Effective Natural Remedies for Managing Diarrhea

Sesame Seeds

I love this site where I have found many alternative cures. For diarrhea, I toast in a pan, at low heat, two tablespoons of sesame seeds, when they are lightly toasted, I add a cup of water to the seeds, let them boil for three minutes, and then let them cool. Then I put through a strainer and drink the liquid. It helps without fail to stop the diarrhea. But, if you ate something bad, let the stomach clean itself for a day, then take the sesame seeds tea. Hope it helps.

I ate something that my body didn't like and immediately got diarrhea that lasted for two weeks. I tried many other suggestions on here that didn't work including 2 Tbs ACV, even though it has worked before, but eating one radish stopped it!!!! I read that the radish is a super food and good for digestion It has so many other benefits too. It was my miracle cure! Look it up!

Apple Cider Vinegar worked for my husband's diarrhea too. He used to take Imodium whenever he had diarrhea but lately the drug can no longer cure it and he felt bloated. So I followed the advice of EC contributors and have him take 2 tablespoons of ACV mixed in 8 oz. water. It worked fast and he does not complain of stomach discomfort or diarrhea since then.

Turmeric

Hello Phil,

I have given my children turmeric for many things and found it to be quite safe and effective for them. For a 4 year old or so, I have mixed 1/4 teaspoon in some applesauce, yogurt, or honey 3 times a day. For a 10 year old I might give 1/2 teaspoon three times a day. For a teen, I would give 3/4-1 teaspoon, the same as an adult. Just sharing you that to give a starting place to dose children.

Since turmeric is a food, it should be compatible with medication. However, turmeric can be constipating if enough water is not taken. Just keep that in mind with whatever medication is being given. I once used Immodium about 25 years ago. I guess it stopped the diarrhea but caused such terrible stomach pain in my (and my husband) we never have used it again.

Hope that helps.

Absolute YEA.

I was taking the dreaded antibiotic, Clindamycin, which is legendary in it's reputation for not only horrible diarrhea, but also C. Diff as well. Anyway, I was starving becuase I basically crapped everything out all night. And, I decided to instead add 2 tablespoons of turmeric to my meal. Meal being: fried fish, collard greens, and mac and cheese... yup soul food..lol.

Ok, so I eat my meal with the turmeric added and voila! Like magic no diarrhea. And, most of all, the food tasted even better with it!

Also, for people who are having trouble drinking water with turmeric due to taste, you can also try making a wonderfully smooth and tasty turmeric drink using Almond Milk. Warm up your almond mik a little bit in the microwave first, then add 1 tablespoon of turmeric after you warmed the milk and umm hmm good! Tasty and no more diarrhea!

God Bless Earth Clinic!

I heard there was a bit of a stomach flu going around among some friends who were stuck home with diarrhea and pains. Eventually I got the telltale head congestion and mucus running going on, and felt some sharp abdominal pains and rumbling sounds, so I could tell I caught the stomach bug myself!

I acted pre-emptively before any diarrhea started, and had about 2 tbsp. Straight ACV washed down with some water. The stomach pains and sounds stopped within 20 minutes. I haven't had any diarrhea at all, and I've been drinking fluids here and there and eating light, natural foods. So far, so good!

I have never experienced such a bad diarrhea until today.. I ate a double cheeseburger at McDon.. And I think I had food poisoning. I literally went to the bathroom every 30 min or so. I was searching online for cures for diarrhea and I found this website. After reading all the comments, to make sure no one experienced anything bad, I told my mom to go buy me Apple Cider Vinegar. I diluted 3 teaspoons of ACV into a cup of water and I drank it. After 10-20 min, my stomach hurt less and it's been 2 hours since I haven't had any bowel movements. Also, I think what helped was the fact that I ate rice and I drank peppermint tea with no sugar. But ACV definitely played the biggest part.

THE PROBLEM: Last week my wife's sister was visiting us from New Jersey. Somehow she must have eaten something that didn't agree with her and she got Diarrhea. She suffered with it for a couple of hours. Then, finally told us (my wife and I) about it.

WHAT WE DID
I simply said to her, let's try some tumeric. I have seen that work before for diarrhea, maybe it will work for you too.

We mixed half a tsp of tumeric into about a 5 ounce glass of water. I told her to mix it well with the teaspoon and then drink fast as it tends to quickly settle on the bottom.

"It tastes like dirt!" she said. "It isn't that bad!" I retorted with a chuckle. Then she drank about another 3-4 ounces of water as a chaser.

