Black Tea Bag Folk Cure for Pink Eye

Make a cup of black tea and allow it to cool a bit. Apply the moist tea bag to your closed eye. Keep it in place for ten minutes or so. Repeat this pink eye treatment every few hours for the 1-3 days it will take to clear up the conjunctivitis.

This time, his eye was actually getting worse instead of better. So I came on here, and decided to try the black tea. I brewed a cup and dripped it lukewarm into his eye. An hour later it was looking better than it had in two days. Put more drops in, and an hour after that there is no pink at all left in the eye-whites, and no more discharge. I'll do another treatment before bed just to keep up with it, but the improvement is truly amazing!"

I am not 100% sure it was pink eye but I woke up for the past couple days with crusty, slightly goopy eyes that were bloodshot soooo... I'm guessing that's what it is. I am so happy I found this remedy.

I used white tea bags first because that's all I had. Brewed 2 together for about 15 minutes, cooled it down then used the bags as compresses and smooshed them around my eye lids gently and dripped some tea in there, as suggested. I felt the soothing effect immediately and the redness went down a bit. I found some black tea and have now twice dripped some of that (after brewing and cooling a bit) into my eye over the course of the day, and it's really working! My eyes feel calmer and more lubricated, and the redness has gone down. Yay. Still a bit itchy but I will keep doing this until they heal. It obviously helps. THANKS!"

[YEA]  09/30/2010: Bombshell from Stanwood, Wa., Usa: "I've used Boric Acid for all kinds of eye infections. It works faster than any other remedies. When my son was a baby and began to show signs of Pink Eye, I would immediately get out the Boric Acid. I would use about half a cup of warm water and one teaspoon of Boric Acid. Mix really well until the BA is dissolved, then dip a cotton ball squeezing only some of the mixture out (so it doesn't drip all over the place), then dab the infected eye at each corner. Do this two or three times using a clean cotton ball each time. My father is a doctor of Chinese medicine, Homeopathy, and acupuncture. This is a remedy he told me about when I was a teen almost a hundred years ago : ) Don't be afraid to do this to yourself or anyone else. It does not hurt, sting or burn the eyes what-so-ever. And trust me, this works better and faster than any anti-biotic your doctor can prescribe."

[YEA]  04/04/2011: Susan from Stroudsburg, Pa replies: "Boric Acid mix worked best. Itchy, pasty, red eyes... I tried the Black Tea first, but that only relieved itchiness, which was a relief. After it did not clear up the problem, I searched to purchace boric acid as recamended, but could only find a wallgreen Steril Eye wash that contained an isotonic solution of purifed water, boric acid, sodium chloride, etc. This took three days of periodic eye washing throughout the day to completely clear it up. It definately worked to start clearing from day one. I'm wondering if I had found boric Acid to mix my own if it would have worked quicker. Defiantely worth doing."

This is why when my son got goopy eyes, followed by redness, I thought maybe it would go away too. It did not and after three days it looked much worse and swollen. When I read this post, I just laughed, but it was an option for me as I still breastfed my son (7 months old), who had pink eye. So I thought I'd try it! I squirted some in his eye the next time he ate (right after "let down") and immediately noticed a little relief in the redness. I have done it three times a day for 2 1/2 days now and can't believe the power of the breast milk! It is obviously not painful for my son and his eye just has a tiny bit of pink left! (I did the other eye every other time to ward off infection). Thank you so much for such an easy remedy!"

Antibiotic drops were not clearing up eye infections because they were viral. Now, I just use an eye dropper with expressed breast milk several times a day, and the symptoms disappear!"

11/16/2011: Matthieu from St-georges, Quebec, Canada replies: "Instead of using breast milk because it's no longer available for our 2 and 4 years old children, we use kefir whey. The protocol is to wash the eye of the child as often as needed with a clean soft cloth full of kefir whey. We had this problem at least 5 times (not close in time to each other! ) and it has always worked! The first time we got this problem, the doctor wanted to give our children anti-biotics.

We (my wife and myself) though that it would be only *logical* for kefir whey to heal that ailment because it was a bacterial infection and kefir (and kefir whey) it full of really strong bacteria that are helpful to us humans, but very lethal to other strong and bad bacteria that our body cannot easily get rid of by itself without some help. It is said that an experiment was done where they put some excrement in the kefir, and after some days the excrement (bacteria) disappeared from the kefir (and the kefir was still as good). Unfortunately there's not much studies done on this in the west and we must rely on hearsays for information about this. Reason : it's not patentable, no money to make from this.

We suggested the remedy to a couple of friends whom their children had this problem and the problem was gone really fast ... After one day of treatment, the infection begins to leave. After 3 days, nothing left.

To get a hand on this remedy, you must make yourself your own kefir (must not be commercial). You must use a good method of kefir preparation (many available online) so that the whey and the curd gets a clear separation after some time. The whey is at the bottom : siphon it off with a plastic hose. You can get the hose at an hardware store. To help with your search, look for a plastic hose replacement used for ice making modules in fridges. When you siphon off, it doesn't matter if there's some curd (white clogged milk particles) in it.

