[QUESTION]  11/05/2009: Aggieized from Clovis, Nm writes: "I was wondering if anyone has tried this remedy on infants. My 8mo old is falling off the growth charts and we're looking into causes for his low growth. One thing is that he's had reflux from birth, and at about 3 mo he started taking Zantac. I'm not convinced it's done anything for him, and recently heard of this cure for reflux. Our pediatrician was curious too when I told her about this, but just said she didn't know anything about this cure, and said she's never heard of vinegar being harmful to babies.

Has anyone out there tried this with their babies or children? Any luck?

Even though my son is falling off the growth curve, his developmental abilities are right on track, and even ahead of his age in some areas.

Thanks for your help.

Julia"

EC: Hi Julia. You didn't specify which type of vinegar, so we 're guessing you mean apple cider vinegar (acv), the most popular remedy for acid reflux.

11/06/2009: Gean from Salina, Ks replies: "My friend's baby had very bad acid reflux. She was breastfeeding. They finally figured out the baby was gluten intolerant, so when the mother stopped eating wheat, the problem stopped. The child had to continue off wheat for a few years. She took juice plus for a few months at age 2 or 3. At about age three she could tolerate some spelt, and now she eats everything (she's 5)."

[QUESTION]  06/05/2009: DeeAm from Islamabad, Pakistan writes: "Hello!

I am a 30 year old mother. My baby is 7 months old and I also feed her. I used to have an amazing skin earlier when i was in my early 20's but now its dull and have black spots. I have tried using different products but nothing works for me. I have visible pores but i try not using soap because i have found that it makes skin more sensitive. i have also gained tremendous weight after i got married. I am Asian.

I would like to know if i can take ACV as i am feeding baby for weight loss as i read on this site...also what is the best quantity of baking soda that i can use on the skin in form of scrub as i have sensitive skin.

Waiting for a reply..."

06/07/2009: Ann from Brooklyn, NY replies: "Hello DeeAM, In regards to your question about breast feeding and wanting to try ACV with baking soda. My answer to you is that you should not try to diet while breast feeding. You will deprive yourselve of nutrients and also your baby who needs all the nutrients from you. If your are breast feeding every three hours the pounds should fall off naturally. Unless, you have an underlying problem; you should consider checking with your doctor and having your thyroids checked. Also in regards to dark spots on your skin, that's from the pregnancy (hormones) and it will fade slowly. You can use cocoa butter oil or cream all over the body 2x a day. Also use an astringent such as witch hazel or a toner to minimize pore size after cleansing the face. Good luck."

06/23/2009: Monsoon from Pune, India replies: "Hi DeeAm,

Please do not take the ACV while you are feeding your baby. It has worked wonders for me, but i read somwhere on this site itself that the milk production stopped for a lady who took ACV. Your skin can wait until you need to feed your baby or you can look for other external remedies until you can revert to ACV. ACV is the best for sure but it can wait. Take care"

07/22/2009: Laura from Orlando, FL replies: "I am nursing my 8 week old baby and taking ACV with no problems. I took it when I nursed my two year old also, and nursed him for 15 months with ease. I don't take it every day, though, and especially not for weight loss (don't try to lose weight while nursing or you may lose vital nutrients for yourself and baby). I use it if I feel a cold coming on or I need an extra energy boost. I put one tablespoon in a mug of hot water and add some local honey to taste (usually about one tablespoon). I usually limit myself to one ACV drink a day. Also, try ___, ____coconut oil on your skin...it works wonders for mine!"

08/12/2009: Amd from Rawalpindi, Pakistan replies: "Hello Everyone!

The place i come from has problem with water as it is hard water. My hair and skin are now in terrible condition. I also have a daughter who is 9 months old. I wanted to know if ACV and baking sida can be of some help or is there any other natural product that i can use for myself and later for my daughter too to make our hair and skin better?

I tried taking ACV but it dint suit me. Got yeast infection and i read it online that one of the side effects of Apple cidar vinegar is yeast infection. I am also feeding my daughter so i stopped taking it.

Is there any other way i can take Apple cidar Vinegar once i stop feeding my daughter?

take care"

01/04/2009: Tahalia from Brooklyn, New York writes: "My 4 yr.old daughter has a yeast infection not on the inside of her vagina but on the outside . She has had it for a month and I've been using nystain and lotrimin antifungal but its still here. Right now I am trying the apple cider vinegar 1 cup and 1/4 of salt in her bath water. I need some help. Someone please respond."

