Natural Remedies to Cure or Treat Hypothyroidism

"Hypothyroidism is the disease state in humans and animals caused by insufficient production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Cretinism is a form of hypothyroidism found in infants.

There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism. Historically, and still in many developing countries, iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide. In present day developed countries, however, hypothyroidism is mostly caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or by a lack of the thyroid gland or a deficiency of hormones from either the hypothalamus or the pituitary.

Hypothyroidism can result from postpartum thyroiditis, a condition that affects about 5% of all women within a year after giving birth. The first phase is typically hyperthyroidism. Then, the thyroid either returns to normal or a woman develops hypothyroidism. Of those women who experience hypothyroidism associated with postpartum thyroiditis, one in five will develop permanent hypothyroidism requiring life-long treatment." (Wikipedia)

I'm taking 2 tsp along with 1 tsp pure natural honey mixed in apx 2 ounces of water, 3x a day ( before each meal.) Apx 2 years ago I developed a white mole directly under my eye, hated it and always planned on finding out about getting it removed. On day 4 of taking the ACV, I had gotten out of the pool and was rubbing my eye and noticed I couldn't feel the mole. I went to the mirror to look and could barely see it. Today is day 6 and it's almost gone! I have another dark mole on my arm that is also changing!

Another HUGE change this week are my bowel movements. I am hypothyroid, and normally when I'm eating healthy items such as alot of fruits and veggies, I tend to have a hard time producing a movement, but this week I have been producing at least once, sometimes twice a day, and they are very large healthy movements. I have also lost 4+ lbs which of course I also attribute to eatting better and drinking alot of water. I tend to go on these health kicks alot, for long periods of time, but this is my first time trying the ACV and I have been telling everyone about my dissapearing mole and my movements for 2 days now. I cant wait to wake up each day and see what else is going to change! Loving it, and I will keep you updated! Thanks, Mom in Phila"

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED
1 WARNING!

05/10/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands writes: "I started taking EVCO since Friday night. I took 1 tbsp on Friday night and yeserday I took 2 tbsp - 1 an hour before lunch and the 2nd immeidately before dinner. After dinner I had loose bowel movements and went 3 times before I went to sleep and this morning too I had loose bowel movement. Was it wrong to take EVCO just before dinner? When is the right time to take it. I am feeling a bit better with my brain fog caused by hypothyroid, but its not completely gone yet, because its only been 2 days. I am taking 2 tbsp because I want to get rid of the brain fog asap and then I will go back to 1 tbsp as I am still on medication.

Also I was thinking of starting back on ACV (for my food allergies) once my hypothyroid is under control. I plan to take it only on weekends, this time for sure at least 4 hours after I have taken my thyroid medication. I also intend to continue 1 tbsp coconut oil for my hypothyroid. I will be sipping ACV throughout the day, so is it ok to take coconut oil while on ACV? Is there any particular time I should take coconut oil while on ACV during the weekends? I don't want to get my body into any kind of trouble by consuming both at wrong times.

I also read that coconut oil acts as antihistamine. Could that help me with my food allergies so I wont need to take ACV? All this when I am already allergic to coconut, but I have to do what I have to do to deal with my hypothyroid."

05/11/2009: Susan from Tucson, Az replies: "if you are still feeling brain foggy and not all your hypo symptoms have resolved on your current meds, try getting your practitioner to prescribe 2% of your thyroid meds (synthroid, etc.) as cytomel, or as armour natural. for a 100mcg synthetic thyroid dose, you would need to add 1 grain of armour, or 2 mcg of cytomel in a slow release formulation from a compounding pharmacy. i think you will find the brain fog clearing up and you will feel so much better. it's good for your libido too, which will allow you to concentrate on other areas of your relationship. good luck, and stay with this, as the complications from letting it go are just too profound, and not many doctors take this condition all that seriously."

05/11/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "Thanks for your suggestion, Susan.

The medication you mention, 2% Cytomel or 1 grain of Armour - are they available in regular pharmacies? I am in the Cayman Islands and not sure if we have compounding pharmacy here."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  02/13/2009: Cathy from Villa Park, Illinois USA writes: "I have been using Extra Virgin Coconut Oil since April of 2008. One tablespoon per day. I have Hypothyroidism and was having a lot of problems with brain fog. I was having difficulty doing my job and sometimes would forget where I was going when driving home for a few seconds. I am a creative person but was totally unable to express my ideas in artwork or my writing. I could not organize my thoughts. I could not make decisions or remember what I was supposed to do. This on top of all the other symptoms of hypothyroidism. 2 weeks after I started taking it the brain fog totally went away. I am very dependent on the coconut oil now as I do not want to go back to not knowing what I was doing. As for my other symptoms such as totally lost my sex drive which is destroying my relationship and sleeping too much and low energy etc. it has not changed any of that. My thyroid has gotten worse and I have had to double my thyroid medication (Thyroxine). I am working with a Naturalpathic doctor which was a very wise thing to do. She told me to keep taking 1 Tbsp of coconut oil per day. I just wonder if I should take more than that since I have heard of other people have been able to go off the thyroid meds when taking 2 Tbsp per day. She is also treating me for Adrenal Fatigue and cervical dysplaisia and fibrocystic breasts. I guess I'm a mess right now and just want to be well again. I am a big fan of the coconut oil because it is the one remedy that has made the most difference for me. Also I want to add that the doc specified I should use the solid coconut oil instead of the capsules which I started out on because she said that way you can tell if it has gone rancid. But I still use the capsules for backcountry trips and road trips for convenience.

