Oil Pulling Health Benefits

While oil pulling has become a mainstream craze in the past few years, its origin is believed to have started thousands of years ago in India. It is known to be part of the traditional Hindu system of medicine called Ayurveda, which involves natural forms of healing, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing.

Oil pulling is basically swishing organic or any type of edible oil in the mouth for a certain number of minutes. Many say it has to be 20 minutes to reap its full benefits, which is removing toxins from the body through the mouth.

Oil pulling is just one of the many oral practices of Ayurveda, which also include chewing herbs and other medicinal plants. Many people believe that this practice helps to cleanse the body by detoxifying and cleaning teeth and gums. A bonus benefit of oil pulling is that it is said to make people's teeth whiter than before.

Since it has become popular when it was introduced to the West about 20 years ago, many products have been introduced in the market. But resources say that before extra virgin coconut oil, the first practitioners used sesame and sunflower oil. Until this day, some attest to the effectiveness of sesame oil over other types of oil.

Types of Oil Pulling

From the resources found online, there is only one way to do oil pulling, but further research reveals that there are two ways: Gandusha and Kavala Graha.

In Gandusha, people are told to fill their mouths with the oil of their choice and let it sit for about three to five minutes before spitting it out. On the other hand, Kavala Graha allows people to put just enough oil in the mouth, let is stay there for three minutes, gargle for a few seconds, and spit it out.

The swishing of oil in the mouth for a longer period has become the trademark of the modern-day oil pulling.

How To Do Oil Pulling?

There are at least 3,000 years of testimonials as to the effectiveness of this traditional Ayurvedic medical treatment — and it's safe, easy and effective!

    1.    First thing in the morning, before brushing teeth or eating, swish one teaspoon to one tablespoon of natural, food-quality oil (sesame, coconut, olive, sunflower or safflower) in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. You must do it this long for it to work.
    2.    Do not gargle in your throat.
    3.    The oil will be milky and foamy when ‘done’.
    4.    Spit out, do not swallow the oil with all the 'bad stuff'.  If you have a septic system, spit oil into the trash can instead of the sink (in order to avoid potential plumbing problems.)
    5.    Rinse mouth thoroughly with warm water.
    6.    Brush teeth.
    7.    Your mouth feels clean and fresh.

How Does Oil Pulling Work?

The theory behind this home treatment is that as the oil swishes around teeth and gums it ‘pulls’ bacteria and other debris into the oil, detoxifying the mouth. Our mouths are laboratories breeding billions of nasty critters: viruses, bacteria (Streptococcus), parasites and fungi (Candida) and all of their toxic waste products.  All of the above contribute to gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other oral problems. This toxicity is also held to be at least partially responsible for many other diseases, including heart disease, arthritis, eczema and chronic infections. Some oils seem to help with weight loss.

Getting rid of these unwanted troublemakers in our mouths is one less problem for our immune systems to have to deal with. If this alternative remedy did nothing other than aid our immune systems (it does a lot more!), it would be worth doing for that alone.

The oils used for Oil Pulling vary widely. However, the most popular oil is sesame oil, followed by coconut oil, sunflower oil, olive oil and safflower oil. On the Table of Contents on this page, take a look at Sandy’s Oil Pulling Compilation. She listed the benefits reported for many different oils. Some people use the same oil all of the time, others switch oils periodically.

Scientific studies have generally focused on how effective oil pulling is when compared to various mouthwashes or other oral health drugs and products and outcomes varied.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

In modern-day practice, oil pulling's benefits weigh heavily on the cosmetic side or dental purposes, which is whitening the teeth and making gums healthy as well as clearer skin as a result of detoxification.

Certain foods and drinks can cause the teeth to darken such as coffee and tea. While brushing at least twice a day is advice, sometimes it is not enough. Prophylaxis or teeth cleaning twice a year is also recommended. But during the time in-between, it cannot be helped that the remnants of food stay in the teeth that cause cavities.

Cavities not only affect the teeth but also the gums. When not thoroughly cleaned, the plaque becomes tartar and can cause a condition called periodontitis or gum infection.

Some mouthwash products are too strong for children and adults, which makes oil pulling as an ideal form of cleaning the teeth.

The Indian Journal of Dental Research published a study in 2009 that says oil pulling (using sesame oil) is better in reducing plaques compared to commercial mouthwash. The study finds that oil pulling can also help in gingivitis treatment.1

The continued swishing also helps in removing bacteria that cause bad breath. Oil is much thicker compared to water, which makes the bacteria and other elements hold on to it when removed through swishing.

However, its roots in Ayurvedic medicine draw deeper benefits of oil pulling. The practice has evolved and has been integrated into other traditional practices including yoga. Like some alternative healing or medicine, Ayurvedic uses energy to determine the state of health of individuals.

Oil pulling is believed to promote overall wellness simply because it helps remove all the toxins from the body. As the term suggests, the oil pulls all the toxic substances from the body through the mouth.

