Diverticulitis Remedies
"Diverticulitis is a common digestive disease particularly found in the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches (diverticula) on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed.
The development of colonic diverticulum is thought to be a result of raised intraluminal colonic pressures. The sigmoid colon (Section 4) has the smallest diameter of any portion of the colon, and therefore the portion which would be expected to have the highest intraluminal pressure. The postulate that a lack of dietary fiber, particularly non-soluble fiber* (also known in older parlance as "roughage") predisposes individuals to diverticular disease is supported within the medical literature.
It is thought that mechanical blockage of a diverticulum, possibly by a piece of feces or food particles, leads to infection of the diverticulum." (Wikipedia)

[YEA] 06/01/2011: Rilo B. from Crescent City, Ca : "I got diverticulitis after I introduced elk meat into my diet ( elk meat is very lean) while living in Montana one spring 10 yrs ago. That summer went I on a camping trip(to oregon) and took elk jerky, a 5 pound bag of almonds and in the mornings would pick wild blackberries and eat almonds and jerky thru the day, within a week started getting pains and ended up in the ER , ( no help @ ER- gave me maalox).
Desperate for relief I visited a healthfood store in Brookings, OR and the kind store owner, (after asking me what I had been eating) quickly told me that the combination of elk, berries &almonds was causing diverticulitis. She then brought a tall bottle of Aloe Vera juice, some papaya juice & papaya tablets and told me to just start drinking the Aloe and to eat papaya tablets before each meal from now on - was cured within a few days. Free advice that saved me from more useless Dr. appts. and a lifetime of recurring problems.
I was really saddened when I met people who had had sometimes 5 surgeries for diverticulitis in Montana where elk is plentiful after that.... Once again -another example of medical community failing to help with something as simple as Aloe Vera juice & papaya for this awful, painful & sometimes life threatening condition. Even though I would tell people about this simple solution... They opted for believing their Dr.s advice that they needed surgery - after all Dr.s being a gift from God and all, win some, lose some "wisdom never lies" -Homer... Now I always check earthclinic before making a Dr. appt. to see if I can heal myself."
Replies08/06/2011: Mike from Nyc, Ny replies: "Thanks WILD BLACKBERRY GUYAte them in a field for days and started to get left side pain... Diverticulitis pains: going to try ALOE JUICE, Papaya Tablets, etc. tomorrow! THANKS for sharing."
[YEA] 08/06/2011: Johanna from Colorado Springs, Colorado replies: "Been doing the Aloe Vera juice, but never thought about adding papaya. My first bout with diverticulitis happened after I gorged on raspberries from my back yard. After waiting all summer, they seemed to ripen overnight, and I indulged a little too much. After 7 weeks of anti-biotics and still in pain, the Dr. suggested surgery. I went straight to the internet for alternative remedies and found Aloe Vera juice listed. That was 6 years ago. Now, when I feel a twinge, I hit the juice!"
08/07/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Johanna, can one really get diverticulitis because of eating too many raspberries? I thought that were terribly healthy and the only thing you could get from eating too many was diarrhea? But diverticulitis, if I understand well, comes from constipation. I am interested in this subject because we are intending to grow raspberries in our new house so I might be tempted to eat a lot more of them but I don't want to get health problems!"
08/10/2011: Mary from San Carlos, California, Usa replies: "I believe it is the seeds from the berries that get caught in the pockets of the diverticulitous in the colon that cause the problem, along with nuts and seeds like sesame seeds and so forth. This is what a Dr. told my friend who had a severe case of diverticulitis."
09/30/2011: Richard from Omaha, Nebraska replies: "found this site very helpful. Had divert a year ago and did the standard antibiotics. Now I make sure I use GSE if any first signs appear, also heaping tbsp of psyllium every day, if I remember! Regardng the theory of small seeds affecting the bowel, at least two good doctors in omaha tell me its an old, unproven idea, searching I found comfirmation on webmd and the mayo clinic site that there is no proof that seeds affect.. However, one should keep track of what you eat and determine what affects you. Maybe you will or are bothered by seeds of some sort. you know best how your body reacts to food."
