Vaccination Side Effects in Pets
1 NAY 1 WARNING! 239 SIDE EFFECTS
[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/31/2007: Gretchen (gjaccino@bellsouth.net) from Stone Mountain, GA writes: "I had a long haired Siamese cat who died at 19 years old, last year. She was spayed and fully vaccinated, except feline leukemia for about 6 years. She became an inside cat primarily, but was exposed to a variety of other animals we had over the years. She was completely and totally healthy for her last 13 years with absolutely NO vaccinations. I now have two one year old cats from the same litter (1 spayed, 1 neutered)and both have had inital Rabies shots. We also have a 9 year old dog, mixed lab who was vaccinated last year. I DO NOT want to have them vaccinated again, but I worry about heart worm. How can I get them tested annually without all the rest?"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/30/2007: Claudia from Chicago, Illinois USA writes: "My 15 year old indoor cat was vaccinated on May 25th for a Rabies vaccine. She was only vaccinated 13 years before and never again since she was healthy and I did not think she would need any vaccines since she never went outdoors. Well, she died today. I took her to the vet on Friday June 27th because she had not been eating for a week and was only drinking and would just lay and not move much. The vet found 2 lumps on her throat, Swollen glands was what he thought, the x-rays showed that her kidneys where enlarged and she was also jaundice. I was informed on Saturday that the lumps where cancerous, and nothing could be done to save her. SHE WAS FINE AND PERFECT HEALTH IN MAY!!!
All of a sudden she has 2 lumps??? CANCER!!
I have heard that vaccines are not required for older indoor cats and I truly wish I did not vaccinate her. THe vet is not offering any information on the matter. PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT VACCINATE your older cats. I know she would still be with me if I never vaccinated her. Here is what I noticed. she stopped playing around and only hung around in the basement. She slowly stopped eating her favorite treats, then dry, then wet food and only drank water. ALOT of water. Her urine was orangy and VERY strong. She sometimes could not make it to her littler box and would urinate in plastic bags or clothing. I noticed her breathing heavy and yellow around her ears and gums and took her to the vet.
She was 15 and was a Tonkinese mix. As she lay having to fight for every breath, her legs where all stiff and she was not blinking. I pet her softly and told her it was OK to go and she managed to let out a painful MEOW and her body started shacking and she passed. I wish no one else has to go thru loosing they pet like I did. I feel that vets hold back on information such as the side affects and dangers. I know some vaccines are harmful to humans. AT 4 years old my daughter received 3 vaccines and 24 hours later I found her not breathing on the bathroom floor. She now uses a breathing machine and has severe Asthma. I no one in my family or her fathers family have asthma, and I never smoked or no one around us smoked ever. I think the government is not being upfront with us."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/28/2007: Jennie from Soldotna, Alaska writes: "My kitty was only 8 months old when he died yesterday. I tried everything to save him. The vet couldn't figure out what was wrong. The only thing he ever recieved was a rabies vaccination. After that he went down hill. He started with diarrhia, and it was incurable. Then he started throwing up, drooling. He didn't make it. Vaccinations are bad for humans, why would they be ok for our pets?"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/24/2007: Katie from Terre Haute, IN writes: "I boarded my Maltese and Yorkie at the Vet's office for a week and was told I had to get the Bordetella Vaccine for my Yorkie and Maltese. A week later, when I picked them up they were both wheezing and coughing. It seems the vaccine caused this instead of preventing it."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/19/2007: Lori from Columbia, SC writes: "I have read all of the negative comments from everyone regarding vaccinations and I will admit seeing some allergic reactions in my time mostly hives and facial swelling that responded to antihistamines. When you have a puppy in your clinic that dies of distemper because it never received a puppy shot or you have to tell a small child that you were unable to save their friend because the puppy never received any vaccines and was too far gone with parvo virus to save, it is hard. At our practice we do talk about risk factors for vaccination and treat each pet individually. SC is a 3 year rabies state so we only vaccinate rabies every three years. I have done titers on some pets that did not have a protective titer even 6 months after vaccination and others that needed multiple vaccines to pass their titer test for going to foreign countries. Vets are not just out for a buck they have studied immunology and infectious diseases. Viruses can not be treated with antibiotics and often are deadly when contracted. If one of your pets dies unexpectedly rather than guess at the cause have the state diagnostic lab perform a necropsy. Vaccines have saved more pets lives than have injured pets from side effects. When the vaccines companies test for safety they give a 10 time dose of vaccine to see if it causes any ill effect on small and large dogs."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/18/2007: Bob from Houston, USA writes: "my 3yr old cat was given a rabies shot on Sunday. Within hours she became lethargic. Then she began to cough a little. The next day a little more. The next day she started throwing up her food a little bit. She's going to the vet tomorrow. No more shots for my pets.
