Graves' Disease Remedies
"Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease. It most commonly affects the thyroid, frequently causing it to enlarge to twice its size or more (goiter), become overactive, with related hyperthyroid symptoms such as increased heartbeat, muscle weakness, disturbed sleep, and irritability. It can also affect the eyes, causing bulging eyes (proptosis). It affects other systems of the body, including the skin, heart, circulation and nervous system."

TED'S REMEDIES
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "Yes, a good way to get rid of Graves' Disease is to use the same protocol as the Lupus treatment that I mentioned on earthclinic. They work similarly. In addition the body's adrenal exhaustion may be at issue in Graves' Disease so try to take now and then a teaspoon of licorice extract. Since DHEA is an adrenal issue also, taking some of this may also help temporarily for the body to deal with adrenal exhaustion. This will allow the body to reset its hormonal system in balance.
Finally if you have a pathogen at issue, I suggest to take a couple of drops of 3% food grade H2O2 3-6 per glass of water. Don't use the drug store brand, as they have additives. Sometimes allergens that initiate a Grave's disease is coming from the skin. So spray lightly a weak solution 1-3% H2O2 over arms, feet and legs. At least it will remove the allergen source."

03/09/2010: Beverlee from Groveland, Florida, Usa replies: "Hi, I have been diagnosed with Graves Disease, over 6 years ago and I am still suffering from a few symptoms. Of course, when I was first diagnosed I was put on Tapozole and then surgery or the radioactive pill was recommend. Just to name a few of my symptoms, I did have the bulging eyes, lost a lot of weight, heart palpitations, tremors, sensitivity to heat, sweating and the list goes on. I also have goiters. I no longer have the bulging eyes and my weight is no longer an issue but I pretty much still have the other symptoms.
After researching the web and reading a few books, I decided to stop using the medication because it damages the liver and definitely not go with surgery and the quick fix pill. I was told with either option I would be on medication for the rest of my life.
I have yet to find a Dr (covered under my insurance) who will work with alternative methods. I know they are out there but because of financial situation I can't afford to pay out of pocket to visit these Drs. I know a person should never put a price tag on their health but unfortunately that is where I am right now. I'm still hopefully I may find a Dr under my insurance that will take my beliefs into account but until then I am still searching the web and have used this website many times and I'm so thankful it exists.
Since I don't have the guidance of a medical professional, I have been over whelmed on the direction I should take and which methods I should use to cure my disease. I know diet is extremely important and have been trying to adjust my eating habits. I did try to go vegetarian for a year but I think I was putting to much soy into my body and started eating meat and dairy again. I have cut back on the dairy but have a weakness for cheese. I also try not to eat red meat or pork and stick mostly with chicken or fish. I also think I shouldn't drink alcohol but unfortunately since I'm human I tend to have an occasional social drink once in a while. I have tried to eat organic whenever possible. I'm just now adding supplements to my diet. And because of this website, I have been drinking and taking apple cider vinegar pills.
Here is where I might get confused and have some questions. I do know I am iodine deficient and I've recently (4 days ago) started using liquid kelp. I plan on switching to a higher potent (milligrams instead of micrograms)capsule. Is there a difference in Bladderwrack and Kelp? I also want to add Bugleweed Motherwort Compound, Selenium and Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. I'm wondering if this is too much and don't want to over dose myself. Or if iodine is even good for someone who is hyper and not hypo?
I eventually want start doing what you recommended for the Lupus treatment but I'm sure I'll have many questions to ask once I cross that bridge. And finally (for now) I was wondering what the symptoms might be or how would I know if my body's adrenal exhaustion may be at issue or if I have a pathogen at issue?
I thank you so much for your time and please keep up the good work you do for Earth Clinic!

12/28/2010: Mel from Toronto, Canada replies: "I am 26yrs old and have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism almost a year ago and now I look like a frog. I was wondering... Does bugleweed help with bulging eyes?"
09/19/2011: Bcnu147 from Anacortes, Wa, United States replies: "This is a quote from a book dated 1913 called, The Herb Bugleweed. I don't know if this is accurate or not but this is what it says, " Therapeutic Uses, Benefits and Claims of Bugleweed
Traditionally, this herb has been used to cure coughs and respiratory disorders. It is also thought of as a natural remedy for sleeplessness.Bugleweed is a natural source of phytochemical compounds, including various tannins; lithospermic acid; lycopine; flavonoid glycosides; phenolic derivatives such as caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid and rosmarinic acid; essential oil; magnesium; and resin. Bugleweed's medicinal properties are said to be due to the presence of lithospermic acid, as well as the other organic acids in the plant's extract.
The Herb Bugleweed
(Lycopus virginicus)
Britton & Brown Illustrated Flora
2nd Edition (1913)
American bugleweed (Lycopus virginicus) and its European counterpart gypsywort (Lycopus europaeus) were widely used in folk medicine for and treating anxiety, tuberculosis and heart palpitations. Bugleweed extracts were also utilized by gypsies of old as a cosmetic as this herb is a major component for manufacturing black dye, hence the common name "gypsywort".
Extracts from this herb are thought to aid in normalizing heart rate, which is indicative of its potential as an alternative treatment for tachycardia.Bugleweed is used as an alternative treatment to hormone therapy. Components of the plant may lower the levels of the thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroxine. This action could be due to the inhibitory effect of the herbal drug on the binding of the antibodies to the thyroid gland.
Bugleweed herb is commonly used as a natural treatment for some symptoms of Grave's disease, such as palpitations and convulsions. The herbal activity is sufficient for mild cases of the disease and is considered safe for long term administration.
Bugleweed is traditionally used to stop iodine conversion in the thyroid gland and can be used as a natural treatment for hyperthyroidism and related diseases. Bugleweed extracts mainly affect the vascular tissues, as well as the sympathetic nervous system.
The leaves of bugleweed may also be used as a natural cure for wounds and abrasions."http://www.herbal-supplement-resource.com/bugleweed-herb.html"

