i hope you get to see this email! I too have experienced severe depression after having both of my children. I have been dealing with this current bout for about a year 1/2 thats how old my second son is. I have tried a couple of meds and let me just say they made me WORSE!! I have slowly tapered off one med and now tapering off another I have been taking natural supplements and now trying the apple cider vineger and exercise. I feel alot better.

If you dont have motivation or energy and the meds arent helping please! Talk to your doctor about tapering off and find yourself a holistic doctor or counselor to help with your depression. No matter the cost its worth your life and your family to have their beautiful mommy back!! I believe in you and know that you are not alone. Take charge of your life. Get outside if you can take your daughter to the park, reach out to people in your community! If you have an iphone look up aps for depression every little thing you do will help. Breath and stretch!!! Much Love!

Jess"

08/27/2011: Sarah from Dallas, Tx replies: "To Debbie--I hope you read this. You have to keep trying to get well, and be there for your dear little daughter. I have been treated for depression since I was diagnosed about ten years ago. Mostly, I've gotten counseling, and lately am trying EMDR (google it). I did try a prescription once, and it made me feel SO much worse. It also caused me to have two car accidents, and then I went off it cold turkey. I keep searching and experimenting with things to get well. Here are the things which made a big difference for me: B vitamins, niacin (the flush-kind is fun to take at night when no one can see you--and I think it's great for your heart and brain), folic acid (most B vits don't have enough), coffee, zinc, fish oil gel caps, 200 mg daily of magnesium citrate, chlorella mixed with grapefruit seed extract in water, fresh cilantro (on salads or meat), grape seed capsules, N-Acetyl Cysteine (should be taken on an empty stomach, with vit C. It makes me sleepy, so I take it at night, with Magnesium and sleep like a rock), L-Carnitine (also on an empty stomach), and SAMe. The thing that made the hugest difference is SAMe. In studies, it has been shown to work better than prescription antidepressants. Search it on the internet if you are interested in trying it, as it is touchy stuff--should be taken on an empty stomach, is inactivated by heat, and must be taken with B6, B12, and folic acid, and should NOT be taken for bipolar type depression. SAMe totally gets rid of the panicky type of anxiety I wake up with, and also helps me get everything done that I need to, with normal energy (although I still need some naps). Also, if you are crying every day, I am thinking that the thing you need most is a counselor. I think you have some kind of grief that you need emotional help to deal with."

[YEA]  08/22/2006: Justin from Port St. Lucie writes: "I was under constant attack from anxiety, and depression was setting in because of it. I saw a therapist who taught me about positive thinking and ways to get myself out of a panic attack. It kinda worked but was a constant effort to always be managing my moods and still fighting random panic attacks. I started self medicating with a popular narcotic made to ease anxiety. We all know it as a small white rectangular pill. I became dependant and my tolerance built up way to high. I lost my job, and almost my wife and kid because of that stupid pill! I checked myself into a rehab ...mainly to get it out of my system while in a secure, stable environment. My mind was definitely set on getting that pill out of my life so it was easy to kick. When I got out I was so scared of my anxiety coming back...and it did! I then remembered someone telling me about B-12 and Folic Acid as a natural cure for anxiety. I went to the store found the vitamins and saw it was like $6 for a 3 months supply and said "what the heck, I'll try it".....2 years later only one ten minute panic attack! The one I did have was after a night of drinking and did not take my vitamins...so def. my own fault. I take 500mcgs of B-12 and 400 mcgs of Folic Acid twice a day (i'm a big guy) I rarely, very rarely even think of my anxiety.

I have also, overtime, added a supplement called 5-htp and always carry around Altoids. I take the 5-htp when it just feels like things aren't going my way, and within an hour I am as giddy as a 3yr old watching blues clues! The Altoids help me out just whenever, they give me my own personal break from everything. The freshness it gives just puts everything back on a balanced level. The extreme peppermint taste relaxes me. I pop one in before any stressful meeting, event, issue and it's like my own personal shield from stress!

As a side note since taking these new vitamins I have only been sick with a cold for one day out of 2 years! I have not gotten a single sore throat, flu, ear ache ...Everyone in my family can be sick and I get nothing! I feel invincible! Smiling more,"

[YEA]  01/13/2010: Bob from London, U.K. writes: "The Bach Flower Remedies have worked wonders on my depression. I have been in and out of depression for the last 3-4 years, and only a few months ago I discovered the flower remedies and was amazed by the results. I use them still, whenever I feel I need to. Deciding which remedies to take is not easy. It takes alot of looking into yourself and understanding yourself and your emotions. You need to think about what you feel at that specific time, not what you might have felt at previous phases in your life. I hope this helps."

