Clogged Tear Duct

I am happy to give you the recipe for the eye wash. I used it myself about a month ago. I thought I had something in my eye. The eye doc said it was a mild bacterial infection and gave me some anti-biotic eye drops. Instead of using the anti-biotics I mixed up some of the eye wash. The recipe calls for a teaspoon of Goldenseal. I used one tea bag of Goldenseal instead. Other than that, I followed the directions and it did the trick. I hope it works for your Dad.

Here is the recipe.

EYE WASH—BACK TO EDEN/JETHRO KLOSS
Golden seal is excellent for the eyes. the following is the way the writer uses it for his eyes: steep a small teaspoonful of golden seal and one of boric acid in a pint of boiling water, stir thoroughly, let cool, and pour liquid off. put a tablespoonful of this liquid in a half cup of water. bathe the eyes with this, using an eye cup, or drop it in with an eye dropper. if the eyelids are granulated or there is film over the eyes, add one teaspoonful burnt alum powder. if you use it a little too strong, there is no harm done; it will only smart a little. (pg 246 back to eden)

I have used peroxide for ear infections, colds, cold prevention, cuts, cleaning, many things! And it is safe on little ones. I know because my mom used it on me and I have used it on my 3 boys.

Ditto on the use of breastmilk to clear up the clogged tear ducts or conjunctivitis. I've used it on 3 of my babies and it's worked within a couple days on all three. Just squeeze some into the clogged eye each time you breastfeed. If you don't breastfeed, you can either try to get your hands on some breastmilk and use it, or you can try putting a drop of black tea in each eye, which doesn't sting. My sister-in-law didn't try this and just did the drops the doctor prescribed and her child had the clogged ducts until she was over a year old, and then ended up getting surgery to correct it. It was miserable. You can also try ACV diluted in water, but that stings. Good luck.

Homeopathics

Thanks for that tip, Nicole! I looked it up and among other places, using organic eggshell calcium daily to heal cavities was discussed in this Health Ranger article this past summer. Besides, regrowing your teeth is simple. You'll just need two things: comfrey root and organic eggshells. Eggshells are used because they contain 27 minerals and loads of calcium, so they contain the ideal building materials to regrow your teeth. In fact, the composition of eggshells is very similar to the composition of our teeth and bones. Comfrey root is used because it accelerates bone, teeth and tissue growth. In fact, another name for comfrey root is knitbone, primarily because of its ability to knit - or regrow - bone together so quickly.

It's not under this site category yet:

My son has had an on and off toothache for a bit now, I have been waiting to try the eggshell calcium for him (prepared from chicken eggs consumed daily for two months and you will see tooth healing) but since he's 7 it's a little harder to get him to take it. Anyways, for his toothache, chamomilla has provided him instant relief, within a minute or two and he's back to bed. Other times belladonna and calcerea phosphorica has worked. Well, two days ago he had a toothache then woke up with a swollen cheek, it was so bad it looked like he had a giant gumball in there and the swelling was also making under his eye puffy. I got online immediately to look for a homeopathic remedy and try nux vomica and veretrum album but those didn't appear to be working after one day of use so I looked again and tried belladonna and mercurius vivus and after another day it was almost completely gone, the abscess started forming on his gum (so the infection has been localizing) now we are working to get rid of his abcsess with 4grams of vit c and regular doses of colloidal silver each day. I just wanted to share about how the homeopathic preparations work instantaneously and are even easy for babies too because they are little sweet pills that dissolve in your mouth.

He is in remission and undergoing chemo, he will be going thru his final chemo cycle in a month and will be in maintenance for another year. I read with great interest on the usage of food grade h2o2 and its benefits. Is there anyone out there who has used this for children?

Is she allergic to propolis? I find it extremely helpful for my kids who r 2 and 4 when they have mouth ulcers and sore throat. Its in the form of drops.. But its extremely bitter. U can dilute in juice and let them drink it. Just 2 drops 2 or 3 times a day. Its also very helpful for adults who have tickly throat and loss of voice. The propolis drops have antibacterial and anti viral properties.

