#1 Home Remedies for Hair Thinning, Baldness, Male Pattern Baldness & Hair Loss

"Baldness involves the state of lacking hair where it often grows, especially on the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or 'male pattern baldness' that occurs in adult male humans and other species. The amount and patterns of baldness can vary greatly; it ranges from male and female pattern alopecia (androgenic alopecia, also called androgenetic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica), alopecia areata, which involves the loss of some of the hair from the head, and alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all head hair, to the most extreme form, alopecia universalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body." SIDE EFFECT

11/12/2006: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "This is a response to a question by one of the readers who emailed me as to why iodine is effective against baldness and hair loss. I think I can best answer this because I have some success from using a great many supplements where a hair loss or hair re growth have occurred.

Whether you are talking about iodine, selenium selenite, copper chloride, colloidal copper, tea tree oil, lavender oil, coal tar solution, eucalyptus oil, borax, boric acid, clove oil, camphor, tea tree oil, manganese sulfate, silicic acid, fulvic acid, and a great array of others that I have hair re growth and cured alopecia from 24 hours to 1 month period reported being cured.

The reason why I have employed a great array of cures is people seemed to be desperate to get the hair to regrow and local areas simply do not have the supplements so I simply had to modify the supplements. You might notice something too, how do I managed to know so many supplements? The answer is simple: all of those supplements and more then I am listing here, have anti fungicidal properties - even soy milk - being high in manganese!

Fungus and mycoplasma is probably found to cause hair loss by attacking hair follicles. I have seen person loosing hair after doing some attic work or working in musty high mold environments and within the next day, hair starts falling. Fungus-like organism causes arthritis, in particularly the ligaments, joints, and hard collagens which joins the bones in knees and spinal columns. As such, even my own mother was severely afflicted with arthritis within the next day after she tried to cut trees, bushes, plants of funguses. The cure of course was obvious, application of antifungal oils as mentioned above relieved her pain within a record time of: 5 minutes using just only my first formula, then after modifying it, it relieved in a record time of 2 minutes. The hair loss was seen, but manganese supplementation of that stopped dead in its track within 24 hours.

People do not take seriously how iodine deficiency is so widespread that right now, I am finding chemicals such as bromine, iodine, and the like to find out.

Most people today and throughout the civilized world at least are obese, hypothyroidism, low stomach acid, auto immunity of all kinds of conditions, have low energy levels, high in heavy metals, fungus and mycoplasma is found in so many people (at least 80%) of people who contact me that I don't even care to mention that most of my efforts has been focused on these matters.

One of the causes, could obviously be iodine supplementation, but this cure alone, lies the very heart of the problem.

People who took iodine were found to have other problems after a couple of days and had to stop due to various side effects that other websites don' t even mentioned. So I had to find a way to resolved this problem. The solution lies in the body's natural cycles. This I have found to be something I was looking for for a very long time. I have noticed, regardless of what I do, either EDTA to chelate heavy metals, or chinese parsley to rid of heavy metals, or even taking zinc supplements, they all had a pattern. The pattern is the body needs to repair, but at the same time it needs to relax. This period I calculated to equal approximately 8 days/2 = 4 days period, based on my observation. That means you supplement for 4 days and stopped cold turkey for 4 days. In practice I would vary the period between 3 -4 days. If certain minerals are not serious, or you are deficient, the one week on and one week off would be sufficient. In cases of a child with an autistic condition where heavy metal burden of mercury or aluminum is at risk, then one week on and one week off would do., or in some cases one week on and two week off.

The body obviously need a rest period to detox and get rid of the trash. Let us assuming you are taking iodine supplementation to cure your hair loss, but obviously you are sick from other conditions which clearly points to the fact that you are iodine deficient. Iodine deficiency is easy to see, auto immunity, low stomach acid, lack of energy level, adrenal exhaustion, fungus problems, arthritis (fungus caused, rheumatoid), high cadmium, high mercury, etc. In this case I would hardly recommend you to do an iodine painting continuously! I would just say, take 3 -4 days of iodine painting, on your foot of 3-4 inches in diameter, and do stop cold turkey for the next 3-4 days. On the other hand hair loss, then iodine painting in area of the head might help, which includes ringworm. Often I do not like to recommend the use of both iodine in general for obvious problems of discoloration and not sure whether people WHO DO contact me are in fact iodine deficient, until more information is at hand with the symptoms I have already mentioned.

Today Iodine deficiency is a serious problem which started only about 40 years ago when the food industry (possibly a conspiracy theory or perhaps simple foolishness) switched over the processing of bakery product from the use of iodine to bromine. The problem about bromine is that it causes the iodine to be displaced and this fact is quite well known academically. And as a result, despite adequate iodine in the U.S. people in U.S. displayed remarkable iodine deficiency. This is why when people who contact me I usually advised them to stop eating bread and bakery product. It is not about the flour, it is about the bromine that is added to them that displaces the iodine causing you to be deficient.

So in case you are wondering why iodine restored your hair, iodine kills the fungus and that helps the fungus from eating up the ends of the hair follicle. But the issue goes more than this, fungus EXISTS BECAUSE your body is already high in heavy metals. Without high heavy metals, they die. And one reason WHY your body was high in heavy metals in the first place could come from many things, one of which iodine deficiency reduces your body's ability to rid of heavy toxic metals such as cadmium, mercury, lead, etc. And when these heavy metals are high, they seem to make home by colonization in your various glands, such as thyroid gland, which may bring about hypothyroidism (that and lack of iodine), but in the adrenal, it may create adrenal exhaustion or gradual "moon face" look when you start reaching your 31st birthday, or in the pancreas, the generation of heavy metals causes lack of insulin, and if in the thymus, it creates immune suppression.

The catch-22 situation is once your body is high in heavy metals, it becomes a veritable paradise for fungus, mycoplasma and bacteria with fungal abilities. These need food near the heavy metals and the heavy metals protect themselves from hostile antibiotics. You see antibiotics get destroyed or oxidized in presence of heavy metals. In fact this is a protective shield for these bugs. And you wondered why antibiotics don't work!

Once the fungus starts invading the glands, they become inflamed, and when they do become inflamed, the doctors simplistically remove the gland! An easier and much kinder method would be to remove the heavy metals, kill the fungus, and stop inflammation using simple solutions I mentioned in the above (iodine, lavender, etc. depending on the conditions). And if you are indeed, iodine deficient take iodine painting 3 days on 4 days off about 3-4 inches in diameter on both feet. Of course back in the old days, they take it orally for people with goiter, like 250/mg per day (1819) and it was proven to work quite well. Today we don't do this, since we have somewhat like a "borderline iodine deficiency" where they thyroid don't show up in large sizes. Well this could be that heavy metals might be actually suppressing from showing their sizes so I guess we have to look at other symptoms as well."

2006: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "My mother has a hair loss, and she is 75 years old. I solved her problem by getting her to take some sodium ascorbate, which is an alkaline form of vitamin C. She takes about 1000 mg. of it. This is just to prevent hair loss.

The second issue is the clogged follicles, you can clear those calcium deposits in the hair follicles somewhat with apple cider vinegar or just vinegar. It smells bad, so you need to do it on your weekends or just make a small diluted ones before sleeping. Use this as a rinse. The suppleness of the scalp will return. If you have an itching fungus issue, this will cause a hair loss. So use a mixture of lavender/tea tree/aloe vera oil mix. An ideal mixture is 10% lavender, 10% tea tree and 80% aloe vera. This applying only once a week on scalp should deal with hair loss from fungus. Leave this overnight. The other thing about baldness, at least in men, I am not sure about woman is the issue of tiny, yet unidentified parasites. These causes patches of baldness also. Once they stay long enough, you will loose hair. You can restore this my rinsing with a 2% sodium perborate solution, or a less effective 5% borax solution. These are just ball park figures, as I never really weighed them or calculated them. However, when you apply these solution, leave them overnight.

In case hair loss are due to skin drying scalp and peeling, than you need an extra large dose of vitamin D, something like 10,000 I.U. up. Not taken everyday, maybe a week or two. Since vitamin D are hard to find, just take a 1-2 tablespoon of cod liver oil, and as an extra dose 1 tablespoon of linseed oil to give certain nutrients the hair needs, essential fatty acids."

