Natural Remedies for Diverticulitis Relief: Safe & Effective

Grapefruit Seed Extract

GFSE is a miracle worker for diverticulitis. Had several attacks 2 years ago for which I took Dr's intense antibiotics which made me feel like my intestines we're ruined. Took a month to get back to my normal. I've done many things since then to prevent more attacks but for my last two (year and a half apart) GFSE worked as fast or faster (less than half a day) than the antibiotics to completely stop the pain and then another half day for a natural release of the infection and raised sweaty temperature.

I also used monolaurin (an antibacterial coconut extract) at the same time, so to play it safe I'd say use both.

One (and only one) good word for allopathic meds. Along w the antibiotic prescription, Dr's will usually prescribe an anti-spasmodic which really does help with the painful spasms until the GFSE kicks in.

I do keep the diverticulitis antibiotics on hand as a fallback but hopefully we'll never have to use them again. Also, Very Important, if u don't already know this : don't eat when ur having an attack, stick w water juices and Aloe. Just google what to do for a diverticulitis attack and you'll see Mayo Clinic or other reputable site telling u how to handle the acute phase. Just go very easy on food for a day or two after ur better so as not to damage ur still sensitive intestines.

Look for Aloe that is made from the fillet and NOT "Whole Leaf" The latex lining of the green outer skin contains laxative ingredients and the side effects listed by the Mayo Clinic. Almost all Aloe on the market is processed with activated charcoal to remove the latex component.

I am responding to myself as an addendum. This cure I described works, but the cause of my diverticulitis is worth mentioning - now that I know the cause, the cure will not be required again. I would have symptoms (bloating, pain) of diverticulitis concurrent with a toothache. I noticed that symptoms arose when I sat at my desk. On my desk is a wireless modem. The tooth that ached was the only one with a filling. As cell phones will make earrings hot, so the modem was heating my tooth AND the colloidal silver in my gut (which did ease symptoms of diverticulitis when I was not near the modem).

As soon as I killed the modem, symptoms were GONE and have not returned. My house is now wired, no more wireless. I have fewer floaters and sleep better now also (after a week of no wireless). I had to share this info so I made a video called "WI-FRIED", you can find it on YouTube.

I had no idea what diverticulitis was until I googled "pain lower left stomach". I juice fruits & vegetables everyday, but this is NOT a good idea when you have diverticulitis apparently - avoid anything acidic IE strawberries can set it off.

Thanks to EC, I found several treatments and employed all 6:

  1. Whole leaf Aloe Vera gel (6 tablespoons in a glass of water)
  2. papaya enzymes (2 chewable tablets)
  3. grapefruit seed extract (1 capsule)
  4. probiotics (1 capsule of 150 billion active cells),
  5. apple cider vinegar (2 tablespoons in a glass of water)
  6. colloidal silver (two tablespoons)

I bought all these, took them, and had no symptoms after 1 hour. For short term relief (the previous night) I found that lying down helped, as did taking a hot shower. Smoking (previous night) made it flare up, so I am abstaining today. I will continue to take the daily recommended amounts of these 6 remedies, but considering the first round stopped the pain and all other symptoms, I can say this works!

I am in the throes of healing my first bought of diverticulitis. No antibiotics for me but my this was my remedy:

Pain lessened within 24 hours; completely gone within 4 days. My bad - re-introduced a couple foods too quickly. Colonoscopy scheduled :-(

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

I have been taking Aloe Vera Juice (Whole Leaf) for over two years for diverticulitis. I was just in the ER twice in one week with heart issues, low potassium and electrolyte imbalances. The cardiologist suggested it could be the Aloe Vera juice and had me read a few articles, including one from the Mayo clinic, that have severe warnings about internally taking it which described almost all of my symptoms. I'm wondering if anyone has heard any dangers about it? I was happy taking it and really thought it worked; now I'm not so sure.

I have found a "big gun" for my diverticulitis. When the grapefruit seed extract and slippery elm isn't enough, and I start feeling the aching stomach signal that an attack is imminent, I have had perfect success with Colloidal Silver. Take two teaspoons and relief is within minutes. Thank God for relief from pain, because I'm a wuss and want to crawl in a hole when I'm in pain. The directions warn not to take this for more than 10 days. Hope this will help others who have suffered as I have.

Regarding seeds - if you are forming normal stools, there should not be loose seeds and nuts floating around separately in the colon to get stuck anywhere - it should all be bound safely in the stool, which should slide through the colon with the natural mucuses smoothly past any imperfections.... That is why fiber is recommended - it helps the stool to form and bind correctly.

