[YEA] Mae from Georgia writes: "I love baking and, unfortunately, burns go with the territory. I have found making a paste of baking soda mixed with a little water is effective if applied immediately. The baking soda seems to draw out the heat and reduce (or eliminate, depending on the degree) the redness. This works great for me, because when you are baking you always have baking soda right at your finger tips!"

BAKING SODA, BLACK TEA BAG

[YEA] 05/25/2008: Jasmine from Chicago, IL writes: "I saw that many had mentioned that baking soda when mixed into a paste (using water) relieves and sometimes eliminates burns. This is true, however, in my own experimentation, I no longer retain burns if I have baking soda on hand.
Apply the paste thickly over the burned area. The thicker the better. I leave it on until it dries, then rinse it off with water and reapply. Continue doing this until you have no pain. This completely takes the pain and redness out of 1st and 2nd degree burns. You won't even know you were burned! The first time you apply it, it will relieve the pain, but it may return. I've never had to apply it more than 4 times but trust me, taking the time to do this remedy will save you blistering, pain, and irritation later on!
There is one other remedy for burns. I once burned my hand on a very hot light bulb. My skin turned white on one site of the burn, indicating a 3rd degree condition. I didn't have any feeling in the area, the skin was completely dead. The other parts were red and sore, indicating a 2nd degree burn. A day past and I had no relief. The burn started looking worse. I tried honey, it only made me sticky but the heat was still there.
I knew that tea was an astingent, so I took a normal lipton black tea bag and dunked it in hot water twice, then I allowed the bag to cool. I placed the wet bag over the burn and wrapped my hand to keep it in place. I fell asleep for 2 hours and when I woke up the burn no longer hurt and was beginning to heal! I changed bags and rewrapped it for a few hours. My skin turned temporarily a little orange/brown but the burn gave me no problems afterward, healed perfectly and didn't scar at all."
[YEA] 08/08/2010: London from Sandusky , Ohio replies: "My mother burned her fingers and part of her hand really severely on the stove. I would say it was 3rd degree, it looked pretty bad. We did the egg white remedy, but mainly, what helped keep the pain levels tolerable was keeping a tea bag in there for a good 3 hours, (she took a nap) and we also alternated between the tea bags and baking soda paste mixed with egg whites. By the end of the day, the burn was almost gone. It was incredible, you could barely see it, and the pain was 100% gone! My mom is skeptical of these cures, but she was impressed!!"

BLEACH

[YEA] 02/12/2006: Julia from OR writes: "For BURNS: After getting a burn from irons, stoves, glue guns, etc. RUSH and pour regular bleach on it ASAP and let it sit on the affected area for a minute or two, then rinse. This will keep the area from blistering and cut the pain in half or eliminate it all together. If it's a small burn, it will kill all pain, if it's a larger burn, then it may be painful for the first few hours, but the pain will go away soon. I use this EVERY time I get a burn and it works wonders!"
Replies07/07/2009: Shona from Baytown, TX replies: "I burned my thumb pretty badly with a sparkler on the 4th. It is now the 7th and my thumb looked like one huge blister. It popped finally, releasing alot of fluid. It also hurt very badly and I thought it may becoming infected. I have only been using soap, water, and neosporin. I remembered back to when my kid brother caught his hand of fire by accidently putting a wind jacket on a candle. The wind jacket caught, he slapped it out, but ended up with melted plastic all in his hands. My mom had him soak his hands in a solution of bleach in water twice a day. He never got an infection, and it healed up just nicely. I tried this today. Filled a coffee cup up half with warm water and added 2 cup fulls of bleach. It turned my thumb white, burned for the first minute. Now I have it wrapped, clean, with neosporin. Bleach was always used by my mother's mother. For every thing, from cuts to burns, anything that needed a deep cleaning, bleach was used. I hope it works on this burn. Its the first time I have tried."
[WARNING!] 07/08/2009: Philip from Dearing, GA replies: "Warning about bleach. While I believe that bleach may be able to be used externally if it is very diluted, I have NO experience in dealing with bleach and WOULD NOT be able to give the recipe anyway...So to the WARNING, A fellow living in this area, who was an alcoholic, had developed a severe sore on his leg and was putting STRAIGHT BLEACH on it. HE DIED from blood poisioning, which the doctors said was because of the bleach getting into his blood stream. I don't know the reason why, but this gentleman had stopped drinking alcohol at the time he was treating his wound and the doctors ALSO said if he had CONTINUED drinking the alcohol at the time, that he would have NOT DIED. Something about the alcohol and his blood purity. Be careful when using bleach for anything. Be sure to do your research."