12/11/2008: Cici from Winston Salem, NC replies: "I am interested in trying the Borax solution for hair loss but I am not so clear on the directions for the borax treatment. Do I shampoo my hair with regular shampoo first and then do the borax rinse? How do I mix the solution for the borax treatment? What all goes into the treatment and what should I do after I apply the treatment? Do I keep the treatment in overnight or rinse it out the same day? Do I cover my hair with a plastic cap while the treatment is on or leave it exposed to the air?"

12/13/2008: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "The problems about most shampoos sold in the market is that it promotes fungus growth and hence, causes further hair loss. The best way out is not to use the shampoo, but instead used the borax solution as a shampoo itself. Therefore the mix can be prepared at one half tablespoons per liter of warm water. Some may not dissolve, but wait for it to dissolve for about 30 minutes, while shaking or stirring the bottle, before use. Once the borax is washed, we can dry it, but not rinse. Then the next more we can rinse them. It should be noted that the cause of hair loss can also be due to fluoridation and chlorination of water, they tend to reduce the body's growth hormones as certain halogens like these weaken cellular metabolism, especially the glandular system. Therefore it's best to use dechlorinated water. The water can be prepared by adding a dechlorinator available from most aquarium shops as per instructions. I however prefer the use of sodium thiosulfate, which also dechlorinates. The other two common remedy I used is manganese supplements, such as manganese sulfate (preferably chewed or powdered) 25 mg a day for a couple of days, plus vitamin C sodium ascorbate 500-1000 mg. It should be noted that I have recently found a link between chlorine to hair loss from its effect in reduction of the body's growth hormones, fluoridation also has a similar effect, but the effects more on long term hair loss, then anything else. Chlorine has a short term somewhat more dramatic hair loss. Some supplements of boron (or borax) helps too, as is glutamine 4000 mg, niacinamide 500 mg, and glycine 1000 mg before sleep for example, as these tend to increase the body's hormones. I am sure I forgot some other things, but any amino acid that are nitric oxide promoters (as in glutamine) tends to raise growth hormone and reduce hair loss. This is why chemotherapy caused hair loss, it destroys the body's growth hormones and the hair is the first to go."

12/13/2008: Cici from Winston Salem, NC replies: "Thanx Ted! But just to make sure I understand correctly... I should mix the borax with dechlorinated warm water? Just in case I use chlorinated water though, if I use 25 mg of manganese, will the borax treatment still work fine, or do I need to dechlorinate the water and also take the manganese. I went to my local natural store today and purchased 50 mg Manganese tablet. Is this dosage too high and will it be less effective because it is tablet form instead of powder? The container the manganese comes in states that it is an Amino Acid Chelate. Is that ok? I did not mention this before, but I visited a dermatologist about my hair loss and was told that I have Cicatricial (Scarring) Alopecia. I am a diabetic and my dermatologist suspected that my increased sugar levels caused my immune system to weaken and allowed fungus to attack my follicles. In addition, I have developed a toenail infection that may be fungal related. I am not sure if I have an internal fungal take over that is triggering my hair loss and toenail issue. Will your hair loss and toenail remedy do the trick or should I try something else? Do you also have any suggestions for diabetes? I have type 2 diabetes and I'm suppose to take metformin but don't take it out of fear that it will cause other health issues."

12/14/2008: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "A dose between 25-50 mg is quite fine, I tend to mentioned that my dose tends to be on the low side, and hence 50 mg taken over a short time generally wont' cause problems, such as taking over a brief period, 5 days out of a week for a month. I do have some people with psychological problems who took manganese to improve his mood also a brief period not over two or three months at a much larger dose such as 100 mg. so I guess he was lacking in manganese.

A dechlorinated water is preferable when mixing. It's why some cases of hair loss is due to chlorine toxicity. As a proof, some people noticed that taking iodine supplements helped solved their hair loss problem. Obviously, the iodine displaced the excessive chlorine exposure from tap water and that resulted in a iodine deficiency. I would much prefer to try to avoid chlorinated (and fluoridated - about 70% of U.S.water is fluoridated - which is great for birth control, not learning disabilities it creates), and therefore it is easier to deal with toxicity by avoiding rather than getting rid of it. Some drugs does contain fluoride, so I would read the labels, they don't seem to help as they suppress pineal gland function, which is actually a master organ then the pituitary, since it's the pineal that orders the pituitary anyway. Obviously lack of sleep will suppress pineal gland functions in melatonin, so it helps a lot to have normal sleeping times, such as 8 or 9 hours.

An amino acid chelate is also find, but one has to know that they are actually made from amino acid with manganese compound however the problems why supplements in the market don't work as well is it is in tablet form, and the capsule form virtually glue covered the powder preventing absorption. It's best taken in powdered form, but if not possible, then it's grind to powder, or chewed on instead. Many tablets simply don't dissolve in the stomach and this can be shown by seeing whether it completely dissolves itself within 10 minutes or at the most 20 minutes. Some dissolving should be noted within the first 5 minutes, otherwise, it can't reach the body as quickly or not bioavailable due to limited solubility.

Also it's quite common for people to have fungus problem and fungus is often taken over leading to hair loss. Interestingly, manganese control blood sugar. However a person with some form of diabetes other supplements were also considered in my experience. I used chromium chloride, and most forms of chromium works well when I measure the blood sugar. High blood capillaries leads to capillary damage. However the dose to control blood sugar at least for chromium appear to be closer to 1000 - 1500 mcg.

Anyway, I prefer to buy in bulk chemicals for a very good reason: the Codex Alimentarius, which stops the sale of all supplements and natural remedies begin on December 31, 2009. So you won't get any more supplements after this date. I haven't followed up Codex Alimentarius, but I do know their estimates for worldwide death is about 3 billion. 2 is from preventable disease like this one. It really helps to go to youtube and educate yourself this codex alimentarius.

Vanadium is the other supplements that does reduce blood sugar, often in the form of sodium vanadate. The one simple one that does help blood sugar is niacinamide 250 mg and the easiest one of all is granulated lecithin, taken before every meal.

If blood sugar is not controlled, then hair loss will occur too, as it tends to lower immunity resulting in fungus takeover causing a hair loss. Other heavy metals may also cause hair loss that I am aware, such as too high arsenic. One of my favorite way in reducing blood sugar and weight loss is 4000 mg of taurine supplements, or roughly 1 teaspoon a day, dissolved in 1/2 or 3/4 glass of water. It has a noticeable effect on fat reduction too, but seems to control appetite, thus lowering the blood sugar from eating less. Blood sugar appears to be important one. A possible substitute for metformin is goat's rue. It works the same way in controlling blood sugar. My personal note is that it seems to reduce too much causing dizziness and other problems taking metformin and as a result I don't take it unless I have no other options - such as when Codex Alimentarius becomes a law. 10/08/2010: Laurie from Olney, Il, US replies: "Ted, I have read through many things that you say about heavy metal cleansing. I need to detox from heavy metals and mercury from having amalgon fillings removed the wrong way.. Out of all the many ways you talk about going about this, what would you say is the most effective... I have low thyroid for yrs, auto immune deficiency, arthritis and the list goes on and on... I can see now I need to get rid of the heavy metals first and then work on the ailments. What would you suggest? TC"

04/01/2011: Sue from Northern, Illinois replies: "Just wanted to share that I was losing lots of hair last year (autoimmune/meds?/menopause?) and was very concerned. I tried Ted's advice to use 1000 mg of sodium ascorbate, which is an alkaline form of vitamin C once a day.... And my hair began growing. It has been 6 months, and I now gladly fuss with all the new, uneven hair growth that's about an 1-1/2" long! Have been wanting to share my delighful news for awhile. Thanks Ted and thank you Earth Clinic!"

[SIDE EFFECTS]  12/14/2011: Sayno2gmo from Vancouver, Bc, Canada replies: "I tried the borax solution on my hair, and within 30 seconds it started to tingle a little, then it got really hot and felt like it was burning. Touching my head, I could notice it really was hot, some kind of instant reaction. I quickly rinsed it out, but it kept stinging a bit, and my head was really hot for a couple hours. I also got a headache, or maybe could be described as pressure in my head.

Has anyone else had a reaction like this? I used the 20 mule brand. About 1/2 tsp in 180ml spring water.

This scared me enough to not try it again. I was hoping the borax would cure my issues of dandruff that doesn't go away unless I use baking soda/acv rinse (I want to be able to use shampoo again! ), and rapid hair thinning that has recently showed up, only about 6 months ago. I believe it could be a fungus issue. Maybe it's from fukushima radiation, who knows, I'm on the west coast, and this started about 1 month after the incident.

