D-Mannose for Bladder Infections

D-mannose seems to be the active ingredient in cranberry juice that prevents and may stop a bladder infection. You can find D-mannose pills at some health food stores and pharmacies.

[YEA]  02/17/2012: Laura from Rochester, Mn: "All I can say is D-Mannose, D-Mannose, D-Mannose!!! I suffered for years with UTI's. Antibiotics were a temporary fix. Finally, I got a really bad UTI. After yet another round of antibiotics, I was still suffering. I kept going back for testing & the tests came back negative. Well, SOMETHING was wrong, for I was suffering. Drowning myself in cranberry juice did nothing.

Finally read about D-Mannose. Hit it hard for a day or two & it was gone!!! I continued a maintenance dose for weeks to be sure it was gone for good. Knock on wood, that was several years ago & all has been fine since. If I do feel a bit "off", I just take D-Mannose for a day & all is good. It truly is a miracle.

I have also used it on both of my dogs with raving success. With just one day of intense dosing, they are back to normal (though I continue them on a low dose for about a week)."

05/19/2012: Shampoo from Los Angeles, California replies: "UPDATE::: Ok guys, the vitamin C cure DID not work, as the cream of tarter in a few inches of water, DID NOT WORK EITHER. Baking soda didnt work, and I got sick and could have possibly poisoned myself, (i just read about the dangers of taking toom uch baking soda online) UGH....

I was beginning to despair, so NOW, Im feeling great, and for the last week or so Ive been taking massive doses of Echinacea, (4 4oomg pills 4 times thruout the day) but altho I was feeling better, it wasnt really nipping my problem in the bud, as I was beginning to have excrutiating pain at night, and by now I starting to feel fully convinced I have the dread, interstitial cystitus!!!

Guys, D MANNOSE!!! I have tried D mannose TWICE before in the past and it seemed to do nothing for me. It was like drinking sugar water, it seemed to be the most rediculous cure ever!!!!! However, after tireless internet google research, all these women were swearing by it, (even saying things like, 9 out of 10 women are cured by D mannose, and I have interstitial incurable bladder disease and this cured me) so I decided to give it another go.

I tried a really cheap brand of D mannose before, and some women claimed that it DOES make a difference to go with a high quality more expensive brand, and that not all d mannose are created equal, I guess, so I spent about $25.00 for a little jar.

It says on the jar to take a teaspoon every 4 hours, (like 4 times a day) and double for a raging case, (like mine) I took a teaspoon and a half every 2 hours like SEVERAL times a day, and by the third day, I really almost feel normal again, I feel great. I ordered another jar, I really think its working!! Its pricey but worth it.

I suppose the d mannose receptors attract e coli to them and then they attach off the wall and get flushed out of the bladder. Ive also read the d mannose can do this to sperm! So be careful ladies, if your trying to conceive, I read d mannose might interfere with pregnancy. They are even trying to patten a contraceptive using d mannose, lol! I was thinking of using d mannose as a preventative, as many women have had success doing that, but since I want to have a baby... I'll have to try something else when I dont have an infection. Im gonna try a brand of herbal cranberry supplement sold on amazon. One women claims after intercourse she takes 2 pills and a full glass of water and she hasnt had an infection in 10 years.

Im going to continue the d mannose for another week after my symptoms have fully gone. A teaspoon three times a day. Good luck ladies, and I will report back with my progress!! "

05/28/2012: Shampoo from Los Angeles, California replies: "Update:::: ok, guys. The D-Mannose was helping tremendously, and I really felt I was making progress with it, but it didnt actually cure, and Im almost done with my second jar. I even spent two days doubling up my doses, but by the third day, it was back again full force.

Its almost like, whenever I try something new, the bacteria gets blasted, and feels almost gone, then, after a fews days, it like, adapts, mutates, and changes form like a scary Sci Fi Movie, and its back again with a vengeance!! I was still in Pain, and truly desparing, since Ive done hours of tireless research on the internet, and I really was beginning to believe I had some kind of incurable medical condition, and I was in deep Poop!!