I too am looking for a place where to buy sugar beet molasses. I have searched online and at some "fancy" grocery stores with no success. Does anybody have any ideas? Thank you so much!"

EC: Well, we've found beet sugar sold online but not beet molasses. Try googling "beet molasses" rather than "sugar beet molasses". It's possible that an international grocery store would carry it.

Here's a website for traders -- sorry, not much help, but it may give you some clues! http://buy.ecplaza.net/search/1s1nf20sell/beet_molasses.html

Additional info on Sugar Beet Molasses from Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molasses

"Sugar beet molasses

Molasses that comes from the sugar beet is different from cane molasses. Only the syrup left from the final crystallisation stage is called molasses; intermediate syrups are referred to as high green and low green and these are recycled within the crystallisation plant to maximise extraction. Beet molasses is about 50% sugar by dry weight, predominantly sucrose but also containing significant amounts of glucose and fructose. Beet molasses is limited in biotin (Vitamin H or B7) for cell growth, hence it may need to be supplemented with a biotin source. The non-sugar content includes many salts such as calcium, potassium, oxalate and chloride. These are either as a result of concentration from the original plant material or as a result of chemicals used in the processing. As such, it is unpalatable and is mainly used as an additive to animal feed (called "molassed sugar beet feed") or as a fermentation feedstock.

It is possible to extract additional sugar from beet molasses through a process known as molasses desugarisation. This technique exploits industrial scale chromatography to separate sucrose from non-sugar components. The technique is economically viable in trade protected areas where the price of sugar is supported above the world market price. As such it is practised in the US and parts of Europe."
In the cuisines of the Middle East, molasses is produced from several other materials: carob[1], grape[2], date[3], pomegranate[4], and mulberry[5].

03/23/2009: Brenda from Edmonton, Canada replies: "I have been surching a lot on where to find Sugar Beet Mollasses. Still have not found anything....I do have a suspicion, if one goes into their local Chinatown supermarket, and say In Mandarin or Cantonese for Sugar Beet Mollasses they just may find it!!
Perhaps someone Asian on your staff or board will attempt this..

12/30/2009: Nirinjan from Traverse City, Michigan replies: "I would recommend using Molasses from cane sugar and not beets. Most sugar beets are GMO and could have other side effects or make sure it's organic grown."

Sometimes, I just cannot move or do anything! I ate a tablespoon and managed not to gag from the texture or lack of taste. Within a HALF-HOUR, I went from not wanting to be around and lethargic to INSTANT ENERGY! I was doing chores, showering, moving about and realizing that the Coconut Oil helped me start my day. It felt like I drank two cups of coffee! Throughout the day, my heart was beating pretty heavy so I will try taking half a tablespoon in the upcoming days. This is a WONDER FOOD!"

WARNING!

[YEA]  08/02/2009: Shannon from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada writes: "I recently started taking alternating hot/cold showers. I start off quite warm then gradually make it as hot as I can for about 3 minutes then switch to cold for about 1 minute. I do 3 cycles and gradually make the hot hotter and the cold colder each cycle. I've only been doing this for 2 weeks now but the chronic headaches I've had for 30 years have lessoned (only 1 in the last 10 days-absolute heaven) and I've mysteriosly lost 8 lbs. (I'm quite obese) without changing my eating habits. The fact that it has been stinking hot the past 2 weeks and I'm sweating to death with no air conditioning could also be a factor for the weight loss! LOL My body temperature stays cooler for a few hours after my shower, even in this 30+ weather. I've also been doing some awesome meditations, listening to binaural beats and watching subliminal videos so it could be a combination of everything.

When I went to my Dr. last week and he asked how I was, I told him he'd better sit down. I've suffered (and I do mean suffer-suicidal thoughts daily) chronic depression for the last 17 years. I've gone off meds 3 times - once for 4 years even- but always end up crashing and need to go back on. Anyways back to the Dr. appt... I told him I had been HAPPY!!!! for 7 whole days and I hadn't cried since Sunday. The reason I cried was because I didn't know how long this would last. Had a bum day yesterday but not too bad today.

