Effective Natural Remedies for Enlarged Prostate Relief

| Modified on May 21, 2024

An enlarged prostate, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition affecting men, especially as they age. While medical treatments are available, many are turning to natural remedies for enlarged prostate relief. This article explores various natural strategies that can support prostate health and alleviate BPH symptoms.

What Is Prostatitis?

An inflamed or swollen prostate is known as prostatitis; it is common for the prostate gland to become enlarged as a man ages. The medical term for this condition is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or benign prostatic hypertrophy. As cells increase, they form large nodules that can compress the urethra, obstructing the flow of urine and causing pain. The prostate gland doesn't usually cause problems until later in life - it rarely causes symptoms before age 40. However, more than 50% of men in their sixties and as many as 90% in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

Prostatitis can also occur due to bacterial infection; it is possible for bacteria carried in the urine to leak into the prostate. While there is no evidence that an enlarged prostate can lead to prostate cancer, an enlarged prostate can overproduce the same proteins used to screen for prostate cancer.

Natural Remedies for an Enlarged Prostate

Apple Cider Vinegar

attention as a home remedy for various conditions, including an enlarged prostate. ACV is believed to help due to its anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial in reducing the symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The theory is that the anti-inflammatory effect of ACV could help lessen the swelling of the prostate, thereby alleviating discomfort and improving urinary flow.

In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, apple cider vinegar is known for its antioxidant effects. These antioxidants can help to combat oxidative stress in the body, which is a factor in many chronic conditions, including prostate issues. Some proponents also believe that the acetic acid in ACV can help detoxify the body and support overall urinary health.

Standard Dosage

A standard recommendation for ACV is 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 ml) per day, mixed in a large glass of water. It's advised to start with a smaller dose and gradually increase it to assess tolerance.

Cayenne pepper, known for its spicy flavor, is also considered beneficial in managing symptoms of an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The active component in cayenne pepper, capsaicin, is thought to play a critical role in its therapeutic effects. Capsaicin is known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties, which can be particularly beneficial for reducing the inflammation associated with an enlarged prostate. This reduction in inflammation can potentially alleviate symptoms like urinary frequency, urgency, and discomfort.

Furthermore, cayenne pepper is believed to improve blood circulation. Enhanced circulation can aid in efficiently delivering nutrients and oxygen to the prostate gland, possibly promoting better overall prostate health. Additionally, some studies suggest that capsaicin has properties that may help reduce prostate cell proliferation, a key factor in the development of BPH.

Standard Dosage

There is no specific recommended dose for cayenne pepper in the context of BPH. In general culinary use, a pinch to a quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder is commonly used in cooking. As a supplement, following the manufacturer's dosage instructions is essential.

Precautions: Cayenne pepper may cause gastrointestinal irritation in some individuals, especially in high doses. It's also a blood thinner and may interact with blood-thinning medications.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is one of the most well-known herbs for prostate health. Studies suggest it can help reduce urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.

Derived from the bark of the African plum tree, pygeum has been used traditionally for urinary health and is gaining popularity for BPH symptom relief.

Stinging Nettle

Often used with other herbs, stinging nettle can help alleviate lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH.

Address Underlying Infection

Prostate Enlargement:

Here are some helpful insights (I hope helpful) on what might be happening relative to prostate problems.

Enlarged prostate might mean there is an infection in the prostate causing enlargement of the prostate, unrelated to cancer. The reports form various cancer studies would indicate that enlargement (BPH) does not mean there is there is cancer in the prostate.

There is more a likelihood that there is a yeast, bacterial or viral infection in the prostate causing the enlargement. But then the reaction upon learning of a BPH problem by typical health care providers is to get a needle biopsy (12 point biopsy) where 12 needles are shot through the rectum and into the prostate.

However, the infection rate is very high for such a procedure.

So there is a quandary about how to handle the issue. A regular medical approach would typically call for such a biopsy and also an MRI and then medication.

But for those wishing to take a more conservative approach, the postponement of the invasive procedures means one would be looking at natural means to reduced enlargement; use of beta sitosterol, saw palmetto, pumpkin seed and many other formulas might be first tried.

But the underlying problem of the possibility of a deep seated infection in the prostate will still not have been addressed. So often the anti inflammation problem will persist.

My suggestion is that any man suffering with BPH who is seeking out methods to deal with prostate enlargement not overlook the possibility of underlying infection.

There are some innovative methods of analysis available...Radio Wave Frequency techniques, Rife Technology and other possible avenues for determining if a yeast or bacteria or virus is causing the enlargement should be explored.

