I just started having cracks in the corner of my mouth 6 months ago. First time was in February and just thought it was the cold weather and dry because of having the heat on etc. Next time was in July, suffered for a week and then it got better, came right back, cleared up when I started using OTC Hydrocortisone cream. It came back again a week later and I was just ready to go see a dermatologist. I thought about what was I doing differently and remembered that I bought new toothpaste, A&H Peroxicare. I looked it up on line and a LOT of people were having trouble with this toothpaste and mouth cracks, dry lips, dry mouth, tongue irritation. Stopped using it right away and within 24 hours the difference is almost 100% healed. I used the hydrocortisone cream for about 12 more hours since I was having an allergic reaction. 24 hours later, I don't even need that now. I never would have dreamed that I would ever be allergic to toothpaste but there is some ingredient in it that is causing a lot of irritation to a lot of people. I think back in February, I was using the same toothpaste but I couldn't swear to it. Good Luck finding your cure, the mouth cracks are painful.

Honey, Athlete's Foot Cream

I got angular cheilitis from being exposed to harsh cold conditions without proper lip moisturizer/sunscreen and face protection. My lips puffed up, the cracks at the edges of my lips were raw and painful, the skin around my mouth broke out and then got crusty and flaky, I had pus buildup, and the skin under my lips broke.

What didn't work for me:

Garlic and honey paste, teabags, cucumber, Vaseline, aquaphor

What ended up working:

I switched in between applying local raw honey to the cracks, rinsed it off after an hour, then applied athletes foot cream (from CVS), throughout the day. Burt's beeswax chapstick (original), helped with the chapped lips, and vitamin e oil helped with the flaky skin. I also stopped using fluoride gel toothpaste when brushing my teeth and used just basic white fluoride toothpaste, as it doesn't sting the cuts at all.

it's been under a week since I've been using this regimen and I'm almost healed.

Milk of Magnesia

I wanted to add my comments as I too have tried many of the normal suggestions with little result for angular chelitis. I actually stumbled on Milk of Magnesia by accident. I tried it one day when I noticed the cracks returning-yet-again.

Milk of Magnesia works!! Any time I feel that dry/tingly feeling like the corner of my mouth is about to crack again- I do the following and have had great results nipping it in the bud before it actually becomes red or inflamed.

1. Wash area with dish soap and let air dry.

2. I take a dab of Milk of Magnesia (plain only) and well saturate the crack/corner of mouth. Let air dry.

**I think the main way this works is that it gets deep into the cracks and dries- keeping that area dry and unable to sustain yeast or bacteria.

3. After about a half hour I rinse it off and put a thin coat of plain aloe gel. Let dry.

I have found that doing this before bed is a huge help. Normally when I wake up, it is gone or in the process of healing. I like to keep the aloe handy and reapply before eating (this seems to help it from tearing when taking big bites or chewing).

I hope that this helps someone! I was really surprised how well Milk of Magnesia worked for this. On a side note- MoM can also be used as a deodorant. It works really well for stinky armpit sweat. Apply after shower- let dry completely (I stand in front of a fan :) and off you go. No pit stains, no smell and no residue on your shirts.

I hope this helps someone who is suffering with angular chelitis/thrush.

Around 3 months ago I noticed little horizontal cracks at the corners of my mouth. Soon very dry lips appeared, and I never have dry lips. I started putting vasaline on my lips which seemed to help but it never completly went away. I found this website and others which advised using an anti-fungal cream, which I did. It worked and I thought I had it beat, but a month later it was back and worse.

Not only did I now have the cracks and the dry lips, the inside of my mouth became very sore and it was unbearable to eat or open my mouth very wide. I used more vasaline and since I suspected it was yeast related I started rinsing my mouth with 1 part organic apple cider vinager and one part water. It was pretty painful at first, but after a week it seemed to go away, or so I thought.

Two weeks later, I noticed my lips feeling different and the inside of my bottom lip becoming very sensitive and sure enough the next day the cracks were back!

I came back to this sight and read about people using Milk of Magnesia to combat yeast and if its in the mouth, its called thrush. I thought only babies could get that and I'm a mother of three breastfed babies who never got it, so why me and why now at 40 yrs old am I having to deal with thrush!

Well, last Friday I tried it and it worked like nothing else has. 2 days after my first use, my mouth looked completely normal. I'm on day 5 and its like nothing ever hapend. No cracks, no sores, no dry lips!!!!

Here is what I did:

Step 1- Buy plain, unflavored milk of magnesia. Generic works, peppermint flavored and cherry do not.

Step 2- I shook it up well and, swished it around in my mouth, for about a minute. No, it does not taste good and do not swallow, spit it out but do not rinse. When you spit it out you will notice white stuff immediately coming out of your mouth. I do believe that it is dead yeast.

Step 3- Apply a nice layer on, around your lips, and inside lips. It is runny, so it will be a thin layer. Let it dry like a mask with your mouth slightly open. Use cotton balls to soak up extra saliva if you dont want to swallow.