My 8 year old chihuahua had all shots recommended when he was small, his urine turned orange & he threw up. He's fine now but no more shots."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/11/2007: Laura (lasme8@yahoo.com) from West Babylon, New York writes: "re 3-Yr Rabies Vaccine -- My 2 year old Border Collie has changed since receiving the vaccine in May. Calm submissive puppy has become semi-agressive and has had first seizure on July 10. Vet testing to see if he can determine cause of seizure and am afraid that another will happen. I vow not to get any vaccines ever again, desite laws. I just won't take him to places that require it, like agility comp, etc. I pray that I don't lose my best friend."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/02/2007: Beverly (beverly1320@yahoo.com) from Cincinnati, OH writes: "I have a rescue baby named Gizmo who is 2 1/2 years old. He is mostly chihuahua but has a little something else. I took him to the vet for his Parvo shot and the next morning he was vomiting. I tried to pick him up and he screamed. I took him back to the vet and was told he most likely had a reaction to the shot. His lipaise levels were high and he was still vomiting. I was sent home with antibiotic.I had a feeling that I was not being told the whole story and went back and demanded a copy of my dog's records. They gave my 11 pound dog a shot for a 123 pound dog! I was told it didn't matter, they get the same dosage! My dog will never return to that vet, ever. I am very careful about my dog's health and he only goes out on a leash. I know he was healthy when he went to the vet. It has been two weeks and he is still having some problems. He is due for more blood work at the end of this week. I feel like I paid someone to try and kill my dog!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/30/2007: Aimee from Reno, Nevada writes: "Pets section, vaccines: "I lost a wonderful kitty that I was graced with for eight years due to a rabies vaccine. All four of my cats were given this same vaccine on the same day at the same place, but Spunky was the one who developed a Feline Fibrosarcoma due to a genetic predisposition among strays in our county. The shot was given in the shoulder, which is the old method for pets (ALWAYS have shots given in the back leg as you can amputate if necessary). Soon after he developed what felt like a small hard knot on his shoulder bone, which quickly grew in size. Biopsy showed it to be a cancerous tumor with tiny tendrils that extended out and into the surrounding tissue. Due to its location it could not be removed. Spunky made it seven more months before passing, but not before suffering like any cancer patient would. He went through chemotherapy and received the best possible veterinary care through a local vet and through the wonderful people at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in Davis, California. His cancer was CAUSED by a vaccine manufactured by the company Fort Dodge, which has a history of this type of vaccine tumor arising in all kinds of pets. Since pets are considered "property" and not as an actual life, there are no grounds to sue this company. What they did was make a pitiful offer of a few hundred dollars for compensation. Spunky's medical bills for this cancer were well over three-thousand dollars. I have since learned that adult cats who are INDOORS ONLY do NOT need to have yearly vaccinations. I have also had several vets tell me this, and that they personally do not have their cats vaccinated because of the risks associated with it. Please heed my warning and do not allow your pet to be vaccinated in the shoulder OR with vaccine manufactured by Fort Dodge. Spunky has been gone for almost four years, and a day does not go by that he is not on my mind somewhere. I miss him terribly and hope to spare his fate for as many others as possible. Thank you!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/20/2007: EJ from Boston, MA writes: "I read all the comments about reactions to vaccinations for dogs, but has anyone had any bad experiences with cat vaccinations? Mine is not due for her Rabies again until next year. Any input would be great. thanks"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/19/2007: Teresa from Austin, Texas, USA writes: "Our LhasaApso was given a bordetella vaccination to prevent. One week later she developed a severe dog cough and scared us a great deal. Our neighbor commented that her dog also had the same type of cough after the same vaccination. Children's cough syrup helps keep the cough under control. We were not informed when the vaccination was administered that this would happen. In effect, the vaccination for "dog cough" creates "dog cough."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/18/2007: Carmen from Lawndale, California writes: "I adopted a 12 week old jack russell terrier in june 2006, as recommended by so many pet owners i immediately took her to a vet for an exam and shots. After the well puppy examination she was given all her shots but one, her rabies vaccine. Because of her age that one had to wait. After receiving har rabies shot within hours she started to vomit and shake. Once we got that under control she fell asleep. Within a few minutes she started having seizures they lasted all night. Upon calling the vet in the morning all they said was they'd note it in her file give her benedryl she'll be fine. If not bring her in. never again will my dog have another rabies shot until a blood serum test is given first. After some research I discovered that all dogs regardless of breed, size, or weight are given the same amount of rabies vaccine."