I used bentonite clay and pysllium husk shakes for several years for aluminum, mercury and petrochemical removal from the body. The results were confirmed by blood test, to the considerable surprise of the person doing the test. Clay has a power of attraction and will bind heavy metals etc. so that they can be carried out of the body from the GI tract. Remember that what we have ingested the body will either excrete or metabolize and if it cannot do either, it will sequester toxins in the fat, organs etc. Attempting to remove these substances from where the body has put them WITHOUT providing an additional mechanism of excretion such as clay is IMHO very foolish. If the body could have excreted them in the first place it would have! But provide the additional and effective mechanism via bentonite clay and I believe the body will migrate the toxins to the GI tract for excretion. The body has an intelligence after all. DMPS "tests" for mercury etc. are particularly dangerous IMHO as they pull into the blood stream what is probably a greater quantity of heavy metals than was ever present during the ingestion phase. I saw such a case lead to rapid onset dementia and death.