However I suspect, since clearly some people can't tolerate seeds/nuts, the differences between people may be due to some people not forming good stools, or not having normal mucus secretion in the colon, so loose bits might drift around or get caught up. So I don't think this is a yes/no issue. Just try to figure out for yourself what your risk factors are. In theory you should not have loose raspberry seeds by the time the food reaches you colon, but perhaps a few people do!

So I have not given up seeds and nuts, and will continue to work on having healthy stools to avoid future episodes. Glad to read about Aloe, I will add to the preventives. Thanks all.

I have had occasional bouts of diverticulitis and have found slippery elm to be very soothing and beneficial. I generally make about 250 ml of warm water in a glass, place in a teaspoon of honey and stir. Add 2 heaped teaspoons of slippery elm powder and stir to a smooth consistency. It's quite pleasant to drink. I take this first thing in the morning and just before I go to bed.

I have also found grapefruit seed extract to be very helpful and works quickly.

Having grown up on game meats, lots of elk, I want to point out that any lean meat especially dried, can constipate unless you get plenty of fat elsewhere, which is one reason native peoples like pemmican vs jerk. Add the large amounts of almonds certainly made matters worse. If liquids were low, that would make it worse still. I have done similar over the years and didn't realize the grip-gut I experienced was the start of diverticulitis. I now do the aloe vera juice, lots of mineral water, & slippery elm bark tablets to keep a healthy colon.

Diatomaceous Earth

RH,

Urine may be sterile, but people can have a UTI and not be aware of it, in which case the urine can carry the bacteria and the person not be aware of it. So with a healthy urinary tract, the urine could be sterile, however the penis and scrotum including the surrounding area can be a bacterial breeding ground, both good and bad. A good exposure to a wide variety of bacteria can be good for helping to maintain an effective immune system, but over exposure to a lot of bad bacteria can definitely have a downside.

I don't normally get urine on my hands when I urinate, but I definitely handle my penis and surrounding area at that time and I do wash my hands under those circumstances. I'm not a totally PC person, but I do wash my hands after taking care of business.

HI U KARIN, , , , , , , , as all know, I's smart, jus slow. Here is my understanding of food grade DE. This is a mined product, so I buy it at our agri co-op in 50 # bags and it is all food grade. We also buy horse MSM from the co-op instead of the pharmacy and at the same quality and 1/3 the price.

Folks get hung up on this quality crap. H202 is classic. Bill Munro used the brown bottle stuff for over 25 years and cured two cancers with it.

What I get nervous about is using DMSO. There I am cautious because this solvent will take garbage and all into your body. My wife does my back where I have crushed vertebrae and she washes her hands before using the lineament and then the DMSO.

To me it's a common sense thing. I wash my hands after a bowel movement, but not when I take a pee. Your fresh urine is sterile. Why should I wash my hands? In a public restroom, all want to be PC and I get looks when I don't wash. It's an ignorance thing. Read and when you get tired, read some more.

Diatomaceous earth prevents my diverticulitis attacks. After trying a number of alternative treatments for this recurring problem, none of which helped, I discovered diatomaceous earth. I had eliminated many foods, but the problem kept getting worse until this discovery in March, 2014. Since then, I've only had one minor episode when I skipped my dosage for two weeks, and stopped the attack from getting worse by taking two doses spread a few hours apart. I can now eat anything I want with no problem!

Initially, I took one tablespoon in half a glass of water -on an empty stomach- twice a day, but after a month, it began to hurt my stomach, and I began spreading out dosages. I now take it once a week and feel cured!

It is extremely important to only use Food Grade diatomaceous earth. There is a version of this used for swimming pool filters which can be fatal! The food grade is quite safe to ingest, but be careful not to inhale the dust which can damage lungs.

The attacks, which had been worsening for years, are now history.

J: A common cause of Coon disorders is some type parasites. I would begin treatment for those higher up the chain than what the meds you got treat. The standard herbals are a combination of Black Walnut Hulls, Wormwood Bark, and Clove. You can find these in one supplement at most health food stores. In addition to these herbs I personally recommend adding Garlic and Oregano plus a spoon of Milled Flaxseed (cleans the colon from the inside out).

My tractor driver had a bowel problem and she did a long colon cleanse and is now much better. We also do a colonic once a month. My suggestion is to research until you are sleepy and then research some more. Your solution is on the internet somewhere, your chore is to find it.

