Natural Remedies for Autism

Autism is a complex disorder that affects nearly 1 in every 88 children in the United States alone. If you or your family is one of those affected, you know the difficulties that face an individual with autism. Our goal is to offer you effective natural treatment suggestions, such as fish oil, magnesium, and melatonin, that pair well with traditional treatments to best support a balanced therapeutic approach.

What Is Autism?

Autism is the general term given to a group of serious developmental conditions that collectively are known as autism spectrum disorders. The condition typically manifests in early childhood, usually before age 3. While symptoms vary, any form of autism spectrum disorders affects an individual’s ability to communicate and interact with others.

Autism spectrum disorder or ASD is considered a serious neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication and social interaction as well as several other potential areas. In many cases, affected individuals exhibit repetitive behaviors, intensified interests in specific subjects, and preferred activities. Different forms of the condition include autism, Asperger’s syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder, which were previously considered separate.

What Causes Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Many individuals and even families given a diagnosis of autism wonder what they have done wrong. Autism is really no fault of anyone, especially not the mother during pregnancy or birth. Autism spectrum disorder has no single known cause and is likely the result of a variety of factors. Genetics as well as environmental factors are believed to play a role in the presentation of autism.

One of the longest standing controversies regarding autism hinges on whether there is a link between ASD and certain vaccines. Despite a range of research, no reliable study has identified a link between ASD and any vaccine.

How Do Traditional Medicine and Natural Remedies Work Together?

Autism is a disorder that responds best to treatment that is holistic and addresses all aspects of the condition. Recent research has shown a benefit for what is considered complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) or integrative medicine that focuses on pairing natural treatment approaches with behavioral therapies and treatments. This approach facilitates a more balanced treatment plan as it allows families, like yours, to treat the individual with autism as just that – an individual affected by autism.

What Are the Best Natural Remedies for ASD?

We suggest combining natural remedies with behavioral treatments for the best results. Nevertheless, anecdotal evidence points to fish oil, magnesium, and melatonin as three of the most effective natural treatment options.

1. Fish Oil

Fatty acids, in general, are essential for the effective development and function of the brain. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids and is a balanced nutritional supplement. Studies suggest that this oil helps reduce repetitive behavior and hyperactivity and improves socialization.

2. Magnesium

Autism is a condition that is highly influenced by nutritional deficiency. Magnesium deficiency can lead to a number of disruptive behaviors including restlessness, body rocking, teeth grinding, hiccups, noise sensitivity, poor attention span, and poor concentration. Taking a magnesium supplement will help reduce these behaviors and support overall function.

3. Melatonin

Nearly half of individuals affected by ASD also struggle with sleep disorders, which only exacerbate the condition. A regular dose of melatonin helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle, reducing the prevalence of associated behaviors as well.

4. Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency is not uncommon for individuals with autism and it is commonly recommended for autistic children. If you choose to use a vitamin D supplement with your child, it is important to keep his doctor informed and have your child's blood monitored to ensure that the vitamin D levels are in an appropriate range. Vitamin D toxicity is a serious health problem that can sometimes arise with vitamin D supplementation.

No two individuals experience autism in the same way, and individuals do not respond to the same treatments. Let us know if you try one of these natural remedies or add your own suggestions to our extensive reader-contributed list below.

Anti-Depressant Connection

I have a nephew with autism that saddens me every day because his potential as a human being was taken away. One in 48 children here in the US are struck on the autism spectrum...and here is more evidence that drugs do play a part in this devastating disease - please share the info with others you know..would you take an antidepressant if your unborn child had an 87% chance of contracting the disease?

Autism chelation therapy detox results and reaction 19/03/14: My daughter 5 is recovering from ASD, we do a lot to assist her function at optimum that is eg Gluten free, casein free, sugar free, no processed foods. With great results. Therapies.

We came across Bentonite clay on-Line and its ability to remove toxins from the body got me very interested. As the majority of those with ASD have difficulty removing toxins and heavy metals.

I gave her half a tsp on the 1st evening and noticed that she was more talkative the next day and less repetitive. On evening number 2 I put 1 tbs into a bowl and mixed it with putrefied water into a paste, and we did a body mask, and left it on until it dried (5min) in the bath I noticed little places of red where the clay had been on the longest , she really enjoyed her bath and was making sighs of relief (she usual hates bath and never lets me wash her back so this is notable) after her bath My daughter lent in and put here nose to mine! This is also something she never does, I asked her how she feels she remarked much better. and her speech became clearer , and more varied she asked questions.

Ok so any result like this is very encouraging but I think I got a little to excited to quickly, later that evening she was vomiting and she continued to vomit close to an entire night, she was in pain and had a fever at first I'am thinking its a bug but now I am thinking she was detoxing too fast. My advice to parents is to start very small as kids with ASD have a huge load of toxins, metals ect to offload.

Hi Carla...The current thinking on Autism and all ASD disorders is that these problems are all caused due to massive infestation of the child with parasites, candida and associated bacteria. It is the waste toxins that these pathogens produce that interferes with a babies brain development which is the main causes autism. See this research by Dr William Shaw. These constantly-produced toxic poisons from parasites and pathogens are what cause the learning, behavioural and social problems in the child. The treatment and cure for all ASD disorders is to kill off all the parasites, candida and other pathogens in the child's body thus removing all the dangerous toxins causing brain development problems as well.

Some months ago I was contacted by the father an autistic two year old boy who was in a private autism group trying to cure their children. He was following Kerri Rivera's protocol to cure autism which roughly involves the following protocols:

MMS(Chlorine Dioxide Protocol) as promoted by Andreas Klacker and Jim Hubble

MMS Enemas

Hulda Clark Parasite Protocol

No Anti-oxidants

Diet

The father of the autistic child had been on Terri Rivera's protocol for many months. He contacted me because he had read my book and wanted to know more about the Turpentine Protocol. He said that Terri's protocol had improved his two year old sons behaviour, learning etc by 80%(according to his ATEC scores) but that he could get no further improvement with Terri's protocol. I advised him to include and use 1/4 to 1/2 tspn turpentine mixed with castor oil and molasses or honey for taste.

