Low body temperature treatments range from lifestyle changes to dietary supplements and herbal treatments. Increasing one’s level of exercise as well as diet often has a direct effect on supporting the overall body temperature. Additionally, certain vitamins and minerals as well as natural herbs can boost the core temperature and render better health.

What is Low Body Temperature?

The accepted body temperature is 98.6 degrees; however, several individuals experience a standard temperature lower than this standard. While a decrease in core temperature is becoming more common, a subaverage temperature is a sign of poor health. Temperature is a direct indicator of metabolism, so low temperature means a low or slow metabolism. In addition to decreased functioning of the metabolism, several other issues may result including poor digestion, food intolerance, gastrointestinal distress, abnormal urination patterns, mood swings, irritability, skin disorders, unhealthy hair and nails, sleep problems, fatigue, susceptibility to illness and weight gain. Any reading below 97.8 is considered a low temperature and is likely indicative of low metabolism and comorbid issues, such as low thyroid symptoms, kidney issues and others.

Lifestyle Treatment for Varying Temperature

Decreased metabolism and other health conditions are often a result of lifestyle choices. Increasing one’s activity level, changing the diet and limiting toxin exposure are natural ways to stabilize the metabolism and internal thermometer. Completing vigorous workouts such as interval training and weight lifting, eating high protein and low carb foods and avoiding toxic products are three of the most effective ways to boost overall health.

Herbal Treatments for Subaverage Core Temperature

Herbal treatments have also been proven effective in treating the low temperature phenomena. Fresh ginger, cinnamon bark and fennel are three of the most effective natural temperature stimulants. Each of these supplements is easily accessible and safe for treating any number of ailments.

Ginger is known for its thermogenic properties, making it the perfect supplement to increase temperature and revitalize health. As ginger is digested, it naturally elevates the body’s temperature and increases metabolic functioning. Ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties and is an antioxidant, so it helps treat other health conditions as well.

Cinnamon Bark

Cinnamon bark supports overall health in a variety of ways including maintaining glycemic balance and regulating blood sugar metabolism, both of which are related to internal temperature. This supplement also detoxifies the liver and lymphatic tissues and aids in digestion.

Fennel also speeds up metabolism and breaks down fat in the body, assisting in treating low thyroid symptoms as well as the core condition. Rich in potassium and calcium, fennel delivers essential nutrients for overall health.

Low temperature is often a symptom of other conditions rather than an actual disease. Nevertheless, natural treatment options increase the body temperature and boost overall health.

I've had low body temp for 10 years - ever since I had a benign tumor removed from my pituitary. My "normal" temp is 96.2 - 96.7. 2 full degrees below normal. I've tried many things - sauna (purchased my own), iodine, vitamins / minerals, various herbs, GAPS diet, etc. The only thing that really helped was iodine but it was always temporary and might add a degree at best.

I happened upon a book by Anthony Williams called Medical Medium Cleanse To Heal. I decided I wanted to cleanse my liver for reasons other than my temperature. Honestly I've given up trying to correct it so I rarely think about it except when I get cold in conditions where I shouldn't be cold. Anyway, he often referred to juicing celery at the start of his book so I decided to begin with that while I continue to read it. That was 7 days ago that I started.

3 days ago I noticed I was feeling really warm all day. Decided to take my temperature and it's 98.6, three days in a row. I've never approached 98.6 except after sitting in a hot tub for 30 minutes. Then it goes away within an hour. I'm cautiously optimistic and very excited.

I have not changed my diet - the only thing I've done is juice a full bunch of celery every morning on an empty stomach. It's important not to add ANYTHING to the celery juice, and it needs to be juiced not blended. An immediate benefit I'm noticing is I don't feel tired. It's been so long since I haven't been chronically tired.

Its been a couple years from your post. Is your temp still normal? Are you still juicing celery?

I wanted to add some information about raw coconut oil and low body temperature. I've successfully used it to help raise my body temperature. Although I do use it in my cooking, I also put it in my nose, tilt my head back and let it drain into my sinuses and throat. I then add some to each ear. I do this before bed and I seem to sleep better and my body temperature stays higher than it was. I also use it on my skin after my shower at night.

