Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda
Alternative Healing Ingredients
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Baking Soda (aka sodium bicarbonate)
The amount of Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) needed to react with baking soda to get a pH level near 6.5-7.0 is close to 10 parts ACV to one part baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Always start on the low side first!
If you are not used to it, try 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 2 tablespoons of ACV in 250 ml (8 oz) water. Then increase slowly as needed. For tougher cases like Acid Reflux, you can go up to 2 tablespoons but you must start slowly or you will upset your stomach. Most people will not need this much baking soda.
02/18/2011: Stacey from Sarasota, Florida: "Can you use this combo of Apple Cider Vinegar and baking soda when pregnant?"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 10/27/2010: Donna from Nova Scotia, Canada: "I developed severe acid reflux after antibiotics and prednisone for a respiratory virus in March. I was taking 2 nexium 40mg, sulcrate, zantac, and domperidone, and had a very limited diet. My acid reflux was still awful. My gastroscope showed Barrett's esophagus and severe gastritis. I had elevated liver enzymes, gallbladder attacks, severe weight loss, and chronic fatigue. Previously I didn't have a problem with acid reflux and led an active life.
I started the apple cider vinegar with baking soda three days ago and can't believe the improvement already. Originally I used 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar and a 1/4 tsp of baking soda and worked up to 2 tbsp of cider and 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda. I have been able to stop domperidone and zantac and only take 1 nexium now. I hope to be able to soon stop taking any nexium. I still have some burning and use DGL, baking soda, and chew gum. I tried several times in the past to reduce the nexium but the burning in my chest was always so unbearable that I always started taking it again. I am concerned about the 2 days off of the ACV. Do I wait to do this once things have settled down? Thank you so much Ted! I feel like I am getting my life back."
10/03/2010: Aloha from Honolulu, Hawaii : "It's been interesting reading all the comments on ACV/BS etc. I have been on Prilosec for years for acid reflux and it helps the burn but it doesn't help the constant regurgitation... Everyday my food/liquids come back up into my mouth and I can either chew it up again and re-swallow it or spit it out.. I know that is disgusting but I'm sure I'm not the only one suffering with this. My doctors approach to this so far is to "take more Prilosec" I don't want to take Prilosec to begin with because I heard it robs your bones of calcium. Well I've tried taking the ACV without BS and as soon as I take it, I begin to get a burn in my stomach. Will the BS help this??? and how do you know when you have mixed the right amount of BS to bring it to a PH of 7... How do I measure that??? Thanks..."
[YEA] 08/19/2010: Kelly from Gaithersburg, Md: "I'm a 39 year old female with horrible acid reflux. I had my gallbladder removed about 10 years ago. I still would get horrible bouts of acid reflux after eating anything tomato based, spicy, creamy, or acidy (like fruit) I tried the ACV (2 tbl spoons) with 1/4 tsp of baking soda and 8 oz of water last night. I was attempting to enjoy some red wine and knew I would have a horrible night of reflux. I made the mix and drank it right before bed. It WORKS! No sour burps or acid burning it went away completely! I have slept with antacids, Pepto and pepcid by my bedside and none of it ever worked but this did! Thank you so much! I'm finally not afraid to eat and drink the things I love!"
[YEA] 05/16/2007: Dee from Fairfax, VA: "I'd been having terrible heartburn for over a week. So bad that that my kids and husband were very worried. A few years ago I had six ulcers! But didn't want to start the standard gastro treatments lansoprazole or purple pills - I'm well aware of the downsides to them. My gastric problem was probably caused by my ADHD, I frequently forget to eat because I get so hyperfocused I don't notice I'm hungry! So, I went looking for a homeopathic cure and found your website. I read a whole bunch of stuff and probably confused one thing with another nevertheless this is what happened: I made the ACV mixture adding the Baking Soda also 2 tbsp Aloe juice; 1 tbsp of organic honey; 1 tbsp of'Coconut Oil (using warm water, which melts the honey and VCO). I tried with and without the VCO and for those who find the ACV drink unpalatable the VCO helps alot! The heartburn stopped in 24 hours! Major miracle. I felt focused, relaxed, energetic and pain free. The only side effect of note was/is gas. Is this from the VCO? Is there anything I can do about that? And is it OK to blend all this together? Should I be drinking it before or after or with a meal? I don't know about the other magical effects of VCO its only been 2 days! Thanks for this great site, its already helped me a lot!"

03/14/2009: Angie from South Pasadena, Ca replies: "Dear Dee: A couple of things about your post. I'm really glad this has worked for you. Aloe gives many people including me gas. I've tried both aloe and acv, but acv works much better although it increases hypersalivation for me. It doesn't do that, thankfully, for most people though, according to what I've read on this board. Also, I would caution against using coconut oil. Oils are known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter which allows acids to travel up the esophagus. I'm going to try the acv and baking soda mixture by itself to see if the hypersalivation is any better. Also, people have had success drinking that for hair loss which is a big issue for me to. All the best, Angie"
03/15/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hi Dee,
I have a question for you. Did you have the gas and bloating along with acid regurg before starting the regimen you described that got rid of the acid regurg?
