Effective Natural Earache Remedies for Pain Relief

Oil Pulling
Posted by X-microbiologist (Right Here, Usa) on 11/18/2017

I currently have one of the worst ear infections ever, -and I am usually not prone to them! Being a diehard fan of Earthclinic (and the fact that it was 2 in the morning when my symptoms kicked into high gear) I read through and tried nearly every remedy listed with only marginal success. It was maddening! So I looked at a diagram of the ear and realized that every "Cure" I'd tried involved placing salt/alchohol/vinegar/oil etc. INTO the ear itself, hoping that the medicinal agent would get into the problem area and fix things. But if the problem was lower down -say lower middle ear or even in my eustachian tube, that pathway is unlikely to be effective. And believe me, it wasnt effective, -I was hurting continuously!

That's when I thought about oil pulling. The mouth is yet another pathway into the ear and, when using a truly antibacterial oil like coconut or garlic-infused olive oil, should be relatively quick and effective way to clear up deep ear infections.

So I figured I'd give it a try, -certainly it was better than waiting for morning! I took Coconut oil and put in a little natural sea salt, placing a tablespoon of the concoction in my mouth. Then, I laid down to further facilitate getting the stuff to my tubes (you dont have to do this, but I was also exhausted, so I had double incentive! ) After five seconds, I finally had sustained, sweet relief! The pressure subsided, no more pain, -I'm still a little clogged, but I'm decidedly feeling BETTER! I swished for about 15 minutes overall. I'm also going to alternate the salted coconut oil with garlic-infused olive oil to make sure I don't have any little infectious nasties left. But I just wanted to post my success here because I read several other posts from people who were in the same boat as I was last night, -tired, desperate and out of luck. In fact, if I could just make a blanket recommendation, maybe trying the oil-pulling FIRST before putting anything into our ears? Membranes are delicate things and once they're damaged, it tends to be permanent. Oil pulling is a pretty non-invasive procedure to try FIRST if you've got a raging ear ache and it wont hurt you in any way. And, if it doesn't work, you've ruled out the lower tubes of your ears as infection sites, -so win/win!

Anyway, -God's blessings to all! I hope this is a help to others!

Salt Solution or Warm Water

I mean, you can add some salt to kill germs, so either warm salt water or warm water too. Same results. You can use the warm water directly from faucet.

Salt Solution or Warm Water

I couldn't believe it. My son sometimes had some earache because of congestion-cold. My son had his first earache in december 31 of 2014. I went to the pediatrician, they gave me amoxillicin, which it still on my fridge, I never used it. We used salt water, a safer solution according to my hubby, you put some salt with water in a dropper, 2 drops that you leave for 10 seconds. It worked fine, I don't remember all the details sorry, I know that I was surprised by the results. The child slept well. With years, and after another episode of earache, I started to read on this site about warm olive oil, and asking myself if it wasn't the warmth that act. So, I heated the dropper, so it was warm salt water (I didn't use olive oil). This one was quick. The pain was gone after 10-15 seconds.

I read on this site somewhere (or on another site), that earache can be because of pressure, and you need to hear a noise. So when I put the warm-salt water on my son ear, I'm asking him, if he hear 'tac-tac' and he hears this noise. I can't explain the organ or whatever process, maybe his ear opens. I have no idea.

This week, he has some ear infection, 3 times, he is a little congested too. He came from school with a an earache. I started to give him the first time, warm-salt water, it works quickly fine. But what is suprising, is once I forgot to put the salt. I heat the water, and use the dropper. As usual, he hear 'tac-tac...tac' on his ear, after less than one minute he is fine. If your child doesn't feel better, add 2 more drops. Don't forget to remove the excess of water with some paper, by tilting the head of the child. I'm so pissed off by the medical community. Warm water, and that works, you can add water to kill germs too. Try it, it's quick, take maximum 1 minute. And give your child a role to tell you if he hears a noise, he will be happy to help. I think that earache due to wax build-up won't be better with this method, it's only my guess. My son has an earache when he has a cold-congestion.

This site after my bible site is my favorite site on all the internet since 2011.

First of all I like to thank those who have put up this solution for swimmer ear. I am using this solution and I got immediate result.

I have added 90% RUBBING ALCOHOL and 10% WHITE VINEGAR, I am using small nasal spray bottle for spraying it inside my ear canal and outer ear and all around my ear, after 1-2 min I clean my ear from inner and outer portion of my ear with cotton . Within 3 days I got the result. My ear which was deformed, it came back to its normal. I was having Ear Pimple and skin rashes all his problem got resolve.

