Hi! I am a 40 year old woman with PCOS.

I have severely thinning hair, irregular periods and a 50 lb weight gain. I have read the ACV cure on this site and wanted to know from people who have tried it how long it took before they saw results with stopping the hair loss and regrowing hair? Also, did you take ACV 2 times a day or what is the recommended dosage?

I have heard that ACV causes constipation. Any way of countering that side-effect?

I also take a daily multi-vitamin, Saw Palmetto capsule, fish oil and Biotin ( for hair) every day.

Appreciate your time and advice!

Thank you Bill for putting my mind at rest. I was beginning to think I was in error when I stopped the additional supplements once my maintaence dose of 5% Lugols began. I was only taking a multivitamin along with some Vitamin C (1000 mg) and Vitamin D (4000 IU) each day. I have just recently read your thoughts about multivitamins so am currently reevaluating my options. There is so much info here on Earth Clinic it can get a bit overwhelming at time. The suggestion for a hair analysis is an excellant one. Now I just need to find a good lab!

Hi Linda... What you did in your iodine protocol was the correct thing to do. As regards needing to take the companion nutrients continuously, you should only continue taking the nutrients that you are lacking in your diet. So, if you are worried about this, then just get a hair analysis done to show you what minerals are lacking in your own body and you will find out what's missing in your diet or you can supplement accordingly.

So my view is that if you are sufficient in a nutrient like selenium in your body -- then there is no real reason to take it as a supplement.

Generally, it is also mostly true that nutrients like iodine, magnesium, selenium, Vit c, B vits etc are the biggest culprits missing from our diets. I thnk that many of the iodine companion nutrients are advised simply because most are actually the favourites missing from our western diets on a daily basis (thereby causing other problems). Of course this lack of food nutrients can vary from region to region because of differences in soil health too.

The main reason, when you start supplementing higher dose lugol's iodine, why you must take the iodine companion nutrients is to assure that there are no other reasons which contribute to iodine malabsorption or other problems in the body.

You are pretty lucky not to have had a Herx die-off or a detox effect while supplementing higher dose lugols iodine. In America, the food is grown on poor soils which are greatly lacking in essential nutrients and this problem is further compounded because of all the food additives -- heavy metals, bad halides, pesticides, fungicides and GMO that are eaten every day. 10, 000 years ago humans moved from being hunter-gatherers to having an agricultural diet existence. Then, from the 1800s onwards, with the birth of the Industrial Revolution were born the modern farming methods and drugs that we use today. Later, chemically processed foods were touted as the cheaper and healthier alternative for an overpopulated world. Trouble is that our bodies adjust very slowly to major diet changes -- and it is a fact that our bodies still haven't really adjusted yet to our original move to an agriculturally based diet 10,000 years ago. Meanwhile the FDA and USDA continues to tell Americans what is good for them to eat. And we just get sicker and sicker as a result, while the agricultural and drugs cartels get richer and richer. You don't really need a double blind placebo trial costing millions of dollars to know that this is so obviously true...

Bill: Reading your excellent response has me wondering if I am doing something wrong regarding my Lugol's. When I was initially taking it at 8 drops of 5% Lugol's I took the supplements you suggested for the 3 months I was using Lugol's at this higher dose. After that 3 months period I slowly reduced my Lugol's intake to just my present 2 drops per day as my maintenance dose.

I thought the supplements were only necessary during the heavier detox period when I was taking 8 drops daily. I never experienced any detox side effects so assumed I was one of the lucky ones during those months or perhaps the supplements were responsible for the easy 3 months I experienced.

Either way, once I was down to the 2 drops daily maintenance dose, I stopped all the supplements. Was I supposed to continue taking these supplements for the rest of my life while taking Lugol's 5% ?

If so, I will start but I need an answer to this first. Thank you.

Hi Ashley... In answer to you questions:

Am I suppose to take everything together or should I take Iodine first then the supplements hours later?

Take the lugol's iodine drops alone in a glass of water outside mealtimes. Start small and go slow with the dosage.

5% Lugols Iodine contains 6.25 mgs per drop

2% Lugols Iodine contains 2.50 mgs per drop

So to reach a 50 mgs daily dose with 5% Lugols Iodine will take 8 drops (8 X 6.25) and will take 20 drops with a 2% lugols solution(20 X 2.5).

Split the lugols dosage into four smaller dosages per day -- early morning, late morning, early afternoon and late afternoon. Avoid taking the lugols in the evening -- it tends to energize the body so you might have difficulty sleeping if you take it at night.

