Burning mouth syndrome is a miserable condition which can be difficult to treat. Fortunately there are effective natural cures that can give relief to symptoms and resolve the causes in many cases. Home remedies for burning mouth syndrome include nutritional supplements, herbs, and the treatment of underlying health conditions.

What is Burning Mouth Syndrome?

Burning mouth syndrome can be idiopathic (with no known cause) or it may be a secondary condition to another health problem. With burning mouth syndrome, there is a burning sensation felt primarily by the tongue. The gums, palate and mucous membranes in the mouth may be affected as well. Treatment focuses on bringing temporary relief, figuring out the underlying cause and treating that cause.

What Causes Burning Mouth Syndrome?

Burning mouth syndrome may be a secondary condition that arises from a primary condition. Anxiety, stress, depression, diabetes, acid reflux and allergies can cause burning mouth syndrome. Nutritional deficiencies and certain medications can cause burning mouth syndrome. Burning mouth syndrome may be caused by bruxism, tongue chewing or other poor oral habits.

Thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can be linked to burning mouth syndrome. Oral health conditions, including thrush and a dry mouth can cause buring mouth syndrome.

If you have any of the above conditions, seek remedies to treat these conditions. This may solve your burning mouth syndrome. If you take any medications, either prescription or over the counter, see if dry or burning mouth are a side effect of these medications. Even if burning mouth is not a listed side effect, if could be a side effect for you. Speak to your doctor about alternative medications if you think this is a possibility.

How to Help Burning Mouth Syndrome - Right Now!

Honey

Allow a half a teaspoon of honey to dissolve in your mouth. Honey has amazing healing properties and is soothing to irritated tissue as well. A local and raw honey is ideal.

Clove

Clove is anti-bacterial and also has numbing properties. A drop of clove essential oil added to 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil can be placed into the mouth. Allow the oil to sit in the mouth for a minute or two and then swallow. 1/2 teaspoon of clove powder can be added to warm water and taken as a tea.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne is an herb that can reduce pain, increase salivation and increase circulation. Adding a bit of cayenne pepper to food or adding 1/4 teaspoon to some juice and slowly sipping it may bring some temporary relief.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is alkalizing to the body and the mouth. Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 6 ounces of water and sip on it, allowing it to come in contact with all areas of your mouth before swallowing.

Supplements for Burning Mouth Syndrome

It is not uncommon for burning mouth syndrome to be caused by nutritional deficiencies. If you suffer with burning mouth syndrome, consider the following supplements:

  • B Complex - The B12 and folic acid are especially important.
  • L-Lysine - L-Lysine is an amino acid commonly used to solve other oral health problems including cold sores.
  • Zinc - Zinc is necessary for cell repair.
  • Vitamin C - Vitamin C is also needed for cell repair and is critical for immune health.
  • ALA - Alpha Lipoic Acid  is another nutrient that is needed at the cellular level and is helpful to some with burning mouth syndrome.

Long Term Remedies for Burning Mouth Syndrome

Blackstrap Molasses

Since burning mouth syndrome is often linked to nutritional deficiencies, supplementing your diet with blackstrap molasses may be the cure for you. Blackstrap molasses contains iron and B vitamins, both of which are critical for sufferers of burning mouth syndrome.

Burdock Root

Burdock root is a gentle herb that is healing to the nerves and cleansing to the blood. Burdock root is a food in some cultures. Take 2 capsules with each meal for at least 3 months. It can take time for the healing to be complete.

Oral Care for Burning Mouth Syndrome

SLS (sodium laureth sulfate) is in many oral care products and most toothpastes. Look for an SLS free toothpaste. Better yet, use baking soda to brush your teeth. Baking soda has been used to clean teeth for generations. It also helps to alkalize the mouth.

Do not use mouthwashes that contain artificial colors or sweeteners. Hydrogen peroxide from the drug store can be used to rinse out the mouth instead.

Dietary Changes

Certain foods may aggravate burning mouth syndrome. Diet sodas, anything with artificial sweeteners and msg should be strictly avoided. Sugar, coffee, and processed foods may need to be reduced or eliminated as well.

Foods high in iron, like eggs, leafy greens and lean red meat may be helpful to some with burning mouth syndrome.

Fruits and vegetables are also an excellent addition to the diet to increase nutrients to the body and moisture to the mouth.

Be sure to drink plenty of water or herbal tea each day. A dry mouth is going to be more likely to be irritated than a moist mouth.