If anyone knows a way to bring back the sex drive I would be grateful."

02/13/2009: Jake from Chicago, IL replies: "To Cathy from Villa Park. I think you should definitely increase the coconut oil but also look into iodine - as in iodoral. Take a look at this site: http://www.lewrockwell.com/miller/miller20.html Best of luck."

03/27/2009: DrJ from Bombay, India replies: "Regarding comments above, i would be wary of Iodoral. Iodoral is Lugol's in tablet form! Lugols is a mixture of Elemental Iodine (Toxic internally) and Potassium Iodide (safe form internally). For best results go for "Saturated Solution of Potassium Iodide" (SSKI), you just need 5 drops in water twice daily for 2-3 weeks. On Coconut Oil, make sure your Coconut oil is "Coldpressed" if it doesnt say it, then its not going to work for you medically!!! Most Hypothyroid is not Iodine deficiency, the reason why Coconut oil and Iodine assist thyroid function is they are both antifungal/bacterial, this is why Lugols Iodine works well for bladder infections amoung other infections!!! Fungals and other bacteria cause poor circulation and immune function in the throat area decreasing the glands function resulting in hypothroid or autoimmune hypothyroid. My understanding that SSKI in small dosages stimulate thyroid while mega doses reduce "thyroid storm". Poor hygein in the form of unclean diet combined with mercury from teeth amalgums etc cause hypothyroid and Chronic Fatigue. Acupressure on hand/foot thyroid & Adrenals reflex points (which work with the thyroid)can also help wonders! If you feel your body is lacking Iodine then supplement with green algae's & Kelp supplements and unrefined sea salt which is rich in natures Iodine."

04/07/2009: Barb from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada replies: "Hi Cathy,

I also have hypothyroidism (which I believe came on after the birth of my second child. - postpartum hypothyroidism) Anyway, after a few years of being on synthroid I just felt terrible. Like you I felt the "brain fog", I experienced depression, loss of hair, fatigue, cold hands and feet, etc... I had no "zest" for life for lack of a better term so I went to see a naturapath. She said that I have to start taking desiccated thyroid (Armour in the states). After about 3 appointments with my endocrinologist I finally convinced him to put me on it. (He did not want to have anything to do with it) I felt a HUGE difference in the way I felt (also with my libido). However, due to the ignorance of my doctor with this medication I stupidly agreed to go back on synthroid. Becasue he didn't know how to control my t4 t3 levels with natural thyroid he was basically saying he couldn't continue with it. Now that I've been on the synthetic medication I have never slept so much in my life, no sex drive, no "zest" for life, depression worsened (already on meds for depression for about 6 years now).

The BEST thing you can do for yourself is get on Armour. It is so hard to get doctors in Canada to prescribe this medication because no one is willing to learn about it. It has been used to treat thyroid issues since the 1800's. My doctor (like so many others out there) says "It's not reliable. The amount of T3 and T4 in it are not regular even amounts". Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Believe it or not, they have improved on this drug since the 1800's. It seems to be much more available in the states. I've been trying to order it over the internet. It's a shame naturapaths can't write rx's. I may have to travel 5 hours to Toronto, Ontario to see a doctor that will prescribe desiccated thyroid for me.

Please try this medication. If you don't see any changes after a reasonable amount of time (3 months) you can always go back on the synthetic hormone. If you decide to try it - please email me and let me know how you did! Thanks for listening,

Barb"

05/06/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "Hi Cathy

I am so glad I stumbled upon your post. I am a regular visitor at EC since last 5 months. I have hypothyroid, but somehow I didn't get to check on that page on the website until now. As suggested on this website, I was taking ACV for my kidney stone and food allergies and it worked great on both. But I stopped taking ACV 3 weeks ago as I was noticing other symptoms, which I didn't know what to call, until I read your post...now I know what to call them...brain fog. I have bypothyroid for the last 14 years and have been on Eltroxin (100mcg for most of the time) but never had this symptom of brain fog in the last 14 years. My thryoid was totally regulated with Eltroxin (though my skin has become dry and my hair falls) that I had almost forgotten about this condition and so I didn't check if taking ACV would have any side effect on my hypothyroid. I guess it did and my thyroid seems to have gone bad due to which I have the brain fog and just like you I have had problems in the office in the last 3 weeks, which I have never had in 23 years of my career. My doctor has done blood tests for thyroid yesterday and the results are expected by Monday. I don't mind increasing the dosage of Eltroxin if that could rid me of the brain fog and change me back to the person I have always been.

