Baking Soda Health Benefits: Natural Remedies & Cleaning Tips

| Modified on Dec 17, 2023
Baking Soda Health Benefits

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is more than just a key ingredient in baking recipes. This versatile natural compound has been a staple in households for over a hundred years, offering a range of health benefits.

Renowned for its effectiveness against indigestion, skin burns, insect bites, and even gout, baking soda is a multifaceted home remedy. Additionally, its role as an eco-friendly and cost-effective cleaning solution cannot be overstated. Comprising vital elements like sodium, hydrogen, and carbon, baking soda is an indispensable item in every home and vehicle for its myriad uses.

Health Benefits

Despite its simplicity and affordability, baking soda is often the most effective solution, even in clinical environments. Hospitals utilize sodium bicarbonate to manage certain drug overdose cases. Its application extends to respiratory treatments in hospital settings, where it's used in nebulizers for asthma relief and to counteract chlorine gas exposure.1, 2

Natural Heartburn Relief

Baking soda's most celebrated health benefit is as a natural antacid.3 A small dose of 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon mixed with water offers quick relief. Unlike many commercial heartburn and acid reflux remedies that contain artificial sweeteners and additives, baking soda is a pure, additive-free, and economical alternative.

Kidney Health

Research indicates that baking soda can slow the progression of chronic kidney disease.4 However, it's crucial to consult with healthcare professionals before relying solely on baking soda for serious health conditions.

Gout and Kidney Stones Treatment

Sodium bicarbonate assists in dissolving uric acid crystals, the culprits behind gout and certain kidney stones. It can be consumed orally or used in a foot bath to relieve gout symptoms directly.

Body Alkalization

Many health issues stem from or are exacerbated by excessive body acidity. Factors like modern diets, processed foods, excessive coffee consumption, and insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables contribute to this. Regularly ingesting a mixture of ¼ teaspoon of baking soda in 6 ounces of water on an empty stomach can help in balancing the body's pH, potentially alleviating various health problems.

Benefits of Baking Soda Baths

Adding a cup of baking soda to a warm bath enhances the bath's therapeutic qualities. Ideal for addressing a variety of itchy skin conditions, baking soda baths provide relief from chicken pox, shingles, insect bites, poison ivy, and dermatitis. Additionally, these baths offer comfort to those suffering from colds or the flu, as baking soda absorbed through the skin assists in body alkalization.

Baking Soda Paste

Creating a paste from baking soda and water is an effective natural remedy for various issues. Mix equal parts of baking soda and water, adjusting the quantities to achieve the desired consistency.

Treating Burns

Applying a baking soda paste to a burn can be soothing, but only after the burn has been cooled under running water for 10-15 minutes. It's important to note that baking soda should not be used on severe burns.

Removing Splinters

Applying baking soda paste over a splinter and covering it with a bandage can help remove it. The paste's properties aid in drawing out the splinter. Replace the bandage every eight hours for best results.

Bee Stings

Applying baking soda paste is effective for immediate pain relief from bee stings or insect bites. It not only eases pain but also helps in reducing swelling.

Cradle Cap

For infants and toddlers with cradle cap, gently massaging a baking soda paste onto the scalp during bath time can be beneficial. Rinse after 10 minutes and shampoo gently. This treatment can be repeated 2-3 times a week. However, caution is advised to prevent alkalosis in babies, so don't leave the paste on for more than 10 minutes and limit the frequency of use.5

Baking Soda for Beauty Routines

Baking soda, when transformed into a paste, is a natural exfoliant for the skin. Gently massaging this onto the face can remove dead skin cells. However, limit this practice to once or twice a month to prevent skin dryness and imbalance, as the skin's natural pH is slightly acidic.

As a shampoo alternative, baking soda can occasionally be used for its oil-absorbing and odor-neutralizing properties. While effective as a "dry shampoo," its alkaline nature means it should be used sparingly to maintain the natural acidity of hair and scalp.

Baking soda also finds its place in oral hygiene as a traditional toothpaste. Unlike hair and skin, an alkaline environment in the mouth is preferred to prevent tooth decay and bad breath. Brushing with baking soda before bed helps maintain oral alkalinity and whiten teeth.

Baking Soda for Cleaning

Baking Soda for Eco-Friendly Cleaning
Baking soda offers an affordable, space-saving, and environmentally friendly alternative to various cleaning chemicals. Keeping a jar in the kitchen and bathroom is convenient for numerous cleaning tasks.

DIY Scented Baking Soda Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 4 drops essential oil (orange, lemon, pine, or lavender)

Instructions:

  • Blend baking soda and essential oil in a blender, or mix manually.
  • Store in a shaker bottle for easy use.