Ive tried everything, every herb, Uva Ursi, marshmallow root, dandelion tea, and consilk tea. Echinacea, Goldenseal, Grapefruit seed extract, and oregano oil, and tons of it all, Ive also tried Olive leaf extract before, and ofcourse, Cipro and macrobid. I dont kind of viral bacteria this is, but its awful.

By now, Ive drank tons of water, and its been 2 months with this damn UTI!!!!

I read somewhere on here that a women said you can knock out a UTI with one drop of lavender essential oil, in a coconut oil ovul base, or something. I have a bottle of Aura Cacia lavender oil , and some empty gel caps, so I figured what the heck. Put one drop in an empty gel cap. Swallowed it, Waited a few hours. It was cool, no horrible stomach pains and I didnt poison myself, cuz Ive always been leary of essential oils for that reason. You have to be careful. A few hours later, I tried 2 drops in a gel cap, and that was cool. I then did some research on essential oil therapy, and I read you can cure UTIS with peppermint oil. I have some, so by evening, I took another single drop of lavender and one drop of peppermint oil in the gel cap, and did that. I did have some stomach pains, not bad at all, and some pleasant minty fresh burps, and it was all good. I seem to feel a rush of energy, and very alert, I also read peppermint oil is taken for clarity and mental alertness and that seems to be true.

The next day I went Gung HO!

I put a drop each of rosemary oil, lavender oil, peppermint oil, and clove oil, in an empty gel cap first thng in the morning along with my d mannose and 2 glasses of water. All good!!! Then every two hours, one to two drops pepermint oil or rosemary, in a capsule, Id alternate. Then, at nite, the multioil capsule, and the d mannose. Lots of water thru out the day. I also rubbed the clove oil on my stomach area where the Bladder and pelvic bone is, and it gave me a nice, pleasant, warm, happy, sensation for 30 minutes. It was comforting cuz I actually felt it was doing something!! And it helped with the pain.

Now with clove oil, you must be very careful. Only 6 drops can be extremely poisonous. All essential oils can be poisonous if not used with caution, but clove has been known to melt plastic, it is so strong!! I would never exceed more than 2 drops clove oil a day. The peppermint and rosemary I do alot of thru out the day, depending on how Im feeling, plus I was ultra desperate to get rid of this UTI, and if I had mild stomach pains, or slight headaches from the stuff, It was worth it to me, cuz this really is working!! And I thought I had interstitial cystitus.

It feels almost gone. Id venture to say it is gone. I had mild pains last nite, very minimal, compared to pain thru out the day, and everytime I used the bathroom. I have hardly any pain now when I wee. It really is working. My mother also, is dealing with a resperatory infection, and she has COPD, and I also started her on the oils, and it seemed to clear her infection rite up.

Ive been doing some research on essential oil therapy. Ive heard alot of good things about "THIEVES OIL" Ive read some posts on different forums about people being able to cure UTI's among other things with Thieves oil. and the story about thieves oil is very interesting.

I guess its a combination of oils:: Lemon, clove, eucalyptus, cinnamon, and rosemary, that a group of thieves in the 1800's concocted and rubbed on their hands and bodies to rob plague victims, without catching the plague.

People use it for all kinds of things.

Anyways, I figure oils are great, because Ive read online about gals who have been able to cure themselves by taking multiple herbal supplements, and alot of them, so I figure the oils are the essences and stronger, so it works just as good, and cheap!!"

[NAY]  07/10/2012: Amber from Little Rock, Ar replies: "I took over the reccomended amount every 3 hrs for 2 days and it didn't work I had to get on antibotics. I kept taking it while on antibiotics and the bladder infection still didn't go away. I took the powder and pill form. My mother tried D-Mannose as a preventative and it didn't work for her either. It helped with symptons but didn't cure the infection. Cranberry and ACV didn't work for me either. Next time I get an infection I'm going to try colloidal silver."
08/13/2012: Giuliana from Sacramento, Ca replies: "So I've read a lot of responses about UTI and D-Mannose. Ive had reoccuring UTI's for four years now and recently antibiotics stopped working when they were successful before.