Since the body has been removed of all these toxins, the incidence of certain diseases such as arthritis, asthma, headache, throat infection is much lower than when not doing oil pulling. In most extreme cases, it is said that doing oil pulling regularly can prevent cancer and similar diseases, precisely because it has removed the toxins that cause these illnesses.

Gum and Mouth Diseases

Oil pulling has been used extensively for centuries as a natural cure for gum and mouth problems such as gingivitis, cavities, inflammation and bleeding gums. It also helps prevent bad breath.

Looking and Feeling Better

Many regular oil pullers report that their mouth feels clean and fresh and their teeth are whiter. This is a much better home treatment to whiten teeth than commercial tooth whitening preparations which contain very strong chemicals and are fairly expensive. Users also report having clearer, healthier skin after using this natural treatment as well as feeling mentally invigorated. Many people have said that oil pulling helped to curb their appetites and helped them to lose weight.

Ailments Healed With OP

The list of conditions that oil pulling can treat is a very long one! For hundreds of years, this alternative cure has been used to assist the immune system and to prevent or cure, among other problems:

Heart Disease
Arthritis
Eczema
Chronic Infections
Coughs
Headaches Insomnia
Poor Kidney Function
Bronchitis
Bad Breath
Gum Disease
Stained Teeth
Low Immunity
Streptococcus

Scientific Proofs

Ayurvedic medicine is still considered as part of alternative healing and there is no scientific study that suggests the effectiveness of oil pulling, at least in terms of treatment and prevention of diseases.

However, testimonials of its dental benefits cannot be set aside as practitioners themselves have seen the results. If only for cosmetic purposes, oil pulling has proved to be an effective way of taking care of the teeth and the mouth.

Still, health professionals caution people from overdoing it because there are certain types of oil that may be harmful to the body. The caution is not so much on the practice itself but more on what is put in the mouth.

Some believe that sesame oil is the better among the other types of oil available. Still, coconut oil, which is abundant in Asia where oil pulling is said to have originated, is probably the best because it is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, too. Coconut oil has enzymes composition that prevents the acidic Streptococcus bacteria, the one that causes tooth decay.

Aside from the commercial oil that may contain chemicals, oil pulling is a safe practice that helps people with their dental problems. Even if there is no scientific proof yet of its efficacy in preventing diseases, there is no harm in doing oil pulling. It is completely harmless especially when done properly and correctly.

if you don't mind swishing oil in the mouth for about 20 minutes, why not give oil pulling a try and see its benefits not only to the mouth but also to the whole body as well.

I've OPed for about three years now. And I've followed endless discussions about what it does and does not do. I now have a theory.

I don't think that OP "pulls" anything out of the system. What it does seem to do is infuse your body with EFA's sublingually (under your tongue) which enters the bloodstream bypassing gastric juices. I found a patent that uses oil as a transporter of medication for a sublingual medication. From what I read, Oleic Acid is commonly used for this transport.

It makes sense why some people have skin conditions clear up with OP. They are being dose with good oil.

Secondly, there is now do doubt that the health of your mouth is directly linked to your organ health. A well known biologist, a friend of my Dad, said he thinks that the bacteria in the mouth, the really bad stuff that forms plague, is very attracted to the acids in the oil. So it melts this bad stuff and then you spit it out. That's why your teeth get much cleaner than by conventional means, like alcohol based rinses.

And so, when you melt this bad stuff, you simply spit it out..buh bye.

Now, I think this is the major link to why people experience healing while OP. As your mouth is populating with all this nasty bacteria (or worse, infections), you are swallowing the stuff. That bacteria is attacking you internally. That is why some people have had heart attacks after a dental procedure, like a root canal, that infuses their body with nasty stuff. Yes, it can attack the heart and other vital organs.

OP simply removes it so that it cannot go anywhere else. Dr. Karach talked about curing a long time blood disease. Perhaps his dental health was very bad.

Add a drop of Oil of Oregano to your oil pulling for about a week every 3 or so months, and you have a powerful anti-bacterial agent to kill all this stuff. Oregano Oil is natures anti-biotic, so it should not be abused, and used just like you would a pharmaceutical anti-biotic.

All these theories I have come from a long time listening and discussing this modality.

OP is very gentle. It's just food for goodness sake! And I believe that it should be a common morning occurrence, just like brushing your teeth.

I've actually used it to get rid of sinus infections and lung infections. It has cut down on the time I am sick, but darn if I've hardly gotten sick since I've started OP. Also, my long time seasonal allergies are gone. If I do have any lung complaints, I OP back to back until I don't cough anything up anymore.

I have used (always unrefined and organic) Sesame, Sunflower, Walnut, Macadamia, coconut, Udo's Oil, Total EFA Oil....amongst others. My personal all time favorite is Sesame, hand's down. I have noticed that if you change your oil about ever two months, it's like a renewed therapy. Don't know why, perhaps your body is getting used to that particular EFA formula. But I have noticed that when I change, my teeth get whiter even more.

Thought I'd weigh in since I haven't been here for awhile. Actually, it was myself and Ms Kitty from Oregon that turned Earth clinic onto this some years back. I'm so pleased to see that this is still being discovered and that people are having such good results.