I was just diagnosed with diverticulitis. Dr. gave me 2 shots in the rear. They gave me one bag of IV antibiotics and sent me home with Cipro and Flagyl oral antibiotics. Its day 4 since diagnosed and I feel better than when I went in but it still is hurting and I had alot of back and pelvic pain with mine. Did anyone else? My back still hurt and pelvis which is what I struggled with for months on end before my lower abdominals started really hurting. Actually my abdominals didn't start hurting until about 2 weeks ago but the backache has been 6 months at least. Just wondering if they are even related. I have to strain alot to pass stools whether they are hard or not. I always have to push to get out my BM's. I have internal hemorroids and that is part of the problem. But I wonder if scar tissue for passing too large BM has not happened. Anyway I don't know a cure for me as I will always strain and I think that is what cause the intestines to swell the pockets from pure pressure of straining at the bowel to empty. I need to fill up the pockets so nothing can get in. I heard Slippery elm helps coats the intestines and if the normal muscus coating fills in the pockets then nothing can get in. Short on me having them get rid of the hemorroids which is surgury that I don't want. I don't feel like I have a answer. Does anyone know of anything to get rid of internal hemorroids?

Seeds do not CAUSE diverticulitis. A low fiber diet can cause it to develop. Once you have the condition, you need to eliminate things like seeds from your diet as they will cause a flare-up, because they get caught in the pockets in the colon which causes inflammation and pain.

I took 3 capsules, 800mg each, per day, I.e., total of 2400mgs. Sometimes I took all 3 in the morning, other days I spread them out over the course of the day. I got mine from Vitacost as they had the best deal (less than $20 for 200 capsules). After completely clearing up the condition, I stopped the daily regimen and did not have a flare up from 2010 until this month, when all of the symptoms of diverticulitis returned (I wasn't surprised because I had gone back to eating processed and fast foods fairly regularly - I know, I know, shame on me! ) So I started up with the turmeric, psyllium husks, aloe vera juice and within 5 days, I have no more pain or tenderness and am symptom free. I learned my lesson - no more processed junk food for me!!!

Seeds, nuts, etc do not cause diverticulitis. Look at the mayoclinic.com or clevelandclinic.com and you will see that although Dr's told people with diverticulitis not to eat popcorn, seeds or nuts for years, recent studies show no correlation. I've also been told that not enough fiber causes diverticulitis, but since I grew up eating from an organic garden, and still eat a lot of fiber and not a lot of processed foods, I don't think that is the cause either. My grandmother had it and never ate processed food in her life. Had raw veggies with every lunch and dinner. So in my opinion, we don't really know what causes diverticulitis.

To help empower your probiotic and get more bang for your buck, it is recommended to take a natural antibiotic like Grapefruitseed, Olive Leaf, or Oregano Extract before retiring and take the probiotic first thing when awakening. FOS or Inulin is also recommended as a pre-probiotic as it helps the digestion environment for proper colonization.

Another critical nutrient for colon health is Butyric Acid. Butyric Acid is found most abundant in Butter and gives it the kinda rotten smell. B.A. is rarely available in supplement form but is effective and would be highly recommended during flare-ups. Also the body makes B.A. as a byproduct of incomplete digestion of Wheat or Oat Fiber.

Back to Aloe Vera. I have been using Aloe on-and-off for yrs. I currently take two soft gels once per wk as a maintenance dose.

I've suffered with Diverticulitis for a number of years now as it comes and goes in severity. About 18 months ago, I had a particularly bad bout and it was time to see the doctor. He gave a course of antibiotics which I admit did make me feel worse before I felt better. I'm certainly not a fan of antibiotics but occasionally they are needed.

Obviously, a good course of high quality probiotics are indicated after using antibiotics... and of course anything that is going to improve digestive health with this condition is a positive thing. I personally like the Odos Choice as there are 30 billion viable organisms per capsule, about 8 different strains and they have to be kept in the fridge which for some reason makes me feel more confident about it - but I digress.

I have always been a fan of Aloe and I spend alot of time in France. They have a drink there in most shops that is basically just water and aloe and everyone drinks it for their overall gut health (presumably because of a rich food diet). I found though that it works miracles if you just use it (well Aloe in general) all the time, rather than when you are feeling under the weather as it's also a powerful preventative measure rather than a treatment.

I get very few problems these days as a result (although Aloe isn't the only thing I use every day but it one of the main things).

Yay for Aloe Vera - which tastes nice and sounds nice. :)

One of the best aloes that was recommended (by Jini Patel Thompson who healed her crohn's disease) is George's aloe which helped heal my IBS along with licorace, marshmellow, slippery elm and Natren probiotics. Country Life Papaya Enzymes were my favorite but since healing my gut, I've not needed any for 10 months (before I averaged 10-20 a week). God knows these sources were so much better than what the docs suggested. If you have stress in your life, consider adrenal support products. Tumeric (1/4 - 1/2 t for smaller framed person; 3/4 t for larger) works amazingly well to eliminate boils or fistulas. Not only did I drink it (in almond milk but not necessary) but applied it as a paste. By next morning, gone. It may cause your heart to race, so start small. Back to the aloe, it was explained to me that one should only drink the purest form of aloe, esp if there are stomach or intestinal issues. George's is pure, tastes like refreshing water and take approx 1/4 cup before meals.

