Hiccup Remedies

Raw Onions

My hubby had a bad case of hiccups 16 years ago. He was heading out to the car to put our lunch stuff away, carrying an onion in a baggie, he rolled the baggie down and took a bite or two. The hiccups were immediately gone and he didn't get another one for 14 years (seriously). At work one day (about two years ago) he had a hiccup and was getting ready to eat his sandwich, took out some of the onion and chewed it up. The hiccups did not continue. This morning I was making his steak sandwich and hiccuping from the fridge to the table, etc. I decided to take a couple slices of the onion and - voila! Not another hiccup. I'd heard him talk about it for years, but until today I never tried it. I'm a true believer now.

Squeezing the Thumb

I have been studying accupuncture and discovered that by squeezing the thumb hiccups disappear. My dad is 89 and when he gets them it works everytime. If it doesn't try squeezing (on each side of the nail base) other fingertips and see what happens. It sounds weird, however it does work!

Take a slice of lemon, cover it with sugar and (liquid) bitters... Then gnaw on it for a minute or two and the hiccups are gone!

When my toddler son has hiccups which is almost weekly I dip my wet finger in a homemade blend of sea salts and place in his mouth. I chase it with a drink of water and he is good almost instantaneously.

Drink Water With Spoon in It

Hiccup Remedy:

Hold your breath for as long as you can whilst pinching your right ear hard all the time.

I laughed when I was told this but I tried it and wow, same reaction from everyone I tell but they try it and it's never failed yet. I recall the pinching of the ear releases chemicals, sounds nuts, try it.

Drink Upside Down

The drink upside down technique for hiccups worked amazingly well. My husband was suffering from recurring hiccups for 10 minutes due to fullness. He didn't eat a lot, but felt very full. I suggested this remedy. He hiccuped through the first 2 sips and then completely stopped on the fourth. He said he felt like he was on the verge of hiccuping and took a mouthful, bent at the waist and swallowed one more time. He stopped hiccuping completely or feeling like he was going to hiccup. We could not stop laughing - it was unbelievable!

Been doing this all my life! I learnt it in the schoolyard from a classmate! If you can't force a burp, try drinking lots of fizzy drinks.

Drink Water Through Paper Towel

Wouldn't you be ingesting all the chemicals that the paper towel is made of? Be safe. Try raising both arms up and hold it there for a minute next time.

Another yay! Had a bad case of hiccups I took about three gulps of water out of a cup upside down using a straw (I didnt follow one persons post of upper lip on rim of cup) and worked like a charm. Try it. It works! Sara

To get rid of hiccups: Place water in glass and cover lid of glass with a paper towel. Drink water in glass through the paper towel. No more hiccups.

Drink Water With Spoon in It

I have had hiccups all day and tried holding my breath, which stopped the hiccups for a while but then they came back. I also tried drinking water upside down which I found hard to do and it did not work.

Thank goodness for your website! I looked up remedies and was sceptical about the one describing drinking water with a spoon in it but I tried it, making sure to use a big tablespoon and keeping the handle next to my cheek the whole time as I chugged down a big glass of water and now my hiccups have completely disappeared!

Thanks again earthclinic community. This site is the best site for finding great home remedies.

My family have all been using a method I found here for as long as I can remember. It's a variant on the water drinking one. My sister found it after she had hiccups for almost two days!!! I've always been distrustful of hiccup cures but amazingly this one seems to work. Luckily, I've never had it as bad as my sister!! ^_^

My 13 yr old daughter was having trouble with hiccups all day long. Finally, we went on EC and found peanut butter. We only had almond butter so used that instead and within minutes the hiccups stopped! And she was relieved- amazing!

Apple Cider Vinegar

To stop my hiccups, I took Baclofen 10mg and they stopped immediately. Last Tuesday, after lunch, I started hiccuping about every 5 seconds. It stopped for about an hour, then got going again. This lasted until Thursday around 6pm when my doctor prescribed Baclofen 10mg and, after taking only one pill, the hiccups immediately stopped. I realize this might not work for everyone, but I am very grateful it stopped mine. Hope this helps someone else.

Wow, that was soooo easy! I had just a tiny sip of water in my mouth (I actually had a large sip before I swallowed half of it), I leaned over, while sitting, with my head between my knees and swallowed. Gone. So cool!

Ice Cream, Cold- Pressed Barley Pills

When my husband gets the hiccups, he first tries a few bites of good quality ice cream. If this is unsuccessful, he takes four to six organic, cold-pressed barley pills. He has had 100% success in ridding himself from the hiccups.

Drink Water Without Breathing

While holding your breath, take a drink of any beverage. Soda or sweet tea works great, but I don't think it matters about the beverage. Usually one sip is all it takes.

Bitters on a lime!!!!

A very old "Bar" trick that works wonders every time!!! I've been plagued with hiccups for decades and it seems that this old fashioned remedy is just about the only thing that works for me!! Give it a try sometime... You will not be dissappointed!!

Lemon
Posted by Francisca (Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France) on 05/19/2011

Someone was suggesting a way to stop hiccups here a while ago. Here is another remedy, not that I have tried it yet as I seldom get hiccups but maybe somone can try it and tell me whether it works (I will do the same if in the meanwhile I do get hiccups): Put 1 drop of lemon essential oil on the tongue, it even works for babies although they might not like the taste, my book says.....

Tilt Head Backwards and Breathe Deeply
Posted by Francisca (Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France) on 05/08/2011

Interesting... My husband drinks water from the wrong side of the glass, so in fact he is doing exactly the same thing, lowering his head as far as he can to be able to drink from the other side. Now I know, next time one of us has the hicups we will try without the glass, much easier.

Inhale While Arching Your Back

Inhale Then Exhale: Inhale at a moderate and comfortable speed while arching your back and puffing out your chest until you cannot breathe in any more air, and then exhale also at a moderate and comfortable speed. Repeat if hiccupping continues.