OP is a no-brainer. It's not dangerous, it can't pull stuff out of your body, like medication, it's simply swishing some "food" around your mouth. But what it does do is invaluable.

Keep Swishing!!

I wanted to add a note concerning the addition of a drop or two of Oil of Oregano during the OP. You'll want to make sure that you get ORGANIC oil, and not only that, but make sure it is labeled as "Oil of WILD OREGANO! What sells under the label "Oil of Oregano" or "Oregano Oil" is really Marjoram, and does NOT possess the wonderful, natural, anti-biotic properties of Oil of Wild Oregano. Don't let 'em fool ya!

It is oil from a specific wild plant (not the same plant known in Spain as "oregano" and used in cooking) that grows on the hillsides of the Mediterranean region which is the real deal. It is the most powerful anti-biotic agent in nature.

I wouldn't have known the difference if someone hadn't once told me, so I wanted to pay it forward. Thank you for the opportunity.

Loving this site! :0)

Be blessed!!

I think you're right on in your assessment of what is going on when doing OP.

I would add that the emulsifying effect of the oil being broken down into tinier globules is probably also trapping any loosened material (food particles, bacteria, sugars, dead cells, etc... ) so it is removing a lot of the non-mucous membrane matter from your mouth. This also includes good bacteria, but by lowering the overall population of all types of bacteria, I think it levels the playing field allowing the good bacteria a chance to take hold to maintain the necessary balance for a healthy environment.

I also think that the body may be much more specific in which EFAs it absorbs there so it could pull just the ones it needs instead of everything that passes through the digestive track. These EFAs are also pure and not first acted upon by stomach acids or other digestive processes.

Have started using coconut oil but not sure how you can fit a whole tablespoon in your mouth, even a full teaspoon feels a lot of oil! Are you sure its not meant to be a teaspoon?!

In my experience, a half tsp is usually sufficient and I spit in trash not sink after 20 seconds, 15-20 minutes in ridiculous, as there is sooooo much saliva built up long before 15 minutes even. For me, 20 seconds and spit, and coconut oil is the best, and it does scavenge bacteria out between the teeth, because I have chronic gum issues. I take the half tsp, and start the process and then 20 sec later, I spit red into garbage, it takes at least 2 more times before the spit runs clear and I do not rinse that out ever....because it is naturally antimicrobial and will help protect and keep bacteria level low as you sleep.

Hope that helps!

Adjust the amount of oil lower until it isn't too much for you. Take what you can handle. One size doesn't fit all.

When people refer to coconut oil, I don't know if they mean the solid, white oil but that sounds yucky. I imagine it causing a gag reflex. Medium Chain Triglycerides oil (MCT) is the lighter, liquid version of coconut oil and would be easier to get whole tablespoon in your mouth. It's more expensive though but good to have on hand for diet. I just thought, you could warm up to liquefy the solid before taking and that may be what everyone does! Oh well, I prefer the lighter taste of MCT or sunflower oil and use less than a Tbs so that I can keep in my mouth for the entire 20 min.

Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees (F), so the solidified oil quickly liquifies inside mouth.

Coconut oil is not the first oil recommended for OP...centuries of experience recommend organic, cold pressed sesame oil, which is what I use.

Isn't sesame polyunsaturated, and thus cause thyroid problems. Perhaps coconut oil with its lauric antibiotic properties might be better. Also rancidity is not a problem. Perhaps check out Ray Peat You Tube presentations.

Virgin coconut oil (unrefined) is recommended for one tablespoon for ingestion daily. The OP needs less than a teaspoon.. level perhaps... Enjoy!!!! both if you use them. I do!

Wow, I love this option. I was also afraid I wouldn't last for 20 minutes with oil in my mouth. I use the black seed oil to rinse my mouth and I spit it out in barely 5 minutes.

Check out Dr. Andreas Moritz's site. He recommends only a couple of minutes of OP. Longer recontaminates your blood system as the toxins that are pulled from around the gums will be absorbed into your blood system. Repeating the OP process an additional 1-2 times for just a couple of minutes is highly beneficial in reducing bacteria concentrations in the mouth. Also, Dr. Joseph Mercola has some insight into the benefits of OP. I have backed up this protocol by having swabbed my gums and checking a live culture Electron Microscope platelet and repeating the OP an extra couple of times show a benefit. This all depends on the health condition of your teeth and gums. I suspect that after a month of OP, your gums should be healthier and one OP per day would be enough. Just before going to bed seems to work the best for me. I was amazed at how much bacteria was present in my mouth, and researching how dangerous these are and the health disorders that they cause. Keeping our mouth analytically clean is paramount in keeping our Gut healthy and reducing many health disorders.

I just OP'd for the first time. I used organic coconut oil because that's what I had on hand. When I spit out, mine was red, too. Can anyone shed light on this?

Also, my tongue and teeth (actually gums, I guess) were tingling, and I could feel the glands in my throat. Is this to be expected?