I usually use a baking soda solution every couple showers, mainly if my head is itchy, flaky, this definitely helps. It tingles like it should, but never burns. I also usually use a ACV 1:5 parts ACV to water rinse with 10-15 drops tea tree oil and 2 drops rosemary oil.

I have haven't been able to use any shampoo for the last 2 years because it just gives me crazy dandruff. Doesn't matter what type of shampoo. I now use completely natural shampoo every once in a while, but still get lots of flakes after using it, although they are finer and less noticable then what I used to get with the chemical shampoos.

Any ideas as to why my head started to feel like it was about to light on fire? I'm scared to try it again as I don't want to lose anymore hair from these experiments!"

[YEA]  01/01/2012: Barbara from Toronto, Ontario, Canada replies: "Hi Sayno from Vancouver, BC, Your dandruff is an internal issue. Most everyone is lacking the health essential fatty acids in their diet. I cured my seborrheic dermatitis a skin disorder on my scalp with organic extra virgin coconut oil. I took 2 table spoons each day of the 29 oz jar and after I finished I noticed my scalp healed completely and it felt as smooth as a baby's bum. My scalp prior to using extra virgin coconut oil was very dry with scab like bumps that were also very painful at times and would also bleed a little after I scratched it. I only flaked a little and itched a little, but mostly it was sore and extremely dry. Before I decided to experiment with extra virgin coconut oil, I was consuming flaxseed supplements and oil for about 12 or so years.

It definitely helped, but this past summer for some reason the flaxseed oil was not doing a good job and so I decided to search for something else. I am soooo amazed at the results of extra virgin coconut oil and it's many many other medicinal healing properties. Just google health benefits of extra virgin coconut oil and you'll be amazed. Mother Nature always come through for us, we just have to look for it."

WARNINGS!

[WARNING!]  01/04/2008: Mary from Newark, New Jersey writes: "Dear Earth Clinic, I just wanted to let you know that I think on Ted's Posts it should say in bold at the beginning, or where it can't be missed to read the recipes carefully. I had a small bald spot on my head, found this website, and read some things Ted wrote. I read something about hydrogen peroxide and acv for scalp problems and hair loss. It did not say how much to use in the blurb I read. I thought I would try it. Well I just made a solution up and put it on my head. Left it on overnight. Well, Now I am loosing all my hair!!! So this was not a remedy in the little problem I had, instead, it is causing all my hair to fall out. I would like to spare future readers from this, so please put a warning, and make sure people read Ted's postings very carefully, and if they do not see a recipe, have them contact Ted before just making one up themselves. I know most people would be more careful, but there are us haphazard people out here you know. Thank you."

[WARNING!]  06/19/2010: Shemika from Hightstown, Nj replies: "I am grateful for Mary's story about topically applying acv to her head by mistake when she had a fungal infection and thus losing all her hair. I unthinkingly slapped some acv on my head before bed last night as I do from time to time, but this time I woke up disturbed and vaguely recalling her post so I got up and reread it as well as Teds instructions about the subject since I hadn't read them in a couple years. I realized I was making the same mistake Mary had because I likely also have a fungal infection due to my parasite infection. In Jan just when my hair was starting to see some real progress I absentmindedly put a little acv on it and continued to do so on occasion. Soon afterwards I was combing my hair and it started falling out in clumps. Not making the connection I continued over the past five months to put acv on my hair from time to time, wondering why it kept getting shorter and wouldn't grow any more. Sure enough, topical acv is likely part of the reason why my hair fell out and hasn't grown. I had credited it all to the meds I took about the same time which are known to cause hair loss, which is also likely part of the reason as well. Now I hope to get it right by using tea tree oil and the proper remedies instead. I will let that be a lesson I have to be more careful. Thanks for your site."
06/20/2010: Pat from Athens, Al, Usa replies: "What about possibly taking too much ACV orally causing hair to keep falling? Is it possible to take TOO MUCH orally??? And if so, would this cause an already case of hair coming out to continue or worsen??? I am not applying it topically, but am taking it orally 3 times a day. Is this possibly too much for me personally, as everyone might be different? I'm a big girl so don't know."
08/30/2010: Coregon from Medford, Or replies: "Note to Everyone about Hair Loss - The Apple Cider vinegar is NOT the culprit in Mary from NJ's hairloss. I've used ACV for years on my scalp in the shower (and left in) with no problems. (I have a sensitive scalp.. It only soothes it). If you read Mary from NJ's post again you will see she MIXED full strength ACV AND PEROXIDE and left it on her hair and scalp overnight. Clearly it was the PEROXIDE that burned her hair and irritated her scalp causing hair loss. No hairdresser would leave Peroxide in hair and on scalp for 24 hours, and neither should we!! Also, those 2 ingredients never should have been used full strength together and left on scalp. I didn't want there to be a ACV panic.. It's still good stuff and harmless to the scalp, at least it has always been harmless for me for years. (I only use 2 T ACV to one pint of water mixture.. Why waste it when this is sufficient to create an acid environment on scalp?) ACV is a known remedy to STIMULATE HAIR GROWTH, so why would it cause hair loss... In fact it DOESN'T! Certainly taking ACV internally would not cause hair loss either. Millions of people would be bald if that were the case :)

Hope this reassures people and they put ACV back on their list of great things to take! "
[YEA]  05/16/2011: Barbara from Union City, Tn replies: "I totally agree. I have been rinsing my hair with ACV for years and years and I have never noted any bad side effects. The ACV helps control my dandruff and it brings out the red highlights in my hair."
09/16/2011: Doddie from Lawrenceville, Georgia, Usa replies: "1) I used baking soda 1:5 ; 1 part baking soda to 5 parts water to wash my hair, left it on 10 minutes and rinsed.

2) I used borax 1/2 Tablespoon to a liter of water pour it in my hair and left it on overnite, I rinsed the following day, then sprayed my hair with 1 part ACV and 5 parts water. I have a sink top water filter and so it probably did have some chlorine and definitely fluoride it in and I am hoping the borax helped some.

The only side effect I had is when I left the baking soda sit on my scalp for 10 minutes. It did burn (sting) in the areas where my hair had thinned out (on top, at temples) and I take that as a good thing (like there was a little fungus or something there that I did not know about, that needed to be removed )

3) I am very pleased with the results and my hair is not falling out.

I think that when a person chemically treat their hair maybe with perms or permanent hair color and use peroxide or vinegar incorrectly you will have a negative reaction. Read everything carefully!"

10/31/2011: Bodulica from Barrie, Ontario, Canada replies: "For all of you losing hair: maybe is your thyroid. In that case you need iodine and selenium supplements. Be careful with selenium dosage. Some sources are saying that over 200 mcg is already poisonous, some say 400 mcg is still allowed..."

ACCUTANE RELATED

12/10/2011: Nickodactyl from Pullman, Wa Washington, United States writes: "I'd like to start by saying how amazing this website is and all of the great information that Ted and all of the members provide. A little background; I started Acctuane July of 2010 and got off it in December of 2011. I took anywhere from 40-80 mg a day. I saw a previous post on Acctuane and hair loss on this forum and I have been following it to a T for the last 4 months will little success. I am 18 years old and had the thickest head of hair before Accutane and I have no family history of baldness on either side of my family. I am 100% sure that I am losing hair due to Accutane. It isn't in the MPB pattern, it is mostly diffusing all over. I have taken so many supplements in attempt to counteract my hair loss, here are some:

Biotin (5mg)

N-acetyl Cysteine (1500mg)

Riboflavin 5- Phosphate (36.5mg)

B Complex (Activated/co-enzymated 3x daily)

Molybdenum Picolinate (1, 000mg)

Phytisone Adrenal Complex (3x daily)

AC Grace Vitamin E (1200 IU)

Glutathione (2x daily)

EPO (1000mg)

Thorne Mediclear (2x daily)

Prescript Assist soil based probiotic (2x daily)

Niacinamide (1, 000 mg)

L-Glutamine (10g)

Copper (2mg)

Zinc (30mg)

Manganese Sulfate (400mg)

Fish oil (2x a day)

L-Lysine (1000mg)

Vitamin C (5000mg)

MSM (3000mg)

Vitamin D (6000 IU)

As you can see, I have experimented with a lot of different supplements and it's quite overwhelming. The hair loss did not start until 2 months after my course was over. I feel like none of these are getting to the source of my problem which I believe to be cell divison. Accutane is a chemotherapy agent and acts by suppressing cell division and proliferation. I have done copious amounts of research over the last 8 months and feel like I am getting so close to the answer.