My swimmer ear infection was extended to outer ear skin till my half face. So for this I have taken an antibiotic called "Flucloxacillin 500mg" empty stomach 2hr before food one table in a day for a week. This helped me to get my face recover for infection. I also some time use ear drops from the pharmacy when I feel itching in ear.

Once again I like to thank all those people who have share their experience for this swimmer ear infection.

Keep your ear clean and healthy and swim well.

What I have done is take out the oil from two garlic cloves and dilute with olive oil and take a cotton ball and put one or two drops in my ears and bingo. I then put the piece of cotton and leave for a while or over night. Ear infections are gone with no antibiotics. It really works.

Rubbing Alcohol and White Vinegar

Try a lower content of isopropyl alcohol like 70% or try to increase the amount of vinegar. The 95% alcohol is typically something we cannot get easily in the USA and that may a bit too strong for your ears.

Boric Acid and Vinegar
Posted by Sophia (Indiana) on 05/13/2017

Boric acid really helped me with my earache! I heated up 4 oz distilled water (boil tap water to sterilize if you don't have distilled), and added 1 TBSP of Boric acid as well as 1 TBSP of vinegar (I used organic ACV but white vinegar would work too). I mixed until the boric acid crystals dissolved and let it cool. Then, using a clean eyedropper, I put 2-3 drops in the affected ear, 2 times daily. Laid my head down on its side and let it sit in there for 10-15 minutes before putting in a cotton ball and sitting back to give it time to work. The first dose took away the worst of the pain. Today I woke up with no ear pain, at all! But I'm going to keep using until the pressure goes away.

I also made a solution for my eyes, since they always ache when I get a sinus/ear infection. The recipe for that is 1/8 tsp to 8 oz distilled or sterilized water. I only keep these solutions for a day or two and then throw them out. Best to make a fresh batch when you need them!

In reply to Steph C. (Missouri),

Your method also eliminates the chance of being burned by the potential for direct contact with the garlic clove which on its own is quite strong and capable of burning your ear.

Garlic for Earache:

This is what I do for my kids. Garlic clove crushed and warmed in olive oil. Once the oil smells garlicky I let it cool a bit and then place in the ear and have them lay down with a cotton ball in the ear for as long as they can (usually lasts 10 minutes before they get impatient). I usually do both ears for prevention. I will say I have only ever had to do this application once per complaint because it is so effective. My kids are very compliant with this treatment, also, because they know it is fast relief.

Tea Tree Oil, Coconut Oil

I've been suffering with a recurring ear infection for 2 years now, had my 4th one most recently and in the past I've had to go to urgent care to get topical antibiotic ear drops to cure it. I'm out in CA for work and my insurance does not cover doctors here, and I know the garlic oil trick has never worked in the past. I came across tea tree oil being diluted in VIRGIN coconut oil as they are both, anti bacterial, anti viral and anti fungal trying to get ride of the infection. 3 days on this treatment and I can confidently say I am cured. I will keep taking the following dosage 15 drops of tea tree oil diluted in a tablespoon of coconut oil 3Xs a day for 7 days.

I saw results the first day and I was able to sleep without any pain in my ear. I'm so glad I don't have to keep going to urgent care for this, as this is a recurring problem since I produce too much wax in my ears and therefore end up getting frequent ear infections as a result.

Each time I have used the 50% alcohol 50% vinegar my ears have hurt for days afterwards like a burning feeling. I am using 95% alcohol from chemist and white vinegar. Why is this happening?

How did this go? Did your ear burn badly or did it heal the infection? I just accidently poured undilute garlic oil in my ear and the burn was bad! Worried I did something stupid..

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Thenomad (Usa) on 01/21/2016

He mentions his ear drum was ruptured, I think the obvious conclusion is that he ruptured it with the q-tip and then the sudden pain from the hydrogen peroxide hitting his ruptured ear caused the problem. You must be sure it's not ruptured before you put anything in your ear (alcohol, peroxide, ois)

She's not lying. A nurse told me to make sure to not put anything (she was referring to water--but it's still the same principle) cold in your ear because it could make you pass out and/or vomit. Always make sure that whatever you put in is warm.

I think you work for the AMA and you made this story up to try and discredit a valid natural treatment.

Supplements

I think what he meant was that the liquid from the neti pot, on its travel from one nostril to the other, would (or could, depending on how it's done) pass by the entrance to the Eustachian tube, and some would go down that way. It would feel as though it's "in the ear", but it's in the middle ear. It then passes back out via the Eustachian tube into the throat. That's my approximate understanding of what's going on here.