01/05/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn. replies: "Hi Tahalia, If it's fungal infection, baking soda solution should kill it and should not harm your 4 year old daughter. Just apply it to the rash about 4 times a day. It might also be wise to cut down on her eating or drinking sweets."

02/03/2009: Maggie from Miami, Florida replies: "Re: Fungul Infection on 4-month old baby. Try "Tea Tree & E Antiseptic Creme" to use topically. It's very soothing and antifungul. It helps tremendously. Only found in Health Food Stores. Also try giving her Acidophilus."

04/03/2009: Liz from Plant City, Fl. replies: "Hi,Tahalia from Brooklyn try giving her yogurt, any kind. eat it 2 or 3 times and put it on her bottom, that will help her. and put corn stach on her bottom too watch your washing soap, corn starch it the best after the yogurt for 1 or 2days hope it helps her. anything that has salt in it it hurts and burns."

07/04/2009: Michelle from Tracy, CA replies: "I delt with thrush and yeast rashes with both of my babies. I found the best thing to use was gentian violet. It was the only remidy that consistantly worked. The prescriptions and OTC's never even put a dent in clearing the problem yet, with gentian violet we saw results immediatly."

09/27/2009: Azg from Toronto, On replies: "I breastfed my son until he was 16 months old and we encountered thrush twice. The second time it actually gave him a diaper rash of yeast! My naturopath gave me a special blend of Acidophilus from the refridgerated section. It's a loose powder and I would cover my nipple in it before AND after breastfeeding. Before ensured he would get a dose of it into his mouth and after to ensure he didn't give the yeast back to me, and create a vicious cycle of cross contamination. I also dusted his bum with it at diaper changes. I am not exxagarating when I tell you he was cured of all symptoms of thrush within 2 days.

To encourage both our healing, I let him stay out of a diaper for a good 20 or 30 minutes at each diaper change ( the air helps dry and heal the yeast). I also avoided all processed sugar foods for myself as to starve the yeasties living in my body.

Good luck to you! Most health food stores have naturopaths or naturopathic students on staff. Please take their advice more seriously than any doctor's!!! Don't put scary chemicals/medicines into your tiny babies!"

[SIDE EFFECTS]  12/30/2008: Mischa from Plainfield, Illinois/USA writes: "Child GERD and Sinus symptoms: I am hoping to find the dosage of ACV that can help my 7 year old son with GERD (Acid reflux), constipation, and resulting sinus symptoms. We started the ACV with an adjustment of 1 1/2 teaspoons of acv to 1 tsp of raw locally grown honey and 8 oz of distilled water. Although the GERD and constipation symptoms reduced he now has quite a bit of congestion in his nasal cavity. His eyes are not swollen but very watery and has dark circles starting under eye. He complains of headache and has bad breath especially upon waking. His nose is draining but I've had to do a lot of sinus massage to get the process going. I've taken him to the pediatrician for the past month and he keeps getting more and more presciptions which aggravate other things.

Is there anything else I can do to ease his discomfort and help relieve his sinus pressure?"

12/31/2008: Rosy from Orlando, Fl replies: "Try using an oil diffuser with water and eucalyptus oil in his room as he falls asleep. I know when I have a stuffy nose this helps with the morning congestion."

01/03/2009: Dave from Brandon, MB, Canada replies: "Try Colloidal Silver it should help the sinus."

12/09/2008: Liz from Midland, TX writes: "I have a 7 month old who has been battling excessive spitting up since about birth. I figured he would grow out of it but he has not. He is pretty small for his age but developing very well. I give him a homemade formula because of my inability to produce enough breastmilk. (He was breastfed the first 4 months of his life.) I also give him organic baby foods which consist strictly of fruits and veggies. Here is the recipe for his formula:

12oz. spring water
6oz. goats milk
1/4 tsp. childrens probiotic powder
1/4 tsp. acerola cerry powder(17% vitC)
1 tsp. whey protein concentrate
1 tsp. nutritional yeast
1 1/2 capsules of colostrum
4 tblsp. mineral whey powder (Goatine)
1/2 tsp. cod liver oil
1/2 tsp. sunflower oil
1/2 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp. extra virgin coconut oil

I really don't feel like it is the formula that is causing this because he had this problem before the formula (I could be wrong). My question is: will giving him the apple cider vinegar help a baby this young and how should I give it to him if so? (bottle? & what volume) Are there any other recommendations you may have. Thank you for your time and help."