Terri Rivera's protocol has so far cured 121 children from autism(with ATEC scores of less than 10) which is highly commendable. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. However, the cure is not consistent, because many people seem to have problems making progress. Terri Rivera has an autistic teenage son who has been on her protocol for 10 years and is still not cured. I have identified two reasons for this inconsistency -- Terri's protocol seems to be weak at getting rid of large parasites and is also not very good at getting rid of candida or bacterial biofilms. Turpentine is much better at doing both these tasks. The father has now stopped using the Chlorine Dioxide Protocol and is just using the turpentine protocol because he told me it was better with far less side-effects. His son also continues to improve. I am still advising and helping the father and the private autism group.

From my own research , here is a simple document that I wrote that describes additional protocols that will help to reduce both Herx or die-off reactions as well as reduce pathogenic poisons and will also help to reduce detox symptoms. As a group, all these simple protocols in the document are designed to more quickly heal the child's brain to normal social behaviour, learning etc.

Adjunct Nutrients to Help Minimize Detox, Herx Reactions and Poisons and to Help Proper Brain Development and Healing (wrt Learning, Social and Behavioural Problems)

Hi Bill,

I was reading about Kerri Rivera's CD protocol when I saw your post. I was also happy to see that your are from the Philippines. Our son is 4.6 yrs old diagnosed with ASD when he was 2 and we have been trying the NIDS protocol for 9mos now. However, the improvement is very little considering how expensive the medications and consultations are. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Jen

Hi Bill

thanj you for the information. I have read your book and I like it however it is intimidating grabbing any supplement mentioned and give ing to a 3 year old who has mild symptoms of autism …what dosage is ok and when is best time during the day to give these supplements and which ones are better for a child who is three and which ones are not safe …. He does not speak only barely says hi and bye and mom and dad but he doesn't not pronounce the letters in those words well … he does not play with other kids and is into himself … does not respond when you call him and does not make eye contact etc. He bites his dad quite often.

please if you could provide some insight as to dosing I would greatly appreciate it and if you could also let us know if bentonite taken orally or betonite clay bath is good for getting rid of toxins .. also which test is beta test to administer to see where he is at and what is his main issue to solve be it fungus or metal toxins such as mercury or lead or aluminum or parasites or Candida …

Many thanks

Greetings. Please, where can I learn more about the protocol for reversing Autism with Turpentine? What is the protocol, please? Also, being that turpentine is derived from Pine trees, can I use Maritime Pine organic essential oil instead of store bought turpentine? Please advise. I have a beautiful and very sweet autistic boy that because of his autism and ADHD, has great, great difficulty in concentrating and therefore learning. I want to help him. Please help us.

The autism group that I am involved with follow Kerri Rivera's protocol against autism. You can join the blog on her website here for more information about this protocol:

Kerri Rivera's CD Autism Forum

Kerri Rivera's protocol roughly involves the following:

* Using the MMS(Miracle Mineral Solution -- Chlorine Dioxide) protocol on a daily basis on the autistic child or adult, as promoted by Jim Hubble and Andreas Klacker.

* Using MMS enemas.

* Using Hulda Clark's Parasite Protocol.

* Using other medications like Theralac to promote good gut bacteria.

* Avoiding antioxidants.

* Diet.

Kerri Rivera has also claimed that her protocol has already cured at least 100 autistic children.

I was contacted by a father from a private autistic group who had read my book on candida and was interested in what I had written about turpentine and biofilms. He had been following Kerri Rivera's protocol for his autistic son for some while. He then told me that his two year old son's autism had improved by about 80% according to his ATEC scores while using MMS and Kerri's protocol. But that his son seemed to have reached a plateau and his son was now not improving much at all. I then advised that perhaps the one thing missing in Kerri's protocol was something that removed candida and bacterial biofilms more efficiently and quickly - so I advised implementing gum turpentine as well into the protocol for this reason. Without removing biofilms, it has been my experience that it becomes very difficult to get rid of well-established systemic candida problems. He implemented the turpentine protocol within Kerri's protocol on a daily basis with his young son and, after only a month, his son is excreting more parasites and biofilms consistently in his stools and the boy now continues to markedly improve.

The dosages of turpentine that the father is currently using for his son is 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon turps, depending on the age of the child. Turps is taken together with castor oil(1 tspn to 1 tablespoon, also dependent on age) together with sugar or molasses or honey. The castor oil is there to help the child to achieve 3 major toilets a day in order to help clear out parasites, candida, biofilm and toxins more quickly from his system. The father has now also formed his own autistic group and we have both been helping others wanting to cure their autistic children using both the Kerri Rivera Protocol and the Turpentine Protocol. Turpentine appears to be very powerful at removing parasites, candida, other pathogens and biofilms.

Dr William Shaw, in Great Plains in Kansas, is another researcher who has been successful in his own medical approach and treatments against autism and autism spectrum disorders. He uses a new medical approach and believes that autism arises and is caused mainly from toxic waste products from both bacteria and candida. Unfortunately, his treatment seems to be hideously expensive.

The type of turpentine they mean is pure gum turpentine that is distilled from pine tree sap. Most commonly available turpentine is a distilled coal tar and contains various toxins. It should not be ingested. Only use 100% pure gum turpentine derived from pine trees internally.

From personal research, Mitochondria, chemical imbalances, low glutathione, heavy metal toxicity and toxicity in general cause the above biomedial issues with children with autism.

Could someone provide some guidelines to alleviate these challenges as they affect academic studies as well as home life.