Lastly, it's just been discovered that my thyroid is enlarged. Does anyone have any idea if there could be a positive effect on the thyroid by OPing?

I'm *SO* glad I found this site!!

Some people are allergic to coconut, so I wonder if the tingling isn't an allergic reaction.

Have you been diagnosed with periodontal disease? I wonder if your gums aren't bleeding...

I wanted to comment that the usage of the word "gargle" on your Oil Pulling page is a tad alarming given the warning NOT to gargle in the throat near the end of the instructions. It seems Dr. Karasch used it as well. I have never heard or used the word "gargle" unless it meant using the throat, so it is a tad misleading for the unsuspecting or the casual reader. Perhaps the alert could be placed at the beginning of the article to clarify the usage of the word and for safety's sake. Thank you for your time.

Hello. I get the relevant information about oil pulling; actually it is totally different than what I understood. I am using anointing oil, which is ancient oil and now used for health and healing purpose. This is very effective oil and root of Jewish people. Now it is available online too.

Instructions and Theories

These are instructions from India in which only 2 types of oil can be used. However, as you will read below in our Reader Feedback section, people are experimenting with different oils, adding anti-bacterial and anti-viral oil essences. Soon we might have a purist vs. renegade oil pulling battle!

INSTRUCTIONS:

First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it's still yellow, you haven't done it long enough.

You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Make sure you do it on an empty stomach, however. Spit it out in the toilet when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well.

Follow by drinking 2 - 3 glasses of water.

DO NOT SWALLOW THE OIL.
It now contains parasites and bacteria!

DO NOT GARGLE IN THE THROAT -- THE OIL IS MEANT TO BE SWISHED IN THE MOUTH ONLY.

DO IT SLOWLY.

HOW IT WORKS:
The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed.

Note #1:
Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars.

Note #2:
The old school says that only sesame and sunflower oils produce favorable results. However, our readers report success using other oils too.

Note #3:
If after meals, wait at least 4 hours before you Oil Pull. After drinking, wait 1 hour.

Note #4:
A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease/ailment is being cured.

Note #5:
Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects after a day or two. Your body is healing.

Note #6:
Will your dental fillings fall out? It's possible but highly unlikely unless there is pre-existing damage or loose fillings.

The oil will start to thin out after a few minutes because saliva is constantly being mixed in and swished about.

EC, Could you include with the basic instructions on oil pulling Ted's suggestion to detox for two weeks before beginning the oil pulling process? I think he recommended using 1 tablespoon ACV with 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, stir well, add 1/2 to 1 cup of water and drink one or two times a day for two weeks; OR, take 2 tablespoons of lemon juice plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken two times a day. The alkalization tends to remove toxins if done for at least two weeks. Then on the second or third week they can start oil pulling. This regimen is supposed to greatly reduce the Herksheimer effect of getting worse before you get better. It seems like many people are just starting out with the oil pulling first and wanting to quit because they didn't prepare properly and are suffering from the Herksheimer effect."

11/23/2010: Hansika from Jakarta, West Jawa replies: "Just tried Oil Pulling with sunflower oil... Wondering how people can do it for 20 mins? I had to spit it out after 7 mins as could not hold it any longer. The saliva mixed with the oil made it very liquid and a lot for me to hold in my mouth whils swishing it around, also my mouth muscles were kind of tired. When I spat it out, it was white but very runny. Would I be able to do it longer with practice?"

11/24/2010: Hansika from Jakarta, Indonesia replies: "Hi, I could do it for 10 mins. Today. Had to spit it out or it would have gone down my throat. What I spat was white and foamy but still very runny. Am I doing it correct?"

11/26/2010: Linda from San Antonio, Texas replies: "I have been oil pulling for about 8 months, mostly with sunflower oil. Usually when I spit it out after 20 minutes, the oil is yellowish white and creamy in appearance. For the last couple of days, it has been yellow and I noticed a metallic taste in my mouth while doing the op. Last night, my throat started burning after about 8 minutes and I had to stop. I have been taking colloidal silver in a different concentration for about a week, could this be causing the change in the oil's appearance and taste? Or is it a symptom of detoxing from something? Has anyone heard of these results while oil pulling? Thanks for your answers and God Bless this site! I have used many wonderful remedies from Earth Clinic."