[YEA] 05/10/2007: Brenda from Springville, Tennessee writes: "Hi everyone, I'd like to add an update on my uses of HP. I use the inhaled method, 10 squirts, twice in a row, usually 2 or 3 times a day,and am so very happy with it. I no longer have broncitis! I was dignosed with Graves disease Dec 06 which caused terrible jitters and rapid heartbeats. I inhale the HP when this happens and within minutes the jitters and rapid heartbeat subside! I can't thank Earthlink.com enough! I tell all my friends about HP and to email Bill Munro, and I tell that Bill will call them back promptly! A special thanks to Bill"

05/07/2010: Kay from London, England writes: "I have had graves disease for about 4 years now. I had an overactive thyroid which was removed 3 years ago but my eyes are still bulging and swollen around the eye area. I am so depressed with looking "like a frog" and would appreciate any advice. I take levothyroxin 150mg daily but this doesn't help the eye disease. I really don't want to have surgery although I couldn't yet anyway as the disease is "still active" I have read the bugleweed can help but I'm not sure how I should take it. I have just today started taking apple cider vinegar supplements in capsule form. Please help me as this disease has already ruined my relationship and depleted my self confidence."

[YEA] 01/25/2010: Barry Richardson from Melbourne, Vic Australia writes: "My wife took 4 drops of bugelweed (orally) every day for nearly two years (2006 -2008) in order to treat and eventually "cure" Grave's disease. During those years she increased and decreased the dose to check for changes in the symptoms which were -- increased heart rate (at night especially) sleeplessness, and agressiveness/intolerance. She increased or decreased the dose accordingly.
That was nearly 3 years ago and she's now clear.
Our GP had not heard of it and a specialist advised against its use.

[YEA] 11/09/2007: Lori from Chesapeake, VA writes: "re: graves cure -- The herb Bugleweed (Lycopus virginicus) has long been used in Europe for treating hyperthyroidism. Bugleweed can be used alone for mild conditions or in combination with anti-thyroid drugs. It works by inhibiting iodine uptake and metabolism, reducing the amount of hormone produced by active cells and it reduces the activity of TSI, the antibodies responsible for Graves' disease. The leaf extract of bugleweed is more active than root extracts. A tincture (alcohol extract) equivalent to 20 mg of the drug is more effective than a tea. If bugleweed is used as a tea, amounts as high as 1-2 grams daily can be used. Lycopus is often used in combination with Melissa officianalis (lemon balm). Although the effects of herbal preparations are mild compared to anti-thyroid drugs, herbs such as bugleweed should not be withdrawn suddenly. As with anti-thyroid drugs, herbs should be weaned with steadily decreasing doses as improvement is noted. The variety Lycopus europaeus (gypsywort) is reported to be as effective as bugleweed."

EYE EXERCISES

[YEA] 04/26/2011: Niecy from Dallas, Texas writes: "Hi. I came across a couple of sites that talk about eye exercises for bulging eyes from Grave's disease but didn't really explain what to do. I suffererd from bulging eyes for years until 2 weeks ago when I did eye exercises. I put a couple of drops of moisture eye drops in my eyes, laid down and started moving my eyes around (while eyes closed) and looked as far right, left, up and down as I could to where I felt pressure in my eyes while doing it. I felt a tingling sensation behind my eyes. The more I moved my eyes around the more the sensation would go away. The next day my eyes started to return to normal.
It's been about 2 weeks and my eyes have returned to normal! I do the exercises while laying down just about everyday. Please let me know if this works for anyone!"

I will try this exercise out... Did you find out anything else about exercising the eye muscles this way or the actual method? Thanks, Faith. P.S. I'm going to make an appt. with a naturopath right away.... I'm about 4 months away from my doctor wanting to do radiation therapy and not about to give up yet!"

FLAXSEED OIL

[YEA] 04/13/2009: Rob from Northeast, USA writes: "Help for Graves Disease Eye Trouble
I have had Graves disease for a couple of years. I have not had a lot of trouble with eye protrusion, but I have suffered several severe struggles with dry, crusty, scratchy, painful eyes. The first round was helped by antithyroid meds. But for the last bout I was no longer on meds. I found that flaxseed oil was very helpful. I have been taking it for a few months now, 1 tablespoon with breakfast, another with supper (on some food). There seems to be a fairly predictable correlation between when my flaxseed oil habit gets interrupted and the return of eye symptoms (which reminds me to get back to the oil)."

