1/4 tsp. Cayenne is a 1/4 cup of water. My tongue was on fire but amazingly I could swallow and in less than 15 minutes the unbearable gland pain in my neck was bearable and I would watch a movie in peace. I had sore throat for a couple more days but I didn't take anymore cayenne because it wasn't unbearable.

But yesterday I woke up feeling achy and just plain awful. I wanted to just lay on the coach and make pitiful noises but instead I looked at my tonsils. They were red, and swollen, and covered with white polka dots. I was afraid that I was feeling so horrible because my tonsils were infected but I was determined that I wasn't going to be taking antibiotics so I came back to Earthclinic and decided to do a more thorough job with the cayenne and to do a nice shot of ACV. I did the ACV first in a glass of what. Then, I took 1500 mgs. Vitamin C. Then, I poured a glass of tomato juice and added 1/2 tsp of cayenne and 1/2 tsp of salt and sipped that all day. By evening the achy feeling was gone.

Today I woke up with a slightly sore throat and no achy feeling. When I checked my tonsils they were almost a normal pink color and had only a few white spots remaining. I am continuing the tomato cayenne remedy with 1,000 mgs of Vitamin C three times a day."

[YEA]  02/27/2009: Jennie from Ashville, AL writes: "I've had strep throat twice in the last year. I'm convinced the first time I got it from being exposed to it in the doctor's office. After a round of antibiotics, I went six months before the next strep attack. Once again, I went on antibiotics. When I felt strep coming on for the third time six months later, I did not want to go the antibiotic route yet again. I've never been an antibiotic fan, as I do not like to weaken my own immune system, and I also believe we are creating "super bugs" by killing off the weakest strains of infections with antibiotics, leaving only the strong to prey on us. After a day of agony (tight throat, swollen tonsils, difficulty swallowing), I started Googling and found Earth Clinic. I'd heard about cayenne pepper for other ailments, but I'd never tried it for sore throat (let alone strep). I figured it couldn't hurt to try, so I began gargling 1/8 tsp of cayenne powder in half a glass of warm water. The immediate effects astonished me. The pain was cut in half right away. I could swallow almost normally, and the tightness subsided. I continued to gargle every two hours until bedtime. At bedtime, I mixed 1/8 tsp cayenne into a shot glass of lemon juice and knocked it back. It was a bit hot and sour, but not enough to bother me. When I got up the next morning, my throat was a bit on the dry side, but the swelling had subsided significantly. I again gargled with warm water and 1/8 tsp of cayenne, drinking the last little sip so it would go down my throat. Felt GREAT. That day marked the turning point in my illness.

I then read about apple cider vinegar here and decided to try putting 3 tbsp in a glass of water to sip throughout the morning. While sour, the comfort it provided was amazing, so I continued throughout the day and into the next day. By the end of day three, I had only a faint scratchiness in the back of my throat. No more swelling, no more pain, no cough. It is now six days later, and, aside from slight sniffles, I am symptom-free. I am so thankful I found Earth Clinic and tried these remedies instead of going for another round of antibiotics. Obviously, medicine has its place, but I really think we've got to build our body's natural immune system to fight off the vast majority of viral and bacterial infections.

Thanks, Earth Clinic!"

I recommed the following: Drink 1 whole lemon fresh squeezed juice, some pure honey for sweetness, a few dashes of Apple Cider Vinegar (the taste was quite strong for me...so I didn't do a whole lot). A couple ounces of water, and a bunch of dashes of cayenne pepper (until the mix turned red). I took this as a shot!!! Bottoms up.. a couple times a day. In between those shots, I gargaled with cayenne pepper water mix (about 6 mouth fulls each time) again, water and cayenne unitl it turned good and red. In addition to that I sucked on Garlic gloves, raw garlic cloves. A couple of times a day. They weren't that bad. I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS SITE!!! [YEA]  09/24/2007: Evelyn from Missouri, USA writes: "I recently found out that a friend we had been at the park with came down with strep throat. She called me to make sure I was feeling alright. I had been feeling a sore throat, and within a few hours, it became very painful. I could not deal with strep! I have too much responsibility right now, and so I searched online for a natural cure. I found this site, and found it fascinating. I couldn't decide what to try.

I have used barley water in the past as well. Here is what I did- I made a drink using barley water, apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, garlic, some sea salt, lemon juice and some honey to help with the flavor. I drank a cup warm, and WOW did I feel the effect. My throat began to burn, but it was soothing. I drank the entire glass. Put the rest of the 'tea' in the fridge, and continued drinking a cup every so often through out the day. I felt no more sore throat later that day, and thought I was cured, so I stopped drinking it. For two days, I felt great. Then decided to eat some sweets (chocolate candies) and instantly my sore throat started up again. I felt like I had just added some kindling back to the fire. So I made more of the drink, gargled it and swallowed it. I did this through the night, and the next day, and totally cured it. I don't know if I had strep. I know it hurt, and my friend had it. So I was up for trying. My children all have it now, and I am trying to figure out which remedy they will be able to handle, as they are not very interested in the drink that I used. :) But it totally works!!!

I have bookmarked this site, and continue to come back to it often. I know this stuff works. As for making barley water, barley isn't always easy to find. I use whole pearled barley, found at a local amish store. you can probably use barley flakes found at the grocery store as well. I put a handful or two into a dry hot pan and shake it, so they don't stick to the pan. I do this over high/or med/high heat until they start browning in color. Not burnt, just light browned. I then turn off the heat, and pour water to fill the pan,and let it sit for a few minutes. You can gargle that and drink it, but I prefer adding everything else. I then added about 1/4 cup of ACV, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/8-1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, dash of sea salt, and then honey to taste. It is such a soothing drink. I didn't like it at first. I thought it was too strong, but I am growing to like the taste. Probably because it totally cured my sore throat. OH, I ALSO HAD AN EAR ACHE!!!! And this helped with the ear pain. It felt like it was helping to clear up the ear ache from the inside. It has been great! THANK YOU Earth Clinic, and thank you thank you thank you to all of you who have written in your suggestions. I am so glad I have found this site."