I also had a problem with almost constant heartburn, indigestion, gas and bloating which developed into ulcers 3 - 4 times per year. I got rid of all of them when I discovered that bleached flour products were causing them. Never had an ulcer since. Before I stumbled up on the real cause, I blamed sausage & other spicy foods I loved for causing them. Now I can eat all those spicy things, including cayenne pepper and hot sauce I want with no problems. Unbleached flour gives me no problems but I stick with whole grain products because the extra fiber also corrected the constipation problems.
My stomach also tells me to stay away from any acid fruit or juice in a metal can, including tomatoes. Otherwise, all foods are go, including raw onions."
Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon
[YEA] 02/13/2013: Lilli from Kenmore, Wa, Usa: "I've found that ACV works the best for my acid reflux. However, I had to tweak the formula a bit.
I cannot stand the taste of straight ACV so I added fresh lemon juice in equal amounts to the ACV. I used to drink a tall glass of water but found that too much water triggered the AR, especially before bedtime.
Now I use apx. 6 ounces of filtered water and add 1 tbs. ACV, and 1 tbs. Lemon juice. If this mixture is too sour, just add a squirt of good quality honey. Some have mentioned adding baking soda. I never have, but if the acidity bothers you, it is worth a try.
I drink the mixture throughout the day and never before bedtime. I've even tried drinking it with my meals in place of other drinks.
Another thing that has helped tremendously is not eating or drinking after the evening meal and at least 4 hours before bedtime. I also limit my intake of liquids while I am eating to aid digestion. I've added more raw fruits and vegetables. Apples work really well.
I find that these things work best whenever I feel the first twinge or feel the acid coming up in my throat."
Apple Cider Vinegar, Manuka Honey
04/22/2011: Acidic from Campbellcroft, Ontario: "I have been reading the information on a number of sites lately regarding ACV and also MANUKA honey. They seem to have a number of benifits, my reason for the sudden interest in these treatments is that I have had stomach problems for yrs. and yrs. But it was always on average, just a minium effect in my life. I have been taking perscribed medication for this problem for yrs. In Feb. of this yr. I had a tooth problem actualy three teeth two with bacteria infection, and one that needed root canal, my pain was severe!! I was taking lots and lots of IBUPROFEN just to be able to function.
When I saw my dentist he perscribed antibiotics the first didn't work so he perscribed a much stronger one, after three days I could not stand the pain in my stomach and the heartburn so I quit the antibiotics, after all was said and done I am left with this heartburn that is so bad it is burning my throat and the back of my mouth, morning to night.
I have just yesterday purchased ACV with mother as I understand is the best one! Also picked up some Manuka honey. I really hope this works? I have a question Can I mix the honey and the vinager together in a drink and also if I boil the water and put the honey in the boiling water will the heat of the water damage any part of the honey's good properties. Also is there a maxium amount that I should take? I don't want to exceed it and create another problem. If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it very much
Apple Cider Vinegar, Orange Peel, Aloe
[YEA] 11/13/2009: Crazydogjack from New Castle, Pa, USA: "Okay. Here's my advice to acid reflux. If you take the "medication" traditionally given for reflux, what happens is that it depletes the acid in your stomach and then you don't digest your food properly. I was on medication for 11 years and decided there was a better way. There are a slew of side effects from taking those suggested meds. This is what I came up with on my search for something better to cure this problem. I was very skeptical that it would work but I thought what the heck I'll try it and it worked.
In the begininning I used a combination of orange peel extract every other day, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and water daily and organic Aloe Vera juice as needed. After two months I became symptom free. I drink the Apple Cider Vinegar and water everyday because of the health benefits. I also keep aloe vera juice on hand and I keep the orange peel extract on hand just in case I have a flare up. I have been symptom free for over a year and I feel great! Best of luck to you! I am sure this will work for you too!"
03/16/2010: Sasha from New York, Ny replies: "I am intrigued by your solution- I was put on Prilosec by my ENT(didn't work) then aciphex by the GI (made my symptoms worse) and digestive enzymes by the Naturopathic doc. Nothing worked. I have silent reflux, no heartburn, but spasms and throbbing in throat / larynx, constantly clearing my throat from excess mucus... I wil try your remedy- did you use baking soda with the Apple Cider Vinegar?? Before or after eating? Aloe vera juice when???? What is orange peel extract? in what form does it come?"