This homemade scrub is excellent for cleaning sinks, countertops, toilets, tile floors, and bathtubs. It also serves as a deodorizer for carpets, bathrooms, laundry, and refrigerators.

Baking Soda as a Fire Extinguishing Agent

In certain situations, such as grease or electrical fires, baking soda is a safer alternative to water, which can exacerbate these fires. (Note: Neither water nor baking soda is appropriate for deep fryer fires.)

Potential Side Effects of Baking Soda

While generally safe, baking soda can lead to alkalosis if used excessively, causing electrolyte imbalance. It's also been rarely linked to stomach rupture when used to alleviate severe overeating. Though concerns exist about sodium bicarbonate raising blood pressure, studies have not conclusively shown this effect. However, those with hypertension or on medication should consider potential dietary impacts. Regular baking soda use can mask symptoms of underlying health issues, so it's not a long-term solution for significant health problems.6,7,8

In my own case or personal experience.

For the last 20 years I have suffered from reflux or upset stomach. Many doctors have prescribed reflux medication, some helped but nothing fixed the problem. So after cleaning a drain with Bi Carb (Baking Soda) I thought I would try it on myself. I took half a small teaspoon of bi carb in about an inch of water in a glass. This instantly fixed the reflux. (Great) and lasted for a week.

Note: If you suffer chest pains, as the above take half a small teaspoon of bi carb in about an inch of water in a glass. If you only have Reflux or indigestion it will instantly neutralise the acid causing reflux and related pain. If however the pain persists after 5 minutes it could be angina or heart related.

However over the years the daily dosage needed to keep the reflux in check rose to 5 teaspoons of bi-carb each day. Finally in desperation I looked through the Internet. The cause of the reflux I had been having all those years was caused by sugar. 8 to 10 cups of coffee and tea each day with 2 spoons of sugar in each cup, also several glasses of soft drinks. That's about 8000 yes eight thousand spoonfuls a year. So I simply cut out sugar and soft drinks (No artificial sweeteners or chocolate) Since that day I have never had reflux or needed to take anything to combat it.

I also had a problem over many years with painful mouth ulcers. Constantly reoccurring. I cut out using tomato sauce and this problem also went away (could be the high levels of sugar and acids).

Everyone who eats sugar suffers from an upset stomach in varying degrees. It does not worry some people. However the human body makes a natural antacid to balance this. However it uses the calcium in your body to produce this natural antacid. So if you consume large amounts of sugars in your diet you could have to take calcium supplements.

After years of acid reflux and stomach issues I started to think I was lactose intolerant. I lived on antacids and stomach relaxers. Then I went on a high protein diet and was eating milk products but no carbs and all my stomach problems disappeared. Sure enough it was the sugar that was the problem. I do take omeprazole daily. It is available by prescription or over the counter. I do like the idea of using baking soda to keep my system alkaline since I eat a lot of fruit and drink juice.

In my case, I've been suffering from nail fungus for the past 8 years, i've tried antibiotics, hand creams, home remedies, nail laquers, and so many stuff but it keeps coming back. Never been cured. I'm also concerned bacause I have acid reflux and chostocondritis which is making it worst due to fungal. Hope you could help me with this kind of situation. Thank you :D

Is there any way one can mix the baking soda and molasses with juices? Wasn't sure if mixing the baking soda and molasses with a beverage juice will lessen the potency? I've seen some youtube videos where someone has mixed baking soda with just grapefruit juice and it worked fine.

Any recommendations would be enormously appreciated!

After suffering with hyperacidity for several months and trying the "Green Drink", Baking Soda and lime, baking soda and ACV and just about every supplement and OTC treatment under the sun and achieving lackluster results, I decided that it had to be something else. I eat very healthily, don't smoke, rarely drink alcohol (like maybe 1x/month if that), don't eat fast food or junk food and avoid all red meat, high fat foods, tomato-based foods, chocolate, caffeine, etc. After testing my urine pH for the upteenth time one day, it occurred to me to test my reverse osmosis soft water because I consume around 70 oz of water daily and my problems coincided with my move to a new home where I began drinking the reverse osmosis soft water for the first time. Imagine my shock (and relief) when, after multiple tests, I discovered that the water I had been drinking has a 5.25 pH. I'm posting this in hopes that it saves others out there some anguish. I am now drinking bottled mineral water and using the tap water (pH 6.75) to brew my ginger, chamomille and other herbal teas and my urine pH is stable and consistently in the "normal" range.