12/07/2010: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "Hi, like Hansika I had a very rough start to oil pulling. Started with 1 Tbsp sesame oil but couldn't hold it beyond 30 seconds before gagging reflex. I persevered each day for a week but never got beyond 2 minutes plus what I spat out looked like virulent yellow paint! That was some months ago. I have always detested the smell and texture of fats and oils although I can take cod liver oil without too much trouble, recently I have discovered that EVCO is quite palatable (it is always a hard consistency in this climate so can be chewed)

After reading some feedback about starting small and being occupied while swishing Ihave given it another go, this time with EVCO. Day 1- 1 tsp for 5 mins: Day 2- 2tsp for 10 mins: Today is day 3 and have been swishing for 20 mins while cruising EC and writing this.... So if you have trouble with OP start small and find an oil you can tolerate. Love EC"

12/13/2010: Tanya from Hailey, Id, Usa replies: "Since 2006, I started getting serious pains in my left jaw, teeth and tongue. 4 doctors looked at me and couldn't find anything wrong. I thought it was TNA (trigeminal neuralgia) but the pains would not be quite as nasty as described for those victims. Middle of November, I started a craving a fresh doughnut not thinking very highly of myself through depression and constant pain. I also had a lump in my tongue that I'd had before in other spots, so I could tell that I was so stressed that I was straining my tongue very hard during sleep. I don't have a grinding issue, nor TMJ. Each day was worse and worse until I was exhausted and piling into the tub every night with a fever, taking at least 4 ibuprofen a day and going to bed early. Then it hit me on 11.30.10 that I was basically poisoning myself with all the sugar, dough and yeast I had worked so hard to eliminate. I immediately cut it out and looked up EC to see what to do about my sore tongue. Someone mentioned oil pulling in that thread so I was intrigued, then impressed, and finally convinced after what I was reading.

Called my husband and told him to get me a fresh bottle of sesame oil, caught the bus and came home. I couldn't wait until morning to try the oil. It so happened as well, that a cold sore came out on my upper right lip and I was in even MORE pain on the entire right side of my head, neck and back.. I was miserable. Since 12.1.10, I have been using just under a full tablespoon of the sesame oil every morning, making it to 15 minutes but wishing I had more time to do it longer. I sometimes want to do it right before dinner, too. It freshens my mouth and I feel I taste foods better. I follow by a bit of baking soda on my brush and using warm water, brush my teeth normally but without toothpaste. I will use the toothpaste at night just.. Because, I guess.. I like the taste of the sesame and the sensation I get after I spit it out is that I've just eaten a really oily peanut butter cookie - it tastes great to me! Here are my observations and benefits so far:

1 - I have not had to blow my nose for the past 11 days though I've had fevers, pain and what others would think is the flu, but I knew was only stress from my pains. This is huge for me. I would always have to clear my sinuses in the shower upon rising. No more.. And I don't have to do it throughout the day!! I walk to the bus, walk through town and walk to catch the bus every day so I'm pretty active and fit, but I usually have to fight some kind of nasaly thing in the winter -> not at the present time, however, and I am thrilled! .. Amazed, really.

2 - My pains in my left jaw, teeth and tongue stopped and have not been affecting me at all since 12. 1. 10. I am floored at this. It is highly interesting to me that my 'spongy, ' 'bad' teeth are now tighter and feeling like they like being in me for the first time in my life! I have fillings in nearly every tooth and have to do what I can to preserve them because I have those boney growths from my lower jaw into my mouth that prevent me from just getting dentures... Which I don't want, either. I usually had to have 2 glasses of Cabernet every night to get rid of the pain so I could sleep - or a couple ibuprofen. No more.. At present. My teeth feel fresh and tight, happy and content, no throbbing or stabbing pains alerting me to "DO SOMETHING! DO SOMETHING NOW!! ".

3 - My breath is not so bad now.. I also don't 'crave' the floury, doughy things that I was, nor does sugar appeal to me as much. I even like cold oatmeal without sugar on it, now... This is weird.

4 - I love red wine but hate the stains on my teeth. For some strange reason, the past week or more, I've noticed that I can drink the wine and my teeth don't have a dark red cast to them. They're staying whiter while I have the wine! I don't know why that is, but I guess it has been helping my enamel? I get a tiny bit of red in between my teeth but nothing at all of the dark, scary colors they were before I started pulling. I will keep writing to speak of more benefits as I go on with this. It's winter here and my office staff is prone to sickness a LOT and I choose to not catch those things so I want to see how this helps me. I am so grateful for finding this information that I tell a lot of people and post it to my Facebook to get them to try it."

02/09/2011: Spb from New York replies: "I have been oil pulling with extra virgin coconut oil for a month now. I suffer from Candida and the "die off" was pretty bad at first. I was tired and sleepy and the headaches were pretty unbearable. As a result I slowed down the process and only pulled oil once a day as opposed to twice a day. I also swallowed a teaspoon of coconut oil three times a day. Both the oil pulling and ingesting the coconut oil has worked wonders for me. So much so, that I actually stopped the process for a few days.

Once I stopped OP I noticed that my cravings for sugar returned, my symptoms of Candida returned, and the weight that I had initially lost started to come back. Basically, all of the benefits of coconut oil that I was experiencing (appetite control, weight loss, hormonal balance increased energy, better sleeping habits and yeast control) were all disappearing within a few days of stopping the process. Today, I started the process again and I'm feeling so much better. My sinuses are draining I am experiencing some mild "die off". Now, that I worked with oil pulling and noticed the difference of working without it, I will keep oil pulling as part of my daily routine.

I also plan to fast for 30 days of Lent on coconut oil. hopefully I won't experience any adverse effects of doing so."

