Natural Remedies for Edema (Swelling in the Tissues)

Swedish Bitters

My ob-gyn recently put me on a few heavy drugs to stop major menopausal bleeding. The drug - I believe - did weird things to my body although the bleeding stopped. One of the symptoms was swollen ankles and urine that was colorless for a few days. Swedish Bitters was recommended and a massage that concentrated on the internal organs which was amazing in itself. This morning, no swollen ankles, my urine was back to normal and I have more energy than the past few days.

My mom gets swelling in her hands from eating too much sugar. Try not eating sugar. Sugar is also said to reduce potassium from the body.

Would not have believed it, but mine has been cured by taking red vine leaf extract which I happend on when buying my vits on line. Marvellous.

All edema went within 20 days, even on long haul flights (16 hours). Only side effect (possible but not proven as may be age) is my hands now more prone to bruise blood hematomas, but these disappear quickly.

Limiting Carbohydrates

For the past 5 years, I have lived with edema in my left leg. I tried everything from lympathic massage and acupunture to Western medicine ( diuretics and a salt free diet). Nothing worked. Then, I found diet that has almost completely cured the edema, which I hope will help others that are suffering. I limit my carbohydrates to a max of 30 grams a day: every meal consists of low carb vegtables, protein and fat. No starch, no sugar, (no fun! ), but the edema has radially reduced in the past 30 days. I also supplement with the herb cleavers twice a day. I was not a "believer" when I first heard about this working for my condition. Obviously, I now think differently. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your advice about ALA for edema. I tried ALA in 100 mg vcaps and in three days my ankles were back to normal. Earth Clinic is an awsome site, and thank you for posting on it.

Sea Salt in Water

This is a truly amazing cure, drink two to three glasses of water. In each glass add a 1/4 teaspoon of Sea Salt. I'm sensitive so I used an 1/8 teaspoon of Sea Salt. My lower back was super swollen from Edema tried this method and within three hours all the swelling and pain was almost completely gone!

Start drinking more water, for example if you weigh 100 pound you drink 50 ounces of water. I would drink a couple extra glasses to be on the safe side.

I have had edema in my left calf, ankle, and foot for over 1 year. I had heart tests, kidney &. Liver tests and last week I had 6 different dooplers (sonograms) to check my veins and the blood flow. Every test was perfect. So I now will start with taking the Butcher's Broom to see if this will help with the swelling. I already started 3 weeks ago with drinking about 2 quarts of water a day. That reduced a little swelling, but the water helped a lot with making me feel good overall. Will report back in a few weeks.

NEED HELP WITH FOOT SWELLING AFTER ELEVATION! ... Yep you heard right. I had an ankle fusion (fused at talus) on Right Foot/Ankle Only;11 months ago, and about 6 months ago started having terrible issues with foot pain/plantar faceitis/ect. But the real issue is that during the night my right foot (measured at mid foot and below toes) swells about 1 to 1.5 inches around. It feels not only painful upon rising but as if I am trying to walk on a water balloon. The swelling gradually lessens throughout the day. The left foot and ankle are normal. This really concerns me and the Doc's just shrug and shake their heads. Please note that I have arthritis in the right foot from a broken mid foot in 2003. The original damage that forced fusion was compound right tib-fib-ankle joint fractures in winter 84, right ankle has had multiple surgeries prior to fusion, but never anything like this odd swelling???

Any help out there??? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

This is good for edema... In a large stockpot place:

2 potatoes with skins, 3 carrots, 1/2 head cabbage, handful of fresh parsley, 1/2 bunch broccoli. Add lots of water and bring to boil till tender and drink the juice. I make enough for 2 days and drink at least a quart a day or whatever you like. It tastes so good and the feet swelling goes down. I make soup from the vegetables and that is yummy too!

Ted's Remedies

I just started taking Blackstrap Molasses. I'm hoping it will cure my reinke's edema. Swelling in my vocal chords. I dont want to have surgery. Do you think it will? I have little legions on my vocal fold. I hope blackstrap will shrink them."

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Jamielah: A lot of conditions should be helped by taking lemon and baking soda, basically take one whole lemon and add baking soda until the fizz stops. Then add water to 1/2 glass. The body once it is alkaline, should be much better in fending off the inflammation or swelling by increasing the immune issues.

Usually taken twice or three times a day should help alkalize. Reduce eating white bread, pizza, or foods with white flour and drinking of any sweet drink will help. I am not certain if black strap molasses will help as it has sugar.

However, licorice extract should be a better option and so is taking zinc acetate 25/mg for 3 days every week not exceedng two months and some garlic"

I have the same problem - excruciating!! I also have very flat feet and saw an ad for that problem - plantar faciitis - the symptoms being when you hit the floor after a nights sleep extremely painful feet. The podiatrist sells you a kind of stirrup. Do you have flat feet? Do you wear orthotics? But it could also be as mentioned diabetes. For me, Im also wondering if all this excess calcium in my body is making my circulation so slow this is just another symptom. My whole body is in extreme pain in the morning until the morphine kicks in but if I could get rid of the feet pain it would stop me nearly puking in the morning.

Fulvic Acid Complex

Hi Everyone... A little while ago, an old Filipino family member whom we know well was reported to be suffering quite badly from leg edema as well as particularly bad skin problems all over her body. She is an 84 y o grandmother matriarch who lives alone(by choice) in the Balamban mountains on Cebu Island in the Philippines. It's very primitive there, no electricity or hospitals. You can only get to where she lives by motorbike-taxi because the roads are so very poor and its far from Cebu city.

Anyway, her family in Cebu city were worried about her and so they contacted us. The grandmother is also a vegetarian and still very healthy -- she used to hike the mountains regularly but, because of the edema, now has problems just walking. The family wanted her to go into the hospital in Cebu, but she flatly refused because she hates cities.

The gist of this was that I sent her a fulvic acid product, which also contained zeolite, concentrated ascorbate and all the major electrolyte minerals for the body. To be honest this was a shot in the dark by me -- the description of her problem given by her family was very sketchy and non-specific -- so there could have been many other things causing her problems and so I just sent her the Fulvic acid complex in the hopes that it would work for her and have particular beneficial effects on her kidneys, liver and blood. The product -- which is taken in drops and is only sold in the Philippines -- is called Quantumin Plus. The dose I recommended was 10 drops two or three times a day with water or Tea. I have seen similar fulvic acid complexes sold in the US online.

Today, we have just received word -- after a month -- that her skin problems are now healing rapidly and the edema in her legs has reduced significantly. She has been taking no other medicines(she hates hospitals too). She is now able to walk normally and apparently continues happily tending her pigs and chickens as well as tending the small coconut forest in her garden. I simply remain astonished at the power and usefulness of this fulvic acid drops mixture.

Hi, I've tried ACV, and there is some reduction, but... Your first priority should be to determine the cause of your swelling. Get the appropriate diagnosis from your physician, which will lead you to the proper course of treatment. This could be muscular, and require something altogether different. Some also research their symptoms on the Internet. Either way, start there and then research treatment. I hope this helps. BTW, if you already have a diagnosis, plz include in ur description, and it should help.