Use the magnesium(Mag Oil) transdermally whenever you like. You can also use and supplement the Mag Oil in a glass of water -- ten drops a day.

Alkalize outside mealtimes.

Take Vitamin C as Sodium Ascorbate(avoid calcium ascorbate) on its own or at mealtimes.

Take the zinc, magnesium(as a pill supplement), selenium, niacin, B Vitamins and Chanca Piedra at mealtimes.

Bill and Lisa I have one last question before I start with the Lugol's Solution and the supplements... Am I suppose to take everything together or should I take Iodine first then the supplements hours later? Not really sure but just want to be sure so that I don't having any reactions from everything being mixed together. And is it best to Lugol's in juice or water?

Hi Ashley... The reason that the videos you saw didn't mention companion nutrients for iodine is because iodine has such widespread and beneficial effects on the body and is therefore a highly complex biochemical subject in itself. Simply put, the lugols iodine companion nutrients like magnesium, selenium, zinc, B3 etc are all there in the protocol to remove other possible problems arising, which might also cause malabsorption of iodine/iodide in the body -- the much needed companion nutrients act effectively as essential body detoxifiers, immune boosters, powerful antioxidants and are also necessary for the production of body enzymes and coenzymes support involving the thyroid and whole-body iodine storage processes, which necessarily helps to prevent problems like auto-antibody reactions caused by excessive production of free-radicals when thyroid hormone production is suddenly increased in the thyroid gland.

Here are the companion nutrients which, at a minimum, should normally be taken along with lugol's iodine on a daily basis:

50 mg Iodoral or lugol's iodine minimum (may start with 12.5 mg).

Vitamin C - 3,000 mg per day (more may be necessary to detox bromide).

300-600 mg magnesium oxide (Iodine Investigation Project participants prefer magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate.)

200 mcg selenium. The selenomethionine version is preferred by many.

500 mg niacin (B3) twice a day (NOT niacinamide). Start lower to avoid flush. *See update in left margin on the ATP Cofactors as an alternative.

100 mg Vitamin B2 three times a day. *See update in left margin on the ATP Cofactor as an alternative.

A comprehensive vitamin and nutrition program.

(Feb 2008) Dr. Guy Abraham cautions that "excess calcium supplementation (2,000- 3,000 md/day) has been the most common cause of poor response to iodine supplementation." Vitamin Research News Vol. 22. Number 2.

Source: http://www.breastcancerchoices.org/iprotocol.html

My own further advice and recommendations, which are optional, are as follows:

Avoid multivitamin tablets like the plague. For all the reasons, see the Vitamin C article that I wrote in a past EC Newsletter -- near the end of the article.

Use Magnesium Chloride or Magnesium Oil -- Mag Oil can easily be used transdermally and is the best magnesium form to take. For more info see Mark Sircus's book called Transdermal Magnesium Therapy.

Avoid Calcium in your diet - so avoid dairy. Excess calcium inhibits iodine absorption in the body.

Take L-Tyrosine -- 500 mgs per day. Tyrosine is needed to assist conversion of iodide to iodine for storage in the thyroid and other iodine storage sites in the body.

Take Chanca Piedra herb as a tea or as capsules(1000 mgs 3 times a day at meals). CP helps to protect and assist the liver and is also hypolipidemic, hypotensive, hypoglycemic and is a mild, cleansing diuretic for the blood. CP also acts as a calcium channel blocker.

Include zinc in you protocol.

Using Ted's alkalizing protocols will also beneifit you and help cure any malabsorption or pH issues.

Ashley, these are the recommended companion nutrients for the iodine protocol:

Vitamin C-2,000-5,000 mg/day
Magnesium-400 mg/day
Selenium-200 mcg/day
Unrefined sea salt-1/2 tsp/day (this salt is either grey or pink)

But when I listened to the 2 hour interview the Dr. Didn't say anything about his patients taking both and just want to know if Bill or anyone else has info. If so please post b/c I have been dealing with PCOS since 2007 and am ready to try anything to get rid of it or control it! So if anyone has any helpful info can you please email me or post it. Hi there, I've read that some people have been taking a few teaspons of Apple Cider Vinegar in a bit of water to regulate their period , as I believe you have. Anyway, it's been two weeks today since I started && no period :( Most people got it a week and a half later, should I keep at it?? Also, it's not 'organic' Apple Cider Vinegar as it is impossible to find it, it is unpasterized and free from preservatives, however I am now concerned it will not work because it is not organic... :( x

I have a myriad of health problems.... Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Adrenal Fatigue, Thyroid Issues and PCOS... ugh!! Anyway, I started taking ACV twice a day to help alkaline the body since I had come to find that I am extremely acidic, even after changing my diet.