05/21/2009: Sandi from Oneida, TN replies: "If you don't want to try to feed it to him, which could prove difficult at any age, try applying the apple cider vinegar to the bottom of the feet with a cotton ball. The vinegar will absorb through the skin and should help calm the stomach. It is also good for diarhea. It dries in about a minute or two. I use this whenever my family gets sick. I have used it for food poisoning, flu, gastric overingulgence. It has worked wonders. Try it and see how it works."

[YEA]  11/18/2008: Emily from Charlotte, NC writes: "I nanny for infant twins who had terrible cradle cap. We began using a cotton ball to apply undiluted organic apple cider vinegar to their heads twice on bath day only, which is twice a week for them. To my knowledge, this was just to control the smell. Within a week or so, the cradle cap had drastically improved and after 2 weeks, was completely gone. We continue the application to ensure that it doesn't come back. I'm a believer and now am looking into remedies for myself!"

11/17/2008: Stacie from NY, NY writes: "my 1 year old daughter was diagnosed with perioral dermatitis. she was prescribed metronidazole cream 1%. i have yet to use it because of all the negative reviews...ie, may work while you're using it, but then when you stop the cream the rash comes back. not to mention, it's an antiobiotic cream and i don't want her to absorb that. so, i'm trying other steps first. i've been using vaseline as a barrier and bach's rescue remedy cream. it seems to be maintaining at the same level. not worse, not better. she sucks on her blankie at night and definitely is drooley on herself during the day. i try to blot the wetness and reapply creams all day long. can i use apple cider vinegar on a 1 year old? should i dilute it for her? a friend suggested mixing neosporin and vaseline to see if that had any effect. ever heard of that?"

He liked to pour the powder into the water and one day he poured a small amount on the ledge of the tub. He put his finger in it and said yum! It became a daily routine for now 3 weeks and his wart on his tongue in totally gone. Now that H1N1 is rappant, our entire family is now drinking baking soda. We are believers!"

[YEA]  05/06/2009: Jess from Columbus, OH writes: "My 22 month old was diagnosed as being anemic because of low iron count last month his iron count was 10pts the average is 12pts or higher. We had already been giving him high iron food and a vitamin with iron in it and nothing would bring the count up. The pediatrician gave us an iron drop supplement to give him, i didnt feel comfortable giving it to him because of all the side effects. Someone told me to try black strap molasses because it was high in iron. So i gave it a try and in 3 weeks his iron count went from 10pts to 14pts!!! We just gave it to him in his soymilk bottle."

CAVITIES

1 QUESTION

[QUESTION]  01/23/2009: Jsingh from Mon, Canada writes: "Would appreciate if you could provide any help on this post. My son who is turning seven soon has had cavities fro some time. The cavities have seem to gone out of control as some of his teeth have degenerated also. We went to see a dentist and they are talking about extraction of some teeth and also about filling in some. I was quite discouraged as we have always watched on his health. We have not used flouride toothpastes and haven't given him a lot of sugar. However for around a month now I have incorporated Xylitol as a sugar substitute in his milk and he also chews xylitol chewing gum. In addition I have introduced Butter oil(clarified butter) along with multi Vitamin in his diet. He has also been introduced to consuming eggs and his intake of milk also increased, another thing I have added in his diet is wheat germ. These dietary changes were incorporated after reading Nutrition and Physical degeneration by Dr Weston Price.

In addition I have him use Tooth soap for cleaning, followed by tooth swish of himalayan crystal salts which has remineralizing capabilities I guess, in addition also have him swish for a minute diluted oregano oil which definitely seems to have improve his breath and some bleeding that he had from gums once in a while. This regime is followed in the morning and before going to bed.

I was looking for some guidance on this as I really do not want him to go thru this extraction, filling etc invasive Procedures at such a young age. The dentist that we saw today also wante to put him on antibiotic 4 times a day.

Please let me know your thoughts on this, Thanks in advance for your reply.

Best,
Jagjeet"

01/24/2009: M from Oz, KS replies: "Maybe wild oregano oil found at vitacost found on the internet may help, you can also read what others have to say about certain products.

