Can anyone tell me how to test for the real purity of BHT? I'd like to know that what I am using is really pure as it's supposed to be. Thanks!!
(Syracuse, New York)
Dear Imready, Only trained chemists with access to some very expensive devises can test the purity of BHT or any other compound. It is NOT something a do it yourselfer can do.
Aside from that: How have you been doing ? I know you had a serious issue with ammonia build up in your blood. Have you experienced any improvement or not with the BHT treatment ? ...Oscar
BHT Safe for Dogs
OK so BHT sounds like a miraculous drug! Is it ok to give to your sick dog?
BHT is used in dog food to prevent the oils and fats from becoming bad or rancid as described in the following article :
Here are two relevant quotes :
'Butylated hydroxytoluene is an additive often used in dog food to prevent the oils and the fats within the food from going bad. Spoiled dog food could potentially make your dog sick. So BHT is added to extend the life of the dog food as it sits on store shelves. BHT added to food preserves the shelf life of a manufactured dog food. Some dog owners ask themselves just how long they would like their dog's food to be preserved. '
'BHT is a known carcinogen and has been linked to cancer in lab animals.
As a responsible dog owner, reading labels and providing an affordable yet quality food for your dog is not difficult to do. Look for synthetic or chemical-sounding ingredients on dog food packaging. These ingredients will typically be low on the ingredient list because they are added only to preserve to food, giving it the ability to sit on a grocery store or pet store shelf longer. '
On the other hand, the following article says BHT is dangerous also :
Here is a relevant quote :
' It seems the same chemical qualities which make BHT an effective preservative can also make it a suspect for causing cancerous tumors.
Some evidence has suggested certain individuals may have difficulty breaking down the chemical in the liver — which is capable of causing notable behavioral changes.
BHT has been banned as a preservative in food in the countries of Japan, Romania, Sweden and Australia.
Perhaps it is worth asking your vet in order to get more perspective on the use of BHT for your dog.
For it to be used in pharmaceuticals and not considered a medication is for animal doses showing harm at high doses.
BHT Side Effects
I was massaging with BHT and oil and took a bath. About an hour later, I was sweating (especially palm and bottom of my feet) crying and anxious... I knew this was detox symptom. And then I remembered I just bought kosher collagen. and they say collagen reduce anxiety.
It did. I mean right away.
I will probably be easy on BHT. I used about half cup massaging my body. Obviously it was too much.
In trying BHT, I also figured that maybe I was dificient of collagen. No wonder I suffered arthrities in the past. Thank you all who posts here.
I appreciate your sharing. I will also update the progress..later. Good luck.everyone.
The heat of bathwater might have facilitated transport through your skin, or volatilized the BHT into vapor which you could have breathed in through your lungs. Lungs have an incredibly high surface area and can absorb things quite efficiently. This is why nebulizers are so popular for certain kinds of drug delivery.
Lung-related side effects of BHT are observed in mice. Their lungs are particularly sensitive. Although lung sensitivity is not seen in rats or other mammals, nobody has ever tried testing BHT as a vapor delivered via warm humid air in a bathtub where the air might have been stratified to maximize lung absorption.
I'm not clear from your post whether you used a half-cup of BHT or a half-cup of BHT dissolved in oil. A half-cup of pure molten BHT would be about 100 grams of BHT, of which 3% absorption could cause temporary liver toxicity and possibly even hallucinations. Could you clarify this for me?
I use BHT vapor to preserve my coffee, and I used it many decades ago to preserve marijuana. This is written up in my BHT book, the link is posted in an earlier posting.
BHT Vs Monolaurin
Monolaurin - a Safer Treatment Than BHT for Lipid Coated Viruses?
I am giving this monolaurin my attention. I just recently posted a discussion about how I think [ do NOT know with certainty ] BHT works to destroy the lipid coatings of lipid coated viruses.
If I am right about that [ a BIG if ], it does follow that the same forces I discussed would be at work with the monolaurin.
Think of it this way: BHT and its metabolites are like a granular shaped molecule rapidly spinning about rapidly and grinding through lipid coatings.
Monolaurin is a rod like molecular entity rapidly teeter tottering and spinning about in these same lipid coatings. A different shape doing the same thing. Tearing apart said lipid coatings.