My question is when to take in relation to meals and time of day. With water or lemon/lime juice etc? Would take the lower level say one teaspoon a day or a bit less.

Janique from Manila, Philippines collodiol silver will help but a much cheaper method that will last you a very long time Is a bottle of tea tree oil make sure it is 100% Tea tree oil 36% terpinen ol-4 is the usual strength make sure it is from australlia were tea tree oil comes from most brands should be.. I got a bottle for 5$ and this will last me a very long time I used to cure staph killed my staph infection in 3 days. It also works on nail fungus and is cheaper the collodiol silver I know collodiol silver kills 98.7% of all fungus known to man so in the very very rare case tea tree oil doesn't work, I might give the silver a try. Try to find somebody that makes it. I make it much better and stronger then at the store. The only cost is about one spoon full of baking soda haha for 20 gallons this would cost you 51,200$ at the store or orderd online at this potency I know its a huge rip off seeing how I can make it for .02 cents and at a much better quality you can make your own. Tea tree oil should work fine 5$ last a year whelp coming her I assume answered my question is it safe to take 2 teaspoons a day of Sodium Bicarboate. I removed all salt from my diet will I've always had 100% salt free diet hated it since I was a kid so that 2 teaspoons is all I can have. Somebody had said they used 5 teaspoons a day for 5 years on here or was it 8 teaspoons lol? he is still alive didn't mention any side effects so I assume using 2 tea spoons of Sodium Bicarbonate a day is fine and that is my only salt intake as well....

Kitty;

You are right on about the tea tree oil as a microbe killer and you are also right about colloidal silver (CS) doing the same. And if you have your own silver maker, CS is cheap too as you point out. Silver will kill bacteria too as well as fungus and viruses.

I see so many "problems" that might be microbe related and folks need to remember to try an anti viral/fungal/bacterial to see if that is an underlying issue to their problem. The medical community rarely knows what to do about viruses.

I'll also compliment you on observing that purchasing CS retail is a "rip off" and making your own costs virtually nothing. I give it away to friends. And you are so right that the retail usually has very low ppm which is key to killing the infection... mine is about 100 ppm.

Hello Msdir:

You are doing the right thing in getting a colloidal silver generator for yourself.

I have two. One I've used for nearly 20 years. The last one I got was via the internet, just google something like "colloidal silver generators economical"...something like that.

Two ways to make it: The "purist" way...takes thirty minutes. The fast way, takes about five minutes. I use the latter.

I've done it the "fast" way for 19 years with amazing results. The only trick is to add twenty grains of sea salt to give the purified water (90 degrees) conductivity. Immediately the silver will be seen coming off the negative pole. That two cup mixture will be diluted with purified water by 32 cups...that is you have a concentrate that you can see visibly and that you will dilute by an added thirty two cups of water. Not cold water. At that point you cannot see any "milkiness" or tinting to the water but you know for a fact the silver is there....just waiting to pounce on unsuspecting viruses.

The slow method does not use any conductivity and after thirty minutes you will see a color to the water. You now have silver in the water but the quality is at least in color different. Some adherents argue that the slow method is the best. I disagree. Nothing works like success and the "fast" method has proven itself again and again. The fast method produces a silver with a wider surface area than the slow. To the "slow" makers, the smaller surface area is superior but I've read at least one report that argues the wider surface area is better...the wider surface being able to kill more viruses. Whatever, the fast method has worked and worked. So I'm content with the fast method.

By the way, the amount of salt into the mixture is NOT so much (twenty grains) as to produce any residue of creamy silver particless in the bottom of the jar. So no silver compound has been produced. And in using the tiny silver strands to make the silver over 19 years, those strands which I started with are still the same ones...not worn down by thousands of productions. So the point is a very TINY amount of silver is being used. But just a tiny amount is needed to kill billions of virus invaders.

I take my CS five times weekly...about three tablespoons per dose and often use the CS in an irrigation. My skin is not grey or blue...perfectly white.

Do not refrigerate the CS.

Keep in a dark room temp cabinet.

Welcome to the wonderful world of becoming a virus/fungus KILLER!!!!

Regarding the Colloidal Silver...DO NOT add anything to the water, it changes the chemical structure of the silver particle, you must use pure water, I use water bought from supermarket. I own silverwell generator, look on this site for lots of great information. For toenail fungus you can spray silver on that but personally I think teatree oil would work faster.

Loved to Bicarb, could not shake a flu with mucus constantly running down back of my throat and staying in sinuses giving me dull headaches, so had enough and decided to alkalize and bicarb is most alkaline thing to use so been taking 1tsp in morning in water and because bicarb depleats magnesium been taking quarter tsp epsom salts in glass water at night. 5th day now and feeling so much better going to do this for a week until I kill it.