Here's a web site for information about oregano oil and cavities:
http://www.squidoo.com/stoptoothrot

you may want to read the book:
The Cure Is in the Cupboard: How to Use Wild Oregano for Better Health by Cass Ingram found at:
amazon.com.

Colostrum may help too.

WISHING YOUR SON WELL!"

01/26/2009: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Jagjeet:

The most common problems about multiple cavities indicates usually a molybdenum deficiency (protects against cavities and helps remineralization, without the toxicity of fluoride), a potassium is lacking in the diet, and the pH of the mouth is constantly acid. It is rare that a child has a bad breath problem. A xylitol is not a xylitol if they added aspartame which may make the conditions much worse. I often buy a pure powdered xylitol 1/4 teaspoon for something to keep around the mouth for awhile to kill off the bacteia. The natural terrain in the mouth has to be ALKALINE is the single most important factor. A constipation can give rise to acidity which causes the mouth to be acid. However, certain bacteria also grows faster if the body lacks magnesium. Therefore assuming an adult requiring 1/4 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate and 1/4 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate (or tripotassium citrate) in 1/2 glass of water, a child half the weight of a small adult of 100 pounds, will require 1/2 of the dose. This should naturally raise the pH of the mouth discourabng the bacteria. Since an adult requires 500 mg of magnesium citrate, a dose 1/2 based on 1/2 weight of an adult may require about 250 mg or perhaps 100 mg depending on weight with plenty of water should discourage most of the cavities. Since one of the indicators of a molybdenum deficiency is nightblindness or difficult to see in the dark but also the fact that molybdenum is an anticavity supplements I usually may take say 5-25 mg of molybdenum. In commercial molybdenum supplements the dose are smaller therefore it's usually is taken whatever amount they give us to prevent a deficiency and may help reduce cavity from a molybdenum deficiency which may initiate a cavities.

Ted"

03/15/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello Jsingh,

You said you aren't giving that seven year old much sugar, but is a good part of that sugar in carbonated beverages? If so, all carbonated beverages are acid and the acid eats into the enamel on the teeth causing cavities. They are said to be more harmful to the teeth than a candy bar, but omitting or at least limiting both is a good idea.

Some dental problems are started by the habit of letting an infant or toddler go to bed with a bottle of milk. Matter of fact, the medical field tagged tooth decay from this problem as "milk teeth" in discussions of it."

03/15/2009: Jagjeet from Montreal, QC replies: "Thanks Ted and Joyce for your feedback and also M above.

However there has been very less carbonated sweetened drinks also in his diet, we rarely do have them at home. So really haven't been able to pinpoint the problem...

Best,
Jagjeet"

04/15/2009: Pat from London, UK replies: "My daughter had the same problems with her teeth, she used to drink a lot of (dilluted) apple juice when she was younger. The enamal just dissolves!! Apple juice sounds healthy but watch out for the sugars.. opt for water...."

05/25/2009: Kaylin from Hampton, IL replies: "My son used to have terrible teeth. I say USED TO because we have had marvelous success! When my son was 6 1/2 our regular dentist sent us to a pediatric dentist to have a couple of cavities filled. The pediatric dentist decided to put in 2 crowns because the structure of the teeth was so terrible. Yikes! Crowns at 6! Shortly after that I stopped buying breakfast cereal because it was killing our budget. Keep in mind, I NEVER bought "sugary" cereal. It was always organic, low-sugar "healthy" cereal. I have always been health-conscious and limited the sugar my children ate, which is why it was so discouraging for my son to have such horrible teeth.

At my son's next appointment (6 months after I started feeding him eggs for breakfast instead of cereal) our dentist sent us back to the pediatric dentist to get another small cavity filled. The pediatric dentist decided not to fill the cavity because it was so small and my son's oral hygiene was so much better. (I do NOT believe that this was due to better brushing. His brushing habits have not changed).

Shortly after that I read Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, which is the cookbook based on Weston A. Price's research. I started feeding my children raw milk from grass-fed cows, farm eggs, homemade bread (with delayed-fermentation techniques), honey, etc. At my son's next 6-month dentist appointment I asked the dentist how the cavity was. The dentist said THERE WAS NO CAVITY. IT WAS GONE AND THE TOOTH WAS COMPLETELY HARD!!!!!! I have never heard of a cavity healing, but my son's did! The news made my whole year!

Keep following the Weston A. Price-type recommendations and you're sure to find improvement.