After doing some research and talking to my family it turns out my entire moms side has been dealing with Candida for years. My Grandfather has been on a candida diet (gluten and sugar free) for 20 years, my cousin couldn't eat anything with sugar or gluten her entire childhood and my Aunt has had numebr after number of UTI's and had to change her diet. My mom has been dealing with UTI like symptoms for several years and has just been diagnosed with a kidney infection, close to kidney failure, because antibiotics wont work and the doctors dont know why.

I was just unsuccessful with my second bout of antibiotics. I was ready to tear my hair own when I read about D-mannose and candida. I have been gluten and sugar free for a week and I feel more awake than I have in a year.

About 10 months ago I had a period of 3-4 months where I was CONSTANTLY fatigued, I mean, I couldn't keep my eyes open at 7pm and couldn't wake up in the morning, my whole day was foggy. During that time I was eating a ton of bread, sugary stuff and drinking a lot of beer and liquor. Since I've cut it out I feel like a new person.

D-mannose or whatever you try may not work as well if you're not adjusting your diet too. I feel like the supplement's have been helping a lot, I don't feel the urge or pain anymore, and I'm not eating anything that fuels the bacteria.

It's worth it to eat right for a couple weeks if it stops the frustration for a long period of time."

01/23/2011: KF from Los Angeles, California, Us: "I would like to add an item to your ailment section. I know a lot of women are like me and have suffered from Uninary Tract Infections (UTI). After about 5 years of taking anitbiotics every few months because of a problem and having doctors tell me to drink more water and cranberry juice with little success, I finally discovered D-mannose. This is the part of cranberry that keeps the bacteria from sticking to the bladder. I take 1000mg (2 capsules) every 4-6 hours if I notice my urine get cloudy and start to feel discomfort. I do this for three days, with large amounts of fluids (water and juice) and then I can take a maintaince dose of 2 each day. As far as I can tell, your body flushes what it doesn't need and it won't upset your stomach like the acid in the cranberry juice.

As you know, UTIs can happen from a variety of exposure and often from sexual activity. Keeping water intake high keeps the system flushed. Also using the restroom after activies helps flush the urinary tract immediately.

I am surprised you don't have this ailment in your list. It is the one thing I've taken many many antibotics for (stronger and stronger) over the five years before discovering d-mannose as my natural remedy.

I had also looked on the internet many, many times trying to find an alternative to all these Rx solutions. I think many women could benefit from you adding this one to your list.

Thanks!

KF"

01/23/2011: Lisa from Pleasant Prairie, Wi, Us: "Will taking D-mannose when I do NOT have a bladder infection cause symptoms similar to actually having an infection? One month ago, before I had heard of mannose, I had a bladder infection diagnosed via urinalysis/lab results. I tried treating myself with cranberry, vitamin C, etc... But the pain got too intense and I resorted to antibiotics. After I finished the antibiotics (and lots of probiotics) I continued to take cranberry, then discovered mannose which I began to alternate with the cranberry for maintenance. One week later I started having those old feelings again!

I began the mannose as directed, 2-3 pills 3 times a day for about 4 days. In the meantime, I had a urinalysis that revealed no infection. I still had the heavy, full feeling in the bladder area, worsening as the bladder fills. I have stopped the mannose and the symptoms are lessening leading me to wonder if the mannose caused the symptoms (while no e coli present?). Thanks for reading. Go Packers :)"

01/26/2011: Lynn from Raleigh, Nc replies: "I have had 7 UTI's in the 2 years, which I attribute to too much sex with younger boyfriend. I found out about D-Mannose from a friend last last year. I don't take drugs so I was more than happy to give it a try.