I have done the strep throat remedies suggested on this site successfully for my 4 year old, but because she keeps sucking her thumbs she gets reinfected with strep (or it's latent... )I've gone to the doctors who prescribes medicine but I don't know how I can get her to stop sucking her thumb w/o taping them up. Any suggestions... Am I harming her by only doing the home remedies? I don't want her to come down with rheumatic fever, and is there a remedy for that?

Thank you for any direction you can give me...

Ear Infections
Posted by Ag (Toronto, On) on 09/27/2010

Oh my goodness, I would never recommend this! Water in the ear is what the bacteria grows in, and once the ice is melted, what is it? WATER! No way! That does not sound smart at all. My son had 2 ear infections. The first one was so bad that the swelling was in the bone and it was causing his ears to protrude. For the second one (he was just under 2 years old) I eliminated all sugar from his diet (no fruits, no juice, no honey) as well as glutens and dairy. I added a tiny bit of ACV to his sippy cup throughout the day, and put a tiny bit of Colloidal Silver into his sippy cup of water at night. I bought an organic ear oil (main ingredients: olive oil, garlic, and oregano) and swabbed his ear with it 2 or 3 times a day. 10 days later at the checkup, his pediatrician said "Ooh, looks like the antibiotics worked" and I told her we never took the antibiotics! That we were just vigilant with watching him and were under the supervision of a naturopath. She wasn't pleased about us not having taken the drugs, but she was happy the infection was gone.

Rashes: Multiple Remedies

Sounds like yeast on the skin. If you have access to extra virgin coconut oil, unrefined, cold pressed then you may try this on a very small area of the rash. Small area to be sure of no bad reaction. If no bad reaction try on entire rash. Be sure to try small area first. This was done for a family members baby of mine, after they had used stuff from the medical doctor that did not work. The coconut oil made the rash alot better and finally cleared it.

We have been to 2 - 3 drs.. Tried all you have tried plus oral antibiotics in case of a strep infection there.. No results! I did start using straight ACV which helped but it burned badly so was hard to apply. It faded the red though.. We are at a loss! HELP!!!! Right now we are in Italy and cannot get DMSO and such...

Re: Giving turmeric to babies or children

Turmeric has completely helped my husband and I deal with boils - after 2 or 3 each we have had no more. We mixed turmeric with warm water and milk to drink, and also applied paste of turmeric and honey.

But when my daughter developed extremely large painful ones, we weren't initially able to get any turmeric inside her. So we tried a few tricks that we don't normally turn to, and she's done better with them. Antibiotics did NOT work -- they cleared the infection while she was taking them, then the boils returned again.

External applications of turmeric are also fine for children, and draw out pus very quickly. We use a mixture of turmeric and honey, with a few drops of tea tree and lavender essential oil -- mix well. Note that tea-tree is safe for mucous membranes/genital area; lavender is not recommended on those areas for young kids unless very well diluted.

Here are some suggestions for parents who want to try giving turmeric orally to kids; I hope they can help someone!

1) Curcumin in capsules has a less offensive taste than straight turmeric -- we sometimes use that in our dosing by breaking open the capsules and using half the powder each time.

2) Put some turmeric/curcumin on a spoon with manuka honey (itself great against infections)- follow with milk or another bit of honey.

3) If all else fails, icecream is a good cover-up because it's cold and sweet, although of course the sugar isn't so great

Best to try when your child is hungry! Always start with a sip of water and a spoonful of the sweet stuff to lubricate the mouth and to make the experience appealing! Then turmeric, then honey/icecream again.

Good luck everyone.

EC: Thank you! Reminder: please do not give honey to babies under a year old.

Hi, I have found that if you always have a layer of vaseline around the mouth area the drooling etc from teething would not affect the skin. Especially at night it will help heal it if you put a thick layer of it around the chin and on lips mouth etc do it when the child is asleep it will be easier. During the day keep topping it up. Hope it helps.

Athlete's Foot

This doesn't sound like athletes foot to me. Athletes foot won't have lumps and bumps. The leathery skin with cracks and itch sounds more like the contact dermatitis that my friend's lad had. Any athletes foot cream should have had some kind of effect if it was that. Try googling contact dermatitis and feet for images to see if thats it. If it is I'll ask my freind what she did for it.

