MISDIAGNOSING RINGWORM

02/23/2009: Misdiagnosed myself from Nashville, TN writes: "I diagnosed myself with ringworm after I showed my scaly patches to friends and family and two of them said definitely ringworm. So as with anything, I skipped the doctor and started looking at Earth Clinic! (how much money have I saved over the years by coming here first?) Unfortunately I wasted a few days on your readers' suggested ringworm treatments... My diagnosis was incorrect, I actually have Pityriasis rosea, which is a virus and just has to run its course, apparently. If you think you may have misdiagnosed your ringworm, put "Pityriasis rosea" into google images. As soon as I saw the pictures I knew it was me. This rash feasts on areas that have never had much sun: breasts and butt for women, butt for men."

EC: "Pityriasis rosea is a common skin condition in children and young adults. It usually begins as one large spot on your chest, abdomen or back and then spreads. The rash of pityriasis rosea often sweeps out from the middle of your body, and its shape resembles drooping pine-tree branches." Source: The Mayo Clinic

MMS

1 YEA

[YEA]  07/25/2009: Kokila from Roslyn Heights, NY writes: "Hi, This is for all ringworm sufferers! Fungus help:

I had a very bad case of fungal skin infections (ringworm most likely) on my legs and hand. I had also a bad case of lymphedema, which I got rid of (see my other entry here), but then the stupid fungus attacked with a vengence! So I got rid of one enemy to only attract number 2! So no more swelling and pain, BUT now ITCH and sores! It was going on for a few months with almost no relief. I tried every cream/remedy known to man without success!

Despairing I told a friend, who told me: try "MMS" aka Magic Mineral Substance created by a man named Jim Humble...It cures all sorts of pathogen related viral infectious diseases. Serious ones like Malaria, Lyme diease, you name it! Skeptical I tried it! It WORKED! All the fungus is GONE! Took a few weeks...but eradicated it, even from my hand, where I had had a weird fungus for a year.

So here's my protocol:
MMS in the AM, along with topically some health food store natural fungal cream, just to protect the skin from lingering nasties.
That's it folks!
I tried: ACV, lavender/tea tree oil mix with sea salt first to dry the skin (paid $40 bucks for the download of that info...didn't work), oregano (wild) oil, garlic, multiple creams, etc. NOTHING really got rid of the torture of this fungus, except MMS. Not trying to advertise it, just spreading the word to help fellow fungus sufferers. Interestingly enough Jim Humble's simple remedy is cheap too.

Good luck...hope this helps others."

NAIL POLISH

[YEA]  11/25/2006: Sandra from Port Richey, FL writes: "My friend's son had ringworm for 6 months. No creams or meds worked. The nurse said to use clear fingernail poilish as her brothers got ringworm all the time from wrestling and it cleared up in 2 weeks."

NIZORAL DANDRUFF SHAMPOO

1 YEA

[YEA]  02/03/2007: Saura from Mooresville, NC writes: "The first time I got ringworm, I went to my doctor, who also happens to be a tropical diseases specialist. She told me to use Nizoral dandruff shampoo several times daily on the rash and it will soon dry up and disappear. She was absolutely right. My rashes disappeared within days."

NU SKIN LIQUID BANDAGE

2 YEA

[YEA]  02/20/2008: Larry from Cleveland , Ohio writes: "Nu skin bandage worked on severe ring worm in 2 days. Now, let me say that I am also drinking ACV and I tried applying ACV directly but it didn't seem to work. Tried borax and h2O2 and it dried skin but didn't seem to work. Nu skin stopped the itching right away and dried skin up. Ringworm had spread all the way around my neck and now all traces nearly gone! This is a recurring infection after Diflucan so I am really going to try and keep drinking the ACV."

[YEA]  08/26/2006: Liz from NC writes: "My roomate and I both got ringworm from a stray cat. We tried all the creams (both prescription and drugstore brands), and hydrogen peroxide (which I assume, does the same as ACV = dries it out). Nothing was working. In fact, it was even spreading. I then was told to used the liquid bandaids. I chose the spray on one because you don't have to touch the infection. It does the same thing nailpolish is supposed to do (suffocates it), however it doesn't crack off. I just kept reapplying the bandaid, and tried not to rub it off after the shower. My ringworm dissapeared in no time at all. I must say that even though I was careful about not touching it, my roomate didn't use the bandaid and her's came back several times. Mine did not come back at all."