I thought it could be the combination of all the above or just my meds kicking in after trying 3 different kinds in 2 months. Not until I read all these posts did I think my showers could actually being contributing to my emotional well-being. Being 45, back in college with a bunch of 20 year olds, dealing with my disrespectful, pot smoking 17 year old son, chronic headaches and migraines, depression, hormone hostage (peri-menapause)... well I can use all the help I can get. I've also developed tennis elbow from being on the computer most of the day for school and homework. The showers haven't helped with that yet so I'm going to try emmursing my arm between my 2 kitchen sinks in hot and cold water.

Thanks for reading and I will definitely be checking out more of this website and referring my friends to it."

[YEA]  06/04/2011: Memphismiss from Memphis, Tn, United States replies: "I think the cold shower has helped with my depression. Before I took the shower I had that feeling of poor concentration and tiredness and a bit of confusion. After the shower I feel better and can think better and im more energized. Before I took the shower I took an Omega 3 pill and bit it and squeezed the oil into my mouth. I also ate a banana and drank some lemon water to wash it all down. While in the shower I did let the water cover my entire head and body and I couldn't help but to began really deep breathing because of the shock of the cold water(I think the deep breathing helped).

I have been dealing with depression on and off for about 7 years. I think it is very possible that I was depressed as a child too. It became a part of my personality, I was always negative. I would always expect the worse. I have been working to be more positive and it has helped the depression some. Recently I have been under a lot of stress and as you may know stress can bring on depression. So I am trying to avoid a major depressive episode at all costs as they are very scary. I have had scary major depressive episodes but I find that meditating on the Holy Bible and positives rather than negatives helps.

I am going to try my hardest to exercise because when I do exercise(dancing is my favorite) I do feel better. Also when I juice fresh apples, oranges, carrots, and grapes, I have better concentration and energy. I noticed this week I have been eating poorly all the sweets and fats I wanted and my body has suffered for it, no doubt. That's why I was here looking for other cures to try to get rid of this depression once and for all but I guess it's gonna take some time and effort as it took some time and effort to get depressed. But the cold shower sure does help also freshly juiced fruits and vegatables also, positive meditation (I prefer those of the Holy Bible).... exercise(dancing, swimming and walking)..Omega 3 and vitamins, active social life(volunteer, facebook or something... be mindful of what you are watching or listening to( you need all positive stuff nothing negative).

Since there are so many things that can be going on in a person's body to cause depression it may take trying a few things. Our bodies were not built to withstand the current fast food lifestyle of today or the high stress. It is important to make sure that your depression is not because your body is short on vitamin and minerals Think about your eating habits even if you are not super obese like me. Blessings of all things good and no depression to all, you are not alone. HALLELUJAH... in Christ Jesus' name I pray, Amen."

[YEA]  12/31/2008: Jeff from Houston, Texas writes: "Cold Shower Therapy for Depression:

I didn't initially read about cold shower therapy for depression here, but wanted to comment on the positive benefits and why scientists think it works.

I've suffered from treatment resistant or refractory depression since the age of sixteen and am now forty-one years old. I've tried over 50 medications (MAOI's are the best in my personal and medical option), had over 70 ECT (electronvulsive or shock therapy treatments at the age of 18/19), and have tried every other known treatment for depression in the history of mankind.

Cold showers (or baths, swimming in lakes) has been a complimentary or adjunct therapy for me over the past several years. Scientist think it stimulates the blue spot or locus cerulus in the brain which is the main source of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (noradrenaline), but it also stimulates endorphins and has other effects on the hypothalamus/pituitary like stimulating thyroid hormone, helping with hot flashes (I have them with depression) and helps normalize circadian rhythms. I believe it works wonders and am living proof.

I also want to add something else for those who suffer from depression that they might want to try. Sleep deprivation for one or two nights. You might think it would cause depression, but it stimulates most of the neurotransmitters in the brain and is useful for enhancing the antidepressant effect of medications.

Lastly, if one is not so depressed that they're bed ridden, exercise can work wonders."