Athlete's Foot
Posted by Reneenbrown (Bend, Or, Us) on 05/15/2010

My 2 year old has had a rash on her feet for over a month now. I think it is athletes foot, but I have never seen it and the pictures on the internet are so extreme it is hard to compare.

It started out with a few bumps where her toes connect to her foot - on top of the foot. It wakes her up in the middle of the night itching - but during the day it doesn't seem to bother her that much. In between her toes also felt leathery. After a few weeks, in between her toes started peeling.

I was started rubbing her feet every night with a mixture of calendula, grapefruit seed extract, tea tree oil and other herbs for the skin. After 3 weeks it seemed to have gone away, but only for a few days, then it came back.

Now there are red bumps in the same place as before and little spots all over the top of her foot.

I have been trying an all natural athletes foot cream I purchased from an organic grocery store. I have using it 2 times a day for 10 days with no results.

Her feet don't stink and as far as I can tell, there isn't anything on the bottom of her feet.

Is this athletes foot? If so, is apple cider vinegar safe to use on children? Can I add it to her bath - because trying to get her to sit still and keep her feet in a bowl of vinegar for even 3 minutes is tough!

I am afraid to do anything for too long because of her sensitive skin - I don't want to cause more damage than there is.

Clogged Tear Duct

My infant son had a clogged tear duct and his eye was constantly irritated. The pediatrician gave me some drops. I used them, but they didn't clear his eye up. I talked to my grandmother (a mother of 9 children) and she told me to put breast milk in his eye and massage the tear duct. Within a couple of days it was cleared up! The day after I talked to my grandmother, I was discussing my son with my friend from Russia, and she suggested the same thing my grandmother had. It really works!

Eczema

I am in complete shock. My daughter is 5 years old, and has had eczema since birth - extremely severe eczema over 95% of her body. We have tried absolutely everything, from prescription creams, OTC lotions, oatmeal, antihistamines, ACV, Baking Soda, etc etc. Any parent that has a child with eczema has undoubtably tried all the same remedies. I stumbled on this website and read about Epsom Salts. We started giving her a bath every night in the salts - 1 cup for a half full tub. She soaks for about 10 minutes, then out of the tub and gets slathered with a heavy lotion. After 1 week I am flabbergasted - her eczema is so much better, her skin is absolutely clear in most places, and only the worst scabby parts remain. ( We also used Iodine on the really bad infected spots for a couple of days). I don't know why or how it works, but it does! I am one relieved and happy mommy...and she is a much happier child. She actually has an appointment with a specialist in 4 days, and I won't have anything to show the doctor!

Teething Rash

Question: Teething Rash of 5 year-old. My daughter just turned 5 and is having 2 permanent teeth push through, one on her right bottom front and one is a molar on the right side as well.

She has a rash under her bottom lip, in the corners of her mouth and on her chin, sometimes it burns on her skin at the rash site. Does any parent have experience with this happening with their young child?... And how would anyone recommend treating the rash and minimizing the burning sensation that it is causing?

Thank you very much!, Ronda

My boys, 3 and 5, both get eczema and skin allergies. I tried all kinds of remedies and ointments. When I removed all artificial colours, flavours, preservatives and flavour enhancers it cleared up. I limit processed food as much as possible and they drink non- homogenised milk.

Its worth trying and not too difficult. At birthday parties and special occasions I don't worry too much.

Good luck.

Headaches in Children
Posted by Pegster (Mt. Holly Springs, Pa) on 03/26/2010

My son suffered with headaches at a very young age and they started around 6 years old. As he got older they got worse. I did some research and I took him off of sugar, caffiene and chocolate, well the headaches got better and he began to do a lot better in school also. Now that he is older he has a sensitivity to red food dye for which is in alot of juices. His physician wanted to put him on a drug for ADHD and I said absolutely not. He also had allergies when he got older. So the combination of him staying away from the listed foods and the red food dye, he is now a very healthy 35 year old man and I am oh so glad that I read up on this and also refused the ADHD medication..............thanks.......