FOOD ALLERGIES, SUPPLEMENTS

[YEA] 08/10/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt writes: "Hi I just want to say DONT do RAI or surgery. Why would you remove an organ in your body that is the victim of your immune system. Your thyroid is not the problem it is actually your immune system. I was diagnosed 3 years ago but I know that I have had it since I was a child. Looking back I can remember episodes of hypo and hyper at different points of my life. I have been to an endo who perscribed methimazole. I stopped that about 6 months in when my hair was coming out in clumps and my lab tests were not getting better. Of course my endo wanted me to get rid of my thyroid because Dr's don't like diseases that they don't have control over. If you get rid of your thyroid they can give you fake thyroid for the rest of your life. Not to mention hypo is less fatal in comparison to hyper.
I went to two naturopaths. The first helped a little but the second was the one who helped most. His idea of treating the whole body not just the thyroid really made sense. He started by addressing my immune system which for some reason was attacking my thyroid. He placed me on desicated thymus gland (thymus is part of your immune system that dr's believe is useless to us after childhood). He also tested me for food allergies. I had so many intolerances that I was absolutely shocked. Gluten, dairy, peanuts, almonds. Things that I had been eating in huge amounts. He explained that it might be possible for me to stop all of the intolerant food for six months and I might be able to begin eating some of them again. Gluten it seems was the main culprit. I stoped all for six months and the only one I cannot tolerate now is Gluten. My naturopath explained to me that Gluten is like a bat and when I ingest it, I am hitting my immune system with it as if it were a bee hive. My immune system freaks out and begins attacking my thyroid, adrenals, skin etc.... It made sense to me that. I can have one crouton and I will have a dabilitating migraine and trembles etc. Anyhow I started taking many suppliments as well.
*copper (hypers are usually deficient)
*selenium (hypers and hypos are usually deficient)
*magnesium (helps heart palps)
*potassium (helps heart thumping)
calcium (muscle and bone weakness)
D3 (I was difficient as most people are)
iron ( anemia and to counter the copper intake)
valarian (sleeplessness and stress)
chromium and green tea ( stress and muscle weakness)
Relora (adrenal fatigue that was due to stress)
I know it's alot but they all have a purpose....
Spanish Black Radish (just started recently and is supposed to help sooth graves and release bile from liver)
B Compex (for everything:)
Vit A, C, E, as well.
I am completely in remission now and have been for over a year. I believe that the thymus support was the start of my healing and the * suppliments are the most important ones for maintaining my health at this point.
My 15 year old daughter was diagnosed about 10 months ago. I have skipped the endo and gone for the same treatment that helped me. So far she is getting better and on the rode to remission.
Please don't have surgery to remove an organ that is so important to your health and well being. Afterall it isn't the thyroids fault right. Focus your treatment on the real problem. Your immune system and why it is attacking you. God bless and good health to you all."
Replies08/11/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt replies: "I apoligize for forgetting to say that I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. My daughter was as well. Neither one of us have had any eye issues. But both of us have had very large goiters that are slowly shrinking back to normal."
09/04/2011: Violeta from Chislehurst, Kent, United Kingdom replies: "Hi Jen, your post gives me so much hope and confirms my suspicion that the gluten intolerance could be the culprit for antibodies attacking the thyroid. I haven't been yet diagnosed, I am going to have further checks in the next few weeks but I know that the thyroid is being attacked by antibodies and it started to become overactive. I have been suffering from gluten intolerance for about 6 years, it was a long journey of discovery and understanding what the problem was. The test for gluten intolerance came negative (which is frequently the case). 2 years ago I went on a strict diet for intestinal candida and I can't tell you how much my health improved. I realised straight away that gluten was very bad for me, after staying gluten free, when you come back to gluten based food, you have no doubts how much that affects you. Also I had palpitations and sleepless nights which I couldn't relate to my gluten intolerance condition. Anyway I went to see an endocrinologist, to check my thyroid (2 years ago) and discovered that the thyroid was attacked by antibodies, but the thyroid was functioning in normal limits. He didn't prescribe anything but said to come back in a few months to check it again. For 2 years I nearly forgot about my thyroid. I treated my intestinal candida and tried to stay pretty much gluten free. I didn't have sleepless nights anymore but occasional heart racings which would go away in few days. But few months ago, I started again to eat lots of sweets (I have cravings), pastries, no more gluten free diet. My heart started to race again like crazy for 2 weeks continuously (pulse around 100) and candida symptoms came back. I went to GP and asked for a thyroid check and it came now that my thyroid started to be overactive. I am going to see a specialist soon for tests, but I am not going to start to kill my thyroid with pills. In the last 2 years I learned how much damage gluten can do to one's health: bloating, constipation, migraines, depression, eczema, lack of energy, turning down your immune system etc but I didn't have a clue that it can turn your antibodies to attack your own body... As you very well said, the thyroid is the victim, not the culprit.
I am more than thrilled to find your post confirming what I just started to realise by myself: that there is a direct relation between gluten intolerance and thyroid problems and heart racing. It makes so much sense.
I am going to follow what you did: go back on a gluten free diet, take supplements and I want to see a naturopath but it is not easy to find the right one. Can you please tell me who to contact to help me? I don't know how much of these supplements to take and how. Please help. Thank you so much. Violeta"
09/06/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "Hello Violeta, I would start by searching online for a natural endocrinologist in the United Kingdom. You can also get online help. I would also search for Naturopaths in your area. They are getting more common in the US so I am sure they are where you live as well. People are realizing that they don't want to put those terrible drugs into thier bodies and would rather go the natural route. I have no doubt you are on the right track. Please feel free to ask me any more questions. Good luck Jen!"
09/06/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "I don't know if this will help but I thought it might clarify things a little:)*copper (hypers are usually deficient) 2 mg per day
*selenium (hypers and hypos are usually deficient) 400 mg per day
*magnesium (helps heart palps) 300 to 500 mg per day
*potassium (helps heart thumping) Try to eat your potassium Banana 400 mg, coconut water 600 too 1000 mg, Potato 600 mg, Apricot 1300 mg, Black Strap Molasses 700 mg. You need 3000 to 6000 mg per day.
calcium (muscle and bone weakness) 1000 mg per day
D3 (I was difficient as most people are) 2000 mg per day
iron ( anemia and to counter the copper intake) 8 mg per day
valarian (sleeplessness and stress) I take 1 to 5 capsules per night.
chromium and green tea ( stress and muscle weakness) 25 mcg
Relora (adrenal fatigue that was due to stress) I take 1 pill twice a day (morning and night)"

10/08/2011: Vana from Atlanta, Ga replies: "Hi Jenn: My name is Vanessa and I live in Atlanta. I have had graves disease for some time and was seeking a Naturopath. Do you have his or her information? I would be so grateful. Thanks"
10/11/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "Hello Vanessa, I don't personally know any Naturopaths in Atlanta but I did a search and found one that looks like they might be able to point you in the right direction. Keep in mind that they are still doctors but they usually think much deeper than your average regular doctors. If you are not comfortable with one then you can choose another. They work for you not the other way around. Her name is Dr. Ellen Levy and her number is 404-256-2244. I looked at the services she has available and I would definately ask about the Nutritional Counseling (Based on Hair analysis) and the IgG blood allergy testing. These tests will give you a really good idea what you are deficient in and what is making you immune system go crazy. Ask about a thymus gland support to help get your immune system working properly. When you go to see her make sure you know what she is giving and why. Sometimes Naturopaths like to give wierd concoctions that have a mixture of ingredients. Which is fine as long as you know why and what you should expect them to do for you. Her website is http://www.drellenlevy.com/. Another great website is http://www.naturalendocrinesolutions.com/ this doctor has graves disease and has some really good posts about managing different things. He also does online and over the phone consultations if you want to spend the money. I have read most of his articles and he seems very knowledgeable and capable of helping you. I wish you the best and feel free to contact me with more questions if you want. midge811(at)msn.com."

HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS

I had and still have severe overactive thyroid and bad heart palpitations. I found alternative medicine doc and started to take alternative medications, such as Bugleweed, Melissa. I just started to take all of this a couple days ago, keep you posted... I am really tired of this disease and like all of you want to be cured. God bless all of us"

10/24/2011: Mary from Ancaster, Ontario, Canada replies: "Brazil Nuts for Graves Eye Symptoms!Try it...! A recent study done in Italy, (May 2011) showed that selenium helps decrease graves eye symptoms.
After reading the study, I ate 2 brazil nuts which have selenium content. My eyes felt much better, not as scratchy or sore! I have been doing this for a week now and am so glad I don't have pain in my eyes anymore. I plan to increase the brazil nuts from 2 to 3 in a week or so, to see if any swelling goes down. The study used 2 daily doses of 100 ug/mcg of selenium daily. I estimated 2 brazil nuts equals about 100 mcg/ug. Therefore 2 brazil nuts taken in a.m. And 2 in p.m. Should roughly equal 200 per day of selenium. Word of caution though. Selenium can be dangerous if taken at high doses, which I think is more than 400 ug/mcg per day.
So start slowly and see if your eyes feel better with just 2 per day. Then increase to 3.
Good luck and let us know if you feel any difference."
11/25/2011: Trish from Weston Supermare, North Somerset United Kingdom replies: "Hi I was diagnosed with Graves Hyperthyroidsim in May this year. I was on neomercazole which was reduced too quickly and I had a return of all the symptoms, atrial fib, tremors, etc. I am back on the meds now and settling down (also on half inderal 80mg) My doc also trying to get me to have radio active, which I refuse point blank. I am taking all the supplements listed. My eyes were really sore, scratch, dry and swollen on top lid. I have been taking selenium supplement, I was told to eat brazil nuts which I have been doing for about a month now and now realise that is probably the reason my eyes are feeling so much better. A question though, I see you talk about Apple Cider Vinegar, what does that help with Graves and how much and how do you take it? Thank you for such an informative group. Trish."

HONEY FOR BULGING EYES

[YEA] 08/19/2007: Beatriz from Mexico City, Mexico writes: "Honey Drops cured my bulging Grave's Disease eyes; i just put a drop of honey, pasteurized better, in each eye at night after i was my face, it hurts so much and you will cry but it's worth it, then after 20 minutes i just wash my face not letting water get into eyes and i go to sleep, in morning i apply water of roses concentrate in each eye, two drops, and my eyes are cured almost 70%, i have them like a frog before, now the lids are again defining and below the brow bulgins are almost gone, day by day, feel free to contact me and i send you pictures of before and after, you won't believe the results!"
Replies06/24/2009: Lily from Anaheim, California replies: "I'm very interested in your bulging eyes's treatment, please provide me more feedback thru my email if you could. Thank you so much!"
[YEA] 02/13/2010: Eve from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Usa replies: "I have had symptoms of euthyroid Graves eye disease (normal thyroid with bulging eyes) for many years (I am 39). I read about Beatriz using honey for the eyes - Thank you, Beatriz! I developed my own method of using the honey. Before I go to bed, I put one or two tablespoons of honey in 6 oz. of warm water, stir thoroughly, and wash out my eyes. Washing out my eyes with honey and water has made a difference, and my eye bulging has been reduced. Since the honey eye wash worked, I wondered if my eyes would be helped if I ate honey. I went to the health food store and bought a jar of royal jelly (865 mg.) mixed with honey and ate a teaspoon every night before going to bed. This helped my eyes some, but I wondered if I could get better results by just eating PURE royal jelly, since pure royal jelly is very potent. I started eating half a teaspoon of pure royal jelly before going to bed and this has probably made the biggest difference in reducing my eye bulging. I cannot find pure royal jelly at the store, so I buy it online. Pure royal jelly is yellow and creamy and must remain cold at all times. It has to be shipped in ice packs, and you will have to pay a lot for shipping but it is worth it to reduce the bulging eyes. I have had this disease for a long time, but by washing out my eyes with honey and eating pure royal jelly, my eyes look better every day. I am anxious to look like my old self, but I have to tell myself to be patient because there is no instant cure. It took time for my eyes to get bad, and it will take time for them to heal. Another tip: I used to experience very severe eye pain, and I occasionally still have mild pain. My solution is to put two or three drops of CLEAR iodine (found at the health food store or online, not the drugstore) in a glass of water and take a couple of sips, which eliminates the pain."

01/02/2011: Cathy from Buffalo, Ny replies: "Royal jelly does help the soreness and bulging of the eyes caused by graves disease. I was diagnosed about a year ago with graves disease and my eyes have been sore, dry, and bulging. My husbands family owns an apiary, so we know how well honey and hive products can be so helpful with health issues. About two months ago I started taking 3000 mg of royal jelly each day as a capsule. My eyes are so much better. You can purchase the supplents online. Just do a google search."
08/25/2011: Sarah from Damascus, Syria replies: "Hello there, I've been diagnosed with this disease when I was 17, and now I'm 19. I've been suffering from bulging eyes, and it's making me feel so down and lose my confidence. Nevertheless, my eyes aren't very bulged, but from the lower lid of my eyes they seem to. I've been wondering how long does this honey treatment take? It's been a week so far dealing with this treatment.... But I'm pretty impatient knowing that it hurts to not have my eyes back as before.
please reply asap :) and thank you."
11/07/2011: Jack from Leb, Beirut replies: "Dear Beatriz. Please tell me more about the honey treatment. U drop only once or every evening? I am a Nurse from profession. At work i put the heart monitor , was surprised with my heart racing in sinus tach at 110. My hr used to be in 70's. I ran to my doc again and after all the test was diagnosed with grave dz. That scared me off. I sat on the internet, search . I didn't want to go for medical tx. I knew the side effects. I tried bugleweed liquid herbal extract. I take about 10cc 2x/day. I tried lemon balm but it makes me sleepy. I take flax seed oil as well. I improved a lot. NO more palpitations. No more trembling or weight loss .I go for blood test q 3 mos.slowly but i see improvement each time. I learn to delegate as well. I do yoga on daily basis. REMEDIES NEEDED