"Retinoic acid (active form of Accutane) induces differentiation and reduces proliferation of stem and progenitor cells. It works on acne by inducing similar events in basal sebocytes. These same actions also lead to 13-cis-retinoic's (Accutane's) side effects, and these are directed towards proliferating cells in the adult such as in the skin, gut and bone. "

"A wide ranging effect of retinoic acid is to inhibit proliferation in dividing cells, and this accounts for its frequent consideration as an anti-cancer agent."

"Deleting telomere elongation capacity throughout the body would also be life-threatening, because it would mean that our regular, proliferating cells (like those in the skin or the lining of the gut) would suddenly have iron limits on their ability to reproduce themselves and thus replenish tissue. From the moment that we denuded our cells of telomerase, a clock would be ticking. With each division the telomere would shorten by a notch from whatever it had been when we took telomerase out. We would be under the specter of a rather horrible death, as our stem cells went offline one by one under replicative senescence with each failure of a stem cell responsible for supplying key functions, the tissue would fail to be renewed and would slowly degenerate. "(De Grey, 297)

To sum all of this up, the evidence we currently have is that long term treatment with ATRA (all-trans retinoic acid), which is almost chemically identical to Accutane, causes "telomere shortening, growth arrest, and cell death."

Accutane induces cell apoptosis. It down-regulates the telomerase enzyme and shortens the telomere length so the cells can't divide as much anymore.

Numerous factors affect the number and activity of androgen receptors in dermal papilla cells. Retinoic acid (vitamin A derivative), if used for a long time, may reduce the number of androgen receptors by 30 - 40 percent. [29] Vitamin B6 reduces by 35-40% the extent of protein synthesis observed after androgen receptor activation. [30] A polypeptide with molecular weight of 60 kDa, analogous to an intracellular calcium-binding protein called calreticulin, prevents binding of the androgen-receptor complex to DNA and also results in the production of calreticulin.[31]

Drugs producing hair loss:
Drugs may affect hair follicles in anagen in two ways: by stopping mitosis in matrix cells (anagen effluvium) or by inducing transition of hair follicles from anagen to premature telogen (telogen effluvium). Anagen effluvium ensues a few days or weeks after drug administration, [46] and telogen effluvium only after two to four months. In both cases hair loss is reversible. Anagen effluvium can be produced by cytotoxic drugs (alkylating agents, alkaloids) and telogen by: heparin, vitamin A and its derivatives, interferons, angiotensin converting enzyme blockers, beta-blockers (propranolol, metoprolol), the antiepileptic trimethadione, levodopa, nicotinic acid, salts of gold, lithium, cimetidine, amphetamine, isoniazid and antiinflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, acetylsalicylic acid).

http://dermatology.cdlib.org/DOJvol4num1/original/jankovi.html

I feel as if there was a way to increase cell division that the hair loss could be reversed. It states in the last paragraph that "in both cases hair loss is reversible". I hope that this is the case and that I just have telegon effluvium and not permenant alopecia.

Without having a scientific background it is hard to connect the pieces and come up with a solution. Ted- if you can decipher all of this and make some connection between it, it would mean the world to me and many other Accutane sufferers.

Sorry for the long post, take care EC."

[YEA]  03/27/2008: Vinny from Atlanta, GA writes: "Hair/Scalp/Hair Loss Prevention:

*Lots of Aloe Vera (Gel preferred) [1]
*Tea Tree Oil, Lavender Oil, & Peppermint Oil [essential oils] (little) [5]
*Apple Cider Vinegar [2]
*Cod Liver Oil [3]
*Grape Seed Oil [3]

I really didn't measure, just estimated. On a scale of 1-5, 1 being the most & 5 being the least. Put the following in your hair after shampoo & do not rinse off; Then put water in your hair so you can makes sure it mixes well with your hair and spread it around. Leave on all day. Hair will smell a little like peppermint. You want to put as much as ACV in as you can but not to a point where your hair smells like vinegar. Peppermint should be the strongest smell out of all of them.

I put it in a big Aloe Vera bottle (the one you get at GNC)and mix it up. It's really good for the scalp as well as your hair!"

12/19/2011: Francisca from Zug, Zug, Switzerland replies: "Hi, after a bad perm which had to be repeated my hair, which is normally greasy got awfully dry and started falling big time. As I had my oldest daughters' wedding it was awful. After that we went on honeymoon with them and I felt like a moron with that bunch of horribly dry curls. My hair kept falling from May this year till a little while ago. By now it was looking in a bad condition and clearly less than I had before (I never had thick hair, so you can imagine what I looked like! ).

I tried a lot of stuff from VCO to anything else I could think of but nothing seemed to help. During a visit to a health food shop in France I found this herbal mix, which is called Herbamix. They say that it nourishes and regenerates the hair while stopping it from falling, delaying it getting grey and stopping dandruff. At first my scalp started itching so after a few days I stopped. As it was still falling weeks later I decided to start again. Funny enough it started falling almost immediately and it looks quite full although of course it hasn't grown much yet, it is just that it is in a better condition.

The mixture smells like urine but although I rub it on my scalp and hair in the evening (just a tiny little bit) the smell disappears in no time. As I swim twice a week now I wash my hair twice a week as well.

I can give you the name of the lab which is actually in India and you can maybe find out where to buy it: Vedic-Bio Labs Pvt, Ltd - Bangalore India - 560 076. There is a long list of herbs but all with scientific names so I don't really know what is in it! But.... It seems to work...... I hope it helps you too and maybe other people! I have the address of the importer in France in case anybody is interested!"

12/19/2011: Tina from Princeton, New Jersey, Usa replies: "Hi Francisca, Is Herbamix the only name of this product? I found Vedic bio labs on the web and it doesn't mention this product, at least not by this name. They do have herbal hair products but with different names. I was interested because I would like to get this product! You did say that it helped curb your hair from falling? Is it an oil? Or herbal powder? Thanks for clearing up my confusion!"
12/20/2011: Francisca from Zug, Zug, Switzerland replies: "Hi Tina, sorry but the only name that appears on the bottle is Herbamix. Under it, it is written Ayurvedic Hair Oil, above Natural Cosmetic. It is clearly an oil. Here is the e-mail address for the French importer which might be of help: keralanature@yahoo.fr. To be honest I never had a look at their site as I haven't had it for a long time. I find my hair is looking better and falling less. I will keep on using it as I only started it maybe a week ago. I massage a little bit on my scalp in the evening and then a little bit on the hair itself, especially the tips.

Here is a site I just found that might also be of interest: http://www.hairloss-research.org/UpdateTopicalCoconutOil5-08.html . I don't have the time to read it all now but it seems to contain useful information! Sad when one starts losing one's hair.... usually nothing dangerous but still very annoying! Good luck.....

Maybe you can contact the lab, give them the name they use in France or else contact the French e-mail address, they might be able to tell you what the international name is. If that doesn't work contact me again and I write to them in French, no problem! Good luck...."

12/23/2011: Tina from Princeton, New Jersey, Usa replies: "Hi Francisca! Thanks for getting back to me! I will contact the seller. Vedic-bio labs has two hair oils on their site, so I can also get it from there. Glad to know your hair is becoming healthier by using the oil.

I started a regime of diatomaceous earth recently and within 10 days began to see it's effect: my hair, which tends to get dry and therefore frizzy easily, now feels silky. The frizziness has almost disappeared. We are having a warm spell here and my hair would have usually been an untidy mess. Instead, it is calm, smooth, and shiny, even after spin class! I am also losing less hair when I shampoo, which is amazing. I also have more energy, no more of that late afternoon slump, and best of all, I am losing weight. That could also be because of me spending longer time exercising due to increased energy, lol. I have a heaping tablespoon in the morning and evening, blended in water. It's easy to swallow with no strong flavor or smell. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and everyone at Earth Clinic!"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  03/05/2010: Losinghair from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia writes: "I started reading this post about a month ago. I read about apple cider vinegar for hair loss.

I have been suffering hair loss for the last year and a half. I am in my mid thirties and always had long, thick hair.

I noticed over a year or so ago, in certain light, my scalp was obvious around the top of my head (by the way I'm female).

I believe, all hair loss is bad, but I think for women it's much worse, mentally. It's not quite as acceptable to shave your head!

I am already a major stresshead and this made me stress even more. I even stopped going out with friends.