The moment I know I have a UTI, I take 1 teaspoon of the powder and drink 4 -25 oz bottles of water for 2-3 hours... I just keep drinking water and urinating it out. I do this from the early morning until 5 pm. Drinking the water each time I take a teaspoon. Lots and lots of water. It is gone by 8 pm. As a maintenance, I take 1 teaspoon once a week followed by 50 oz of water."
02/03/2012: Kloon from Toronto, Ontario, Canada replies: "I have currently beeing going through something similar. Tried to get rid of the UTI on my own, but ended up taking the antibiotics. For a few days after I finished the anti's, I felt fine/normal. Then I kept getting this pressure feeling, which I had for over a week after. However, I had no other symptoms of a UTI. My friends parent is a pharmasist, and he said that that feeling could actually be from the antibiotics and nothing to do with the UTI. I started taking probiotics and after about 5 days on those the pressure feeling has gotten much much better. It could have actually just been an after-effect of the antibiotics. I have heard great things about d-mannose from a doctor I recently saw and I am going to start taking it everyday as per his directions to help prevent UTI's in the future."
[YEA]  02/14/2012: Stacey from Mesa, Az replies: "D-mannose is the only thing that works for me. Now 3oz powder from Amazon is the cheapest. I always have a bottle on hand. One bottle is about 13 bucks and it takes about a bottle to cure, most of the time a little less than a bottle. If you go to the health food store, it will be triple the price, easy, but still a better option than anything else."
[NAY]  04/19/2012: Krista from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada replies: "I took D-Mannose to get rid of a bladder infection - I took 1/4 teaspoon every 3-4 hours. I got the WORST gas pains of my life. I kept taking it hoping it would work and it did, however, the next day I was in agony with bladder and kidney pain. It took days for it to go away and I will NEVER EVER take D-Mannose again.

I took the pure powder not pills and I took less than the recommended dose. Afterward I felt like I had a worse bladder infection and kept going to the clinic to get tested for UTI which I do not have - instead I have a painful bladder and kidneys. I have blood in my urine. I got tested for Kidney Stones and I don't have them.

Anyway, for those that notice their symptoms get worse with D-Mannose, it is not your imagination. Some of use just do not respond well to D-Mannose regardless of whether it is a natural product."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  05/19/2012: Shampoo from Los Angeles, California replies: "I got gas too the first time I took it. Only once tho, and it was pretty bad gas, I was in bed cramping all nite, and in pain. I think I read thats normal. And you have to take ALOT of d mannose, Like in two days Ive finished half the jar, but its actually working for me this time, where in the past, taking smaller amounts, I actually threw it away cuz it didnt do anything. Thats why I ordered another jar. Id say to treat a really bad infection you need to take two jars of d mannose, Im serious."
[SIDE EFFECTS]  07/25/2013: Mustangmom from Tyler, Tx replies: "I have a UTI and started taking D-Mannose. I had such pain and bloat I thought I would burst. I blamed it on some take out we had eaten... took some more the next morning and had the same effect. Some of us just can't take this stuff... I'd rather have the UTI than the d-mannose."

[YEA]  04/30/2010: Traveler from Santa Barbara, Ca, Usa: "I got turned onto D-Mannose by a former roommate, and while I was sucking down Apple Cider Vinegar straight and water, I was having NO LUCK!

So I bought D-Mannose from the local big-chain health food store for about $35, and while it was expensive, it worked so good and immediately! I ended up getting some $25 stuff off of Amazon, and have used that occasionally if I feel "off" to good effect, though not all the time (like right now I thought I was treating BV and it's not responded expect a little, so I treated it like trich with tea tree oil and coconut oil and that really worked-- but it's only been a few hours.

But yes- D-Mannose is a necessity for a woman's medicine cabinet."

09/01/2010: Tasha from East Coast, Usa replies: "D-mannose 100% works. Not only will it blast a UTI away, but it seems to help with other female problems. Minor yeast, etc. I suffer from chronic volvodynia-like symptoms and this really helps it. Works even better in conjunction with citrical(for oxalate levels)and lots of h20. I highly recommend using the powder as the results are better than with the pills. VERY good stuff."
05/01/2012: Linda from Los Angeles, California replies: "Omg, d-mannose does NOTHING for me. I've tried several times over the years, cuz I'm a chronic UTI sufferer.

This last time, I must have drank a TBSP, in a tall glass of water, every few hours for two days, and no difference, I just got the runs!!!

I wasn't really all that surprised, it's like drinkin sugar water. That's what it is. Some kind of natural sugar that is not metabalized in the body but excreted in the urine. I guess its supposed to bind to the bacteria in the process. I really gave this a good shot, and it didnt work for me."