My lil one had the same problem, some day would get better, some day he couldn't even open his eyes from the night until I can clean it up with tea. Doctor said if by 1 birthday it wouldn't clear up, than surgery would be needed and that it is very common. We used prescribed antibiotic baby eye drops (prevent infection)Second time around don't think would use them. And as was mentioned before massaging the very corner of the eye (where the duct) but still about every hour eyes needed to be cleaned with chamomile or black tea. About week after his first birthdays everything disappeared. So listen to your gut and Good Luck!

Clogged Tear Duct

It's always worrying when a small child has anything wrong. I had this done as an adult many years ago. I don't mean to be dismissive but the GP probobly shouldn't have called it surgery. That makes the procedure sound much worse than it actually is. The Doc will put eyedrops in to deaden and and dilate the tear vessels. A baby may need more anaesthesia to stop them from wriggling and moving. Then a saline solutuion is washed through using a syringe. Took less than 5 min. Afterwards I drove home (Bout a 100 mile) without any problems.

I had the clogged tear duct for close on a year after having an operation near my eye without any infection setting in. My doc kept saying that infection shouldn't be a problem as the eye is self cleaning. My main problem was that because the natural liquid in the eye couldn't flow the the tear duct, one eye kept "crying".

However if there is mucous building up that can become infected and if massage doesn't work - this is not a procedure that anyone should be afraid of. I didn't even have a bandage.

I know someone who had to get a this surgery a couple of times, and the third time it happened someone told her to massage her tear ducts. Her tear ducts no longer get clogged. Simply put your thumb and index finder on either side of your nose and gently massage the tear ducts (press/release, circles). You will easily feel them. Try it on yourself before deciding to try it on the baby.

Clogged Tear Duct
Posted by Janice (Coloma, Mi) on 03/07/2010

My son had clogged tear ducts when he was a baby. I had to massage the side of his nose by his eyes and mucus would come out. Then I would have to put an ointment in them. The Dr. said he would wait until he was five months old but if it hadn't opened up by then he would have to open them up (lance them open somehow). I found an herbal recipe, mixed it up and put it in one eye. The following day I was so worried because his eye (underneath) was all red and it was even red down into his cheek. The following day, it was as clear as a bell and so I did the other eye and the same thing happened. After that, they were fine. The next trip to the Dr.s office, he was happy that they had finally cleared up. I didn't tell him what I did. I will look up the recipe and post it as soon as I find it.

I have just found out today, that a 6 MOUNTH OLD BABY GIRL will have to have surgery for a CLOGGED TEAR DUCT in April. Doctor said infection could spread or blindness could occur if surgery was not preformed. I believe the baby's weight to 12 to 15 pounds. There is no other name that has been given by the doctor. ( He just says clogged tear duct )

So I am believing this to be some kind of infections, since the doctor said it can spread...

Ted or anyone have any natural remedies for this???

I believe the mother has massaged the eye and put warm cloths on it. None of this has helped.

used on both my kids with great success within hours or overnight:

wash bottom with cetaphil lotion (lipid free soap substitute) and rinse. product will say rinsing is not necessary, but found works best for this if you do.

then, blow dry the bottom with a blow dryer on cool/warm until dry--less irritating on sensitive skin.

follow with Dr. Smith's ointment (sold in most stores in baby ointment section) it has thymol which is an antifungal.

Ice Chips for Ear Infection?

Both of my kiddos have very sensitive skin and we had to eliminate all soaps and shampoos for a while. When they would "break out", I would use 1 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar in the bath and that started to clear it up.

What soap, if any, are you using??

We also found that Emu Oil (kind of pricey) works the best to clear up many skin conditions. My son suffers from excema, and Emu oil is the only thing that cleared it up. (And I tried Extra virgin coconut oil, Vitamin E oil, tea tree oil..)

Hope that helps. :)

My six year old daughter has had a problem since she was 2. She gets tiny red bumps all over her torso and even on her forehead and cheeks after she takes a bath. She gets very itchy for about 15 min. until her body is completely dry. We consulted a Dr. and he said It's because she is allergic to dust mites. in her case her body reacts to the allergy only when it comes in contact with water. I removed all the carpets, soft toys and washed her bed protector every now and then. Still every morning, after taking the bath she is frantically itching all over her body. I wonder what's wrong?