I tried many natural hair loss products with no luck and eventually starting using minoxidil (which I ordered online because I was too embarrased to purchase from the chemist).

Minoxidil did grow back some hairs but after 5 months, I began suffering major irritation.
My head wouldn't stop itching and was flaky and developing sores.(I had never had any problems with itchy, dandruff head etc before.)

Anyway, getting to my point.
After reading here about ACV, I decided to give it a try. I have been, and would try anything to grow my hair back. (I haven't used minoxidol in over a month).

It has only been 2 and a half weeks and after drinking ACV every day, 3 times a day, I now have new hairs sprouting in my balding patches.

I am not paid to recommend this, but I am taking B____s ACV as I believe it's the purest (available from most health stores).

I recommend drinking ACV to anyone suffering hair loss! I also have been putting the rinse through my hair twice a week. It does smell a bit, but the difference is amazing, so much smoother.

I took some before photos tonight. I have a crappy camera, and they are slightly blurry, but I hope to be sending before/after pictures soon, with all my new hair!!!

DRINK ACV!"

Replies
03/07/2010: Cb from Blaricum, Netherlands replies: "Hi Victoria, If you use a lot of ACV it is possible that you need to supplement with Iodine as the ACV breaks down the iodine (I got funny sensations in my chest that freaked me out!). If you are a stressed person (like me) you also need to take lots of food with vitamin B or take a B-complex supplement. For the restless legs magnesium is very helpfull. Kelp can be a good supplement for you as it contains iodine and magnesium a.o. Another very good supplement for hairloss is MSM (you can read about it on this site) it worked wonders for me as I had the same problem with my hair. Regards, CB"
06/11/2010: Truda from Port Louis, Mauritius replies: "hi, I'm 33yrs old and female, i have suffered from hair loss since i was 17 yrs old. Before i had long and thick hair. In those days all i had to do was pull at a my hair and it would fall, it was so loose at the roots. With time it just kept falling despite all treatments. I tried many shampoo's, pills and last resort was minoxidil solution. At first my hair stopped falling but the texture of my hair was very dry and terrible to manage.

It's an exaggeration if i say that i don't have hair at all but the crown is getting more and more visible and it's embarrassing when i go out to fancy places. I am trying the 2 tablespoons ACV with ¼ tablespoons baking soda 2 times a day the final hair rinse with diluted ACV twice a week it looks more manageable and hair falls but i am not expecting a miracle right now. I just wanted to add to this person's testimonial as i feel I'm in the same position only thing that worries me is i don't know if i have fungus and whether i need iodine supplements.

thank you to all for your honesty and it really warms the heart to know that people care."
06/12/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "I washed my hair with bicarbonate of soda yesterday and rinsed with ACV. My hair seems ok, fuller, not really shinier but something I would like to ask the ladies here: please mention whether your hair is dyed when you advise some hair treatment because natural hair often reacts in a completely different way. I will do it a few more times and see the results."
06/17/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "I would say more.... make sure you always eat enough. Work shouldn't come before your wellbeing!

I have tried to take ACV at least once a day in a glass of water but I have problems, my tongue goes all white even if I only take 1 teaspoon, no matter the time of the day. After getting better tried a few drops of lemon juice in a glass of water in the morning, as I read that this gives you a lot of energy but the same thing happens. Does anyone have an explanation? It also seems to slow my digestion even more. I have no trouble whatsoever with either if mixed with food or with lemon juice in juices.

I hate having my coated tongue again as I got rid of it when I changed to non fluoride toothpaste. But I know that it will disappear in a few days!"
06/17/2010: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Francisca,

The coating on the tongue builds quickly when the toxins are being released from your body. If I have an especially powerful green smoothie (such as dandelion greens, ginger, garlic) within a half hour my tongue is thick with a coat. It's actually a good sign that it happens after the ACV and the lemon juice as it shows the power of those for detoxing the body. What I do is use a tongue scraper which you can purchase at a health food store. Some Asian stores also carry them because they understand these types of principles. It is annoying when I'm not going home so I now carry one in my purse. This also occurs when people are detoxing through their diet. As far as slowing your digestion, not clear on what it is doing that. Both the ACV and the lemon?

Hope this helps. Take care, Lisa"

06/17/2010: Truda from Port Louis, Mauritius replies: "I wish to add that it's been over 2 weeks since i started the ACV orally and last rinse as advised by one of the friends above. My hair is more manageable as i said before and looks nicer but the hair still falls(the amount of hair loss varies as when i just wash my hair i lose more hair than normal days) i don't know whether it's due to dying my hair as i have graying hair so i must dye constantly. I would like some advise on what type of dye to use safe for fragile hair if anyone can help me.

By the way, i made the mistake of drinking ACV on an empty stomach and not eating all day as i had so much work two days ago. Conclusion: i ended up so sick i started throwing up and having loose stools all through that night. Make sure all of you eat after consuming ACV."
06/18/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Thanks again Lisa. I will try to clean the tongue. I used to do it when I had a coated tongue all the time because of using toothpaste with flouride. When I changed the toothpaste it went away almost immediately. For the time being I am still drinking my water with a few drops of lemon juice and I will see how it goes. Somehow I have the idea that it is better already..... thanks for the advice otherwise I would have stopped!"
06/18/2010: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Francisca, I'm glad to hear that info helped you. I understand what you mean about the tongue coat making eating very distasteful. It happens to me as well which is why I said I carry a tongue scraper in my purse because it makes me lose my appetite too. If I'm coming home to eat I just immediately go into the bathroom and take care of it because it feels so gross. Then I'm fine and am ready to eat. You may find the same for yourself.

As for it disappearing after a time from the body detoxing, well, that's another story. I would love to say that our body is finally and completely detoxed but today, that will never be the case as we live in a toxic world now. Hence, why it is important to continually work at helping our body to detox, aiding it with a cleaner diet, using ACV, baking soda, juicing, finding alkaline water to drink, etc. That is why Bill says he has his "arsenal" to continually help his body. I have my personal favorites as well!

As for the ACV causing you to lose weight but not in salad, then perhaps stick with that protocol. I too lost a lot of weight when I changed my diet to mostly raw and juicing and now I am finding my balance because I don't want to lose anymore weight either. Wishing you the best, Lisa"
06/18/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Thanks Lisa, I hadn't thought of that.... I just thought that my stomach couldn't take it and stopped. As far as digestion goes maybe I just don't feel like eating because of the coated tongue..... it is as if I never have any hunger when this happens. And yes, it happens with both, ACV and lemon juice.

I will go on trying and see if in a little while it disappears. If it is my body which is detoxifying it should, shouldn't it? The ACV makes me lose quite a bit of weight even if I only take 1 tspoon a day in a glass of water and I can't afford to lose anymore weight. If I use it in salads nothing seems to happen, only on its own. Thanks!"
06/22/2010: Norman Leslie from Consolacion, Metro Cebu, Philippines replies: "I have used ACV for my plugged ear together with hydrogen peroxide and seems to help.

Also a lady mentioned going grey, well try taking tablespoon black strap molasses 3 or 4 times daily with hot water & milk is what I do it cured my nose bleed years ago and now it is curing my edema in my feet ankles & leg and my hair. I noticed more blond as it used to be and I read people with gray hair getting black hair again. I also use Alovera gel in my hair."

07/23/2010: Reina from New York, NY replies: "Hi Truda:

In a 2006 post, Ted wrote: "The second issue is the clogged follicles, you can clear those calcium deposits in the hair follicles somewhat with apple cider vinegar or just vinegar. Leave this overnight."

Maybe that is causing the hair loss. Good Luck!"