[YEA] 11/26/2011: Mizvee from Wallingford, Ct, Usa writes: "Try cinnamon on your next burn. I keep it in my car, back/sports pack, work & kitchen. Any burn; iron, gas/electric/wood stove, insect or jellyfish sting, motorcycle muffler or abrasion can be remedied using this native healing product. Our family has been using for generations for it's anispetic/healing capability. May be applied as often as needed. Doesn't stain clothing or furniture. Promotes healing via it's phytochemical compounds to reduce pain, counteract bacteria and disinfect wounds without blistering and little to no scarring. I've had 3rd degree burns from a clothes iron (inner arm) and from motorcycle pipes (leg calf) and have no scarring. Use it on my grandkids at the beach when they encounter jelly fish. Simply shake on, the pain is immediately gone. If pain returns (as with 2nd & 3rd degree burns) simply shake on more. Blistering will be minimal & will not run (aka 'leak'). Scabbing will look slightly darker than normal, but will come off without leaving any disfigurment to the skin surface. On major injuries, I use until fully scabbed. (And it smells good too! )"

COOL WATER

[YEA] 04/25/2010: Lorrie from Cameron Park, California writes: "Burn remedy
I was working in a sand candle making business. After forming the candle they had to be dipped in 250 degree wax to coat them. A large candle I was hand dipping slipped out of my hand and made the hot wax splash up on my hand past my wrist. My boss was there and grabbed me and filled a coffee can with regular cold (but not too) tap water. She had me keep my burn completely immersed for at least 30 minutes. When I removed my hand from the water, not only was the pain gone, but I also didn't blister and there was no permanent skin damage. A couple of years later I was working in a pizza parlor. The oven is usually around 500 degrees. I was scraping the stone that the pizzas sit on when it got stuck behind the stone. When I tried to pull it out my right hand came up and hit the top stone. The whole thumb side half of the back of my hand was burned. I grabbed a wet towel and put it around my hand till I could get to a water source and fill a bucket. I immersed my hand for a full 30 minutes (much to the displeasure of my boss). Once again not only did the pain go away, but also there was no blistering or any lasting scar. The skin was slightly discolored for a day or so. It seems that the most important thing for a burn is to seal it off from air. Also part of the shock of a burn is a rapid evaporation of fluid to the affected area. Simple water - not too cold - seemed to do the trick in both cases. It's been over 30 years since both incidents and I have never had any scarring or weakness of the affected areas."

DMSO

[YEA] 07/02/2010: Pammy from Malibu, California, United States writes: "One of the most amazing treatments I have ever used is DMSO for burns. I have had serious burns and minor burns.
Usually I just open the container and slap a big tablespoon of DMSO on the burn. It is best to do it right away. I keep it on for about 1/2 hr. I keep a jar in my kitchen for the possibilities of getting burned at the stove. It takes the pain away immediately and the pain never comes back. You can apply a little each day for awhile, but I have not found that necessary. I wish every one knew about this as burns can be so painful. And the burns heal up nicely.
It is either Canada or Alaska that they use DMSO in ER for burns. Blessings to all. Pammy"

[YEA] 09/03/2007: Bill from Santa Ana, ca writes: "I burned my finger one day at home. I quickly grabbed the DMSO washed my finger, poured it over the finger. The pain and swelling stopped immediately. No subsequent problems. While winter hiking in the Sierras a girl in our group burned her hand on a hoy stove. I applied the DMSO from my back pack. She came to me the next morning to say she had no distress at all from the burn. I also used it on my mother's face when she fell on the cement, smashing her glasses and nose. It moved the blood right out. The next day she had on a yellowing of the skin. Great stuff. I carry it everywhere."
Replies12/17/2008: Josh from New York, NY replies: "DMSO or Dimethylsulfoxide is used to carry things threw your skin, it penetrates nearly anything, its used for cancer treatment, brain swelling and lots of things but topical use on yourself? I dont think so. the reason it cleared up your mothers blood is because it sucked up the blood in solution and carried it trough the skin, and while it doesnt hurt to have dead blood cells floating around, you could just whip it off. Large amounts of dmso causes a garlic odor on the breath and sometimes the skin for days. Because it so readily penetrates the skin, it can carry things with it that are otherwise impossble to contract such as bacteria and toxins. So if you insist on using it THOUROGHLY wash the area befer hand and only wash with things you wouldnt mind floating around in your blood."