12/28/2011: Suzzanne from Ravena, Ny writes: "Hyperthyrodism/Graves Disease: I have been diagnosed but I would love to get more information from others about alternative treatments, if any, besides taking a pill."
Replies12/29/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "Hi Suzzanne, I also have Graves Disease and am currently in "remission". The best advice I received since my diagnosis was to stop looking at the disease as a thyroid issue and start looking at it as an immune system issue. Graves is an auto immune disease. Which means for some reason our immune system is attacking our thyroid. Causing it to produce to much T3 and T4. I have been actively treating my immune system instead of just my thyroid for almost two years now. My thyroid is now as normal as it can get. Balance is the key word. If any of the minerals your body needs are off kilter then you will get different symptoms and sometimes different diseases. Some very helpful websites are: http://www.ithyroid.com/supplement_list.htm and http://www.acu-cell.com andhttp://www.naturalendocrinesolutions.com/
I have found that gluten irritates my thyroid. Since I have a sensitivity to gluten when I eat it my immune system attacks the cells to try to protect my body from harm. Thyroid cells look a lot like gluten cells so now my immune system is attacking my thyroid constantly as well. I try to avoid gluten which helps to keep my immune system calmer. I also take immune system support like marshmallow root and astragulus root. Teds alkalizing formula is also a very good immune system support (baking soda and lemon). I make sure to take D3 and Vit C on a dailey basis and echinacea when I know my immune system is low. I also take dessicated thymus twice a year for a month or so.
I treat my adrenals as well since my naturopath found they are fatigued. Most thyroid conditions either result in adrenal fatigue or are caused by it. For this I take milk thistle, DHEA, valarian, meletonin, relora, magnesium. Basicly the goal is to keep yourself calm. Using anti stress remedies to calm the cortisol production from your adrenals. Tin is very important to the adrenal glands. You can get it in supplements like doggrass, juniper, bilberry, milk thistle, valarian, Irish moss, nettles, barberry, yarrow, blessed thistle, yellow dock, kelp, licorice, devils claw, and senna.
Some of the most important thyroid minerals are selenium, iodine, copper, and iron. Most hyperthyroid patients are low on copper and selenium. But you have to make sure to balance all of the minerals when using supplements or you will cause an imbalance of another kind somewhere else in your body. For my thyroid I take selenium 200 to 400 mcg (very important), Iodorol or lugals iodine 50 mg (also very important), Vit C (a must with iodine supplements), B complex, D3, Zinc, and Copper.
Unfortunately there is no easy fix for graves disease. If you choose to use the anti thyroid drugs from your doctor you can have many other problems (I know I took them for a few months). If you choose surgery or radiation you will also have many other problems that will most likely last your entire life. So I choose to take all of these supplements instead. The reason you have the disease is because there are multiple imbalances in your mineral/ vitamins. It is a good idea to get a hair analysis to see what might be off in your minerals before you start supplementing. You can get them through reputible labs on line or through a naturopath. If you have anymore questions or would like more details on helpful info and supplements please feel free to contact me. I have researched thyroid issues non stop for many years now. I am on EC daily."
12/31/2011: Suzzanne from Ravena, Ny replies: "Thank you for your reply and sharing your knowledge. I am trying to absorb everything I can before I go back to the Endo next month. My appointment is at the end of January so I am hoping that I can "load up" on info and dodge the treatment she will want to prescribe. It is really comforting knowing that you can do this with other remedies besides what they are going to offer."

08/16/2011: Molly from Minneapolis, Mn writes: "I was diagnoised with Hyperthyroidism when I was 16, I was immediatley treated with Iodine Radiation... And shortly became Hypo afterward. As I am getting older, and realizing that I have been on synthroid and ateneol since I was 16 (9 1/2 years) is really starting to bother me. I have two healthy and beautiful children, and I feel unhealthy, and like this disease has cut my life in half. I have my good days, and I have my bad days. I'm completely bald in the front and on the sides (Been wearing wigs since I was 21)... I have the bulging eyes ( I look like a frog)... I'm sure people think I'm high or on drugs most of the time... but it's like why bother explaining.
My glasses and sunglasses do a good job at hiding the shame. Sometimes my eyes will go back in my head on their own... I have the sweating, the nervousness, racing mind/thoughts, slurred speech, double vision (going blind), sensitivity to cold... And sometimes overly hot... My heart beats fast when resting.. And then sometimes I feel like it stops.. And then begins again... Or sometimes it double beats... It just does weird things. I'm moody and irritated.. Short tempered and mad for no reason. I'm like pms'ing just about everyday it seems... My legs and fingers go numb... I feel like my bones are Brital.. And my body aches a lot.. Sometimes I get unbearable pain in my eyes.. But at this point, I'm use to it. I get so tired and exhausted.
I'm just so young, and so tired of letting this disease take over my life. I have to beat it. I see my first endocrinologist this Thursday (what should I expect)??? Believe it or not, I've never seen one. Only my idiot family doctor who just keeps feeding me synthroid and atenenol and telling me to diet and lose weight. She doesn't seem to have the slightest idea, of how physically, emotionally, and mentally this graves disease is. No one actually understands how I feel sometimes. I envy so much to function like a healthy adult again. I don't know why I was cursed with this disease at such a young age. I don't talk about it much with friends and family, and figured it was time to do some long overdue 9 1/2 year research, and find a cure.
Any advice? Any remedies?
I currently take 150mg synthroid, 50mg atenolol, Multivitamin, Vitamin Cw/ Vitamin D and Fish Oil...
Should I be test for vitamin deficiencies? Should I be test for food allergies? Also, I don't know if my thyroid/graves disease was caused by lack of iodine or not... Should I find out the underlying problem?"