Also, relating to the recommendation above about keeping the body alkaline, Kombucha is very alkalinizing. I make it at home as it is way too expensive to buy. My children absolutely love it. They think it tastes like pop, but of course it's completely healthy."

06/10/2009: Rene from Houston, Texas replies: "Kaylin, thanks for posting your experience! I've heard of cavities filling back in - my daughter has 2 cavities and I don't want to have them filled. Every other part of our body can heal itself given the right nutrition and environment, why not our teeth? I've just read an article written by a dentist that linked homogenized milk to cavities.

Cod liver oil is reported to help cavities heal, and I know having a mineral supplement can help with re-mineralization of teeth. I've also been reading that oil pulling helps cavities heal."

08/03/2009: Sasha from Sav, Jamaica replies: "this is for Jsingh; buy a bottle of castor oil and let your son swish around one cork for about 10-15 mins each days. within a week or two you will start to notice the improvements in his teeth."

08/04/2009: Alain from Ottawa, Canada replies: "Answer for Jsingh from Mon, Canada about child cavities.

Try to find pH paper to confirm that your child's saliva is acidic. Then the solution is to alkalize. Read Ted's post there http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/children_and_infants.html . Also search for Acid/Alkaline balance in the web. The less process food the better. A lot of vegetables is good.

Also, a way to alkalize the mouth is to swish or gargle with Milk of Magnesia (MOM). Try to find the "original" type, as the new ones have more chemicals added.

Good Luck

Alain"

CHILDREN'S DOSAGES

08/26/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn writes: "

Children/Animal dosages:
Per Dr. Richard Schulze
His preference is by child or animal's weight rather than age. He says just put child's or animal's wt. in pounds over l50 pounds:
child's wt. 30 lbs Child's dose is 1/5 of the adult dose.
adult's wt. l50 lbs.
Thus a l0 lb'ers dose would be l/15 adult dose
A l500 lb. horse would get l0 times the adult dose.
He also suggests putting herbal remedies 50/50 with maple syrup to get most kids to take them.

COLDS AND FLU

1 QUESTION

[QUESTION]  10/18/2009: Atlantis from Spokane, Wa, USA writes: "My son is 13 months old. His mother was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with a sinus infection. She then developed a pretty nasty cough. 3 weeks later, still the same. Then I get sick. I have the same cough, headaches and sinus pain and fever. Mom gets all these symptoms as well, plus sore throat and red spots on the throat, swollen glands. The doctor tells us he thinks we have the flu. The next day our son gets a cough and then a fever.

We are first time parents and I have never been too hip to American medicine. I just found this site today and I am super excited!! I am excited to do the H2O2 remedies and Apple cider vinegar...and prob a bunch of others.

Bottom line is my son has been sleeping and running a high fever.... Doctors pretty much tell us we have to wait it out... I think mom is going to have an anxiety attack worrying about our little boy.

There is a lot of good information on here for flu symptoms but nothing is specific for babies.........

I am in need of some specific things to do for a 13 month old.

Thank you so very much!!!!"

10/19/2009: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, usa replies: "I know being a first time parent can be an anxious time. You mention that you have never been too hip on American medicine so I'm not sure if you are perhaps, European. If so, you are maybe familiar with Rudolf Steiner who founded anthroposophy. He has many wonderful and gentle treatments for young children (adults, too but you specifically asked for a young child) that I used when my kids were very young. One of the companies is called Weleda so you may even be familiar with it since it is in all health food/natural stores. If you google Steiner medicine or anthroposophical medicine, you will find lots of help. I know it helped ease my anxiety as a young mom.

Speaking of anxiety, you may also want to consider Bach flower remedies. Rescue remedy is a powerful remedy and we always keep it on hand in our home. If you are not familiar with them then google them and learn about them because they are gentle but effective.

Also, if you do like alternative ways you can have a look at Mothering magazine which was started back in the mid 70's. I found it very comforting and helpful throughout my older kids baby/ toddler/ youth years. I learned so much from that magazine and often it was a jumping point to learn more on a subject. It helped me make some big decisions as well that didn't necessarily fit into mainstream American mindset i.e., family bed, vaccinations, homeschool, etc. Of course, back in the early 80's a lot of these ideas were just being pioneered here in the US. Now, at least there are more people open to these ideas. Anyway, I hope this info can help ease the two of you. Lisa"

10/19/2009: Atlantis from Spokane, Wa, USA replies: "Hey! Thanks for the response. The info looks great. Steiner looks interesting. I googled him along with anthroposophical medicine. A lot of information but I could not find any remedies for babies.