I don't think it's all that easy to get fluid into the Eustachian tube using this method, but I believe it's possible.

Putting homemade Colloidal Silver in my ear once or twice a day got rid of my ear infection I believe. I just made it sloppily at home in mineral water. Not much else to say, but chalk up a success! :)

Vitamin E

I used garlic and HP for ear ache and never helped. In fact these 2 caused more pain than earache itself.

I use now, when my ear hurts, vitamin E in gel form and squeeze in my ear hole and pain stops right away. My family dr used to prescribe me antibiotics every time for earache, but I realized I start to have ear ache every time due to acidity in my body (candida). Thanks.

Olive Oil, Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil

I have been having ear pain for a few days, and the doctor said it was allergies/sinus. In the meantime, I looked online and found a remedy that really works for me, but the pain does come back after a while, so I just reapply the ointment. 1/4 c. olive oil, 10 drops each of tree tea oil and lavender oil. Rub around ear, NOT inside. So I mixed all these ingredients into a jar and just keep using it. In the meantime I will look here to see how to get rid of these seasonal allergies.

Garlic Oil Recipe

My son had a terrible earache. I gave him some OTC pain medicine because he had to go to work. Then I began a batch of garlic oil. When he came in later, I put a few drops of the garlic oil into each ear. He has been fine ever since. I have used this oil in the past for ear pain. Usually I use it at least once or twice a day. Used with a warm rice sock, pain will usually be resolved quite quickly. I believe if you have a ruptured ear drum, it is not recommended to use anything in the ear. In that case, the oil could be rubbed under and around the ear.

Recipe for Garlic Oil

1/2 cup freshly minced garlic cloves

1/2 cup olive oil

1/4 cup extra virgin coconut oil

Mix together and let sit on the counter for ten days. Shake three times a day. After ten days, strain out the garlic with a coffee filter. Label and date and STORE IN REFRIGERATOR! This way it will last all fall and winter. I will leave it out for days at a time when treating someone with an acute condition. Perhaps adding some vitamin E oil would help it to last even longer.

I usually store it in a glass bottle with an eyedropper. I put the glass bottle into a mug of hot water for 5 minutes before using it, so the oil will be warm in the oil. That feels better than cold oil, especially for children.

I didn't have ten days to wait to treat my son. So, I strained out a little bit of the oil after a few hours. It will get stronger and stronger over the course of ten days.

I also use this oil on the chest and/or back for a cough. It will make the person being treated smell terribly of garlic, but it works. For a small child, I rub it into the bottoms of the feet. It works VERY well for a stubborn cough and I love that I can treat a child without even waking him up at night.

Lalitha Thomas, author of, "Ten Essential Herbs, " from whom I got the original recipe, will use it internally for a cough or as a natural antibiotic. (1 teaspoon per adult dose, equivalent of 1 garlic clove.) She does not use the coconut oil, but I like to use it as it also has anti-viral properties.

Where I live, cold and flu season are around the corner. It is a good time to be sure to have Garlic Oil made up ahead of time!

Pau d'Arco
Posted by Natalie (Washington, DC) on 08/21/2014
★★★★★

Caught an ear infection while I was on vacation in Mexico. Had to do something with swimming and the water I'm assuming. Well I had a flight to catch back home in a few hours the evening that I came down with the most excruciating ear pain of my life. Had originally brought several anti fungal herbs with me because I was combating a candida infection in my gut. There was no way for me to see a doctor and get prescription without missing my flight. So out of desperation I was ready to take the plunge on putting drops of the Pau d'Arco tincture I had with me, I also knew that Pau d'Arco is anti fungal and anti bacterial, a VERY potent one.

To my surprise it worked like a charm, the pain subsidized by half and was able to sleep through the night and catch my 4 am flight. I kept putting in about 10 drops every two hours until the pain completely disappeared in about 4 days. Once I got home I got on the net and read that Pau d'Arco is in fact a very strong bacteria and fungal inhibitor and the best way to actually use it when combating a ear infection is by warming up a little bit of olive oil and adding some Pau d'Arco (tincture form, they have water and alcohol) drops in the warm oil in order to separate the water and alcohol content from the herb. That way you get the Pau d'Arco drops without water and alcohol which may aggravate the infection.

I was so angry that this had happened the last evening I was on vacation but was very grateful to not have been seen by a doctor after the Pau d'Arco had worked. It was in a matter of days that I was able to gain my hearing back and no more pain. I know the harmful effects of antibiotics, I went through hell with C.diff, a resistant bug I came down after I took a course of antibiotics. I am blessed to know that we have many other options besides the pharmaceutical drugs that cause much harm.