Hello, you may have what I was diagnosed with as you have almost identical symptoms. My GI doctor went in with a scope & told me that I have something called Gastritis. It is when the protective coating of your stomach gets compromised. Meaning it gets thinned out & then exposes your stomach directly to the acid. It can cause ulcers & other problems. In short, gastritis looks like a rash in your stomach. Mine was on the lower half of my esophagus, my stomach and in the first part of my intestines. I had severe pain on my left side just under my rib but had puking boughts every morning & within 20 minutes of eating anything tomato based, milk, butter, dairy in general, coffee. For anyone trying to treat acid reflux by drinking milk like I had tried. Don't, it's an acid! Who knew right? In short, the best thing I was prescribed out of everything was the combo of avoiding said acidic foods and getting prescribed Nexium. After about a month I started to heal. Also, the docs will all want to prescribe you a gammut of other meds that they will tell you are almost identical to Nexium. THEY ARE NOT! They don't work as well & that's a BS story that is really about most insurance companies making them prescribe other things first so they don't have to pay for what works right away. No lie. Now I get acid reflux occasionally. My fix for that is Antacid Chews. They come in cherry & work within 2 minutes! Hope this helps. I thought I was dying up until all of this!

I had taken Sodium Bicarbonate powder about 1 tsp in a glass of water first thing in the morning and also 1 tsp at bedtime for 6-7 days. Later on the quantity was reduced to about 1/2 tsp for another week. In all for about 15 days. I felt completely releived of my sevear acidity and heart burn problem. I have stopped continuous use because I am not sure how long Sodium Bicarbonate can be consumed safely. I shall be extremely thankful if any one can guide me weather it is safe to consume SB on daily basis?

Swatantra... Sodium Bicarbonate has a lower toxicity than table salt and is quite safe to use over long periods. Your body needs the bicarbonate not only to help alkalize the intestines and the body, but also for increasing the oxygenation of cells.

If you are worried about taking too much, take the bicarbonate remedy for 5 days and then have a rest for two days. The need for bicarbonates and alkalizing is completely dependent on the food you eat so if you are eating acid foods all the time then you will have to continuously alkalize your body using this remedy.

It is also beneficial to alkalize the cells with the lemon/lime, water and bicarbonate remedy given on this site. Taking just the Sodium Bicarbonate with water will alkalize the blood. Taking the lemon/lime, water and bicarbonate remedy will alkalize the body cells. Both these remedies should also be taken to achieve correct overall alkaline adjustment of the body.

If you have acidity and reflux problems then you should also take Betaine Hydrochloride and pancreatic enzymes at mealtimes. The reason you have acidity is probably because of low stomach acid and the acidity you are experiencing is not occurring in the stomach but is probably occurring in the duodenum, which is wrapped around the stomach.

You can test this yourself by supplementing either ordinary vinegar or apple cider vinegar at mealtimes. If this relieves your acidity and reflux then you have too little acid in your stomach. This relieves the low stomach acidity problem because Vinegar and Apple Cider Vinegar are acidic -- so this increases stomach acidity to correct levels again. However, I must add here that although Vinegar and ACV can relieve the symptoms -- it is NOT a cure because it just relieves the symptoms and does not address the root cause -- which is lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. To cure the problem, you must have a source of Chloride for the stomach to generate hydrochloric acid for itself. This is why you must take betaine hydrochloric acid. Other sources of chloride that you can also supplement which will counteract the low acidity prroblem are sea salt (Sodium Chloride) and Magnesium Chloride.

Many many thanks Bill for your valuable advice. Before facing my ailments head on please pardon me for dragging this a bit further to have a better understanding of the issue. I shall be grateful if you can spare some more time for this.

I'm in early sixties burdened with acute acidity, loud belching, bloating, heart burns, reflux, once in a while burning pains on left side near the ribs (probably after consuming too much fried foods), occasional sleep paralysis and uneasy breathing due to bloating, recently developed minor umbilical hernia, colds/allergies (frequent sneezing, running nose, blocked right nose esp at night) forgetfulness and what not for many years. I have a feeling it all started about 20 years back after I got my teeth cavities filled up with Mercury amalgam. But I try to control all these through proper diet, preventions, yoga, acupressure, "Ayurveda", home remedies and valuable tips from such web sites to great extent. I want to stay clear of modern medicine. Please help me with the following issues:

1. When you say SB can be consumed over long periods does it mean throughout your life time? I had always felt the need for it after 15 when I had discontinued it days as reported in my first post. I was bit concerned over this issue because of the following observations from different websites :

  • Few websites were of the opinion that SB should not be taken for more than 15 days at stretch. Although not stating whether it can be resumed after a certain gap or not. Thanks you have made it clear.