EGG WHITES

[YEA] 12/23/2011: Sherry D from Mansfield, Tx, United States writes: "This is the first time that I have ever posted to a site like this, but I felt that I had to share my story. Last night my husband was cooking dinner and when he opened the oven door, my 19 month old son touched the oven. His poor little fingers blistered up and he began screaming. I put aloe vera on it, and he finally cried himself to sleep. I thought that I was going to have to take him to the doctor, but after reading the suggestions on this site, I decided that I had nothing to lose. While he was sleeping, I soaked paper towels in egg whites and placed it over the burns and wrapped it with an ace bandage. When he woke up this morning, there is no trace of a burn on his hand. I am totally amazed..... thank all of you so much for your posts."

[YEA] 12/14/2011: Stephanie from New York, Ny writes: "EGG WHITES!!! I burned both my hands with hot oil while I was cooking. The burning would not STOP, after about 7 hours of constantly running to the ice water bowl I had created, I decided to try some home natural remedies as I desperately needed some relief of the awful burning stinging sensation. I read about egg whites and to my surprise it was working!! But it really worked, it took the stinging pain out right away, and I was able to then put on cream and a bandage. Thanks everyone for your experiences. I hope my review can help someone too!"

[YEA] 11/07/2011: Momskid from Lee's Summit, Mo writes: "I am so glad I found this website- or I would still be howling, "Mom, it HURTS!!! " You should try egg whites. First, I got a bowl of egg whites with a basting brush. Then, I spread the whites all over my burn. (by the way, I burned myself on the glass covering the fireplace. ) I also put plastic wrap and tin foil on the whites, but that's optional. Well, that didn't work, so I just poured the whites onto a plate and stuck my hand in. I kept it in there for about 20 minutes. Then, once, I stuck my hand out of the egg whites, and it stopped hurting. Go wash your hands, and you'll be out and playin' in no time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)"
Replies[YEA] 11/21/2011: Chris from Birmingham, Uk replies: "I burnt my left hand with boiling water on the palm and through the fingers through to the front of my hand. I tried to cool it down with a jug of cold water for about 2 hours but the pain just came back everytime I took it out of the water - and then I found this site. I would never have believed it but the egg whites have done the trick - I soaked my hand in them for half an hour and the pain is gone!! Unbelievable!! Thank you everyone who posted here - I would never have tried it if it wasn't for all these posts."
[YEA] 11/27/2011: Karen from Stoney Creek, On Canada replies: "The egg whites worked to cure my burn! I read the aluminum foil reviews but got the impression with that method the pain is pretty bad for a bit before it gets better. It seemed to be that the relief is more immediate with the egg whites so decided to go with that remedy instead. Well it worked like a charm... Right away I had his cooling sense and the pain subsided. I put the whites of 2 eggs in a bowl and just immersed my finger in there. If I took my finger out the pain would be back in seconds but as soon as I put it back in the whites it would just dissappear. So I kept it dunked in for an hour while watching tv and by the time my show was done I could take it out with no pain. No blister formed at all. I'm a believer! Try egg whites."

[YEA] 12/13/2010: Msdenad from Sugarloaf, Ca Usa writes: "My girlfriend spilled a over hot cup of black coffee that she had placed in the microwave for 2 minutes, the coffee spilled down her shirt and burned the middle of her breasts and unto the breast, the first thing she did was grab ice, I did not realize how bad the burn was. She started crying, when I finally convinced her to let me look at it, it was awful.
I ran to the computer and keyed bad burn, this site came up and there were a few different solutions, I looked at the largest YEA and found the egg white solution. I cracked about 4 eggs had her lay down and poured them on the burns, within 5 minutes, she told me that if felt much better. So now I am telling you EGG WHITES are the trick for the burn. She is just now going to bed, with dried eggwhite on her breast and chest and seriously she couldnt be happier. Thank you so much!"

I had been holding ice to them for 20 - 30 minutes, but the pain was still killing me. Tried one hour of soaking in egg white then allowing to dry and cake on my fingers. The pain was gone after an hour, and the blisters that were forming first completely stopped forming, and then subsided. Am using those fingers now to type, and that was just this morning, less than 12 hours ago."