I feel for you as I and my 15 year old daughter both have been diagnosed with this terrible disease. I agree that you should stop the synthitic thyroid meds. Though it sounds like you may be Hyper again anyways and if so then the endo will want you to go off of them for sure. I have seen endo's and they really are not much different than a GP but they at least will have more insite as to what is going on as a GP doesn't know alot about anything but a little about a lot:) I would go to your appt. With the understanding that you need to know what is going on internally. Find out your lab results and know that you are in control of your body not them. If the endo says he wants to change your meds, do surgery, or anything else... Do research and make sure you agree. If you don't and he/she won't do as you wish change endo's or go to a naturopath.I have treated both myself and my daughter's Graves holistically and I know it can be done. I believe all immune diseases are caused by imbalances in our mineral and vitamens. Whether over time or recent it may be something you can change by finding out what is missing or deficient and what is too high. I found the most helpful info both hear on this website and on www.ithyroid.com. I would love to help you out if you have any questions I check this website regularly:)"

More importantly, the surgery corrected the double vision as well!It was well worth it to go through the surgery. I looked drastically improved within just 2 weeks! If you have severely protuded eyes, don't put off a consultation with an oculoplastic surgeon that specializes in Graves Disease. "
04/02/2011: Paloma from Nyc, Usa replies: "I am replying to Bobbi from Hickory, NC, about his double vision.
The thyroid disease that you have is the main reason for your double vision, you have to treat your thyroid to get rid of those symptoms, you do not need any surgery in my opinion. I have hyperactive thyroid and double vision is part of my symptoms too- I have a double vision especially when I am tired or even in the morning. I know it is very weird thing and it gives you a huge discomfort. I am treating my thyroid disease with a Bugleweed and I have less of those horrible double vision symptoms right now. You do not need any surgery - treat your thyroid properly and your double vision will go away.
Good luck, paloma"

Replies01/08/2011: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Sara27... You might want to read this article from Dr Abraham who initiated something called the Iodine Project. This project, which is perhaps the most up to date current research on the benefits of Lugol's Iodine, notes how iodine can be used to successfully help cure problems like hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, breast cancer, fibrocysitic breast disease, obesity, uterine fibroids and allergies etc.
Here is the pertinent article:
http://www.iodine4health.com/special/nutrients/magnesium/abraham_magnesium.htm
In the article, Dr Abraham recommends a combination of large dose magnesium(800 - 1200mgs/day) together with Lugol's Iodine(12. 5 mgs/day) for hyperthyroidism. Please note that these dosages are deliberately well above the recommended RDA for both Iodine and Magnesium.
The complex biological and biochemical explanation by Dr Abraham's may be simply translated into this explanation: Due to excess, unregulated Calcium in the body because of deficient body magnesium and/or excess calcium in the diet, this interferes with the body's iodine feedback regulation system, thus encouraging excess production of hormones by the thyroid gland. Magnesium (as Mag Chloride, Mag Citrate or Mag Gluconate are the best forms to take) is what helps to regulate calcium in the body properly.
I would also add Vitamin C(3000 mgs/day), Coenzyme Q10(30 - 200 mgs/day) and Selenium(200 micrograms/day) to this therapy, since an over-active thyroid can also be caused by over-production of dangerous free radicals in the body -- which causes thyroid damage. Therefore Vitamin C(as Ascorbate powder) and CoQ10 will counteract and will help stop the oxidative thyroid damage and Vitamin C and Selenium will also both help the thyroid gland to repair itself."

I am on Levothyroin just increased to 100mg, I have been on 88mg. for years just increased to 100mg.The inflamation is so hard to deal with!
Thank you, Virginia."
Replies06/26/2010: Theresa from Ann Arbor, Michigan replies: "Diagnosed with Hyperthyroid in 2002 I was ordered Synthroid (t4) right away, 88mcg, by a GP. Took it for 7 years, at first it helped my anxiety and feeling cold at night but never felt good as new. In 2009 was under even more stress and current dose was not working I was becoming ever more tired and increased my own synthroid (because I no longer had insurance for blood tests). I upped it to 120mcg and soon developed bulging eyes, and lesions on the front lower part of my legs. (classic hyperthyroid signs - Hashimotos). So I bit the bullet paid to see a Naturopath who sent me to a holistic doctor who tested for adrenal function and thyroid. Results were low thyroid, low adrenal (I had stopped the self prescribed 120mcg and was taking 88mcg). I was then placed on compounded t3/t4 with a starting dose and given additional dosages to titrate up from there until i felt hyper symptoms. Eyes are down, legs are healed. So that was my experience.
In conclusion - the new doctors felt i had hyperthyroid caused by hashimotos which can cause your levels to go up and down. hard to stop the inflammatory reaction. but i feel much better now - being monitored for lab results AND how I feel. Now taking t3 25 mcg - t4 125 mcg.
Good luck,
Theresa"

[QUESTION] 02/14/2010: Diane from Newtown, 18940 writes: "I am a 50 year old woman just diagnoised with graves disease. Removing my thyroid or radioactive iodine treatments are my options for treatment. My question is do you have to remove or destroy the thyroid to treat it? Can you take supplements and leave in the thyroid?"
Replies02/14/2010: Joyce from Joelton, Tn. replies: "Hello Diane from Newtown,
Sorry you are having thyroid problems, but there is another option besides removing the thyroid or nuking your thyroid - it's called suppressing the thyroid.
Fortunately, one side effect of Lugol's solution or SSKI (both are potassium iodide solution) is suppression of the thyroid. In the states you now need a prescription for either of them, but I found one source of it at an aquarium shop when I typed in Lugol's solution. There is a possibility that some infection triggered this (any prolonged sore throats
recently??) and it just might regain it's normal function if just suppressed for awhile. One source I read on line suggested to take your temperature to know when suppression occurred (apparently it drops your body temp when suppressed). From personal experience, suppression occurs after a month or two of 6 drops per day in unchlorinated water. Since yours in overactive, you would probably be safe with 6 drops 2 x a day until you can tell a difference and then decrease it to 4 to 6 drops per day. After suppressing it for awhile, you omit the potassium iodide solution for a week or so and have your thyroid function retested.Joyce
P.S. Nuking the thyroid destroys it. Suppressing the thyroid leaves the thyroid active and it can bounce back when the Lugol's or SSKI is discontinued."