  • The content of Sodium in SB was also a subject matter of discussion on some websites as far as its effect on BP/Hypertension etc. But some websites gave results of clinical trials establishing conclusively that the Sodium of SB is free of any adverse effects on BP/Hypertension etc. It may be related to chloride content of NaCl etc.
The timing of dosage was also discussed on some websites and it was concluded that SB should never be taken on full stomach or just after meals. It should be taken only on empty stomach or few hours after meals as this may cause bloating which coupled with full stomach may cause utter discomfort and even severe consequences.

    2. Regarding alkalizing the blood & cells with SB & Lime are these two separate destinations? Doesn't the blood carry the medicine to cells? What about the standard dose you advocate for SB?

    3. Please name the Magnesium Chloride & pancreatic enzymes rich food items available naturally as SC is. Incidentally we are using SC (sea salt) most of the time already.

    4. By taking ACV at mealtimes and also MC etc. please clarify in what manner, quantity & whether before, during or afterwards the meals.

    5. I shall be extremely thankful if you can suggest me the treatments which cover my ailments better.

This is an unbelievable website - nothing short of a treasure island. Take as much as you want. I keep coming back to consult. As a matter of fact I had always wished to start a web site on the same lines incorporating "Ayurveda", "Yoga", acupressure etc. as well. Thanks for saving my time. I may not do it now. This is about the best I have seen so far. Congratulations on your wonderful efforts. You are doing the humanity a great service. Keep it up.

However, there is a mild sense of disappointment when I find most of the treatments/medicines given on the website do not actually seem to cure but suppress the symptoms giving short term relief only. You have also admitted it. This may lead to getting addicted to these medicines as well.

I am not sure how far it is practical if you can work on having a team of willing doctors/ specialists to give their opinions as well on the remedies being experimented with, a well equipped lab to analyze the chemistry behind the remedies and above all clinical trials to get a better insight into the treatment and establish conclusively the ultimate cure.

In India there is a well known proverb "pehla sukh nirogi kaya" which conveys - first & foremost happiness (in life) is a body free of ailments. Who will disagree with this? Let us all strive to achieve this on priority.

Finally as far as this website is concerned hats off again and a very loud 'YEA' for it. I don't mind getting addicted to it.

p.s. I have resumed taking SB once again after you have alleviated my doubts. It's my 20th day with half a teaspoon of SB with one lime juice as you have prescribed, first thing in the morning (just 1 dose) & I'm feeling comfortable both with my acidity & colds. I had missed a dose one day & the next day I felt I shouldn't have. I have a feeling I should be taking the night dose as well. Incidentally we enrich our drinking water with a pinch of Lime as well. I will try ACV a little later. A very big THANKS to you once again

I think you're right. I think that may have been a heart attack too. I had one 4 years ago so I know.

I get gas, reflux, etc too, but a tums, cold water, almost anything going down your throat should at least change the feeling and the pain for a short while. If it doesn't change, it's probably your heart. I think taking the baking soda was just a coincidence and the angina may have been subsiding at the same time.

Please get a stress test and a scan. The doctors saved my butt luckily. I had my heart attack at 44 years old. Two of my arteries were blocked, I now have three stents in my heart and I've lost 45% of the function of my heart. Don't let this happen to you. 2. Filter your water and shower water: Chlorine causes heart disease as does fluoride.

    3. Take as much Spirulina as you can - 40 grams a day is a good start. You need the protein.

    4. Start taking at least 2mg of Magnesium chloride or Magnesium citrate from a quality supplier. Keep some handy. If you get chest pains, take another 2mg Magnesium is emergency room medicine for heart patients - why? Because people are deficient in it, that's why their hearts are giving out. It also helps prevent and undo the calcification of the arteries, relaxes the heart.

    5. Get Cayenne pepper super hot in pills. If you get chest pains or heart attack, together with the magnesium, take that stuff. Known to stop heart attacks.

    6. Start taking quality fermented (if possible) organic rice protein - I recommend Boku Protein, or Sun warrior protein every day. You need the protein, this is easily absorbable. Don't over do it though. Relaxes the heart, helps the body rebuild.

    7. Plenty of clean water, but not too much. Don't stress the kidneys out. Relax, take it easy. If you have stress in your life, take practical steps to remove it.