Link Between Gut Health and Autism

I am convinced that autism begins in the gut. My own struggles with candida overgrowth and leaky gut syndrome led me to believe that even while I was pregnant with my 3rd child, a son born 02/02/09, that he would have health and possibly mental issues. While in my belly he was extremely hyper and although I tried my best to restrict my diet I could feel that something would be different with my baby. He has been breast feed from the beginning and still breast feeds, but it has not prevented signs of autism.

Because I knew of my own health conditions I opted from the start not to give my son any vaccinations. I noticed about 3 weeks after he was born that his tongue was white like mine, which means I passed my own compromised immune system to my son. I was determined to breast feed because I wanted him to have the best chance possible to help build his immune system, but still the autistic signs emerged early on. When he was 5 months old I took myself to a natural path who explained that I must strictly restrict gluten and milk in my diet so as to not harm my baby. Although, my son seemed to nurse around the clock he never gained weight properly and seemed always hungry. His pediatrician advised I introduce cereal into his diet and although I knew of my own allergy to gluten I gave my son cereal mixed in Similac to stave off his hunger and help him gain weight. This was a huge mistake as he immediately, broke out in hives and diarrhea. I believed if I avoided the vaccinations and watched my diet carefully while nursing I could help strengthen his immune system and avoid autism.

I have since learned that it is possibly the mercury in vaccinations that damage the immune system. I have also learned that wheat products today are full of mercury. When introducing wheat to a child born with an already weakened immune system it reeks havoc on the body. I have found through trial and error that not only keeping my son from wheat and dairy are important, but also peanuts due to the high amount of fungus they carry. We avoid giving him sugar and corn products because they effect the gut flora and cause hyper behavior in most children, but especially those that are on the autistic spectrum.

I have recently introduced fivelac probiotics and he has shown much improvement in his eating habits and weight gain. We are not out of the woods yet, but hopefully as we push towards his 2nd birthday his speech will improve. He has excellent motor skills and makes eye contact and interacts well with people, but we still have speech delay.

It is really difficult to get rid of candida/leaky gut if the toxic metal problem isn't addressed. Zeolite products, chlorella, spirulina, cilantro, fermented foods - these should probably be in your arsenal. The other thing I've noticed, in general, is that the toxic metal/candida/leaky gut trio also leads to more than the usual number of allergies. This is probably why one acquaintance has successfully resolved all of her son's autistic tendencies with extreme diet observation/monitoring/controlling. Any mistakes lead to a slide back to autistic symptoms. NAET practitioners have done a study that showed that energetic elimination of allergies in autistic children leads to increasingly normal function, too.

I really appreciate the benefits of both elimination diets and NAET, but for long-term health I think it is important to remove the toxins, prevent further introduction of toxins, balance the gut as you mention doing with probiotics, and healing the gut with proper nutrition. Thanks for bringing up this important topic. Not enough people realize the link between leaky gut and autism, nor the important info on vaccinations.

Chronic Bacterial Infections

Posted by Tommy (North York, On, Canada) on 02/08/2011

I was reading through Metametrix labs and I found that the lab found often a protozoa of unknown taxonomy called PPTU by the lab ( Protozoa present Taxonomy unavailable) in children with autsim. According to Dr Ustman, a world leading doctor of autism, some chronic bacterial infections also are responsible for the disease ( Mycobacteria, L bacteria).

Her protocol is to disturb the bacterial biofilms first using Nattokinase with EDTA then introducing an antimicrobial. The die-off is quite high so she recomanded to use activated charcoal to reduce the toxins.

I believe that autismtic kids were infected by their parents unintentionally because their parents harbor the infection also or they were infected right after being born.

I hope in the future that some research will be pointed toward the cause of Austim ( infection) and not just the symptoms to help this kids who are the victims of pharmaceutical conspiracies.
Tommy.

Has anyone else heard of Donna Gates? She found some interesting conclusions similar to what you were talking about. She is the founder of the Body Ecology diet. I have been following her for about a year now. I tried young coconut kefir and cold pressed flax seed oil on my son for about 2 weeks and saw tremendous results! It's expensive so if you can find the instructions on her site to make the coconut kefir, then I recomend doing that. If anyone else has any information on Autism cures please post!

Angie, my son is 4, has developmental delays including speech. I had great success with Vitamin C. It can chelate the heavy metals including flouride from the body. He went from singing one or two words in a song to singing the whole song (trying anyway) after about 2-3 weeks of having Vitamin C every day... About 3-4 grams per day). His speech also seems improved.

Also cilantro (corriander), garlic, tumeric all chelate heavy metals from the body so all our food has them in it.

I am also trying Evening Primrose Oil & Cod Liver Oil both have had great results in getting EFA into them... good speech results good concentration.

He also has a probiotics and digestive enzymes every day which helps digestion.

We went GFCF as from yesterday to see if that helps him. He has always had digestive issues and I think it is related. I have heard of Donna Gates.... We are looking at her diet and the GAPS diets from Dr. Natasha McBride as well.

He had a blood test recently which showed high folate and high B12 levels .... anyone know what that means? I did read it may mean high level of bacteria in stomach but need to investigate further.

Debbie-

The GAPS diet sounds amazing. I went to Natasha Campbell-McBride's web site and spent a good couple of hours reading and taking notes. We're introducing the diet to our son right now.

Thank you for your comments and for listing the things you've tried. I'll be asking his Dr. If we can do some tests to check vitamin B levels and high peptide levels. A friend told me the same thing so I'm really wanting to do this.

I don't understand the science behind it all. I am searching for more information on why bad bacteria causes such an imbalance. I do understand that foods that are low on the glycemic index are the best since bad carbohydrates convert into sugar and sugar is bad for autism.

I have so much to learn and would love to hear any other ideas or information anyone has to offer.

Looking forward to hearing how your sons progress is going.