As regards the Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, did you increase the quantity? Did it help or did it cause any heart palcipitation like others have complained of? If it did, did you reduced your medicine? Did it feel better then?

I am a bit scared to use the coconut oil without asking the doctor because I started the ACV without consulting my doctor and while it helped me with what I took it for, it seems to have had a side effect on my thyroid.

I would appreciate if you could respond re your coconut oil intake. Thanks."

05/07/2009: Marlene from Surrey, BC Canada replies: "I am also hypothyroid and am taking Synthyroid. I was going to take ACV because it seems useful for so many things. Then read the information about Synthyroid; you cannot take iron or antacids within four hours of taking Synthyriod, they will affect the absorbtion of the medication. I think maybe ACV is like an antacid and affect the absorbtion of your medication. I now will have ACV but always at least four hours after my Synthyroid."

05/07/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "Hi Marlene

Thank you so much for sharing the inforamation. That may be it. I used to take ACV within 2 hours of taking Eltroxin, so maybe Eltroxin didn't have enough time to get absorbed. I too take iron tablets which I take around 7 hours after taking Eltroxin.

I take my Eltroxin in the morning, about half or one hour before my breakfast. Are you aware if that is when thyroid medicines should be taken?

Sangeetha"

05/07/2009: Marlene from Surrey, BC, Canada replies: "Sangeetha, My medication says to take on an empty stomache 1 hour before meals or 3 hours after meals. I get up early and take it at least 1 hour before breakfast. It also says to take with lots of water. I take Iron, which I then take at lunch time. I also take coconut oil, molasses and kelp as they are supose to help the thyriod. I have also just started to take nutritional yeast. I keep telling my doctor that I am going to get off the Synthyroid!"

05/08/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "Hi Marlene

Thanks for responding.

my thyroid results will not be out at least until Monday (or may be later). Meanwhile, I am considering taking EVCO, but I don't want to take too much or take at the wrong time and have heart palpitations r any other problem.

Could I ask you how much EVCO you take and when? Is it ok to take it with breakfast (which will only be around an hour after taking my Eltroxin)? You mention you take Synthyroid so I guess you wouln't be consuming a lot of ECVO either. I want to get rid of this brain fog that has developed since the last 4 weeks and am willing to try the natural remedy to get rid of it. Once my brain fog is cleared and hopefully my thyroid medication dosage altered, I wouldn't mind coming off it.

I would also consult with my doctor re prolonged use of 3 tbsp of EVCO daily and to reduce my thryoid medication if need be, in which case I guess I will have to get blood tests done every 2 weeks in the beginning.

Does anyone else have anything to add on the usage of EVCO with while on Eltroxin.

Thanks."

05/10/2009: Marlene from Surrey, BC, Canada replies: "Hi Sangeetha,

I take coconut oil in the morning with my tea at breakfast. I take approximately 1 tablespoon, it's hard to be exact because the coconut oil is solid most of the year as it isn't warm enough here, so I likely take a bit over the 1 tablespoon. I was taking more but it started to bother my stomache. It might have helped to spread the coconut oil through the day (maybe a tablespoon at breakfast, lunch and dinner) but I don't like the taste or texture, so would try to get it over with.

Also it seems by reading other post, that you should work your way up a tablespoon at a time.

I have not had any side effects except the upset stomache.

I think the last time I had my blood tested, I was taking the ACV in the morning, to close to the Synthyroid, affecting the absorbtion and the doctor uped my medication. I was not to happy.

I have noticed my temperature has gone up in the last month or so. I hope this means things are getting better."

05/10/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "Hi Marlene

Thanks for responding. Yesterday I took the 2nd tbsp before dinner and had a upset stomach till the morning. I wil try 1 tsp now before dinner.

I live in a hot place so the EVCO I bought was completely melted when I took it out of the shelf the 2rd day to drink. It looks beautifully clear and for me it tastes delicious.

ACV close to Eltroxin seems to have done the same to my hypothyroid. I would have the results out tomorrow and will probably be on increased dosage of Eltroxin. Are you still on increase dosage of Synthyroid? I mean even after you started EVCO?

I have had hypothyroid for 14 years but never felt this bad. I hope to be back to my normal self soon.

Deidre, ACV is wonderful, but may be you should post a warning for people with thyroid (and may be other conditions) to give a gap of at least 4 hours between taking thyroid medication and ACV, because otherwise ACV seems to interfere with the absorption of thyroid medicine and the results are not what we would like to see. This might also be true for iron supplements.

Regards
Sangeetha"

EC: Thanks for the great suggestion! I copied part of your post and put it on the apple cider vinegar page under Warnings and Caveats.

06/03/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "I found out the cause of my brain fog. No, it wasn't my hypothyroid, nor my anemia. And ACV seems to have been totally innocent. IT WAS CANOLA OIL.