I've noticed that eating it is good, but doing this protocol regularly helps to keep my energy levels up without having to ingest it regularly and my feet and hands are no longer cold. By usiing it on the skin or in the nose and ears, it is still being absorbed transdermally but going immediately into your blood stream without having to be processed by the liver. If your liver is congested, ingesting it won't bring the same benefits as transdermal absorption does.

Also, adding good bacteria in the form of fermented foods such as Kombucha, raw organic kefir, raw organic honey, etc. will help to keep the inflammation at bay!

I have been using coconut oil for a week now and I feel less cold. I have more energy and am full all the time, so less cravings. I purchased Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from Vitamin Shoppe. I love the taste and have replaced vegetable oil in cooking with CO. Also I have 1 tsp in the morning and sometimes 1 in the evening. It is a wonderful find to protect myself against cold. Just take care of eliminating your other fat/carbs in your diet, else it is likely to make you gain weight.

How long did you have low temp before trying this. And how long did it take to work? Thanks

I read somewhere that one of the advantages of coconut oil is that it does not get processed through the liver. That is why it is so beneficial.

Yesterday after a vigorous bike ride my temperature dropped to 92 degrees, taken with two different thermometers. After awhile it went back up slowly to 98.3. My temperature is normal otherwise, even first thing in the morning. I am curious to see if anyone else has a severe drop in temperature after hard exercise.

Today I worked in the yard for an hour digging and weeding in the hot sun (very hot day), and upon taking my temperature afterwards it was 93.5 under the arm. I also feel unwell afterwards. Isn't temperature supposed to go up in hot weather? Has anyone else had the same experience?

Yes, it happened to me today. My temperature is usually at 97.6 (not good, I know). I was feeling decent and was in a good mood. I walked around the house for a bit and tried on a couple of outfits and suddenly my eyes started to feel heavy, my dark circles got worse, my legs started to hurt and my body temp went down to 96. I'm going to try the coconut oil treatment. I rarely can exercise because I get so tired for the rest of the week.

Iodine, Tyrosine, Selenium, Iron

My sister had very low body temperature (about 35.3oC), very cold hands and feet, felt cold all the time, she started taking Tyrosine, Iodine, Selenium and plant-iron, and now is much warmer (36.7).

Here how increased her temperature,

- Tyrosine 750mg x2 daily (morning and afternoon) (1,500mg total /day)

- iosol Iodine drops. 3-7 drops per day (in the morning) /day.

- Selenium, 200mcg /day.

- Garden of Life plant-iron. 1-3 capsules per day.(might have molasses when runs out, avoid regular iron supplements. Rainbow light plant-iron or Garden of life iron are the only 2 good ones I know of.)

Low iron can cause low body temperature and also block thyroid function when iron levels are low.

But check you are indeed low in iron before taking iron because you don't need it if you are not low in it.

Selenium is very important to take when taking iodine. It is such a wonderful nutrient.

Here's a comment which mentions iron increasing temperature...

"After only two days... I had more energy and my body temperature started to rise. Now after 3 weeks, I continue to have increased energy, I am sleeping better, and my hands and feet are warm for the first time in 30 years."

These comments for Tyrosine mention it helped to increase body temperature...

"I use this (Tyrosine) to help with thyroid function. When I use it, my low body temp (~96) goes up to 97.5 and higher, a sure sign that the thyroid is functioning better. L-tyrosine is great"

"(Tyrosine) Worked instantly to improve energy, metabolism, and increased my body temperature. Great for hypothyroidism."

Here's a comment mentioning Improved body tempreature from iosol iodine drops...

"One of the best products I have used for improved thyroid and increasing body warmth. One day I checked my temperature in the morning it was 35 celsius. I got up took 10 drops of Iosol and within an hour it was 36 degrees C. Very quick results. Need to be careful not to take too much as you can get racing heart and over energized, uncomfortable. I gave it to my husband who has ADD and he noticed more ability to focus, remember and think more clearly. Go to the dose which helps and reduce if over-stimulation occurs."

Here's another comment for iosol iodine drops...

"I use to be on medication for my thyroid. Now that I have found Iosol ll I no longer need medication. And my hair stopped falling out. I am not as irritable, and my body temperature is more even."

Good health