Pls i need an herbal cure to this embarrassing disease. Please help me i'm looking like a frog."
Replies04/16/2009: Lucky from Sb, NJ USA replies: "Personally I have not tried any of these remedies but I just wanted to help so giving some ideas that I read some where. But please check with your doctor before you deceide to use any of these medications. The Green Pharmacy by James A. Duke
"If you have symptoms of Graves' disease, see a doctor and take the prescribed medication. Do not attempt self-treatment, even though it worked for the young woman whose story began this chapter. In addition to following your doctor's advice, and with his permission, you might also try these herbs.
Bugleweed (Lycopus, various species). Bugleweed has a considerable folk history for treating thyroid conditions, and modern research supports this use. This herb inhibits iodine metabolism and reduces the amount of hormone that's produced by thyroid cells.
Leaf extracts are more active than root extracts. The recommended oral preparation is a tincture (alcohol extract) rather than a tea. In one study using laboratory animals, bugleweed tincture resulted in a significant decrease in thyroid hormone levels.
Bugleweed is widely used in Europe as an herbal treatment for early-stage Graves' disease, often in combination with lemon balm. However, I must caution that bugleweed--and other herbal treatments for Graves' disease--have mild effects and are best used in early stages of the condition or in addition to synthetic pharmaceuticals.
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). In Europe, lemon balm, also known as melissa, is often recommended along with bugleweed for treating Graves' disease. Studies show that lemon balm causes a decrease in blood and pituitary levels of TSH after a single injection, thus reducing thyroid hormone production. It's not clear if lemon balm has a similar effect when taken orally, but I believe the chances are good. It's probably worth a try.
Self-heal (Prunella vulgaris). A quarter-pound serving of self-heal greens with bugleweed tubers, spiced up with basil, oregano, rosemary and spearmint, should contain significant quantities of the compound rosmarinic acid, which helps suppress thyroid hormone production.
Kelp (Laminaria, various species). Herbal pharmacologist Daniel Mowrey, Ph.D., author of The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine and Herbal Tonic Therapies, notes that among the Japanese who consume a great deal of kelp, thyroid disease is practically unknown, but among the Japanese who have become Westernized and eat little or no kelp, thyroid disease is on the rise
You can buy powdered kelp in health food stores to sprinkle on your food as a seasoning.
Gravestea
To make a tasty mixed herb tea that combats Graves' disease, combine two teaspoons of lemon balm with one teaspoon of bugleweed and then add mint, rosemary, self-heal and verbena to taste. I think drinking this tea regularly just might help.
Verbena (Verbena, various species). Often called vervain, verbena seems to have properties similar to those of self-heal. Extracts have been shown to suppress thyroid hormone production by influencing levels of TSH in the body.
Broccoli (Brassica oleracea). Remember how George Bush hated broccoli? His aversion to that wonderful vegetable deprived him of something that might have helped treat his Graves' disease. broccoli contains naturally occurring substances called isothiocyanates, which help restrain the thyroid from producing too much hormone. When Bush was diagnosed with Graves' disease, several alternative health authorities urged him to eat broccoli. One even published a book titled Why George Should Eat broccoli.
Radish (Raphanus sativus). All of the cruciferous vegetables gently and naturally suppress thyroid hormone production, but radishes do it best, according to medical anthropologist John Heinerman, Ph.D., author of Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs. Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, radishes, rutabagas and turnips. Radishes are used in Russia precisely for this purpose."

SUPPLEMENTS
10/24/2009: Timothy from Chicago, Illinois writes: "I get flare-ups of hyperthyroid symptoms - my test results have come back with the markers of graves disease. I have taken these symptoms to help with my hyperthyroid/jitteriness/insomnia/racing thoughts. If I take them for a few days - a few weeks and then re-take a thyroid test, my thyroid levels actually show remarkable improvement as my symptoms improve:
L-Tryptophan - 500milligrams - 3 pills up to 3X a day (without food)
Magnesium Chloride - 2 teaspoons 3X/a day (with food). I have also used Magnesium Citrate 1-2 teaspoons up to 3X a day. I think I prefer the Magnesium Chloride.
Magnesium Glycinate 400milligrams - up to 3X/day (with food)
Vitamin E - I know some doctors advise against taking large amounts of vitamin E so please check with your doctor. When I get very jittery vitamin E helps make me tired and calm me down so I'll take up to 800 iU a day of vitamin E as well.
These are the supplements that have significantly helped me. Please check with your doctor first!"