Both BHT and monolaurin are lipid seekers and for the same reasons. Relatively [ compared to water ] nonpolar entities. Whereas water is VERY dipolar. Everything is relative.
What is so very different about monolaurin compared to other lipids? It is a zig zagged but straight line overall. A rod like shape. Most lipids have a head group that is dipolar and two or three so called tail groups.
Also and importantly monolaurin`s dipolar head group is 6 atoms long. significantly longer than most lipids with two [ O-H ] hydroxy groups. As I explained in my earlier posting: When an oxygen atom is bonded to a hydrogen atom the [ O-H ] group has partial electric charges that compel it to move about very rapidly.
And monolaurin is a component of human mother`s milk.
I do NOT know about dosages of monolaurin. Some feedback from those who do would be appreciated by me.
Jay, are you out there ? Any who knows about monolaurin dosages please reply. Oscar
I don't know if this is what you are asking, but my capsules of monolaurin contain 600mg of monolaurin and 7.5mg of inosine. The directions say to take one or two capsules with meals or as directed by a physician.
Who else but you could figure out this inter-relationship between these two supplements and save so many lives? I know you like to downplay your education, but your brilliant mind speaks for itself. If the medical community doesn't recognize your contributions, at least take comfort in knowing the Earth Clinic family DOES, and we know the importance and healing power of your research and appreciate all your efforts! Take care and may God bless you for all you do for others.
(Syracuse, New York)
Dear Rsw [ Uniontown, Ohio ]. Thank you for responding. The manufacture`s recommended dosage does seem a good way to go with that what is a mixture. 600mg of monolaurin with 7.5mg of inosine. Is this a tablet or an oil filled capsule ?There must of been a reason for combing the two. I am totally new to this monolaurin stuff.
Again, the manufacturer`s recommended dosage seems a very good place to start. Thank you for helping out with this one Rsw, ...Oscar
I do not understand why monolaurin is not included in the list of products for use against covid. I have been taking 9gm per day for the last year. It strips the lipid envelope of viruses in much the same way as bht. I don't know if one is better than the other or not.
When I began taking it, the Herx reaction was brutal, and I had to stop. After I recovered, I re-started, but increased the daily amount more slowly. I still had a bad reaction. Finally, I took just one pellet and increased by one pellet per day, until I reached the 9mg level. That is three scoops of the brand I use. I choose to work up to that amount simply because it seems to be the maximum dose among people who use it.
I've been seeing great improvement in using bht (lysine, olive leaf, blk cummin seed) to fight off a lifetime battle with the pox camilion. Probably originated with the smallpox vaccination in childhood. They called the blisters sun poisoning and then cold sores.
Recently I've been using castor oil drops in my eyes with great results for the ocular nerve, but I'm really wanting to put some bht into the castor oil for my eyedrops. I'm not finding any reference to be sure it's a safe bet. Can anyone shed some light on the prospect? Most kindly, Joy
For Cold Sores, try BHT.. butyl hydroxy toluene..... Has to be mixed with a fat of some kind to break it down and have it stored in the lymphs it worked for me at the first signs and in less than a day, next day I had the slightest of a skin scab where the blister was then gone my dose was 1/8 teaspoon on a piece of buttered toast twice a day the tingling cold sore stopped tingling within a few hours... BTH is used for the preservation of food stuffs and other more exotic things. Let me know if you try it and if it works for you please.
Colds, Flu, Viruses
Oscar's recent BHT post on anti-aging reminded me that I forgot to write in about BHT for viruses. I started to get a cold/flu/something twice over the past 6 months. Both times I took just 1/2 capsule of 350 mg BHT in a half glass of water. By the next day I was fine, no symptoms. Awesome. Thank you, Oscar!
Hi Oscar, Is it OK to take a coconut oil capsule instead of the tbsp of it? Thanks!
(Syracuse, New York)
Dear Carol from Clearwater, In my opinion it is NOT advisable to be using oil capsules of any type. There is the rancidity issue. All vegatable oils tend to chemically react over time. For instance the oils can react with whatever the capsule is made of.
Also it is important NOT to take the BHT at the same time as any oil. People achieving the best results with the BHT treatment take it with a gulp of water on an empty stomach.