Apple Treatment for Acid Reflux
Home Remedy Options
- An Apple or Apple Slices
- Apple Juice
- Apple Sauce
An apple (or two) a day is reported to prevent acid reflux and can be used to stop an attack. A small dish of applesauce or a glass of apple juice can sometimes work as well.
[YEA] 11/15/2011: Varinder from Houston, Tx/usa: "I just eat 1/2 an apple anytime I eat acidic food and acidity is bothering due to overeating or fried food. It has helped me. I don't take any medicines, always the natural cure. It works. Doctors were writing prescriptions for my acid reflux but thank God I checked home remedies."
[YEA] 10/26/2011: Cool Woman from Bremerton, Washington: "Im 18 years old and studying in college, when 3 days ago I justs started feeling this sensation like acid was backing up in my throat. So the first day I ignored it, but it continued to grow worse so on the second day I started popping tums and they didn't help at all. So on the third day I decided not to eat anything at all in hopes that the sensation would go away. Well haha, halfway through the day it still persisted and I couldn't take it anymore so I got online, found this website, and out of desperation tried eating apples. To my surprise, within 30 minutes the sensation cleared right up and I feel much better. The weird feeling in my throat is not completly gone, but I feel like if I keep eating the apples and stay away from trigger foods, I will be fine :) thanks for this great tip"
[YEA] 01/07/2010: Van from Sa, Tx: "Keeping this short so as not to repeat information -- I stopped taking my meds for a couple days till symptoms appeared. Tried the ACV, and it didn't really work (for the reflux). Tried the almonds, worked slightly. Ate the apple...worked almost immediately!!! I was amazed. Since then I have been eating on average 2 apples a day, drinking apple juice with my meals (which seems to work also). I still am experimenting with the ACV though...but for my sinus clogs and allergies...too early to tell but that seems to be working slowly as well.
Thanks to all who post here and to the site owners for helping people try to find more healthy ways to live. The part that really chaps my hide though is that doctors HAVE TO KNOW that these remedies exist and work and yet they still try and sell us on those prescription meds."
11/24/2011: Laurie from Huntington, Indiana replies: "I found this site doing a google search for natural acid reflux remedies. I suffered a C. Diff infection last spring, and the first thing the gastroenterologist told me was to stop taking Nexium. I had no idea that proton pump inhibitors could contribute to such infections. I had to start taking it again because the reflux was getting to be too bad, but I'm going to give the apples a try! If it works, hooray!"
[YEA] 12/14/2009: Mrgrace from Concord, Nc: "I have suffered from Acid Reflux for over 10 years and have been on a precribstion for at least 7 years. I still have problems from time to time and noticed that eating an apple helped me. I think I just lucked up with that, I tried it only a few times and it seemed to work, so I deciced to google apples helping with reflux and found this site! It is good to know it is not just me, it really works! One apple (I have used Granny Smith, Gala, Red Delishious and all worked fine)"
[YEA] 11/30/2009: Nicole from Springville, Utah: "I am 32 years old. I tried the pickle juice remedy that I read about on this site. Being a pickle lover, I was open to trying it! I drank some of the juice from a jar of kosher dills. I felt some relief a few minutes later. The pain from the acid burning diminished, but did not go away. I also read that apples do the trick, but not having any apples on hand, I turned to my jar of organic apple sauce. It is helping also. I think more so than the pickle juice did. Cold applesauce had a cooling effect to help ease the burn of the acid. If you have a very sensitive stomach, I recommend trying the apples or applesauce first, before the pickle juice. Good luck!"
[YEA] 09/05/2009: Erin from Rockingham, North Carolina: "When my acid reflux got so bad that it came back every morning even without eating any trigger foods, I decided I couldn't keep taking antacids every day. I tried ACV first, but it upset my stomach and gave me gas. So next I tried eating an apple when the acid reflux came on. It worked immediately and has worked every single time since then, over several months. Plus, the acid reflux doesn't come back later in the day or the next day either!"
[YEA] 09/01/2009: Dm from Dublin, Ireland: "My wife read about the Apple Cure for Reflux. I gave it a try. Its now 1 week since taking a Purple Pill and substituting it with a Green Apple in the evening. At this stage I would normally expect to be in agony. Good news, total relief. So, I am now baffled, I have been taking the PP for 7 years and warned of the long term oncsequences if I stopped. But if after 1 week I feel this good, then I am pushing on! Ill keep you posted...."Replies
09/02/2009: Connie from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, USA replies: "Do you mean green apples such as Granny Smith apples, or green apples as in unripe apples?"
12/08/2009: Doreen from Hartford, Ct replies: "What type of green apple did you use. For eg.Granny smith apple or (green not ripe)"
EC: Believe it's Granny Smith.
05/07/2010: Eve from Sayville, New York replies: "Dm..how has that been working for you?"