I noticed that my PCOS improved almost immediately. I got my period every 28 days (which has never happened)! I tried testing the ACV theory since I do end up doing lots of various things for my various ailments, so I stopped taking ACV regularly and lo and behold... My period did not come every 28 days. Once I started it up again, I am like clock work. I take 2T ACV w/ 1/4t of baking soda twice a day. I also eat gluten free, sugar free, limit my grains to 1 a day, eat lots of protein, have lots of healthy fats and limit my fruit intake. I have insulin resistence like with most others with PCOS, so limiting sugars, even natural sugars and eliminating most grains is very helpful.

I just want to thank Earthclinic and everyone who shared their stories because your stories really helped me. I was bleeding continuously since late January 2012 and as of yesterday it stopped all together. I really believe Spirit lead me to this website. I figured out, via symptom list, 1 month ago that I was deficient in magnesium and iodine. I was diagnosed hypothyroid about 3 years ago. I was also briefly diagnosed with being Vit D deficient and was prescribed 5000IU of D3 for 2 weeks until the doctor ruled my levels to be back to normal.

I think with me being allergic to fish, since birth, and with having to take a short sale on the selling of my home, money loss, that I was unable to eat as much seafood and nuts that I usually wood to make up for it. To make a long story short I bought J. Crows liquid iodine and started supplementation a month and 2 weeks ago, I also suspected that I may have had calcified uterine fibroids so on top of taking geritol pills once a day and 3000mg of Inositol with folic acid, and B-complex I also added 400mg of magnesium citrate 2x per day, and so not only did this save my hair and instead of me going through 2-3 overnight maxi pads per 24 hrs per day I was now down to just 1 overnight maxi pad per day. I have to admit I read this website before around early 2011, when I should have been seeing the signs that my body was in distress, and I thought I would not have to resort to molasses or apple cider vinegar well I'm glad I did.

I made myself a coffee mug full of tea which included water, 2 capfulls of ACV(apple cider vinegar with mother), 1 squeeze of real lemon juice, and 1-2 teaspoonfuls of unsulphured blackstrap molasses. I drank this 2x per day, morning and evening. I know everyone's body is different. I thought due to me being obese that it would take a week or month for me to see results but in my case it took really just the first 2 days by the 3rd day I just drank 1 cup and by the 4th day I decided to only drink it if I saw spotting and I have not. I want to also add that I do suffer with PCOS and a week before I added the J. Crows iodine I also added extra b-6(1 capsule) and zinc supplements(1 25mg tablet) to help my body create progesterone to get me balanced again. For me all of this helped to gradually get my body balanced but the kill shot was definately the BSM, and I was able to do my 40min workouts again. I did research and I had no idea BSM had iodine, iron, potassium and so many other vitamins and minerals our bodies need. *For anyone reading this please listen to your body. Not listening to mine, inspite of genetics, definately was a factor in me becoming hypothyroid and PCOS. * I hope to share again in a few months with news of BFP. Wish me luck.

I want to share a miraculous remedy for delayed periods. In times of anxiety my period just disappears (once for whole 6 months)and this is not good. My doctor gave some pills in order to ovulate, but I just like the natural way better.. A friend of mine, is like a natural remedie expert, and gave me the follow remedy:
Ingredients:
-Smashed Fresh aloe vera leaves (the gel inside)
-Honey (enough)
-Liquor or vodka (2 tbs)
Mix the above ingredients until you have something like a syrup.
Drink just a half glass of it, and in 4 days maximum your period will come. You can drink this mixture once a month in order to regulate your period. It works every time.

I drink Kombucha Tea which I use Apple Cider Vinegar with to balance it.

Also there are many other supplements that are popular like D-Chiro-Inositol.

I also take ______Insulite's PCOS supplement system.

Vitex is a well-known herb for helping and/or black cohosh and crampbark tea. Also a good dose of Advil usually helps :)

Taking the right supplements combined with daily exercise and a low sugar diet will help you loose weight and be able to have children in the future.

So all in all I take ______ PCOS supplement series and D-Chlor-Inositol and Fish Oil. These have helped me loose 40 pounds and get my periods back.

I cannot stress enough, you need to avoid sugar and processed carbs such as bread, potatos, and sweet breads entirely.