I have been very sensitive to not-so-good quality of oil from my childhood. As we couldn't find the regular vegetable oil I use at the supermarket around beginning of April, I bought Canola oil. As the container was leaking, I transferred it to the vegetable oil container I had at home which was empty and forgot all about canola oil. Shortly after I had started using it, I had trouble with my memory and concentration, but I had forgotten all about my sensitivity to oils and about canola oil as it was coming out from the vegetable oil container. Just 5 days ago I remembered my sensitivity and researched about canola oil on the internet and found others who have had similar problems. It was also mentioned that it effects the central nervous system and could cause blindness in the long run. I stopped using it right away and started feeling better the next day itself.

I am glad I am sensitive to not-so-good oils as I feel the effects immediately. My family members who are not sensitive, would have seen worse effects after a few years if we continued to use it.

While I was reading about oils, I also found that the vegetable oil (the container of which has pictures of vegetables on the front) is actually a soy bean oil. I never read the ingredients as the name says vegetable oil and it has has pictures of vegetables. I found that soy bean oil is not at all good for thyroid and generally.

I have been using olive oil for normal cooking and vegetable oil for deep frying (sometimes) since. But since the vegetable oil isn't good and olive oil is not suitable for deep frying - it leaves the question...which is the best oil to use?

I would appreciate input from others as to which oil to use - which will not be hard on thyroid and which will also not cause brain fog or any other health issues.

Sangeetha"

06/03/2009: Madhur from Brisbane, Australia replies: "Sangeetha --You can try Grapeseed Oil for cooking, it is very good. Also, there are light olive oils available that are more conducive to cooking (frying) than the thicker EVOO, which has a lower burning temp. Hope this helps.

Madhur"

06/04/2009: Sandhya from Bangalore, India replies: "Mustard oil and Coconut oil for deep frying or otherwise. Both are very good oils. Sesame oil is also an excellent oil for consumption--dont know if you can deep fry with sesame oil. Search on the net for health benefits of these oils, and you will get good info. Mustard oil should always be heated for consumption, as is traditionally used in North India."

06/07/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hi Cathy,

For a sluggish thyroid, you need kelp or another source of iodine, and you also need a good stress tab (B complex with added vitamins C & E) meal times and bedtime. Yes, the container says once a day, but take l tab 4 times a day.

If the vitamin E in the stress tab doesn't add up to at least 800mgm. per day, also get some vitamin E which is recommended for fibrocystic breasts, a total of l200 mgm. daily won't cause any problems and has a lot to do with the sexual functions of the body."

[YEA]  04/13/2008: Gail from North Bend, WA writes: "VIRGIN COCONUT OIL FOR HYPOTHYROID AND ADRENAL EXHAUSTION SYMPTOMS. I have been experiencing hypothyroid symtoms as well as adrenal exhaustion symptoms for 6 months. My Medical Doctor did blood and urine tests as well as an MRI because I was experiencing headaches, low body temperature, extreme fatigue, earaches, muscle and joint pain. All tests came back normal. Liver function normal, thyroid normal, B12 normal, iron normal. Naturopath did allergy testing, autoimmune and thyroid tests. Thyroid TSH, T3 and T4 all were in optimal ranges. No allergies to foods. Negative to autoimmune test. I began on my own taking nutritional support for my Adrenals. I purchased a book and took all the recommended supplements for Severe Adrenal Fatigue. My morning temperatures were consistently in the lower 97 degree F. I ate well, eliminating junk food and sugary foods. My morning temperature dropped into the 96 degree F range. In desperation, I began taking Virgin Coconut oil, starting with 2 teaspoons on day 1, then 3 teaspoons on day 2. 3 Tablespoons on day 3. After 4 days of VCO 3 tablespoons a day I was able to do light exercise. Before that I was barely able to make it through a day. My legs felt like lead. I worked 4 days a week at a sitdown job and would be in bed for 3 days. After 9 days of 3 tablespoons of Virgin Coconut Oil a day I had nerve zapping in my right leg and right shoulder at night. Since that time I have had no nerve zaps and the pain in my left shoulder due to Adrenal Fatigue is 98% better. I have been able to exercise vigorously. If I reduce to 1 tablespoons a day my body aches. At 3 tablespoons a day I have energy and have no body aches. My morning temperatures have gone up a degree, 97-98 F. It has not helped with my weight although I know a few people who used it and lost weight immediately. It has stopped my hair loss (it use to fall out by the handful) and in fact not only is my hair thicker but my eyebrows are growing back. I no longer have cold hands and feet either. It doesn't cure thyroid problems but it certainly is a great supplement to help with the effects of the disease."

Last week I started the EVCO and added the ACV, of course, decided to throw in the molasses. I will keep you all posted on my progress, trying to feel better and lose the 40 pounds I have picked up. Today I write because I have come up with a great drink. It kills two birds with one stone. Here goes:

ONE LARGE MUG
2 BAGS OF LIPTON CARMEL TRUFFLE TEA
ONE TBSP EVCO [Extra Virgin Coconut Oil]
ONE TBPS BLACK STRAP MOLASSES
ONE HALF TO ONE TBSP HONEY

POUR BOILING WATER OVER THE INGREDIENTS IN MUG AND STIR GENTLY WHILE STEEPING TO MELT THE COCONUT OIL.