[QUESTION]  07/30/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Has anyone ever heard of the connection between Molasses and cancer? Now you got me worried.... I take a tspoon every day..."
[YEA]  07/30/2010: Truda from P.louis, Mauritius replies: "To Reina and anyone else on this website, Thanks for trying to help me, I don't feel as desperate as I was a month or two ago. I have been documentating myself a lot on remedies found on this site. In fact, acv is an astringent(cleanser)it cleans the scalp, lemon is also a good astringent which helps cleaning the scalp and helps with greasy hair. My hair is in fact greasy, I had a habit of touching my head this also helps in making hair greasy as it releases sebum. I have stopped taking acv orally and wash my hair once in a while with acv now. I tried the cayenne pepper and vodka as well and I didn't feel any different. But something has finally stopped my hair from falling completely and that's aloe vera, I went to a aryuvedic shop and bought aloe vera pills. It in fact, helps all skin problems and stops hair from falling. I did not find borax to wash my hair but I found a neem and lemon soap as well as its shampoo. The blackstrap molasses mentioned by some kind friends is not recommended as it helps in producing cancer, anyone using this often should stop. I write off here for now."
07/30/2010: Tina from Utrecht, Netherlands replies: "To CB from Blaricum, Is it true that Apple Cider Vinegar lowers your iodine level? I have been using it for 5 weeks now during a detox and have been getting a mega heart rate with my heart skipping beats. I went to the doctor this morning and he said my heart is perfect, he wants me checked for thyroid problems ( too quick working). But if I read your story, it could just be that I am taking too much Apple Cider Vinegar or am now lacking iodine. Groet, Tina"
08/02/2010: Truda from Port Louis, Mauritius replies: "If anyone wants to know more about the BSM, on the earthclinic itself you will find many testimonials of people who have used this. It has its benefits and has helped lots of people. Sorry for alarming anyone. This part comes from one of the reviews that I read:

"Iron acts as a cancer-promoting agent by two separate yet synergistic mechanisms: 1) by producing "free radicals, " and 2) by feeding cancer cells. Iron increases the production of free radicals, and-in fact-the production of free radicals is largely proportionate to the level of iron. 4 This means that the more iron there is in the body, the more free radicals will be produced and thus the greater the risk of disease)"

08/03/2010: Msg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "Hm, I wonder about that. I actually take Blackstrap Molasses to up my low iron levels and it has worked very well (iron pills never worked for me)."

After the first month i had a burning sensation on the back of my head by neck like I was suburn. I read in a post that Ted said its because of the acid buildup being broken down and released through your blood. Maybe I had acid buildup in my hair folicles. I dont know. But I wasn't even taking it for my hair. I took it for insomnia and blood sugar which worked great. I hope it works for others as well as it did for me. Good luck."
07/20/2008: Kristie from Talladega, Alabama replies: "In response to Anna from Ca postings...

Anna, I have had thinning hair since my late 20s, but have not had a hysterectomy but did have a procedure to remove precancerous cells from my cervix. I think this might have thrown me into menopause early. I have also had a lot of stress about the time it started for other reasons. I was wondering if you could email me some before and after pictures of you. I was wanting to compare you thinning problem to mine, since I am not sure what caused mine (krisseabolt@yahoo.com). My brother and cousin went prematurely bald, so mine could possibly be hereditary. I starting using the vinegar today and felt the burning within an hour after taking it. Is the juice/water necessary for the ACV alone? I haven't gotten the baking soda because I read on another site that ACV, red dates and honey are good. I will get baking soda this week and start using it as well. My problem has been ongoing for over 5 years. I really hope this helps.

P.S. I will be happy to send a picture of me, but it will be a little old, as I didn't take the time to find another cure for the thinning because it got so bad so quick that I resorted to wearing a hair system. If this works I will have to figure out what to do while the hair on the top of my head grows. I pray it does! Literally....

Any suggestions from anyone is great. There are so many scams out there that I am even skeptical of this, but it is cheap, so won't hurt to try it...."
04/19/2009: May from Milwaukee, WI replies: "Recently I've noticed that my hair just gotten thinner then how it used to be. I'm not sure what the cause of this could be, but I am desperate to find a cure. I have not tried anything for my hairloss, yet, a friend of my boyfriend's did mention about using tomatoes as a shampoo to put in your hair. That won't make your hair thicker or grow more, but it will only make your hair grow long. Please do tell me more. Thanx."

[YEA]  01/20/2011: Joyce from Lansdowne, Pa replies: "I have been taking ACV with water at least once a day for acid reflux. It has helped with this problem. I have been losing my hair for some time now. My hair is brittle and breaks quite easily. I have gone from shoulder length hair to about 1/2-inch of hair on my head with bald patches. Thankfully, there are some nice wigs available. I have been taking all the supplements necessary to stop my hair from breaking and falling out. My Dermatologist could not tell me what was causing my hair to break. He took scalp samples, consulted with another dr but neither of them could help. The topical steriods they gave me made it worse.

I used the ACV rinse but did not see any improvement. Two mornings ago I decided to add some lavender oil and rosemary oil to the ACV and kept in on my head for a little more than an hour. I then shampooed my hair. I towell dried my hair and put my regular moisturizer along with a little castor oil. When I got home in the evening instead of feeling dry brittle hair, my hair was moist and soft. I could not believe it!!!!!! I comb my hair and there was no hair in the comb!!!!!! I am going to continue with the regimen and will update."

01/21/2011: Ratgirldjh from Austin, Tx replies: "I've found drinking more water also helps this. And as someone else posted - not washing your hair so often and using something gentle (non SLS) such as just conditioner or a soap bar with a diluted ACV rinse afterwards. What helped me most was waiting until my hair was actually dirty before washing - usually a week at least - but my hair is long. I also found that using VCO on dry hair and leaving overnight and then washing it with an egg first to remove most of the oil and then using my soap bar and a vinegar rinse helped the most.

Is it in the water that we drink or shower. The right side of my scalp got more affected. Cutting the story short, i have started taking ACV for about a month now, 2 tablespoons in a glass of water taken twice a day. I also use diluted ACV as a final rinse when i wash my hair every weekend. I can say this - my hair has started looking much healthier. I cannot say if it has reduced my hair loss, i hope it does. That day only less hair fell when I washed and combed afterwards. Since then, I use ACV as my last rinse. It's truly working wonders. Hats off to these wonders of nature."

I also supplement with biotin and MSM. My hair quit falling out almost immediately. By the way, you don't need to scrub your scalp with fingernails to get your hair and scalp clean. Massage gently with your fingertips and don't pile your hair up on top of your scalp to scrub. That causes more tangle that will break your hair off when you try to comb it out. Be gentle and comb, don't brush wet hair."

When I found a dye which worked in 10 minutes I was quite happy. Why wait for 30 minutes with that stuff in your head? But after using it I started to lose hair again. I think that this happened because this stuff is maybe stronger than the 30 minute one so I will never use it again. Anyway, next time I will try one from the health shop."

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES

YEA

[YEA]  07/11/2008: Jarad from Auckland, New Zealand writes: "Bach Flowers For Hair Growth.

First off, thank you for this fantastic site. It has really helped me.

I will give you a run down of my situation as I feel it's all-relevant in some way or another.

For many years, about 17 years (starting when I was 21) I have been worried about my hair, which has always been quite fine. Because I thought it was thinning I read all I could and searched out remedies etc. As I didn't want to admit it to anyone I felt isolated. I really worked myself into a state by constantly checking in the mirror at home and where ever I went. The problem with this is that all mirrors have different lighting and some lighting makes hair look thinner etc. It was like I wanted confirmation and then some way of tracking the process so I could see if what I was trying as a remedy was working. I tried topical herbal solutions. One called Nioxin (the shampoo basically makes your hair thicker). This made me feel better but it didn't really help my state, which was basically, secretly underneath it all,...anxiety. But I kept spending $ on these things and vitamins. I had developed a kind of dread. I had real insecurity.

I visited a few natural doctors, Chinese, Ayurvedic etc. about this and general things. I discovered I had quite low blood pressure.
I started using Tumric, fennel, Cumin, Basil, Cardimon, Coriander and Cinimon.

I went to a herbalist who muscle tested me and reckoned that my thinning hair was caused by dairy products and hormonal reasons. I could cut out the dairy, but the hormonal thing, I had no idea why that was. But I got herbs off her to deal with this. And I felt better.
She also said my tests told her that dipping my head bellow my knees regularly for 60 seconds would help (I thought at the time this was silly. But now I think it's a very good idea).

I was always looking at other men to see if they where balding as a way of either feeling better that I had more hair than them or thinking "Oh no that's how I will be".

I had a very uncomfortable feeling. I would wake up feeling gutted. So did a lot of meditation to deal with these awful feelings. But I was addicted to looking and checking. My scalp felt tight so I randomly massaged it.

I had a hair analysis test about 3 years ago and went on a homeopathic detox because of high lead. It also showed Amalgam. After this detox I took Chlorella tablets for months. By this time I had decided that my thinning hair was because of stress and these heavy metals. This test also said I had a Thyroid issue, being under active (Even though I'm quite skinny).

I kept using the Nioxin topical treatment (which really just makes hair look thicker I think).