[YEA]  07/28/2009: IceSeraph22 from Burton, MI, USA: "I have never had UTI before. But when I got it I knew!! I called my mom and got her on the ball. But with all of her wisdom, a hot bath, sea salt, cranberry juice, and some over-the-counter drugs to help with the symptoms, it was the experiences of the people on this site that really made a difference. I went out and grabbed D-Mannose as quick as I could. This progressively helped my condition and in three days of use i was completely healed. Not to be religious. But I was free from pain and bleeding. I know pretty icky but this site keep it real.

I really appreciate this site. and this is not the first time that I have been helped."

[YEA]  07/04/2009: Kiki from San Diego, CA: "I used to get frequent urinary tract infections and was tired of paying $100 to go to the urgent care clinic for another prescription for antibiotics. Then, I read about D-Mannose. It's not an antibiotic because it does not kill bacteria. It is a type of natural sugar that gets excreted through the urinary tract. The sugar prevents bacteria from sticking to the walls of your urinary tract and flushes it away when you urinate. The instructions are on the bottle, but it comes in either tablet or powder form. You take it with a glass of water every few hours. You can use it as a treatment and also as regular prevention if you are the type to get it often. If you want more information, there is a ton on the internet. Many web stores sell it also. This simple treatment saved me a lot of money and a lot of suffering!"

[YEA]  03/20/2009: Kelly from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada: "I got a UTI (urethra) for the first time and the doctor prescribed me a round of Macrobid (antibiotic). I felt extremely sick 12 hours after taking one and almost threw up and had bad diahrrea (gross I know). The doctor wanted to prescribe me a different antibiotic but instead I searched the internet for natural remedies and came up with d-mannose. I bought a brand called ____ (sold here in Canada) from a natural health food store. It wasn't as potent as the supposed ___ brand or ____. It took about 7 days to clear it for good, but it's gone now and when I went back to the doctor a couple of days after taking it she said my infection was "milder and almost gone." She wouldn't attribute this to the d-mannose though. It was better within a couple of days. I started out with 1/2 teaspoon in a glass of water, to make sure I wouldn't have a wierd reaction, about 3-4 times a day. In the first 3 days I recommend 1 teaspoon at least 5 times a day. If you want you can do it every couple of hours for the first day. You can wean yourself off of it, but make sure you take at least a teaspoon a day, when you feel it is gone to make sure. I am amazed! I was also taking apple cider vinegar on and off, but there is so much mixed information about whether you should create an acidic or alkaline environment for the bacteria. I took more baking soda in water too. About a teaspoon in a glass a day. As much as I could drink. The d-mannose helped the most though. I am now passing on it's curative ways to everyone I know. Now I hope ACV works for the cold/flu I have right now."

[YEA]  01/07/2009: Jan from Seattle, Wa: "D-Mannose powder (simple sugar) eliminates urinary tract infection quickly (24-48 hours) and safely by causing the bacteria to be flushed right out of the body with normal urination. D-Mannose is easy to buy, your local Health Food store has it.

It is a shame and unforgivable that doctors are not recommending this product - to people and to pets! I have small 16 years old dog, the dosage I use - 1/2 teaspoon with a little of her favorite treats crumbled in it - 3 times for only 1 to 2 days, and the infection is gone! (No more blood in urine, no rotten smell.) It works like a magic for people and pets! No antibiotic needed!"

07/12/2008: Lore Westphal from Ocala, FL, USA: "I researched where you can get the best D-Mannose: go to: www.tahomadispensary.com. I talked to the Doctor there...they analyse the powder thoroughly and it doesn't come from China either...it's the Best on the market...good luck and God Bless!!!"

[YEA]  10/30/2007: dave L from denver, colorado: "I just wanted to tell your site visitors about how I got rid of my urinary tract infection without taking antibiotics. I am male, 45 yrs old. I took D-mannose pills, 3 pills three times a day for a week and the buning at the tip of the penis persisted, even with drinking a lot of fluids, mostly water and cranberry juice.

I was discouraged because I had only a minor infection in the tip of the eurethra and yet I still couldn't get rid of it. BUT then I tried two teaspoons of 100% natural unbleached sea salt and started getting better immediately.( but it almost made me vomit ...I'm glad I held it down).