I could not stand the taste of the molasses, however it is so yummy in this tea. Hope you like it. I have noticed since the evco and acv that like most everyone else, my ENERGY has soared, skin soft, body temp up, hair and nails gowing, dry seriously cracking heels softer and healing (using oil dirrectly) no more claritin, sleeping better, brighter outlook. This is only my seventh day. At first I seemed to gain a little weight, but just today I noticed the scale is down 1 pound. I am keeping at it and will keep you posted."

I just found this wonderful site this week, which I intend to frequent OFTEN, and I thought I'd contribute my experience with coconut oil. So far (2 weeks) I have a bit more energy. I have gained about 8 pounds since January (I tend to be slim), which I want to lose. I hope the energy helps the weight loss. I'll keep you posted."

COCONUT OIL, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

1 QUESTION

09/27/2009: Jab from San Antonio, Tx, USA writes: "hypothyroidism...

Question:

Been trying ACV [apple cider vinegar] and VCO [virgin coconut oil] for my hypothyroidism of 18 years. Am feeling some changes, but am concerned about taking the VCO 3 times a day. A tablespoon has 120 calories and sometimes I take it warmed in rice milk-a cup would have 9 calories. That's 210 calories. At the minimum 3-4 tablespoons a day I'd be taking 360-480 in in calories of VCO. With the rice milk even more. I'm 59 and that would take up at least a third of my daily calories to maintain my weight. Gonna make my range of food intake extremely limited, I'm afraid.

After the ACV and VCO reduce the need for meds, do you need to maintain the same dosage of ACV and VCO to stay hypothyroidism free?"

09/29/2009: Bunny from Santa Ana, Ca replies: "Most weight loss experts these days don't recommend calorie counting because all calories are not created equal. A glass of vegetable juice might have more calories than a '0 calorie' diet drink, but the juice is full of vitamins, minerals and other great things, while the diet drink is junk in a bottle.

VCO is a good example of this. It's crammed with medium chain triglycerides (about 60%). MCTs aren't stored as fat. They are converted to ketones that your cells can burn instead of sugar. MCT's are being researched as a treatment for Alzheimer's for this reason.

For hypothyroidism iodine is the thing-along with removing things that inhibit thyroid function from your diet. Fluoride, chlorine and bromines are big culprits. Soy and raw cruciferous veges like broccoli and cauliflower can also cause problems. Check the iodine section here for instructions on how to do an iodine patch test and see if supplementing helps."

[QUESTION]  05/18/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands writes: "I am considering re-starting ACV for my food allergies and would also like to start 1 tbsp EVCO for my hypothyroid. Is it ok to take both these side by side or could/would there be any side effects?

Thanks for responding."

05/19/2009: Tim from La, CA replies: "Hi, I am no expert, but cocnut oil is very healthy and can be used with any food etc. But if you are conserned don't take them at the same time. Coconut oil is just like any other oil like Olive oil etc, but healthier, so it can be used with evrything and also you may want to consider taking a few tabel spoons of it every day with salads, on bread or alone, also you can use it for cooking."

05/19/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "Does ACV act like an antacid to reduce the stomach acid and make our bodies more alkaline? If so, could ACV reduce absorption of Vitamin B12 as mentioned below for antacids:

"The use of antacids will also lower your stomach acid secretion and decrease your ability to absorb vitamin B12.

Stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) is a crucial ingredient in your body's ability to absorb B12. If you're taking a medication specifically designed to reduce the amount of stomach acid you produce, your body's ability to use vitamin B12 from the food you eat or the supplements you take will be significantly compromised."

As Vitamin B12 is very important for our complete well-being, I would appreciate response to this query."

HYPOTHYROID SYMPTOMS

1 QUESTION

[QUESTION]  10/19/2009: Loren from Queens, Ny writes: "Hi everyone:

Does anyone know what causes the puffiness on face/hands etc in hypothyroid patients? Since my diagnosis recently, i have noticed that my hands especially are really puffy. Its really kinda scary. Thanks everyone for an early reply."

10/20/2009: Sharik from Arcata, Ca replies: "Hi, Loren.

The thyroid is an integral part of your endocrine system which includes the pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroids, thymus, adrenal, pancreas, and ovaries. When one goes, they all act up. It takes a while for the synthetic hormone to work as you must find the level your body needs. Meanwhile, keep your DR. posted as to symptoms, for as you can see, this is not something to ignore. But don't be frightened about the hands. It's uncomfortable and unsightly, but it will pass as your body starts to use the synthetic hormone. I suggested the time-honored ACV in apple juice to balance the pH in your body until the pills kick in. This can take anywhere from two to six weeks. The reason I know all this: I have Hashimoto's disease (it runs in the family) so I've been through it all.