Over the years, at times I perceived that my hair was getting thicker, but I think it was just as it was at the time just different lighting and hair cuts. And after this sense of wow its growing thicker now, I would then have panic attacks when I saw in certain lights that it was indeed getting worse.

Its all about the tracking and gauging what's happening and then the reaction + or -. A real roller coaster of emotions. My state was not about acceptance. It was a battle.

What I felt all along, deep down, was that "This is not how things are meant to be" This is why I was searching for a remedy. Not just because I was vain. Maybe this is because there WAS a solution to my hair thinning, I didn't feel acceptance of my condition.

About a year and a half ago I started to seriously search the inter net for cures. I found lots of herbal remedies and was about to send off for some but thought I would just go the local health food shop and get the free herbalist to make me up a combo of the herbs these products contained, Saw Palmetto etc, for DHT blocking etc.

I did this for 6 months or so. I didn't perceive much difference.

I went to my Anthrosophic doctor about 10 months ago who suggested I take Iscador (Mistletoe homeopathic by Weleda) by injection, which I did myself. This he said would boost my immunity and cause my hair to grow thicker. I was taking it 3 times a week. You must have this prescribed to get it and use under supervision.

I was taking Saw Palmetto, Thyro Vital Complex (with L-Tyrosine, Withania, Kelp, vitamin + minerals) Life Stream's "Skin" (Aloe Vera, Horsetail, Gotu Kola, Grape Seed) Vit B complex, Fish Oil. MRI brand "Multi Complete" and Cell Salts (all 12 combo). Also I have always and still have a good, natural, hole food diet with small amounts of meat and fish.

At this time I found the Earth Clinic web site. I started the suggestions; rubbing my fingernails together. I also took a deep breath, dipped my head bellow my knees and while holding the breath, gently pushed my fingers from my neck down my side burns and down my forehead and held at my hairline for a few moments, Then coming back up and breathing out. I did this morning and night.

I also started using a Plumb Blossom Hammer, which is a small acupressure tapping hammer with little needles. I was tapping my scalp all over till it was all red twice a day.

I perceived that my hair was in fact getting thicker by this regime.

Shortly after this I became very emotional and upset about other things. I thought that these issues where caused by the Iscador, or the scalp tapping, so I stopped and my regime was crushed. I soon felt that my hair was once again thinning. I also felt the Saw Palmetto wasn't really doing anything. On top of these stuck feelings I realised I had an odd ringing in my left ear that sounded like mores code. I was beside myself! I felt like my body was malfunctioning, and I was looking and checking everything trying to track these new rapidly appearing symptoms. I called all kinds of practitioners to find some clues to it. I was physically exhausted through lack of sleep from the stress.

I got great relief from a Japanese acupressure technique called Shin Jin Jitsu. This really helped my emotional turmoil, amazing.

I went to a Homeopath who gave me a homeopathic called Wiesbaden (aqua 5c, use under supervision of Homeopath). This he said would grow my hair. He also said that the Plumb Blossom Hammer does work but that I didn't need it, just his remedy. I took it for about a month 3 x a day. Not sure if it worked.

I went back to the Anthrosophic doctor. My Thyroid was normal now, and so too was my blood pressure (which had been low)

My scalp started to smell this I think was from using the Plumb Blossom Hammer. I got rid of the smell by applying coconut oil over night a few times as suggested on Earth Clinic. It worked.

I got my last Amalgam filling removed and went back to the Earth Clinic web site and found the Oil Pulling suggestion. I did this and my week feeling, sensitive gums felt better. I was also inspired by the promised heavy metal removal. So I did it every morning (and have been doing so for 6 months). I do sesame mostly. Coconut oil works for my sensitive gums, just twice. Weleda Herbal Toothpaste (silica based).

I did the oil pulling while fingernail rubbing for 10 minutes each morning. Then two glasses of water one with cider vinegar. Deep breathing and head below the knees for a few moment regularly over the day. I also started the hair brushing suggestion on this site, which I did twice a day.

So now back to my hair worries. I felt this terrible knot in my stomach, and at times in my heart. Again at this time I went to a place I had gone to 4 years ago that helped me sort out my health. They use a machine that reads the meridians from my fingers and toes. This gives a picture of how the organs are functioning inside the body. The practitioner is very skilled at the choosing homeopathic treatments and diet based on the readings.

(They can test substances on the body also. Most of the vitamins tested they on me where fine but the COATINGS on the tablets and capsules where BAD (So I recommend washing the paint like gunk of your tablets and empty the capsules out). They said that as the tablet goes through your body it is accompanied by this coating and your body will reject both as waste not nutrient.)

They ultimately said my body was not absorbing nutrients because of my emotional imbalance. They prescribed me a Bach Flower combination. This really helped. I went back and they gave me a new combo to deal with other emotional issues, my absorption was getting better with my feelings. The following month they said my absorption of nutrients was even better. I told them that the yucky feelings where pretty much gone, I was feeling like myself again. They then prescribed another homeopathic and a new combo of Bach Flower remedies, but this time for my SCALP. Some how they ascertained that my scalp was stressed and this was why my hair was thinning. I was to put 5 drops in an eggcup half filled with good water and then simply apply it to the whole scalp twice a day.

The combination of Bach Flowers would be dependent on your personal stress reasons.

Within two weeks I had noticed a change in my scalp. Deep down I felt that this was the real solution! I ran out of Nioxin shampoo and stopped it. It tested no good for me anyway. I also stopped the Plumb Blossom Hammering.

The next visit and they said my absorption of nutrients was excellent now and I was feeling so much better.

Into the second month and my hair is definitely getting thicker.

My dad is going bald and his dad is bald. So I had figured maybe its just hereditary. But my dad didn't start thinning till he was in his late 40s. But I also know that this was probably his most stress full work heavy time of his life being self-employed. So I feel that it is actually stress in my family that is the issue. I have been self- employed for 17 years and quite a stress sensitive person. This is held in my scalp but the Bach Flowers relax it. I will see what happens now that this cycle has been interrupted with continued use.

So if it is stress for you, try Bach Flowers. It's also no good having uncomfortable feelings full stop. These must be relieved for good health and proper nutrient absorption.

I am not sure exactly if it's just the Bach Flowers applied to the scalp or if it's a combo of the oil pulling, rubbing nails together, hair-brushing technique etc. Or maybe the removal of my amalgam fillings.

I figure that doing it all can't hurt. But listen to yourself above all.

THANK YOU AGAIN EARTH CLINIC!!! (I tell every one about you. One guy said the Oil Pulling fixed his gum infection)"

11/22/2008: Julie from Sydney, Australia replies: "Was it baking powder or baking soda you used?"

EC: Good question! Usually people refer to aluminum-free baking soda.

Info from The Cook's Thesaurus website: http://www.foodsubs.com/Leaven.html

"baking powder

Baking powder is a mixture of one or more acidic salts and baking soda, an alkali. These two compounds react when they get wet and release carbon dioxide gas bubbles. These, in turn, cause baked goods to rise. Baking powder is perishable. To test a batch, add 1 teaspoon to ½ cup hot water. If it doesn't bubble, throw it out. Look for baking powder among the baking supplies in most supermarkets.

baking soda = bicarbonate of soda = sodium bicarbonate = bicarb = bread soda

Equivalents: One tablespoon of baking soda = 1/4 oz = 7 grams Notes: Baking soda is alkaline, and when mixed with acidic ingredients, it reacts and releases bubbles of carbon dioxide. These bubbles, when trapped inside batter, help baked goods rise. Baking powder contains baking soda, along with acidic salts that react with the soda when they get wet or heated. Recipes that call for both baking powder and baking soda are probably using the baking soda to offset extra acidity in the batter (from ingredients like buttermilk or molasses) and to weaken the proteins in the flour. Omitting the baking soda from these recipes may alter the color or flavor of whatever you're baking, and make it less tender.

Unfortunately, I believe the benefits of fighting Male Pattern Baldness with baking soda and ACV may have been exaggerated. I've been using ACV & baking soda since Aug. 9, 2009 (today is Aug. 22 2010) and the difference in my hair regrowth is only slight at best. The shape of my head is still quite visible. I've found that drinking horsetail tea on a regular basis and adding it to the ACV rinse helped with the MPB even more so but again only slightly. However, until something better comes along I'm going to continue using baking soda & ACV because it's a wonderful treatment for dandruff. Also, every shampoo & conditioner I've investigated contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and/or Sodium Laureth Sulfate. These two chemicals are what are used to make soap nice and lathery but they also destroy hair follicles. I must also add that baking soda & ACV restored my hair color. It didn't get rid of the gray hairs but restored the youthful shine & got rid of the dullness that comes with age. As I continue the baking soda & ACV treatment, if anything should favorably change, I will make sure to write."