[YEA]  10/20/2008: Sarah from Nailworth, Glos UK writes: "I have been an avid reader of your site since i found it. I use many of your suggestions such as acv, bsm and baking soda for a cleanser. I heard about cold showers and depression and decided to give it a try. The main reason i tried it was because one day i was with a friend and we do wind each other up a bit and hurl joking insults at each other, but this one day i got really down about some of his comments as i suffer from depression and menopause i was feeling very vunerable. I could not get over his jokes and as much as i tried to reasure myself that he did not really mean them they still hurt and i was in tears for days. I thought i would take a cold shower to see if it cheered me up. All i can say is WOW. I must admit although i had lost the will to live i honestly thought i was going to die in the shower and decided i am not only depressed i am bloody bonkers, i was convinced i was going to die from heart failure, shock and hypothermia all at the same time. But after i stopped shivering and my teeth stopped chuttering i realised i was going to live after all and actually started to enjoy it. That was only this morning and i have been in such a good mood all day i cant wait to try it again tommorow. My face has also been glowing all day without any make up and i cant stop looking in the mirror, maybe it's just because i feel better but it has took years off me.I have got curly hair and heard it is good for curly hair as mine is going a bit frizzy. I will give you an update in a couple of months to see if it helps . I am one of the few women who love my curly hair and would not touch a straigtener. Everybody comments on my hair and how nice it is but lately with the onset of the menopause it seems to have died so i would love to see if something this simple gets it back to normal."

[WARNING!]  09/22/2007: Remy from Buffalo, NY writes: "Please tell website users that they have to be very careful if they have low body weight and use the "cold shower" method to alleviate depression. I have low blood circulation and several health problems because I am suffering and loosing to an eating disorder. Cold showers can be dangerous!

For people who are "underweight" it may be a good idea by slowly decreasing the temp. each time you take a shower, followed by taking your temperature afterward.

Core Temp. Side Effect
95 Shivering
90 Confusion
85 Lethargic
80 Coma
78 Death

Measuring the length of the shower is important, as the longer you expose your self to cold water, the lower your body temperature will drop.

I hope this helps, and as always; if you think you may have an eating disorder, you may have one, or develop one!"

I feel a lot better, and motivated, which is rare for me especially in the morning. I'll keep it up and see what else happens, but I definitely recommend trying it, for whatever reason. And Thank You for this great website!"

I only recently started taking cold showers, and I wish I had started years ago. I had been taking Prozac and other anti-depressant medications for eleven years and desperately wanted to get off them, but the withdrawal symptoms would hit like a nightmare. The cold showers have enabled me to get off these drugs cold turkey. I keep the water ice cold for at least five minutes, then switch to warm and finally hot. I aso discovered that targeting the armpits is absolutely essential."

At first I dreaded the idea but have since found that tepid showers invigorate my spirit and lighten my mood. I'm bipolar and have crushing depressive episodes. Believe me when I say that I feel my cold showers mitigate the effects of my dark moods and project a feeling of well being and joy throughout my whole body and mind!"

COUCH EXERCISE

[YEA]  05/08/2008: Gary from Mesa, AZ writes: "Dear Earth Clinic, I may have some good advice on how to drastically cut or eliminate depression/anxiety. An exercise. I lay over the edge of the couch face down with my lower stomach on the arm. Keeping my legs straight on the couch I lean down with my torso and back up straight. This works the back muscles and takes pressure off the spine and nerves. Also, a simple visit to the chiropractor helped tremendously. Thanks, Gary."

05/09/2008: Gary replies: "You would lie on the arm of sofa with your stomach. Legs on couch and head off. Use your arms like a pushup to help straighten your body. Your legs may want to raise up but you`ll have to secure them somehow.

In the exercise, I use my arms to help me straighten myself almost like a push up. Most people will not be able to do it without using their arms. I guess whats important is to use back muscles without straining them of course. Also, I just want to tell people with depression to go to a chiropractor, therapist or qualified trainer. This gets dismissed because they don`t have back pain. Spend $30 It could be the answer. It`s well worth it. Hope this helps."

DANCING

[YEA]  06/05/2008: Gloria from Santa Rosa, CA writes: "I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety 6 years ago and i tried the meds for a while, but i hated the side-effects.

I had always wanted to take dance classes so in college i took a class for p.e. credit. It was extraordinary how much dancing affected me physically, mentally, and emotionally. I got into better shape while being challenged to learn steps and movement and when i danced, i felt so happy like i could fly!

Since then, I haven't had any need to see a therapist or take meds and I've now changed my major to became a movement therpist (who knew there was a whole field dedicated to what I had experienced). I hope to inspire others to make that connection with their body and mind and I will continue to pursue this awareness for the rest of my life.

Here's a tip for those of you interested in trying this. Most community colleges have beginning adult dance classes and it's usually really cheap (in california it's $20 a unit and dance classes are normally only 1 unit)."

DANCING is a whole lot more fun and safer than popping antidepressants (which I have read are mostly fuorides, which is another excitotoxin or neurotoxin). The only adverse side effect I ever heard of from dancing was, my physical therapist, telling me that one of his male patients said his knee went out on him while he was dancing - Must have been "break" dancing, huh?"