10/07/2011: Wildbilll62 from Holland, Pa, United States replies: "My first comment is that people die from divriticulitis - particularly if the condition has progressed and has resulted in a perforation of the colon. If your pain is so significant and just seems to be getting worse - head to the ER. Once your condition is stabilized then perhaps these alternate therapies may alleviate the condition. My colon had a small perforation and so I was admitted immediately and put on antibiotics and restricted diet for four days. Someone very close to me had a complete perforation, was admitted to the ER and had surgery (sigmoidectomy) the same day. In order to heal from that surgery, he had to wear a colostomy bag for weeks. He was very lucky and could have died. There are many other side effects from divriticulitis. The colon becomes inflamed and excreting waste becomes very difficult. A consequence of this, in my case, was that my bladder also became inflamed and anytime the bladder had fluid, it was very painful.
I'm back at home now and revisiting this site to see if there is a way to avoid surgery. I had tried some of the remedies here prior to my hospital stay but I think the colon had already perf'ed and so anything I tried was ineffective. Now that things seem to have settled a bit I will try this alternative remedy and see how it goes.
As for whether eating seeds or nuts or what have you is the cause of divriticulitis, as one surgeon told me in all of the sigmoidectomies he has done, he has never seen a seed or nut lodged into the infected divriticulum. Be well."
[YEA] 11/07/2011: Pmc from Clarkston, Washington, Us replies: "We had very excellent results after just the first dose of AV juice and papaya pills for my husband's diverticulosis/diverticulitis. Much quicker than antibiotics. He looks and feels good as new and has added this to his prevention regimen. Love finding this website!"
12/30/2011: Cindy from Whitehorse, Yukon replies: "Wondering how many ounces a day I need to take of the aloe Vera juice ? Thoughts ???"
01/02/2012: Robert from Atlanta, Ga. replies: "I use one-third cup aloevera gel, mixed with two-thirds buttermilk. Once or twice daily."
02/19/2012: Tammy from Pittsburgh, Pa replies: "I have had 3 cases of diverticulitis in 3 months. Dr wanted to do surgery, but I decided to go the natural route. What has worked for me is combination of only very healthy (organic) food, the most easily digestible. I made soup stock with organic free range chicken, added veggies and let simmer with bone in for 12 hours. There are alot of vitamins in the soup and it's easy to digest. I also took supplements of digestive enzymes, probiotics (chewable and goat yogurt and goat kefir), aloe vera juice, and this all seemed to help. I also want to mention the importance of exercise as long as you are past the pain. I walk, lift light weights, ride stationary bike 5 days a week for 1 to 1 1/2 hours each time, but any exercise is good. I have lost 21 pounds since aug of '11 and I feel healthier than I have in years. I have been blessed to share my illness to health journey with several people and encourage them. I just started a couple days ago with adding raw veggies into my diet and it's going well. I still take the probiotics and the digestive enzymes to keep my body on track. Best wishes to all of you. Thank you for allowing me to share."
03/25/2012: Stanley\\\\\\\'s Mom from Boston, Ma replies: "Thank you for these posts. I'm on my second round of antibiotics and Drs are starting to mention surgery. Not going there. I know all Aloe Vera juices are not the same, are people buying any special types? Straight papaya juice? I switched to kagen water, lots of it, vegies brown rice, yogurt and raw honey. Im afraid of everything :) but completely determined to beat this."
03/26/2012: Fra-fra from Mineral Wells, Texas replies: "I had diverticulitis problems for a long time, I found out several years ago that Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) taken regulary keeps the flair ups at bay. You can take 12 drops of GSE three times a day until you get it under control, then take 12 drops once a day. I used to just put it in a small amount of water and follow it with a full glass of water (really does taste bad). I now get empty capsules and put my 12 drops in them. Hope this helps you as it did me. Blessings"
03/30/2012: Judy from Chicago, Illinois, Usa replies: "Read some books. Try Serovera (dehydrated aloe plus l glutamine) also other glyconutrient aloe products."
05/18/2012: Michele from Reno, Nevada replies: "I have had two flare ups of diverticulitis. After the second one, I was so afraid I was going to get cancer. I started taking Metamucil. The directions say to take it three times a day. I have been doing this and have had no problems like before."