Banished Burning mouth. So distracting and distressing.

What I did was try MOM [Milk of Magnesia]; big swig in mouth and hold there as long as can before spitting out. No rinsing. Then one drop therapeutic Frankincense vitality on softest possible dry toothbrush and brushed thoroughly on teeth, above gumline, and tongue gently.

Try not to rinse with water right away.

I did this treatment twice a day for 3 days. Then added a day again if flared up.

Hydrogen peroxide seemed to bring it back on.

I also upped my probiotics.

God Bless.

B12 in conjunction with Lipoic Acid has TOTALLY gotten rid of my BMS!! I have tried every single DYI I've read about, including drugs my doctor prescribed...the only temporary relief was rinsing my mouth with Apple Cider Vinegar, and even that was painful. Depression was setting in because the inside of my lips felt like there were small flat raw lesions that came and went in different areas, and around the front tip and edges of my tongue were ON FIRE all the time, 24/7! I then read about taking B12 and Lipoic Acid together.

This is my own DIY (I weigh 135lbs) 3000mcg B12 with 300mg Alpha Lipoic Acid in the morning, and 1000mcg B12 and 300mg Lipoic Acid after dinner. You can adjust and see what works for you.

Within just a week all the little lesions were gone from inside of my lips and my tongue barely had any sensitivity. As of today, 7/17/16 I've had 4 total days PAIN FREE. I've also been able to go back to brushing my teeth with my regular toothpaste with NO BURNING!! I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. I wish you all the best if you try this.

Hey guys, so this is going to be a long story but I thought it might help some of you that have just discovered they have burning mouth syndrome. I just went 4 weeks with it, but it took 3 weeks to get it diagnosed. That's a whole other story that I won't even go into.

Anyway, I'll give you a background about what lead to this. So about 5 months ago I gave up red meat, then about 3 months ago I decided that wasn't so bad so maybe I will try vegan before 6 (aka VB6), then I decided to cut out meat all together, except for large get togethers or on the occasional weekend when I wanted to live it up. So when you go vegan I gave up eggs, dairy, and meat. I loved being vegan, felt great, was taking my b12 supplements, thought everything was fine. That was the case until I burned my tongue one evening eating what I thought was "warm" apple pie. Well I only burned it a little bit, like if you drank something that was too hot. Didn't think anything of it until the next afternoon around 3 pm when the tastebuds on my tongue started swelling up all around my tongue.

So the next couple weeks I went to some crappy doctors that were available at a health clinic and they couldn't figure it out, but gave me some serious pain meds (woohoo! ). They referred me to an oral surgeon who laughed me out of the office because apparently an oral surgeon wouldn't know what to do with this. Then I ended up calling my primary care physician - should have done this in the first place, but unfortunately by the time the pain was initially excruciating it was a Sunday. So he said I had thrush and that the BMS was secondary. He gave me a prescription for Mycelex and sent me on my way but said to call back in a few days if there were still issues.

Well I followed everything to a "T" and my tongue was still going crazy. I started adding things back into my diet - eggs, then yogurt, then white meats. Nothing. In the meantime I had gone in for some blood work, but they only tested me for a b12 deficiency (aka pernicious anemia) and HIV (which they forgot to do at the clinic but luckily I am happily married and was not too concerned about that test). So I vaguely remember mentioning to my doctor during our conversation that I had a slight history of anemia, nothing major just that I wasn't able to donate blood a couple times in my life.

Then a couple days ago I was having a conversation with my husband about how it's like my body is making me eat everything that I had cut out of my diet while I was vegan. Then I remembered that I hadn't eaten any red meat yet. So the next evening we made steak fajitas. The swelling started to go down within an hour, just a little bit, but enough that I could tell there was a difference. So then we went out and got some iron pills and I took one as soon as we got home. The next morning the swelling had gone down a bit more. So then I took another iron pill, had eggs for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch, and a cheeseburger for dinner, needless to say I am almost back to 100% feeling normal.

Now I haven't added any citric acid back in yet, I think I will give it another week just so I don't irritate anything, but I at least wanted to get this posted in case it helps someone rule it out. When I read the boards and heard there is no known cure if it is primary I got completely depressed, the thought of never being able to enjoy a glass of wine again or dinner out with my husband weighed heavily on me. I spent hours trying to figure it out and I hope that by posting this it might just help somebody else. Good luck everyone!!!