Hello Debbie from Melbourne:

I saw where you are using garlic, turmeric and cilantro. I'm using that with my son. He's 9 with aspergers. I'm also adding raw cheese (both cow & goat). I can't buy raw milk in my state because it's illegal, so I'm settling for the cheese. I have notice some changes for the better, which makes me think that he may have some heavy metals in his blood.

I would like to get a blood test for him, but most doctors really don't know what to look for and will order a regular blood test, which won't tell me anything. Does anyone know what I need to tell them to look for in the blood test?

Hi Warvoj, have you read the book Gut & Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha McBride. She cured her son of autism by following a special diet. I have still to read it but it may be worthwhile for you to read it to see what she says about blood tests. She is also a neurologist.

Also I am reading "Excitotoxins, the Taste that Kills" by Dr. Russell Blaylock who says that MSG and Aspartame are responsible for many disorders and learning problems (they cause cell death). There are some foods you can take that are "glutamate blockers" and tumeric is one of them. Also people are in danger if their magnesium levels are low. Everyone should read this book. I first few pages are enough to scare the daylights out of you.

Vitamin C also chelates heavy metals. Also there are some good youtube videos if you google "gaps diet" or Natasha McBride where there are some real cases of kids totally turning around and they have some valuable information.

I am still having problems with my son, his speech is still very delayed. He is a bit better but way below what it should be for a 4 1/2 year old. I am going to take him to the mineral baths to get some minerals into his body and I have just bought some iodine (important for IQ) and magnesium chloride to put in the bath water to get his magnesium levels up.

I have also added iodine and magnesium to my son's protocol as I read that no autism protocol should be without them. Of course do your own research.

Iodine will take heavy metals, flouride & bromide out of the body. It will also kill off bad bacteria/candida/yeast. It is good for IQ if given early enough.

Magnesium is also needed by the brain for learning and many other body systems. Many autistic kids are magnesium deficient. It also is very calming if your child is anxious. "The Magnesium Miracle" is a very good book.

Hi Susan, I put the lugols in my son's milk (1-2 drops) - you can't really taste it. You also need to supplement with vitamin c (taken separately) and selenium (I crush brazil nuts). I also sometimes put it on his skin. His speech is definitely improving.

My son was on a lot of antibiotics when he was young. Antibiotics unless taken with probiotics can cause an outbreak of candida/yeast in the body. Dr. Orian Truss (google him) found that his candida therapy helped many diseases including autism.

He was also given Prednisone a lot for croup like symptoms. I have since discovered that Prednisone drastically depletes the body of magnesium and also ventolin does the same. So a deficiency of magnesium was treated with something that would deplete more magnesium in the body.

Read Dr. Brownstein's book on iodine.. It is worth reading. Your whole family should be on both iodine and magnesium.

Here is an excellent article on autism and magnesium. I give my son magnesium chloride baths as well as epsom salt baths regularly. This is called transdermal magnesium (through the skin) and is better absorbed than in supplement form. I have also just ordered magnesium citrate in powder form as well to give him (and myself). That type of magnesium was recommended in a book I was reading on magnesium.

My son definitely had lots of antibiotics in his first year (being a 26 week prem) and other medications which would have caused the gut problems.

http://lampoflife1.blogspot.com/2010/09/autism-and-magnesium.html

A good website on transdermal magnesium is magnesiumforlife.com

Also a good way to get magnesium into you transdermally is to swim in the ocean. If you live near the ocean swim/paddle in the water at least 30 minutes each time.

Any one who has a child or adult with autism or anger or depression should have them treated at a oxygen healing place where they do hyperbaric treatment. They must bring them down to at least 40ft level. It is an amazing thing. The results after the first hour to hour and a half. I have had so many results in my family that I do not have time to list them all. My son had a lot of anger and dark thoughts and other symptoms. It dramatically changed in 1 visit. I can't explain the calmness he showed after. Same with my stepdaughters son. Who always cried a lot and threw fits and was angry every morning. She was loosing her mind because he constantly said I hate you. He went into a deep level treatment and he became a better kid. He isn't perfect but no longer says I hate you. Much easier to handle. I have many more stories like my brother n law having a level 4 prostate cancer. it wasn't responding to normal chemo. He was scheduled for surgery and We talked him into going into the oxygen treatment. He went 3 times then went to surgery 3 days later. The doctors were shocked that the pear size tumor was crumbling and not alive. They removed it and he is cancer free.

I started taking this for myself as a natural way to heal my gut issues, my hair and nails love it, I have to cut my hair every couple months as opposed to the previous annual haircut because of slow growth...

The greatest outcome, however, was giving it to my family and finding my child who has autism start to communicate more easily overnight and his focus was clearer when we would take it, it has been a couple years now that we have taken it as a family everyday and he is highly functioning now, a happy child.

I do credit DE with helping his body heal (we also included good fats, healthy foods and lots of fun activities in his journey of health also).

Hello Tintin, thanks for your post on DE.

My question is, how old was your child when he first started taking the DE and how much did you give him? Are you able to put the DE in juice so that a child could better drink it?

Thanks so much,

Con

Thank you for your post.

With regards to autism, a link between gut bacteria and improvement in autistic symptoms has been established.

Homemade milk kefir is an excellent source of many strains of good gut bacteria, some of which have been proven to improve autistic symptoms. The commercially available store bought kefir contains only a few strains of bacteria, while the homemade version from real kefir strains contains 26 or more strains. It is also much cheaper than buying probiotics in pill form. The kefir digests much of the lactose in milk, so it should be tolerated in smaller amounts even by those with lactose intolerance.

Thank you! I have used kefir and separately add L.Reuteri but I haven't been consistent with this lately, when I see improvements I tend to slacken, I will make it part of our daily nutrition now. I really appreciate this site, so much real and helpful information.