[YEA] 04/01/2007: Maisha from San Francisco Bay Area, California: "I hope yu have a few minutes to read thru this. I've tried to keep it brief, but that's just not possible when praising ACV! There are NUMEROUS instances where ACV came to the rescue!!
1) I discovered ACV when my stomach ulcer was SO bad, every breath hurt, smoking just burned my stomach and, after eating, pain was constant. I was drinking liquid antacid straight from the bottle every few minutes.
A vegan friend told me that stuff was WORSE for me than the ulcer. He fixed an 8 oz glass of water with equal parts of ACV and honey (2 Tbs each; more honey if needed). By the time I took the THIRD swallow, I could feel the pain and pressure lessening like bubbles bursting inside. I started making it by the gallon (1/2 Cup ACV, 1/2 Cup honey and fill jug with water). Keep it in the fridge and shake before serving. I drank a glassful 30 minutes after EACH meal. In LESS than a month, I was symptom free and have had no problem since. I still smoke, I eat any/everything I want and no problems. I've fixed it for many, many people with acid reflux, chronic indigestion and diverticulitis. Every one of them was able to get off prescription meds within 3-4 weeks. (There's an additional regimen for curing diverticulitis. I'll send it in another time).
I started reading about ACV and found it balances Ph: if you're too acidic, it makes yu more alkaline and vice-versa...."

11/09/2010: Stanley from Huntingdon, Pa/usa replies: "Several years ago I had diverticulitis to the extent that I just wanted to die. Somewhere I read about Apple Cider Vinegar and cayenne pepper. This is the formula I used - 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper in 10 oz of water. In two hours I was feeling better. Using this formula for 3 days totally eliminated this problem. I have been using the Apple Cider Vinegar and cp for at least 10 years and it has fixed many other problems. Wishing you well."
11/10/2010: Betty from Oakville, Ontario/canada replies: "Thank you so much Stanley. How many times a day did you take the ACV/Cayenne pepper"
11/12/2010: Betty from Oakville, Ontario Canada replies: "Hello Maisha
I would so appreciate the regime for treating divraticulitis with ACV. I expect my doctor will be suggesting surgery. The dosage and daily frequencies would be a real God sent. Many thanks."
09/12/2011: Bill from Phila, Pa replies: "What about grapefruit seed extract WITH ACV? Anyone ever experiment with that combination?"
04/30/2012: Nikki from Fairview, Nc replies: "Yes please what is the additional regime for diverticulitis? Im 31 and have had this since I was 23, the first time in my life when I regularly ate strawberries. I can not eat them or popcorn. Lately I have back pain related to flare ups and I cant afford to go to a doctor. I am goiing to try the acv/honey but need all additional information possible. Thanks!"

DIETARY SUGGESTIONS

[YEA] 12/07/2007: Steve from Pike County, PA, USA: "I was diagnosed with diverticulosis a number of years ago. I tried a natural product called AMP Molocure which is suppose to be very concentrated and made from Aloe Vera. I followed the directions for an entire year. It was quite expensive and I don't feel that it did much of any good for me. I think the key is to change your eating habits and cleanse your colon. Last year [2006] I used a colon cleansing product available at herbdoc.com and while it seemed to help I still had periods where I would pass blood with bowel movements for 10 days after eating corn or a lot of peanut butter or strawberries, etc. Not giving up, a year later I did a second bowel cleanse and also a liver/gall bladder and kidney cleanse. I switched to a healthier diet which was vegetarian on weekdays and only ate meat on week-ends and then only natural or organic meats with no hormones or antibiotics. I also added oat bran to my diet twice a day and I drink fruit juice with green superfood [spirulina, chorella etc.]with frozen grapes (including the seeds) in a blender every morning. This seems to have worked! For the past 3 months I can eat corn and popcorn & all those other foods that caused me to bleed before with no problems. I feel no need of going for another colonoscopy - I know I'm better but I also know if I go back to eating processed foods and the rest of the typical American diet I can expect the diverticulosis to return. I'll be 61 in February 2008."