When push comes to shove, one can try a more expensive option for ulcers when lower cost options don't work. It cured my diverticulitis within two months. I used Aloe Muciliginous Polysaccharrides. It did cost me $126 at full dose per month at 9 capsules per day. I was able to cut down to 2 capsules per day after 2 months. How fast it works depends on severity of ulcers. Some people can have results in a week. Once you get better, you can cut down your dosage.

You should be on a high quality pro biotic. Probiotics has also cured this condition. I assume you have tried that.

I was diagnosed in 2010 with diverticulitis. In 2011 I had a flare up and was told (by a separate doctor that had diagnosed me) that flare ups should not be happening, and if I had another it meant surgery. Well, that scared the life out of me so in 2013 when I had another flare up I saw yet another doctor. She also mentioned surgery. All 3 times I had the Cipro/Flagyl combo and hated the way they made me feel and the metallic taste. I had my 4th flare start last week and was adamant not to see a doctor nor hear the word "surgery". I started to research to see what my alternatives were and came upon this site. After reading about Aloe and Papaya I decided I would try that and if it didn't work I would (reluctantly) make an appointment to go in.

I bought Aloe Vera caps and Papaya with Mint; within one day I was already seeing improvement and now I am on my third day and although I know I am not 100% feeling better, I am 100% certain I will not be going to see a doctor to get antibiotics. I am thrilled beyond belief and so thankful to have found the feedback I found on this site.

I am going to stay on a daily regimen of Aloe Vera to see if I can remain free of attacks, but glad to know I have alternatives to antibiotics.

Psyllium and clay can cause constipation if sufficient water is not consumed while taking them, and some people cannot use this remedy at all without experiencing constipation and gastric inflammation. I would advise a moderately strict diet with regular salt water cleanses to clear up your condition and avoiding ingestion of psyllium and clay in the future.

Salt Water Cleanse

Salt Water Cleanse for Diverticulitis: Dissolve 2 tsp non-iodized, natural salt (such as Himalayan pink salt or sea salt) in 1 liter warm water. Drink in the morning on an empty stomach. When you first feel the urge to go, just resist the urge and let the solution "brew" in your intestines for about 30 minutes (or more if you can stand it). When you feel you can't stand it any longer, visit the toilet. This will likely result in one semi-solid defecation and 3 or more liquid ones. Avoid eating anything until you can go one hour without evacuating your bowels (which takes about 5 hours for me), then have light meals for the rest of the day. Repeat in 2 days, increasing the salt to up to 3 tsp, if you are not feeling any better. Once you are feeling better, it is important to eat a high-fiber diet and drink plenty of water to prevent flare-ups.

I first decided to try this remedy after having a flare-up due to taking calcium/magnesium/zinc tablets (calcium can cause constipation). After suffering for a few days with pretty severe pain, I figured I would try this remedy. I believe this remedy works by dissolving the contents of diverticula while reducing swelling and inhibiting bacterial growth. The next morning, I woke up pain-free!

Note that using iodized salt in this remedy probably will work but is dangerous because it may result in iodine poisoning. For best results, use filtered water or boiled tap water. I would advise doing this on a day when you are going to be home all day because you'll feel the urge to run to the bathroom throughout the day. Avoid passing gas when not on the toilet because it will probably not just be gas!

Where to buy GSE (GRAPEFRUIT Seed Extract): 1) You can purchase it on the Internet. 2) Whole Foods carries it. 3) Some non-chain Health Food Stores carry it. I have never found it at a chain health food store. If your hometown healthfood store does not carry it, just order it off the internet.

I took the AMP capsules so the taste was irrelevant. Most AMP products come with 270 capsules although slightly different strengths but I did find one with 90 capsules and good strengths so lower cost for less severe condition. I had to take AMP capsules for a month and half before I found relief but many people find immediate relief within days or weeks. It depends upon the severity of the problem. Here are comparisons of some products: aloereviews.com/Reviews.aspx

AMP-ed up aloe vera likely saved my life. Physician had me on two strong antibiotics to cure diverticulitis leaving me with strict instructions to take ALL doses. Within two days, I was having what I call rigors (muscle rigidity) and felt close to death! When by the grace of God, I awakened that next morning I told my husband I would NEVER take another antibiotic in my life. After researching on earthclinic.com, I dispatched my husband to the health food store to buy several items! But the one that made the most immediate impact was ALOE Vera juice with AMP. Within 1 hour I was better and by the afternoon I was 2000% better!!!!! It is now a part of my daily regime, although it does taste like drinking hydrogen peroxide.