Step 4 - Let it dry completely. Yes, you will look like a clown but the results are worth it.

Step 5 - Rinse off with plain water. And you can rinse your mouth out to.

Step 6 - After 15-20 min, brush your teeth with baking soda and rinse with 1part Apple Cider Vinegar and 1 part water. Be sure and brush your tongue and gently brush the inside of your mouth to help exfoliate the dead skin.

Step 7 - Apply vasaline to keep lips and surrounding area as moist as possible.

You will notice the skin on your lips and around your mouth, that has been infected with the yeast, will dry to a thin scab. Please do not pick at it. It will come off, but you can irritate and tear your healthy, delicate lip skin if you try to pull it off too soon. Not fun, I know. The skin will start to come off on the second or third day.

I did this 4 times on the 1st day (morning, mid-morning, afternoon and before bed). 3 times a day for two days. 2 times a day for 2 days and now just once a day.

Good Luck!

Castor Oil and Baking Soda

I have suffered with angular cheilitis for many years. I have tried many things including, antibacterial cream, cortisone cream, fungal cream, tea tree oil, oregano oil, hydrogen peroxide and more. I had some success with tea tree at keeping the sores from getting larger but nothing has helped to diminish them until now. My angular cheilitis was a pretty severe case with a raise "sore" at the corner of my lips that was at least the size of a dime, and then raised up somewhere between 5-7 millimeters. The condition has really hurt my self esteem. Thankfully I finally found a way to rid myself of angular cheilitis. I made a paste of castor oil and baking soda and applied it over night. After just one application my angular cheilitis was reduced by half, several more and it now almost completely gone! This remedy has been easy, cheap, and it's the only thing I have ever found to be effective. Just mix some castor oil and baking soda until it makes a thick heavy paste and leave on over night. It will burn some but it really really really helps!

I have been dealing with cracked lips for about two months and have been seaching for a way to treat them to no avail until I tried a generic brand of CVS CLOTRIMAZOLE 1% (this is a cream that is used to treat athlete's foot.) After using it for only two days, my lips are no longer cracked and finally feel normal.

I swear by Apple Cider Vinegar and baking soda do take care of alot of aliments, but I found NOT for this, maybe too strong? irritated, made it worse for the cracked corners of mouth ...what worked for me was Cortozone 10 in the OINTMENT not the cream...90% better next day 100% day 3.

I believe mine was caused by old lipstick. Suffered for 2 weeks plus, complained to my friend about it, who said try the ointment not the cream... worked.

I had a moderate sized sore/crack on one corner of my mouth (Angular Chelitis). I wasn't familiar with Angular Chelitis, so I initially used my two "go-to" remedies - Raw Honey and Tumeric - on the sore with little to no result. After seeing the yogurt recommendation on EarthClinic, I gave it a try. I covered the sore in yogurt, and within minutes I felt it was working. Sure enough, within about 4 or 5 hours the cracked sore was gone.

There was still some residual tumeric on the sore when I applied the yogurt; not sure if that helped speed up the healing process. But generally speaking, I was both suprised and thrilled with the results/effectiveness of applying yogurt to Angular Chelitis. I would strongly recommend trying this remedy first if you come down with a bout of AC.

Tea Tree Oil, Vitamin E

I found a really good remedy for angular cheilitis on another website. In a small jar or tupperware tub, something with a sealable lid: Mix 2 tablespoons tea tree oil, 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil and and mix with 1 and a half tablespoons vaseline. (I didn't have any vitamin E oil to hand so I took 4-5 vitamin E capsules and squeezed the oil out of them) Mix it up really well to combine the oils with vaseline. Gently rub into the cracks regularly (about 4-5 times a day). Try not to get it actually inside your mouth as the tea tree tastes pretty nasty and tends to make everything else you eat and drink taste nasty too! Within 10 mins of first using this the stinging had gone from the cracks at the corners of my mouth. By the next day the cracks seemed to be "healing" and by the third day the cracks were gone and so was the pain. Miracle! Keep this ointment in the fridge for use when needed. The above recipe makes quite a bit and you only need to use a small smear at a time. Also taking a multivitamin with vitamin Bs in can help prevent recurrence of the problem.

For years I would get Angular Chelitis, on one or both sides of my mouth, about every 6-8 weeks, which would last for about 2 weeks. In other words, I had it 1/3 to 1/4 of the time--it was a nightmare. About 6 months ago, I started taking MSM, and have not had it since. It is nice and cheap (I paid about $20 for 2.2 pounds), and completely cured my Angular Cheilitis. Personally, I take 2-3 teaspoons per day.

I have had angular chelitis problem for years and I was always giving a prescription called dental paste. I decided to try plain yogurt with the acidophilus and took a q tip and applied to the corners of my mouth in a clump before bedtime and when I awoke it was completely cleared up :)