Vitamin C (abscorbate acid) and iodine (lugols) are excellent to remove heavy metals from the body. Iodine will also remove flouride and murcury.

Those of you mentioning detoxing heavy metals are on the right track. Chelating metals is very important to do, but many of the supplements being promoted for chelation are not safe. Warn anyone against dabbling with heavy metal chelation as, when done improperly causes redistribution of the metals and more problems for your child.

You can safely chelate your child for heavy metals. Encourage you to check into the Andy Cutler protocol (aka AC Protocol), which uses a very low oral dose of DMSA and/or ALA. You can do this protocol on your own, without a doctor and is quite cheap

For more information, you should join the Autism-Mercury Yahoo Group and/or Fight Autism and Win Yahoo Group or Google the book Fight Autism and Win.

Also recommend methyl B12 shots which you can learn about in an ebook Autism the Road to Recovery or watch the author's Youtube videos.

Also suggest any parents check out diatamaceous earth and cleansing for parasites.

Would love any insight on this & DE for kids (Aspergers specifically). I have began taking DE after ordering it to treat what seemed like signs of hook worms in my dog (he was like a new puppy within 10min of ingesting it so I was sold! ) I felt the positive effects that same evening so I decided to make my son (he's 8) a drink with 1/2 a tablespoon instead of 1 TBS I take & I think it was too much BC he was nauseated & eventually threw up but I have read so much about it that seems to be exactly what he needs for the gut issues & allergies. I can't find an ounce of info on giving DE to children period let alone taking it to treat the gut in someone on the spectrum so that in combination with it making him sick has been discouraging but I feel like the research & benefits match up so well it's mind boggling to not have more answers!

Dear Jennifer,

I think adults typically start with 1/2-1 teaspoon of DE, so I wouldn't start with more than 1/8-1/4 teaspoon for a child. And that amount could easily be added to oatmeal or yogurt, I think. I believe it can be constipating so you would want to watch for that.

If DE doesn't agree with your child, there are many things you could like use instead. What are you trying to treat with it?

I work with autistic and aspergers children and adults and have for years. I think diet is the cure. The results are amazing. Dairy, gluten and sugar free. I've seen nothing but good results even with just good effort. These things are not in a 'doctor's' repretoire at all so it's up to you to do it yourself. The only problem I've seen is most autistic children have a parent in the spectrum, and are too set in their ways to do things differently, they would rather accept that there is no treatment than change their diets. I really commend both the parents and adults with AS here that are willing to try do something about it.

I agree, dietary changes have made a difference for my daughter, even at the age of 20, when she began the gluten free/casein free diet. She is also corn free. Parents might think their child is too old to benefit. I wish we had started younger. A gluten free diet is not very hard anymore.

My daughter, Ava, was diagnosed with autism in 2008. Since then, I've implemented the gluten-free casein free diet and it has made a remarkable difference in her life. I know that several autism parents shy away from this lifestyle because it seems like such a tremendous undertaking. The truth, however, is that it's not that hard to do! You learn to read the labels carefully, you learn what your child loves and hates and most of all, you see the difference. Ava and I, together, have made some of the most inedible cake you could imagine but we've also made some amazing chocolate chip cookies using tapioca and sorghum flours.

Regardless of how immediate or immense your child's results may be, I think the most important thing about this diet is the lesson that it teaches these children. I have read and spoken with so many adults on the spectrum who report the difference in how they feel after half a serving of dairy or wheat. This has struck me so profoundly because food choices are SO important for these children. One day, they will be making choices for themselves, so arming them with knowledge of why soda might make them feel funny, for example, is such a powerful gift to me. It's possible that gluten and casein may not be their sensitivities or may not be their ONLY sensitivity, but that opens the door to observe the effects of eggs, soy, etc. My daughter is now 5 and when someone offers her pizza (her FAVORITE!! ) she will politely hold her hand up and say, "No thank you. That is yucky for Ava! " :-)

The other lifesaver in our life has been cod liver oil. Not only does it serve as an excellent booster in her immune system (so many of these kids have such weak immunities), but it keeps her SO focused. I remember the first day I gave cod liver oil to Ava, I cried uncontrollably because she made willing eye contact with me! And I didn't even have to ask for it. It's pretty amazing stuff.

Autism is a complex issue requiring a complex course of treatment. Turpentine is one tiny piece of a huge jigsaw puzzle called autism.

Study the work of Dr. Jeff Bradstreet and you will begin to unlock autism's many secrets.

The very first primary bit of truth about autism is that the child's immune system has been shut down by the presence of NAGALASE .autistic kids invariably show massive levels of nagalase.

What is nagalase? It is an enzyme produced in nature by a fertilized human egg. it provides absolute protection from the immune system.in fact nagalase enzyme is the only substance in the universe which is genetically coded to fit into human DNA and shut down the immune system. it is ONLY found in a fertilized human egg.well at least until science took over. Almost 60 years ago science found a way to duplicate natural occurring nagalase and subvert it into a weapon that literally shuts down immune system function. Since the 60s nagalase has been added to several vaccines and many different viral species including most forms of cancer to make them unstoppable.able to over run your body and suppress your immune system .Dr Jeff Bradstreet and colleagues discovered the truth of this and paid for it with their lives.

Study nagalase and its counterpart GCMAF and you will be off to a good start. Japanese researchers working on the immune system found the on switch which fires up a deactivated weak immune system and supercharges it by a factor of 30 times its resting state. It's a human protein all healthy people make called GCMAF .this is the exact opposite of nagalase and it blocks the effect of nagalase creating health where sickness used to prevail. Dr. Bradstreet used gcmaf on 1100 autistic kids and 85 percent improved while 25 percent fully recovered from autism.