Treating your insulin resistance will stop the symptoms you have from growing worse. And if you your doctor doesn't agree, find one who is up to date with the current PCOS research and is not so egotisical to think they know it all.

I would love to know if you've had any further developments on this front. A couple years ago I had myself checked out because I had always had abnormal facial hair (my mom always attributed it to heredity), continual weight loss and gain, irregular periods, etc. But I felt it was something more. An external and internal ultrasound showed that I had ovarian polyps, an earlier stage of PCOS.

At that time I had maintained a healthier lifestyle (diet and exercise) with little processed foods and simple sugars out of habit rather than restriction, which had held the polyps at bay. That has changed within the past year and I have noticed a difference on every front. Spearment tea sounds like a wonderful idea and I would love to give it a go so I am thoroughly interested in your findings.

Spearmint for PCOS Acne

Came across an article stating women with PCOS might benefit from spearmint tea. I went to the nutrition store and bought some organic and starting drinking spearmint tea on Friday afternoon. I wasn't really expecting anything for a few weeks, but I woke up today, Sunday, and my face looks 100% better. It was only about 36 hours and is so improved that it defies logic! One cup in the morning and one at night and I'm SHOCKED at the results. I also bought some high quality spearmint oil and put a few drops in some all natural liquid face cleanser so maybe that had something to do with the almost immediate results... ? Today I have almost no oil, my pores are visibly shrinking, and my skin is healthy looking with a more even tone and a pinkish glow... But not even one single new bump/cyst/eruption/pimple and it is finally smooth again!! My face is covered in the healing blemishes, but those should heal soon and nothing new is coming up. On Saturday I noticed that one bump that has been on my cheek for months had finally gotten bigger. Nothing would come out before, but it wouldn't go away. I guess the spearmint had finally brought it to the surface. I was shocked at how deep and infected it was, but today it is finally healing. It honestly looks like I've had 3-4 months of prescription treatment on my face. I thought I was crazy so I asked my husband to look at my skin and he was visibly shocked and said my skin hasn't looked this good in years. My face has gone from being overly oily to almost oil at all. I'm allergic to moisturizers and I've had to start using organic virgin cold pressed coconut oil again just to make sure my skin is hydrated enough, and it is good for my skin too.

I have PCOS (can't take the pill) and for the past year or so my skin has started breaking out with cystic type acne and my pores have gotten really large. I've never had great skin, but I've always controlled it... With retin-a all through high school and college and then switched to a mild face cleanser and toner of organic apple cider vinegar when I got pregnant with my first child. I usually had one or two pimples every couple of weeks. After my children were born I was even able to just use Lancome products and my face looked really nice. Suddenly, about a year or so ago, I developed a severe facial allergy to sodium and ammonium lauryl sulfates and my skin started breaking out worse than ever before. I went to the dermatologist and she said it was hormonal acne caused by the PCOS so there wasn't much she could do and other than prescribe the pill, which I can't take, but to exercise, lose weight, eat healthier, etc. (gee, thanks. ) Due to my allergies, I had to stay with all natural products and my face just kept getting worse and worse. I went back to my tried and true apple cider vinegar, but it didn't really help. I've tried tea tree oil, violet extract, colloidal silver, oil of oregano, organic virgin coconut oil, you name it and nothing helped at all. (I'm very allergic to benzoil peroxide and any of the OTC acne remedies so I couldn't try them. ) I'm in my mid 30s and I looked like a 15 y. O. Boy. It has been so horrible!! Today I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and I just hope it keeps on this same path of healing!!!!

Spearmint is supposed to help regulate hormones and for women with PCOS that is the key. No wonder nothing helped as it really was hormonal acne. I doubt this would work at all for women without hormone issues and men probably shouldn't try it, or maybe try the spearmint oil added to a face cleanser... But in less than 36 hours my skin looks 100% better and I couldn't be happier with the results!!! I'm sticking with this and hoping it continues to improve. Maybe it will even help with other PCOS issues... Only time will tell. I'll post back if anything changes. Good luck to all!!!!

Hi Lara... Perhaps the easiest way to cure PCOS is to take lugol's iodine orally. Here is a broadcast by Dr Flechas from the Iodine Project which describes the many successful outcomes in people who have had this problem

http://curezone.com/ig/i.asp?i=21730

This is a one hour audio broadcast where Dr Flechas also describes and covers how he has cured hypothyroidism, PCOS, Fibrocystic breast disease, diabetes, varicose veins, obesity etc using lugol's iodine.

