Natural Remedies for Diabetes Type II

Diabetes type II rates are increasing worldwide at alarming rates. Diabetes is a serious health problem and can cause multiple secondary health problems. Natural remedies for diabetes type II include dietary changes, nutritional supplements, apple cider vinegar, milk kefir and exercise. Diabetes responds well to natural treatments for diabetes. Your health is worth making the effort to getting your diabetes under control.

Type II diabetes, sometimes known as adult onset diabetes, can usually be controlled with diet. Those with type II diabetes are not insulin dependent like those with type I diabetes. With type II diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or isn't using it properly.

Symptoms of type II diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue, and visual problems.

Left untreated, type II diabetes can cause blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, nerve problems and even death.

What Causes Diabetes Type II?

Diabetes type II is usually connected to a poor diet and lack of exercise. It has also been linked to genetics.  Other things that may cause diabetes are infection, vaccinations and nutritional deficiencies.

Upon request from one of  our contributors, Earth Clinic has created a one question online survey regarding the causes of type II diabetes. If you have diabetes type II and would like to participate, you please use this link to get to the survey.

Dietary Changes

A poor diet is usually a precursor to diabetes. Improving the quality of the diet will improve blood sugar levels and provide important nutrients needed for healing. Because each person is different, there may not be a "perfect" diabetes diet. You will need to work on improving your diet and watching your sugar levels to see how your own body handles different foods. For example, honey and blackstrap molasses are healthy sweeteners that seem to benefit some diabetics. Yet, other diabetics cannot tolerate them.

To begin with, diabetics need to reduce sugar and simple carbohydrate intake. If you consume a lot of sugar and carbs, you will need to dramatically reduce the sugar intake. Artificial sweeteners are not a good substitute for sugar as they bring a whole host of health issues with them. Switch to whole grain foods like brown rice, quinoa, and oatmeal. Whole grains should be part of the diet but not the bulk of it. Good proteins and good fats are important, too.

Good protein sources include beans, legumes, lean meats, tuna, salmon and cottage cheese.

Good fats include olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados.

Fruits and vegetables are important, too. Too much fruit can have a bad effect on blood sugar. Leafy greens, green beans, okra, broccoli and sweet potato are some great vegetables. Starchy vegetables like white potato should be eaten more moderately.

Fiber is also an important component to a healing diet. Flax seeds and chia seeds are good sources and can be added to a bowl of oatmeal or to  salads.

Supplements

A number of supplements have been found helpful for diabetics. Supplements help to provide nutrients to the body to make it work better. If you have had a poor diet or poor quality of food, your body is likely low in important nutrients. Supplements will do just that - supplement your diet.

  • Vitamin C
  • Chromium
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • B Complex
  • Selenium

Apple Cider Vinegar for Diabetes

Apple cider vinegar is a simple natural treatment for diabetes. Apple cider vinegar contains trace nutrients and helps to alkalize the body. It improves digestion and metabolism for many people.

Milk Kefir

The positive effect that milk kefir has had for some with diabetes would implicate that bacteria may be the cause of diabetes, at least for some. Milk kefir contains many probiotics which help to improve the bacterial balance in the system.

Cinnamon

Ceylon cinnamon has improved blood sugar levels for many diabetics. Ceylon cinnamon can be added to food or taken in capsules with meals. It helps the body to regulate blood sugar.

Herbs

A number of herbs may be helpful to diabetics. Herbs can help supply nutrients to the body, improve metabolism, and help regulate blood sugar.

  • Chanca Piedra
  • Banaba Leaf
  • Berberine
  • Turmeric
  • Yellow Dock
  • Ginger
  • Prickly Pear Cactus

Exercise

Exercise is helpful to most health conditions. Regular exercise is important for those with diabetes as well. Regular exercise helps to reduce glucose in the blood. It improves metabolism and circulation. If you are not used to exercise, start slowly. Begin with a couple of five minute walks each day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Try to increase the amount of activity you get each day until you are getting 30 minutes of exercise 4-5 days a week.

Cautions

There is no "one size fits all" solution for type II diabetes. When you are making changes to your diet and supplement routines, you will likely experience changes in your blood sugar. Carefully monitor your blood sugar levels so you will learn how the changes you are making affect you. Make changes one at a time. Ideally you will be working with your health care professional as well.

It is likely that you will need to make several changes to improve your diabetes. One supplement is not usually enough. Improving your diet, getting some exercise and taking herbs or supplements will work together to bring you back to good health.