He used diet correction, corrected intestinal dysbiosis, got rid of candida such as the turpentine cure does, clear out biofilm with serrapeptase systemic enzyme then hit the bad microbes with colloidal silver, and chelate out the heavy metals with EDTA and herbs like cilantro, etc then replenish good bacteria with prebiotic such as primal defense ultra or better yet bravo yogurt a blend of 42 species which kill off the harmful species unique to autism. The intestinal microorganisms of healthy kids and autistic kids are different as nite and day.

Researchers gave fecal samples from autistic kids to monkeys and they soon turned autistic. a huge effort must be made to correct and monitor the intestinal tract otherwise no progress can be made. Autistic kids who receive fecal transplants from healthy kids often start doing great. Doctors don't do simple common sense treatments often enough in my opinion.

Again, study Dr. Jeff Bradstreet's work and it will take you a long way on your journey

Have you ever heard of Edgar Casey, the sleeping prophet? He had some very interesting thoughts on seizures and autism. He believed that they were not neurological but intestinal issues he talked about the lactic ducts having lesions and that using castor oil compresses along with diet and spinal adjustments actually could cure the seizures. He died before Autism had surfaced, but mentioned patients with very similar symptoms and this same approach had worked for them also. If anything it is a very interesting read and worth looking into. RONDI

We Cured Our Son's Autism

By Karyn Seroussi

"When the doctors said our son would be severely disabled for life, we setout to prove them wrong.

When the psychologist examining our 18-month-old son told me that she thought Miles had autism, my heart began to pound. I didn't know exactly what the word meant, but I knew it was bad. Wasn't autism some type of mental illness -- perhaps juvenile schizophrenia? Even worse, I vaguely remembered hearing that this disorder was caused by emotional trauma during childhood. In an instant, every illusion of safety in my world seemed to vanish.

Our pediatrician had referred us to the psychologist in August 1995 because Miles didn't seem to understand anything we said. He'd developed perfectly normally until he was 15 months old, but then he stopped saying the words he'd learned -- cow, cat, dance -- and started disappearing into himself. We figured his chronic ear infections were responsible for his silence, but within three months, he was truly in his own world.

Suddenly, our happy little boy hardly seemed to recognize us or his 3-year-old sister. Miles wouldn't make eye contact or even try to communicate by pointing or gesturing. His behavior became increasingly strange: He'd drag his head across the floor, walk on his toes (very common in autistic children), make odd gurgling sounds, and spend long periods of time repeating an action, such as opening and closing doors or filling and emptying a cup of sand in the sandbox. He often screamed inconsolably, refusing to be held or comforted. And he developed chronic diarrhea.

As I later learned, autism -- or autistic spectrum disorder, as doctors now call it -- is not a mental illness. It is a developmental disability thought to be caused by an anomaly in the brain. The National Institutes of Health estimates that as many as 1 in 500 children are affected. But according to several recent studies, the incidence is rapidly rising: In Florida, for example, the number of autistic children has increased nearly 600 percent in the last ten years. Nevertheless, even though it is more common than Down syndrome, autism remains one of the least understood developmental disorders.

We were told that Miles would almost definitely grow up to be severely impaired. He would never be able to make friends, have a meaningful conversation, learn in a regular classroom without special help, or live independently. We could only hope that with behavioral therapy, we might be able to teach him some of the social skills he'd never grasp on his own. I had always thought that the worst thing that could happen to anyone was to lose a child. Now it was happening to me but in a perverse, inexplicable way. Instead of condolences, I got uncomfortable glances, inappropriately cheerful reassurances, and the sense that some of my friends didn't want to return my calls.

After Miles' initial diagnosis, I spent hours in the library, searching for the reason he'd changed so dramatically. Then I came across a book that mentioned an autistic child whose mother believed that his symptoms had been caused by a "cerebral allergy" to milk. I'd never heard of this, but the thought lingered in my mind because Miles drank an inordinate amount of milk -- at least half a gallon a day.

I also remembered that a few months earlier, my mother had read that many kids with chronic ear infections are allergic to milk and wheat. "You should take Miles off those foods and see if his ears clear up," she said. "Milk, cheese, pasta, and Cheerios are the only foods he'll eat," I insisted. "If I took them away, he'd starve."

Then I realized that Miles' ear infections had begun when he was 11 months old, just after we had switched him from soy formula to cow's milk. He'd been on soy formula because my family was prone to allergies, and I'd read that soy might be better for him. I had breast-fed until he was 3 months old, but he didn't tolerate breast milk very well -- possibly because I was drinking lots of milk. There was nothing to lose, so I decided to eliminate all the dairy products from his diet. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous. Miles stopped screaming, he didn't spend as much time repeating actions, and by the end of the first week, he pulled on my hand when he wanted to go downstairs. For the first time in months, he let his sister hold his hands to sing.

Two weeks later, a month after we'd seen the psychologist, my husband and I kept our appointment with a well-known developmental pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis of autism. Dr. Susan Hyman gave Miles a variety of tests and asked a lot of questions. We described the changes in his behavior since he'd stopped eating dairy products. Finally, Dr. Hyman looked at us sadly. "I'm sorry," the specialist said. "Your son is autistic. I admit the milk allergy issue is interesting, but I just don't think it could be responsible for Miles' autism or his recent improvement."

We were terribly disheartened, but as each day passed, Miles continued to get better. A week later, when I pulled him up to sit on my lap, we made eye contact and he smiled. I started to cry -- at last he seemed to know who I was. He had been oblivious to his sister, but now he watched her play and even got angry when she took things away from him. Miles slept more soundly, but his diarrhea persisted. Although he wasn't even 2 yet, we put him in a special-ed nursery school three mornings a week and started an intensive one-on-one behavioral and language program that Dr. Hyman approved of. I'm a natural skeptic and my husband is a research scientist, so we decided to test the hypothesis that milk affected Miles' behavior. We gave him a couple of glasses one morning, and by the end of the day, he was walking on his toes, dragging his forehead across the floor, making strange sounds, and exhibiting the other bizarre behaviors we had almost forgotten. A few weeks later, the behaviors briefly returned, and we found out that Miles had eaten some cheese at nursery school. We became completely convinced that dairy products were somehow related to his autism.