Good luck to you, but remember to keep your MD posted as to your progress.
Namaste, Shar"

10/21/2009: Loren from Queens, Ny replies: "This message is for Sharik from California: Thank you very much for yr response. I will definitely let my doc know of this when I see her. I do have a question though - I had read somewhere on earth clinic that acv depletes the body of iodine. I was using it but when I read this, I stopped immediately. Have you ever heard of this? If so, any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks again for yr response."

10/22/2009: Katie from Edison, Nj replies: "From what I've read apple cider vinegar will boost whatever you take with it. Please do some research before you start taking iodine. As to how long to take it and how much. If you take it too long your thyroid counts will rocket. I should know mine went so high they stopped testing it. But I swear by apple cider and iodine. People are clueless when it comes to thyroid and how important iodine is to it. I had severe allergies, don't know if it was the ACV or iodine or combination of both but I am cured! My allergies are non-existant."

10/22/2009: Bessie from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Loren - I'm not Sharik but I did read the following about apple cider vinegar and iodine. On a Lugol's iodine bottle featured on the Web, they actually advise you to take one drop of Lugol's in a glass of water with 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar added to enhance the uptake of iodine. So it seems that taking apple cider vinegar when you have thyroid issues would be beneficial. Good luck!"

10/22/2009: Loren from Queens, Ny replies: "Thanks a lot Bessie for your feedback. I really do appreciate it."

10/23/2009: Sharik from Arcata, California replies: "To Loren from Queens:

I have never had that problem, but then I eat iodized salt as well as kelp, so I do get plenty of iodine. Since it's measured in mcg.s (micrograms) it doesn't take much. I drink ACV almost every day for pain (arthritis and Rheumatism) and haven't noticed any problem in 33 years of dealing with hypothyroidism but then we aren't cut out with cookie cutters, and not all people are the same. The person to ask is your pharmacist. I cultivate mine like a garden as he knows all sorts of marvelous stuff that my Dr. never heard of!

Having done a little research, I found this:

"Some foods block the uptake of iodine into the thyroid gland when eaten raw in large amounts. These include Brussels spouts (raw?!?!), cabbage, cauliflower, kale, peaches, pears, spinach, and turnips. If you have an underactive thyroid, you should limit your consumption of these foods." 'Prescription for Nutritional Healing' by Phyllis a Balch, CNC

I did not know this! And I do love my salads and slaws (I grow my own organic stuff). Learn something every day.....

Peace, sharik"

10/25/2009: Loren from Queens, Ny replies: "To Janice from Mi: Thank you so much for yr response. I really do appreciate it. I do have one question though - what brand of Kelp do you use? I purchased one a few days ago but refrained from using it because it says on the bottle that there are some sonstituents in the kelp that contains carcinogens. Well when I checked the meaning of carcinogen I figured I better off not using it. Any feedback will be appreciated."

10/25/2009: Sharik from Arcata, California replies: "Kelp is seaweed. I always buy organic (expensive, true) but pure. You may have gotten hold of supplies from countries not always trustworthy in their manufacturing techniques. I buy the powdered form, use it in soups and stews, or if I need a real clean-out, I make my own capsules using 0 or 00 veggie capsules I buy from my herbal store or online. I also have a friend who has a resale license (wholesale) and occasionally I'll help her fill out a minimum order. I use a lot of herbs and spices for health and buying wholesale saves me a lot of money. Do you have an herb store or health food store in your area? They would be the best place to find the pure stuff.

Peace, Sharik"

10/25/2009: Janice from Coloma, Mi replies: "Loren, we are not allowed to mention name brands. I have taken several different brands. Just try to find a plain Kelp. There are quite a few out there. The one I'm taking has 150 mcg of Natural Iodine from Kelp. I usually take two a day. One after breakfast and one with either lunch or dinner. On the bottle, it just says Kelp. Another thing I have done is mix my pepper shaker with pepper and kelp powder. That way when I put pepper on my food, I'm getting some extra Kelp. I hope that helps."

IODINE

1 QUESTION

[QUESTION]  10/24/2009: Loren from Queens, Ny writes: "Hi EC: I am hoping someone can help me out here. I recently read several articles strongly cautioning anyone who is hypothyroid with elevated antibodies to stay away from iodine. I am very nervous now cause i fall in that category and i am currently on lugols (4drops) daily. Would anyone know if this is true or not ? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ec for always being there for us. God bless!!!!"

10/24/2009: Janice from Coloma, Mi replies: "Loren, I talked to a Pharmacist who is into natural healing when he did a talk on thyroid last week. He said Lugols was o.k. but too much iodine can actually shut the thyroid down and he preferred to see people take Kelp, Dulse or some other source of iodine from food sources. He told me 1 drop of Lugols a day. I happened to have taken two that day and I got really flushed. The Lugols is the only thing I can think of that would do that to me."