The only thing it does is remove a couple of immune system glands that are doing their job diligently and you don't want to kill off your soldiers working to prevent that infection from getting past them. They "pulled" my tonsils because they were swollen when I was 7 years old. I have had strep throat many times since. Two of my 4 children lost their tonsils in childhood, the other two till have theirs. It made absolutely no difference in the sore throats and ear infections, in the two without tonsils, just as it didn't stop the sore throats and ear infections for me. What did stop the sore throats and ear infections in all 4 of my children was learning to start them on benadryl when the elm trees bloomed in the spring and continue until the trees were all leafed out. The goldenrod blooming in the fall was my cue to restart the benadryl and continue until the first killing frost. This worked on the 2 without tonsils and the 2 with. So when you get a sore throat, just mix up some good old apple cider vinegar about half & half with raw local hooney and rest asured that it will kill the strep organism. Then you will never have to worry about an increased incidence of Hodgkins in the ones who had tonsillectomies, as I did after reading that little blurb in one of the medical journals."

[YEA]  04/04/2008: Mark from Berkeley, CA writes: "My sister turned me onto oil of bitter orange years ago to cure strep throat. At first I didn't believe her, especially when she told me that she got some agar and swabbed her throat and then swabbed the agar and had it tested positive for strep. She then used the oil of bitter orange 3x a day and for 3 days after all symptoms are gone and done. I tried this and it worked for me too. How to apply: Oil of bitter orange tastes very intense. Take a long handled q tip and dip into oil. Apply to inside of throat where it hurts. It will taste pretty bad but for the few who have done this 3 x a day and then for 3 more days after all symptoms are gone, Also, do not eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after applying so it can do it's work. it has worked beautifully. I have also used oil of oregano which I am told is even stronger to great results for a very sore throat."

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  04/30/2011: Shelby from Blue Springs, Missouri, United States writes: "Okay, so I've had strep throat for three days and haven't been dealing with just a sore throat- it's the whole deal: body aches, head aches, and a horrible fever. I'm on antibiotics, the maximum dosage that I can have, but the pain has been getting worse in my throat. I'm also an asthmatic, which, of course, does not help the situation in the slightest because it makes it very difficult for me to breathe.

I Googled home remedies for strep and this was the first website that came up. The most revered fix seemed to be the cayenne pepper (and that was the only thing I had in my cabinets that was on the list) so I went ahead and tried it. I just sprinkled some into a little bit of orange juice and drank it down. Since I cannot stand cayenne pepper, not because it's spicy but because I hate it, I followed the glass down with some milk, but I sipped it because I was afraid the cayenne wouldn't work properly if I didn't. I must say, it worked a lot better than I expected it to. Although I can still feel the swollen, tender lump in my throat, the pain was 95% gone after I had finished the drink and I can breathe a little easier now.

Hopefully, this response will work for somebody else, the way it worked for me."

[YEA]  11/28/2010: Bill from Philadelphia, Penna writes: "I've been reading many of the comments on using cayenne pepper for a sore throat and also for strep. I figured by now we all know it works so there was no reason for me to add my two cents. But so many people seem to have a hard time with it. Even the ones who have no problem at all are making it much more difficult than it has to be. When I feel one coming on all I do is take a Q-tip and wet it. Then dip it in the cayenne and dab it on your throat where you feel the pain. If you need more turn it around or get a new one and keep going until you cover as much as you need to. I was surprised that you don't even taste it and no burning at all.

A few weeks back my throat started killing me. I never even looked at it all day. The next morning I woke up in great pain. I looked in the mirror and there it was. A big white spot on the back of my throat about the size of a jelly bean. I dabbed a little cayenne on it and never even thought about it again. About two days later I remembered it and thought "That's weird. I wonder what happened to my Strep" I looked in the mirror and couldn't see anything. Gone.

The Q-tip works fine but what I've been doing is using a camel hair brush. It's a number 6. They're actually meant for painting models(cars, planes etc. )It works better because it has a much longer handle and you can see better because you're not stuffing all your fingers and half your hand into your mouth. Just rinse it well and then rinse it in some rubbing alcohol or peroxide so you don't keep recontaminating yourself. Also dump a little of the cayenne out into a cup or on a plate or something and then when your done rinse it down the drain. Never dip right into your cayenne container. Anyway hope this helps those who don't/can't gargle the cayenne. I know it's not pleasant, I've tried. This is much easier plus the cayenne is EXTREMELY concentrated and not literally watered down."

I went to the doctor today and have the antibiotics just in case, since this is my first time trying a home-remedy for strep throat, but I am hoping to not have to start taking the prescription. After reading numerous posts on strep throat, I decided to take everyone's advice and tweak it to what I hope will work for me.

What I did was take about a teaspoon of raw, organic honey and mixed into it about 1/2 teaspoon of organic cayenne pepper. It made a thick, sticky reddish paste. I then (using a small flashlight to aid in seeing back into my throat) used a cotton swab to dip into the paste and then brush it onto my tonsils and uvula. (the uvula is the dangly thing hanging in the center of the back of your mouth and the tonsils are on the sides). I am keeping it in a tiny tupperware container to use until my strep throat (hopefully) goes away.

I was gargling with a warm-water and cayenne mixture, but that was burning my tongue so much that I thought this might be better; plus I'm applying it directly to the problem so, I think it is a better idea. I love that it doesn't burn at all when I apply it directly to my tonsils!

I will post an update later on! :)"