03/13/2011: Sara from London, Uk replies: "I tried OP first time yesterday for a tooth abscess. I did it first thing in the morning with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, I had a dull head ache which I took it to be due to lack of sleep. Later on in the afternoon I tried OP again with Sunflower oil, but this time I felt really sick. I was dizzy and had a slight headache, my heart was racing for a little while, my spleen hurt and so did my lower back. Later in the evening I had a sore throat and earache. I woke up fine this morning, however I am afraid to do it again. I think perhaps I should've done it just once... Any suggestions on how to avoid feeling so bad afterwards? And is it always going to be like this? Thanks..."

I was fortunate to find out about Dr Karach's oil pulling therapy over 16 years ago, and my objective was to improve my immune system, as a preventative. And it certainly has done so, for example, the number of colds has gone down a lot. Plus, my digestion has improved very much. Also, I can go on for more hours without feeling the need to eat.

I mostly use sesame oil, peanut oil, and sunflower oil: Once per day, one table spoon in the morning, before breakfast, 5-7 days a week. I have found that it's very important to rinse the oral cavity and tonge with baking soda/salt in warm water, and brush all of the same area - including the tongue, after applying just a little baking soda and salt on the toothbrush.

Basically, my opinion is that oil pulling is one of the very best ways to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities, and that includes detoxification. 15-20 minutes in the morning of oil pulling regularly, while taking a shower or shaving or ... - is one of the wisest things we could to, healthwise.

Better But With Side Effects

I have been oil pulling with sesame oil and have notice great improvements in the health of my gum and the teeth becoming whiter.

The only problem I have is the side effects which includes Blocked nose which is really annoying and I have to use decongestant to clear it up and feeling lethargic and weak. Although I have been doing it for many weeks but I stopped for a while and when I started again I am getting the same symptoms.

Some times I do OP for more than 20 minutes or even 30 minutes, and I wonder could this be the reason for feeling ill.

I read somewhere that you should detox with ACV for a week or two before beginning. I drink tons of water each day, more like a gallon or more. I started adding ACV to my water and my queestion is, is there a limit to the amount of ACV that I can have each day and still be healthy? i'm trying to begin a habit of putting in a tablespoon per 24oz. and if it is ok for me to have that much is it ok that I am doing the oil pulling at the same time? Is there a limit to ACV while oil pulling?

I have just started oil pulling in a bid to help my gum disease. I tried olive oil 1T for the first time as that was all I had. I went out and bought some avacado oil with lemon as I thought that would taste a little better. It does.

I am currently using 1/2 a TBSP as I find it hard to keep in a whole TBSP due to loads of saliva.

I will update regarding my gum disease when I have visited the Periodontist in July.

I have however noticed the following: the bags under my eyes have flattened down considerably and strangely enough my sinus's cleared so well - I was not even aware how congested I was until they cleared. Will keep you updated.

It's been 3 weeks since I had 5 implants with bone grafts installed and I am healing fast. It looks as though I will be able to get my crowns 2 months sooner. After the implant surgery I waited 2 days and then I started my oil pull with 1 tablespoon of black seed cold-pressed oil (black cumin seed oil) for 20 minutes each morning. I could feel mucus coming down the back of my throat and would have to spit. I've used other oils, sesame seed, olive, and safflower oils and I like the black cumin seed the best.

Blend of Oils

Posted by Murray (Melbourne, Australia) on 03/29/2013

Research indicates that Sesame and Sunflower oils are the best two for OP. I also read that Sesame Sesame seed oil is absorbed quickly and penetrates through the tissues to the very marrow of the bone. It is said to enter into the blood stream through the capillaries and circulates. The liver does not sweep sesame seed oil molecules from the blood, accepting those molecules as friendly. As I am wanting healing for a chronic form of leukemia this circulation to the bone marrow is potentially beneficial. The challenge is this: When I OP with Sunflower oil for 20 minutes it turns white but not when I OP with Sesame oil. I therefore tried a 50/50 blend of Sunflower/Sesame oils for 20 minutes and it DID turn white. My question: Is there benefits from blending the two oils? Will I get the benefits to my bone marrow from the Sesame oil if it is blended with Sunflower oil? Are there dangers in blending these two particular oils or things I should be aware of? Thanks in advance :-)

Warning

Canola Oil Should not be used for Oil Pulling. Canola Oil is not a natural oil. It is a genetically modified version of Rape Seed Oil. I would not recommend using it for oil pulling or cooking. Research shows it has a tendency to leave scaring on your heart after continued use.

Also, do not use peanut oil. I was told when I first started pulling not to use it because of the mold it develops after it is picked.

I would not suggest using canola oil for op or anything period! I was getting constant headaches and congestion and awakening sick and sore and finally pin pointed it to ingesting canola oil, (not OP). In fact, OP with sesame oil was the only thing that would help with the headache. If your feeling icky and dont know why, try eliminating canola oil. This is not easy as they put it in near everything, including so called health food. But once I stopped ingesting it I felt sooo much better. Its one nasty oil, not meant for man nor beast!