I do use Bach products and yes, they are incredible! My mom gave me a Bach bottle 7 years ago for anxiety. Its great!

If you know of a site or some actual remedies to do for my son that would be great!

Thank you very much!"

CONSTIPATION

10/02/2009: Rachel from Anna, Tx, USA writes: "Help with baby constipation

Please help- I have a nine month old girl at home with a chronic constipation problem for the last 6 months. If I let her go on her own she may have a BM once or twice a week and they are very painful for her to pass and very large. The doctors are not much help and I've done everything they have suggested with little change and even that only temporary.

I have tried the following: baby laxative consisting of magnesium citrate, changing formulas (from Enfamil lipil to Enfamil gentle ease-helped for about 3 weeks, earths best organic, and a couple of others), raw milk from Jersey cows, omega 3 supplement, probiotic, fresh fruit including peaches, pears, apples, apple juice, pears juice at least 4-5 oz a day which worked for 2 days then stopped working I stopped giving it to her because I feel that is too much juice, fresh blended spinach, Epsom salt baths, massage with almond oil and lavender essential oil, q-tip with Vaseline,
thermometer with Vaseline both inserted to stimulate a movement, steamed broccoli, raw garlic, dark corn syrup, concord grape juice diluted, aloe vera juice and now against what I believe to be nutritious soy formula. I give her liquid suppositories to make her go but she is now holding her BM in because it is so painful for her. I am trying enemas to help but she tenses up before I can insert them and I don't want to hurt her. Please if anyone knows of something I have missed please tell me.

I don't know what else to do for her. She's had an X-Ray which came back normal- nothing keeping her from having a BM. Also she only began having this problem when I began supplementing her with formula when I wasn't producing enough milk. While she was on breast milk she had no issues. But when I went back to work I slowly lost my supply and since then she has had this problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated."

10/03/2009: Merryanne from Orange City, Florida, USA replies: "To Rachel with the constpated baby: Read the material in EC about magnesium, and you will have to get the baby to drink more fluids, and fruit for fiber, or make your on nutrious smothie and use the flavors the baby likes...I hope this helps. Merryanne"

10/03/2009: Tricia from Ireland replies: "I first noticed my newborns poop problems in hospital but the nurse told me that she was having a reaction to the baby wipes we were using and to use cotton wool and water. Oh, foolish me. I went home thinking she would be fine. Anyway the problems got worse (is every new mother REALLY that apprehensive as they kept telling us?). All we got was a prescription for permanent laxatives. Eventually a very kind doctor rightly guessed that her back passage was slightly too small for her body. There is no way of testing to prove if he is actually right. This may not be the reason for your child's constipation but his advice at the time was to give her prune juice. Now she was only 10/12 weeks old at this stage so we had to water it down to 1 oz prune juice to 3 oz water and she had to take this in 1 oz lots in between her bottles (my milk didn't kick in). Her feed also has to be changed to a softer formula with pre-biotics added. We learned the hard way that we should have started this early in the morning rather than at night. We walked the floors with her for 12 hours. It took 3 days to work and the first day of pooping was pure liquid and projectile. Oh, and also foul smelling.

By the time she was your baby's age, we administered the prunejuice in 4 oz lots 2 times per day still watered down so that it is only 2 oz of prune juice and there was a BM every day. If we missed one it didn't matter. If we were away and missed 2 it did. When solids were introduced we had to wait longer to introduce proteins and starches. Her diet was mainly fruit and vegetable, no potatoes or rice or meat till much later thn the norm.

We also kept her on her bottles to guarantee her intake of liquids for longer than usual. We had no problems with toilet training.

At the ripe old age of four she has now started school and because the teachers don't check to see if they eating and drinking their lunches and breaks, we are having a few problems again but at least she is old enough to tell us what is happening her or when the pain is building up so that we can do somthing about it.

My main problems with the prune juice were personal. In a babies bottle it looks like coca cola. People would take the bottle away from me and throw it in the bin before I could explain. They were usually interfering busybodies who loved their own voices so much I couldn't get a word in edgeways. Having to get that extra liquid into her made her less hungry so getting enough solids into her to keep her asleep all night took extra time. And travelling abroad we would have to make up extra to drink in front of security at the airports and make sure that we could get the brand that worked for her wherever we were going or bring loads of it with us.