And here is another extract from another research article by Dr Flechas on the use of oral lugol's iodine to help cure PCOS:

Iodine deficiency may cause the ovaries to develop cysts , nodules and scar tissue. At its worse this ovarian pathology is very similar to that of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). As of the writing of this article I have five PCOS patients. The patients have successfully been brought under control with the use of 50 mg of iodine per day. Control with these patients meaning cysts are gone, periods every 28 days and type 2 diabetes mellitus under control.

Source: http://www.optimox.com/pics/Iodine/IOD-10/IOD_10.htm

So the dosage of iodine needed per day would be 50 mgs (8 drops of 5% lugols iodine) per day in a glass of water in split doses. According to Dr Flechas, this normally heals the PCOS problem within about 6 months.

Hi, I don't know about Apple Cider Vinegar for pcos but I was diagnosed with pcos some 7 years ago. Thank God I have two kids now. First one on clomid and the second one three years later on mega vitamins. This is my recommendation - remove all sugar from your diet at least for the period you are trying for baby (refined sugar, sodas, bread, cakes, rice, potatoes etc) you will notice your periods becoming regular, also take mega doses of vitamin C (up to 1000mg daily) also take magnesium. After ovulation add Vitamin B6 to help prevent miscarriage. Good luck.

Hello, My name is Sharon, just turned 34. I was diagnosed with PCOS 1 1/2 yrs ago. Don't know how long I've had it without knowing but I suspected that I've had it for yrs without knowing. (Thank GOD for private doctors) Anyway, I suffered with High Blood Pressure, against the doctor's advice I refused to be on medication for the rest of my life… I've always had irregular period and terrible acne problems, and yoyo weight problems. Something was wrong but regular doctors would always diagnose the symptoms with something else.

3 yrs ago, I was introduced to a few medical missionaries who counseled me about my lifestyle, Nutrition, Water intake, Exercise, etc…. I sat there for what seemed forever and at the end of that session I walk out of that place 100% Vegan. I went cold turkey!! (Family members thought I was crazy until they saw the results for themselves) I did everything they told me to; which was to simply take BETTER care of myself.

As I continued to administer these new found ways of healthy living, for the first time in my life I started to get my period every 28 days. I lost 18lbs, which brought me to my normal weight for my height and age. Not only did I feel more energetic because of my anemia problem but my Blood pressure is now under control.

Hence, I decided to become a medical missionary because of the unbelievable result I got. I am now helping others to live a healthier lifestyle and in the process diseases are being cured; And it's all due to the one who created us. I will willingly help anyone who is suffering and need help especially with type 2 diabetes. My email address is dhealthlaws(at)gmail.com

Hi, regarding the hair loss from PCOS, I am on Metformin, Spirinolactone & Yaz for insulin control and androgen blockers. This probably helped a bit in my hair loss around my face, but I added Saw Palmetto Capsules 450mg, 2 in the morning, and 2 at night to my routine and it made a big difference, I don't shed excessively or lose so much hair like before, now I shed what is normal like other people. Just wanted to share that with you to give you ideas. The Saw Palmetto is super cheap and you can get it at Walmart and other places that sell vitamins. Hope it helps. I just started with the Apple Cider Vinegar in hopes it will regulate my insulin. My weight spiked recently and I didn't get my period so hopefully the ACV will help.

In 2010, I was having cystic cramps and did not know it. Cramps all the time, very painful for months. After going to the doctor and trying a few medicines they gave me (which only made my emotions worse - like bi polar extremes worse - and nothing helped the pain), I decided to try chaste tree berry. It got rid of the cramps almost immediately. I also did not have my cycle for nearly a year due to undiagnosed PCOS. I began taking this and after about 2 months I got my cycle. Then I've had it regular ever since. I haven't been taking it as regularly now, but I haven't had any pain return and if my menstrual doesn't come I take it again for a few weeks and it comes back.

Also, I noticed that when I have too much soy products the cramps begin to return- if I keep taking my vitex, they aren't nearly as severe as they were.

I am so happy with the results of this herb. Now if only I could find a good cure for the hirsutism which seems to just be getting worse.

atkins is like a cult..... Open mindedness people? I saw a doctor who runs an atkins diet club on a weekly basis. It included high fat, high protein, very few veg and the only fruit I was allowed was bananas. So im not entirely sure where your information is coming from. It also advocates the Atkins bars and diet sodas etc... Which are full of chemicals and sweetners. Quite unhealthy and actually gave me cholestrol problems, and im only 22! If you google atkins, it says all of the above again and again.