You can help a lot by having her sitting in a bowl of water with couples drops of Lugol's solution and baking soda (4 Tb spoons per gallon of water) as long as she can stand, 15 minutes would be ideal. It is very safe and does the work. You can read a book for her while she is sitting and no sugars in the diet until it goes into remission.

Headaches in Children
Posted by Tracy (San Augustine, Texas, Usa) on 12/07/2009

An often-missed cause of headaches can be chocolate, including chocolate milk. When I was younger, I worked at a bank with a young lady who would often drink a small carton of chocolate milk for her breakfast before we opened. She would get severe migraines & have to sit or lie down for awhile. I had read about chocolate being a possible cause & as soon as she stopped drinking chocolate milk, she quit getting migraines.

Caffeine withdrawal can also cause severe migraines. I've quit drinking sodas a few times in the last few years when I've found myself drinking too many & I have suffered migraines so severe that I can barely stay on my feet. Some of them lasted for days on end. They eventually stopped.

Within the last few years, I've found myself occasionally suffering from sinus problems, including congestion & infection, usually a result of being out in adverse weather (cold, drizzly, bone-chilling). I don't always get congested, but I do get severe migraines that hurt so bad my eyes hurt as well. Using some of the remedies for sinus problems on this website have helped me.

Dear Ted, Thank you so much for your answer. It is always great hearing from you! There is always something new to learn from you! I didn't know this Edward Bernay. I hate Sigmund Freud with all my heart! I can't believe his "philosophy" passed off as"science". The pacifier is strongly in use in the all the West. You see children use it up to 3 and 4 years of age. Virtually everybody uses it. The only exceptions are the children who actually refuse it despite the parents insistence. A friend of mine tried to tape it to the baby face! 3 is the average age children stop using it, by that time the damage affects nearly 100% of kids. They hook the children up in the hospital were they are born, and the doctor suggest putting them to sleep with a pacifier to avoid SIDS. The PR belief artfully widespread among people is that, sure, it affects teeth, but they are just the temporary teeth, not the definitive one. They don't understand that it is the shape of the palate that gets permanently distorted! After the first months the children grow so attached to it that it is a nightmare to wean them from their blinky. I feel so dumb for letting this happen. I can't believe I did it. Really! I was in a dream-like state about this particular thing. I guess this is what happens to people on so many health related things (and in all their "opinions"). They follow what everybody else does with a disconnected brain and a reassuring feeling of "normality". This happens also for the spiritual "diseases" of "civilization". I feel very guilty! I am already giving him vit. C. I will give more, and I will try to add magnesium, even if it will be difficult to make him drink it.

Thank you again. I will try to find the documentary. . .

Do you have any news about the Codex Alimentarius. I am very worried about it, but everything looks "silent". With much gratitude, D.

Pacifiers and Ruined Teeth
Posted by Ted (Bangkok, Thailand) on 10/22/2009 391 posts

Dear Daniela: I thought they did away with pacifiers since the late 1950s or early 1960s from a findings by dentists that it caused displaced teeth. I didn't know there is a comeback! I left U.S. in 1981 and thought the pacifier is no longer in use. In any case taking plenty of vitamin C and some magnesium will correct some of that damage. It must be noted that some of those may cause permanent damage.

WARNING!