You have my sympathies. Yor post has brought back all my feelings of frustration and I am even shaking as I type this."

10/04/2009: Rachel from Anna, Tx, USA replies: "To Merryanne and Tricia- Thank you so much for such a quick response and support. I have tried the magnesium citrate and it didnt work. I cant imagine why it didnt. And giving her prune juice didnt either but prune baby food works occasionally if I give her a warm bath right afterward. Which is why I tried so many other things, I also give her water daily. I wondered if she had a milk allergy but the soy milk had no effect on her either. I recently started giving her flaxseed oil in with her milk and this seems to be working, at least for now. Most of what I have tried has come from this site so I thank you EC for having such a wonderful site with so much great information. I am always here looking for natural remedies for all of my family."

10/06/2009: Merryanne from Orange City, Fl replies: "To Rachel,,, Good luck with the constipation problem,,keep trying different things, different foods, juices, high fiber,,low fiber. But good hydration is essential, and exercise is important, or massage might help,, Merryanne"

07/19/2009: B from NY, NY replies: "Have you tried the BRAT diet? Bananas, Rice, Apples and dry Toast? No butter or sugars. I have also read that coconut (like macaroons/shredded) helps. Good luck..Poor baby."

07/21/2009: Sumeysh from Mumbai, India replies: "BRAT diet is ok... but if if its too severe .. perhaps your baby needs a different antibiotic like ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin ...pps ask your doc regarding this ...i personally used BRAT plus curd set at home using low fat milk (unsweetened)..it helps...you can also use mashed boiled potatoes (skinned)....with a pinch of salt"

07/25/2009: Dianne from Tampa, FL replies: "My toddler had a really bad recurring case of a stomach virus we had all picked up, but gotten over. I tried all the typical things that had ALWAYS worked in the past...colloidal silver, slippery elm, oil of oegano, with no results. My chiropractor told me to give him hydrated bentonite (you'll find it at the health food store). I gave him one tablespoon before bed and one in the morning and his diarrhea completely disappeared. This also worked for a friend who was going to admit her toddler into the hopital for diarrhea with the same results. When I researched it on the internet, I found that Bentonite as a cure for diarrhea has a 96% success rate."

EGG WHITES FOR DIAPER RASH

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/05/2009: Kathryn from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia writes: "A few months ago my littlest (then under 1) burnt his hand on the oven glass door. The recommendation of applying egg white from this site worked wonders. The pain subsided immediately after application. Anyway, about a month ago, and again, just a couple of days ago, my littlest (now 18 months) suffered a very red, raised skin rash in the nappy region. It was clear it was painful, as he cried and whinced whilst holding him on my hip. I remembered the relief the egg white had on the pain of his hand burn, so I thought, "why not?" I assumed he was experiencing a painful, burning sensation; something in his urine. I painted egg white on his bum with a small brush, and the pain relief was instant. Within 24 hours, the redness had subsided significantly. Lovely!!"

HEADACHES IN CHILDREN

1 QUESTION

[QUESTION]  07/20/2009: Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands writes: "My 6 1/2 year old daughter has started getting headaches from the past 2 months. I took her to the GP who couldn't find the cause. She wears glasses and I have recently got it checkes and her power hasn't changed. I am not able to figure what could be the cause of it. I or my husband never got headaches when we were young (we don't get it even now). I only get headaches very rarely when I have skipped a meal or when I have been too much in the sun. I thought these could be the reasons for my daughter to get it too. But from the past 2 days, I have avoided that for her and she still got the headache. Sometimes shortly after she wakes up, she has a slight headache. When it is slight, she is able to do her normal routine, play with her friends, etc. The headache is not accompanied with any nausea, vomitting, etc. A couple times she has got fever after the headache, but it goes off with 1 or 2 doses of over the counter fever/pain medication.

She is a little bit heavier than she should be, so I have been taking her for running on a field. Sometimes I have noticed that as soon as I mention that we have to go to the field, she gets a headache. And I know she is not lying. Could it be tension headache? I have told her this week I will not take her for running, instead just short walks on the street around the house (which she loves as we get to talk about all she likes to talk). I am going to check out this week by not taking her for running and if it continues, take her to padetrician next week.

