I tried the oil pulling with extra virgin olive oil, because I am having problems clearing an ongoing sinus infection. I used one tablespoon and kept it in my mouth for about 11 minutes. Exactly how does it help? I do feel somewhat less stuffy. I intend to keep trying and see if it gets better. But I am curious as to how it benefits the sinuses. Mine was very milky looking when I spit it out. Thanks

Hi! Have you tried adding a couple of drops of Oil of Oregano to your Olive Oil? I'm a chronic sinus sufferer and have found that Oil of Oregano is very powerful for sinus infections. I don't oil pull with it, but use a couple of drops beneath my tongue a few times per day while sick. I have also read where it can be diluted with the olive oil for pulling. Oil of Oregano alone is very caustic and can burn, so it must be diluted with use. Good luck :)

Hi. I do oil pulling. After spitting out old oil put some bicarbonate of Soda and a little salt in warm water. Rinse a few times then use the rest with your toothbrush. Then rinse with warm water only. Gets rid of the taste of oil and makes your teeth even whiter. I got this tip from earthclinic so its not my own. Just thought I would pass it on as it is hard to read everything that was written before. Jules

(To Jules from Hampshire, England): Hi, thank you for reminding me of the proper thing to do after OP. I thought I could skip the extra gargling & go right to brushing.:) Sorry to those reading; I didn't mean to sound like OP was such a pain to do. IT'S NOT. It's probably just me who's too sensitive about the 'taste' thing. Thanks again to EC for this brilliant site!!

I oil pull 1 tablespoon with olive oil every morning (love the way I feel all day) My concerns are that. I live in the midwest and it gets very cold in the winter. My question is should I wear a hat before going outside in the cold, after pulling. Since it open your head and sinuses up? I know that sounds silly, but I'm pre-menopausal so I get very hot and the cool air feels good. But I don't want to get sick.

★☆☆☆☆

i started op a few weeks ago as I was looking for a cure for a coated tongue, it was difficult at first to kepp the oil in my mouth for more than a minuete, but then got the hang of it and can now do a full twenty mins. However, I am using olive oil and see no significant difference in my body or mind. I cured my white tongue with salt brushing and now am op just because i am reading it is good for me!

I hope this is not a silly question but when you say sesame oil are you actually talking about sesame seed oil that is found in the oriental section of the grocery. Cause i cant find anything that says sesame oil or sunflower oil in the section where all the oils are.

EC: Yes, that's usually where you'd find sesame oil.

Make sure you DON'T buy the dark one. It should look like vegetable oil in color. Good Luck!!

I have used just about every kind of organic, cold pressed oil. None of them are white at the end, except for coconut oil (which starts out white). I wouldn't worry about it - just stay with it. BTW, some of the claims from people who are oil pullers seem a bit extreme. My teeth are definitely whiter and I think I feel less congested. It is a quiet, meditative way to start the day. If there are any other results, I am not aware of them (I've been at it for 9 months.) Good luck!

@Sweetbug from Stone Mountain, Georgia. I'm new to oil pulling, and was just reading your question about Sesame oil. I found cold-pressed organic sesame oil at a health food store. It is pale like vegetable oil, not dark brown like the sesame oil you find in the oriental section of the grocery, which I believe is usually toasted sesame seed oil. The cold-pressed sesame oil smells and tastes less nutty, and so that is the one that I am going to try. The health food store also had cold-pressed sunflower and safflower which others here have also used.

I tried oil pulling for the first time this evening. I used 1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Cold Pressed) and was only able to do it for about 7 minutes because my mouth became to full. I rinsed my mouth out with warm water afterwards and then brushed my teeth. Now my gums are sore and swollen! Did I do something wrong?

I found great relief from oil pulling for chronic sinus, nasal & ear blockage, mouth lesions and blood blisters. My ongoing symptoms have appeared when exposed to moldy housing conditions, not overlooking the molds on improperly washed foods. I tried oil pulling from oil in plastic bottles because I had very little money and could get plenty of extra virgin olive oil on sale buy one get one free.