10/26/2009: Loren from Queens, Ny replies: "Thank you Janice/Sharik for all yr help. Will follow yr advice and see what would be the outcome. Thanks again Ec. You guys are the best!!!!!"

[YEA]  07/23/2009: Kaylin from Hampton, IL writes: "Iodine is curing my hypothyroidism! I have been hypothyroid for 11 years, ever since I was 19. My doctor says I most likely have Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis, although it's never been confirmed by a test. I have been taking 60 mg. of Armour Thyroid 2 1/2 times per day. My dose has increased with each of my 3 pregnancies but I never felt any better and I still had a long list of symptoms. About a year ago I completely eliminated sugar and grains from my diet and lost 37 pounds, which eliminated a lot of my symptoms but I still had fatigue, hair loss, irregular cycles, and a lot more symptoms.

Two and a half months ago I read "_______" by ___________. I was convinced that I was Iodine deficient so I asked my doctor if I could start supplementing. He gave me permission but told me to go slowly and follow the book. I took Iodoral, the pill form of Lugol's solution. I started with half a pill the first day and I started my period one hour later (my first since breastfeeding my daughter, about 14 months after her birth). It was like my body was just waiting for iodine! My cycles have been 29-33 days since then, much more regular than they have ever been in my life (I didn't even start until I was 15).

Last week I had an annual physical and my blood tested and my midwife called and told me that my TSH is low and my T3 is high, so I'm in a hypERthyroid state! Tonight at church about 4 people asked if I'd lost more weight. The scale says no, but my dad says my face looks a lot thinner. A puffy face (which I've had half my life) is a very common sign of hypothyroidism. My midwife told me to cut my Armour Thyroid dose in half and have another test in a month. I'll update with results. I finally have hope of getting off of medication!"

07/23/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands replies: "Can you please let me know the name of the book Kaylin from Hampton, IL had mentioned in her post for hypothyroidsm? I have been hypothyroid for the last 14 years and after going through your website I am certain I can get free of it too. I have been taking 2 tbsp coconut oil and will start on 3 tbsp shortly. However, it is interesting to know that iodine could also cure hypothyroidism (for those who have iodine deficiency and I would like to know how to find that out).

Thanks.

Sangeetha"

LUGOL'S IODINE

1 QUESTION

[QUESTION]  05/15/2009: Sloveall from Nashville, TN writes: "Should you take Lugol's Iodine if you are taking Synthroid?

A chiropractor noticed I was getting a "dowager's hump" and said it was because of my hypothyroidism. I have been taking .125 synthroid for 24 years. He suggested I take Lugol's Iodine. I have been taking it but it has been making me dizzy and weak, or something is making me dizzy and weak. Anyone have any experience with Lugol's Iodine and thyroid medication?"

05/16/2009: T from Maryland, USA replies: "Although I have thyroid disease, I can't speak on the iodine as I am still researching many things. But I wanted to remark on the dowager's hump - this means osteoporosis and that should be attended to ASAP. Have you had a bone scan? It would be a good idea to find out just what level this is at.

A lot of people think that popping some calcium tablets will be the fix, but this is not true. Building and maintaining bone is far more complex than that, and calcium alone will not do it. On the dietary front, chia seeds are a "super food" that are easy to incorporate into the diet (eat plain, sprinkle on salads or cereals, add to soups, baked goods, etc.). Among other beneficial things, like omega-3's and 6's, chia seeds contain a good amount of calcium plus an often-overlooked trace mineral which is important for bone health - boron. They are also a good source of phosphorus and manganese. You also would want to ensure adequate intake of vitamins D3 and K - I take these together in a tiny sublingual "dot". Another factor will be magnesium. I take a calcium magnesium citrate liquid; again it's very easy to take. These should of course be in addition to a good diet and multivitamin. Do some research on these vitamins and minerals, and bone health in general, and see what you think.

Just found these links to start you off, which from a quick skim seem to have good info:

http://www.project-aware.org/Health/Osteo/osteo-bonehealth.shtml
http://www.project-aware.org/Health/Osteo/osteo-bonehealth2.shtml

Good luck, and please keep us updated!"

05/16/2009: Sloveall from Nashville, TN replies: "Thanks for your concern. I think I'm OK on the osteo thing - my last bone scan showed me at, I think this is right, 117. They told me that was way over the normal number, which I think is around 100, for good strong bones - so no bone loss yet. The chiropractor doctor told me that I would get rid of the hump with 6 drops of Lugol's (15%) 3 times a day. And something is making me really dizzy, so I was hoping to find out more info from others who might have taken Lugol's along with their synthroid medication. Thanks so much for you help!!!"

05/19/2009: Sloveall from Nashville, TN replies: "Should you take Lugol's Iodine AND your Synthroid medication for hypothyroidism?

I was told that a 15% solution of Lugol's Iodine, 6 drops a day, three times a day for about three months, would cure hypothyroidism. Has anyone else heard about this? And is it safe to take your doctor prescribed thyroid meds while taking Lugol's Iodine? I've been taking .l25 for about 24 years."