[YEA]  08/28/2009: Leelannee from Sussex, Nj writes: "YEA for biotin (hair loss)
YEA for iodine & borax (dandruff)

After the birth of my son 15 years ago, I had more hair loss every time I brushed or washed my hair than I had ever had before. I always had long, almost waist-length, thick hair. After the birth, I became so distressed over the thinning, dryness, & split ends that I cut my hair to chin-length. I kept trying to grow it long but every few years "chopped" it again due to split ends. My hair is medium-coarse and never seemed thin to people who cut my hair but I could tell the difference.

About a year ago I started taking biotin. I take 5mg per day, and I get a bottle of 300 capsules (10 months' supply) for $12, so this is a very affordable, no fuss remedy! It took a month or two to notice a real difference, but my hair loss became minimal. My hair is now so thick, and has grown past my shoulder blades for the first time in 15 years! Also, there are very few split ends--even though this doesn't make much sense, as only the new growth would be affected by the biotin, but it's true (a few months ago I bought some very sharp scissors and trimmed my split ends, but they haven't come back). And my hair is growing a little faster; it used to grow no more than 1/2 inch per month (I color my hair 3-4 times per year, and occasionally measure) and now it is growing almost 1 inch per month.

Another hair problem I had for about 20 years was dandruff. This started when I was 16. I tried many, many supplements, diet changes and topical remedies over the years with no results (except for a liquid zinc treatment for excema--this helped but didn't cure). I eventually tried a dandruff shampoo, which would give me relief for no more than 24 hours. I really didn't want to do this, but if I didn't I would actually get scabs in addition to incessant itching & painful inflammation.

A few weeks ago I bought a "liquid kelp" iodine supplement, took a dropperful twice a day in water and within 48 HOURS I had ZERO FLAKES! This is after 20 years of discomfort, self-consciousness, and not being able to wear black or use nicer shampoos! I recently found another supplement that has 150mcg iodine per drop, and I take 2-3 drops per day.

About 2-3 weeks after starting the iodine, I had a VERY slight return of the dandruff. But now I am not using dandruff shampoo at all. I shampoo, douse my scalp with a borax solution (1-2 tablespoons in 2 cups of water), let that sit for a couple of minutes, then condition. My scalp is super clean, I can go several days without shampooing (when I had the dandruff I had to shampoo every other day), and my hair seems softer & less frizzy."

About a week ago I had a massive outbreak of flakes on the top of my head near my hairline. Having read that milk of magnesia is great for skin & itching, I impulsively doused that area, left it on for about 1/2 an hour, then rinsed it out--without using shampoo or conditioner, to make sure nothing else affected my "experiment". My hair felt like it was full of glue and baby powder (washed out fine the next day), but it seems that Milk of Magnesia really helps the dead skin slough off!!! I had to brush out lots of flakes but since then my scalp has been pretty clear, and much less itchy.

I also patted some Milk of Magnesia on my face and let it dry. My skin was SO soft afterwards, for days, and a couple of rough rashy patches are cleared up!"
09/10/2009: Rob from Manhattan, New York replies: "re: your dandruff, There may be triggers in your diet that could be causing the dandruff. For me coffee is a culprit. Fairly consistent in that a few days after a cup I will have flaking. I like to make up a tea of Rooibos & Peppermint & sometimes Nettles (though nettles are a diuretic). It seems to have a balancing, & hydrating effect & eliminates the dandruff.

this from Wiki...

Rooibos is purported to assist with nervous tension, allergies and digestive problems.[6] Traditional medicinal uses of rooibos in South Africa include alleviating infantile colic, allergies, asthma and dermatological problems.[7][8]"

Also, does anyone know if biotin grows hair elswhere as one person told me it will grow facial hair. thanks"
04/14/2010: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario replies: "I noticed on the bottle of biotin that I am taking is 300 mcg's what exactly is this.

Did anyone ever have side effects from Biotin.I have taken it for a month now and nothing. Thank you"
04/14/2010: J0hnn from Toronto, Ontario Canada replies: "This reply to Laurie from Sudbury...

I used a combination of Biotine, Vegitil Silica, and Chelated Zinc to stop hair loss and regrow natural coloured hair on my head last fall.

A couple of points...
1...the Biotine I used was capsules of 5,000 mcg each. Possibly your 300 mcg caps are not enough for this purpose. Has the hair loss cause been removed?

2...the hair on the crown of your head grows an average of 1/2 inch per month, so if the rest of your nutrition is adequate, you should start seeing some fuzz on the previously bald areas at the 4 to 6 week point.

Hopefully this answers some of your questions."
07/21/2010: Labrat from Burlington, Nc, Usa replies: "My husband started using biotin, silica and zinc for hair loss. But after reading about zinc toxicity, I am concerned about the doses in the protocol I got from JOhnn in Toronto's post. 100mgs 3x/day for first 3 wks. Did I interpret that right? and is chelated zinc, zinc gluconate?"
07/23/2010: Johnn from Toronto, Ont, Canada replies: "To Labrat from Burlington, Nc, Usa. . . Yes, that is the dosage I used. However, if you are concerned with the zinc, reduce the zinc amount only. I have never seen or experienced any problems with this dosage of chelated (organic)zinc and have taken zinc supplements for decades. It is almost always below optimal in older men(prostate issues). I think you can still get the hair results without as much zinc as the zinc in this protocol is for getting the hair to grow in with your natural hair color. Hopefully this answers your questions and you see the same success I had. Regards, Johnn"
07/23/2010: Jay from Toronto, Ont, Canada replies: "To Labrat from Burlington, Nc, Usa. If you are using regular zinc glutonate, only 15 percent of it is absorbed which means only 15 mg of the 100 mg ingested is actually absorbed by your body. Therefore 3x100 mg only nets out at 45 mg actual that your body can use per day. . Again, as I said in my other post, the extra zinc is mostly for the hair color and can probably be reduced without affecting hair growth. Regards, Johnn"

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  05/11/2009: Guest_Mother from Toronto, Ontario writes: "Load Many thanks to all who are contributing to this great site. I have been using 1 Tbsp of BSM in milk first thing in the morning for past two months,Vitamin b complex for 2-3 weeks and 1 tbsp ACV 2-3 times a week in glass of warm water for hair loss and gray hair problem. I am 29 yrs old breastfeeding mother of a toddler.

The remedy seems to work for hair loss as i have much better hair now. Gray hair problem is still there, no effect. But my daughter's front teeth have developed brown streaks. Can this be because of the treatment i am using. I do not want to stop as it is working for my hair loss. Please advise."

06/01/2009: Caitlin from Austin, TX replies: "Yes! Those brown streaks are more than likely because of your mixture, especially if she did not have this condition before. I would be very wary of using so much iron while you are breastfeeding your daughter. Babies do not need THAT much iron. When I breastfed my daughter, I noticed that anytime I ate garlic, she would have garlic breath. Also anytime I drank cow's milk (I'm allergic to milk protein) my daughter would have excruciating stomach pains. When I stopped drinking milk, her pain disappeared. PLEASE, be very careful of what you give yourself while you breastfeed. Loss of hair is common after having a baby due to hormone adjustment and stress. I would suggest y9ou simply eat as healthily of food as you can while your body adjusts itself; don't stress over your hair so much right now. (By the way, a good stress soother for you and the baby is stewed apples with cinnamon. Just heat 2 sliced apples in pot or microwave until soft and add cinnamon and eat when warm. I found that my baby would sigh with pleasure whenever I ate this before or while breastfeeding; we both felt calmer and it safely soothed her stomachache) Please go on line and check what excess iron can do to babies and their brains. If it was me, I would wait until I finished breastfeeding before putting such potent (toxic for the baby) concentrations into my body. Please check before going further.. Best wishes for you both..."
10/20/2009: Alessandra from Oklahoma City, Ok replies: "The baby cannot get too much iron from the mother's breastmilk as iron levels in breastmilk are not effected by the mother's iron intake, even if she is anemic. The brown streaks could be caused by a number of things including tartar buildup, which caused significant brown staining on my oldest son's two lower front teeth. I would recommend the mother schedule an appt with a pediatric dentist for a checkup and teeth cleaning."