I use olive oil and I mix one capsule of BHT in with the bottle oil to prevent rancidity. I do the same with any cooking oil I use. This prevention of rancidity is one of the original purposes BHT was used for. BHT is an excellent food preservative. That is what BHT is officially approved of for by the FDA....Oscar
Carol, coconut oil is one of the most stable of oils. It is mostly saturated oil (the least peroxidizable oil there is), with some mono-unsaturated oil (pretty stable), and about 2% di-unsaturated (more reactive, but less than tri- tetra- and penta-unsaturated oils). So if you want oil in a capsule, coconut oil is a good choice. But coconut oil does not have a strong taste that most people need to hide.
Any oil can be poorly protected and go rancid over time. You can somewhat protect yourself from this by taste-testing the oil in the capsule. The first taste test is to puncture the capsule with a knife or the tip of a fork prong, squeeze the oil onto your tongue, and slide it back to the rear-center of your tongue. This is where the rancidity taste buds are located.
The second taste test involves examining your gag reflex. Rancid tastes trigger a gag reflex, so you can pay special attention to your gag reflex in response to brushing your teeth with the squeezed-out oil. If there is no aggravation of your gag reflex, and you cannot taste acridity, the oil is relatively safe.
I hope this helps.
Hi everyone, I was diagnosed with HSV1 oral and genital just last month. My first outbreak was terrible and Valtrex (valacyclovir) had side effects which I would really rather avoid. thats why i've have been frantically searching the internet for things that could help and stumbled on this group through earthclinic.
its been 2 weeks since i've been off valtrex but i'm still tingling in my face and genital area. Scarily, I also have tingles along my spine and behind my eyes. I feel I need to be more proactive and have decided to try BHT as my best bet.
i'm an asian female, 5'4 and 110 lbs. I want to take BHT but I don't know how to go about purchasing it (i live in the Philippines) and am also concerned because I read (from Oscar's comments) that skinny people are more prone to neural side effects. well I am definitely skinny.
currently I am taking Lysine, ginger and garlic extracts and vitamins A, B complex, C and E.
someone please advise.
(Syracuse, New York)
Dear Danny Lee, Phillipines, I just posted this message over at the BHT CURES group and this answer is the same for your concerns:
I started a new topic posting to try and minimize confusion in this group. Now from what you have stated you are a thin person who weighs 110 pounds. You have both genital and oral herpes. The good news for you is: The different herpes viruses are the most thoroughly investigated of all the viruses when it comes to BHT. BHT is a proven and effective treatment for both oral and genital herpes. You are concerned about adverse side effects and need to be. Start out with small doses of BHT. Start with 100mg of BHT per day and see how you feel with that. That may very well be all you need to deal with your herpes infections. If that does not work you can always take more and if adverse effects are experienced you can always take less of the BHT. Now this BHT is sold by a number of different online retailers. It can be purchased in bulk or in measured capsules. The measured capsules come in 200mg to 350mg capsules. These capsules are easy to pull apart to get a smaller dosage. You will need measuring spoons. They come in sets that include fractions of a teaspoon. You want to start with the 1/16th of a teaspoon measurement. That is 1/16th of a teaspoon. 1/16th of a teaspoon is somewhat less than 200mg of BHT. So use about one half of that. If you can find a 1/32 of a teaspoon measuring device that would be better yet. That should be about 100mg of BHT.
Now the people reporting the best results take the BHT on an empty stomach with a gulp of water. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating. You can always take more of the BHT as time goes by if you wish to if no adverse effects are experienced. Most people have no adverse effects at the doses I am discussing with you. Also, for thin people such as you: Taking one tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil may be helpful. This oil should be taken at least 2 hours after taking the BHT. Do NOT take the oil and the BHT at the same time. Doing so screws up the treatment. If you have questions I will do the best I can to answer them... Oscar
Also, as far as I know the BHT is available online in the Phillipines through the mail. I think there is at least one other person who lives in the Phillipines and has been able to purchase the BHT online through the mail with no problem. Trying to help, Oscar
(Syracuse, New York)
Dear Rozamora from Bangkok, Yes the BHT has been shown to be an effective treatment for hepatitis B for at least some people. I am one of those people and tablcorn over at the BHT CURES GROUP is another. And I have also read that BHT is in some way related to vitamin E.