08/12/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt replies: "Oh no.... It breaks my heart to read your post. Don't be scared it is not the end of the world I promise. You must be having eye symtoms to be so upset after googling it. I too did the same thing as you and googled the day I found out I had it. That was three years ago. I am completely better now. You can go the natural route and see a Naturopath or you can get help from an Endocrinologist. I posted on the 11th of August some of the treatments I have done that have put me in complete remission. Remember that you can change doctors if you think they are not trying hard enough to help you out. Google some more. Sometimes doctors don't know whats best for you. In fact most of the time they don't. They only know a certain amount of things about any one disease or illness (since there are billions of them) everything else they look up in a very large book:) If they are that commited to your health. Otherwise they will put you in one catagory (Graves Disease) and treat you with the same drugs and recamendations they did for the last person with Graves. I would love to help you in any way possible if you have any questions please ask. I have children and actually one of mine was diagnosed with graves disease as well. It is only scary when you don't have the knowledge to feel confident you are in control of your health. Make sure the doctor tests all of the hormones involved with graves every time. TSH, free T3, and free T4. Also make sure (since you are on Tapazol) that you are getting a liver function test every 3 months. Unfortunatly I will not be of help if you are having eye symptoms as I haven't had any yet (knock on wood). Good health to you and I hope you are doing better soon."
09/01/2011: Tina from Prescott, Arizona replies: "Inquiry for Jen from Bozeman, MtI was diagnosed with graves 10 years ago and have been on methemizole ever since. I am not doing well, I am extremely irritable and sad. I have tried bugleweed, lemon balm, and many other suggestions I have found. I am curious what your doctor/s did with you that helped you go into remission. I am in Arizona and haven't found the right doctor for me yet. Money makes it hard to work with the naturopaths because it seems like they are prescribing expensive supplements that they are not sure will work, but their idea is to test things with me and go from there. I just don't have the funding to be spending several hundred dollars every month to test products that may or may not help me. I am scared that my liver is being effected by the medicine and my relationships certainly are because I am not in a rational mental space.
Any details of your success story would be so appreciated.
thanks, tina"
09/01/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt replies: "I completely know where your coming from. I to cannot afford the naturopathic remedies that end up costing hundreds of dollars per month on top of the dr visits which insurance doesn't even pay for if you are lucky enough to have it in the first place. I believe it is a combination of treatments that helped me both from the naturopath as well as from the research and self help stuff I have implemented myself. The foundation of what started my healing is a supplement called thymex which can be purchased on amazon. It is desicated thymus and I purchase it every few months for $16. 00. It supports your immune system. Which for whatever reason is attacking our thyroids with this disease. It sounds contradictory to support your immune system when it is attacking your thyroid but it works. I have treated my 15 yr old daughter using it as well and she is much better and on the road to remission as well. The other minerals and supplements I am using are:Moodiness (hormonal and usually ovarian related) 1. Wild yam cream (progesterone) with a zinc supplement and/or 2. DHEA with a copper supplement. I can tell which one is needed and I very it depending on my period and mood. If it is heavy and long I am progesterone deficient so I take wild yam and zinc. If it is short and light I am estrogen deficient so I take the second two. I will continue taking them until I begin to feel normal again. It usually takes about 1 week or so to notice a difference.
Heart palpitations: Magnesium (250 to 500)and potassium every day (coconut water has 600 to 1000 mg of potassium in each can) I also will take a little extra potassium when I am swollen as it is an imbalance of sodium to potassium that causes this. The magnesium I take a little extra if I am unusually tense and need to relax a bit. It helps me sleep too.
Selenium: to help the conversion of thyroid hormones so there is not to much t4 or t3 and things can run smoothly. Selenium is one of the big ones I think has healed me. You should take a little more than the recemended dosage as we are usually deficient and it is so important for our thyroids. Usual dosage is about 200mg I usually take at least 400 mg per day.
iodine: 7 mg per day. (contrary to most doctors beliefs most hypers are actually iodine deficient and this is what caused them to go hyper in the first place) Flouride, bromine, and chlorine displaces iodine and does not do the job that iodine does so our thyroids malfunction.
I blend of GABA, theonine, relora, and a few other calming ingredients to help me sleep and deal with life. It really helps me to keep calm in situations where I would otherwise freak out. (I have five kids:)
Manganese: Is very beneficial to hypers and hypos. I can't remember exactly why. I will get back to you on that.
For my liver: Which has been through alot over the years as well. I very these herbs and supplements to keep my liver flowing( when one runs out I go to the next one). Dandalion root, licorice, milk thistle.
desicated Thymus gland: I only take a months worth about every 3 to six months. If I feel like my moods are getting worse and my heart palpitations are coming more often I know that my thyroid is probably getting more active so I order a bottle. Take it three times a day for 30 days and so far all of my blood work has been great for over a year now.
I also take A, E, C, Calcium, D3, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Mostly it is a guessing game unfortunately. I have researched this issue for many years on the internet and at school. My family has suffered both hashimoto's and graves for a long time. I will never give up on finding things that will help. I am currently using the process of painting my goiter with iodine and watching it shrink slowly but very noticably. I get all of these supplements from the health food stores or amazon. I believe that every condition is caused by an imbalance in the minerals/ vitamins which causes an imbalance in hormones and pH and many other issues. We can't supplement with one thing without causing another to go crazy. For example Zinc and Copper are antagonists. Zinc and Progesterone are..... Buddies. Copper and estrogen are... Buddies. One goes deficient the buddy does as well. The antagonists party it up and cause many other problems in thier wake. It is a constant balancing act which gets tiresome but I feel so great and don't ever want to go back to taking those drugs that I could feel were wrong for me. Another helpful tip is that if you supplement with potassium for edema then make sure to take magnesium as well. Magnesium helps potassium get into the cells where it is needed. Iodine and Flouride are antagonists. Iodine is the weaker of the two so if you are drinking flouridated water etc... Iodine will loose the battle unless you are supplementing with iodine at a higher level than flouride. I know this is way to much info to take in but I have a hard time deciding which knowledge to leave out and which to keep in. Sorry. I hope this helps. Let me know if I can help with anything else. The mood thing is so hard. I was in the same boat. I thought I was going to cause my hubby to divorce me. My poor kids too. Chin up though. It is possible to feel better with a little knowledge. Best of luck, Jen!"
09/01/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt replies: "So sorry I also should mention that the naturopath tested me for food intolerances and we found there were some big ones. It seams that Gluten intolerance is a huge one for Graves as well as most auto immune diseases. It nearly killed me to stop gluten but now after 1 year of not eating it I only miss it about once a month;) Once I make it through that week of craving it I am fine. The pain I get when I eat it makes me instantly sorry I did. Migraines, joint pain, as well as gastrointestinal issues. Just more of my (long) story:)"
09/04/2011: Marlane from Geelong, Victoria, Australia replies: "Tina, Google the ithyroid site. ithyroid is the best site I have found on the net dealing with Hyperthyroidism. cheers"