What else could be the cause of her headache? And what are possible remedies. I don't think she would drink ACV or Cayenne pepper."

07/21/2009: Bharti from Doha, Qatar replies: "you can use safely 2 drops of lavender aromatherapy oil mix in 2 drops of almond oil mix it properly and put in on forehead temples and rest for 5-10 minutes, it works like magic and also safe for children .its good for migraine pain also.try and reply me if it works for you."

HONEY

2 YEA

[YEA]  08/15/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn writes: "To THeath from LA:

08/14/2008: THealth from Los Angeles, CA replies: "Hi, Even my daughter who is 21 months has food allergies. I am not sure whether I can give ACV or black strap molasses. I would really really appreciate if Ted can answer this. She is allergic to tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soy. Is there any natural way in which i can eliminate her allergies. She had her entire face swollen when she ate some noodles. After reading the content i realized that it was made in a facility where they process peanuts and shell fish. I am really worried about her and am looking for some natural cure. She has mild eczema on her hands too. Ted, please help. Your reply will be much appreciated. Thanks."

At 2l months old you can give her l tsp. of honey once or twice a day, but be sure that the honey is produced within a 50 mile radius of where you live, so it will contain pollens in your local area. If this doesn't do the trick, Benadryl or its generic (diphenhydramine Hcl) is a usually safe antihistamine, available without prescription and found in most places that also sell vitamins, minerals and supplements. The generic is cheaper than brand name."

[YEA]  08/15/2008: THealth from Los Angeles, CA replies: "Hi Joyce,

I really appreciate your reply. Thanks a lot. Should I give honey to my daughter (21 months) everyday once or twice or whenever she has food allergy attack. Will honey cure my daughter's food allergies permanently . Should we give Benadrly everyday ? If we give benadrly everyday and her body gets used to it then what will happen when she gets food allergy attack (Swollen face ). Will her body respond in this case ?

She is allergic to all tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soy. I am really worried about when she starts going to school or accidentally eats something from her friends in school which has any of the following things.

I would be really happy if honey can cure her food allergies. I will try to find anything produced within a 50 mile radius and am not sure if anything will be available in Los Angeles. How about some pure honey from wholefoods or some other organic stores?
Thanks again."

EC: Hi, THealth. Try one of the weekend farmer's markets in either Santa Monica, Venice, Beverly Hills or West Hollywood. I have bought locally-made honey at these markets many times before - yummy! Deirdre

08/16/2008: Joyce from Joelton, TN replies: "Hi, THealth:

I think the l tsp. of honey works by desensitizing to allergens, so give it daily, not just when you think she needs it.

To answer the question about the benadryl or diphenhydramine, food allergies are year round, not seasonal. So I'll answer with statements from the head of a pediatric department at a work shop I attended in l979. In his lecture, he said to never give benadryl during an acute asthma attack, but after you break the asthma attack, start them on benadryl and keep them on it. At the time of the lecture he stated that had children who had been on it continuously for 4 years (at that time) without problems."

09/30/2008: Angela from Tonasket, WA. replies: "I've heard about the honey comb being really good for temporary and possibly permenant curing of an allergen, but I know from experience that another way is a lot quicker, cheaper, and effective; It is called allergy elimination. It is a technique done by many different practitioners around. Refered to as NAET also. Look for a practitioner in your area by searching for NAET practitioners. My family had bad allergies, leading to "incurable" eating disorders. They were healed by this technique in only one treatment per allergy. . .and if you find a good practitioner, he'll do them all in one pop. Just a suggestion."

03/26/2009: Dina from Toronto, Ontario replies: "Colloidal Silver is the answer! It is an amazing NATURAL antibiotic. There are many websites that speak of it's amazing properties. Don't believe the lies, they FDA doesn't want you to get it - it's CHEAP! They want you to spend money on their drugs. Anyway, remember that old saying "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" - silver was and is an amazing health promoting miracle."

IODINE FOR ECZEMA

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/27/2008: Lisa from Coto de Caza, Ca writes: "Paint on povidone iodine twice daily on eczema patches. Worked on my 3 year and it's cheaper than the prescription drugs. Don't use iodine tincture since it has alcohol and will sting...especially for young child who scratches the eczema until it bleeds. Since the iodine stains clothes, I put large bandaids over the areas on his legs and arms."