[YEA] 06/21/2010: Jennifer from Mesquite, Tx writes: "Last week I was in the kitchen draining noodles and lost my grip on the pot. I poured the still boiling noodles all over my right hand. I screamed and immediately let cold water run over it for about a minute and a half. I didn't know what to do for burns so I got some organic aloe vera gel out of the fridge and poured it over my hand which was very red and very painful. I put the gel in a bowl and kept my hand in it for about 5 minutes, but everytime I would lift my hand out, the horrible pain would return. My husband ran to the computer to see what the top cures were for burns. EGGWHITES. He cracked and seperated about six or seven cold egg whites into a bowl, and I put my burning hand it that instead. It felt immediately better! By this time, my hand was swelling a little and still very red and painful. I left my hand in the eggwhite mixture from eight pm to eleven pm, keeping my hand coated. By that time the pain was pretty much gone. I was tired and didnt want to sleep with my hand in the egg white bowl, so I coated my hand in the eggwhites and let it dry on my hand like a glove. I did that over and over til I had about three or four coats of dried egg whites on my hand, and then went to sleep like that. By morning I didnt know what to expect to see unter the egg white glove. I went to the bathroom to wash it off carefully. As all the egg whites disolved under the water, I quickly realized, there was no pain, no redness, no swelling and no scarring of any kind!!!! I use my right hand for everything for work and for making jewelry. This cure was a Godsend! Thank you earthclinic!!!!! God bless each of you who keeps this website up and running. My family loves you from the bottom of our hearts. I always tell everyone I know about you. They are believers too. Keep up the amazing work! Jennifer"

[WARNING!] 08/25/2011: Kit from Bribie Island, Australia replies: "This is not true... If you go and do some research you will find that you must cool the burn first with cold water, not ice, cold running water and this is only for 1st and 2nd degree burns. 3rd degree burns, keep them breathing, cover with wet clothes but DO NOT immerse in water.Egg whites can contain salmonella and can cause infection and even death. If you insist on using them as mentioned in one medical reference in the late 1890s... cool the burn with water first..."

[YEA] 06/19/2010: Lisa from Socal, Ca, Usa writes: "I got a burn on my arm from taking some food out of the oven. I tired using ice to relieve the pain but it is very short term. I looked on Earth Clinic and found egg whites, so I slightly beat the egg white, applied to the burn and put a small piece of paper towel over to hold egg whites to the skin. Surprisingly, the pain went away. After it dried, it came off the burn and I began to feel pain again, so I reapplied the egg white.
The next day I began applying Vit. E oil several times a day and it healed with no scar, just very light skin. Once spring came around the light area tanned and it's not noticeable anymore."

[YEA] 06/18/2010: Katie from Tel Aviv, Israel writes: "Egg whites for burns - a big yes! Anyone who cooks regularly will get a little burn every so often. While for most people a little burn will heal in a week or two, when I get a burn it will take about a year to heal, even for a slight burn.
I put egg white on a burn I got about a month ago. Within days it was healed with no mark. I was excited, but I thought maybe it was because it was a very minor burn. I felt I needed to try the cure again to be sure. Well I didn't do it on purpose, but a few weeks later, I got not one, but two burns from my wok, one day after the other. The burns were more substantial. The first burn mark is now completely healed a week after I got it. The scab on the second is starting to flake off, and I see that the skin is normal underneath. This is amazing, considering that I still have a mark from a similar burn from my wok that I got about 8 months ago! I will no longer go around with burn scars all the time!!
I've always wondered why my skin doesn't heal normally in the first place. It's not just burns, but cuts too. They do eventually heal, but take months instead of days. If anyone has any insight, I'd love to hear it. Thanks all!
Try the egg whites on your next burn. It not only helped me heal but took the pain away. And watch out for rogue woks!"
08/30/2010: Katie from Tel Aviv, Israel replies: "Update: A few weeks ago, after one of the burns had healed completely, out of the blue it turned red again and blistered. Over the course of a few days the blister subsided and it rehealed, but now I do have a mark, like my other scars. This is really strange. How can a healed scar go back to being an open wound on its own? Does anyone have any idea how this could happen?"
10/30/2010: Wihann from Strand, Wc South Africa replies: "To Katie from Tel Aviv. My wife had the same strange symptoms and we discovered she has porphyria."