FIBER
12/12/2011: Night Bird from Powell, Ohio: "I had an acute diverticulitis in 2004 and was admitted to ICU for 3 days while teaching at Baldwin Wallace College in a Summer music camp 2 hours away from home. I could have died if a colleague didn't find me fainted with shock from losing so much blood (5 bags of blood transfusion) in ladies restroom.
I was lucky the doctor only cut many polyps along my colon and didn't perform surgery on me, but seriously warned me if this happens again, he would cut my colon out!! Fearfully I came home and watch my fiber intake on a daily basis. Make sure we all take sufficient fiber everyday, but watch the liquid intake as well to prevent the fiber from getting stuck in your intestines! Fiber, fiber, tasteless fiber, you are my lifesaver!!"

[YEA] 09/18/2007: M F from Mineral Wells, Texas: "In the past I've been troubled with Diverticulitis to the point I had to take anitbiotics. This would happen about every 3 to 4 months. I started taking Grapefruit Seed Extract when I'd feel an attack coming on. I would take 12 drops in a glass of water 4 times a day. After about 4 days the pain would subside. Then after several months I would have another attack and do the same. I finally got smart, I take 12 drops (GSE) in a glass of water each and every night with out fail. I am now free from the attacks and when I do feel like an attack is coming on I do the 12 drops (GSE) twice a day and soon go back to just once a day. I hope this helps others that are bothered with this condition, it has made a big difference in my life. I don't like to take antibotics. I have just found this web site and am really interested in reading about all the different cures and remedies. I'm going to try several of those mentioned."
Replies06/25/2008: Joan from Endicott, NY replies: "Comments to Noni juice Honolulu, HI I am writing to ask if the sender will share her recipe for the homemade noni juice that seemingly helped her diverticulitis... I am 75 years old, had my first attack of diverticulitis yesterday, went to ER, was diagnosed, and today have been searching the web.....5feef3"
[YEA] 05/29/2009: Amaury from New York, New York replies: "My elderly mother had an acute case of diverticulitis. From July 2007 to July 2008 she was taken to the emergency room six times. Just around the 5th day of every other month (a two-month frequency) she would get an attack: First starting with a minor discomfort on the lower left side of her abdomen and gradually gaining intensity as the days went by up to the point she couldn't walk or do just about anything. Repeated tests, hospitalization and antibiotics were taking a toll on my mother, who otherwise is an energetic and enthusiastic 75 year-old person. Two meetings with a team of surgeons at her hospital, and the consensus was the removal of her entire colon. My mother though there was no other option. I though otherwise, since I educated myself about the disease and knew there could be other venues. I placed the surgeons on-hold while I experiment with different diets for my mother (none of them worked). I knew that the overgrowth of bad bacteria on her colon was a mayor factor. Now, if I only could kill them all.
Until I found this site. The testimony of "M F" (from Mineral Wells, Texas) was the key. I spent so much time reading about Grapefruit Seed Extract that I became convinced, this was worth a try. To all of you suffering from this condition read this with all your hope because I am not making this up: MY MOTHER STARTED TAKING THIS REMEDY LATE JULY OF 2008 AND AS OF THIS WRITING (MAY 29, 2009) SHE HAS NOT HAD ANY ATTACK (I myself am getting goosebumps as I say this), and she has been the person I'm always accustomed to see: energetic, active and in good humor.
Thanks to MF, thanks to this website, thanks to the Internet, thanks to the Supreme Being I believe in for giving me the opportunity to find this wonderful, natural medicine called Grapefruit Seed Extract. Please feel free to contact me if you need more information. I'm willing to share as much as possible."
06/28/2009: Jeff from Bath, UK replies: "Guess what, the tablets my wife takes for high blood pressure, stops her from ever using, grapefruit, in any form. So maybe Noni?"
02/02/2010: Kailani from Lahaina, Hi replies: "I have been dealing with this painful affliction for 6 years. Terrible attacks of 3 to 4 a year. I recently tried the GSE a couple times a week but did not drink the 12 drops every evening. I am going to try the 12 drops every night and see if I have better luck. I want this debilitating madness to end. Has anyone else tried it recently?"
[YEA] 05/15/2010: Gabrielle from Schuylkill, Pennsylvania replies: "I found out I have diverticulosis the hard way... when it became a serious case of diverticulitis with a perforated intestine and peritonitis. I had to have a foot of my large intestine removed during emergency surgery and spent a week in the hospital.
Since then I've only had a couple minor bouts with pain, as I'm very careful what I eat now. However, this past week it became a daily problem - both pain and occasional nausea were really dragging me down, making me feel miserable.