I can assure you the two compounds are very different and that BHT is far better than vitamin E as an average lifespan extender.
BHT showed an average lifespan increase of between 22% and 31%. Vitanin E showed NO increase in average lifespans. There is this tert-butyl effect and other properties BHT has that other compounds do NOT. You can check out the BHT CURES GROUP if you wish to here:
Oscar, I tried BHT two years ago and can't remember what I was taking at the time but do remember I was taking St. John's Wort, (hypericin?) which I'm not taking now. Now I am taking Vitamin C, Cayenne pepper, Bioflavonoids, Vit D3, Vit E, Vit B complex, Vit B12, Astaxanthin, Fish Oil and Armour Thyroid.
I take echinacea when I have an outbreak.
As I mentioned I did talk with Stephen Fowkes two years ago when I had the problem and he told me to stay on it and the reaction would clear up, but the reaction was so bad that I didn't want to take a chance he could be wrong and get myself in worse condition.
I really do want to try BHT again as I have quite a problem with herpes but am always responsive to natural remedies and believe it would probably work for me.
I so appreciate the time you are taking to answer questions.
(Syracuse, New York)
Dear Matalina from Spartanburg, You stated you had problems with BHT in the past. So if you choose to give it a try again do so with caution. Here is what I consider the standard BHT treatment based on the feedback available:
The BHT treatment is:
> > > > > 200mg to 350mg of BHT taken once or twice a day with water on an empty stomach. The dosage varies for each person. Generally, the more you weigh the more you need and the less you weigh the less you need or desire. Age is also a factor. People around age 60 have a harder time tolerating higher dosages.
> > > > > Supplements that work well with BHT are:
> > > > > 1. A generic multivitamin and mineral supplement.
> > > > > 2. Vitamin B12 in a dosage of 1mg [ milligrams ] which is the same as 1, 000mcg [ micrograms ] per day.
> > > > > 3. Vitamin C in a daily dosage of 500mg to 1, 000mg per day.
> > > > > 4. One vitamin B complex pill per day.
> > > > > 5. The lipid monolaurin. Not sure of dosage.
> > > > > 6. The herb chianca piedra has helped some people. Not sure about dosage.
> > > > > 7. Sodium selenite in a dosage of 50 [ micrograms ] a day.
> > > > > Supplements to avoid:
> > > > >
> > > > > 1. Milk thistle and it`s extracts. It reacts with BHT in a way that degrades the treatment.
> > > > > 2. Vitamin E supplements. Yes you need some vitamin E. But vitamin E supplements were proven to ENHANCE hepatitis C`s virons ability to replicate and therefore vitamin E supplements should be avoided.
> > > > > 3. Any and all other supplements should be avoided until and unless I see evidence they work well with the BHT treatment.
These are MY recommendations....Oscar
So stop taking the fish oil, vitamin E supplemennts, and all of those other things that are not on my short list of supplements that work well with BHT.
Why not at least give that a try ? If it does not work you can always go back to that other stuff. I am very much hoping the keep simple method works as well for you as it has for many others....Oscar
Yes. I have received reports from people for BHT efficacy for both hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Hepatitis A and E are reported to be non-lipid-enveloped viruses.
I have not ever had any reports about HepD or HepE, but HepD is a lipid-enveloped virus.
This is to Oscar from Syracuse, New York: I would like to ask a question, I have plan to use BHT for the GW, but the problem is I can't find BHT capsules in my country. But I can get access to the bulk of BHT like pounds of it... funny!
Is there a simple way of measuring it like for 250 mg or 350 mg, for instance using fraction of teaspoon or so? Thanks for helping.
(Syracuse, New York)
Dear Dimahfromme, If you live in the USA the measured capsules of BHT should be available. But I will answer your question: 1/8th of a TEASPOON of BHT = about 350mg of BHT. Now for all those buying BHT in bulk you NEED an accurate measuring device. Here is one company that sells them and I am sure there are others. Here is a link one such company: http://fantes.com/measuring-spoons.html
(Los Angeles, Ca)
Hepatitis B as it was with C? I already bought a bottle of 250mg 500 capsules from Amazon.com. How much dosage/capsule(s) should I take per day. How long before I can get the undetectable results? Also, I brew my own Olive Leaf Extract water which also is effective against the virus, can I take BHT and push it down with OLE instead of regular water or does it really have to be water? Also, can I drink OLE right after BHT or do I have to wait an hour? Thanks for the feedback.