I failed to mention that I had started hydrogen peroxide therapy to the technician before the treatment. This intensified the effects of the lazer on my skin. [YEA] 10/15/2009: Claire from Tampa, Fl writes: "I must post a resounding YEAH for this cure. I burned myself badly on my iron, and only days later read about the egg white cure. I wish I had know about it then. I just put aloe on the burn and still have a scar. I have burned myself (minor) on a hot oven and hot pan handle since then and have put egg whites on the burn each time, and each time within 30 minutes, the burn disappeared."
Replies[WARNING!] 11/01/2009: Tom from Fitchburg, Mass replies: "Placing egg whites on a burn is dangerous. Cold water will cool a burn quick. Egg whites will hold the heat in and continue the burning. It can also cause an infection if the skin is broken. Run the burn under cold water and seek medical attention."
[YEA] 11/01/2009: Moi from V Ville, Ca replies: "Tom, have to disagree with your warning. Not long ago I spilled boiling/scalding water on my fingers. Really sore. Ran cold water over them for a minute or so while I tried to think/remember what to do. Pain was awful and I could see the fingers beginning to swell. I remembered the egg white solution. My fingers felt like they were being bitten by about 50 piranhas at this point. I separated the yoke from the white of one egg and put the white into a bowl and put my fingers into the cold -eggs were in 'fridge- egg white. Instant relief, and within minutes my fingers were getting their normal color back and the swelling went way down. I then soaked up the egg whites in a paper towel and wrapped that around my fingers and left that on for a few hours more. By evening there was no pain, no swelling everything was perfect. I know I would have had a very different outcome if I had not used the white of the egg.
Peace"
[YEA] 03/29/2010: Myriam from Perth, Australia replies: "I have to strongly disagree as well. I wanted to pour boiling water in my warm bottle and pour it over my fingers, it hurts so badly i put myfingers under the water with no relief at all, screaming to my husband to crack an egg and pour the egg white in a bowl. My nail start to peel, that was a bit scary. The moment i put my fingers in it, i had such a relief, nothing to compare with water. I left my fingers there for an hour, i was really scared to take them out, i thought it was going to blister anyway. I kept reading what else i could do, and decided to put aluminum foil over them. This morning no sign whatsoever that something happens. Amazing, i'm glad for the tip. Thank you"

[YEA] 08/30/2009: Jen from East Bay, California writes: "Egg Whites for SUNBURNS! Today my 11 year old daughter was attending a bday party at a waterpark and decided sunscreen wasn't that important. She is VERY VERY fair skinned (like her mom) and came home with a severe sunburn (already starting to blister). I had her bathe in cool water but I know from a few months ago this is a short term solution. A friend mentioned egg whites, I was thinking it might be a little crazy but decided to try. I used a basting brush to apply several layers and put a damp towel covering her back....out of ALL THE YEARS I have used Aloe Vera, you could STILL feel the heat rising off of the skin. Her skin is COOL TO THE TOUCH!!!! And her pain is VERY MUCH relieved compared to other times when other remedies didn't last!! The only reason I'm here is because earlier I figured I should at least look up this egg white idea to make sure it wasn't something that would cause further issues. So, for all of you who need a remedy for a SUNBURN, THIS IS THE BEST ONE SO FAR FOR US! :) THANK YOU!!!"

[YEA] 06/16/2009: SassySarah from Los Angeles, California writes: "Last weekend, I opened a cooking pot in the oven and the steam burned my wrist. I immediately put a pack of frozen corn wrapped in a dish towel on it. It made it feel better, but as soon as I took the cool pack away, the pain as so intense I wanted to cry. I pulled up Earth Clinic, and read that egg whites helped pull the heat out. I first put an egg white soaked rag on my wrist for 5 minutes, and it helped a ton. But shortly after removing, the pain returned just as intensely. I did it a second time for about 10 minutes, and the same thing happened. Finally, I read more of the testimonials and realized I needed to leave it on for a long time so I put it on for 30 minutes while watching TV. I went to bed shortly after, woke up and my skin was discolored but not blistered. I followed it up with some aloe the next day once I bought it, and I'm on the road to recovery. I am also trying pure lavender oil as that is supposed to help heal minor burns. Seems to be helping, too."

Just before I went to bed, I soaked it again in ACV & water.....woke up the next morning, NO BLISTERS! JUST A FEW TENDER SPOTS....Like a miracle....Thanks for this wonderful sight."

But do not forget the first thing you have to do cool it down under cold running water for 5 minutes or so. Otherwise the skin will keep burning even after being removed from the heat source. You have to cool it down before applying the egg whites."