Canola is a modified version of rape. I don't know if it was done by cross breeding or by GMO but it was done to reduce the acidity of the oil as the acidic rapeseed oil was considered to be unhealthy. I use grape seed oil for all my cooking as it has zero cholesterol. I am 54 and have "the blood pressure of a healthy 150 pound 18 year old" at 330 lbs.. Canola is genetically modiied in the same way your prized begonias would be. It was created using traditional crossbreeding techniques and is no more superscience than bananas are-by the way, look up the Gros Michel die off an then the current crisis with the Calabash.

Canola was bred to remove the toxins that at the time would be deadly. As it now stands, the presence of those chemicals is laughable. Canola oil is both cheap and healthy when compared to most other oils and can be considered the poor mans extra virgin olive oil. Get your facts straight.

No canola oil is not at all healthy. It is one of the main causes of diabetes. When using canola oil it takes 6 months to undo the damage from 1 serving of this nasty oil. It places an artificial fat wall around your cells walls that disrupt the electrical balance of your cells. This fat wall then does not allow glucose to properly penetrate. This knocks your pancreatic cells out of whack which produce Insulin and causes blood sugar imbalance. You can fix this in about 6 months if you cut out all canola oil as well as all margirin and vegetable oil. Buy a bottle of cold pressed Flaxseed oil and a bag of ground flaxseed. The ground flaxseed has to be used as soon as its introduced to the air because it goes rancid very quick. The flaxseed oil must have the top secured at all times and kept away from heat and light. Mix 1 table spoon with 2 tablespoons of 4% milkfat cottage cheese. Or you can double the amount depending on how hungry you are. Mix very well. Take this mixture and add in 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed. Mix well and you can optionaly add cinnamon for blood sugar balancing(it mimmicks insulin) and apricott or organic fruit of your choice. Eat this 3 times per day. This diet is known as the budwig diet and it reverses diabetes as well as cancer. Avoid taking vitamin C when using this diet at least 3 hours before or after eating. The flaxseed oil mixes with the fat of the cottage cheese in a way that makes it become water soluble. The oil then can bypass the liver and directly bring oxygenation to your cells and organs through your blood stream. Your diabetes will be reversed within 6 months or less if you eliminate all bad fats especialy canola, margerin, and vegetable oils. Also if you can get organic cottage cheese that is the prefered type to use. God bless and good luck to everyone. Sending light and love out to all that read this!!!!!!!!!!

Reply to Douglas, MD: I found your comments very valuable, especially re:diabetes. To overcome the ill effects of using canola oil, you recomended following the Budwig Protocol. You mention mixing flaxseed oil with 4% min., milk fat content cottage cheese; but my researching of the Budwig Protocol shows that lower milkfat content cottage cheese is optimum (eg, 2% fat content cottage cheese or Quark). The lower fat content cheeses allow the flaxseed oil to become more water-soluble, enabling it to more easily enter the body cells.

Canola Oil should be strictly avoided- its ALL genetically modified, meaning genes from differing species are artificially added to the plant genetic reproduction... nothing to do with traditional agricultural genetic breeding (ex, begonias or apples)! The name itself is short for Canada Oil, and it is a modern agricultural product, not a centuries-old traditional food that has withstood the test of time in human nutrition.

Transgenic modifications were created for the sole purpose of a few corporations owning patent rights to our food supply, no matter how much they declare they are "feeding the world" and helping our meet out outrageous population needs. It's all political and economic rhetoric to increase their profit margins and corporate survival. Very little unbiased research has been PUBLISHED, meaning most scientific research on the topic is contaminated with economic agendas.

Human's have farmed for how long without the help of Monsanto/ DuPont? And now those companies own the game!

Google "Institute for Responsible Technology" to get a list of documentaries that will change your life regarding the topic (plus a host of powerpoint slides showing GMO food health implication in animal studies). Mercola.com is another good resource. Educate yourself about the health impacts of GM foods and agriculture, and don't buy into big agribusiness' political campaigns!

The best step forward is to have manditory labeling of GMO's on our food labels, so we can have personal soverignty (right to choose), and we can pay attention to what we are REALLY eating.

If avoiding GM foods improves a person's health, then so be it! If not, then we can research with a new hypothesis! This is the scientific method, currently being denied to the American Public due to corporate manipulation.

Any time I am force-fed information that is convenient to corporations or corporately-owned governments (*cough*), I ask myself "who is profiting off this information?"

Blessings to the Earth Clinic community... people's power is in learning and educating themselves!

It is my understanding that genetically modified means roundup is infused into the seeds to kill insects to protect the plant. This is the reason bees are dying. And this is the reason that wheat and corn are so dangerous to eat. And this is the reason some countries have outlawed Roundup. Farmers flood their wheat fields with roundup to create a stronger crop to make more money which is wiping out the bee population. Without bees, we have no food. It's a scary situation. Genetically modified is a misnomer.