OIL OF OREGANO

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/10/2010: Azg from Toronto, On writes: "I had a tiny incidence of ringworm on the top of my foot last summer and applied Oil of Oregano to it 3 or 4 times a day. I also put about 10 drops in a shotglass with water and threw it back (and chased it with juice). It's so powerful I just wanted to get it over with! My foot cleared up within 2 or 3 days."

ONLY PRESCRIPTION OINTMENT WORKED

1 YEA

[YEA]  09/07/2007: Fred from Charlotte, NC writes: "We've taken in numerous feral kittens to be spayed and neutered and this was probably the source of my case of ringworm on both hands. I tried various over-the-counter ointments for several months to no avail. I then tried bleach, apple cider vinager, and tea tree & lavender oil. Nothing worked for me. Sometimes it seemed to almost disappear, only to return again with a vengence. Once, I received a chemical burn to my hands from using bleach that wasn't very diluted and/or by applying ACV immediately afterwards. I was very frustrated and it was starting to spread. A doctor gave me a tube of cream that appears to have cleared it all up in just a few days. It's called Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream USP 1%/0.05% (base) It states 'Rx only' on the box. I realized that I had already tried a Clotrimazole cream that I bought over-the-counter that didn't work, but perhaps it's the other ingredient that makes this ointment so effective. The bumps and rash have completely vanished. I'm going to continue to apply it for awhile just to make certain that there's no trace left of this plague. I would have loved it if an earlier remedy had worked, especially a natural cure like ACV, but perhaps it's related to individual body chemistry or immune systems. I'll report back if this product fails, but I must say that I'm amazed at the results so far."

PAPER ASH RESIDUE

1 YEA

[YEA]  02/21/2010: Sheldon007 from Spring, Tx writes: "When I was a child I would get ringworm all the time. My grandmother would take a piece of paper burn it on a plate. when the paper was completly burnt she would blow off the ashes then use the residue left on the plate to rub over the ringworm. This would suffucate the ringworm and within days the ringworm was gone with no permanent scars."

PENNIES IN APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

1 YEA

[YEA]  02/12/2010: Star from Towanda, Pa writes: "The best way to get rid of ringworm is to take a few old pennies and place in a cup with about 5 tablespoons of apple cider vinager. let age for a day or two and rub directly on the ring worm. it will normally burn. but will work. i had ring worm so bad that it was larger than the size of a fifty cent piece. it had completely ate away all of my skin and itched terribly. it works. i have used this remedy for over 25 years, and it is yet not to work."

PREGNANT MARE URINE

1 YEA

[YEA]  12/05/2006: Kim from S.S. Marie On, Canada writes: "This past summer evening, I was chatting with my next door nieghbor who is 75 years old. He grew up on a farm in Manitoba north of Winnipeg. At 27 years old he got married, moved to Sault Ste. Marie & started working in the Steel mill. We were talking that evening about home remedies. Five weeks before he was to get married, he got ringworm on the left side of his head & face. Drove to Winnipeg & saw a specailist who gave him a cream but it wasn't working. They were going to postpone the marrage when a neighbor (who immigrated from the Ukraine), came over in his horse and buggy to deliver his invitation to attend the wedding. Saw Ed & said, "Come with me." Brought Ed to his farm, went into the barn & waited for his pregnant mare to urinate, & collected a 1/2 gallon of urine. He told Ed, "With a clean cloth, soak it in the urine & apply to infected area, 3-5 days, it will be gone, trust me". So Ed did as he was told. The first few applications "stung like hell" said Ed but in 3-5 days the ringworm was gone. He said after a few days the crust that formed started to fall off in chuncks. Needless to say they got married on their due date."

REMEDIES NEEDED

06/01/2009: Mickey from Miami, FL writes: "RINGWORM: WE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS FOR THREE YEARS NEVER THOUGHT TO CHECK ONLINE FOR ADVICE. THREE YEARS TRIED ALL THE OTC AND PRESCRIBE TOOK TOO LONG BUT IT STILL THERE. NOW I HAVE SPOTS. MY QUESTION IS HOW DO YOU CURE THE ONES ON THE SCALP SINCE EVERYTHING SAYS NOT FOR THE SCALP. WILL THE APPLE CIDER VINGER HELP WITH THAT? PLEASE HELP IT'S BEEN TOO LONG. MY POOR SON HAS IT EVERY WHERE. I THINK HE GOT IT FROM THE POOL BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO GET WORSE AFTER HE SWIMS. EITHER NOT ENOUGH CHOLRINE OR TOO MUCH. HELP HELP HELP!!!"