I also read at that time that baking soda or alka seltzer could reduce acidity in my system and that seemed to help keep symptoms from creeping back as well. I still think the sea salt which is also alkalizing, unlike regular salt, did the most good.(I also read that it replenishes lost salts and minerals that are unfortunatly washed away becuase of drinking some much fluid.) I kept up the D mannose as well until I felt fine for thee days or so (reducing the # of pills from 3 to 2 to 1 gradually)."

[YEA]  09/05/2007: Jake from Chicago, USA: "D-Mannose cured my urinary tract infection in one day, mostly overnight. I researched on the internet before I knew about earthclinic several months ago and found D-Mannose touted for UTI. My understanding was that it prevented bacteria from clinging to the wall of the bladder thereby helping the bacteria on its way out of your system, and in fact it worked like magic."

[YEA]  09/04/2007: Ami from Mountain View, California: "I saw a desparate help comment from Anonymous in Australia. I used D-Mannose from www.sweet-cures.com and it cured my long-standing bladder infection. I hope I can mention the specific brand, because I tried three other brands of D-Mannose before and they did nothing. D-Mannose from sweet-cures started working overnight. I was getting bladder infections repeatedly (every 2 weeks even after the antibiotic treatment) and finally, my Dr gave told me to take antibiotics every time I have sex, but I didn't want to do that and I started researching. I tried cranberry capsules and that didn't work, and I actually tried D-Mannose too (different brands - some had other herbs/vitamins in it, but I believe one brand was just D-Mannose), and that didn't work. I ordered D-Mannose from UK and that one worked practially over night! I was still starting to get the feeling in my bladder a couple of times even after D-Mannose got rid of it once, so when I felt the feeling, I took D-Mannose a couple of times in a row and it would go away. It's been about 3 years since I took D-Mannose last and I haven't had any bladder infections since. From what I know, D-mannose is a type of sugar - simple sugar - but it attaches to E.coli and Klebsiella."

02/28/2009: Edith from Cambridge, UK replies: "My experience of D-Mannose chimes in with Ami in California. I am not employed by Sweetcures! After months of trying many of the remedies recommended on your and other pages + antibiotics originally, I found that for me, D-mannose taken an hour before and then after sex and then a few hours later has liberated me from bladder-lining cramp and infection. I never used to suffer from this until being post-menopausal... so probably due to decreased protection from oestrogen. Please try it to see if it suits you."

[YEA]  07/23/2007: Tonya from Portland, USA: "I recently got a bladder infection that worsened a few days before leaving town for the week. I had been trying to cure it with cranberry juice & pills, lots of water, and accupressure. It only got worse, even though these remedies had worked in the past. Desperate, I went to my doc before leaving town and he prescribed antibiotics. I cried - I hate the stomach trouble and yeast infection that ALWAYS follow this treatment. I read your site the night before flying out and decided to give d-mannose a try since a friend once reccomended it. MIRACLE! The next day I felt much better (no more bladder/kidney pain) and within two days the burning sensation ceased. I don't know how I would have made it through my flight otherwise! It's now been 4 days and my infection is steadily improving and with much quicker results than I ever got with cranberry pills. If you've tried other natural remedies and they don't work, TRY D-MANNOSE!"

[YEA]  03/15/2007: Melinda from Arlington, VA: "I've been having regular bouts of urinary tract infections and in the past I've HAD to go on antibiotics - after trying cranberry juice, UTI-Clear (Native Remedies product), and AZO pills. I've had a UTI for the past couple of days and it seemed to be getting worse. I looked on your site and found D-Mannose. I went to Whole Foods first thing this morning and bought a bottle. I started feeling better within about 30 minutes of taking it. When I got home this evening, I was starting to feel a little pain again, and so I took another dose of D-Mannose. I feel SO much better! THANK YOU!!"

[YEA]  03/12/2007: Adrian from Pensacola, Fl: "I tried D-Mannose after suffering with a UTI for over a week. I tried 0 cranberry juice, AZO cranberry tablets, and NOTHING seemed to work. I found this site and decided to try the D-Mannose. I am forever doubtful of things sounding too good to be true. In one day I am feeling 100% better! I told my husband that I could not believe that this stuff works this fast. He does not believe it's possible. All that I can say is I suffered for over a week, and right now I feel wonderful!!"