Dear Ted, How are you? I hope very well. I am writing just to let you know a bad thing that happened to my son. He will be 2 on November 7th. I was so fool to give him a pacifier since birth. I was trusting what everybody else was doing and industries and doctors. How foolish of me! I don't trust them in anything! How could I trust them on this one! So I gave him the pacifier up to 4 days ago when I checked on the internet to see up to what age it is considered safe for the children's teeth to use the pacifier. Many websites were saying it is safe until 2 years of age, some say between 2 and 3 or 4. The site of Colgate, very honest people, says that it is safe until 6 years of age (safe for them and for the dentists not for the children). Then I found a few sites warning about the use of that dibolical object beyond 1 year of age. A site of an independent Japanese dentist said that if you keep using it up to 1 1/2 year chances of getting dental maloclusions is 30 %; if you keep it up to 2 years it is 60% , up to 3 years it is 100%. His was the only honest site I think. So I rushed to check my son's bite and it is completely spoiled. I hadn't noticed before but there is a huge gap between the upper and inferor teeth. When he closes his bite completely he can still stick most of the tongue out of the teeth! His mouth looks exactly as the picture of the pacifier damages shown in the Japanse site. I am horrified. And I have let this happen. Now it is too late. He will have a lot of trouble eating (which can potentially make the problem even worse as the face muscles try to adapt) and when his permanent teeth will come out he will have to wear braces for years. Thank you Avent, Gerber and so on. I couldn't find a warning abut this on Earthclinic and I think it would be a good idea to post my message to help mothers take wise decision. By the way I didn't give a pacifier to my older daughter and she has a perfect bite.

Got to run! Thank you!

I do use Bach products and yes, they are incredible! My mom gave me a Bach bottle 7 years ago for anxiety. Its great!

If you know of a site or some actual remedies to do for my son that would be great!

Thank you very much!

Colds and Flu

I know being a first time parent can be an anxious time. You mention that you have never been too hip on American medicine so I'm not sure if you are perhaps, European. If so, you are maybe familiar with Rudolf Steiner who founded anthroposophy. He has many wonderful and gentle treatments for young children (adults, too but you specifically asked for a young child) that I used when my kids were very young. One of the companies is called Weleda so you may even be familiar with it since it is in all health food/natural stores. If you google Steiner medicine or anthroposophical medicine, you will find lots of help. I know it helped ease my anxiety as a young mom.

Speaking of anxiety, you may also want to consider Bach flower remedies. Rescue remedy is a powerful remedy and we always keep it on hand in our home. If you are not familiar with them then google them and learn about them because they are gentle but effective.

Also, if you do like alternative ways you can have a look at Mothering magazine which was started back in the mid 70's. I found it very comforting and helpful throughout my older kids baby/ toddler/ youth years. I learned so much from that magazine and often it was a jumping point to learn more on a subject. It helped me make some big decisions as well that didn't necessarily fit into mainstream American mindset i.e., family bed, vaccinations, homeschool, etc. Of course, back in the early 80's a lot of these ideas were just being pioneered here in the US. Now, at least there are more people open to these ideas. Anyway, I hope this info can help ease the two of you. Lisa

Colds and Flu

My son is 13 months old. His mother was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with a sinus infection. She then developed a pretty nasty cough. 3 weeks later, still the same. Then I get sick. I have the same cough, headaches and sinus pain and fever. Mom gets all these symptoms as well, plus sore throat and red spots on the throat, swollen glands. The doctor tells us he thinks we have the flu. The next day our son gets a cough and then a fever.

We are first time parents and I have never been too hip to American medicine. I just found this site today and I am super excited!! I am excited to do the H2O2 remedies and Apple cider vinegar...and prob a bunch of others.

Bottom line is my son has been sleeping and running a high fever.... Doctors pretty much tell us we have to wait it out... I think mom is going to have an anxiety attack worrying about our little boy.

There is a lot of good information on here for flu symptoms but nothing is specific for babies.........

I am in need of some specific things to do for a 13 month old.

Thank you so very much!!!!

Toddlers Body Rash Cured

I'd just like to extend a overdue but heartfelt thanks to Ted and all the other folks who have listed their cures and remedies. After spending many sleepless nights looking for a cure for my Vegan toddlers' aggressive growing rash - i stumbled accross very helpful info at Earth Clinic from Ted's Bicarb and ACV drink (which i still take cause i like it and it seemed to work for my candida), the tumeric paste, VCO, acidophilus to omega deficiency. The rash disappeared within a week from her entire body and hasn't returned. Truth is i now use this website as my first reference, and have passed on the word to the parents with other toddlers. Thanks Ted for taking your time and sharing your remedies - your extra long emails are EXTREMELY USEFUL AND HELPFUL.

EC: Hi Choob, Can you please be more specific about the remedies you used to cure your child's rash, i.e., recipes, quantities, dosages, how often? Thank you!
