This is just a minor comment. I believe that if a food tastes better, it's better for the body, excluding poisonous over-refined foods & MSG... I've tried the Fair-trade BS Molasses & it tastes awful. Grandma's, & "OLD" Plantation molasses, as well as all the other Black Strap Molasses brand's that I've tried do not taste good. I can see why people think they have to take their molasses w/ warm milk to make it taste good. The one brand that consistantly tastes wonderful, for me, is "Plantation" molasses, NOT "old Plantation". Plantation Molasses, to me, is perfect. I drink it straight from the bottle, along with some tahini. In fact, the combination of tahini and Plantation molasses is out of this world! I love it & drink it everyday. It's really one of my main staples. I put tahini in just about all of the veggies I eat, along w/ other spices like turmeric, soy-sauce(only organic-no gmo soy), sea salt, stevia... Try it, & you'll see. At the health food store it's like $5.50/bottle, but I'm certain it's cheaper online. Enjoy!

BTW: On ebaY someone tries to sell a 16 FL OZ. bottle (that is approximately half the quantity) of the same stuff for $8.55 plus $7.13 shipping, which is really expensive if you consider that it is a by-product from the processing of (sugarcane or sugar beet into) sugar and it is being used in the manufacture of cattle feed, and for other industrial uses. So keep asking at your local shop if they do not want to start selling it...

OK. If I am not mistaken blackstrap molasse is a black kind of sugar made from sugar cane or beet, right? It has a strong smell and is very dark, almost black which is why it is called blackstrap molasse. If this is what you're talking about it is called "melasse noire" and can probably be found in a "epicerie Antillaise" (grocery store from Guadeloupe/Martinique) or any store that sells exotic products.

Hi, Just wanted to point out that you can purchase a large jar of Black Strap Molasses for less than Two Pounds (£2) from Holland and Barretts (natural)... I wouldn't refrigerate it though.. it just hardens up... and for those that take a spoon full directly i would recommend dipping the spoon in some water... leaving a few drops on and then using the top of the mouth to scrape it from the spoon. The water helps it glide off easier.. and the top of the mouth helps avoid the molasses from getting stuck on your teeth... and then immediately rinse the mouth to wash excess away. I went to my local Holland & Barrets and they had "Meridian Natural Molasses Pure Cane". Is this "Blackstrap Molasses" because it didn't say Blackstrap anywhere.

I use Meridian Natural Molasses Pure Cane too which if you go onto the Meridian website (their website is on the jar) explains that it is Black Strap Molasses and is unsulphured too.

Hi, as mentioned that Blackstrap molasses is available as GUR in India, but I don't thing that's true. Because GUR is nothing but Jaggery. And I thing Jaggery is not BlackStrapMolasses. Pls correct me if I am wrong.... So the hunt for BSM continues in India... Any luck ?

Gur can be made from date sap or from cane sap. Gur is simply an edible form of fruit sap. Molasses in Calcutta would be cane sugar sap (or akhi gur, in the local Bengali language). I am not sure which type of molasses you want, so I can't help you further than that!

In India and most countries that have sugar cane plantations just visit a farm and ask them for the molasses. Molasses are not strictly gur but it is the residue produced while making it .Ask the farmers to save you some, they could bottle it and for them it would be an extra source of income. You could also take it piping hot when it is being made at the farms.

Gur is jaggery and not molasses. Molasses is not understood by farmers here in India. Akha Gur is also jaggery, only in a different form. Molasses can be made only after the jaggery part is done from the sugarcane.

I spent nearly 2 months in searching for BSM in every Health store, Organic food shop, medical shop, etc that I know. go to a local sugarcane factory and ask for molasses. this blackstrap molasses is also used in alcohol preparation, so it is usually not given unless the owner feels comfortable giving you bsm for your health benefits. good luck.

bsm is needed while preparing sesame oil.. so you can also buy bsm in the oil mill..

Hi Vidya...When you purchase 'Blackstrap' molasses, ask questions about how they make it.

Proper Blackstrap Molasses and ordinary Molasses are not the same. Blackstrap Molasses is the sticky residue left after the third boiling of the sugar cane or molasses.

Ordinary Molasses is only the first or second boiling of the sugar cane, and therefore contains much more sugar and less concentrated minerals than Blackstrap. Ordinary molasses therefore does not have the health benefits of Blackstrap Molasses.

Therefore, ensure that what you purchase is proper Blackstrap Molasses.

I can't tell you where you can find it in Belgium as I never looked for it there but in Holland it is easy to find in the reform winkels like De Tuinen, Het Kruidvat and others. I don't know whether they have De Tuinen in Belgium but if they do consider visiting it, it is such a great health shop.... I love it!

BSM is available at Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocer - see naturalgrocers.com for locations and phone numbers, they tend to be in the western US. I saw it in the section with the honeys and syrups at their location near me, which was at next to Panera at Preston and Forest, in Dallas. I didn't catch the price exactly but remember being less than I paid online (but a smaller bottle).