I wanted Dr. Hyman to see how well Miles was doing, so I sent her a video of him playing with his father and sister. She called right away. "I'm simply floored," she told me. "Miles has improved remarkably. Karyn, if I hadn't diagnosed him myself, I wouldn't have believed that he was the same child."

I had to find out whether other kids had had similar experiences. I bought a modem for my computer -- not standard in 1995 -- and discovered an autism support group on the Internet. A bit embarrassed, I asked, "Could my child's autism be related to milk?"

The response was overwhelming. Where had I been? Didn't I know about Karl Reichelt in Norway? Didn't I know about Paul Shattock in England? These researchers had preliminary evidence to validate what parents had been reporting for almost 20 years: Dairy products exacerbated the symptoms of autism.

My husband, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry, got copies of the journal articles that the parents had mentioned on-line and went through them all carefully. As he explained it to me, it was theorized that a subtype of children with autism break down milk protein (casein) into peptides that affect the brain in the same way that hallucinogenic drugs do. A handful of scientists, some of whom were parents of kids with autism, had discovered compounds containing opiates -- a class of substances including opium and heroin -- in the urine of autistic children. The researchers theorized that either these children were missing an enzyme that normally breaks down the peptides into a digestible form, or the peptides were somehow leaking into the bloodstream before they could be digested.

In a burst of excitement, I realized how much sense this made. It explained why Miles developed normally for his first year, when he drank only soy formula. It would also explain why he had later craved milk: Opiates are highly addictive. What's more, the odd behavior of autistic children has often been compared to that of someone hallucinating on LSD. My husband also told me that the other type of protein being broken down into a toxic form was gluten -- found in wheat, oats, rye, and barley, and commonly added to thousands of packaged foods. The theory would have sounded farfetched to my scientific husband if he hadn't seen the dramatic changes in Miles himself and remembered how Miles had self-limited his diet to foods containing wheat and dairy. As far as I was concerned, there was no question that the gluten in his diet would have to go. Busy as I was, I would learn to cook gluten-free meals. People with celiac disease are also gluten-intolerant, and I spent hours on-line gathering information.

Within 48 hours of being gluten-free, 22-month-old Miles had his first solid stool, and his balance and coordination noticeably improved. A month or two later, he started speaking -- "zawaff" for giraffe, for example, and "ayashoo" for elephant. He still didn't call me Mommy, but he had a special smile for me when I picked him up from nursery school. However, Miles' local doctors -- his pediatrician, neurologist, geneticist, and gastroenterologist -- still scoffed at the connection between autism and diet. Even though dietary intervention was a safe, noninvasive approach to treating autism, until large controlled studies could prove that it worked, most of the medical community would have nothing to do with it.

So my husband and I decided to become experts ourselves. We began attending autism conferences and phoning and e-mailing the European researchers. I also organized a support group for other parents of autistic children in my community. Although some parents weren't interested in exploring dietary intervention at first, they often changed their mind after they met Miles.

Not every child with autism responded to the diet, but eventually there were about 50 local families whose children were gluten- and casein-free with exciting results. And judging by the number of people on Internet support lists, there were thousands of children around the world responding well to this diet.

Fortunately, we found a new local pediatrician who was very supportive, and Miles was doing so well that I nearly sprang out of bed each morning to see the changes in him. One day, when Miles was 2 1/2, he held up a toy dinosaur for me to see. "Wook, Mommy, issa Tywannosauwus Wex!" Astonished, I held out my trembling hands. "You called me Mommy!" I said. He smiled and gave me a long hug.

By the time Miles turned 3, all his doctors agreed that his autism had been completely cured. He tested at eight months above his age level in social, language, self-help, and motor skills, and he entered a regular preschool with no special-ed supports. His teacher told me that he was one of the most delightful, verbal, participatory children in the class. Today, at almost 6, Miles is among the most popular children in his first-grade class. He's reading at a fourth-grade level, has good friends, and recently acted out his part in the class play with flair. He is deeply attached to his older sister, and they spend hours engaged in the type of imaginative play that is never seen in kids with autism. My worst fears were never realized. We are terribly lucky.

But I imagined all the other parents who might not be fortunate enough to learn about the diet. So in 1997, I started a newsletter and international support organization called Autism Network for Dietary Intervention (ANDI), along with another parent, Lisa Lewis, author of Special Diets for Special Kids (Future Horizons, 1998). We've gotten hundreds of letters and e-mails from parents worldwide whose kids use the diet successfully. Although it's best to have professional guidance when implementing the diet, sadly, most doctors are still skeptical.

As I continue to study the emerging research, it has become increasingly clear to me that autism is a disorder related to the immune system. Most autistic children I know have several food allergies in addition to milk and wheat, and nearly all the parents in our group have or had at least one immune-related problem: thyroid disease, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or allergies. Autistic children are probably genetically predisposed to immune-system abnormalities, but what triggers the actual disease?

Many of the parents swore that their child's autistic behavior began at 15 months, shortly after the child received the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. When I examined such evidence as photos and videotapes to see exactly when Miles started to lose his language and social skills, I had to admit that it had coincided with his MMR -- after which he had gone to the emergency room with a temperature of 106°F and febrile seizures. Recently, a small study was published by British researcher Andrew Wakefield, M.D., linking the measles portion of the vaccine to damage in the small intestine -- which might help explain the mechanism by which the hallucinogenic peptides leak into the bloodstream. If the MMR vaccine is indeed found to play a role in triggering autism, we must find out whether some children are at higher risk and therefore should not be vaccinated or should be vaccinated at a later age.