HI Oscar! I have a couple of issues with taking the BHT, not serious but maybe they should be addressed for those of us who need the know if anyone can answer them.
I have been wondering about the one hour before or after eating upon taking the BHT. I have started to wait longer because I have a slow digestive system. I know this because my pain meds do not work well until two hours after I eat. So for some of us we have to extend that time period from one hour to two and a half hours. So I find it best to take it around 3-4pm while I am having my afternoon coffee. I know it is working because I feel more like my old self before I started the pegetron therapy. I find I have more energy now and don't tire as easy as I used to. The thing is since I have started taking it with coffee I am getting high anxiety in my chest the next morning around 7am. I can deal with it as I know what is happening so I use acupressure on my wrist which helps to calm me enough to get another hours sleep. We shall see how long this keeps up as I only take one 350mg cap in the afternoon. Taking a second one makes me dizzy while I am in bed, which brings me to my second issue.
I read somewhere that it stays in your system for 14 days. So taking 350mg x 14 = 4900mg or 490 grams in the body before it starts to flush it. This does not alarm me but does beg the question about saturation of the body. So taking two a day would double this to near 1000 grams. I know that when I was on the pegetron my doctor told me it would take my body 5 years to flush it all out as it is stored in the fat cells. I have to believe he was right because it took 5 years to feel normal again and escape the foggy brain syndrome. Now I feel sharper and my memory is improving. I am anxiously awaiting my next ALT test numbers which will be done in a month or two. My numbers have been all over the place for the last 5 years because of the ibuprofen use I suppose. Now I take nearly none since starting the BHT. I have been on it now since 20/Jan12
I have joined the yahoo group bigmac68 but can't figure out how to post there. Posting here is so much easier.
Thanx, Art. 1a.

Dear Art from Vancouver, I very much understand and share your concerns about BHT therapy. This is why I always recommend that anyone trying this therapy come up with a dosage they are comfortable with. Start with a low dose and work up to no more than two 350mg capsules per day for most people. If that is too much take less. These capsules are easy to open up and you can split the dosage in half or less if you need to.
And yes, BHT and its metabolites do end up stored in fat tissues and other tissues also for up to two weeks. But this BHT is constantly being metabolized and excreted also. So you DO NOT end up with 2 weeks worth of BHT and it`s metabolites being accumilated in two weeks. The same is true for certain vitamins also. A general rule is that the water soluble vitamins such as vitamin C are quickly metabolized and work their way through a person`s body in a very few days and that the oil or fat soluable vitamins such as vitamin E take a week or two to work their way through a person`s system. BHT is similar to vitamin E in that way. I think this is a part of the answer as to why even low dose BHT therapy works. So find a dose you are comfortable with and stay with that. You want enough of what is the metabolites of BHT in your body to readily destroy these viral particles in your blood and inter-cellular fluids. You do not want more than what your body can safely handle and this does vary from person to person.
From the feedback available thin or lean people tend need less BHT and are those most prone to side effects. So find a dose you are comfortable with and stick with that dosage. It will work. It may take a bit longer and maybe it will not take any longer. Low dose BHT therapy worked for me and I weighed 175 poubds when I first started this treatment back in 1997. I was only taking one 200mg capsule of BHT per day. I was lean but not thin back then.
If you are having problems joining that group well I did also and I am a moderator there. I am not very computer savy, or smart and I eventually figured it out. Just keep trying. I had to change my yahoo name three times because I kept screwing up the process in some way I do not understand. Stay touch here in this forum.