Go nuts on the spirulina. It's a food not a supplement. It has everything you need. Do not supplement with iron. Get your blood levels for Iron tested by blood test. If it is high, donate blood to a blood bank to help relieve excess iron. Excess iron is common and can kill you from heart attack as well. Excess calcium is also a problem do not take calcium supplements unless under direction of a naturopath or doctor who has properly tested to determine you are deficient (most westerners are NOT).

Get adequate mid day sunshine. VERY important also. At least 30 minutes in full mid day sunshine to at least 50% of the body is preferable. Do not shower until the following morning if possible. This is giving you Vitamin D3 in the sulfate form which is best. If youc an't do this, get supplements, they are cheap. Vitamin D3, not D2. Take 5000 to 10,000mg per day.

    Acid Reflux

Hi I have occasional acid refulx and my wife has it severe at times. DO NOT TAKE ACV for Acid Reflux! It just doesn't make any sense. Acid Reflux is an Acid - you neutralize Acids with Bases (Alkaline).

    pH less than 7 = Acidic, pH > 7 = Basic (Alkaline). Vinegar pH = 3ish
An antacid is any substance, generally a base, which counteracts stomach acidity. In other words, antacids are stomach acid neutralizers. I truly believe that adding an ACID to your stomach to reduce Stomach Acid is the wrong approach. You should add a BASE like baking soda. Rolaids & Tums are both Calcium Carbonate. Alka-Seltzer is Soduim BiCarbonate. Baking Soda = Sodium BiCarbonate. In the duodenum, gastric acid is neutralized by sodium bicarbonate. So Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) is used internally by the body to naturally regulate stomach Acid. The equation is HCl NaHCO3 → NaCl H2CO3. HCL = HydroChloric (Stomach) acid
    NaHC03 = Baking Soda.

Just add a little bit of baking soda to some water, swirl it around, and drink it. Within a few minutes you will belch. The belch is the gas released when the baking soda neutralizes your stomach acid (or if its crept into your throat it will neutralize it there). You will feel much better immediately. Baking Soda is completely safe.
'Why would you ever want to add an acid (vinegar) to another acid (HCL) with the hopes of reducing acid? That doesn't make any sense.

Vinegar is acetic acid (CH3COOH). Some of these recipies recommend you add Baking Soda to ACV. When vinegar is added to sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), it produces a volatile mixture of carbonic acid rapidly decomposing into water and carbon dioxide bubbles, making the reaction "fizz". It is exemplified as the typical acid-base reaction in school science experiments. The salt that is formed is sodium acetate. Basically, this little experiment proves that its better to just take baking soda. The Vinegar is the acid and the Baking Soda is the base. The Baking Soda neutralizes the acid. Its the same way in your stomach, just add the Baking Soda and it will neutralize the acid. All you need is about a teaspoon of baking soda in an ounce or two of water. Problem solved immediately.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

I read a message from James from Houston who took issue with using acid (apple cider vinegar) to fight stomach acid (HCl). It should be noted that vinegar is classified as a "weak" acid whereas HCl is a strong acid. In spite of the fact that both are acids, a weak acid will still react with a strong acid and diminish the acidity. The final result may not rise above the pH of the weak acid, but it is a significant improvement over the pH of the strong acid.

I wanted to add on to Ted's feedback on the objection to Apple Cider Vinegar for acid reflux.

It must be understood what the cause of the reflux is. Depending on the cause, the response will be different.

For some, the cause of the reflux is a production of too much acid, in which case, lemon juice in water, baking soda, and if chosen, an antacid of some sort.

However, for others, the cause of the reflux is not that too much acid is made, but too LITTLE acid. You can tell if you have little or no burping when you use baking soda as your remedy. The reason for the reflux in this case is not acid, but fermentation of food that is just sitting in your stomach. This means the remedy called for would be MORE acid. In which case, vinegar is very helpful.

The reason for adding 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to vinegar is to help stop the burning effect of vinegar as you drink it. However, if you can stand it, vinegar at full strength with no reduction is recommended in this case.

    Dear James,
These is alot of science in that post but its not to accurate. ACV may be acid to taste but it forms an alkaline "ash" once digested. ACV is an excellent remedy on its own diluted in water (not mixed with bicarb etc) if sipped through out the day. It simulates digestive enzyme function. Using for low HCL reflux is best. For best results with high HCL reflux try the Lemon/bicarb formula or Citric acid/bicarb formula!