It tasted so awful I almost threw up!!!! And my oil pulling results became adverse. I became ultra sensitive to smells in the air like exhaust fumes, molds from the rains and tropical Key West heat, chemical smells like burning tires- from some unknown source, etc. I stopped using the cheap oil.

f.y.i. Wash produce with 1 TBLS. white vinegar per qt. of tap water. 15 min. of soaking can revive wilted veggies making them look fresh again. For a bit more expense a great wash called BIOCLEAN is made using the fabulous GSE.

By all means never forget the power of prayer to our Great Creator for clarity of choices to heal ourselves! BLESSINGS!

In response to Extra Virgin Olive Oil not turning white, I too had the same issue when I first tried OP. I only had the olive oil on hand when I first decided to try this. I even added the Peppermint Oil and a drop of Tea Tree Oil like Ted said, and ensured I was thoroughly hydrated before (the more hydrated the more saliva you produce) - it was still yellowish.

The next day I decided to buy some Cold pressed Sesame Oil - the result? White liquid after pulling for only 10 minutes. My belief is that the deeper green/yellow colour of Olive Oil is why it does not turn white so easily. The Sesame Oil is naturally more lighter in colour, and more viscous. If you still want to use the Olive Oil, use a little less than 1 TBS, and add some peppermint or tea tree oil to boost the anti-bacterial properties of your oil.

I feel the Sesame Oil is MUCH better, and my teeth feel amazingly clean and white. Ensure that you cleanse your mouth thoroughly with Baking Soda and salt mixed with water. Try and eliminate other toxins, by using baking soda as toothpaste, and baking soda and vinegar to wash your hair (do a "NO POO" search on google and you'll see the benefits of eliminating shampoo from your cleaning routine).

It's amazing how many harmful chemicals we use on a day to day basis both in and on our bodies. I am in the process of losing a lot of weight, and it makes sense to help your body to not only dump the fat, but other toxins as well. Dry brushing and epsom salt baths are also boosting my weight-loss. Hope that helps.

I TRIED THIS OP TODAY. BUT FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO DO IT FOR THE MINIMAL TIME OF 10 MIN. THE URGE TO SPIT WAS SO GREAT BECAUSE OF ALL THE SALIVA BUILD UP. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM, IF SO WHAT WAS THE SOLUTION? I WANT TO CONTINUE THIS AND RECIEVE ALL THE BENEFITS. EVEN THOUGH I WAS ONLY TO HOLD IT IN FOR 6 MINS., I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO FELL MY SINUSES DRAINING!! HOW WEIRD BECAUSE I DON'T EVEN REALLY HAVE SINUS PROBLEMS!!! ALSO I HAD A TOOTH ACHE LAST NITE BECAUSE I HAVE AN ABCESS AND NEED A ROOT CANAL. WELL IT FELT SOOO MUCH BETTER AFTERWARDS. I HAD BEEN GIVEN PENACILLIN AND TOOK IT FOR 10 DAYS WITHOUT MUCH RELIEF. I DID THIS OP 10 DAYS AFTER I FINISHED MY ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY SO I AM SURE THE RELIEF IS NOT FROM THAT! I USED OLIVE OIL BUT AFTER THIS POSTING I AM GOING TO GET THE SUNFLOWER OIL !!!!!!THANK YOU

I went to health food store twice yesterday looking for correct oil; the only cold pressed oil that they had was olive. I could hardly sleep with excitement of my first oil pulling... After 2 minutes I had to spit out oil because of mucus in throat. Yellow. Again for maybe 3 minutes I swished oil with mucus in throat, spitting out white substance. Another try for about 2-3 minutes, I spit out white substance and coughted up 2 globs of white thick mucus. Dry heaving and wanting to vomit over toilet bowl. I could have swished the oil around for the full time but for the draining mucus in throat. It was not unpleasant having the oil in my mouth at all as I was using a nice fine olive oil. I'll continue tomorrow morning and trust that with time I'll be able to manage 20 minutes. In the meantime, I am most grateful for this information.