EC: For the scalp, you can also review the remedies here: http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/scalp_infections.html

06/02/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hi Mickey,

The exudate from the green hull on the black walnuts worked on the kerion (ringworm advanced to pus pockets and most hair gone from area)on my son's scalp years ago. This is the wrong time of year to gather walnuts with green hulls, but you should be able to find tincture of black walnuts at health food store.

I see several instances of people saying Absorbine Jr. cured their ringworm and this should also be safe to use on the scalp."

06/03/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "I get ringworm when I garden sometimes, not sure why. I came across a folk remedy where you soak a few pennies in vinegar and then after about an hour or so apply the penny to the ring worm. This thankfully worked for me since I was doing volunteer work at my daughters school and you cannot do that when you have ringworm. Not sure if it was just the vinegar, or the combo of copper and vinegar. Good luck with your son, and I hope this can work for you too. Maybe even try a washcloth soaked in vinegar and place on his head."

REMEDIES THAT DIDN'T WORK

3 NAY

[NAY]  01/04/2009: T3 from Chicago, IL writes: "I took baths with the vinegar stuff and that didn't work, athlete's foot creme, not working, back to applying the vinegar. I do not have itching or dark rings around the circle, i don't see any white in between. Dr. said fungi, the ointment didn't work either. Now years later, no job or insurance still, I'm at a loss. Spreading more, now to my legs which, I do not touch the bumps then my legs. Now what about our insides, how are we being affected? I heard we need a anibiotic as well.

Mom thinks garlic pills everyday will help. If I can't reach on my back and the others do go away, I think it will come back. But when I took baths everyday in it, that didn't work anyway. It is ugly and embarrasing, can't ever let anyone see them. I also from coming back from FL started getting like heat rashes or bumps every time I sunbathed. I didn't have that in FL, or would I had I stayed. So I have 2 battles now and no insurance. I"m worried about my insides and my vision, is what I heard. I'm already half blind anyway, so this is not helping matters. Man, I stink of vinegar right now, everyone will be looking at me."

01/04/2009: GJ from Springfield, Ohio replies: "T3from Chicago, are you sure what you have is ringworm? I have a niece who was told she had everything from ringworm to dermatitis to eczema. Much like you she battled it for several years with it spreading to different areas of her body. Certain foods and heat and sun exposure made it worse. Finally one very alert Pediatric Rheumatologist recognised her skin condition as Skin Lupus, confirmed by a skin biopsy."

[NAY]  12/15/2006: Ship from Wilmington, OH writes: "i have had ringworm since march of 2006 when i was crawling around a manure spreader for some photography shots. i first tried cutting it off and placing bleach on it at the recommendation of a wrestler. THAT HURT!! and it went away...for the summer. i suppose there were traces on my boots or something because in the fall it came right back, and it was spreading - three on each leg!. >so i steeped thyme and used the "tea paste" 2x a day, but that merely left it stagnant. it didn't grow but it didn't go away. i moved on to ginger, and instead of brewing it, i cut slices and taped it with duct tape to the spots. that was good until i went jogging and started sweating. o no! now i have ringworm and some crazy rash all around it caused by duct tape and sweat. i think i will try the cider vinegar solution and disinfect my boots and all my socks and pants. the end, or is it?"

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "A ringworm won't die. Their weakness is a saturated solution of borax and 1% hydrogen peroxide. It is a strong form of fungus. An alkaline form is more effective in the long run. If you want to really kill there is also another way, available at your local aquarium retail outlets everywhere. The anti algae bottle to control algae in fish tanks are often a solution of copper sulfate or a buffered form of copper chloride. Those are applied two or three time to the area and repeated weekly application should be more than enough. They outperform all doctor's med on fungus treatment and for less than 1/20th of the price. Fungus and ringworms major weakness are borax, and copper. There are others, but this would be best tested so far. A borax and copper solution is another possibility. Basically you will add saturated borax to the anti-algae bottle, (often it is light transparent blue in color, usually it is copper sulfate - but they don't label as such, but this is usually the case). The apply this solution to the feet or areas where there is ringworm for external application only. As far as I know this has worked better than any doctors med for topical ringworm applications."

RINGWORM VS ECZEMA

04/24/2009: Bobt2you from Starksboro, VT, USA writes: "Hello everyone!

I tried the nail polish, then red vinegar. Ringworm kept encroaching upon this largest of our organs, the skin.. Finally went to my Personal Physician, who identified it as ringworm fungus.