I finally checked earthclinic and read the post about grapefruit seed extract. Lucky for me, I have some. I tried the 12 drops / glassful of water and within the first hour my symptoms were diminishing quite noticeably. After four hours they had completely disappeared. I did take one more "dose" six hours after the first one and, so far, I'm feeling great!
Now I know what to take - not sure if I'll do the daily regimen, as the stuff tastes rather unpleasant, and I rarely have any problems - but having it on hand certainly makes me feel better.
Thank you SO much for this info! You've saved me a trip to the doctor and taking antibiotics (which I hate to do). "
[YEA] 06/18/2010: Stibbs from Skipton, North Yorkshire replies: "Just to let you know that, after the great reply that a forum member gave about his mother who suffers from Diverticulitis, mine is now non existent.
I cannot believe I am writing this after suffering for so long with this terrible disease.
It will stop the pain within an hour, believe you me.
The taste is horrible, but I have found a way of hiding it, tonic water, you can't taste it. If you fancy a tipple after your hard days work you can also add it with the tonic.
I cannot thank you guys enough and the chances of stumbling on this site to finally stop all the pain I have had.
Get some Grapefruit Seed Extract NOW, amazing stuff. If you need any more info I would be more than elated to help.
Thank you."
[YEA] 10/21/2010: Janet from Alexandria, La, United States replies: "GSE has kept my Diverticulitis at bay for 2 years. At the first dull ache, I drink 2oz orange juice mixed with 15 drops of GSE. Stir well as you drink it, because the GSE settles to the bottom instantly. Repeat 2-3 times a day, then decrease the drops in the following days as you improve. If I take one dose daily or every-other-day, using 6 drops with 2 oz orange juice, I never have attacks. This has kept me free of attacks for 2 years now."
03/21/2011: Monica from San Diego, Ca replies: "Hi, I am extremely interested in finding out where can somebody buy the GSE oil? I live in San Diego and I've tried different places. I found the pills but I've been told that the oil is for cooking, so is there a specific place where I can get it, or is it really the cooking oil the one you mention? Also, If I got the pills can I start taking them daily and how many instead of the oil? Please reply, I am desperate trying to help my boyfriend with his diverticulitis problem. Thank you."
03/22/2011: Jayne from Seattle, Wa replies: "Monica... You're getting GSE (grapefruit seed extract) mixed up with grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil is for cooking. Grapefruit seed extract can be purchased at any health food store or natural foods market in either capsules or in liquid drop form. The common brand I use is Nutrabiotic."
03/23/2011: Ti from Houston, Tx replies: "Grapefruit seed extract works miracles when combined with high quality vitamin C.Usana has an amazing product called proflavanol-C that has both these ingredients. 09/23/2011: Hef from Ontario, Canada replies: "While doing some research on Grapefruit Seed Extract.... I found something which is making me skeptical of using it:Grapefruit seed extract may owe its antimicrobial action to toxic chemical additives.
10/09/2011: Believer from Franklin, Tn replies: "Thank you Earth Clinic! My husband was about to have surgery and I found this information. He started taking the grapefruit seed extract and NAG (natural pills that help to heal the mucus membrane). He hasn't had any pain or flairups since then!!!! At his follow-up colonoscopy they only found a few MILD diverticulum and the doctor said, "you loook great! "."
02/29/2012: Cligie from Marietta, Ga, United States replies: "I use grapefruit seed extract only when I have a diverticulitis attack and I find it to be effective. However, researchers have found benzethonium chloride or triclosan in many samples of liquid and powdered grapefruit seed extracts so I would not use it except as necessary. I take 4 oz. of raw milk kefir each day (2 oz. In the morning 1/2-hour before breakfast and 2 oz. before going to bed). I have started using organic UNREFINED coconut oil in my cooking (no coconut taste) and I even spread it on my toast - delicious and still no real coconut taste. During my first attack a few years ago, the medicine was making me very ill so I researched on the internet to see if their was someway I could heal without those terrible meds.I came upon a site called greattastenopain.com. It is all about how you combine your food. I can eat ANYTHING I want (well, almost anything) as long as I combine it the way the site tells me to combine it. I wish I could say that I stick to it all the time, but I don't. However, if I start to have pain, it will stop almost immediately if I go to that way of eating. There is a four-day free diet on the site and sometimes that is all you need. However, I have purchased her materials and found that they are worth every penny - not that expensive either."
05/12/2012: Fl-rn from Orlando, Florida replies: "I just had my first Diverticulitis attack and was told by my family to try GSE with Papaya pills."