I'd appreciate any reader to comment on this issue of how to determine if an infection is present and how to deal with possible deep tissue this case a possible deep gland infection.

I have used colloidal silver over a long term in high quantity as well as Rife. So far in measuring inflammation, mine is much reduced. Deep bacteria infection appears to have been the cause and I think the Rife technology is the reason there is a reduction in infection and consequently a reduction in inflammation. Hence, I am becoming asymptomatic. Reduction in gland enlargement, however, can take a very long time to accomplish so patience is a virtue.

I have to avoid the known prostate inflammatory items such as coffee and chocolate.

D: It is becoming increasingly known that the regular or periodic use of Cranberry or D Mannose provides the necessary removal of pathogens in the U.T. that continually infect the prostate, resolving the issue of why so many conventional and alternative treatments weren't working.

Thank you for your article. I am a master of Applied Kinseiology through expertly applied muscle testing I literally"ask" the prostate gland specific questions or "challenges" to determine its exact condition and if negative can further determine the exact "fix" which is unique and different for every prostate gland.... Please don't misunderstand muscle testing it is an art and a SKILL that takes years to master. Without proper training and most important a tremendous amount of practical clinical experience/practice. Muscle testing is USELESS. Muscle testing properly applied is the most accurate diagnostic tool on the planet.

I use to sit or stand and have to wait till I started to urinate. my wife is also happier because my sex drive has increased. Regarding cranberry, lemon, ACV and BSM for Prostate

These juices are very acidic, and many people are put off from using them. Pity, as they are very effective for urinary, prostate, and many other problems.

Most users resort to loads of sugar to make them palatable, but that's a mistake. Sugar is nobody's friend. Cranberry cocktail is just loaded with sugar, which cancels the health benefits of the juice. You can find unsweetened straight cranberry juice at most stores.

So here's what I do. Dilute! I Have a 1 pint mug. Adding juice of a half a lemon, or a tablespoon of ACV or cranberry juice to a pint of water makes a pleasantly tart drink you can sip all day. If that's still too strong, dilute some more. You need the water anyhow.

Another problem cure is blackstrap molasses. Many find it too bitter. Again, dilute. For my coffee and many other uses, I cut it 50/50 with honey or maple syrup. Then it's delicious. Think ginger bread, or licorice candy. Part of their flavor comes from the BSM diluted with the other ingredients.

Don't miss out on the benefits of any of these powerful foods because you lack the imagination to find a way to like them.

Apple Cider Vinegar for prostate issues

Had been having slow urination on and off for a few years...nothing I thought serious... and not a fan of Doctors or drugs. When things got a little more in...slower and slower pee stream and having to get up multiple times each night...I then decided to find something natural. First eliminated Coffee and Alcohol (two cups a day and maybe a beer or two a week).

Found this awesome site and tried ACV when I felt bloated in lower abdomen. Took 2 Tbsps of ACV and within the hour noticed all the bloating was gone. I was thinking I may have had a bladder infection. Felt so much better though. So continued ACV 2 TBsp in the morning, then one after/before lunch, then one after dinner. Almost to the one month mark and things have continually improved. Only up maybe twice at night, pee stream is much stronger. Don't have the urge to pee all the time. I also gave up the little bit of sweets I was eating. I eat pretty healthy as it is...but this was an opportunity to go the distance. Also did a 3 day water fast which as seemed to increase my progress (only drank ACV or water...make sure you get some salt too.)

Bottom line....ACV seems to have been the catalyst for cleaning out...possibly bad bacteria/fungi/candida...but cleaning up my diet, especially sugars, is key in my view. Experiment always.

Apple Cider Vinegar remedy for BPH, prostatitis or enlarged prostate symptoms:

I hadn't heard of using Apple Cider Vinegar before reading it here and I'm so thankful! Thank you to everyone that posted about it!

After taking 2 tablespoons of organic ACV in about a 1/4 cup of water with a little agave nectar (you could use honey or a little sugar) every morning before eating anything, I've noticed a huge difference! It's so much easier to start and the flow is much much better! Yeah it doesn't taste all that great but the benefits are totally worth it!!

Just to test things out, I stopped taking the ACV for 1 day about 4 days after starting to use it and all the bad symptoms came back. Once I resumed my morning regiment, it all turned around again! This stuff really does work, for me anyway, and I encourage anyone else to give it a couldn't hurt.

Everybody's different of course so if it doesn't work for you right away, I'd suggest giving it a try for at least a week. Apparently there are a bunch of other health benefits from taking ACV that I've read; lowing blood pressure, weight loss, better food digestion and more efficient mineral absorption, to name a few.