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/17/2007: Veronica from Greer, SC writes: "It's me again. The one with the husky/lab mix pups. They just turned 18 mo on Sat.We lost our male this past Mon. He hadn't had any seizures since April 23.Sun. he was having cluster seizures;about every 2-3 hrs. He was howling, barking, and whining after coming out of each one. That is the worst thing my family has ever gone through. My female will NEVER get another booster shot. When I took our male to the vet he said-ironically-this is the age when "epilepsy" shows its ugly head. Duh, this is when people give their dogs their boosters, because you tell us to. I've let everyone I know not to give boosters to their dogs. There is no sense that this wonderful young dog should have died or had to go through this. I truly feel for everyone who has lost a dog so soon after booster vaccinations. It's time to get mad and take action!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 06/16/2007: Shannon from Kanab, Utah writes: "Reaction to Parvo Booster: Today our Black Lab puppy had his 9 week booster... Almost IMMEDIATELY he started showing signs that something was wrong. Two minutes after the shot, he began vomiting and lost control of his bowels. He then laid on the ground and wasn't very responsive. We took him to a local clinic and they gave him something similar to benedryl and a steroid and fluids under his skin. After about an hour he began to come around, and when we got him home he slept for most of the day. He only vomited once more and the vet told us to give him rice and canned chicken (easy on the stomach). This was VERY scary, but he seems to be pulling out of it ok."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/27/2007: thomas (tt@thomastracydesign.com) from Monreal, Quebec writes: "Re: Animal Vaccines: Just a note about pets and vets! I have a chihuahua that will be 19 on June 23. When he was 5, I needed to travel with him on a plane, and needed a certificate from my vet. After examination, I was told that not only should he NOT fly, he should be put down due to a heart murmur and poorly functioning kidneys. I took him home, so he could die with me, at his time....well, fourteen years later and not a vaccine since, he is fine! He has off days, and half a joseph's Baby aspirin does him fine! Lets STOP introducing chemicals into our pets bodies!! P.S. Stopped giving him store food as well about two years ago.....pureed steamed veg, ground beef and rice.....pure and simple!! Peace!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/26/2007: Michelle (yelklubm@yahoo.com) from New York, NY writes: "My dog, a female miniature pinscher, 12 years old, died last November from what I believe to be negative reactions from her vaccinations. I took her in on September 6th, and she received intratract II kennel cough vaccination and a 3-year rabies vaccination. Two weeks later, I came home from work and she was seizuring on the floor. She had NEVER had a seizure in her life. She was an otherwise healthy dog before these vaccinations. On November 12th, she passed away in my arms. The vets refuse to believe it was the vaccinations and say they believe it was a brain tumor, but I know better. Now that I know how harmful vaccinations are, I will never go through this again."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/23/2007: Diane from East Lyme, CT writes: "Vaccination And Seizure with My Yorkshire Terrier: I have a 5 1/2 year old Yorkshire Terrier who is also paralyzed in her left hind leg due to FCE. She was scheduled to have a total hip replacement on May 21st , so I decided to have her vaccinated for rabies and kennel cough. That was on May 10th. Then about 10 days later she started to develop a very deep cough and also had a seizure. She never had any problems before this , except for a mild collapsing trachea. This was her first kennel cough vaccine and I'm beginning to think that the seizure and the cough was the result of the vaccinations. Anybody that might have had similar experiences would be appreciated."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/22/2007: Rich from Phoenix, Arizona writes: "My dog is 17 years and is a bichon mix. He waS NEVER VACCINATED. He was picked up by the pound and vaccinated when he escaped the yard. He now suffers seizures. We need to do something to stop dog pounds from causing dogs such problems."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/17/2007: Mike from Levittown, PA writes: "Our 5 month old lab just died suddenly after a visit to the vet. He got a booster and rabies shot. He got his shots around 1PM and by 7PM he had grown sluggish and eventually crawled under our bed and passed. He was fine when my wife left the house for 2 hours only to return to find him. My daughter wondered what was up with him, but didn't know to worry. None of us did. We've never heard of pets dying from boosters. We're not sure it's the shots just yet. The vet is performing tests, but I'd be surprised if it was something else.