So really, saying someone has no clue is a bit rough, you may just personally have had a good experience, but I think you need to realise that its not for everyone, and clearly there are variations on the topic.

Hello,
Good luck with your weight loss. Below are some things that helped me tremendously with loosing about 80 lbs.

Green veggie juice every morning, made fresh from celery, cucmber, parsley, ginger and lemon.

Increased consumption of sea veggies like kelp, dulce, etc.

Coconut butter and coconut oil in cooking, as well as 2 tablespoons every morning.

Elimination of sugar, white and starchy substances.

Increase of good fats like avocado, raw nuts as well as coconut products.

45 mins of brisk walk.

Hey. 2 years ago I gave birth to my beautiful little boy. Within about 3 months of having him, I rapidly gained a lot of weight. It was close to 40 kgs! I have also noticed that my hair just wont grow, I have really really terrible acne, and so much body hair! Its so depressing. I am 22 and used to be thin and attractive and get honked at everywhere I went, I havent had a single man even look twice at me in almost 2 years, not even my husband (who has looked elsewhere).

I recently had an ultra-sound as I suspected that I had cystic ovaries, and it turns out I do... Praise the lord! So I went back to my doctor who told me that there is no cure whatsoever besides weight loss, but that PCOS stops you losing weight!!! I pretty much wanted to jump off a cliff. She said I may want to consider lap band surgery to lose the weight, so I decided to search good ole earth clinic instead! Im sitting here with my disgusting cup of Apple Cider Vinegar in the hopes of curing me of my ugliness soon! Will keep you all posted on my progress.

Thanks for the suggestions people, please keep them coming. Its my only hope!
Love Elise

Hello Simplyred,

I bought "organic" apple cider vinegar and began taking it (about 1-2 teaspoons a day) with water. A little over a week later, MY PERIOD CAME!!! I have taken 2 ovulation predictor tests, and unfortunately Im NOT ovulating. Im not sure if its just that my timing is off, but Im just hoping that I begin to ovulate, and that my period comes next month and the months thereon an continue to come regularly like they are supposed to. Let me know how it works for U!! Good Luck!!!

I just have a question for you. First of all I thank you so much for your post, I have pcos and I've tried what seems like everything over the past 5-7 years and nothing has helped it. So now I tried your acv remedy, and now (about a week and a half later) my period comes!!! Im soooo excited, I need to get a ovulation test to see if im ovulating also. Anyway, my question to you is, while on your period do you continue to take the acv or not? Also what is an update to your routine now, or is everything normal?

Thanks in advance for your information.

White Peony Tea
Posted by Shannon (San Antonio, Tx) on 01/21/2010

Thank you for replying. I bought the white peony tea but as of now have not tried it. I went to a naturopath and he gave me a mixture of three teas: dong quai, chaste tree berry and prickley pear root, and told me to take three caps daily of evening primerose oil, garlic, and vitamin E. This I took for four months then didn't take anything else. I simply changed my eating habits and exercised more. All you have to do is avoid all forms of sugars especially those found in milk and alcohol. Avoid gluten and dairy as well. Exercise daily, even it it's just for 10 minutes as long as its CONSISTENT! I have always taken fish oil tablets and multivitamins as supplements, and I started sleeping before 10 pm and this decreased my stress levels immediately!!! For some reason, stress and pcos go hand-in-hand. Well, I hope that this advice helps. My period has been regular for about a year now and my last two ultrasounds taken six months apart have been normal and without visible cysts. When I was diagnosed my ovaries were twice their size and full of cysts. My doctor was amazed on how well my condition has been controlled. I told him I was just happy I didn't take the clomid and glucophage he had originally prescribed! I am almost certain that anyone with this condition can overcome it if the follow the above advice. I know I did! There is hope out there ladies!

Hi I am 22. I have an illness called PCOS and it causes me to have a lot of trouble with everyday life. One really bad part about it is my acne, its on my back and face. I've tried everything. Over the counter acne meds and doctor's have given me things to use, all making it worse, and really dry. Then I heard about apple cider Vinegar. I was told to poor 1 cup of the ACV in my bath water and lay in it and take a cotton ball and dab the ACV on my face. I did. The VERY next morning my face looked so much better and my back to! I am convinced so now I am also drinking a small bit of it! I feel a lot better and look a lot better.

Also, This is personal but it may help someone so its worth it. When I was 21 I suffered from a miscarriage and Due to that, I suffered (for 9 Months) from a bacterial infection. I took all meds, pills and creams, for that to, then one day I cried to my doctor telling her nothing was giving me relief and my doctor told me just to use the ACV, After a week of bathing in it, I've not had one since.