THE RESULTS
About 2 hours later we heard some good news from my sister-in-law. No more diarrhea! She was most impressed (and not to mention relieved!) that a simple herb could help - and fast!

Ok, that's it, just 1/2 a tsp of tumeric and 2 hours later - relief! Hope this info. helps someone else.

Cheers.

P.S. We used organic tumeric in powdered form.

Aloe Vera

At the first sign of gastro-intestinal upset take 1/3 cup of aloe vera juice. Relieves diarrhea and associated cramping within 15 minutes. Better than Kaopectate or Immodium AD. It can be purchased in the Health Food section of most grocery stores. The taste is not horrible but not great either. For children the aloe vera juice can be added to orange or apple juice to disguise the taste. I have been using this remedy since 1991 and swear by it.

Milk

I learned this from my great grandmother who used it all the time.

If you have problems with diarrhea take two cups of whole milk (IT HAS TO BE WHOLE MILK) and boil it to a rolling boil. (It takes a long time to get to boil, but once it does...it will boil over so watch it close). Let the milk cool and as it cools it forms a skim over the top of the milk, peel it off and drink it.

It works guaranteed. But as always if you continue to have problems see a dr.

Just to let you know this is a GREAT site. I have recommended it to lots of people who are having ailments which I believe can be helped by natural remedies.

I work in a long term care facility and am exposed to a lot of germs. I drink a Tablespoon of ACV & Honey in water daily and believe this keeps my immune system up. While a horrid stomach & diarrea bug had the place quarantined, (Knock on wood) I escaped this bug which I give credit to the ACV/Honey.

My co-workers tease me about my attention to "natural" eating, etc, but I try to avoid processed foods, drink lots lots of water. Thanks so much for this site.

Banana Peel

Banana Peel for dysentery: Years ago, fearful of getting dysentry on our travels to europe, our doctor reassured us that we did not have to worry, as long as there were bananas available- he said to eat the white portion of the banana skin. Over the years we have used this method for this purpose. Start out by using about 1/3rd of the inner skin and increase if needed .. It really works .It has a slightly stringent taste, which can be masked by mixing it with peanut butter or jam.

Pickle Juice (remedy) for Diarrhea:

My family has been using this remedy for years and years. It really works!!! This remedy is used when you have a bad case of diarrhea. Just take at least 3Tbsp. of pickle juice (from the regular plain Dill Pickles jar) and right away you'll start to feel better and you won't have to worry about running to the bathroom. It really works wonders!!! Good Luck!!!

Worked for me too some while back. I took 1/2 teaspoon at 1/2 hour interval. Than prepared long grain rice leaving it a bit watery and adding a pinch of salt and pinch molasses. After any bout with diarrhea I always eat foods that are neutral that goes easy on the stomach, anything that has a bit of starch/carbs.

Blackberry Brandy

For SERIOUS seemingly intractable diarrhea, take one shot glass of blackberry brandy. I learned this decades ago from a neighbor whose grandmother would but one-eighth TEASPOON, an infintesimal amount in the baby bottle for youngsters whose diarrhea hung on for many days.

The stuff is STRONG, it's an old folklore remedy which almost always works, for anybody, any age, any reason.

For long term loose stools with intermittent diarrhea, try a wheat-free gluten free diet for a month. Research this online, as wheat is hidden "everywhere," for instance there is apparently only one spice company which does NOT add wheat flour to its spices --- SO, you see, it's VERY easy to be exposed to wheat gluten in processed foods or eating in restaurants, no matter what one orders.

HIGH dose biotin can be "miraculous" for some folks -- get the FIVE-MILLIGRAM bottles at the health food store. I was amazed the first time that I swallowed 25-MILLIGRAMS of biotin, as that "expensive" bottle of this B-Vitamin was certainly cheaper than the many medical tests.

For a long term solution, massive supplementation with very large amounts of acidophilus has been successful.

Lemon Water

For diarrhea: Lemon water. I have found that drinking lemon water has stopped my 6 months of diarrhea. This is amazing. One 16 oz water bottle( drink some to make room for juice), squeeze one fresh lemon, pour into water bottle. Sip all day. Then do this again the next day and sip on this one bottle for 2 days. Keep making one bottle last 2days and always drink with a straw as to not damage teeth. Best results after about two weeks. This drink also alkalizes your body. Lemon turns into an alkaline after ingested.

Bonus: sleeping through the night.