He was just a pup!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/08/2007: Brandi from Garibaldi Highlands, British Columbia writes: "I have an American Eskimo that is 9 years old and recently went in for a bordatella vacination. This was his 9th year of the vacination but first in Canada. Within minutes of getting the vaccine he had his first seizure. It scared me to death and the doctor told me it was because my dog was over excited. This breed is always excited and not once have I ever had a problem with seizure before. The only difference from this vaccine and the others is that the doctor put on a muzzle so he was not allowed to sneeze. My other dog, whom got the same vaccine the same day, was allowed to sneeze as normal and nothing happened to him (same breed). I don't know if this has anything to do with this but it is a difference. Also the manufacturer of the medication could be different."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 04/29/2007: Stephanie from Burlington, New Jersey writes: "When veterinarians administer vaccines, they normally have a set place of where a specific vaccine is given. For example, a canine distemper shot is usually given in the left shoulder. Sometimes the pet has thick skin that is hard to puncture, or the pet will move when the vaccine is administered. This can cause a small bump in the area that can remain for up to 2 weeks. If any itching, rash, or swelling occurs in that area, the pet should be taken to a veterinarian to have it examined. If you feel that your pet is uncomfortable after a vaccine, apply an ice cube and some witch hazel to the area to reduce swelling. Vaccine discomfort is very common, and your pet will most likely be sleepy for a day after getting an injection."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 04/25/2007: Veronica from Greer, SC writes: "It's me again. My male had another seizure on mon.I have done some more research and there is hope. If you look into epilepsy in dogs(this is the fallback "disease" the vets will tell you your dog has)on the web you will find one very helpful site. It gives some homeopathic options to rid the vaccines from their bodies along with some steroids. Also it seems a lot of breeds are more prone-my mix of husky & lab are both. Search the web and get all the info you can. Look into titer testing and waivers that keep your pets from ever being revaccinated because of the seizures. Educate everyone you know who has pets as to the side effects. The more people know the more we can speak up and stop the unnecessary hurting of our companions!"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 04/18/2007: Jill writes: "Hi; I was reading the information on your website about reactions from vaccinations. I took my 12 1/2 year old Border Collie to the vet yesterday and got her yearly shots. She had the Bordetella and Distemper/Hepatitis,parainf/parvo shots. That was at 10:55 am. At 5:30pm...she had the first of 3 seizures..all in the span of 30 minutes. She has never had a seizure before and I gave her 2 benadryl..to calm her.. She didn't have any more seizures. the rest of the night..and I took her to have a blood panel this morning. We are waiting for the results..probably by Monday. I think it was a reaction to the shots..what do you think? Sincerely, Jill"
[SIDE EFFECTS]Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Some vaccines tend to add mercury, aluminum or monosodium glutamate which causes long term neural disorder, and not just a reaction. Sometimes adding 10 cc of DMSO into one liter of drinking water helps detoxify the heavy metals and allows oxygen to reach the brain reducing the long term neural effects. A small amount of coriander mixed to the food (a couple of leaves) also help reduce the seizures and long term effect by removing heavy metals."