MULTIPLE REMEDIES

08/09/2009: Margaret from Cloverdale, Ca writes: "For anyone having trouble finding Armour (as one person in Canada mentioned), there is another product that in my experience is equivalent: Nature-Throid. I was first prescribed that by a doctor in Vancouver, BC. In the US my doctor continued that prescription, but sometimes when the pharmacy had trouble getting it soon enough, we substituted Armour. I can't tell any difference. Both work for me.

I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, with diagnosed thyroglobulin antibodies (but not peroxidase antibodies; not sure what the implications of the one without the other are).

I also have adrenal issues and find that taking Isocort makes all the difference in the world to my ability to think and have energy. Isocort is bovine adrenal gland that is supposed to be standardized to 2-1/2 mg. of cortisol per pill. It is non-prescription in the US, but I don't think it's available at all in Canada.

I am starting to experiment with EV coconut oil (2 Tablespoons/day) and Atomidine (the latter I've tried before by itself), where I try the Edgar Cayce approach of stimulating the thyroid via 1 drop of Atomidine in a glass of water on Day 1, increasing by 1 drop/day up to 5 drops on Day 5, then stop for 5 days, then repeat. I am wondering if such iodine stimulation is a bad idea or a good idea for autoimmune hypothyroidism, as stimulating the thyroid can, according to some theories, increase the autoimmune response against the thyroid. Can't say it's done anything so far, either way, now that I'm on Day 6 (nor when I've tried it in the past, except perhaps a tiny bit of improvement BEFORE I was on Armour/Nature-Throid, but I never continued long enough to be sure). The only thing that REALLY seems to matter is if I don't take my full 6 Isocort pills that I'm up to these days. (The Isocort bottle says you can take up to 8/day.)

I was hoping the EVCO would help the adrenals. I'll try another round or two of Atomidine starting Day 11 while continuing the EVCO throughout, and if I don't notice any changes from the Atomidine, I'll drop that and keep up the EVCO for another couple of weeks, and if THAT doesn't make obvious improvements, I'll work harder at alkalizing my body.

Vinegar alkalizes the body, but I'm reluctant to use it because I've heard from some sources it's not the best to use, especially if you have candidiasis issues, which I may have, though nowadays I think celiac disease is more of the problem.

So far no obvious changes one way or the other, but I have had the sense most of my life that my body likes the feel of coconut in my tummy, and it's not just the taste. I'll keep you posted..."

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS

1 SIDE EFFECT

[SIDE EFFECTS]  08/11/2009: Laura from Orlando, Fl writes: "Hi everyone: I was recently diagnosed as hypothyroid and was put on bioidentical plant based meds. After using for about ten days, i noticed that i was struggling to breathe. This went on for about 2 days on and off until i decided to stop the meds to see if this could be causing it. Well it has improved about 80% but its still there especially if i try to do housework etc. I later googled hypothyroid symptoms and did found that one of the symptoms is air hunger. Has anyone had a similar experience? I would be grateful for any feedback."

REMOVE OLD DENTAL FILLINGS

1 YEA

[YEA]  05/20/2009: Amy from Los Angeles, CA writes: "I had a hypothyroid condition for over 10 years caused by Hashimoto's Disease where my body produced antibodies to attack my thyroid. I was told this auto-immune disease was completely incurable.

I had terrible toxicity symptoms from extreme fatigue, dizzy spells, memory loss, and multiple food intolerances. Anything that had pesticides, especially herbs, caused near anaphlyactic responses.

I was taking 125 mcg synthroid for 10 years. I never felt right.

I found when I took kelp, my thyroid increased but sometimes it went too high.

I did a lot of research on mercury fillings and decided to have a bio dentist remove them safely. I felt worse as they removed several at each visit. On my last visit, something remarkable happened. The next morning after my last amalgam was removed my basal body temperature returned to normal for the first time in my life.

I ended up in the ER because my thyroid became over active from the medication. The doctor looked at me like I was crazy when I told him it was because of my fillings. My tests confirmed that my thyroid was working on its own and I no longer needed medication. I have been free of hypothyroidism for 5 years now!

Please research the effects of mercury on your hormones. My endocronologist now makes all of her patients remove their amalagams. She has found great evidence that women in menopause can not balance their hormones until their old fillings have been replaced with more bio compatible fillings. No more silver!!!

It's also important to use chlorella or a product like ___ ___ ____ to remove remaining mercury immediately following your dentist visit after amalgam removal.

Good Luck!"

A few years ago, I read an article that Ted wrote about taking vitamins to help hypothyroidism. After two months of taking the recommended dose, my doctor had reduced my thyroid meds by half. Thank you!

Don't know what Ted's recommended vitamins for hypothyroidism is but one patient who was taking thyroid medication and remaining in the low normal range, suddenly soared out the far end of normal range about a month after she started taking a Stress Tablet 4 times a day. This is just a B complex with added Vitamins C & E."