I found that electrolite inbalances are at the root of many ailments. So I make a drink out of a full glass of clean water, mix in 1 tablespoon of honey, a dash of salt to taste, and a tablespoon of ACV. Taste great and is better for you than commercial drinks, especially in hot weather.

Have taken 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in glass of hot water for the last 3 mornings upon waking.

I am 74 and have an enlarged prostate. Dr has had me on doxazosin to relax prostate and bladder muscle. That works well but made me weary, weak, sleepy and dropped my blood pressure down to 90/60.Then he had me cut dose back to 1/2 pill (2.5 mg) and added finasteride to shrink prostate by stopping production of dihydrotestosterone. But that hormone is what makes a male horny. While on it I had nil libido, which did not bother my wife, but I hated it. Have stopped taking both for a week now.

Apple cider vinegar last 3 mornings, seems to work for me. Only had one pee upon rising and another at 1100 after drinking tea and decaff coffee. And sleeping from 2200 to 0500. Used to wake up at least once, sometimes twice for a pee.Great now.

Hi Jim, I've been on Flomax for the last 4 years and for years before that I was on various generic tamsulosins. Flomax works best for me.

However, I have tried various 'cures' over the years, including sawpalmetto but nothing works apart from pumpkin seeds that I blitz into a smoothie with a teaspoon of turmeric, cinnamon, maca powder and crushed linseeds. I say 'worked' but that just means I don't get up in the night like I used to.

My urologist tried me on finasteride for a year but it made no difference. I was glad to get off it. I've had all the various tests and he told me that TURP is next on the list so I told him bollox to all that, I'm not taking the knife.

Anyway, I'm happy to stay as I am on Flomax, which I take at 10pm and I get a good nights sleep. BUT, I'm still searching for the elixir that makes Flomax redundant so I bought some ACV and a kilo of borax which I've made a measured diluted drink with.

I am investigating avenues like K2 and D3 and garnicea. I'll come back on here with the results in the future.

I am 77 and everything works so fingers crossed mate.

R: I use and promote Milled Flax Seed often and am trying to understand why MFS is moderately effective for prostate problems and never heard of this remedy prior. I can only deduce that MFS is helping prostate function indirectly by cleaning the colon thereby reducing infection from leaky colon that finds it's way into the blood, urine, and prostate, or maybe penetrate tissue directly to the prostate. We do at least now know that many cases of inflamed prostate is a result of infection.

In addition to MFS several times daily to keep my colon clean, I take softgels of Aloe Vera about once per week.

No one was more sceptical than me about natural cures, but through desperation I turned to the Internet to try and find help for my prostate issues. I am very grateful to every one who posted about apple cider vinegar because to my amazement it really works. I have had troubles for nearly four years without remedy, and yet within three hours of taking the vinegar (one tablespoon in water) the discomfort I have suffered for so long started to dissipate.

Two days later I feel so much better and I would encourage anyone suffering to give it a try. I have also started taking blackstrap molasses as recomended on another part of this site. I never post on websites but feel it is so important for sufferers to give it a try I had to help spread the word. Best wishes to everyone looking for help.

ACV works really well :) I use 1 or 1 and half tablespoons of ACV in a glass of juice and take that once or twice a day.

I started taking ACV for my prostate issues and found great relief using this. ACV is the best remedy I have found to date. No more pain when urinating. No more pain after sex. Wonderful! Sometimes the pain was really really bad, sometimes I would have erections that would not go away, and were not sexual at all..

Wonder of wonders, after taking ACV I soon noticed my mild reflux was gone.. and also my rhinitis had further improved. I use the No Starch Diet (quite similar to Paleo Diet actually) for my messed up immune system and that had already greatly improved my rhinitis (and other inflammatory immune problem too).

== Other things I tried ==

* Molasses - actually seemed to work reasonably well, but the ACV remedy is better!

* Top quality Multivitamin & Mineral & Antioxidant supplement (Pharmaceutical grade). ACV is still better hehe

* Making the renal system alkaline helped. That includes things like Cream of Tartar mixed with juice. Baking soda and water on an empty tummy. Lots of fruit & veg.. etc.

== Things that make it worse ==

** Chocolate! (due to sugar content perhaps?)

** Sugar

** Coffee

* Excessive protein consumption - makes the urine too acidic and my prostate doesn't like it.

Regarding -- combining ACV & molasses --
Yes you can use them together. Tastes even worst in my opinion hehe. I quite like the taste of ACV with fruit juice. And molasses is tolerable when with strong tea.