Cost 50.00 for the prescription cream. I bought another round of this cream over the phone with my Docter as I was running out, and it did not seem to be working well.

Long story short, the Doctor confirmed the ringworm infection was cured, but I was left was dry skin and excema! Don't confuse the symptoms!!!

Am now using an over the counter skin lubricant / softner to get rid of this excema. Remember to not confuse the symptoms! Exema is itchy and closely resembles ringworm's tiny start up patches! Hopes this helps someone out there! -Bob."

RINGWORM VS PITYRIASIS ROSEA

04/24/2009: Tatsiana from Columbus, GA writes: "Hi everybody - this is a great site with probably very helpful advices on how to get rid of ringworm. HOWEVER, it might not be a ringworm you're fighting! There is a very very similar skin condition called Pityriasis Rosea, and the initial outbreak on the skin looks EXACTLY like ringworm (most often it's on the chest or back). But it is not caused by fungus - that's why none of anti-fungi medication helps to clear it up. I got it about a month ago, figured it was a ringworm, started applying over the counter anti-fungul cream, did it for a week with absolutely no change in condition, during the second week I got little spots all over the body, got scared, tried to get an appointment with dermatologist, but was told that next available would be in a month or so (for a new patient), so I went to emergency room where doctor confirmed that it was a ringworm (without any tests though), and prescribed stronger cream and also antibiotic. I took antibiotics and started applying new cream which seemed to aggravate my rashes even more, they became bright read in color. That's when I found this web site, and I started trying every remedy, one after another - tea tree oil, ACV, white vinegar, nail polish, liquid bandaid, garlic - which badly burned my skin. I was thinking about clorox bleach already but skin was already burnt by garlic, so I was pretty desperate - I went to dermatologist's clinic and cried and begged they get me an appointment. I finally got to see the doctor, who took a few scrapings, looked under the microscope, and told me it was not a ringworm but PITYRIASIS ROSEA which is very often mistaken for ringworm. So look up that condition on the internet, and if you are fighting uphill battle with what you think is ringworm, you might find that you have totally different condition, which is not contageous because it's not caused by fungus, and the treatment is a steroid shot (optional) and steroid cream. I hope this information will help somebody."

This remedy does burn, but if you can withstand it for as long as possible, you will be rewarded."

1 QUESTION

[QUESTION]  02/02/2009: Robyn from Abingdon, MD writes: "21 Month Old With Scalp Ringworm: My 10 yr old son had dreadlocks for 6 yrs of his life. Once we cut his locks, we noticed that he had ringworm. So, for the past 4 yrs, we've been going back and forth trying to get rid of these things. They never have spread to any other part of his body...I've had good results with the hydrogen peroxide, apple cider vinegar shampoo and the tea trea oil, lavender oil, and sweet almond oil conditioner; however, my younger son (21 months) has recently had a few circular spots on his hair (short hair)...I began with the same thing I'd been doing for my son last night. Also, my daughter has scaly spots on her head every now and then, but if you go to scratch them, they come up very easity and the skin looks healthy underneath the scaliness. I don't know if thats related to what the boys are experiencing. She also has a few little bumps around her the front of her hairline. I use the acv on her head every week--she has very long thick hair. We're african american. But I was wondering if I should do something more. I don't know if it is now systemic. We don't use any other supplements, etc. Please help us!"

[YEA]  02/03/2009: Pam from Huntsville, AL replies: "Robyn, my four year old had ringworm on his arm and black walnut tincture from the health food store has cleared it up in less than two weeks. As far as your daughter, are you chemically straightening her hair or pressing it? I was a stylist for many years and saw a lot of what you are describing. What I would say is go to the beauty supply store and get a shampoo brush. When you shampoo her hair use the brush on her scalp with light pressure in a circular motion. This will stimulate scalp circulation. Also coconut oil applied to the scalp overnight and before any straightening will help clear the dry patches. If you find the coconut oil is too heavy, try sweet almond. if you are using petroleum jelly on her scalp and aroud her hair line this could be causing the little bumps. Hope this helps."

[YEA]  10/15/2008: Lance from National City, California writes: "Selenium deficiency and anemia appear to the biggest factor of candida or ringworm. silver mercury filling can deplete the body of selenium, zinc. this can lead to fungal infections. iron folic acid, b12 deficiency lead to anemia that can cause fungal infection i took 200mg selenium 3 times a day, zinc 50mg 2 times a day folic acid 3 times a day iron 1 a day b12 3 times a day. it doesn't take long for it to work. too much copper in the body can deplete selenium also causing fungus growth."