Just go to your closest Herbal nutrition store, they should be able to recommend a brand (they don't allow us to post brands here). Just make sure it has a standardized amount of agnuside or you don't know if your really getting anything beneficial.

I am 43 years old, and years ago had been diagnosed PCOS. I have never been able to ovulate on my own, or have periods without the use of hormones. I started taking ACV for my mild to moderate reflux/heartburn and it has worked great for that. I take about a teaspooon of ____ ACV with a cup of water 1 (rarely 2) times per day. A side effect has been a decrease in stomach bloat, and suddenly, after all those years of fertility treatments, I am ovulating and getting a period regularly. In addition, I see a difference in my hair loss. I absolutely recommend it!!

Diet Changes for PCOS: I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 2000 at the age of 21. I had almost no periods; I was rapidly gaining weight, no fertility, severe acne, facial hair and so on.

Over the years, I have tried diet (but haphazardly) Chaste Berry, and several other herbs ,some exercise, Metformin 2000mg/day for two years, synthetic progesterone to get my periods and none of that has helped. Not even the Metformin which so many people swears by.

By the time I was 27, I realized I had gluten intolerance. I had poor digestion, a large belly and developed psoriasis. Once I eliminated gluten from my diet, I instantly lost inches and my skin cleared up. Over the next several years, I had to clean up my diet even more to improve my digestion, lose more weight and get rid of estrogen dominance that's so common with PCOS.

I eliminated, gluten and most other grains including "healthy" brown rice and corn, sugars except for low GI fruit and occasional palm sugar (lower GI than agave), fruit juice, soy, dairy, processed foods (of course), hydrogenated oils, canola oil, and several other foods.

My diet is rich in green veggies, low GI fruit, green juices, lean protein, nuts, and, good fats (including unprocessed coconut oil). I make sure that 80% of my diet is raw fruits, veggies, and nuts.

Besides diet, I take supplements including kelp. Though my thyroid tests always came back normal, I may have had subclinical hyperthyroid because when I added 12mg of kelp per day, I started ovulating on CD 15 for the first time ever. I have been taking 12mg kelp daily for 8 months and my body haven't skipped a beat. When you look for kelp in the store, it usually comes in 225mcg tablets. You will have to do the conversion to get the right amount.

I went from a size 14 to a 6 in less than a year and I have kept it off. I think between diet, regular exercise, the usual suspects of supplements (omega 3, B complex, etc) and kelp has been my answer to PCOS.

I'm 21 and was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago and currently taking birth control pills to bring back a period I haven't had for about three years now. So I finally found out about this site talking to a friend because I want to have kids soon but due to infertility because PCOS its kind of hard. So anyway to get to my question, I'm really excited about trying the ACV, BSM and the OP but I'm wanting to know how do you mix it all together or am I suppose to do everything separate? Please please give me some feedback so I can start right away. And will it also help me loose weight as well as getting pregnant and getting my period back?

I bought a box on the internet of about 100 tea packets. I was drinking about 1 cup of tea per day. I started noticing a change after about a week or two, but i am not sure how it would work with others.

I am currently taking a break from it. After taking the tea, and regulating my periods, I discovered I had Endometriosis (through surgery as well)--so I am on treatment for that as well--trying the doctors way first before my own. But i still recommend the TEA!

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was eighteen. I hadn't had my period in seven months by the time I went to the doctor. He put me on birthcontrol so that I would get my period. It worked, I did get my period. Three years later when I decided to go off...my period disappeared too. After a year of barely having periods again, I talked to a nutritionalist who recommended chaste tree berry (VITEX). I got my period three weeks after starting it and my period started coming regularly at 31 days. I went off of it after ten months and my cycle has shortened to 29 days. I have only missed it twice since then. Once was about six months after going off of it. My nutritionist said that I went off too soon and that I should stay on it for eighteen months to make sure my hormones were completely balanced. The second time, about three and a half months ago was way better. I missed my period because I am pregnant. Chaste tree berry also helps treat infertility :) which affects most women with PCOS!

I am 28 yrs old and a mother of two children.I have been on antidepressants since I was 17 because I am very emotional sometimes with fatigue. I was diagnosed with pcos after I had been dieting and exercising for over a year with no results. After stopping my hormones I started to get excessive acne, hair loss, no sex drive, and tiredness.