Another new development is giving us hope: Researchers at Johnson and Johnson's Ortho Clinical Diagnostics division -- my husband among them -- are now studying the abnormal presence of peptides in the urine of autistic children. My hope is that eventually a routine diagnostic test will be developed to identify children with autism at a young age and that when some types of autism are recognized as a metabolic disorder, the gluten and dairy-free diet will move from the realm of alternative medicine into the mainstream.

The word autism, which once meant so little to me, has changed my life profoundly. It came to my house like a monstrous, uninvited guest but eventually brought its own gifts. I've felt twice blessed -- once by the amazing good fortune of reclaiming my child and again by being able to help other autistic children who had been written off by their doctors and mourned by their parents."

Karyn, and anyone else out there. i wasn't able to breastfeed my daughter for more than 2 months, and frustrated by the ingredients in infant formula (even the organic ones) i discovered that RAW GOAT'S MILK was the closest milk to mother's milk. My then 5 months old daughter stopped spitting up the day i switched her to raw goat's milk! She is 8 mths now and doing wonderful. This is what Dr. Paavo Airola says about pasteurized milk in his book (What every woman should know):

"Homogenization and/or pasteurization breaks up the cream globules into tiny particules which then permits an enzyme in the cream, xanthine oxidase (XO) to enter the blood stream though the intestinal wall instead of being excreted from the body. XO damages the tissues of the arteries and heart, and the body reacts by raising the cholesterol level in the blood. Pasteurization damages the quality of proteins, fat, and minerals in milk and destroys vitamins."

What is your opinion on raw milk for children that are allergic to past. milk? Are allergies to milk strictly due to the pasteurization process? (which all milks are nowadays - raw milk is illegal in the state where i live...but there are still ways to get it) What if children were fed RAW milk exclusively...? Pasteurized milk and RAW milk and technically speaking completely different... i'd be interested to hear anyone's imput/research/finds on the subject.

Karyn Seroussi's Book on Autism

We read your article, but yrs ago read an article from the library about children being on antibiotics, and for long term, destroys the natural flora. Every time we tried the chewable pro-biotics (refrigerated), he improved, so much so...we would forget...and he would quit taking them, and the symptoms always returned, each time getting greater in intensity. Well... after things got progressively worse...we read your article. We knew our son had asthma and was already on goat's milk. He had tried soy, rice milk, etc., but didn't care for them. We decided to take our son off goat milk, as it contains trace amounts of casein, and also took him off gluten in wheat. He is back on chewable pro-biotics (acidophilis) 2x day. His symptoms have improved greatly. After speaking with a person at a health food store out of state, we were told once the body restores itself back to health, our son would be able to get off the gluten and casein free diet. (Perhaps not the casein, because of the asthma). We found a health food store that carries gluten free casein free pizza, muffins, soups, cookies, crackers, pretzels, and has mixes to make cakes, cookies, etc. We are thankful for your post and wanted you to know about the pro-biotic replacement therapy, that is working for us, as we see improvements. We did, even before he was on the gluten and casein free diet. It only makes sense...because the antibiotics destroy the flora...and it will take time to prelace. Our son had no ear infections the first year of his life...then had almost constant infections from year 1-2 of his life. So...he may need to be on probiotics for a year or longer...we don't know...but just know he is feeling better...can study better, stay focused better...so we give the Glory to God. :) May God be with and bless you and yours for your sharing your knowledge over the internet. Blessings, the Lakes.

Hi Karyn, that was an amazing story and one with a happy ending, something we could use more of. I am seeing a girl that has a 4 yr old boy such a sweet little guy and she thinks he is showing signs of Autism. I am trying to read all I can and offer advice and support for her and Felix. I would do anything to be able to help him get well. Where can I get a copy of your book for his mom? Thank you so much. Chris

There have been successful fecal transplants for autism. Autism symptoms reduced nearly 50 percent two years after fecal transplant. Check out youtube videos for do-it-yourself transplants. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190409093725.htm

High Potency Fish Oil w/ Virgin Evening Primrose Oil Has Made My Little Boy "Normal" I have two children aged 3.5yrs and 21 months. My eldest was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder at the start of the year (Jan 2007). Because my eldest son is classed as Autistic, the health professional seem to think that my youngest may have a problem. Okay, my youngest is very hyperactive, used to run into things (like the kitchen table) and not feel any pain and he had a serious biting problem that went waaaayyy beyond teething. After geting sick and tired of hearing "your youngest maybe suspected Autistic/ADD" I decided to see a homeopath and ask (beg) for help. The lady there was wonderful and recommended that I try a mixture of high potency fish oil that also contained virgin evening primrose oil that was recommended for children and adults of all ages. Well, after a week of giving him 5ml a day (mixed with food), our little boy is all cool. calm and collected. He stills runs around but he has stopped running into walls and tables. The biting was gone and he interacts well with his autistic brother. He has also started talking again. And to think, only 2 weeks have passed now and he will only improve. Just wanted to share this with you. Thanks

Hi - I have a 23 yr. old son who has grown up with high functioning autism. I understand that Vit. D and Fish Oil would benefit him. Can anyone tell me the recommended dosage for each? Thank you.

C: Most all nutritional supplements have dosage recommendations, so just follow those guidelines as labeled and you'll be fine. If I may back up a bit, I would suggest a good healthfood store brand Multiviatmin/Mineral with any additionals like green foods, digestive enzymes etc. This will provide a good amount of Vit-D as well as many other nutrients needed by the body. As for supplementing Fish Oil, I get more benefit from eating Salmon, Mackerel, or Sardines regularly and take a supplement of Flax Oil. Coconut Oil is highly recommended for improving brain health and keeping fungal infections suppressed so do consider this also. Back to Vit-D, when the weather is suitable he can Sunbath as well as Grounding or Earthing where one lays upon the soft grass on a warm day to help pull out bad energy & stress.