This worked great for my heart burn. But I was concerned that after one sip of 1/8th teaspoon baking soda to 1 cup water made me sneeze about 30 times and I felt like thowing up to the point I kept VERY close to the bathroom (in a 5 minute span)... but now that I'm done sneezing, my heart burn is gone.

It didn't seem to make sense to take ACV for a tummy that felt so full of air plus the pain, but it worked! We started with 1t diluted with a bit of warm water. Immediate relief! A bit of pressure and distension left was cured by another teaspoon ( 1T warm water). Cool!

Love how EC keeps it simple and tries to get to causes. So, to the cause of the tummy blowing up... At raw food school, I learned about the different chemicals our bodies produce to digest food. To oversimplify, when we mix foods that require acid (protein) and foods that require enzymes (carbs), we are operating competing systems. This can cause the tummy to blow up and hurt. We may not know which system is winning. However, that said, it seems the vinegar cure works for me and my friend regularly... that is, whether there's too much acid or not enough.

I do eat some single food meals which was recommended to me for good digestion. And the paleo diet concept rings true for me. I imagine, as our bodies evolved for 200,000 years, we grazed and hunted and ate one food at a time.

    Keepin' it simple!

Now honestly I do not have any symptons I drank southern comfort last night for the first time in years. The cure for me was, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in the morning and night, still taking omeprazole in the day. NO CHOCOLATE OR FAT WHAT SO EVER. Porridge for break fast. No more pain honest.

I use baking soda in all my drinking water for better health in general. Use only enough too nuturalize the acid found in nearly all municipal water supplies and [unbeliveably] in bottlrd water too.I got relief from acid reflux, not nearly as much cold or sinus problem, and better joint condition.I did the PH test several times and found a pinch of baking soda about the size of the small finger nailin every glass or bottle of store bought water does the job. Most people have an acidic Body PH and the object is to keep the body PH above 7. 7.2 would be great. There are many other health benifits to this. 6 to 8 glasses per day recomended, the water taste better too. If you mix the soda with water and can taste the soda you are using too much. Baking soda is very good for acne. I've been using it as a face wash in place of soap for the last 6 months, and I have seen a great difference. However, I wash my face with castile soap in the mornings in the shower as well. I do the baking soda when I wash my face at nite. Make a paste, rinse, etc

Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) for Acne

My son is 12 years old and has bad acne for about 1 1/2 years. I tried many of the over the counter products: cleansers, facial scrubs, toners, astringents, and moisturizers, but nothing worked. While doing some house cleaning using sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and water it occured to me to try that for a face wash for him. I made a paste and have him use it every morning and every night ~ he uses it like any other facial cleanser and it has been fantastic! The pimples have shrunk in size and many are gone. His pores are much smaller. It doesn't burn, sting, or dry out his face. And best of all, it is really inexpensive.

I started gently washing my face and body with Baking soda, I haven't used soap at all and find my skin complexion to be clear, and my body is not that itchy. I do have a question about long term use of baking soda on the face? Has anyone out there been using it long term??

I was a big acne suffer for many years. I've been using baking soda and diluted peppermint soap for over 2 years as a facial wash. I found that baking soda is a great exfoliate when added to the natural cleanser. I also use baking soda as a body exfollient once per month. My skin is clear and soft. I have recently begun using coconut oil as a moisturizer. At one time any type of moisturize would have exacerbated my acne. In essence, you are on the right track.

it is probably the olive oil. for me olive oil makes me break out even though my skin is more prone to dryness. sesame oil makes me break out too. i usually do not have pimples pretty much ever - so i can tell soon whether or not something is causing me to break out and i've used either olive oil or sesame oil and the very next day had a cystic type pimple show up!

try using another oil - castor oil works for me - virgin coconut oil works good too - but my skin is too dry for the VCO.

Spots and acne are the body's way in some people of getting toxins out of the body. Some natural products will actually encourage toxin removal by triggering rashes or spots. What that really should tell you is that your diet is wrong. All detox symptoms - rashes, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc. , are coming from within and the the only ways the stuff can get there is through the mouth and skin from the food we eat or the chemical-based skin products and make-up etc. , that we use. 'You are what you eat' is a very true statement. The more sugar and processed carbs we eat the more likely it is that our bodies will have to detox. Cleaning up the diet and concentrating on fresh natural foods and pure water is the key but it won't necessarily stop the spots and acne overnight - the body will have to clear the toxin backlog first.

I suffer from acne also. I have yet to try the baking soda on my face but I plan on doing so soon. As for which oils to use, I use Jojoba Oil, 2-3 drops is plenty enough. If you use to much you will look oily, but I read that a study on Jojoba Oil shows that the oil is much like the sebum our body produces. And too much sebum can cause pimples; so essentially with the jojoba oil, our body doesn't need to produce as much sebum and will not over produce. I hope this was clear enough to understand!