GMO involves lab insertion of unnatural genetic material into the 'host' seed or animal - In the early stages of this experimentation, news articles were full concern from chefs about the prospect of people with shrimp allergies dropping dead in their restaurants due to the insertion of shrimp genes into tomatoes. They wanted labeling. Labs create 'Roundup-ready" soy which will tolerate overdosing of Glyphosphates. Same with BT corn - able to kill the borer, and also'ready' to tolerate incredible overpoisoning with chemicals. But people then eat of this stuff. And the evidence continues to mount about the deleterious effects of eating these foodlike substances.

But GMO experiments went way beyond that. By now you may have read about their implanting of human genes into wheat, spider genes into goats, etc.

Anyone who still believes the industry's marketing hype about GMOs being no different from products of 'natural selection' has not done their own research.

I have been doing oil pulling now for about a week but not consistently. My mouth had a sore in the roof of it and my gums were very sensitive and started bleeding. They bled a little more once i started OP but now it's completely gone and not much bleeding. My husband recently started it a few days ago. We have been using canola oil but i will get the sesame or sunflower oil because it seems to have a better result based on the testimonials i read. The castor bean is poisonous, I used to use castor bean plants around my garden to repel gophers and moles until they were the accidental cause of death of a neighbors puppy... I know this is a few years old but figured I would share so others who are exploring don't get misinformed. Castor oil is not poisonous. The only part of the plant that is toxic is the hull of the castor bean. It contains ricin. When removed, the danger is also removed. If you have a bottle that says for "external use only", it is because you have a low quality oil. They use a solvent called hexane to extract the oil because it is fast and cheap. This makes it unsuitable for consumption. Look for one that is organic and cold pressed.

After reading about oil pulling on this site, I decided to give it a try to see if it would stop the recurring boils I was having. The only cold-pressed oil I could find was castor oil, so that's what I've been using for two weeks. I am happy to report no more boils! I hope it stays that way! I know everyone says to use turmeric for boils, but I've tried it, and it didn't get rid of them. My four year old son also has recurring boils- he's had them ever since he was 1- I wonder if I can teach him how to OP.

The other marvelous result I just realized a couple days ago. I have no more body odour! This is amazing, b/c I had it bad. Tried everything to keep it under control- strong deoderants, natural ones, ACV, vodka, baking soda, essential oils... If this good result keeps up, I will OP the rest of my life!!

My teeth have felt very clean, but I can't say they've gotten any whiter. My teeth are have always been yellow, although I don't drink tea, coffee, wine or anything. I will try to find some sesame oil, maybe that will make a difference.

Amazing remedy, to be sure.

As a proven believer in Castor Oil, the other morning I awoke with a very sore gum in the vicinity of my right canine tooth. A look in the mirror indicated it was blood red, very tender, but no blood excreted when massaging. I generally 'oil' with Sesame Oil, but thought 'Why not try CO?'... Two 20 minute sessions [about 3-4 hours inbetween] and a session at bed time. I excreted all of the 'oiling', but let the CO coating remain in my mouth over night...the next morning it was 95% better; a repeat of the previous day's treatment produced a 100% recovery by the following evening...no redness, no tenderness and a normal, healthy gum..

Hello Susan, Most castor oil I have seen comes in 2, 4 or 6 ounce bottles which are clearly labeled for oral ingestion, so why would you need one that states food grade when it is clearly labeled to be taken orally for a laxative effect. I agree with the one who stated that the only adverse effect you would likely have with OP with castor oil would be a laxative effect and since you would be expectorating the castor oil it wouldn't be passing through the intestines whereby it causes the laxative action, therefore there should be no laxative effect as long as you don't swallow it.

For me the worst side effect would be smelling and tasting the castor oil because I despise both the smell and taste, even the ones sold as tasteless & odorless. I had too much of the castor oil forced down in childhood, because this was my parents answer to whatever ailed us. Must have been beneficial because most of my siblings are still alive and I am #8 of 10 children and the youngest who is 6 years my junior is now 70 years old. So if you can tolerate the smell & taste, just be sure to spit the used oil out and be sure to let us know what your opinion of it is. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

Here in Toronto there is a new store called Healthy Planet; they sell a great variety of natural and organic products, their prices are quite reasonably and I saw products that I have heard in my life!!!

You may want to give them a call: http://www.healthyplanetcanada.com

The best oil for oil-pulling is Mustard Oil.

I don't have an answer to your question, I would just like to know where you found this toothpaste. Thank you.

EC: Sounds like he made it: ECVO = extra virgin coconut oil!

I would continue to oil pull, but I would add a couple of drops of oil or oregano to the oil...this should clear the infection pretty quickly. Also try applying coconut oil to the area and then add a drop or two of the oregano oil as well. This will relieve any pain pretty fast and heal the area quickly as both oils are antiviral and antibacterial...keep apply this to the area throughout the day.

You are doing a good thing with the oil pulling...so don't stop. I also had amalgams for 1.5 years when I was o-pulling and did not have this reaction so I think you had a deep rooted infection that is surfacing which is good. The o-pulling will also attract and remove some of the mercury in your system.

Hope that helps.