I doctor did a pcos workup and all my labs were normal. I was referred to a specialist that thought all the symptoms were in my head and thought I needed a personal trainer. I had only a little facial hair, no fertility trouble, only 25 lbs overweight, and my labs were normal. After aguing with the doctor for 30 minutes he did an ultrasound to 'humor' me. I had 15 cysts on one side. I was rx'd metformin, which made me extremely ill.
I had to stopped taking it because I couldn't work on the med. Carbs!!! Thats the problem. Our bodies were not meant to eat all this processed food. If you want your symptoms to go away you need to change your lifestyle. Exercising and a low glycemic diet is the key. I lost 45 lbs in a year and a half. I weigh less now than in high school. Once you train your body to need the right foods you stop the vicious 'bad'carb craving cycle. You crave carbs because your body is not coverting them into energy, they are being stored as fat, which makes you tired and wanting to eat more 'bad' carbs.

Other than a low carb diet I am a firm believer in hollistic cures. There are herbal supp that can keep your sugar from spiking and destroys it before its stored. Which is also important with pcos.1) Fenugreek- 1 capsule 1 to 3 times daily 2)Gymnema Sylvestre-400mg, also if dissolved on your tongue can keep you form tasting sugar.
I work in the medical field and believe no one, no one knows your body better than you!!

Although, it is great that you are finding success with the modification of your diet. In the future when you post regarding something such as the Atkins diet, maybe you should do a bit of research first. First of all vegetables are a main component of the Atkins diet, fruit is also added back in in stages. Atkins is NOT a meat, cheese and egg diet in any way. I am a firm advocate of the Atkins diet b/c I have been eating this way for years and I have not felt or looked better in my life. So be careful in quoting something that you have no clue about. You are actually in fact on the atkins diet as that is exactly what it is about.

Green Tea Extract

This is a remedy that I have researched and am only just beginning to try. As we all know, PCOS is a syndrome that presents itself in different forms in every woman. For instance, according to my doctors, although I have cysts on my ovaries and have weight issues, my periods are very regular, progesterone is fine, I ovulate each month, BUT I do have elevated testosterone (which causes the hormonal body hair, and in some women, baldness, and acne).

I looked into the elevated testosterone levels, and found that not only does excess body fat EXACERBATE testosterone levels (best solution - reduce body fat), but the KEY to reducing testosterone could be in ELEVATING your SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin) levels.

For those of you who have had a thorough blood test for your hormones, you will note that Doctors mainly talk about your Oestrogen, Progesterone and your Testosterone Levels. But I suggest you look at your test and note the levels of your SHBG. SHBG is a glycoprotein in your blood that BINDS the FREE ANDROGENS in your blood stream. Free Androgens are the Male Hormones that are floating in your bloodstream that cause the male pattern baldness, hormonal hair, acne and other androgenous conditions. If your Testosterone is high, more than likely your SHBG is in the lower levels. Basically, there is not enough of the SHBG protein to catch these little fellows that cause all this damage.

I researched how to elevate SHBG naturally, and it seems that GREEN TEA is the best solution. BUT since we all can't drink countless cups of Green Tea to elevate these levels, it would be a wonderful idea to take a natural supplement of GREEN TEA EXTRACT. Check with your health food store or pharmacy, you should be able to get it in capsule or tablet form.

Along with increasing your SHBG levels, Green Tea Extract may also serve to speed up your metabolism, and also burn body fat. If you have PCOS and are experiencing baldness or thinning of your hair, this may be the best long term "INTERNAL" solution to the problem.

My other suggestion is to stay away from hormonal contraceptions at all costs. They do more damage than good to your already sensitive hormone levels. Synthetic hormones are not easily assimilated in our bodies, and therefore, our body reacts adversely. The pill may be the cause of greater infertility than you realise.

The final note for women with PCOS is to remember that PCOS is linked to DIABETES, SYNDROME X/INSULIN RESISTANCE. The majority of women with PCOS have been found to have a history of Diabetes in their families, or come from a culture where diabetes is prevalent. The key for all of us therefore, is to reduce our consumption of simple sugars and any food that elevates our blood sugar levels too quickly (high GI foods). Higher protein, lower PROCESSED carb diets work well for us. Increase your raw vegetable and fruit consumption. Also increase your essential fatty acid intake (i.e. good oils - extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil etc).

These changes will go a very long way to ensuring greater fertility, better balance in your hormones, and long term prevention of heart disease and diabetes.

Good luck everyone. If you wish to email me with questions, you are more than welcome to.