And do join the group if you feel like it. You have to create a Yahoo acount to do so or one of the other similar accounts. There is NO fee. I do not understand it. If anyone out there does and can explain and help those who wish to that would be appreciated by me. That group is here: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BHTcures/
Checking in at day 47, I think, of BHT 350mg twice daily. I am not getting any blood work for another six weeks so I have no updated numbers to offer. Some days are better than others but as a whole I feel stronger and healthier week by week. I keep my fingers crossed every time I go to the bathroom hoping not to see dark urine or light stools. It's a bit of a roller coaster ride and I'm in no way convinced completely it's going to work, but it's hard to deny that something very positive is going on. My virals dropped almost 80% in the first 30 days and I feel better now than I did then. Hope it bodes well. Good luck to everyone. Thank you Oscar. Dave
For those who are interested in Hep C info, I saw this today on the LDN site. Although it will not be the answer for those who have the illness right now (and thank heavens for Oscar's wisdom there), it is on the horizon for others and possibly will lead to further I understanding of the disease and help for those afflicted now. FYI:

Thank you Dave from Wayne, NJ for your kind remarks and your very valuable feedback. It is only with such feedback that me or anyone else will be able to answer the important issues regarding the use of BHT to treat hepatitis C and other viral diseases. Issues such as what is an effective dose and what are the side effects that some experience.
Now my experience as I experienced it with the use of BHT to treat hepatis C is very much the same as yours. There were times I noticed my urine would at times appear darker than what is normal in those first 2 to 3 months of treatment. But after about 3 months of the BHT treatments my urine was and still is always normal.
It does take differing periods of time for the different people using the BHT treatment to have consistantly normal liver function. From my experience as time goes by any and all symptums dissappear within a very few months. I had a very diseased liver and you did also. Thank you for your updates Dave. With your feedback and that of others we WILL answer these questions and come up with some valid guide lines as to the use of BHT for hepatitis C and some other viral diseases also....Oscar
I was diagnosed with gw in Jan. And I keep going to the Dr. and getting them treated but they keep coming back. I read about bht and decided to order some and am waiting for its arrival. However, I am nervous about taking it. What dose should I start at? I am barely over 5 ft and weigh 165. I see talk about liver testing. Is that for the bht or something else? I don't want to hurt my liver but I want rid of these things!!!
(Syracuse, New York)
Well, the BHT seems to work very well for some people for genital warts and not very well for some others. This is not surprising because there are over 40 variants of HPV virus, the virus that causes these warts. The dose that seems to work best is 350mg of BHT taken twice a day. There is a long thread that discusses all this here in this forum here: https://www.earthclinic.com/remedies/BHT.html
Read what is said there and decide for yourself if you wish to try the BHT treatment....Oscar
I'd like to know from Oscar and Steve F.: For how long must one stay on BHT to get rid of EBV, Herpes? How can you test to see if it's gone?
Angie, you cannot get rid of lipid-enveloped viruses like herpes and EBV. They stay with you for the rest of your life. The average person has more herpes genomes in their body when they die than human genomes.
We live with viruses. Everybody lives with viruses all the time. Some people have flare-ups and others not. The trick is to change from somebody with flare-ups to somebody without flare ups. Some people have chronic viral load, and the trick is to make your virus dormant, so it just sits there, inactive.
So the answer to your question is that the switch from being troubled by viruses to not being troubled is not a matter of time. It's a matter of decreasing your viral susceptibility and encouraging viruses to become less virulent. BHT might help you do that. And vitamin A, selenium, sunlight, St. John's wort and hydrogen peroxide might help you as well.
The art of the matter is figuring out why each of use has viral susceptibility. For some, it could be estrogen dominance. For others, heavy metal toxicity. Leaky gut syndrome. Hypothyroidism. There are many ways that aerobic metabolism (energy production) can wane in us. Use of drugs, living in a toxic environment, eating the wrong foods, being unhappy, feeling helpless--it spans the gamut from the physiological to the psychological.
The Revici model of metabolic balance puts viral susceptibility at one extreme, either anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline dominance or catabolic-aerobic-acidic deficit. You can read about this in the BHT Book, a free PDF download from www.projectwellbeing.com/steve.
I'm pretty sure that Ayurvedic theory has its own constitutional types that pose increased and decreased susceptibility to viruses. Likely traditional Chinese medicine as well. Maybe somebody can also weigh in on homeopathic approaches to energy balance.
I have little expertise in Ayurveda and TCM. But can talk about BHT and other antiviral vitamins, minerals, nutrients, foods, etc. I hope this does not discourage you from trying to figure out why you have chronic EBV or periodic herpes flare-ups.
I cured a friend's herpes with lysine.
I don't know of any, but I'm pretty sure that some were using lysine for herpes reasons. Most lipid-encapsulated viruses are not as lysine responsive as herpes.