Few months later I got diverticulitis cure by conventional medicine but within a month symptoms came back. I did not feel like going back through the medical stuff again. I put 15 drop mms with citric acid and drank. 2 hours later my colon drained itself and my toilet bowl looked and smelled like my septic tank. I was fine after. I don't think 1 drop would have cure me and gradually increasing the dose may have given the germs a chance to adapt to mms plus a heavy dose cause my colon to go into. Flush mode to rid itself of the irritating chemicals and drastically reducing the germs count. It worked."

[YEA] 01/17/2007: Mary from Honolulu: "About 10 years ago I got diverticulitis and peritonitis and was hospitalized for a week. My doctor told me that I would need an operation on my colon once I got healthier. My friend gave me some homemade noni juice to drink every morning and I took it for the 6 months after my hospital stay. When I went back to the doctor for a 6 month check up and to schedule the surgery, I no longer had any bad spots left on my colon. There was no reason to have surgery. My doctor put up the before and current xrays of my colon and asked me "What the heck did I do to cure myself like that!" I now make it myself and take it every morning."

WARNING ABOUT COLON CLEANSE

[NAY] 03/29/2008: Joyce from Glasgow, Scotland: "I digested Psyllium and Bentonite clay for a colon cleanse. This was to ruin my whole life and caused immediate gastritis and triggered rosacea/rhinophyma. The onset of syptoms were abrum, immediate and extremely severe. I now have blepharitis and meibominaitis as a result. I was very stupid and digesting this product has ruined my whole life. DO NOT TAKE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Replies06/05/2010: Drjohnathon from Helsinki, Finland replies: "It is more likely that Psyllium & Bentonite clay stired up your current condition of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) or even Demodex mites (parasites) both of which have been shown to cause Rosacea & Rhinophyma! Taking those 2 herbs WITHOUT combining them with an anti-parasite program or herbal "peristalsis" tonics will agravate diverticulitis in many people. Some people do have an allergy to these herbs but the allergy will subside after taking them. In your case it did not! As you claim they ruined your life? Did you self prescribe or did you consult a trained health professional? A Chinese herbal doctor can help with this problem! Both Rosacea & Rhinophyma are treatable with Diet changes & Chinese herbal medicine!"
10/24/2011: Jessaka from Tahlequah, Ok, U.s.a. replies: "I tried a lot of these remedies. As for the Grapeseed Extract, I read that it could cause problems, but my other thought is, if it kills bacteria, then it could kill all the good bacteria too. I could be wrong. What someone told me to do, as she had, is to take Paul D'Arco tea 3 cups a day and to take probiotics. I failed miserably on drinking the tea 3 times a day, but I took a lot of probiotics, and it helped. Then I had one small pain in my colon, and I didn't know what to do about that. It dawned on me that it could be gas, so I took some charcoal capsules, and it went away.
I am still drinking noni juice in case it can heal the pouch I have. But I also plan on buying some papaya tablets, but I am drinking the juice.
Personally, I think it was the probiotics that helped most."
11/17/2011: Carol from Okanogan, Wa replies: "I took used those for my ailments and saw a great improvement, don't give up. Taking pharma drugs have some many dangerous side effects."
04/10/2012: Brenda from Fort Worth, Texas replies: "Well I am on my third bout of diverticulitis and my friend found this site. We went out immediately and bought aloe Vera juice. Today I was totally miserable for hours then remembered. I have the aloe Vera juice. I drank down an ounce and I am telling you in seconds I started to feel better. That was at 10 :33. It is 10 50 and for the last 10 minutes I have felt so much better!!! Lord I hope this is real."