I have a friend who is an esthetician, and she told me that after chemical peels they use the baking soda/water paste to neutralize the bad effects of the peel.

I have been using baking soda in the mornings with my face wash for over 6 months now and I have been acne free since. I am 35 and was still experiencing mild acne with more breakouts around my menstrual cycle. I don't even experience a single pimple around that time of the month! It's truly amazing to me! I started using Hydrogen Peroxide after I washed my face and shortly after I added the baking soda, so I thought it was the combo, but I started to get lazy and stopped using the peroxide, and didn't get any flare ups so now I know it was just the baking soda doing the work!

Hi Ted, I've been taking 1 tbsp baking soda in 8 oz of distilled or spring water every morning for at least 6 months. It's help clear me out in the morning and I read about in online for a cancer cure. I don't have cancer but developed adult onset asthma about 14 mths ago and then candida for over 6 mths now due to 3 weeks of antibiotics for a severe sinus infection from advair that I was on for one month last Feb. I have never been sick like this before in my entire life. I'm 54, had chronic hives for 7 years like 15 years ago but that went away. though I need claritin occasionally for itchiness I've had generally very good health til a year ago when I developed the asthma. Last night I started a 6th or 7th round of 5 days of Prednisone for severe asthma attack.

My question is if you could please tell me if taking the baking soda every morning like that okay long term??? I also take it occsionally 1/2 tspn with juice from one lemon or lime for the candida (which really helps it) is okay. I know the prednisone is very dangerous and am hoping to go to a chiropractor I know soon to do an adjustment since I read how that can cure asthma and the one I've gone to is really superb.

Hi Suzanne... The asthma and allergies you have may well be caused by candida in your body.

You should alkalize your blood 3 times a day with Ted's BS and water remedy. This should be taken 1/2 hr to 1 hour after all meals -- 1/4 to 1/2 tspn in a half glass of water.

You should also alkalize your body cells using Ted's lemon/lime, water and BS remedy. Do this at least 2 times a day outside mealtimes.

To get off the prednisone -- try taking between 900 mgs each of pantethine and pantothenic acid and take B complex vitamns once a day. Pantethine and pantothenic acid have been found to give the same beneficial effects as prednisone -- without the dangerous side-effects. As well, you should take between 300 micrograms and 900 micrograms of molybdenum daily to both neutralize the candida poisons and hydrcarbon poisons in your body. Molybdenum also acts to kill candida.

    Read this piece of research:

Baking soda is making my pH go down?? It was at 6,2-6,5 before. After taking baking soda (5-7,5ml 3-5 times per day) it's 5,5-5,9. How is this possible? I've had this experience multiple times. Please would you tell me the actual quantities of lemon and bicarb to mix for alkalizing / cancer cell prevention, as have followed your details, and sometimes it just doesn't stop fizzing. Also lemons can be different sizes, as can spoons. So a dosage guidance would be great. Have also heard that once you have been taking it for a while, can drop to just one drink in the am, instead of both amm and last thing at night too.

Also have been reducing my dose of propranolol 40 mg, as was prescribed for anxiety, and blood pressure going up, but am sure it was just when I was in the surgery. I am now down to less than 20 mg a day, and feel much better, and wondered whether the Apple Cider Vinegar would be good to mix too. I was recently told I was magnesium deficient, and the same person said that could have been the problem right from the begininng, as lack of magnesium can cause anxiety, palpitations, amongst hoards of other things. Jim Humble, founder of MMS and the Genesis II Church Of Health And Healing just released an article debunking the "myth" of alkalizing for health. I have no master degree in biology or pathology, but I do have a bachelor understanding of the acid -alkali balance. I have a pathology textbook with a whole chapter devoted to "disturbances in homeostasis" with PH "imbalance" included. Millions of people don't take acid reducing pharmaceuticals for nothing. I agree w/ Jim that the human body has multiple layers of dealing with PH balance, but he doesn't address the many conditions (diseases) that can disrupt this balance. None-the-less, he simply states that there is nothing you can do (dietary speaking, including antacids) to alter your PH.

From what I can understand, this area of health/disease study is evolving and everyone here on the "PH balanced for life" side needs to read Jim's take, and Jim needs to read the "disturbances in homeostasis" chapter.

As for immediate application, a properly balanced body is one with no nutritional deficiencies; and proper PH especially needs the entire 72 minerals that were available in our Paleolithic ancestor's diet.