If the eye infection is of viral nature, I don't know if this remedy will help (but should not worsen). But if it's of a bacterial nature, it will surely work for you. And I suppose most eye infections are caused by bad bacteria.

Always treat both eyes. After putting in eyes they will blur some from oil but will not sting at all and will be very soothing, castor oil is antimicrobal and a very healing oil."

I've been playing around with castor oil for a couple of weeks to test it out - rubbing it on my face to try and reduce age spots, using it as a scalp treatment for my thin hair and wiping it on my eyelashes to see if they'll grow thicker and longer. For my face and eyes, I rub the castor oil (cold-pressed) over my face and eyes every evening and then go to bed.

Last night I woke up with my eyelashes gummed together and my eyes seeping and red raw. I was seeing my GP today anyway to check my thyroid, and he asked me what I'd done to my eyes. I told him (embarassing! ) and he said that castor oil should never be put in the eyes as it has a really high pH or some such and he checked my eyes for nerve damage. On doing some research, apparently castor oil contains a natural toxin called ricin that can cause conjunctivitis. Anyway, that's how castor oil has affected me so far..!"

[YEA]  01/09/2009: Margaret from Lockport, Il: "My son has had pink eye several times and we went thru a phase with no insurance so, my friend suggested very hot Chamomile tea bags pressed to the infected eye for 2-3 minutes 4x per day. Also, just a very hot compress is effective. The key is to catch the pink eye early on and use the compresses several times. You do have to be careful not to burn you cheeks. The heat of the compresses must kill the bacteria in the eyes. Do this for 3-4 days and you should be pink eye free."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  06/30/2011: April from Fort Myers, Florida replies: "I came down with pink eye this past Sunday. On monday I went to the doctor who gave me eye drops. By yesterday, Wednesday, my eye was only getting worse. It was practically swollen shut, though I had no goop or anything coming out of it; it was just swollen and bright red--stinging like hell. The doctor gave me different eye drops, an antibiotic, and Claritin D which all cost me $100 in prescriptions. It didn't help either.

Finally, a friend brought me chamomile tea and told me to put 2-3 drops in my eyes 3-4 times a day, as well as put the tea bag over my eye and rest with it on there. The tea bag is more effective while hot, but it can also soothe when it's cold too.

My pink eye hasn't cleared up completely but it has definitely improved a lot since I started using the tea. I later looked up "VIRAL" pink eye online to find that there are no antibiotics that can help it. When it's VIRAL it has to just take it's course. So I'm a pretty upset that although the tea has helped immensely, the doctor's allowed me to spend $400 by the end of the week for visits and prescriptions, without mentioning that none of it would help... From now on I will be coming to this web site before paying another dime to a doctor."

Two drops in each eye of colloidal silver twice a day for two days cured it every time. Don't use the silver for more than two days; it will start erroding some of the layer of the eye. That happened to my mother once when she overdid the use of the silver. But the tissue healed and in four or five days she no longer had the blurred vision... And the pink eye was gone. [YEA]  10/10/2011: Mr Thompson from Springfield, Ill replies: "Works pretty good! I had pink eye on and off for several weeks now. Don't know really the cause but it got a hold on me. Green Tea Bags are a immediate relief but it is much work to cook the tea and do the procedure because you have to hurry as the water cools down.

I put clean coconut oil into a clean syringe (without the needle :D) and let it melt in it while holding it at my body. When it got fluid I put two drops into my eyes before sleeping.

My eyes feel a lot better in the morning after the first treatment. No more dry or too wet feeling and much more calmed. It seems that the special fatty acids repair tissue and kill bacteria. First I was scared to drop it into my eyes but there is no burning or anything. But just make sure everything is as clean as possible.

This one treatment was much more effective than weeks of green tea."

How to Use: Brew a cup or two of coffee as strong and dark as possible. Dip a clean cotton ball in the warm coffee. Gently wipe the coffee saturated cotton ball over infected eye so coffee runs into the eye. Wipe over several times and if needed repeat with a new cotton ball. The coffee can be saved in a container for 24 hours, but be sure container is clean. DO NOT contaiminate coffee by placing used cotton ball back into coffee! Be sure to warm coffee before each use.

How often: I used this treatment once every two hours for three days. Treatment can be done more frequently to alleviate itch and inflamation associated with pink eye.

My experience: I payed $21 (USD) for a bottle of antibiotic eyedrops. I used them for the ten days as recomended. I was not cured at the end of the ten days and suffered each day with red, sore, goopy, itchy eyes because the drops didn't even alleviate the symptoms of pink eye. I used the coffee for three days and from the first treatment I was no longer suffering."

Colloidal Silver Cure for Pink Eye

Place a drop of colloidal silver in the affected eye 2-3 times a day until your pink eye (conjunctivitis) symptoms go away.