Oscar, I thought you might be interested in this study done with supplementing rats with both BHT and BHA, and absorbic acid and synthetic Vitamin E.
"ABSTRACT The purpose of this work was to determine the effects of two synthetic
antioxidants, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), dZ-o-tocopherol and ascorbic acid on the fatty liver and on the renal and cardiovascular systems of choline-deficient rats. Weanling and 6-week-old male rats were fed casein- peanut meal diets devoid of choline for 8 and 10 days, respectively. Survivors were fasted and then killed, and tissues collected for serum and liver lipid analyses and for morphologic assessment of tissue damage. Fatty liver, hemorrhagic kidneys and cardiovascular damage characteristic of choline deficiency were observed in deficient animals of both ages. However, BHA and BHT protected rats in both age groups from heart and aorta damage and also prevented renal damage in the 6-week-old group. Mortality was decreased by tocopherol, ascorbate and BHA and BHT, but most notably by the latter two. In weanling rats all additives increased serum lipids and all except ascorbate decreased liver lipids. In 6-week-old rats serum lipids varied, whereas liver lipids were increased by tocopherol and ascorbate and decreased by BHA and BHT. We conclude that tocopherol and BHA and BHT tend to decrease the effects of choline deficiency on the liver, renal and cardiovascular systems whereas ascorbate enhances them. Possible mechanisms for the various effects are discussed."

Dear Debbie from Melbourne, Thank you for posting this interesting study. Yes, it is long past the time when people need to be looking into the toxicity of BHT and start looking into the very substantial evidence that BHT is in fact good for you if taken in sensible dosages. There are very real reasons why those BHT dosed mice live on average between 22% and 31% longer than undosed mice and this study you posted is further evidence as to way this is so. I was not aware of that study and I do thank you for posting it.
I just popped a BHT capsule after reading that article. I am of an age where I am concerned about my heart and I also only have one kidney.
The heart and the kidneys are the organs discussed in this study and BHT is shown to significantly protect those organs from choline defficient damage. I do think this one of the benefits associated with the so called " tert-butyl effect ". That is what is so very different about BHT and BHA also when compared to other anti-oxidants including vitamin E....Oscar
Hi Oscar, no worries. I have a question for you. I note that many people are saying their stools returned to normal color after taking the BHT. My son, who is 4 is having pale(ish) colored stools so he is obviously not digesting fats properly. I was wondering if you think it would be beneficial for him to be on some BHT? He is about 20 kgs. If you think it would be beneficial for him what dosage would I try him on?

... And this BHT just might be an excellent adjunct to the polyunsaturated fats becoming "peroxidised" by free radicals thus decreasing cell lifespan and increasing cancer risk. Again I refuse the "avoidance" stance and thereby loose the benefits of health oils like Evening Primrose, Borage, Flax, Hemp, Sun and Safflower. One can add the contents of x caps in x container of oil or simply take an oral dose 1x day to protect the healthy omega 3's, 6's as well as 9's in the diet; and this also allows the body to eat protein rich (particularly)red meats at least once or twice per week without an inflammatory response (i can actually notice the rise in inflammation the day after eating a beef hamburger the night before). I wouldn't attempt replacing Vit-E, A or the Carotenoids with BHT but I would try to find that perfect minimal daily dosage of each/all.
Dear timh, you are definitely entitled to your opinion and but unless you can relate to this topic of hep c , you are otherwise clueless! I have tried bht and it has helped me more than milk thistle and other supplements that I have taken for my liver. I had blood work done from 2 different places and my Labs came back normal liver function after taking bht for 1 month. Dear Debbie from Melbourne, Listen, I have no way of knowing what is causing your Son`s digestive problems. Has he been dignosed with one of the hepatitis viruses? I am NOT a doctor. How long has your Son been having trouble with his digestion? Such problems can be the result of many different conditions and need to be addressed or at least diagnosed by a real doctor. Very often young children do grow out of such conditions. There are so many childhood diseases or conditions and very often young children do grow out of them. He needs to be seen by a qualified pediatrician to get a valid diagnoses as to what is wrong with him if this condition persists....Oscar
BHT flu update: Used the BHT remedy about twice a year since I posted in 2017. It has worked each time and I never got sick. Used just one dose per day, two days maximum. Still my favorite flu remedy!