-- reducing ACV acidity --
I have issues with the strong acidity of ACV when increasing the dose.. it hurts my teeth. So I started adding baking soda and surprisingly it still worked just as well!! I thought maybe it would stop working but all was good :-). Problem with baking soda is it has too much sodium and gives me a headache, so now I am experimenting with calcium carbonate (lime mineral) which is easily found in most (but maybe not all) calcium supplements. Years ago, a good friend of mine, C.W. Smith, who also happened to be an amazing doctor of chiropractic, recommended the following combination to me: equal parts organic apple cider vinegar, raw honey, and black strap molasses. You mix it together in a glass jar and then you cover the top with cheese-cloth secured into place with a rubber band. You mix a tablespoon each day with hot water and drink it like a tea. The longer it sits (preferably a year or more), the better it is for you. The reasoning behind that is that the longer it sits the more the vinegar helps to pre-digest the other ingredients. It is good for your blood, and so much more.

We should never put honey in hot water. If the water/tea is more than 42 C, all the beneficial enzymes die. Lukewarm to warm is the best, 30-35 degrees Celsius.

Of course you don't have to work out to have such problems as well, it's connected to improper sitting poses, general anxiety, that goes along with unconscious muscle clenching. You won't find that information available on regular sites. I came a long way to find, been to many doctors took some medicine and nothing worked, finally discovered this site:

Hard flaccid is a condition of turtling and hardening of ones penis. Fortunately I don't have this, but it is caused by unbalanced and stressed pelvic floor, and general muscle tightness. The same things that cause chronic prostatitis, erection problems and many, many more, even testicular torsion and infertility (testosterone production can be greatly reduced if tight muscles interfere with normal testicular and prostate function) varicoceles (psoas muscle is too tight or overgrown, as some on that site proved and cured their varicocele by physical therapy besides being convinced by doctors to undergo surgery)

People are generally unaware of problems caused by tight muscles, many peoples lives would be much happier if that knowledge was more widespread.

The way to recovery is long and you have to be very dedicated, but it is possible to recover for virtually everyone, I am doing it for two months and already see big improvement in my prostate problems, even my cold hands and feet became warmer recently (impaired muscle function can suppress circulation in the whole body as many experienced on that site)

So firstly I strongly recommend anybody with similar issues read this site thoroughly, take some notes, appoint a meeting to the pelvic floor therapist, start the trigger point release at home, go to yoga classes (it is extremely beneficial in such case especially bikram yoga as muscles loosen up in heat) and work on your body position during sitting, walking etc (yes even our walking patterns can influence pelvic floor) and what is the most important spread the information so more people could heal.

Hey Mustapha!

I have limited knowlege about your condition, however I have studied up some because my dog has BPH.

You may wish to consider stinging nettle; it is proven effective for treating prostatic issues, moreso than saw palmetto. So - FYI/FWIW {for your information/for what its worth}:

My dog has bph (Benign prostatic hyperplasia) which sucks as I get no sleep til around 4am letting him out to not pee. He has to be on antibiotics but was still struggling so in between opening the door I spend my nights educating myself. I am definately buying avc today and adding it to his nettle Rosemary roubious palmetto berry tea which I grow and harvest myself. It's delicious!! I add it to 1c of his food n add I tsp citrocel twice a day. He's adamant that I'm on top of it so usually make it before I pass out lol. It's been hard in that he can't communicate to me what helps and I don't have that body part so hearing from you "penis people" (and I say that lovingly lol) has been so helpful!

Give the nettle tea a try it really seems to help him so much. U can order it online and I highly recommend dried saw palmetto berries that I add while boiling the water. Steep for at least 15-20mins but I let it sit overnight. The nettles help with infection and packed with nutrients! Good luck fellas as I'm a true believer in "its your penis use it when you want to" kinda hard when it's broken.

You wouldn't happen to have a copy of that pdf file on the nettles, would you? The link isn't working and I can't seem to access the main site either. :-/ My dog also has BPH (with cysts - does yours have cysts also?) and I'm trying to find things to help him with it. I'm currently using horsetail herb decoction mixed in with his food, but the more the better!

You can add the ACV to any type juice if the taste bothers you. Many put the ACV into a small glass of orange juice.

Apple Cider Vinegar

First - a painless way to take the ACV is in V8 juice. A shot in a glass is actually a nice drink. Having a friend who had prostate issues, I sent him a link to this page and just to try, used ACV in pea soup last night and ---- strange, no urgent need to hit the bathroom this morning. That, following nighly trips there in the last week. Just maybe I'll get around to follow-up posts.
